Category: Breakfast & Brunch [Edit]
Neighborhood: Manhattan BeachSo I visit my bro in LA and ask him to pick a place for breakfast....of kors thy vain family member picks one named after thyself....lol...Well...I'm a breakfast junkie so I love American diners so I agreed...especially when they overlook a great view like Manhattan Beach..hell yeah. So I ate "Mitch's Special"....WOW. Scrambled eggs with cheese cheese and jalepenos---I've never had this combo...it's so freakin good; golden hashbrowns, and some fluffy pancakes.

Ambiance - 3 stars
Small breakfast restaurant overlooking Manhattan Beach. Very nice Southern California down by the beach vibe. However, I hear this place is super duper crowded on weekends. I'd give it 2 stars because it's such a small venue, BUT... because it's a block from the beach and I LOVE the beach... I'll give it 3.
Service - 3 stars
We ate here on a Thursday afternoon. The service was good. Food and drinks were served quickly. Our waitress was attentive. Nothing out of the oridinary.
Quality of Food - 5 stars
I LOVE pancakes! My boyfriend ordered 12 silver dollars for $6. I had eggs and pancakes; went with banana nut. The pancakes were delicious! Having pancakes out on the patio with a great view of the beach is my idea of So Cal life.
Pricing - 5 stars
For the area, the price wasn't bad. Similar pricing to say IHOP.
This place earns having pancake house in its title for sure!!!
Hands down one of the best, fluffiest pancakes I have ever had and it was even the plain buttermilk kind, but I could not get enough of it!! Their raspberry syrup on top is simply divine and is basically like liquid sugar topping for your pancake which always makes breakfast a party!!
For a cheap breakfast in a popular spot within walking distance to the beach, this place simply cannot be beat. The amount of food you get is incredible for the price you pay, especially with their omelet plates!
For $7.50 I got the greek omelet with feta cheese, tomatoes, onions and it was topped with 2 kalamato olives and that came with hashbrowns and 2 buttermilk pancakes!!! I KNOW SO MUCH FOOD!! I definitely did not feel confident about going from this place at brunch to the beach to tan in my two piece at all! But that happens with good food!
As I said the pancakes are a must, the hashbrowns are super tasty and my boyfriend absolutely LOVED his blueberry waffle (although for the price we though he was getting two but oh well, since I had SO MUCH FOOD he ate half of my plate since there was no way I was ever going to finish that much). My omelet could have better to be honest though...the eggs were not cooked that well and there could have been a little more feta cheese since I am a cheese addict, but all of the ingredients inside the omelet were tasty and I ended up eating all of the inside and not all of the eggs on the outside.
So go to Bill's for its namesake PANCAKES and try not to go straight to the beach afterwards....because you wouldn't want to be mistaken for a beached whale after taking in that much food at one time! ha ha

I tried coming here on a weekend and I decided not to wait an hour in line. Came back on a weekday and there was no wait, unless you wanted the outside seating which is pretty nice and all with the sun and ocean breeze. I shared a couple of omelets, the Manhattan and one with cream cheese, I forget its name. They were probably the best omelets I've had. I thought the pancakes were good and fluffy too. Sure as hell beats Denny's and IHOP!

They have great pancakes! I got one of their daily specials, pumpkin spiced pancakes, back in the fall last year and they were delicious. My bf had an omelette and he liked it as well. Service was fair, but they tried to keep my coffee cup filled. I did come on the weekend around 10am and the wait was rather long if you had parties more than 2. Parking is tough, but I was lucky to get a metered spot right up the street. I would definitely come again.
Uncle Bill's has the fluffiest, yummiest pancakes! Their bacon is nice and thick, the sausage is always good, and their eggs are also great.
My only complaint is that they have the WORST waffles in the world and very bad coffee. Sigh. I guess you can't have it all.

good deal. where else can you get an omelette, hash browns, and 2 pancakes for around $8 without sacrificing quality for price? the pancakes were fluffy and the omelette was a generous size, a huge upgrade from your typical IHOP or denny's (which is probably the same price if not more, i might add).
as if that wasn't enough, it's next to the beach. you can enjoy awesome socal weather and the sea breeze as you have brunch outside on the patio...it doesn't get much better than that.

Something about the SOCAL harsh blinding morning rays that drive a man to hunger....
so I yelped around and found this spot while down in the area....and can vouch to how long the lines can get....they can get really long so you got to time it right and go like me @ 1pm or so (fortunately that's when I wake up). ;D
The service........they were really nice and great however...were a tad less than attentive.
That aside though, I came for the food and I would go back again for the food. The Manhattan omelette thing was great, the hash brown was fantastic, the pancakes were just right, and the there was practically an entire avocado on top of my food....I've never seen that much avocado on my food before. It was tasty. Not to mention that there was a special I had to try - sweet potato fries....
hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm so good!!!
Till the next time....
Nice little breakfast/lunch place hidden from the main roadway along the Manhattan Beach Pier Area. The lines are long so get there early if you want a seat. The food is good and I find it better than Ocean's Diner, IHOP and even the Original Pancake house.
The distance to the ocean is a plus and you get to walk by all these ocean front homes. Nice!

Ive been there about 4 times and eaten there once. The line is outrageous, which leads you to believe the food is forbidenly good, but it's just breakfast. It's not like the pancakes are made of honey-batter and dipped in perfection just before serving. You can order a full meal at waffle house and leave a healthy tip for the same price of one dish at Uncle Bill's. I suggest, for a solid breakfast at a more reasonable price you go next door to Ocean View Cafe. Or better yet, stay in line, and I'll eat next door before you've had a chance to sit down.
Then again, if you haven't been before, check it out and see what all the fuss is about. It's likely you'll disagree with me, then again, it's just breakfast. If I go somewhere at 10am, it's because I want to eat at 10:15, not an hour later.

I came here this morning for a lovely brunch with good friends. We had a big party of 8 people but ended up splitting tables so that we could get seated earlier. We ended up sitting on the patio, which was a little crowded. This weekend has been so unbelievably hot and I was the unfortunate one that didn't get complete cover by the umbrellas and left with a burnt right arm, but that didn't really take away from the yummy food that I ate. I ordered the corned beef hash and eggs, which came with your choice of muffins, toast or 2 pancakes. I ended up getting the pancakes and for 2 more bucks got strawberries and whipped cream on top. The corned beef hash was quite scrumptious and they made my eggs over easy just perfect so that I could mix it in with the corned beef hash. The hash browns were good, but nothing special. Pancakes were very fluffy and their boysenberry syrup went perfectly with the strawberries. The service was also great considering they were so busy, and the servers were sure to keep our glasses filed with ice cold beverages! Needless to say, I left stuffed and satisfied. I will definitely come here again for brunch on a lovely day!
ME: "Dude, what are you gonna order?"
CHONG: "I don't know, man. I'm thinking about the corned beef hash. What about you, Cox?"
COX: "Everything looks pretty good, but the corned beef caught my eye the most. What you thinkin', HuHa?"
ME: "Corned Beef Hash, baby!!"
CHONG: "Wait up. Does that mean we're... gay?? We're ordering the same meal!"
ANDREA: "Oh my God," she says putting her head down in shame.
This is a typical juvenile type of conversation my college friends and I share when I head to LA to visit them. But instead of eating cup o' noodles and drinking Steel Reserve (if you know this drink, give yourself a high five) like back in San Luis Obispo, we now venture out and hit up quality restaurants, bars and clubs everywhere we can. Uncle Bill's has been a favorite of Chong's for a long time considering his father used to come here when he was a teenager, too.
Yes, we each ordered the corned beef hash, although I got my eggs over easy and theirs were scrambled. The corned beef was amazing, as the meat was crispy on the outside and very flavorful and juicy on the inside. We sat outside and enjoyed the beautiful So Cal weather (in December!)
Although Andrea thought we were acting like a bunch of adolescents (which when together, is completely true,) we all had an great time here. We learned that three guys ordering the same meal doesn't mean you're gay (not that there's anything wrong with it.) It just means that corned beef hash at Uncle Bill's is damn good!

I love diner food and this place makes me reminisce the old days in Chitown eating at Hollywood Grill and White Palace. Ah well, the wait here always seems to be '35 minutes'... just enough to keep you around but not long enough to make you go elsewhere. The only negative here beside the long wait is the coffee. It tastes like you're licking an old brick. The positives are the fast service, awesome pancakes, tasty omeletes, ample parking, and of course nice location just steps from the pier/beach.
Last February when i was asked to meet my friend at Bill's for lunch, I was unenthusiastic. But with a stroll up the beach from Redondo I figured anything could taste good - even someplace that was probably over hyped.
WRONG! It was not over-hyped. Just the aroma of the food had me changing my plan from the usual lunch fare to a full breakfast. I could not have ask for a better first meal after having arrived from Texas thatn Bill's bacon, eggs, toast (not pancakes for me), oatmeal, OJ and hot tea. Yes, salt air does something for my appetite, but usually it craves fish, so this was the quality of the kitchen that put me in binge mode.
Next time I may have to stay in Manhattan Beach instead of Redondo, so I don't have to go as far to eat.

Breakfast is officially my favorite meal of the day! I visited Uncle Bill's for the first time last weekend with some friends, and I can't wait to go back! They have a great menu with something for everyone: vegans, restrictive diets, and carnivores! I had a mushroom, cheese, and green onion omelette with a stack of banana buckwheat pancakes - this combo was nothing short of a breakfastasy! Also, I should mention that the server was especially mindful of my kosher/halal diet and made sure to have all utensils and pans washed prior to making my meal.
One thing to note - if you're short on time - you may want to visit another establishment. Be prepared to wait in line along with a hungry mob of people. However, Uncle Bill's is worth the wait - the food, the comfortable atmosphere, and great Manhattan Beach vibe make this place my new #1 breakfast joint!

I did it.... I FINALLY did it.... I conquered the long ass wait at Uncle Bill's. We put in our name and since our wait time was 35-45 minutes we decided to walk over to the Coffee Bean. It's a good thing I didn't get anything at the bean because the coffee at Uncle Bill's was terrific. I'm not a big coffee drinker (maybe 1 cup a week, if that) but when I do have coffee I like it exactly how they serve it at UB's.
We were seated in the outdoor patio which is tiny and cramped, but it gets the job done. I had a small issue with the little birds that kept flying through the patio area. Twice the bird flew so close to my face it practically touched my eyelashes. Had these not been hose cute little birds that hop around and had they been pigeons, I would have been freaking out.
The menu is so vast and everything sounded so amazing that I had trouble deciding what to order; An omelet? a cheddar or bacon waffle? A sandwich? Eggs sunny side up with wheat toast? I was at a loss.... My first veto victim was the eggs/toast since I can make that so easily at home, then it was the waffle (thank goodness cuz my friend ordered it and said she couldn't taste the cheddar and it was the measliest waffle I've ever seen) I couldn't decide which omelet I wanted so I went with a sourdough sandwich which was perfect! Especially because they had cholula!
Next time I'll have the paper handy so I'll have something to read while we wait, I won't order the salad as a side and come to think of it... I'll actually order breakfast!

Despite the throng of people waiting outside of Uncle Bill's, we put our name on the list and were told the wait was 20-25 minutes. Somehow, we lucked out and only ended up having to wait for 5! One nice thing about waiting is that they have some chairs outside so that you can sit down and get comfortable. If you do end up waiting a while, use this opportunity to chat with your party because once you get a table, you will likely feel pressured to eat and move on since there are lots of hungry people dying for you to hurry up and leave already.
The multigrain pancakes were light and fluffy. The coffee was good. It's noisy and crowded inside, so you might want to consider a nice, leisurely walk down to the beach afterwards to de-stress from the crowded breakfast experience.

This place was great, right when my party and I got there we got a seat outside looking at the beach. The food was great and priced very reasonably. I ordered the New York steak and Eggs... and they were awesome, the pancakes were delicious! YUMMY! The service was great. Our waitress was so kind(THANKS FOR ALLOWING ME TO CHANGE MY TOAST TO PANCAKES at the end)
I also had some of my friends guacamole burger and that was awesome as well.
When i come back down to SoCal, i'm definitely hitting up this place for breakfast again.

What's not to love about Uncle Bill? This place has a great cup of diner joe and a some mean omelettes, but then there are those pancakes...YUM!
This is definitely a standard of the MB community. The service is excellent and the food comes fast and furious. They have that greasy spoon vibe without the major grease.
They always have a few delicious specials and today I had the Catalina omelette - chicken, peppers, onions and jack cheese. How can you not love that? Their homemade salsa goes really well with eggs and It's not your typical salsa and has more of a Spanish flavor.
I have to admit I've only gone for breakfast food. I can't seem to try anything else on the menu.
This place is always packed on the weekends, so if you are a loner (like me) and want food quickly...you can usually find a seat by the counter. You can enter from the second door and slide in on a counter seat. First come, first serve counter space.
When I come to LA - I never miss visiting Uncle Bill at least once on my trip.

The absolute best breakfast place in all of South Bay and possibly Los Angeles. Not only would I pay twice as much for their quality fare, I can't believe they wouldn't want to charge more.
I would recommend any of the pancakes because, so far, I haven't been let down by any of their choices. I'm also a big fan of their heavier fare when the mood strikes you.
I've never had a problem with the lines, mostly because I go during the week, but I have found the staff very friendly and efficient like others have noted.

I love Uncle Bill's!!
This is a local favorite, and fantastic place to have breakfast. There is a wait, but anything in Manhattan Beach that is any good will require one. (and like someone else said here ... dont like it, keep walking)
My favorite thing is the Bacon Wrap. Eggs, bacon and cheese in your choice of wheat, sun-dried tomato or spinach tortilla. Add the side of fruit (they have great papaya) and I am set. This for breakfast I am full most of the day.
The staff, atmosphere and patio all add to the experience.
The newspaper stands are good for the wait, or just people watch there on Highland Ave.

Here's what you do:
Have someone run in, put your name on the list- go shopping for an hour. Check back.
The best breakfast place around.
Bring in your own coffee (unless you are not a picky coffee drinker).
I love places that serve turkey sausage.
How do people sit there waiting for an hour? Oh my gosh!!!

Uncle Bill's is a Manhattan Beach institution. I don't think I've ever made a trip down to MB without going to Uncle Bill's at least once during the visit.
They're just pancakes. Frikkin' good pancakes. With frikkin' good hash browns. Their omelets are pretty tasty as well (and large - the size of an overstuffed burrito). But there's more to Uncle Bill's than the food - it embodies the laid back attitude of Manhattan Beach and on any given Saturday or Sunday, you might run into Nomar and Mia (who live just blocks away) or some of the other celebrity athletes that live in town (I saw some Dodgers player last time, but forget his name). But the difference here is that no one will bat an eye at the celebrity - they're just another Manhattan Beacher having breakfast.

Hmmm my favorite is their banana pancake, with a side of bacon and a cup of strong black coffee. I didn't need a lot of syrup on my pancake cause its delicious the way it is. In fact too much syrup will ruin it. I don't mind waiting in line for a while cause its worth it! I think I'm gonna eat here for breakfast this saturday.

Good food, and lots of it. I absolutely love JD's French Toast here. Most dishes come with an insane amount of side food, so show up hungry.
The setting is perfect for brunch on sunny California mornings. It's within sight of the beach, and the place is warm, busy, and bright. There's also a small outdoor terrace. Expect long lines on weekends; the wait for a table is usually at least 30 minutes by mid-morning. I prefer just heading to the bar--same food, faster service.

After getting into a discussion about the glories of breakfast food with friends (as I was eating eggs-and-bacon at 12:30 in the morning after a movie screening), Uncle Bill's came up and I was shocked to realize how long it had been since I've been there. Plus, I was sick of all of the rhapsodic talk about The Griddle, seeing that on a good day, it takes me 40 minutes to get there.
Today, I remedied that, getting in just under their 3 PM closing time and getting the amazing Bacon-Cheddar Waffle, which may be the greatest breakfast food ever invented. It's on my short-list for things I'll ask for when the Last Meal is offered to me on Death Row.
Cheap and extremely tasty fare-- the breakfast side of the menu is split almost evenly between pancakes, waffles and omelettes, with a ton of different and affordable combo options. The menu didn't seem to have changed much since I'd been there last. The staff are quick, friendly and no slouches -- at least at the bar -- with my frequent coffee refills. Yes, the place can get insanely crowded. And yes, table service can drag out a bit. But it's worth it, if just for that sacred Bacon-Cheddar waffle.
FYI, central Manhattan Beach is now metered to the gills 9 AM to 8 PM 7 days a week. Be sure to bring a fistful of quarters with you-- you'll need some walking-around time down to the pier and the beach to attempt to work off the calories you've just absorbed.

You don't need to put syrup on these pancakes. If you do, there's no need to drench them. They're just so good on their own... the right combination of fluffy, buttery, greasy, and lacy on the edges. The flavor is rich and satisfying. Be prepared for a wait on weekend mornings... but come hungry. The portions are really generous.

I saw the good reviews on yelp and decided to try the place. I am a lover of omelettes and coffee and this place makes some mean omelettes and hashbrowns. The food was tastey. Other than the sparrows fighting for our food and that one fearless fly that kept on landing on my pancakes, I would say the patio area is very pleasant and would highly recommend sitting outside on a beautiful day. One thing that bothered me is the close proximity between the coffee machine (and exposed filter and coffee beans) and the bathroom and the mild odor that emitted from that area.

The wait was not so bad on Xmas Eve because we sat at the counter. My expectations were pretty high on my first visit and I was a bit disappointed. My food was served luke warm, a big no-no for breakfast. On the positive side: we were easily able to customize our orders. I got scrambled eggs with green peppers, and although they were generous with the peppers, they should have been less crunchy. Dollar pancakes were good as was the syrup, but coffee was a tad bitter.
Uncle Bill's is cute inside and out, just up a walk street from the beach. Can't beat the location, but you can definitely find a better breakfast.

Uncle Bill, thank you for putting an enormous glob of sour cream and meat sauce onto omelettes, for enough pancake selections to never be bored, simpleton omelettes with just cheese and avocados, omelettes stuffed with everything in the kitchen, and bacon waffles. I have to wean myself off Bill's so I can try all the other places on Highland.
If I were to grade the quality of my own food I'd probably only give it three stars--but I like this place because I like that it's ocean-side, and the people were very friendly. Food also came pretty fast (I did sit at the counter, though). The place definitely had charm.
I'd want to go back, because the menu had tons of interesting items and specials, and the turkey wrap I got was a little boring.
*UPDATE 05/06/07*
Okay, I went back, and was pretty impressed. I had the Istanbul Omelet, which was turkey, sour cream, and swiss cheese. Date had blueberry pancakes, which were excellent. Considering the popularity, location, and yumminess, the prices are excellent. My omelet was $8 but I realized it also came with hashbrowns and my choice of 2 pancakes, 2 muffins, or toast. I think the menu is pretty interesting and everyone else's food also looked pretty delicious (including some french toast meal that is topped with a mountain of strawberries and bananas). I'm looking forward to going back to try the other stuff!

A friend and I stopped over to Uncle Bill's on Sunday morning. I was starving and needed a greasy breakfast to help cure a hangover and this was the spot!
Yeah, it's a typical diner really, but the location is what set's it apart. The location gives it four stars alone. My God, the view! If there is a long wait, just put your name in and walk down to the beach. The walk will wake you up and give you a big appetite for all of the food! The portions are huge. I really enjoyed my omlette and hashbrowns, but the macadamia pancakes really didn't impress me. They were just buttermilk pankcakes with macadamia nuts thrown on top. I was expecting the nuts to be actually cooked into the batter I guess.
Despite the MB location, the prices are very reasonable. You can't beat a huge breakfast for $7.50 (not including a drink). And after breakfast you can hang at the ocean or check out all of the great shopping in the area.

Fantastic breakfast spot!
Huge portions of yummy healthy breakfast food (I can dream right?) served with large fluffy pancakes. I always get the plain buttermilk pancakes with fresh strawberries. For a beach spot, which is insanely busy they have wonderful service. I"ve never had to wait more than 2 minutes for someone to ask what I wanted to drink.
Warning: Do not come here on weekends especially during the weekends or warm days. It's so crowded you may wait 30 minutes to 2 hours.
Tip: They close at 3p.m. I've had great luck with no waits if I show up after 2:30 p.m. right before they close.

I'm not going to drive my ass off to the South Bay to get pancakes, I can get good ones in LA, you know?
Try their waffle, their Bacon Waffle! Not that thick slab shit you normally find elsewhere but the thin, crusty, golden-brown, with bits and pieces of crunchy, salty bacon baked inside the batter.
And please, don't massacre your waffle with a gallon of melted butter and maple syrup. Shame on you if you do, tsk, tsk, shame on you.

Wonderful place for breakfast by the beach--what could be better? The wait wasn't too bad cause my friend and I requested a spot at the counter. Our waitress was super nice and quick. I ordered the sour dough french toast and my only complaint is that it looked and tasted more like plain white toast. Whatever--it was still tasty, but some hint of sour dough would have been nice.
Definitely worth a stop in...plus there are really cute shops nearby if the wait is ridiculously long.
