(At the risk of repeating myself on other locations - please don't be mad- just trying to warn the public) - You can chalk this negative review up to "weirdo" since I am sure I'm the only Californian who also doesn't like Avocado. But, if I get one more "come and celebrate my (birthday) (anniversary) (colonic)" invitation to this place, I'm going to puke.  It's loud (and I normally like loud), busy (and I normally like busy), overpriced (and I normally am not frugal), and just plain average food (and I normally love Italian food).  I really don't understand why people like this restaurant (or any of their locations).  In fact, I think the only thing I like about the place is the cheesy decor.  I think I got to sit in the "Pope" room at the Santa Monica location once.  I'd say, spend you money elsewhere like the Grove's family style Italian restaurant - Maggiliano's (or whatever it's called).  The food is better there.

Mmmmmmm Mango Berry Martini.

I eat here every once in a while when I crave this drink. They're having their 15th anniversary so a bunch of stuff is cheaper than usual.

I split the Caesar Salad and the Linguini Frutti di Mare. The Caesar had way too much dressing but was good. The Linguini was also really good but could've used some extra calamari.

It's not bad for a chain restaurant. Much better than Olive Garden.

The service was minimal, but my server was doubling as the bartender so that's not her fault, especially at 8pm!

Buca Di Belcho.

Are you a broke-ass college student?
Do you have a family of 9 hungry wolves?

This is your place.  The portions here are so unbelievably big that an American would even say that they are massive.  That's saying a lot, people.

The food is so-so and you will definitely have leftovers to take home with you.  Seriously.  Thinking of getting something light like a salad?  Great idea of you want to eat 2 acres of spinach!

This is a great place to go with big groups if you want to pay only on one check.

Don't half step.  Order something that will taste good as leftovers.

Came here Monday night with a friend and had a rather pleasant experience... the waitress errr server was later to be found out her first day serving and she did an EXCELLENT job at it! I can't remember her name for the life of me but she was a host for a while...

At any rate got seated in the rear room and it was completely empty when we arrived! YAY and a First for this place!

We ordered off the Mio (single serving) menu and had the lemon chicken and salad.. The Lemon Chicken was DELIS!!@ Cooked so well it was cut with a fork and the pasta was done perfectly!
The sald was good however could have been  a bit more fresh (in the sense it seemed too seasoned)
The service was quick and efficent... well it was our server's only customer until near the end...

Will I be back .. if someone else is driving.. Living in Hollywood and going to SM for dinner is very far and with gas  I would stick to walking to Maceli's down my street which has less of a chain atmosphere

This Italian-themed chain restaurant was actually pretty darn good.  Beats the Olive Garden, Johnny Carino's, or any of those other craptastic places.  They weren't perfect, but they met all the Italian-themed demands.  Everything on the menu is big, full of carbs, meat and cheese.  The staff were nice and courteous.  Food wasn't fast, but it didn't take long.

If you want to save money, split a "small" order with someone and your dinner will be about $10.  Perfectly reasonable.

The menu is heavy on the Sicilian influenced Italian-American food of the East Coast, so you won't find light dishes, California Fusion, or "authentic" Italian food.  Again, met all my requirements for them.

Even though Buca is a chain I still think they deserve some credit for what they do. I mean, the place lets you walk through the kitchen before getting to your table and still manages an A on its health inspection.

Food: My favorites here are anything prepared in the parmigian style (eggplant or chicken) and the macaroni rosa. The macaroni comes with a pink sauce (alfredo + tomato), curly hollow pasta (macaroni), broccoli, and some peas. Sounds simple, right? Well, it is, but it's damn delicious. The pizza here is kind of crappy though. Everything is served family style so you can get huge plates and share. This is especially useful for catering as you don't really have to worry about portion sizes. Also, most of the desserts here are worth trying.

Atmosphere: Where else can you go to stare at a bust of the Pope or images of a young, lithe Sophia Loren? Buca tries very hard to be unique in its decorations and definitely succeeds. I must say that it is a little discomforting to have a religious figure stare you down as you soil your face with red sauce.

Service: Can be slow, but they're used to having huge parties. I came here for graduation and there was no problem squeezing my family and friends into one of the rooms.

Parking: There are tons of garages around 2nd street owned by the city (I think). They have a 2 hour free period and then start charging a steep rate after that. It maxes out at $7, I think.

Synopsis: Not sure how authentic this place is, but my stomach seems to think highly of their food, so I have to agree.

The feeling and food is just similar to any Buca branch I ever been to...
The usual large portions (I really like the way they make the fried calamari) , polite servers and black & white portraits..

The pasta isnt really anything to be impressed about, at least its not instant ramen and ketchup... Come to think of it, instant ramen noodles are more tasty than ordinary spaghetti noodles....

Sadly no parking (park in the building in front) and they dont validate parking...

Ok um ... the people that actually gave this place a review as if they really expected more than they received seriously surprise me.  So you knowingly went to BDB and were disappointed? I ... I .. I just d-don't get it.

You mean you didn't expect to see 6 200-lb adults stuffed in a booth gorging themselves on pasta and pizza?  You expected the pasta to be delicious and tasty?  Like ... um ... where do you live again?

OK - it was random, but yes we went. Uh our waitress was a peach, real sweet girl, could actually upgrade restaurant jobs, great service.  The pasta was gross but surprisingly the pizza was really good. It's just the way I like it.  And the hot rosemary bread was really good.  The waitress' only downfall is that she told us a small size feeds 2 people when really she should have said 2 REALLY FUCKING FAT people or 4 people our size.

Oh well.

During my brief experience at Buca, I found myself assisting in a delightfully uncoordinated and off-key chorus (several waiters and most of the diners in the room) delivering five enthusiastic performances of: "Happy Birthday" - to five different parties, all of whom were celebrating in large happy groups.  I almost lied to say it was my friend's birthday so that our table wouldn't be the only one in the room *not* celebrating.

Family style means you get one large-size dish and share it with 2-4 other people.  The portions are enormous if you plan on eating an entire plate yourself.

The atmosphere here is warm and comfortable.  The waiters are relaxed, fun, and enthusiastic.

This is certainly not a place for a date, unless you are very comfortable with the person - but for a large group, or a birthday party - it is perfect.

The food is good, but it's nothing special.  The unexciting menu and severely average quality is the main reason I gave only 3 stars.

Be sure to ask about the "Kitchen Table" if you are making reservations.

I'm a little ashamed that I ate here given the sheer volume of awesome restos in the SM area, but hey, it was my friend's bday and he picked this place!  Anyways....

It's great for large groups b/c of their enormous portions and simple uncomplicated food.  Like Radiohead said "no alarms and no surprises."  Sometimes innovation and creativity is not a priority.  Sure the food is prob worse than the olive garden, but when you're in a large group, all you care about is being able to enjoy the company and servers that dont suck.

We got a private room with the pope and a gigantic bottle of wine and could be loud and obnoxious and it was perfect for that.  Also, the staff aren't all anal about seating you before your entire party arrives which was nice.

We had tons of food and just enough wine and it came out to $30pp between 15 people.

So the prices are good and the servings are enormous! The quality of the food is mediocre though. I ordered the fettuccine Alfredo. I have heard that you can judge the quality of an Italian restaurant by their Alfredo... if this is true than this place only deserves one or two stars. I gave an extra star for the garlic bread and great service.  Don't bother unless you have a large group... that's what it's geared toward.

Buca Di Beppo received a unanimous vote of approval from ThursdayLunch.com members.  I'm not sure why we hadn't gone there before, but we will surely be back.

We ordered a number of large and small dishes and pizza for the big party, everybody had plenty of food and we got away for under $15 each including tax+tip.

I enjoyed everything, but was particularly fond of the sausage and mushroom pizza and the lasagna.

Interesting... but four stars are enough for this joint.
At least for me, four.

I took a bunch of teenage girls down here when we were wandering around Santa Monica. First thing I was wondering about this place was why it would take them more than five minutes to seat six people when the restaurant wasn't even halfway full. Well, I guess that could happen. Next!

Actually the waitress was very considerate on how we should order. I really appreciated that cuz teenage girls really don't eat much. We ordered chopped salad which was a fantastic opener for our meal, and their garlic bread in a deep dish kinda pan was really nice. We ordered a spicy seafood pasta that I forgot the name of, and that was also everyone's favorite. I personally thought their ravioli was ok since the sauce was ok, although the pasta part was kinda rubberish. The girls didn't really enjoy them.

The pizza was where I take off one more point. It was supposed to be a pizza with sausages and pepperoni. When I  took a bite out of it I could sense blue cheese or some sort. Blue cheese? that was very unusual. The whole combination of blue cheese and sausages and pepperoni was just not right. just not right. none of the girls finished it.

I don't really know if I want to go back. May be when I need to feed a large group at a cheaper price then usual, I will think about it. but I will make sure I would never order their ravioli or pizza.

I can't help but love a family style restaurant. We went there with 6 people one night. One was vegetarian, one was allergic to gluten, and somehow we all had an easy time finding food for everyone to share. Best of all, when it comes time to pay the bill, everyone just splits evenly. Perfect.

I am rubbing my eyes right now. Ok, couple of four-star reviews, one five-star. I rubbed my eyes again. Yep. Still the same count...

Today, after an afternoon of shopping at 3rd Street, I said to my lovely wife "Say...why don't we just dine in Santa Monica?"

We strolled under the sunsetting skies, enjoying the warmth of the summer, and the buzzing streets filled with shoppers, lovers, kids and tourists. And mama mia, we found Buca Di Peppo.

We were sat at a table fairly quickly. Server was polite and attentive. We looked at the menu and ordered calamari (small) and Fettuccine Supremo (small). The calamari came with tentacles and we love it. But the Fettuccine was....well, just an insult to our taste buds.

Ok...one thing I do recall is that this is not fine Italian dining and we ordered the food that mind. All we just wanted was something fun and hearty and filling. The decoration was interesting. Then and there we placed our appetite on the betting table.

Sure the Fettuccine Supremo can feed an army but where were the greens (broccoli), reds (bell pepper) and the carcass (chicken breasts)? Not to mention the gravy was so starchy that they stuck to my teeth, gums and side cheeks. I bet this joint just bought over Argo & Kingsford's. Don't get me started on the cheese. The dish is so cheezy that it makes BayWatch Cheez-O-Hasselhoff . (once filmed on the San Mo beaches) look plain and dull. Oh how about this...the dish is so repelling that it actually made Olive Garden's dishes look a little better. And we hate OG just as deep...

We ate two or three mouthfuls of Fettuccine Supreyuck, and we asked for the check right away. We paid $30 something dollars and we left right away.

Buca Di Crappo wasted our time like some cheap magazine. What a rip.

I ate at Buca for the first time and was sorely disappointed.  Perhaps, the homey (at times claustrophobic) interior design chock full of photos and other vintage knick knacks gave me false expectations.  I was lured into thinking that maybe the food is like what Marie from Everybody Loves Raymond comedy would serve.  Homestyle Italian favorites in huge portions.

We ordered calamari and it was decent.  Somehat soggy but okay.  We decided to order the Fettucine Supremo to share.  Worst dish ever.  I took two bites and trieddeperately to salvage my man's increasingly bad mood.  'Honey, it's not that bad...'

There were barely any brocoli or bell peppers.  The few pathetic chicken pieces were in big chunks.  The sauce was so startchy, I could taste the flour used in thickening.  Don't get me wrong.  I love Italian food and know what goes into a real alfredo sauce.  I also love my carbs and will eat pasta daily if possible.

I could have just cooked a better dish at home.  I mean, I'm not expecting fine dining just decent food.  Needless to say, we are not coming back to Buca.  Sure, it's homey and all that but the quality of food is just plain bad.  We heard a few chorus of Happy Birthday so  Buca's good for a cheap large group celebration.  Maybe if we had drank some alcohol, we wouldn't have noticed the lousy food.

We gave the leftovers to a homeless guy and headed straight to Mitsuwa, Japanese supernarket for some good beef.  Marinated it for grilling shabu style.  Buca was so bad that we decided to stray as far as possible from Italian food until our tastebuds have sufficently recovered.

I waver between 3 & 4 stars because of the taste of some of the items. The Spicy Arrabbiata Pizza is one of the best ever made. It's thin crust with pepperoni, sausage & onions on it. It is so tasty. Yet, some pastas like the spaghetti have something to be desired. I think it's all about what you get here. The portions are big and it only makes sense to go here with a group. I would give it a 3, but the pizza I mentioned bumps the place up a whole star. Yes, it's that good...

I like Buca Di Beppo. I think the atmosphere's kind of fun. I like the family style servings. I like the food. Maybe it was circumstance, but my experience at this location was poor. Poor.
I'll get the good stuff out of the way. The food was tasty. The sub-waiter (busser?) was a cool dude and joked with my party. We all (5) left satiated.
Before I go into my angry account, I must admit that we had some reservation issues that were my fault. Our reservations were originally for 8:30. I changed them to 9. One person showed up around 9 and we finally all arrived at 9:15. Yeah, kind of crappy of us.
The hostess was crappy. She had this attitude like "Oh, are you ready NOW?" didn't greet us didn't smile didn't make us feel welcome at all.
The waiter was a real dickfor. I asked a few questions about the meals and qualifications for a certificate I'd brought. He acted as if he knew all the answers but was really not excited about telling me them.
"Can I make a Buca Mio plate from any of the entrees or are there only specific plates available?"  Dickfor answer: "Um, that's the Buca Mio menu."
What the hell does that mean?
"Can you recommend a vegetable-centered dish that has lots of veggies?" Dickfor answer: "Nothing is vegetable-centered here, man"
Things like that confused me and made ordering a chore. Plus this dude had an attitude like he really didn't want to answer my questions. Oh, and he had a ponytail. Dickfor.
The same dickfor said that we didn't get any bread with our meals. I've been to Buca Di Beppo before. Most restaurants, too, serve bread. You get bread. I looked at other tables. They had bread. He told me it was a la carte. Thankfully, the sub-waiter (busser?) brought us bread.
Okay, so that's just a couple of turds in an otherwise good sausage stew. But then I got pissed again.
After we had our meals and were feeling better about everything, mostly, it was time to pay up. Sweet! I had my certificate for one free Buca Mio plate (for one), which we devoured. The condition was that we buy an entree of equal or greater value. Perfect. We'd ordered two small (for two) servings. This would fall under the "greater value" category.
Ah. But "sorry, sir, our manager says we can't honor this certificate because it says it's valid only if you buy a Buca Mio plate of equal or greater value. You didn't order a Buca Mio plate."
It's true. I read the certificate. They got me. Crap.
Wait a minute. Are you telling me you're willing to let me "buy 1 get 1 free" but not "buy 4 get one free"? Clearly, this Buca Di Beppo likes fine print and not its customers.
And here's the thing: yeah, we kind of messed up our reservation. But there was an ENTIRE SECTION that was open, not to mention tables near us. Not a big deal. Be nice to your damn customers.
I like Buca Di Beppo. I don't like this location. I crap on your ponytail, Santa Monica Buca Di Beppo.

Ya know, I really didn't have high expectations for this spot.  I don't expect these theme-y family Italian restaurants to really offer anything good in terms of food.  When it came down to it, I thought these guys really delivered in terms of tasty morsels (and enormous portions).  The spicy sausage and mushroom pizza was quite good, as was the salmon in pesto and tortellini.  The amibance isn't really my thing... but all in all, it's a good spot to go with a group and consume heaping piles of "Italian" food.

I can't believe it.  I'm giving a chain 5 stars.  I've been here before and it's pretty good as with the other locations.  But last Friday night, almost 60 of us gathered here for a wedding rehearsal dinner.

The waiters were on top of it!  All the food was served in a timely manner (and we had lots of it- calamari, salad, cheese manicotti, chicken parm, chicken pasta and tiramisu).  All of it was very good-- piping hot and I was amazed the calamari was actually still tender.

The crazy wedding couple also told us to get all the drinks we wanted.  You bet I sent my main waiter, Wes, running to the bar often.  I tried the  lemon basil mojito which was pretty good but the next one wasn't. I could tell it was a different bartender.  Then I had the ultimate raspberry lemon drop which was pretty good. I also tried the mango martini which was so-so.  I was getting increasingly fussy about my drinks.  I got the limoncello which they couldn't mess up.  Wes gave me the coffee drink with lots of alcohol in it even though I didn't order it.  He said I'd probably get there eventually (yes, I was taking a tour of the drink menu).  But I had enough, can they do a good vodka tonic which is my  measure of a good bar?  Sadly no.  Wes was so concerned.  "What can I do to make it better?"  I told him I was just a picky alcoholic.  He said I wasn't picky.  That's true, I'm just an alcoholic.  I drank all the drinks!

So, thumb's up on Buca and especially our great waiter.

I was apalled when the Chicken Cacciotore was removed from the menu.  It was the MAN saying we can charge our patrons for the succulent chicken and the "like butta" garlic mashed potatoes seperately.  So, typically I tend to boycott this place.  Fortunately, on their website, they list their daily specials and every so often my favorite entree featured.  So I'll go and that's my way of saying F-U to Beppo - I can have my chicken w/ mashed potatoes... and eat it too without paying more.  Yes... I do go on the Bucca Di Beppo website.

If you like big, filling food with tons of cheese this is the place to go. The service is friendly, (attempts to be) funny, and generally helpful. They do exaggerate about the portion sizes... come on, a large can feed 4 people? Maybe 2 at most. Bottom line: More than decent, extremely Americanized Italian food in bulk. Compared to Olive Garden and its kin, Buca stands out as the best. Avoid if you're on a diet.

For an Italian restaurant that's franchised, it beats the hell out of Macaroni Grill (for me anyways) servicewise and tastes a whole lot better.  It opens at 5pm (don't ask), and the food is better than average.  Get the dessert while you're there, it's worth it.  Oh yea, bring some friends.  It is family style.  Unless you want to try out to be next hot dog eating champion, the large portions are better shared than by your lonesome.

Italian chain of restaurants full of pasta, wine, and naked pictures all over.  I love the pictures, the big round booths, and the food.  Really good Italian food, the bar is fun, and the pictures are all over the place.  Lot's of appetizers, and lots of dishes, and did I mention that there are lots of pictures too?

Open from about 4pm and after.  It gets crowded, so either reserve, or get there before your hungry.  Usually big parties crowd the place but there is plenty of room.  I don't like the idea of it, but they even have a few tables in the kitchen walkway.  Weird.

Don't forget to check out the pictures in the bathroom and decor on the ceiling.

Buca offers family portions in a welcoming Italian environment.  The Italian/American photos and decorations that fill the red wall add to fun feeling of this place.  Everything is very good, whether it be the salad, pasta, chicken or pizza.  Go with a group!

As Bruce says, "it's so hard to find a saint in the city" - but he would be pleased as a kid from Jersey that this place really "brings it."  The food is classic Southern Italian with Family Style portions but the rooms and atmosphere are SO cool that even if the food is a bit off - you won't mind.  More importantly, I had to hit the waiter up with my "Harry Met Sally" list of restrictions and allergies (Yeh - I'm still single - shocking - right?) and amazingly - HE LISTENED.  He was so accommodating that I got to seriously enjoy the atmosphere and my humongous plate of spaghetti and meatballs.   A few weeks later I had the pleasure of checking out this same restaurant but at the Universal/City Walk location and I had the same pleasant experience.  I had just sat through an intense day of meetings at the Universal Sheraton for a convention and while I got a kick out of City Walk and all of the "goings on" - I was searching for a quiet place to eat and read the paper where I would not hear some lame-ass Band going through the motions while trying to entertain tourist Dewey and his family from Idaho.  Well, I found this joint again (it is quite  walk though at the very end) and after they led me back to an almost private room with pictures of Frank and Dead on the wall - I knew all would be cool - and it was.  Good date place - good place to bring folks from out of town (especially from back East) - and a cool Sunday night place if having Sunday dinner with your family was a staple and you miss it.

BUCCA DI BEPPO IS NOW OPEN FOR LUNCH!!!!
Parking can be a real pain in the elbow, but it is what it is.
It really doesn't make sense to eat at Bucca with only two people unless you wish to have a bunch of food leftover to take home.
My best experiences have been dinning in the Passion room and Pope Room. (The acoustics in the pope room are cool. You can hear the person directly across you really clearly cuz their voice bounces off the dome shaped center of the ceiling)
I can't think of any other restaurant that can accommodate 18 people around a round table. When you have 18 people at the table and the lazy susan is spinning and plates are being passed all over the place and everyone needs refills things can get out of hand, but our waiter was attentive and on point.
We had 7 dishes and dessert. I liked the Apple Gorgonzola salad, the eggplant parmigiana and the Chicken Marsala the most. I could have passed on the Penne Arabiata, monster lasagna, and lemon chicken.
We also had the dolce platter for dessert and I sampled the tiramisu but didn't like it.
I definitely would go back to Bucca with a large group!!!!

Do you have to eat here?  If you don't, maybe they'll close and something better will move in.  Seriously, this place is a mega-chain that thrives on Santa Monica's happy tourist trade and the occasional birthday party for some kids from UCLA who get tanked on cheap wine.  If you dig Italian and you're in Santa Monica, spend a little more and hit I Cugini on Ocean, or go downmarket and try Frito Misto.

Now i've been to this location twice, each time with large groups (it IS family style).  The first time we reserved a space ahead of time, ideally we would have liked to eat at 7:30ish, but whoever booked us said it gets too crowded and we needed to come in earlier if we wanted a space. Ok, fine we get there our party is split up over three tables and the place is EMPTY. WTF! food was alrite but we had to get up to pass plates to the others tables. that earned them two thumbs down! Second time, big group, another reservation, and we got the pope room. this was much better, even with the creepy looking pope in the center of the table. we had a big round table and a lazy susan to pass all the dishes around on.  the margherita pizza is kinda bland. Eggplant parmigiana is a wee oily but dang, its tasty. There arent many veg options but my friends really like the chicken marsala and the garlic cheese bread is always a winner (has slices of garlic on foccia bread).  Drinks can be hit or miss - stick with the wine.

american italian food served family style, ie the middle of the table. the servers are sweet, and during the day (weekend) sadly understaffed, now im serious, get meatballs. they are huge, (and though i am normally not a fan of served that big) and oh so moist. ive been here dozens of times and the last time i was here, i took a chance. i was with some of the pickest eaters i know, good cooks (better than myself, but not good enough to not respect my food) and presentation matters to them, and so the meatballs were made fun of, until they tried them, after which nothing more was said, that moist and delicious the conversation moved to our ability to deconstruct food and recreate them. ok garlic bread with the cheese also good, as is the Caesar salad, (which comes with anchovys whole ones right on top) if its your first time tell you hostess and you can get the scenic route that goes beside the kitchen. i like coming here with large groups, but small is nice as well. and one of these days im going to take the bf (if he ever decides to come to america) so we can play lady and the tramp with the meatballs. :)
