don't come here if you're a vegetarian! I ordered the vegetarian dish that has a combination of some different selections, and it was bland and tasteless. I guess this place might be good if you're a carnivore!

I don't get this place.  It's really overpriced, the services is not at all friendly, I don't find the atmosphere fun, and the food is totally unremarkable.   Yet, it's always crowded.  Weird.

This place is close to my house, so I've been here several times, and I still can't remember what I ate as the food was so... average.  I just remember being disappointed that the check so expensive.  To be honest, the food is probably more around the three star mark, but I am forced to deduct a star for the poor value and overall experience.

If I'm going to drop this kind of cash for Mexican food, I'm going to Las Palmas on North Avenue instead.  Much better food and service.

I really like this place. I've never been to Adobo, and some of my friends are always raving about their table side guacamole, lavish drinks, and yummy food.

I would have to agree with them. I was very impressed by the wonderful service we got from Melanie. She was very helpful on what appetizers, and what sorts of entrees were the best. We ordered the table side guacamole, which everyone raves about. Unfortunately it wasn't that much for 4 people. One my friends who loves Adobo said that it seemed a lot smaller than it used to be. But the flavor was very good. We also ordered the 4 samplers of the salsa. I wasn't very impressed with this platter as well. All of the red salsas tasted the same, except the salsa verde. I was hoping that my entree was going to be great.

My entree Camerones de la Ajo was sooo delicious. There were 8 large jumbo shrimp that seemed to be marinated in garlic puree. Grilled to perfection, and served with rice. It was so good, I wanted to lick my plate. The drinks were also very tasty. I had a mojito to start with, and then finished off with a house margarita. It was very tart--but that is how I like em.

I'll be back. I just hope next time the salsa, and guacamole will serve up to the hype. Oh yeah, the patio is the place to be! Especially on a warm summer night!

I feel like I enjoyed this place more the last time I was there which was only a few months ago. My recommendation is not to get the vegetarian plate. It has a zucchini stuffed with goat cheese (pretty good) and then a very gummy, cornmeal type cake baked with figs (too sweet for dinner and sticky, gummy texture once you attempt to chew it). There were a couple other items on the plate but overall that dish was disappointing. On the otherhand, the pork chop and the grilled chicken with you choice of rub were both delicious and the guac is always a safe bet! A Mexican restaurant is just not the place to go for vegetarian fare! The margaritas were alright and the mojitos were satisfactory though not as potent or fresh tasting as Nacional 27 or other places.

i've gotta say, i like this place less and less every time i come...and i won't be coming again...

everything is very over-priced, starting with the key to any high-end mexican joint, the guac...and their guac just ain't that good...sure, it's ok and it's cute that they make it at tableside...but i'd rather they just make that shit in the back, and make it better, and then charge me $2 less...it's just not cool, especially since they only use 1 avocado...poor...

the other food is eh...some of it is terrible...last time went with the lady, and her chilaquiles were burnt and soggy at the same time...didn't think that was possible, but it is...terrible...

my mexican eggs benedict was good, but all of their dishes tend to taste the same...they use the same sauces on everything, at least it tastes that way...

obviously, not a fan...

I been to both Adobo locations several times, but decided to wait to review until I'd given their Tequila menu an overall try, so here I go.

1. The one thing I cannot stop raving about is their guacamole, which is made table-side! You choose the "hotness" level you wish (mild, medium, and spicy) and you immediately see ingredients getting tossed into the serving bowl. Salt, lime, onions, cilantro, tomatoes, peppers, avocado! The works! I hope this is all sounding exciting, because it truly is delicious.

2. The food in general is very tasty and would be considered an upscale approach to typical Mexican dishes. You will find anything from a Jicama-Mango salad to three cheese Empanadas to Chipotle Marinaded steak and more! I've experimented with different dishes every time, and have yet to be disappointed. If you can make it to breakfast/brunch on the weekend, the Chicken Chilaquiles are to die for!

3. The decor of both locations is very colorful and welcoming. Adobo is filled with perfect dim-lighting, bright colors, and lively music. You couldn't ask more for a night out with friends. The service is also excellent and will never fail to be friendly.

4. The drinks selection largely revolves around tequila. Everyone seems to love the margaritas, and wouldn't be lying to recommend them. Although I won't go as far as saying that they're the best I've ever had, you can still taste the juice and quality tequila in all of their drinks. I would also recommend their mojitos, or if you're looking for something  more a la "party in your mouth" try their Adobopolitan, which is their own personal take on the Cosmos. (It involves pomogranate juice, tequila, and gran torres if I do believe). Be warned though, all of their drinks sure do pack a punch!

This place is phenomenal. The specials will keep me coming back often. The drinks are perfect every time. We usually order several appetizers, all of the daily special apps and the guacamole. Your server makes the green dip table side. They allow and even encourage your input for the perfect outcome. The salsa sampler should not be skipped. Dessert is wonderful with the after dinner coffee.  They do this orange, cinnamon twist on the beverage of the roasted bean. I am a bit of a Flan snob, Adobo gets it pretty right. You should leave room for it.

So I really like the place a lot - even if for some weird reason I feel like I shouldn't. I am usually not a huge fan of group restaurants because I believe in the virtues of crafmanship but really this place knows how to please people. I tried a lot of different things on the menu and everything has always been very good. I particularly appreciate the effort they put into the side dishes - it's so easy to rely on the standard rice and beans for a Mexican restaurant but they do an excellent job in that compartment. Excellent guacamole of course, and I am a huge fan of their churros for dessert. One of my staples in Chicago.

The Chile Relleno is so good here, I get it every time we've been to Adobo. I don't get anything else because its so good. The ambiance is great and the staff friendly. This is a great place to go out with a ton of friends or just with a couple. Its also a great place to go to sit at the bar and have drinks!

Over-priced, fancied up tex-mex food. It seems like everything on the menu is coated in mole sauce, which is alright, but I need more options! Sure, sure, the guac made table-side is good, but nothing I couldn't easily do at home for 1/3 of the price! Portions are pretty small compared to the gluttony you expect at a Mexican restaurant. I'd take Picante (across the street from the Wicker Park location) any day!

Unfortunately, some visits to restaurants are so lousy as to prevent you from ever giving them a second chance.

That's what happened to me at Adobo.

Maybe their specialty is meat - this would explain why everything I tried (the couple of only vegetarian options) was completely lousy.  The fresh guacamole wasn't bad at all.  Too bad it was such a skimpy little portion (conveniently masked in a very thick bowl).

It seemed as though Adobo was trying so hard to be fancy and unique that they completely sacrificed flavor.  Not actually even related to Mexican food - more like Tex-Mex kitchen experiments gone wrong.

Granted, this visit was just over a year ago.  Still, it left it's mark so strongly that it's become the butt of jokes ever since.

I was a bit disappointed with Adobo Grill. I went with a group of 7 people so of course there were a few picky eaters. Their menu wasn't as approachable as I thought it would be. There were some fish tacos and one type of enchiladas but everything else was a gourmet / traditional dish. It seemed to take us all FOREVER to read through everything and decide on what we wanted. Nothing jumped out for any of us right away. The food was all good, but not great.

Service was pretty bad the night we went, but it was Cinco de Mayo. We got there early but as the place filled up we were waiting about a half an hour for each order of a BEER! That was just ridiculous. They brought us wrong drinks. One of us got the wrong food.

Overall, I would go again if someone else suggested it - because the house margarita's and guacamole was really good - but I will not be suggesting it for anyone.

I wish I liked the entrees here more.  The guacamole and margaritas are fantastic and keep me coming back here, but the entrees always leave me disappointed.

The vibe is good and the servers are friendly, so my advice is to come to Adobo for some guacamole and a few margaritas and hit your favorite taco spot on the way home for your entree.

So went here with a friend to kill time and was quite disappointed. I mean it's a nice atmosphere inside really nice lookin classy place but I think there prices are over rated. They do have a massive amount of tequila here so if your a tequila lover you'll like this place.  Had some appetizers and some drinks which were pretty tasty but once again not worth the price to me.  Probably won't go back here.

Ok, so it's no Las Palmas, Topolobampo or even a Maiz but it's still pretty good.  To be honest, i had actually boycotted this place for about a year due to them charging for chips and salsa - i know, the effing nerve, right!....however, we decided to lift the ban as it were, because after careful deliberation and consideration, felt that its location was just too convenient to offer up a  lifetime embargo on the place...plus the food, iirc, was pretty good (and they have a sizable tequila menu).

ANYway, so we go, and as is customary w. a 1 year old, we go relatively early, like 6p, so that assures us immediate entry and seating.  We had a fairly indifferent server with a menacing eye turned toward our angelic precious babe who, incidentally, sat quietly stuffing his little face full of cheerios....we quickly got beyond our servile servers attitude and ordered up a few Margs and a kiddie cocktail for the bambino.

I forgot that they had a rather large antojitos section on the menu, and since we were in a mix and match sort of mood, did just that.  Went with the Empanades which were stuffed with asadero and panela cheese, fresh corn, poblano rajas and epazote....yea, they were damn good at a 4/5.

Also chose the Steak Skewers with Oaxaquea salsa which, upon arrival, looked like something out of the movie Hellboy, what with the 6-8 skewers stuck into the salsa and quite literally protruding off of the plate as if to take us out right there...also good but more 3/5.  Rounded out the meal w the Tacos de Pescado, which were fish tacos w negra modelo battered tilapia...very good at a 4/5.

Oh, and the Chips and Salsa? Yes, we did go there and they were debatably worth the $4 price tag.  The chips were a bit meh, but  you do get four types of salsa's thus justifying the charge I suppose...3/5.

Overall a 3.5/5 and we'll prob find ourselves there again sometime this summer.

This restaurant has saved many o' evenings on the verge of ruin from neighboring restaurant, BRAVO (since closed, thank god).  SO many times our reservations were lost at Bravo and Adobo was happy to poach us and give us one of the best seats in the house (or on the patio).

The guac is great, and their version of Carne Asada is so good that I ordered it four times before I tried anything else on the menu (it has the guacamole ON it). Now, I am onto their shrimp dishes which I believe vary with the seasons but outstanding every time.  The drinks are pricey, but they will get you drunk if that's what you are into.

The really good food aside, the biggest reason why I love this place is because of the service.  The hostess and servers are really accomodating, and like I said they have save many nights headed towards disaster due to some fiasco that Bravo created.  They have really gone above and beyond the call.

Overall, this is a nice classy Mexican restaurant.  The decor and atmosphere is nice a swank, good for a date.  The guacamole prepared table-side is amazing, so fresh and delicious.  I had a margarita which was awesome.  I had the Camarones Cently which was good but not amazing.  My date had the Poc Chuc which was much better.  Overall, it was a little pricey, but for the atmosphere, guacamole, margarita and some of the food it was worth it.

We went to dinner here with friends last night and it didn't quite live up to my memory of the Wells St Adobo that I had gone to a few years ago.  The food was good but nothing to get excited about.  The guacamole was of course great but fairly small amount for the price.  The margaritas were ok, better than most but a little too sour.  We had fun but it was really kind of an average dining experience.  I might go back if someone suggested it.  It was good food but again, really just average.

OK, here we go.
Adobo grill.  (sigh)

The restaurant is nice. I'll give it that but unfortunately I came here to eat. Yeah i know, going to a restaurant to eat. It's crazy but it's just something I do.
My date and I sit down, look over the menu and decide what we'd like to have.
We both order a tilapia meal. Again, TILAPIA. OK, nothing fancy.
We had water to drink with our meal. Ordered some guacamole. Had some chips. Talked a bit, then the meal came.
The "meal" was served on desert plates. These tiny little plates with a sad piece of tilapia in the middle.
Once the "meal" was over (1 minute later) we ordered a shot of tequila each.
Lets sum it up:  Water to drink. Guacamole side. 2 Tilapia 'dinners" (served on desert plates) and two shots of tequila.
The bill (with tip): $120.
yep.

The only part of the meal that was enjoyable was the guacamole which is surprising because I'm generally not a fan of the stuff.

Definitely not worth it.

5 stars???  For this place?  No no no.

The guacamole table-side is good but ridiculously overpriced ($9 for a ONE-avacado dip?).  The margaritas are also quite good if overpriced (we had a big group so I asked about margarita pitchers.  i was snootily told that all drinks were "custom made" for individual's taste...i guess that means no pitchers).

Nicole B must be some kind of nymph to consider the appetizer items to be "normal" sized food.  The $8 taco appetizer my friend ordered consisted of two tacos approx the size of my palm.  I'd consider that about 1/2 of a meal.  Others had similar items of the same size.  I ordered the aztec chicken entree and indeed was impressed with the size and presentation of the food.  The real disappointment kicked in when I found my knife was incapable of cutting through the chicken (a little tough?).  When I finally managed to saw off a piece I found it to be both tough and lacking any flavor.  Who knew a $20 chicken breast could be so bad?  My roommate ordered chili relleno..it also came out looking beautiful but was quickly found to be bland and not quite cooked.

Between the guac, margarita, and entree I spent $35 on myself...and I would have been much better served spending $5 at the local tacqueria.

Let me get this straight. The Guacamole is a good 5 stars and the Daquiri's are another 5 stars. The food I give a 3, hence the 4.

When I went it was rather crowded (okay, very crowded) and loud (not a fan). I don't really like competing with blasting latin music and the drunk office party next to me, but after a daiquiri that was make a little better. The food was definitely spicy, and I guess that is why you would go. I am not a huge extra-tasty-spicy-mouth blowing spicy food, so my selection was a little limited. I ordered some sort of steak and I can't honestly say it blew my mind.

I think going back during the week and avoiding the weekend crowd might be a better experience for me, and haven't ruled the place out completely.

I adore this place!

Any night of the week, it's easy to get a table. Their margaritas are spectacular, as well as their table side guacamole.

If you order from their appetizer list, you get a normal portion of food. If you order their entrees, you get a TON of food.

Great service, too.

Went to Adobo early tonight with my friend Al and his 2 kids under 3 for dinner and it was very good.

I did like the table side guacamole that they make to taste. Also had a couple of  very smooth margaritas.  My entree was one of the weekly specials: grouper on polenta with mole and mango.  He had the chicken enchiladas. Both were really good.  Specifically with mine the mole rocked and had a bit o' kick.  Then we hit the a dessert of chocolate tamal with vanilla ice-cream and it was super.

The service was rock solid.  It was a little slow for them that night so even the chef came out and talked to us--very nice and knowledgeable.  And they did not mind that we were feeding the kids some of the crispix and squash we  brought. They also provided kids menus that the 2+ year old could color, high chairs and parked the stroller.

Perhaps on weekend and brunch that others have been to it has not been good or worked for kids, but tonight it was smooth sailing for our party and very tasty to boot.

I always enjoy Adobo- I really like the atmosphere and the food and service is consistently good.  This weekend was no exception.  We were a little late for our reservation, but it wasn't a problem - we were seated right away.  Our server was prompt with the drinks, though we did have to tell him we were ready to order our entrees after he'd been by the table a few times without asking.

Entrees were all delicious - I had the flank steak, and my companions had the vegetarian plate, chicken enchiladas, and the duck.  Most of the drinks were very good, though the Michelada was a little on the tomato-y side for our tastes.  Not bad, just not what we're used to.

I am docking a star for the price.  I am always surprised by how much I've spent by the end of a dinner here.  It (obviously) doesn't keep me from going back, but I still think it's a bit more expensive than it should be.

i know a few people who absolutely love this place. i am more on the fence. it is pricey, but that's not surprising for the neighborhoods in which either branch is located. however, the excellent margaritas (made with real juice and not some sticky sweet syrup) are what keeps me coming back. i recommend sticking to the bar and just getting some guacamole or appetizers so you are able to make it out the door on your own after the margaritas!

Great food.  They make the guacamole table-side and have excellent margaritas.  Not a huge menu - smaller than the multi-page encyclopedias you encounter at most Mexican dining 'stablishments.  Yes, I just put an apostrophe in place of the "E."  You saw it here first.

Plus, a full gluten-free menu for my lovely fiance and her food allergy.  The place is a tad noisy and I would definitely get reservations.  Expect to wait a few minutes even if you have one.

If I could flip 6 stars, I would.
Excellent margaritas, excellent guacamole, very nice staff.
I've been to this Adobo approximately 10 times in the last 3 years and I always walk out with a smile on my face and full belly.
You don't have to go for just dinner either, its nice to stop by for brunch or after work for a drink and some chips (they have a bar).

Went for a huge party and we ate in the private room.  I love the set up for the room, good attention to deal with the menu, and great service!!  Great for big groups.  The appetizers and dessert were great, but the entree was lacking flavor DEFINITELY!!  And it is kinda pricey for Mexican food.  I probably won't ever go again unless I had an event to go to there, but it was a decent experience.

OOOPS!

I heard an interview with the owner on the radio concerning a mole brunch special.  I'd been here before for mediocre meals, but I figured I'd give the mole experience a shot.  Argh.  The place was completely nearly empty on a beautiful Sunday afternoon.  That should have been the first warning...

The deal was, you order an entree of meat and then help yourself to the buffet.  The entree would have a mole of your choice on it.  Ok...fine...good idea.

We sit down and are told that our server will be with us shortly, and that we should visit the buffet.  My girlfriend is a vegetarian, and we found that there were VERY few vegi items at the buffet, and NONE for the entree selections (our oversight initially).  We're invested at this point, so we decide to dig into the buffet.  Eh...ok at best.

So the server comes to our table after I've already finished a whole plate of buffet and I tell him the story.  "Listen, is it possible for us to get out of here without paying $20 per person since you don't have any vegetarian options and you didn't come to my table until I pretty much finished my meal?"  I said it nicely, of course.  ;-)  The waiter was a really nice guy, and it was obvious that someone forgot to tell him that we were there.

Manager comes over.  "Do you have a question about the menu?"  I tell him the situation, and he's a complete jerk.  I tell him that we'd pay the bill, of course, but we won't be back.  The manager did not care AT ALL.  I immediately told about 20 people how crappy the experience was.  The poor waiter came over and apologized.  I let him know that it wasn't his fault, and that the manager had the option to make things right, and chose not to.

So:
1)  Mediocre food.
2)  Horrible management
3)  Wacky menu and pricing

Happy hunting!

While I agree with Julie H's assessment that guacamole is just mashed up avocados with other things in it, does that same argument go to $5.00 mashed potatoes you get at Gibson's or Morton's?  Avocados are at least harder to come by than potatoes, hence the price increase.

Hey, did you know that coleslaw is just chopped cabbage and mayonnaise? Why does it even cost $2.00 at KFC?

I could go on and on, but this is about Adobo Grill, and I say, 'Give me my fresh guac.  I'll gladly pay $8.00.  Order me that bottle of Malbec I saw at Sam's Wines for $12 that you're selling for $40.  I don't give a fuuuuuuuuuck.  In fact, chiles rellenos.  Mm, mm good.  Can't I get the same thing from that Hispanic guy with the cart on Ashland and Division for a buck?  Yes, but I'd rather pay $13.00 for it.'

So, now we have two choices:  buy all these things you could probably make at home by yourself and eat alone in your closet or bring a date/friend, live beyond your means once a week just to know that you've worked hard on this money you're about to burn, and chow down, brother (or sister).  Chow down!

I write this as I'm pouring tequila and margarita mix into my blender because Adobo isn't open, and if it were, I'd rather do it myself and save myself a few bucks.  Ha!  I'm a hypocrite!

I fucking hate it when people say "Oh Adobo Grill, they have the best guacamole!"  (wow, thats my second f-bomb on Yelp today!)  Do you not realize that guacamole is nothing more than mashed up avocados with some stuff in it?  Come on, its not hard to make!  At Adobo Grill, you too can have guacamole made tableside from ONE avocado for the low price of $7.95.  Idiots.

I really wanted to love this place.  The server we had was awesome and had a great sense of humor.  And they do have a good cocktail menu.  But the food is very average.  Actually, the food reminded me of the food at Pepe's.  You know the Mexican food chain restaurant Pepe's.  We ordered the guacamole and another appetizer, and it was just o.k.  Maybe I'm spoiled by the guacamole at Carnivale.  I ordered a pork mole dish that was one of the specials.  And again, it was just o.k.  The desserts were pretty good.  Overall, not much to look forward to here.  I'll probably go back for the drinks though.

Eh, is all I have to say. The appetizers were way overpriced (as in $8 for 3 SMALL enchiladas)- and the entrees were about $20. For a little more, I'd head to Frontera and get higher-quality ingredients. The tequila selection is large, but since I don't drink the stuff, it's lost on me. The other drinks were lame- ended up with what could've been a cool drink- a chocolate martini but using "Abuelita" Mexican chocolate (used in hot chocolate that is taken for breakfast). But that was underwhelming. My Sopa Azteca was a little greasy and not too exciting... Blah....

We go to this place once every year.....to celebrate our anniversary. Other than that, we avoid it. Now, you may ask....why do you celebrate your anniversary here if you don't like it? This is where we ended up eating after meeting for the first time. It was late (10:00pm) on a snowy friday and Adobo was close by. That was our first meal together......ok, enough sappy stories!

On to the review at hand.....Adobo grill is highly overrated. The food is good but not great. The only thing good here is the 'table side' guacamole. The prices are too high for the quality of food you get. You can get better Mexican food at other restaurants in the area. They promote themselves as upscale with the pricing.

My enchiladas were decent....so, was his steak. The chocolate dessert was filling...nothing memorable, nothing to write home about

The three stars are for the guacamole, ok food, nice atmosphere, and service. The wait staff are fast and attentive.

Not worth it unless you want to take someone "special" out on a date. Chicago has many great Latin restaurants....Adobo is just not one of them.

I LOVE this place!! So I'm only part Mexican, but I grew up in a very traditional home with authentic Mexican food. So when it comes to dinning at Mexican restaurants I'm really picky. Most places are very Americanized or Tex-Mex as some call it....not my taste or flavor!!

I love me some good old homemade guacamole with the real ingredients like fresh garlic, tomatoes, onion and jalapenos  hmmm ....kinda like the one you can get at adobo grill, tangy and fresh!!!

ha, even my boys can tell the difference from good guacamole to BAD guacamole which u can find at most fast taco places.....YUCK!!

No seriously Abodo has the best Aztec Tortilla Soup, Empanadas Potosinas, Ensalada de Jicama, tamales and their Chile rellenos are so yummy!!!!! I personally love the food, the decor and the service!!

I would go there anytime of the week .....LOVE IT!!

I came here for my one year anniversary and I was super pleased! The food was really good and I love the fact they made their guacamole fresh in front of you! They will make it as you like it and I can't argue with that.

My waiter was super awesome. Forget his name. Duh! He gave us free dulce de leche dessert for our anniversary!

Maybe Sunday was an off day.

My husband and I have been here many times, mostly good and a few mediocre.  We've realized that we enjoy (and receive better service) sitting at the bar for margaritas and appetizers more than sitting in the dining room or on the patio.  The bartenders are always knowledgeable, nice and friendly, and a pleasure to talk with.

However, last Sunday there was a woman sitting at the bar whom I can only assume was a manager.  As she sat a few seats away from us, we had to endure her complaining to one employee about another saying how she "didn't fire him but..."  Then the employee being discussed was called to see her and we had to listen to her belittle him.  This is at 6pm; not in an empty restaurant!  Would it really have been that difficult to conduct this exchange in a private room or at a time when the restaurant was empty so that customers would not have to listen?

Being forced to listen to her completely ruined our experience.  We had planned on spending a couple of hours there, but left as quickly as we could after finishing our food.

We may return, but we'll be sure to watch out for that woman and leave immediately if she is near.

This review is very mixed. if you have no eating allergies. Go here the food is great and the staff is very friendly. The guacamole is 5 stars and enough reason to go alone. I went here twice before writing the review.
Now, If you have a food allergy stay away from here! Forget their gluten free menu. They are not educated enough about GLUTEN FREE AND WHAT THIS MEANS!!! The first time i went, I asked for everything gluten free. He gave me things made of flour and told me it was made from corn. When I got mad and said I could get seriously sick he changed his tune and said no maybe it is wheat. Walked off and it was wheat. Then he put it on my bill. I was sick that night. The guacamole was really good and I was hoping I would not get the same server so I wet again. 2 days later
I know, you think I would learn, NOPE! The same server, he said he was serving me gluten free. Although I was in pain again. He did not make the second mistake twice with the one ice cream cups, so I am assuming it is in the food somewhere.
This place is really delicious. They should toss the gluten free menu or know what it can do to a person if you give it to them.
I have never written a bad review but I am hoping the do something to educate themselves on food allergies. Especially the server!!

This is my favorite restaurant in Chicago!  And since I live in the burbs, I am thrilled to know that we will soon have one of our own at Yorktown!  Being from Texas, I would rather eat Mexican food than anything else.  Adobo is not Tex-Mex, not really authentic, maybe kind of haute Mexican?  My favorite dish is the Monte Alban, the guac is amazing, and the margaritas LETHAL!
