Four stars!  As long as you are looking for a fancy-type grocery store and not a place to stock up on staples (this would blow your budget at Canyon Market.)  But in the realm of Whole Foods / Bi-Rite / etc Canyon Market is great.

I would step off my shuttle at Glen Park BART, run down and grab some fish or wine for dinner, and run back to the BART.  Easy and convenient.

The fourth star is for the ribeye - which was the same quality as at Bi-Rite but somehow cheaper.  By no means cheap, but cheaper is fantastic!

I'm at Canyon Market probably at least once a day, and sometimes twice.  We live nearby and this is one of the few alternatives that we have to Safeway.  I love the Canyon, not only for their delicious produce, their tempting wines (and wine tastings) but also for their quirkiness.  Where else can you buy a pound of pancetta, a box of egg replacement, a bottle of Campari, biodegradable compost bags and a few yummy coconut macaroons?  That's right, almost nowhere.  While some products tend toward the pricier side, it is nothing like the crazy sticker shock at Whole Foods.  Also, I'm really grateful for the little signs they put up letting you know why the limes are expensive, or why the onions look kind of funky.

While I've read mixed reviews on Yelp about the Canyon, the best I advice I can offer is that you drop by and see if it fits with you, if it's your type of food and your type of peoples.  Oh, but don't drive.  Please, don't drive.  There is one tiny lot nearby that's supposed to be for BART parking, and other than that there is little to be had street parking.  Since the market went in, traffic congestion has gotten a lot worse on that corner and I've seen a lot of near accidents caused by double parking.  So, instead of driving take BART, because it is literally across the street.

Wine Tasting Review:

I know it may sound weird, but they do have wine tasting in Canyon Market.  I didn't believe it myself until some guy, aka Roberto, asked us if we wanted to taste a couple of wines.  Wait.  I take it back.  The Trader Joe's in Las Vegas also had wining tasting once (please refer to future review for details).  Anyways, I was surprised.

Roberto, a self proclaimed wine geek, was very knowledgeable and pleasant.  He pointed out the characteristics to notice of each wine we tasted and then gave us possible pairings.  He did a good job of making two wine novices feel very comfortable.

While we finished tasting the last wine, he mentioned he taught wine tasting somewhere but the classes got a little too crowded and impersonal.  He went on to say that he still likes sharing his appreciation for wine and now does tastings in the more cozier setting of his home.  I'm assuming that it'd be a very pleasant and enlightening experience based on our encounter.  I'll make sure to review it if we go.

I read so many reviews and also heard from people that this place is GREAT.... however, I was very diappointed when I walked in there.  Now I live in the neighborhood, but I only buy anything if I am desparate.  I rather go to Whole Foods.
The other day, I found a pack of Sushi (Tuna?) they were selling that looked very bad --- it seemed that if anyone tries that sushi, he would get sick.... it was not very fresh.
Everything seems over-priced, too.

I shop at Canyon for specialty items on a weekly basis. I really enjoy their  sandwiches and homemade breads. Although Canyon offers great products (at a very high cost) and seems to be a local store with the interest of the community, the store is not what it is made up to be. I've noticed that some of my favorite waiters have left the store. When I asked an employee there about employees leaving, the employee replied, "Because everyone here is fed up with the mistreatment of the owners." The employee also stated that the business is not a family business. The employee went on to say there are private investors who are not known to the employees or the public.

This makes me sick. I will not return!

I love this place.

I'm here just about every day. They have everything you need in a compact, easy to shop space. Great home made bread, organic everything, good coffee bar,  wonderful prepared foods, and the best mole in the city (check out the little home made offerings by the cheese area - they make amazing stuff!) The staff is always friendly and helpful.

Sure, I spend a fortune there, but it's cheaper than going out.

What impresses me about Canyon Market is the size of their open kitchen.  It takes up 1/3 of the store.  Even better, they have a great baker on staff.  I rushed over when Jonas T. recommended their cupcakes.  When you first walk in, you'll see their coffee kiosk to the left.  This isn't where the cupcakes are. The cupcakes are on the left side of the kitchen area near the house baked breads.  They're sold individually and also in 4 packs.  Flavors rotate.  On the day I visited, I saw three flavors (chocolate, vanilla, red velvet).  The cupcakes are a little smaller than usual as they don't have the height of most other bakeries.

* Vanilla cupcake with lemon buttercream and a fresh blueberry: Excellent cake: moist with visible vanilla bean specks.  The frosting was creamy, lemony, bright, and not too sweet.  It was colder and a little harder than I prefer but still very good.

* Chocolate cupcake with chocolate ganache: Dense, high quality chocolate flavor.  The cake was a little too dense in my opinion, making it more like a brownie.  The frosting was rich, creamy, and not too sweet.

The salad bar is $6.99/lb, cheaper than Whole Foods and Harvest.  I tried a couple of salads and thought they were good but not as good as the aforementioned places. The polenta triangles were slightly sour.  I did like how they make their own croutons.  Nice touch.

It's a medium sized "health food" market with a meat/seafood section, bakery with their own breads, deli, wine section, produce department, frozen foods, interesting drinks, gourmet cheese, and a good supply of tofu, seitan and made to order sandwiches.  They don't have their own parking which always makes me buy fewer groceries.

As soon as you walk through the automatic doors, you get a whiff of some mysterious odor.  I'm still trying to figure out whether it offends me, or if I'm indifferent to it.  And I still don't know what the hell I'm smelling!

But anyway, the salad bar is always stocked with goodies - yesterday they had something new, delicious dried tomatoes in oil (and I'm NOT usually a fan of those).

Everything is expensive, as things generally are in a frou-frou market, but if you're wiling to pay then you'll reap the benefits of organic produce, a large variety of refrigerated items and brands, and the fact that you're supporting a local business.

This is a great market and all, but it's bakery is totally underrated. They have some of the best cupcakes in the city at only $1.75 a pop - Heavey on the frosting but the cake keeps its moisture. Cheesecake (~$4 each) is not bad, but not great. Their deli/meat section is good too.

I was told that the cupcakes here are most delicious for $1.75, so I came here to try it.  There was only 1 left, but I got it anyway.  There was a bit too much cream on top, but the cake was not bad.  One of the guys there suggested the cheesecake and said it was really good.  so i bought that too.  The cheesecake was not bad at all.  At $3.00, it is extremely affordable.  For such a small specialty market, the prices are so affordable.  I will come back and try the cobbler.  Most of their baked goods sell out fast, so come early.

My favorite things about this place is their sandwiches; one of the best you have every had. Have em toasted; yummyy.

Salad bar is awesome; salad dressing quite good.

Meat and fish counter, superb nothing short of whole foods in my book.

Keep up the good work and I will shop there as much as possible. Support local businesses. I think this place deserves 4 stars since I am tough critic but I am giving it a 5 stars cuz i live in the neighborhood and it is the best market around.

I like shopping here for the following reasons:

It's off the Glen Park Bart, near the 26, 52, and 44 bus lines.
This place is very small...so what you'll find is
A) pay per pound salad bar consisting of lettuce, olives, candied walnuts, boiled eggs, poached chicken, tomatoes, grilled vegetable
salad, dried cranberries, grilled onions, etc. They also have hot soups...such as a seafood soup and potato leek. It changes daily.
Their sesame dressing and ranch are definitely tasty and fresh.

Their deli counter always has some good cooked/cold items:
Meatloaf, grilled shrimp, grilled salmon, ducklegs (sometimes), hot wings, broccoli salad, butternut squash or yam salad, sushi, grilled vegetable of the day, cold noodle salad (sesame noodles), and other things that vary.

I usually come here for a 1lb of their fresh baked salmon minus the dill sauce. It's cold, but completely moist and tender when slightly heated up. This goes well with a mixed green salad from their salad bar. The butterscotch pudding is also wonderful, and rivals what they service at Lark Creek Steak.

Be prepared to spend about $35.00-$40.00 just for 1 lb of salmon, 1lb of salad, 1 butterscotch pudding.

There are 2-3 small tables out in front to sit if you want to eat in the fresh air, or as most people do it, share your lunch with your dog. Soooo cute.

Minus one star. The cashier's need to smile more and be alot more friendly.

D'OH!   I did it again, damnit!

Went in for breakfast staples (local organic milk, half and half, yoghurt and such) and walked out with another  whopper of a bill.  Perhaps it was the many,  items I couldn't pass up, like guac, salsa and thick tortilla chips, the "Sandwich of the Day", the 70% cocoa chocolate bar, etc, etc, etc...

This little market is a gauntlet of not-to-pass-up goodies.  If you're an impulse buyer, like me, be careful stepping foot into this little Glen Park pit of temptation.

Why?  Because they stock high-priced and from what I've experienced so far, very boutique and high quality food and goods that are difficult not to try.  You have to fight the impulse to grab this or that  as you make your way towards  the friendly cashier staff.

My brother and sister-in-law, both Berliner Germans, who went to Canyon Market  (DAILY...for 6days straight) to buy whatever, really loved it.  They were extremely  impressed with the organic fruits and vegetables.  The huge seasonal bins of impressive and varied organic heirloom tomatoes nearly brought them to their knees.  Caprese Salad, for days, anyone?

Beyond that, Canyon Market has a very impressive salad bar, a small but nice selection of high-end liquors and a very good selection of wines and import beers.  The meats always look tasty and the seafood looks to be fresh, and ,whenever possible, local.  Their cheese section is small,  but that may be a nod to the local nearby cheese shop. (Perhaps Canyon is being a good neighbor to other established nearby businesses?)  The prepared food section looks pretty darn amazing although I haven't sampled any yet.  The in-house bakery does well also, seeminly going so far as not overlapping baked goods featured at the nearby Destination Bakery.

If you're a frequent Safeway or Lucky's shopper you'll probably run screaming because of the prices.  If you live nearby and are used to buying high quality, often local and organic food and goods (whatever the price) you may end up being a fan.

When I was looking for wine, specific to what my girlfriend and I enjoyed I called there after speaking with the winery.  I had the opportunity to speak with Richard, who advised he would call the distributor and call me back.  Of course I thought I wouldn't get a call at all, but sure enough, I got a call back within ten minutes.  The order of wine I wanted was going to be there the next day and I could pick it up on the way home.

I then thought it was a fluke, but nope, everyone there at the market were friendly, and the selection of items were great!  It was like a small town market in the big city.  It is really a gem and worth going to, not only for their selection but their unbelievable customer service.

Whole wheat baguettes? Jackpot. Had a fantastic turkey sandwich on said bread today, complete with friendly service and steps from BART. How awesome is this city that I can go from 16th/mission to Glen Park and back again with a tasty sandwich in hand in less than 30min.

The journey to try all food serving establishments continues....

If you're one of those people that enjoys spending time just walking through the market this one is for you.  This a beautiful looking market, always a pleasure to walk through the aisles and see what they have.  They do have some interesting things here too.  They carry a wide variety of beer, liquor, and wine (one of which is their own brand) that matches up with markets like Andronico's.  There are also lots of organic food options, a nice deli/meat/seafood area and a coffee bar.  The seafood here always looks amazing.  The coffee bar opens an hour earlier than any of the other cafes on the street too.  Like Trader Joes they never have anything on sale but unlike Trader Joes everything here is on the pricey side.  Overall I really like this market.  I would not come here to do my regular shopping but I love coming here just to take a peek.

Canyon!

I love shopping here. The selection is great and the in-store made food is fantastic. They also bake and make a pretty good mocha. I go there all the time because it's so conveniently close to Glen Park BART.

I removed one star for prices, somethings are way overpriced.

Sometimes it's great going to your cheese shop for your cheese, your bakery for some bread, the butcher for some meat, and sometimes it's just great to get that stuff in one place.  And it's even better when that place also has a great selection of organic produce, is BART accessible, and has Maltesers.

Probably one of the better grocery stores in the city.  Prices?  Well, I could probably do better than this place, but what I don't save in pennies I save in time.  Great little store.

Canyon Market is a nice addition to our neighborhood and I really like the deli.  It is always nice to be able to get off the bart and grab some food from there so my wife can have a night off from cooking.  I also like the cafe people in there, they are always really friendly.  I would give it another star if the prices were a tad better.

I LOVE THIS PLACE!

I am the type of person that tends to get overwhelmed with too many choices, but I'll complain when the options are too limiting.  Hello Gemini!  Anyhoo, this market falls squarely between those two states so satisfies me perfectly.  Oddly, I dont find it to be all that pricey considering the options and fare for offer.  The seafood is downright cheap and quite lovely... at least 30% less than the whole foods prices for similar offerings.  They are also one of the few markets that carry my beloved Quorn Tenders!  It's across the street from may FAVE taqueria and you cant help but feel cute strolling around in Glen Park.

Today as I was perusing the deli isle one of the sandwich makers talked me into getting a veggie sammie... He said he'd make it hot for me all toasted with melted cheese and sun-dried tomato.  I asked for a half sandwich and he obliged.  The half sandwich was HUGE and delicious and, at only $3.95, quite a bargain.

Thanks Canyon Market sandwich man... you made my lunch... literally.

This market has seen me hung over and funky, and has never once made me feel unwelcome.  The guys in the deli are all super sweet and offer suggestions on how to cook the meat if you ask (as a novice like myself does, often), and although the prices are higher than some places, the food is better than most places. you get what you pay for, people.  stop complaining.

Too hipster of Whole Foods?  Want to feel like you are not selling out the man, but are still spending enough $$ buying trendy artisan, organic, local food?  If so, Canyon is the place for you.

On the other hand if you are looking for Ding Dongs, refined sugar or Pabst Blue Ribbon, better not walk through these doors lest you be tarred and feathered for the SF hipster poser you really are ;-)

Another review called it "Whole Foods Lite" and that is pretty accurate.   for being small, the layout is well done and while the variety is slim, the selection is pretty good.

And as much as i tease and mock, I will be back.  Damn.

I went in and was kinda disappointed.  It was kinda small and I just wanted a few things to eat...but the selection didn't seem to be that great.  I got some salami, some tamales made with butternut squash and some chocolate pudding...and whoa...delicious.  Odd choices I know, but everything tasted so much better then anything I've purchased at Mollie Stones or Bristol Farms.  Just plain good.  I'm going to go back here though now when I feel the need to spend more money then necessary on organic foods.  They lose one point because the girl at the checkstand was giving off a super bad vibe.

its like a small town market. one that is is stocked and run by good country people with small town values, but don't think the products are quiet right and the salmon was $22 a pound. Between Cheese Boutique and Buddy's, not much has been added to the neighborhood.

But the salad bar is great, and the service is nice. The carry La Fin du Monde for far less that Whole Foods.

I found my holy grail fleur de sel here and only after traipsing throughout the city and not finding it at any of the Whole Foods, William Sonomas and Cost Pluses. I was also delighted to see that they carry a great variety of chocolate bars (Dagoba, Valrhona, and Vosges) and an impressive selection of cocoa powder and hot chocolate (Droste, Scharffen Berger, Dagoba, Green and Black) and probably others that have slipped my mind. And the only reason I even remember these items is because I'm currently on a salt and hot chocolate kick.

Here's a simple and quick way to make your own hot chocolate (because really, don't you get tired of paying $4 for a cup every day? I know I do!)

- buy a container of good quality, unsweetened cocoa powder.
- make a paste of a tablespoon of cocoa and a tablespoon of hot water, then whisk in hot milk (or soy milk or cream/half & half) until well blended.
- whisk in sugar to taste. Add a bit of salt as it brings out the chocolate flavor. If you have bits of chocolate laying around, melt some in with the milk for a richer flavor.
- if you want to experiment, add a pinch of cayenne, lavender, pepper, sweet paprika, cinnamon, cardamom, or cloves. etc.

OR for a richer drink with actual chocolate, you'll need:

1/2 cup whole milk
1/4 cup heavy cream
5 ounces good-quality dark chocolate, coarsely chopped

- combine milk and cream over medium heat until simmering (about four minutes).
- add chocolate and whisk until smooth. (I like using an immersion blender for a more frothy drink.) Add sugar to taste and serve immediately.

I love this store.  It makes me wish I lived in the 50s and that it is the only store to go shopping for groceries, wine, the butcher, toiletries, anything.  It's so quaint, and nice, and small and doesn't have a lot of selections so you don't have to worry about brands because you just get what they have.  They have a really good selection of cheeses, wine, deli items, and one of those make your own salad bars.   They are a little pricey, but I just feel better buying what few items I need through out the week here, then going to some stinky old Safeway!

Keepin it simple!

Potatoes are potatoes...Canyon Market isn't competing with the many, many, many organic produce stores on product (we all know what an organic leek looks and tastes like) so they must be competing on the experience. This comes down to hygiene and service, and on both of these measures Canyon Market is sadly lacking.

If I wanted to be ignored by surly teenagers I wouldn't have used contraception 15 years ago. As it is, these kids should be home making their own parents crazy, not fingering my food and listening to their iPods while they're 'serving' me.

The lady who runs this place seems nice enough, but it would seem she's too nice to the cretins she employs. She needs to implement some new standards, or she can stand back and watch a large part of her business drive up O'Shaughnessy to Mollie Stones where they know how to do this properly.

A food market that 's a block away from the Glen Park BART station, that  has several buses stopping right outside, that  I can walk to from my home, that sells organic meat, fish, veggies, fresh and dried fruit, prepared food, soup and salad bar, bulk and packaged grains and pasta, nuts, seeds, wine and beer, cheese, fresh bread baked daily on the prem, gorgeous fresh flowers, and lots, lots more.....what's not to love?  Oh, I know.  The prices.  Well, you can always hop in your car and catch the bargains at Safeway or Costco, or get vac-packed everything at Trader Joe's (don't forget to fill the gas tank on your way home).

awesome selection of gourmet food items from Charles Chocolate to cheeses, meats, wine, liquor, vegetables and fruits. With Cheese Boutique and Destination Bakery already in the neighborhood, Canyon Market completes the trifecta. There is a reason Whole Foods is nicknamed Whole Paycheck, the higher quality food will cost more to purchase. The same rule applies here. don't expect Lucky prices for this level of quality.  i had a nice shopping experience here while picking up some NYE celebration items - drinks, snacks, cheese, etc. the courtesy clerk helping bag my items offered help to the car. this happens also at Lucky's and Safeway too. But when was the last time Peter McGowan bagged and carried your groceries. Yes Janet the owner works at the store and we had a nice conversation about the selection of goods and the quality of the products here.
SF supports locally owned and operated businesses and this is one of them that should do very well here.

In the last couple of months, Glen Park has changed dramatically. In my point of view, for the good (even if it is an effect of the infamous gentrification). One result of this change, has been Canyon Market.

It is a really cute, organic, corner store and coffee bar. Now, it doesn't have everything (does any corner store?) you need but I like to consider it a little mini Rainbow grocery (with meat). They have amazing sandwiches and other fresh deli stuff. The service is also amazing! You won't stand by the deli for less than a minute without being asked if you have been helped, and they don't glare at you crazy when you ask for a bagillion samples!

The downfall? EXPENSIVE! However, as most corner stores, you pay for the convenience. And it is nice to have a little store so close to your house!

On a more unimportant note, the uniforms are horrible! Everyone working there looks like a meat packer in that nasty burlap sack shirt!! But don't let that discourage you from trying the Turkey, cranberry and brie sandwich!!

Canyon Market is basically Whole Food lite. Great products if you can afford it. They have a really great vegetable and cheese sandwich, you don't miss the meat at all. I took a few stars off though because their customer service can use some improvement. I've seen the cashier and the deli lady be rude to customers including yours truly. I won't be making any special trips to go there, but if I'm in the neighborhood their sandwiches are enough to lure me back in.

Not yet a perfect market, but it has enough to keep me coming back there over and over. The best features are: 1) fantastic baker - really very special, especially the cakes   2) great prepared foods - including some of the best rotisserie chicken and to-die-for-perfect pesto pasta salad 3) some hard-to-find brands, like Latini pasta . The biggest negative is very unreliable produce. They are also trying little by little to upgrade their wine section to make it a truly interesting and personal selection, even though it is at the end of the day  a food market, and so they still need to carry a fair amount of relatively generic stuff at low price points.

I haven't bought anything there except for a few mangoes and a cream soda, but I gotta tell ya...I'd buy mangoes for a buck-fifty each any day from this place.  Each one I've eaten was perfectly ripe and yummy.  Magic I tell ya...magic.

I visited this store for the first time when I went to the dedication of the new Glen Park Library on Oct. 13, 2007. I was delighted and surprised -- this neighborhood really needed a grocery like this. The closest large grocery store used to be the Safeway at the top of the hill in the Diamond Heights Shopping Center, and now Glen Park has its own natural foods store with a really good selection. Yes, a bit pricey, sort of like a mini-Whole Foods, but worth it, especially if you live nearby, like organics, and want convenience -- at last a natural foods store right there in the neighborhood. There's a butcher, baked goods, a deli, wines and cheeses -- the same type of things I'm used to picking up at Whole Foods. So next time I'm hiking around Glen Canyon I can stop by and pick up dinner when I'm done. It's very convenient to the Glen Park Metro and BART stations.

There are some really good aspects of this market, and really bad ones.  The bad ones outweigh the good.

Bad
#1  Their produce is shameful and for that alone they lose stars and get a scolding.  There are too many good produce vendors, and there are too many small organic farms who deliver to the city for them to justify the horrible quality of their fruits and vegetables.  Even if their produce was fresher the assortment is basic at best.

#2 Snarky people at the register, and snarky people behind the deli counter.  I asked a woman at the deli counter what the ingredients are in their pizza dough (its over by the cheese and made fresh daily) and she said "dough"  Four times I said, "no that is not what I'm asking you, what are the ingredients inf the dough."  She finally asked someone and I got my answer.  This is outrageous

#3 baked goods. Some of them are really nice.  But others are just awful.  My friend and I wanted a little something for our sweet toothies and we got a brioche thing - dry and un edible.

#4 Selection of other items - its so bizarre.  There are so many basics, staples, which are missing!  It always feels like the day after Thanksgiving when any store is totally picked over.  Many of their shelves are bare or half full.

5) cheese . . . OMG when you consider all the wonderful cheeses we have access to their selection is paltry.  I stand there, and stand there, and stand there - not finding anything special or even some of my favorite basics (like Laurel Chenel goat cheese - they don't have it)

Good
#1  wine department is quite good

#2 love that fresh pizza dough!

There's just something missing here.  Heart and soul?  Commitment to quality?   The vibe of Glen Park?   Yeah - all of the above.

I heard the owner is a dotcommer who made buckets of money and thought it would be cute to open a market.  It shows !  These people are not grocery pros.  Some departments rock (wine) which is probably an indication of the owner's preferences, while others are just awful (produce, staples, cheese)

I'd say his fantasy was to run a wine and bakery shop - he might have stayed with that instead of failing at being a full grocery store.

GREAT grocery store (if a bit pricey)! I am so sad I moved away from Glen Park just as this place opened.

They have: lots of samples...beautiful produce....my favorite pizza in the world, America Flatbread (in the frozen section)...lots of vegetarian stuff...great homemade bread...delicious vegan pumpkin spread (much more delicious than it sounds)....etc etc

Glen Park needed a grocery store after Diamond Super burned down years ago and now we have it.   I'm pretty selective about what I buy there because it is pricey and I mostly go for the meat, fish, prepared salads, or when i need one or two items.  Downside for me is the lack of parking; I'd probably go there more often if it was easier to park. But then, I'd probably use more of the businesses in Glen Park if there was more parking.  Would be nice if they had a delivery service for those of us who are getting up there in years!
