I came here after my foot massage with my mom and sister, and I didn't think it was too bad. The decor is nice and everything matches. Each individual chair has the Genki Ramen logo on it, and it all flows well. I got the Kimchi Ramen. The noodles were cooked perfectly and the soup was flavorful. The karaage was too salty though. We also ordered the pumpkin and yam tempura. The pumpkin was so good, but the yam was dry. I couldn't even finish the yam. Some of the prices were a little steep from what I saw, but we got the lunch menu so it was cheaper. I would come back especially for the green tea ice cream with red bean paste and whipped cream. That looked really good!
Darn, I was hoping so hard that this place would be good. The ramen was bland, the soup was foggy, the kara age salty, and well, yeah, that is my experience. The takoyaki only had one small piece of squid in each ball, and I'm not really sure if it was cooked thoroughly. *sigh* Not my favorite. update 4/13: got sick the next day =(

Okay Genki. I give you three stars and here's way:
Your food is good, but nothing to write home about....especially for the price. The fried rice type dish I ordered was definitely not worth the $8.95 that we paid for it. While the Robatayaki Specialties were pretty decent, I think you could have given a we bit more food. The Hamachi Kama being the exception. That was indeed pretty nummie. The ramen was okay, but what we ordered was pretty basic, so I have a feeling that was where we went wrong. The service was friendly and quick :)

On a rainy drizzly night, 2 friends ducked in for some late night grub.
I ordered the kimchee ramen while Leap Leap got the chasu.
As we sat, we were given tea (which was good cause it kept my hands warm) and a small plate of pickled cabbage.
So the broth is good n salty, not as thick and msg-y as Santa Ramen of course, but still good. It's decent and passable. Much more flavor than that of Tanpopo.
The noodles though, I wasn't too impressed. They were not quite al dente so they were a bit TOO chewy if you know what I mean. Had that slight undercooked bite to it.
I'm going to have to give this place another shot; however it is a good alternative if I don't feel like driving down to Santa Ramen..

I've got delivery twice from them and I'm pretty content with their food and the execution of the menu.
However, they have one of the stupidest bitches taking orders on the phone or answering the phone all together. Stupid, bad attitude, rude and unpleasant. For that I will never visit the actual location or recommend this place for people to go have dinner.
I'm sticking to Delivery.com to order from here.

Been here four times now - in the past two months. Ramens are solid: noodles just right, broth on the miso-y side rather than overpoweringly soy sauce (it's in there too). Pork slices in the chashumen have good texture and flavor.
The appetizer/small dishes are varied and good: spinach is 'al dente' (hard to do consistently) Tofu salad had a nice mixture of tastes and textures. Potstickers/Gyoza were just alright - nice crunch, too much onion. Kara-age chicken cooked nicely - as someone else said, maybe too much salt.
The robatayaki side dishes could add up to a meal, my favorite was the beef & green onion rolls: usually this dish is soaked in teriyaki sauce; not here, the meat is tender and the sauce is tasty but muted.
On Sunday evenings they definately need an extra server!
Oh how I love ramen!! Genki is a good ramen spot, but it isn't the best. I was in love with Genki the first time I tried it, but after eating it last night, I have to say I wasn't impressed at all. I was actually disappointed. I just returned from WMC in Miami where I ate one meal a day for a week. I was really looking forward to this meal., and I was let down. Although I know this is bad, I am a salt lover. However the ramen is was so salty I almost couldn't eat it. That says something to me. I recommend Genki for when you are hungover, other wise I would definitely try other spots.
It's not Katana-Ya or Santa Ramen. What more do you need to know?
Ok then...the ramen broth was decent but nothing special. However, the noodles were pure crap. Literally, they were Top Ramen noodles. I would not have been surprised if I went to the kitchen or checked the garbage out back and saw a pile of Top Ramen wrappers.
Pros: Decent decor, clean, pretty cheap with an appetizer.
Cons: Everything else.

The decor there was pretty modern and trendy especially with the numerous flat panel TVs on the walls, but that was pretty much the only nice thing about this restaurant.
I'd have to say that the service and decent the first time I was there, but the second time our food took 25 - 30 minutes to come out and there weren't many customers so they weren't short staffed. Not to mention that they kept playing the same Japanese pop (Morning Musume if you know JPOP groups) over and over on those TVs which became quite annoying after the 4th or 5th repeat.
I had their chashu ramen which was decent, nothing special. The noodles tasted like they were pre-packaged and the soup wasn't as hearty as Tanpopo's.
All in all, it's a decent place if you prefer decor more than taste.
The first time I went here, I used the bathroom, and I told the waitress that it was the nicest bathroom I'd ever seen in a restaurant, and I think it's true.
The food is good, and it looks cute. They have J Pop Videos in the background, beautifully displaying teen sexuality. Really cool, I'm so happy Genki is expanding.

Ordered delivery from here a few nights ago since they're a new addition to delivery.com and was I ever disappointed that I did. I am by far NOT a picky eater, but I had to throw most of the food away it was so nasty. The fried tofo was cold, mushy, and horribly flavored, the takoyaki was a greasy soggy deep fried mess (yes, they deep fry the takoyaki), and the "spicy yakisoba" was edible, but nothing worth getting again for sure. I'll give them credit for being really fast on the delivery and giving you a little tote bag with your order, but the fastest delivery in the world is no good if the food they bring you isn't edible.

not too bad. i wish they had udon, though. minimal selection, but still good soup. i ordered agedashi tofu and it was really small. =( but what i am happy about is that they have yam & pumpkin tempura appetizer! like 4pieces of each- my favorite!
i like how they open late of fridays and saturdays!
Found out about this place when I saw their menu at Genki Crepes. I was really excited about trying it out.
Came w/ 4 friends on a Sunday night. Decor was trendy and nice but we waited forever to get our tea and for them to take our order. The waitress was lifeless and dull.
We all shared a yakisoba, which I thought was kind of yummy (probably b/c I've never had it before and am ignorant of what it's supposed to taste like). The meat appetizer we got was not very good, but not so bad that it seared itself in my memory--what was it that we ordered? Tonkatsu, maybe? Can't remember.
Got the seafood ramen (yes, sort of risky to order in the first place I'll admit). Soup was bland, and the mussels, shrimp, scallops and squid were tasteless. The best part of it was the corn. How sad.
So disappointing. =( The menu looked so promising...
I'm a 6'2 215lbs young japanese american male that lives for ramen. A night after a 200 dollar bar tab and a mild hangover calls for either a burrito from santa cruz or ramen.
Everytime I took a bite, a slurp, a taste, a sniff, a lick, a swallow, a breathe, a look, all I could think to myself was WHY DIDN'T YOUR LAZY ASS MAKE AN EFFORT TO GO TO HIMAWARI OR SANTA RAMEN????
Noodles, nice smell to the noodles, but lacked chewyness. Chashu lacked fattyness and was dry, egg was ok, too much green onions, bamboo was ok, but the most important part to ramen, the soup was horrible. I'm generally a nice guy, but Genki ramen should seriously reconsider the ingredients and preparation of their tonkotsu soup base. It was bland and the carelessness was obvious from the intial taste of tonkotsu which faded within seconds from my palate.
I must go satiate my ramen craving next weekend at santa or himawari.

The ramen here is okay. It is not great, not good, just plain okay. If I craved for ramen, I would not be coming here if I had a choice. The reason why I say that is that the one thing it does have going for them as far as I am concerned is their location. They are super close to where I spend most of my time...at work!
Service is okay. The decor is cool. But at the end of the day, my first sentence is all that really matters....the ramen here is okay.
There are not a lot of choices as far as the ramen goes. I think I was more distracted with all the plasmas. Half the tv's were of Japanese pop music videos and the other half was the Warriors game (which I prefer!). I had three different ramens and I must say I am not going to order the seafood anymore, it was COLD.
Of course, I am comparing this to the dozens of ramen places I have tried in South California so maybe I shouldn't be so harsh. Bonuses are the pretty girly drinks they have and it opens much later than the ramen houses in Japantown

The bathroom here is indeed very nice and zen.
I had the Chasu Ramen - noodle soup with house made boiled pork served with half boiled egg, bamboo shoot and green onion.
The BF had the Curry Tonkatsu Ramen - noodle soup with deep fried pork chop coated with curry sauce.
The decor was very stylish and hip, with flat screen tvs.
The food wasn't bad, the service was okay.
You must like to eat chinese food if you eat here, because that is what it is. Chinese food wearing a kimono.
The food here is so terrible I almost asked for my money back. Its kind of like sushi rock, nice ambiance, cute enough servers, but soul less cookie cutter chinese food dressed to look japanese.
Save your money !
Good (not incredible, but really good) giant bowls of ramen, good skewers, good yakisoba, good beer on tap. Okonomiyaki not so good.

NUMMY: I had just returned home from the gym and after a 1.25 mi. run, a 1 hour TRX class focusing on chest and quads, and 30 min. on the StairMaster, I was starving. I planned on cooking but with my kitchen sink broken until the next morning, I opted to order some Japanese food rather than try to make stuffed crab and sauteed kale. If I'm going to eat a meal outside of my home, my number one priority: dine out somewhere you have never eaten. Hence, I had some food delivered from Genki Ramen (GR) via eat24hours.com. The restaurant has a 15 dollar minimum charge for delivery. Boo! However, after selecting what I wanted from the menu, my total was 16 bucks and some change. Not having to order tomorrow's lunch in order to make the delivery minimum: PRICELESS! Delivery ETA: 30 minutes to an hour. Should I have a spoonful of soy peanut butter and jam while I wait - my stomach is giving my liver the hungry eye. Thank god for my friend Sahar who entertained me until delivery guy rang my door bell in what felt like less than 30 minutes: FABULOUS! When I go to the door the guy held a cute little reusable GR bag that stated "Got Ramen?" I signed for the bill and held my hands out expecting him to unload the food in my waiting hands. When he handed me the reusable bag with my dinner and walked away I was already having premonitions of my future trips to Trader Joe's with my "Got Ramen?" bag.
Dinner is Served! (with subtitles):
wakame salad (seasoned seaweed salad): not much to botch up here - seaweed and seasonings. It wasn't the best seaweed salad I've ever had, but I can't even name the best seaweed salad I've ever had and I've had a lot of seaweed salad. The seaweed was good. I added some amino acids (great soy sauce substitute - see Rainbow Grocer) and red chili flakes to the salad - SO NECESSARY! NUMMY!
unagi tempura (deep fried sea eel in tempura batter, served with tempura sauce) My second priority after finding a restaurant that I have never dined at: try any thing on the menu I have never had in my dining experiences. I love2love unagi, but I've never had unagi tempura. The unagi tempura was a bit fishy in taste like fried oysters and I assumed they would barbecue the eel before tempura-ing it. I assumed wrong. However, with the tempura sauce and a squeeze of the accompanying lemon wedge: NUMMY!
Grilled Onigiri (charcoal grilled sea-eel rice ball): I **heart** rice balls! (Shut it and get my mind outta the gutter!) Cooking the rice ball on charcoal grill rather than the traditional way (steaming), was inventive. I actually thought the rice ball was burned until I took a bite, followed by 4 -5 consecutive bites that did a David Blaine on the rice ball in less than 5 minutes. After the first bite the rice ball fell apart and the eel came tumbling out, so some one at GR needs to re-enroll in rice ball 101. Despite the aforementioned, the rice ball was bomb and the sweet and salty sauce the rice was soaked in gave the whole rice ball a wonderful flavor that accented its charcoal preparation.
GR - I got your ramen! Their definitely on my do over list. I have to try the Ox tongue!

It was a cold and stormy night. I had the worst craving for Ramen so I put my pants on and walked over to Genki in the torrential rain. You know a craving has to be really bad for me to put my pants on after I have already taken them off for the evening.
Had it not been for Nobo's review I would not have come here since it has an overall 3 star rating but since I trust his taste I wrote down his specific recommendations and ordered exactly as he said; Gyoza and Chashu Ramen. The Gyoza was great, large pieces, perfectly crisp on one side and flavorful.
The Ramen; the soup was velvety smooth and hit he spot, that one Ramen soup spot but the Ramen itself......was that Ramen or whole wheat angel hair pasta done al dente? Now I ain't no Ramen aficionado, I'm just a dumb American, but this Ramen was so disppointing. I wanted that tender, silky, starchy, curly noodle and this just made me feel like the kid whose ice cream falls off the cone upon the first lick. I had an internal temper tantrum like the ones you have at age 3.
The service was mechanical but very efficient. There are 5 large televisions mounted on the wall, all but one played the basketball game. The one I sat directly in front of played a loop of a music video over and over of very young girls lip syncing to some muted song,. They lip synced in a field of flowers, in a coffee shop, on the busy street, on a bridge overlooking a pastoral scene, wearing various cute outfits. Had I been drinking it would have been far more entertaining.
Anyway, I will defiantly be back since they are open very late on weekends and I'm looking forward to trying the grilled meats and the yam tempura but as for Ramen goes, I will cry a little and pass on it next time.

The ramen here is not good. That's all that matters.
The decor and service and location and hours are all nice and such, but that's just packaging as far as I'm concerned. The product is lacking.
Went here over the weekend and got the tempura ramen. First alarm goes off upon realization that there isn't a choice of bases (i.e. shoyu, miso, salt, etc.). Second alarm went off when I got my order.
The broth was bland at best. I dumped in a LOT of the chili pepper stuff. The noodles were as another reader said, much like instant noodles you eat in college. I've made better ramen from the fresh packets at Nijiya Market.
The tempura was so overfried that none of us finished our portions.
The place looks pretty new. I hadn't seen it before or heard much, so maybe they have some kinks to work out and they'll get better. If they ever got around to serving good Ramen, it'd do pretty well especially with a much better decor and service level than other places.
Unfortunately, given that my primary concern with a ramen restaurant is the ramen, I don't see myself going back anytime soon if at all.
A new find for me, simple and tasty food and fast delivery. we were licking our fingers. most of all, you can order online from them!! they have a menu on my new food finder www.eat24hours.com
NOTE: There really is Useful further down (paragraphs II - IV)
On my way to Genki, I got into a car accident. It wasn't my fault: even though I knew Genki had okonomiyaki, I wasn't driving recklessly in a hurry to get there. I was simply stopped behind a VW bus at a stop sign, when the driver decided to throw it in reverse to drive backwards down the street. Right into the front of my car. No serious damage, but a delay nonetheless. How dare someone come between me and my okonomiyaki? Now on to the useful...
Okonomiyaki. Decent okonomiyaki, I'd say. Based on the mixed seafood okonomiyaki, I wouldn't quite say good: although the pancake itself tasted good, the texture and taste of the pancake was far overwhelmed by the sheer quantity of squid in the mixed seafood... other than that, the balance of ingredients and okonomi sauce/mayo/bonito on top was pretty good. I'm hoping it was just the seafood okonomiyaki that suffers from this fatal flaw, so I do plan on returning in the near future to try the bacon and cheese okonomiyaki.
WAIT. WHAT?
Yes, I said BACON and CHEESE OKONOMIYAKI. Now this is how okonomiyaki should be... the ability to add ingredients at your whim is the hallmark of a good okonomiyaki-ya. These few (but still random) available toppings, I suppose, makes Genki a decent (but not quite a good) okonomiyaki-ya.
The other stuff: decor could perhaps be described as 'sleek.' The service was okay, not spectacular, but no problems.
Although I'd try the ramen, I have a feeling that I'd end up reverting to the okonomiyaki section of the menu every time. Two and a half stars for quality and price; one extra half-star because they're open later than (but also more expensive than) Mifune Don.
Sadly, though, Genki's okonomiyaki isn't good enough to warrant getting in another car accident. If you're coming from downtown, nor is it good enough to pass by Mifune Don in Japantown and head to the Inner Richmond. But if it's closer, it's not bad. And they have bacon. I'll leave it up to you to make the decision.

Not my best ramen experience...the decor is trendy--lots of nice wood and stone, mixed in with huge flat screen TVs in all directions. The food was okay--nothing to write home about but not bad. The noodles were all right, the fixins were fine, but the broth was really lacking in depth. This place is no Santa. The service, though, was really not good. The poor waitress was handling about 10 tables on her own and was really swamped. We could see two guys in the kitchen but neither ever helped her out. Our food came fairly quickly, but that was the last we saw of the waitress. No refills on tea, no checking to make sure things were fine, and we had to practically grab her to ask for the check (which it took 10 more minutes to get). The goofy antics on Japanese TV were fun at first, but as we waited longer and longer to pay they just became annoying. I'd pass this one up.
My friend works here in the kitchen . This place doesn't only serve ramen . They serve other stuff as well ! Their Blue Night drink was pretty good . The chicken kaarage tastes just like popcorn chicken . It was pretty good but I'm not a big fan of deep fried food . The ramen noodles are good too . I expected it to be the type of ramen you buy at the supermarket but it's not . I fogot what those noodles are called but they sell for pretty cheap . I'll tell you all when I find out . They have an interesting special menu too which they only have after 10pm . The Beef n Enoki Roll was pretty good and interesting . Very creative of them to come up with that . For all you that don't know what it is , it's kimchi and mushroom wrapped in sliced beef with spicy miso sauce . Even though I found it tasty , it was also very very very salty !! It's as if they spilled 10 spoons of salt in it . The spicy mussel was good too but same problem . It was ridicously salty !! The strawberry smoothie wasn't that good . The chocolate fondue was just a rip off to me . It's just a small bowl of melted chocolate with a small lit candle underneath . They give you like one banana cut in pieces , three strawberries cut in halves , one kiwi cut in pieces , and a few big marshmallows . The best of the four was the banana dipped in chocolate . Then comes the kiwi , then the strawberry . The marshmallow dipped in chocolate was just not good . I find it a rip off because I could've done that at home for much cheaper but instead it cost me $8.50 . I could just melt chocolate in a pot and dip fruits in it . Basically what I'm saying is stick with their ramen and specialty cocktails .
The ramen here was unsatisfying and too expensive for what it was. Had the seafood ramen and everything tasted bland. They charge a lot b/cuz they've decked the place out with plasmas and a nice looking bar. Skip this one.

Not bad. I like their TONKOTSU-based soup. It's a bit pricey, tho.
My friend got a "rotten" egg one time. It was a surprise. I think other customers had bad eggs too because we saw others not eating those eggs!!! Also my friend got a very lukewarm soup. I mentioned in the other reviews, but noodle soup should be hot. I don't mind lukewarm one but this place was a bit too much...
Despite all I said earlier, I like their noodle soup. I like their noodle.

one of the better incidents where 11 bucks of mine has gone a long, long way. the restaurant, first of all, is clean, chic, modern-zen ambient and pleasant to be in. the j-pop videos on the HD screens provide the perfect amount of noise, so that you're not just sitting in awkward silence, but can still carry a robust conversation without getting too distracted.
the food is delicious, moderately priced, and gargantuanly portioned, particularly the ramen bowls. they also serve beer by the pitcher at a very reasonable price, which is a huge plus. the waiting staff is courteous, friendly, timely-mannered and will recommend favorites at the drop of a hat.
and like most people who have reviewed this place, the bathroom is almost worth the visit alone, as it is one of the nicest places i have ever taken a shit in; i was disappointed when they did not have silk toilet paper.

Mmmmmmm. Imagine slurping tasty ramen while sitting in a West Elm catalog. I am shocked it isn't rated higher, but if it keeps the lines down, I am all for it. I am dying to try their okonomiyaki -- haven't seen it on a lot of local japanese menus. They also carry a lot of Korean-Japanese fusion dishes that look interesting.
This place gets the job done. We're not talking about amazing-blow-the-top-of-your-head-great ramen here but hey, it's a nice place to hang out with friends. The dependable dinner is what I like to call meals here.
While I was waiting on some work to be completed at Cheap Pete's I found myself with some time to kill, and a jones for some noodles. Walking down Geary I spotted "genki" and "ramen' together on the same sign. I vaguely remember seeing this place on a Talk thread, but couldn't remember if it was thumbs up or down, so I just threw caution to the wind and sat down for a bowl of noodles.
The food was really not to my tastes, 1 or 2 stars. My heart was racing from the MSG. Even Tanpopo http://www.yelp.com/bi... does better. In their favor, the place is clean, has an idiot proof (large photo) menu, and is open late night (plus lots of drinks and drunk foods). Service was also very nice (but there were only two tables).
Tip: The most Japanese thing about this place was "Hey Hey Hey:Music Champ" on the the large LCD TV.

This place has delicious ramen!!!! The mabo tofu ramen is nice and spicy, prepare to sweat! If you order the side of chicken for a dollar more and place it in the ramen, let it soak then eat it..it's AMAZING!!!!!
The decor of the place is modern and chic. I like it. The bathroom is also nice and clean, that's a plus!
They serve you hot tea, and are friendly and attentive.
I like going to this place for ramen!
First off all I'm not too fond of places that advertise if their food is good in the name. "Genki" translation means fine, well, good. If you have to point out you're good in the first place it makes me think. The only exception is Genki Crepes because they are actually good. But Genki Ramen not so much. I'd rather go somewhere else in Japantown to get some good ramen, okonomiyaki and anything else. The decor is trendy with their plasmas but that doesn't distract me enough not to notice that the food is not up to par.

About a week ago, I went to see Beowulf in IMAX 3D. This was an awesome way to see the movie. ("I am ripper, tearer, slasher...I am BEOWULF!") After two hours of digital violence, lust, and glory, what should every red blooded Man do to follow it up? What meal screams manhood and strength? Noodles. I should have just gone flower picking instead because that was more masculine than eating noodles.
Anyway, I can only blame myself for demeaning my masculinity by visiting Genki Ramen after "Beowulf." Seriously though. Can you imagine Achilles eating noodles? How about Hercules? Maybe King Leonidas? Nope, nope, and nope. In a vain attempt to reclaim some of my broken masculinity, I ordered the seafood yakusoba. Those are fried noodles served on a hot skillet. Fried = Real Man. Skillet = Real Man. It was excellent, and it came in a Hungry Man sized portion. We also ordered the fried appetizer. Not tempura mind you...FRIED. When Genki says fried on the menu, they mean FRIED. Like as in keep your nitro glycerin tablets close by level fried. Also excellent.
What I really do not like about Genki is that the actual restaurant looks like a video game. Way too colorful and loaded with flat panel televisions. The ladeez all know that we dudes are going to look at the shiny screen no matter what. It was like the display wall at Best Buy. Genki needs to tone it down.

Good place to go on a cold winter's night when you're feeling sick. Their spicy mapo tofu broth made me feel tads better.
Open late, especially on Fridays and Saturdays so infinitely better choice to come here for late night snacks then Mel's.
Genki Ramen is the best ramen I've ever had. Admittedly, I haven't gone to Japan nor do I order it at nice Japanese restaurants, so I don't' have much of a comparison point. I love that the soup base is clean and simple tasting. If I order the chicken karaage or tempura ramen, I ask to have it on the side (so to not taint the flavor of the soup), and the staff don't look at my funny for my strange request. The bowl of ramen is plenty to get me full for lunch or dinner. The venue is sorta ill lit, so it lends itself more to an evening or late night eatery, but it's clean and service is quick.

I thought the ramen was pretty good here. Their prices are a little higher than I would like but it's pretty much in line with most noodle houses that try to look "modern".
But for the price, they give you pretty much. The bowl is a little misleading. It looks like there isn't as much as they give you but once you get to the bottom of the bowl, you will probably be pretty stuffed.
And the broth they make is pretty thick and really tasty.
FRIDAYS AND SATURDAYS: Open Until 1am
Ramen is good....other noodle and rice plates are good too.
A cute little place...very worth trying.
Pretty good if you're desperate for ramen and can't get out of the city.
Do yourself a favor and drive down to Santa Ramen. You won't regret it. Get a side of stewed pork if you can get there before they're sold out.
