My girlfriend brought me here, and I must say... it was awfully tasty. Yes, it's in Times Square, and yes there are tourists EVERYWHERE, but go to opentable.com, make your reservation, then show up and chow down on some surprisingly decent barbecue. We split an order of hushpuppies (good Lord that's a big basket of fried bread), she had a chicken salad w/barbecue sauce, and I had myself some brisket, Memphis style pork ribs, mac'n'cheese, and some slaw. I liked all three of Virgil's sauces, but would've loved another, slightly more vinegary option...
At the end of the meal though I was stuffed beyond belief, and it really was all quite good. I'm giving this four stars cuz I'm doubting that you're gonna find much better on the isle of Manhattan. If this were St. Louis, Memphis or Texas, I might take drop a star.

Yummy. My boyfriend and I walked into Virgil's for a late night dinner after seeing a broadway show. I was a little skeptical but overall the food was really good. Our server was very nice and laid-back--he seemed like a real southerner. I ordered the greens and the pecan rice, which are both cooked with meat (yum) and settled for whatever rib scraps came my way from my bf's plate. He liked the ribs- I thought them okay, a little dry and not tender enough. BUT, let me tell you about the greens---they are downright HEAVENLY....you've got to try it for yourself. The wild, pecan rice is a very close second, with pecans and chunks of pork. Worth a stop if you're in the mood for bbq and in Time Square/Theatre District.

this was a last minute choice for a birthday treat dinner for a friend, with 2 friends plus myself. of course, it's tough to get into the place, because of its location that's so close to the heart of times square. the waiter was just super attentive, so close to being annoying actually. i enjoyed the bbq meal i had which had everything including pork, beef, chicken, that i shared with my friend. i'm going back one of these days!
Not good. Ribs were dry and caked with a gnarly rub. What kind of BBQ place cooks all of the moisture out of their ribs and then makes you add BBQ sauce because the meat is DRY?!
French fries were bland. BLAND!
BBQ FAIL!

I was actually surprised when I read all the not-so good reviews for Virgil's. I love it there. I would go for their honey- butter and biscuits alone. And the greens are to die for. I took my daughter and my son the other day for lunch and I was thrilled with the service we got. The staff was so nice, and even was courteous when my son had to have corn dogs changed for regular hot dogs after he realized he didn't like them.
We shared the train wreck fries- sans jalapenos, and we all loved them. I had the pulled chicken sand which- which was FANTASTIC! My daughter had the friend shrimp PO boy- and of course I tried it and loved it too.
Fro dessert we tried the homemade devil dogs. Very sweet- and only one bite was enough for me!
I will be back here soon.

Well let's first start with, we are in Time's Square. Everything is overpriced. Especially parking the car if you are from out of town.
Virgil's is okay. The food is very good. Not great! Service is a little weak. I've had better BBQ but I also must say we are in NY not some small BBQ town down south. I wonder if Virgil's were south of the Mason Dixon would it be rated higher. My guess would be yes. Sometimes we all have high expectations for authentic food that is prepared by non-authentic cooks. But overall, I had a good experience and I had great company. I would go back in a NY minute.

VERY good BBQ in NYC.
The only drawback to Virgil's is the annoying tourists, but once you sit down and enjoy yourself, the food is great.
The St. Louis ribs are great, the BBQ Chicken is great, I loved their Mac & Cheese and baked beans too.

Great for tourists and those not familiar with great BBQ.
I've been here a couple times, each time hoping the food might be a little better. I absolutely love the hush puppies, authentic or not they are delicious and come with a side of maple butter. The appetizer is the perfect size to share with 4-6 people so if you're only with one other person don't bother ordering a meal unless you want to take most of them home with you.
There place mats talk about their search for the best BBQ in the nation and point out great places in the south that they've visited and they talk about the wood they use to smoke with. All this talk you psych yourself into thinking this is the real deal but it just kind of falls short of a good BBQ place.
The portions are quite small for a BBQ joint, the meat (pulled pork) is very fatty, the brisket is fairly dry, and there really isn't anything fantastic about Virgil's food.

One of the better bbq places in nyc. Location sucks, but the memphis style ribs/collard greens/coleslaw are awesome. Love the loaded fries, I forget what they're called, but they were amazing.
Oh, come on, how do you mess up pork ribs and call yourself a bbq place??? At the very least, you marinade and cook it. Not burn it! Not dry it to the point that it's jerky!
The mac and cheese was gross. It was cooked noodles with a flavourless, watered down cheese mixture... that's the only way I could describe it.
My friend's corn dog was soggy. WTF? How do corn dogs get soggy after living in a deep fryer?
This place is an overpriced waste of space!

Being the Southern Belle that I am, I didn't expect much of Virgil's--I mean, really good BBQ in NYC? C'mon. Not so much.
Due to my low expectations, Virgil's didn't disappoint. It may have actually succeeded...
We started with the BBQ Nachos, which is your standard nachos made with BBQ pulled pork, the other standard ingredients and topped off with jalapeno peppers. These were delicious. Absolutely delicious.
Next was the beef brisket sandwich...which was a beef brisket sandwich. I think I'll stick with my standard chicken sandwich next time.
Either way, it's an okay experience. Sucks that it's in Times Square because that means a) I had to start karate chopping tourists who were literally Sunday strolling and b) prices were a little high for my taste.
Overall, it was a decent experience. I'll probably go back for the nachos!

Virgil's Texas BBQ Chili
This is a really big bowl of chili, and I just got their pint sized version. Yikes! There are huge chunks of meat to this chili. But, what I like more than the meat chunks is the fact that it's not all lean/dry chunks of beef.
The overall flavor of the chili is over-the-top, but not overbearing (read some of my other chili reviews for references). The flavor is a bit less than perfect for my eastern american-asian palate. Basically, I taste more of the spices than I taste of the main ingredients. I'd gladly lose my religion if the spices were blended perfectly, they were not done so. If this is what's to be expected of classical American Barbeque fare (which I do not believe to be true), then I'm not missing much.
ps: even their corn muffing/bread came out overtly salty.
Virgil's BBQ Wings
Hmm.., bbq wings, they can be soo good when it's done the way I like it. The rub that was used on their bbq wings is too intense, or it might have been rubbed in too aggressively, or it might have been left on there too long. I could barely finish these wings, and half way through the dish I was dying to cleanse my palate with a beverage.
The wings also lack a desirable amount of juiciness. Some parts were downright dry.
Edit 6/8/08 (changed rating from 2 stars to 4 stars, read on for reasons)
Virgil's Texas Beef Brisket
"This is goooood brisket, yo" was my immediate response when my waiter asked about my meal (Alright, I didn't really say "yo" out loud, but I wanted to ;)
Verdict: this is very good bbq brisket. Ample marbling effect coupled with decent smoke flavor and exquisitely-monitored cooking times = great brisket. It's good bbq brisket that I can enjoy without gravy or bbq sauce. The slices of brisket handle themselves well, no dryness or overcooking here.
Virgil's Ribs
Much like their brisket, the ribs are also very goood. It's a rack of juicy, smoky goodness. Read on for details; proceed to Virgil's otherwise.
Any time ribs are on my dinner menu, I check my humility at the door. Part of the ribs-feasting experience entails, ripping, chomping, and slopping into the carefully prepared ribs. And, these ribs were definitely carefully prepared. The ribs are moist and juicy on the inside, slightly crispy & smoky in the middle, and they're topped off with a dash of extra rub spices on the outside. I enjoyed them thoroughly from the first rib to the last.
I also tried some of their coleslaw. The slaw is different than your typical delicatessen variety. I could barely tell if there's any mayo in this slaw. The overall flavor came across as somewhat bland. It's spicy coleslaw, which I didn't expect, however by my third spoonful I came to appreciate & welcome the spiciness in the slaw.

FIrst, let me say that based solely on the food, I would give this place five stars. It's that good. Everything, bbq, southern food, appetizers, are excellent. Even the sides are excellent, the baked beans, the vegatables, mac and cheese, etc.
What kills me is the horrible service, the incompetent/surly staff, and the prices which are ridiculous even for Times Square. Once I didn't mind because I knew the portions were big, but no more. Virgil's is cutting corners by both raising the price and cutting the portion size. It's pointless to make a reservation, you will still wait forever. The staff also must assume that only tourists visit--they do nothing to make you want to come back if you live here like I used to. I guess this is a problem with most places in Times Square. Since the vast majority of patrons are tourists, there's no point in offering service that will make you to return. Avoid Times Square if you go to NYC. You won't be mugged, but you will be treated badly anywhere you eat or visit.

Like some other reviewers here, I need to knock Virgil's down a few pegs based on service, or their lack thereof. The food is great but this last time I was having a late lunch at Virgil's with my cousin and the service was pretty terrible. Our server left his shift about halfway through. I'm not sure how common this is, but in all my life eating out at restaurants I've never had a server end his/her shift in the middle of my meal. My ex-waitress cousin says it's pretty rare. Normally I wouldn't care, but the waiter took our BBQ sauces to refill halfway through our meal and we didn't get them back till our plates were cleared. That's pretty unacceptable in my book. A BBQ place shouldn't leave a table without sauce! So even though the pulled pork was great, it could've used a little more sauce.
Best Beef Brisket sandwich I've ever tasted. And I mean tasted because I only got A taste of my boyfriend's sandwich. It was so good I dont even remember what I ate!
BBQ was decent and liked that they seemed to have a good variety of items on their menu. A little too crowded and hectic, but that's what you get in Times Square.
Not the best BBQ I've had, but not a bad option if you're looking for a BBQ fix.

I gotta say, I'm surprised this place has so many bad reviews.. although if you read them half of them say that the food is great but the service sucks.. okay, I can see it, but honestly I've been here a lot and pretty much always have the exact same experience here: My boyfriend and I have kind of a ritual, we're both from GA so we appreciate good BBQ and we are willing to brave droves of *ridiculous* tourists that frequent this place and the surrounding area of Times Square, which, honestly, for us is a pretty big deal. We always order the exact same thing which is Freakin DELICIOUS every time: combo platter with pork ribs and pulled pork, greens and baked beans and then we have to have our salads with loads of ranch dressing. Like I said it's consistently awesome every single time. But, okay, maybe the service isn't amazing, but I certainly have never had a notably bad experience with it, I don't come here to be fawned over and pampered, that's for sure. But if you're interested in really great BBQ outside of the south, this is the place to go!

As a born and bred North Carolina girl, bbq is one of my passions. I truly didn't care for Virgil's bbq. It's alright - but it's just alright. Not anything to rave about, and I wouldn't bring my NC family here for food to remind them of home.
However - the collards greens and the hushpuppies with honey butter --- I felt like I was at home!!! The collards greens are just right - a little salty, with a little kick.
Whenever I'm craving greens this is the place I go to.

I'm still dreaming about this place. Front ribs where phenomenal. But the real prize in this BBQ joint is their brisket sandwiches. THE BEST I'VE EVER HAD. The mac n cheese ain't too shabby either. Its baked and reminded me of this one spot I went to in Georgia. That's right folks, southern mac n cheese in the middle of NY!!
Not to pricey, go in the middle of the afternoon when its not too packed. If you go during dinner time, expect an hour or longer wait.

Being from the South and all, I must admit I do enjoy some really good BBQ. My girlfriend and I were kind of surprised when we stumbled across Virgil's on an extremely rainy and nasty winter day in NYC. I didn't expect the pulled pork sandwich to be so tasty and the sauce on the table that accompanied the meals was spectacular.
The two side dishes aren't huge but the size of the sandwich was perfect. I know its Times Square and its NYC and all that so I'll excuse the $10.95 price tag (I'm not sure if I've ever really paid over 7 dollars for BBQ). They also had sweet tea which was quite a find in the North. Once again, I'm not sure if I've ever paid $2.95 for a sweet tea! The restaurant has typical BBQ house decor - flying pig posters and things of that sort and the place mats actually recommend other BBQ restaurants around the U.S.
As I said, it was raining terribly hard the day we went into Virgil's and the waitress eventually realized we were seeking refuge and cut us off by no longer offering refills. A bit disappointing because she threw us back out into the rain, but understandable as we all need to make 'dat money.'

It's a little pricey but the portions are HUGE. Times Square is a real hit or miss in my opinion when it comes to restaurants, but Virgil's is one of the better ones. I'm not a bbq expert, but I think this place does a pretty good job. The pulled pork was really great and the cornbread was superb. Great touristy spot to visit as it is close to all of the great things Times Square has to offer.
Not the best BBQ place in town, but it is not the worst either. It is more on the lines of a Brother Jimmy's than a Dinosaur (or insert your favorite place here). It is "in" Times Square so you can expect to see lots of tourists, and menu pricing to reflect that. It is nice if you work in the area and want to come with a group to hoot and holler, if you don't then do not bother to make this a destination.
They do have hush puppies, and I am a sucker for them...
The restrooms are private stall way in the back. They keep with the decor of the restaurant, and are generally clean and stocked. 4 Flushes.
The food is really good. I wish they had baby back ribs in addition to their front ribs but they really made those front ribs count. Probably the best front ribs I've ever had. My only complaints are that it's a tad pricey for BBQ and I HATE the neighborhood.
Yummy bbq pulled chicken and delicious corn bread. Nice servers and a good, casual ambiance. I'm far from an expert on barbecue, but I have enjoyed this place on two visits to Manhattan, and it is an amazing value for being right off of the biggest tourist neighborhood in all the world.

The closest thing to Real BBQ in the northeast. AMAZING!
Whether you go for the ribs, the pulled pork, or the split chicago style hot dogs, you will be completely satisfied. Make sure you get some biscuits either with the killer maple butter, or the decadent sausage gravy.
They also have great lemonade, a monsterous beer list, and the largest collection of hot sauces i've ever seen.
Prepare to wait, but its worth it.

As I am not a mean person I ordered Grilled Catfish, didn't taste anything and was kind of overgrilled and dried, not so exciting.
Entrees are served with two sides, I had mashed potatoe and bbq beans, both great.
The service is very very slow, food ok, atmosphere kind of dark.

Train wreck fries and bbq wings are good but on the salty side. Ribs and pulled pork are decent. Always packed for dinner. There's a bar area while you wait.
Must get: bbq wings
Okay Virgil, let's talk. The office rats forced your menu under my nose like smelling salts around 11:30 this morning and told me to pick and pick fast or there would be repercussions. I was producing a Web site, coding a newsletter and writing emails all at once and so I let my finger do the choosing. I love this finger now. And I love you, Virgil. Not in a gay way though.
But is it wrong to love tender, juicy brisket on buttermilk toast, slathered in sharp cheddar and onions? What's that? It is? Well then I think you know my response: I don't wanna be right.
I've never been to Virgil's and don't want to go. If you have the misfortune of working in the Times Square area you know the daily hell of fat tourists, terrible culinary variety and that naked cowboy (seriously: why isn't this guy dead of exposure yet?). But Virgil's is a beacon of hope for lovers of BBQ. Oh man, I can still taste that smoky flavor on the back of my tongue.
So, here's my advice (and don't make that face--you wouldn't be here if you didn't want it) order from Virgil's, clear out the conference room and get stupid on some brisket (the pulled pork is a little bit of manna on a bun), potato salad, fried chicken and BBQ sauce. You'll be so punch drunk that you might admit to going to your sister's sweet sixteen in assless chaps.
Not that I would ever do ... you get the point.

mad touristico but tasty.
The onion rings had weird kind of burnt oil flavor. I think they just needed to change the oil in the fryer.
I had the grilled catfish with a mac and cheese side and grilled veggies side. The fish was well cooked and well seasoned but I kind of wanted some sauce.
The drinks were really yum. Good beers on tap, good southern moon juice type drunks (ie, you will get wasted on more than 1)
They had live music that was a tad too loud and the sets were really short, so by the time my ears adjusted to the music and I was getting into it, they'd stop playing.
All of this being said, if you're visiting NYC from out of town and you're wanting to visit time's square, I'd pick virgils over any of the chain places in TS.

I enjoyed this restaurant for what it's worth... I had the BBQ lamb and it was pretty tasty. The cornbread that came with it was... not really good, but not really bad either. It had chunks of corn in it which I'm not used to. I didn't really like the seating; my friend and I were seated at a table in the middle of the floor. Perhaps others wouldn't find anything wrong with it, it's just that I'm a "booth on the wall" kind of girl. Anyway, I would give this place 3.5 stars because I wasn't totally satisfied or filled.
The WORST place I have ever eaten in my entire life. No joke.
I tried to give them a zero star... but they won't let you.
I have never been treated so poorly- I can not even put how much i loathe this restaurant into words...
I was with a larger party (maybe 6 people), our waiter came about 20 minutes after we sat down- took 1/2 of our orders, had no advice, opinion, or recommendations about anything on the menu- and once our waiter found out that we wanted water with our meals, not soda, he straight up stopped serving us. Yep- just decided to never come back. Once someone from our party got up and found a different server (with an attitude the size of Texas) he finally took the rest of our order... but was not happy about it. How dare we walk into a restaurant and expect to be waited on...
An hour later 2 people were served, about 30 minutes after that the rest got their meals- most were the wrong order- and all were cold.
After being assaulted by the Manager for suggesting that the bill he presented us was ridiculous... we left.
I am not one of those crazy people who go out to restaurants and complain so they will get things for free, or a discount. I rarely complain about service. But I do demand respect when I am paying for some type of service. And I do believe that the customer is usually right... nope... never right at Virgil's

Went with a group of six very hungry 20-something BBQ fans. We started with the BBQ nachos (quite possibly the best invention since sliced bread) and the Trainwreck fries (quite yummy/fattening as well).
Between us, the entrees consisted of a shrimp po'boy, a bbq roasted chicken, ribs & shrimp platter, 2 orders of pulled pork, and my huge & flaky order of fried buttery catfish.
Pro:
~Strong drinks. Though I rarely visit BBQ joints for the drinks (aside from Dallas BBQ's, because the margaritas are nothing more than 20 oz of alcoholic kool-aid) Virgil's drinks are tasty and STRONG. The 'Fall off the back porch' ice tea will make you do exactly that. And at $9 a glass, it might possibly be the best valued cocktail in all of New York.
~Cheese Grits. Period.
~Reservations. In the crush of the pre/post-show rush for sustenance, these things will save your life. We arrived a 1/2 hour earlier than expected, and they still sat us within 5 minutes. Yet upon leaving, the entrance was a madhouse of people waiting (up to 45 minutes, I overheard) for a table. The bar itself is cramped and small, so unless you're watching 'the game' and eating maple-butter biscuits, don't think about standing over there.
~Casual atmosphere. Once again, we were a party of six 20-something year olds. Yeah, we all have stuffy 9-5's that require us to dress 'business casual,' but I'll be damned if I'm wearing slacks on *my* time. Showing up in jeans was perfect for the noisy barnyard ruckus.
~Hand towels for napkins, and hot towels after eating. Ignore the fact that all of the men in your party will feel obliged to place the hot towel on their face as if getting a shave, but appreciate Virgil's understanding that BBQ sauce + paper napkins = bad math. (Did ya hear that, Dallas BBQ's?)
Cons:
~Mac-N-Cheese. I used to go here as a kid, and even then I had a hatred of Kraft mac-n-cheese. Which is why Virgil's *was* so appealing; theirs was delicious and tasted home-baked. WTF happened? The side of MNC that I ordered tasted like gluey Kraft; soupy, wet, straight outta the box...not cool.
~Prices. One member of our party put it best; "For a shared app, one cocktail, and an entree of ribs and shrimp with two sides, I'd say that this meal was probably worth $30, not the $50 per person that it came to" ...and she's right.
~Kids. Ignoring my love/hate relationship with them, personally, I wouldn't bring 10 (yeah, we counted) rug-rats under the age of 13 to a loud BBQ joint in Times Square, especially on a Saturday, when you've got drunken 20-something year olds to your left, and drunken football watching guys on the right. I'm just saying Chuck E. Cheese woulda probably been more their 'scene'.
In conclusion: though I love the joint, unless the prices fall and the mac-n-cheese gets better, I'll regulate this place for strictly cocktails and small bites (like BBQ nachos and trainwreck fries.)

I'm a sucker for tender, saucy, fall-off-the-bone ribs. Virgil's ribs aren't like that but they're still pretty tasty. Their Memphis style dry-rubbed ribs have a great smoky flavor but I still used plenty of their spicy BBQ sauce to wash them down. They also had a special that night on a full rack of baby back ribs. They weren't as good as the Memphis style ribs nor did they rank very memorable in my book. They lacked tenderness and the apricot BBQ sauce was a bit on the tart side. The big winner here are the sides. The collard greens, BBQ beans, pickled beets and mac n cheese were all great. Overall, it's decent BBQ given the Times Square location.

I've been going to Virgil's since it opened. In the last year or so this place has went downhill. It use to be a "can't miss". Now it's crap shoot every time I order. With so many good BBQ restaurants opening up in NYC, Virgil's is quickly falling to the bottom of the list. It's a shame that a place that was once so good, is losing it's luster at a rather fast pace.
This review originally posted at http://3oclockam.blogs...
"That's the best barbecue in the city," the cabbie claims as we roll past Virgil's through the slow midtown traffic on the way to my hotel.
It's a bold claim, and I wonder to myself how good can the best barbecue in New York City be?
It rains again that evening, and since I don't want to walk very far in the rain, I decide to put the cabbie's claim to the test. I cross 44th Street and enter Virgil's domain.
It's like stepping 1,200 miles back to Westport in Kansas City. The rustic decor definitely elicits the barbecue mood. I request a table for one. The place is packed, as I imagine most restaurants in Manhattan would be on a Friday night, raining or not.
I'm seated and order a Brooklyn Ale and the beef short rib. While I'm waiting for the food to arrive, I browse the placemats that tell a short story about Virgil's quest for great barbecue. It shows a map of the eastern half of the United States (they don't eat barbecue out west), along with markers for the best BBQ by region.
Happily, I see the KC metro with the highest concentration of notes:
* Kansas City, Mo.: Haywards Pit Bar-B-Que, made "burnt ends" into an art form.
* Kansas City Masterpiece, great example of KC style brisket.
* Arthur Bryants, a Kansas City tradition.
* Lenexa, Kansas, home of Paul Kirk, the "Baron of BBQ" world class cookoff champion and our Mentor and Hero
Presently my dinner arrives. The short rib is served in a bed of sauce and grits. It was good, though probably not worth the $25 price tag. Then again, diner was on the company tonight.
As for whether Virgil's is the best barbecue in the city, I really couldn't say since I didn't sample any other barbecue.
All I know is that it's no Oklahoma Joe's.

On our last night of visiting the Big Apple, My sister, my friend Erik and myself decided to walk around Time Square one last time.We came across this fine dining establishment called Virgil's Real BBQ. What a treat!! My sister and I split an entree known as the "Virgil's Pig out "which had Ribs,Chicken,Brisket,Pulled Pork, and Texas link! and of course it came with 2 sides and cornbread.. We got the Memphis Beans and Mac and Cheese.. I also ordered a tall Frothy Brooklyn Pilsner to wash down my top notch meal.. The chicken was very dry, everything else was very delightful!

It consisted of the following: HUSH PUPPIES, corn dogs, BBQ chicken, BBQ ribs, popcorn shrimp, and I know I'm forgetting something else...... But anyway, everything was DELICIOUS, especially them hush puppies.... Whoooo wheeee... I couldn't keep my hands off of them suckers... It was my first time eating those, and now, I want MORE!! We also had a side of french fries and some YUMMY mac n cheese.... One of the best mac n cheese I've had....
I'm making myself hungry.
Wow! is all I can say.
I went here and I'm thinking....ok its going to be crap..BBQ in the middle of Times Square..I figured the usual, touristy, overpriced food but boy was I wrong!
I've had a lot of BBQ too so I know what I'm talking about!
The BBQ sauce was AMAZING and it was slathered on everything. Not in an overpowering way but in a perfectly yummy way! I had the Shrimp and brisket and also some of my uncle's wings. So good!
Sides are also amazing...mac&cheese, baked bean! Absolute heaven!
The service is also awesome, ambiance is cool...all around a great place if you want some really good BBQ!
It's a bit pricey but totally worth it...I think I mentioned I was with my uncle..lol definitely not a place a little ol' college girl can afford!
