The food is always delicious and very flavorful. There's nothing subtle on the menu.

Sometimes there's too much of a good thing, i.e. onions, garlic and lemon juice can be overpowering on some of their dishes.

But I do keep coming back, because when I'm in the mood for a hearty meal and food with a kick, Versailles does it right.

Versailles in Encino, one of my first meals after moving to LA.  Good food and good memories, thus I've been back to various Versailles over time.

I'd have to say the Encino location was the best I've been to.  I usually order Lechon Asado.  The roasted pork is outstanding, very very good, albeit it may have too much onions for my liking, but very good.  The fried plantains are also pretty damn good.  The rice and beans are OK, I wasn't a big fan of the beans, so I usually skipped that.  Next time I think I need to get the Pollo Versailles.  What I wouldn't get again is the Shrimp in garlic butter.  I mean I know it's in a butter sauce, but I didn't expect 7 shrimps in a sauce probably from 2 sticks of butter.  Pretty F-ing disgusting if you ask me........

Come here for the plantains, roasted pork, and you can't go wrong!  Oh ya, I think part of 40 year old Virgin was filmed around here, the Sell it at Ebay store.

The secret to the food at Versailles: GARLIC.

If you're not a fan of garlic, don't eat here. Garlic is the key ingredient in making each dish very very tasty. The sauteed onions also give the food a kick (my younger brother HATES onions, but he'll eat them here).  I recommend the garlic chicken and salmon dish. Each dish seems very simple, served with rice and beans, with portions that translate to leftovers, yet is filled with rich savory flavor. Everything also comes with plantains (cuban fried bananas)! It's delicious, so try it.

This place is cheap and good.  When friends or family are visiting from out of town, I always take them here.  Try the Cuban style roast pork or the halibut.  The chicken is great too.  Try it out and you won't be disappointed.

Versailles has great food, super large portions. The # 6 half chicken with garlic sauce is delicious. I also recommend the lamb with wine sauce....delicious. The fried bananas are really tasty, and i can just top everything with that garlic sauce they have.
The service is not the best, but the food sure is good. On weekend the place does get crowded for dinner, but the wait is usually not long. plus the prices are very reasonable.

I wasn't very happy with Versailles. I was really excited about trying Cuban food for the first time. As I carefully read the menu over and over, I finally decided to try the grilled chicken breast, submerged in their famous garlic sauce. I was really excited about the idea of said garlic sauce. I mean, I love garlic. So this should have been a positive experience. I was even more excited about this widely talked about sauce because my best friend ordered an extra side of it. That's how stoked she was on their garlic sauce.

My food came to me on a simple plate with a lack-luster presentation. The chicken breast, which was overcooked in some parts, and under cooked and gummy in others, was smothered in grilled onions. I mean, absolutely hidden by them. I was also given a few fried Plantains, which I was very excited to try, and a plate of white rice and black beans. My food was literally floating in a pool of that famous garlic sauce. The smell hit my nose and I was no longer excited. I took a bite.

That garlic sauce was sour and without much of a flavor to me. Seriously, it tasted like stomach bile. Like, after a bad night of too much beer kind of sour. my rice and beans were good, but nothing special, and my plantains could have been lovely if they had not been drowned in that horrid sauce.

I was disappointed, because this place had been so talked up. I really set out to have a wonderful time, but it just didn't happen. I thought I had made a good choice, too, with the meal I had selected. If I'm with a group of friends and they really want to come to Versailles for some reason, I'll go and I'll eat, but I doubt I'll ever come here on my own.

Ok people,  if you in the mood to stuff yourself, this is the place to go!  I love this place.  The food is awesome, the portions are HUGE and the prices are very reasonable.

**Be forewarned - their dishes usually come with tons of onions and garlic sauce.  You will be parched and wreaking of garlic and onions for the rest of the day so be prepared!

I have tried a few things and I am stuck on one dish for the moment:  oxtail stew.  The meat is so tender and the sauce is so so good!  It comes with the usual rice, black beans and bananas.  I am getting hungry just thinking about it!  I've also tried the famous garlic chicken (which can sometimes come out hella dry) and the roast pork.  BF always has the steak and onions.  All the years we've been coming here, he hasn't switched it up.

The service is straight forward.  They greet you, take your order, drop off some yummy bread, and minutes later drop off the food.  Like I've said in my other reviews, you just gotta come here for the eats.

Def my fav cuban spot.  Parking is easy.  If the lot is full, we usually park on the side street and walk.  Try it.  You'll enjoy it and will have leftovers for the next day.

Oh flavor
Oh fall-off-the-bone goodness
Oh Mommy

Do we smell onion-y leaving this place! But it is too good to deny! I normally avoid onions, but I don't care when it comes to Versailles. Anything you get here has that homestyle taste and in large portions. We no longer live in southern Cali, but we will be back for Versailles again.

I love this place...I usually get the chicken with yellow rice...really flavorful.  I also had the garlic chicken once and boy the garlic really sticks to you.  I LOVE their bread too!  By the way - do not eat at the one in Universal City Walk...same company but the food quality is quite different...stick to the restaurant.

Man...I'm getting hungry just typing this review.  This place is awesome.  Been here half-dozen times and as much as I wanna try something new, I always get the same thing:  Famoso Pollo Versailles (Versailles Famous Garlic Chicken).  Order this dish and you'll see why it's 1) famous, 2) that I can't seem to order anything else and, 3) so good they put the restaurant's name on the dish.  You can say it's the sauce, but they cook the chicken just right.  Everytime.

Service has been excellent, save for this one time when it was really busy on a weekend evening--understandable.

So why not 5/5?  Well for starters, we got snubbed that one time when it was busy.  Plus, the guava empanada dessert my wife orders at the Encino location was taken off the menu.

Bottom line:  When you feel like having a big meal and don't mind the strong garlic/onion smell you'll bring home with you, stop by this place and give it a try.  I guarantee you'll love it.

fine. i will be the asshole here and give the low review! i had the garlic chicken which i guess the most popular thing. i found it overcooked, and the sauce was super greasy. the garlic rolls were okay, and you really have to track down the waiters to pay attention to you. probably wouldnt not go here again. the prices were a bit steep too. the bananas were good though.

Food is awesome here.  Get the pork.. it's labeled as #1 on the menu.  Also, the oxtail is good and so is the lamb.  The sauces really make the dish.

Oh, and the bananas.... don't you dare skip on these!  Can't figure out what to do with your beans?  Pour a spoonful on your rice and chomp down on some rice/beans.  It's good.  Trust.

Stop reading Yelp and get over there already.  Oh, parking sucks.  But then again, it's Ventura Blvd.

Holy crap GARLIC!  I've got this thing about not really liking to eat food that makes my mouth taste weird later.   Well, hello, garlic for at least 15 hours or so.  Yes I brushed my teeth like 4 times, but oh man.
Now...besides that...oh how tasty!
From all the recommendations I went with the garlic chicken.  HUGE portion that I barely finished half of.  The plantains were oh my god so good, I could have eaten just a whole plate of those.  Even the rice & beans were yummy.
Talk about fast service!  (which makes me suspicious about the freshness of the food)  We pretty much ordered and the food came about five minutes later.  The service was very good, the waiter was very friendly.  And when I got to excited talking and knocked over my water, a guy rushed over to clean up my mess.
Did I mention cheap!  $30 for way too much food plus one drink each.  Nice!  I would like to go back to try some of the other interesting things on the menu.  I really like that garlic chicken but beware about speaking to anyone too close for the next couple days.

My Hispanic wife loves Cuban food so we ventured here on a Saturday to celebrate her son's 26th Birthday.  We had a party of 6 and had average, friendly service throughout.  I'm not a big Cuban food fan but I tried the garlic shrimp and it was filling and tasty, but VERY salty.  Most of the meals came with black beans and rice, which you have to develop a taste for.  The fried plantains were (I was told by the people in my party) delicious.  However, other dishes that were ordered by my in-laws were not very well received.  They had chicken, steak, and carnitas and all came with a salty, vinegar laced sauce that my wife thought was horrible.

The restaurant decor was colorful but very sparse and the men's restroom was of the Lock the door variety and fairly clean and well stocked.

The service was a bit poor considering the restaurant was not crowded.  We were there between lunch and dinner.  The waiter did not provide refills without asking.  The guava was mediocre.

The garlic bread appetizer was good and the fries were nothing special.  I went there hungry but did not leave with any leftovers, as the portion was not very large.  Our tab for 6 people came to $114, that included the tip.

LOVE LOVE LOVE the food here!! If you are new to cuban food then this should be a place to try out first. I would recommend you to try the ox tail dish. Tender and tasty! Although everytime I've been here the place is extremely busy it doesnt bother me. Service is mediocre. Parking is small as well but at least you can park on the streets.

Vampires stay clear and don't expect to have a make-out session after eating here!

I like the roasted pork plate with the garlic sauce and all the onions on top, except I don't like the onions.  The last time I was there it had more fat in the pork then edible pork, but it sure did taste yummy.

I also got a banana coconut shake and split it with my companion.  It tasted pretty good, but I thought it was too runny.

I should try some other things on the menu, but each time I go back I am craving the garlicky roasted pork and don't get much further than that!

Been coming here for years, and I've see the decor change.  But the food, ahhh, the food...
So, medicine has taught us that garlic is good for you.  Well then, Cubans must be REALLY healthy!  If you're a first timer, might I suggest their specialty - roasted 1/2 chicken with garlic (mojo de ajo) sauce and onions.  Most of their meals come with rice, plantains (maduros) and black beans, so make sure you go on an empty stomach.  Once you've been, you'll be hooked, so for your future visits try the Ropa Vieja (shredded meat stew) or the Bistec de Pollo Empanizado (breaded chicken filet) with a side of the mojo (garlic).  OMG, heaven.
The wait on Friday and Saturday nights is only long because of the amount of people waiting, but the service is fast.   Although the prices have gone up in the last few years, its still fairly reasonable considering the amount of food you get.

Here's a TIP:  don't plan on getting smoochy with your boo after dinner, unless you pack a ton of mints.  Or unless you're both freaky like that!

Excuse me while I wipe the drool off my mouth... jk... =)

This is probably the best place I have ever had Cuban food besides Felix's in Orange (which is also Cuban but different than Versailles.... but ANYWAYS!). Their Garlic chicken is soooooo good! It is very heavy on the garlic and onions, so make sure you like both those flavors or else you will think it is too much! I like eating here on the weekends because during the weekdays it can get busy during lunchtime.

Anyhow, if you get the Garlic Chicken, it comes with rice, plantains and black beans. This entree is huge. I can never finish my food, but I am not complaining... I love me some leftovers =)

What hasn't been said about this Place?....

Sometimes you feel vanilla.Plain bread, some water, no dressing thank you.

Then there are times you want more. You want flavors, bold flavors at that! By goodness yes, add that garlic!  And so a quest begins....

At first I was pondering Italian for my girl Faa and her birthday lunch but then I stumbled across this restaurant in the reviews and I began to have a mad craving for some cuban.  I hoped that Faa would understand the change in plans and she didn't have her mouth ready for pasta because we were heading elsewhere.  Luckily for me as soon as I spoke the word "plantain" her eyes bugged out and she got this big smile on her face - turns out Nigeria (where she is from) is big on plantains.  Sweet.

Arriving at Versailles we found it was pretty plain inside - a large room with many tables, suitable, but not fancy by any means. However, I could see it being a much nicer place for dinner - a nice, dark wood bar and the chandeliers could make for some better ambiance.   Still, the sunlight was pouring in and we were seated right away.   The service was on point - my tea never did get below half way gone, that's how it should be done.  The server was nice and our food came very quickly. So on to that --

The bread that comes out is toasty and garlicy. Mmmmm....but don't fill up on just that, there is some tasty entrees to follow -- on the advice of yelpers I asked Faa if she liked Oxtail - again, the bugged out look and happy smile, turns out Oxtail stew is a fav of hers. She got that and I got the Garlic Chicken plate. Talk about flavor! My chicken was cooked perfectly with this sauce that was so very garlicky and lemony that my tastebuds were most definitely doing the happy dance.  It comes with plantains, beans and rice as well as onions which I don't normally like but in that sauce...mmmm...it's all good.

I wish I had a chance to try the stew, but Faa was munching away like she had found a little slice of heaven, I didn't have the heart to ask for a taste, it was her day after all! Before you knew it we were both full and happy.  The best part?  I was so happy I could make my friend's birthday with food she hadn't had in a long time at a really decent price (for the two of us it was around $30.00)

I will be heading back here often for a tastebuds happy dance.

This is the second Versaille that I've had the pleasure of eating. (The other being in La Cienega and Pico). Compared to the one in Los Angeles, the Encino branch was more impressive. Great service. Great food. If you're indecisive, try the beef combo #12 (Ribeye). My favorite dish. Mmmmm.

After an hour of Thai Massage at Bangkok down the street, we had to take advantage of our vicinity and came to the one place in mind... the mall. Then we went to Versailles, that great Cuban joint I once visited a year prior, with hazy recollection and a must-try-at-least-once-more-attitude to really give it a genuine review.

What can I say, Versailles was hitting on all cylinders. With the advice from fellow yelpers, I ordered the lechon asado and my gf ordered the BBQ chicken. Holy crap, the pork was so tender, smothered with onions and garlic lemon sauce, and seasoned perfectly. The rice was actually cooked perfectly along with the beans and fried plantains. The chicken was big, not dry, and smothered with their BBQ sauce. It was a great Cuban experience and the entree prices were more than reasonable ($10 each). The only thing that I found kinda puzzling was their Cuban soda prices... $3 for a can of Materva, Ironbeer, and Malta. I never paid more than $1.20 so I found this kinda surprising. It's not crystal pepsi for christ sakes. Anyway, we ordered a Materva and enjoyed every sip of it. Overall this place was awesome, I need more reasons to visit this area more often... in fact, this would be my reason.

***Update for 2/11/08
Came back after another massage and had a so-so experience. My lechon asado seemed like it came from the bottom of the barrel with broken scraps of meat and fat; all of which looked like it came from a can of dog food. After 4 bites, the rest was too nasty to eat. My gf's chicken was no better. Dry and unappealing, everything was just off. Perhaps this place is consistently inconsistent much like my first visit.

Oxtail stew!! I only go here for the oxtail stew! However, the other dishes I've had that my friends have ordered have also been very tasty. I did feel that the chicken (thigh + drumstick!) came out a bit dry though. I don't understand how a chicken thigh + drumstick can be cooked in such a way that it makes it dry. -1 star.

Everytime I'm in the Valley, I want to come here to get the oxtail stew. It's excellent! But I'm sure there are other great restaurants I haven't yet experienced. But if you feel like you've experienced all the others, come here to get excellent cuban!

The first time I went to Versailles, I really enjoyed it.  However, after 3 times of visiting this restaurant, I must say that in the end...the food is rather mediocre.

Nevertheless, it may be the location, but this one for sure isn't one of the top Versailles I would recommend.  The best that I had was the one located on sepulveda around the Manhattan beach area.

I ordered the buttered garlic camarones, but when I got it, I was kind of disturbed since they probably melted a whole stick of butter, dumped the shrimp inside, and grounded garlic along with the package that it came in since I found bits and pieces of what looked like plastic...all in a little bowl.  The rice is ok, the plaintains are ok...I mean, I might be wrong about the chicken and all the other meat that they serve...but I would highly recommend that people keep away from their seafood items.

I seriously left the place curious if I was going to poop out a whole plastic bag later on.  Gross I know.  But hey, I'm just being honest.

YEA.  So in essence, I'm definitely not going back to this location.

I don't care what anyone says about this place, I absolutely love it! I've been there a couple of times and each time totally rocked! The fried plantains as some call it is always so juicy and the garlic chicken, succulent. I can't wait for when I move closer to the valley so I can have my fill of Cuban food.

WOW she got a face lift!

Garlic soaked carpets have been replaced with big ceramic tiles.
Mirrored walls have been textured and painted with warm tropical tones.
Acoustic ceilings have been smoothed over, vaulted and adorned with classic wrought iron chandeliers.
Paintings have replaced grease boards.

The menu is the same as before but the bar offering has been expanded to included soju based mojitos.  My favorites menu items are still arroz con pollo and ropa vieja. I also love the guava shells!

All the new make up makes the old girl look a bit more fashionable but the noise level sure went up.  Must be the missing garlic flavored carpet!

I went here once earlier this year with a group of 7 people. This is fortunate for me because I got to try more than one dish that night, which would help me give this restaurant a fair assessment. I tried the house special garlic whole chicken, along with the Columbian style steak, skirt steak, beef stew and my specialty scallop dish.

In all, the food was pretty tasty. The chicken was good as were the steaks and plantains. Very hearty, stuffing and homestyle (I guess). It's not the best Cuban food ever, but the taste was good enough to make the 4 star rating. I guess that's pretty good considering that the restaurant is a franchise now, and that the customer base still contains a good number of Hispanic customers. I recommend this place.

went for lunch -- the food was not amazing.  the agree with what others wrote that the garlic chicken tasted like it'd been re-heated.  the black beans, however, were awesome.

I was in LA for about 3 months and staying in Encino....when I inquired with a friend where I should get my grub on they casually mentioned this cuban place that has garlic chicken.

So I head over to Versailles one day for lunch not even knowing what to expect.

What did I find? The most delicious garlic lemon chicken that has ever touched my lips. The lunch special chicken comes with rice, beans and fries or plantains. The plantains are out of control good (and the whole lunch cost about 7 bucks)

I never got anything else...so sadly I cannot tell you how the other food is...but it all looks greats.

Don't be alarmed when you first walk in and see a large statue of Jesus Christ adorned with candles and flowers.  It's just an indication that you've stumbled upon a Cuban restaurant true to it's culture.

If I could give them a 6th star, I would.

They've recently had a face lift, and have brightened up the place significantly.  The seating here is perfect for large groups, and although they don't take reservations, it doesn't take long to wait for a large table.

I've been to a few Cuban restaurants in the LA area, and this one by far has the best menu selection, best food, and best customer service.  They treat you like family here and always make sure that your glasses are filled to the brim.

TIP:  Although they have valet parking here, it's complimentary, just be sure to tip your valet.

I love Versaille's chicken, plantains, rice and black beans as much as the next poisun.   But, most likely you've already read all about this dish in the other reviews...  Sooo, as not to be redundant... I won't bore you with the details.

This location isn't my favorite although its still very good.  I prefer the Venice locale's food (5 stars) because it just tastes better to me..

Their prices are Really reasonable.

What you probably don't know is this:   If you should decide to get anything "To Go" that has their infamous Garlic - Lemon Sauce slathered on it,  Please, I IMPLORE YOU, it is MANDATORY that YOU ASK THEM to DOUBLE BAG IT or IF you are really Paranoid about your Precious Car, HaVe IT TRIPLE BAGGED.

IF YOU DON"T?
If you don't, and their INDUSTRiALSTRENGth GaRLiC &  LeMoN SaUcE just happens to splash or spill onto your upholstery or carpeting?   Listen Carefully because I'm only gonna tell you once:        IT - WILL -  BE - THERE -  FOR -  LIFE!

Once it has soaked into "whatever", you can "try" all you want to remove that smell but it ain't gonna budge.  I even took it in "twice" to have it professionally cleaned and "no such luck."  Now you may THINK that the smell is gone after having it cleaned...  but just you wait until a Hell Hot Day in Summer hits and badda bing...  it's baaaaack!   You've got yourself one hell of a "Vampire Repellent."

Eventually, I had to give up on forever cleaning my baby Toyota but you better believe it when I tell you, I sold that thing on a cold, crisp day in March.

Naw, I didn't.   Can you say poetic license?

Four hours after lunch and I'm still trying to fully awaken from the carb-and-sangria coma.
They start you off with bread... deliciously soft, crispy buttery and garlicy.  I ordered a hafl pitcher of sangria and some fried yucca, and in no time my table was groaning under the weight of the Cuban Sandwich, the house chicken, and the beans and rice that come as side dishes.
The sangria: not the best I've ever had, but still delicious, hell, it's sangria - cold, fruity and studded with orange wedges.  My Cuban sandwich was out of this world, and the garlic chicken came with the BEST black beans I've ever had...  I've been in a bit of a food rut lately, and the flavors and spices were alive and exciting, just the thing to pull me out of it. As soon as I recover i'll be ready for mas!

I've been coming here for as long as I can remember. Before, the place was dark and unwelcoming. Now that they've remodeled, the restaurant is vibrant and colorful, meaning it's welcoming. The food is delicious and very well-priced. The staff is very friendly as well. I always order the ropa vieja, no beans, extra bananas. I highly recommend it! On weekends however, there's almost always a wait, but stick around and wait for a table, and soon Versailles will become your favorite restaurant.

I've found this location slightly less crowded than their Venice location, which I've certainly gushed enough about:

----

If I owned a private jet, I'd fly down South to have lunch here at least once a week.  Shoot me, it's that good.  It rivals the quality of Cuban restaurants in Miami that I've been to; and for the price, it can't be beat.  The only Cuban restaurant in my book that ever topped this is the now-gone National Cafe in NYC (I sobbed when I discovered them gone).

The real winners are the lechon, rabo, bistek, garlic chicken, platanos.

This is my favorite Cuban food restaurant  ever.     I don't really like rice or black beans but from this restaurant I cant have enough.  They are super super good and there prices are wonderful.    I really miss LA because of this.  Versailles is one of the best restaurants on Ventura BL.

You like garlic?   You like lemon?  You like soft tender meat that's juicy?  You like chicken?   You like beef?

DUDE, THEN TRY THE LECHON ASADO - roasted pork marinated in lemon garlic sauce.

My hubby came home one day with this stuff and I was thinking, ew, smells like ass.  But wow, I took a bite, and once you let that flavour fill your mouth, you'll be pouring the sauce all over the rice and eating all your rice, too.

I don't even like pork that much, and  I thought for the longest time that I was eating pork or chicken.  They roast this stuff that's been SOAKED in sauce overnight to create this miracle.

Plus, they got one of the best plantains here.

5- STAR for this one dish alone because I've never found anything like it anywhere else.  But I'm giving a 4 to be safe, cuz I've never gotten myself to eat anythign besides this dish.

Oh, and my hubs wanted to pitch in that the Mojito here is actually good, even though it's mixed with SOJU.  I've never had it, but he's kind of a mojito connoseur and half alchy, so I'd trust his taste.

"Once you go Lechon Asado, you never go back."
