Queenie's is great. Maybe no French Laundry but they get five stars because they deserve four for the food, service and dog friendly atmosphere; the last star they deserve for being in the town of Elk.
I love the reviewer complaining about the slow service and the outdoor bathrooms. You have got to be kidding. You are in a town with a full time population of maybe 75 people. No traffic light. No gas station. No public sewer or gas lines for God's sake.
Yet is owned, operated and staffed by locals. It is amazing that it exists at all much less pumping out delicious food consistently. There is nothing like it until Point Arena in the South and Mendocino in the North. Plus in Elk you are more likely to find yourself sitting next to a table of locals than another couple of tourists. Can't say that about Mendocino.
Queenies is a long-time favorite of mine - I'm a former local and still try to get back there whenever I go to visit. The people are the best part of the deal. Others complained about the bathroom ... Well, they used to have one inside but their septic could not cope with the tourists and their lack of understanding about delicate rural plumbing so I guess they had to close it. Nevertheless ... it's worth the trip.
Too bad it takes so long to get here (although the drive is beautiful). They serve an amazing breakfast! A must stop if you happen to be in Elk.
Queenie is making great food! Delicious, comfort-food/homemade style plates. Big portions. Great potatoes, omelets, waffles, and perfect COFFEE for a 'roadhouse cafe'. All organic ingredients, made with love. Awesome choice for breakfast on the coast.
Great little breakfast place located along the Mendocino coast. A bit out of the way, but hey, there isn't much out that way except beautiful views and cozy towns.
Our inn recommended Queenie's when we asked about good "greasy spoon" breakfast places.
The food was delicious. My wife had a scramble and I had the homemade corned beef hash. The fruit cup my wife had instead of potatoes was a little odd, looked like it has been tossed in yogurt. The corned beef hash has was excellent - real corned beef (not the mushy stuff from the can).
Service was friendly, good portions of food, bottomless cups of coffee, views out the front window of bluffs overlooking the ocean.
They do warn you that they put extra "TLC" into their foods and as result, be patient. The food did take a while to arrive, but it was worth the wait.

Gayle and I stopped in for breakfast on our drive up the coast from Pt. Arena. The ambiance could be construed as Jeff D.'s "nothing special here". My translation is: local, non-pretentious, comfortable, and a good value for the money. The food (including the coffee) and service were both excellent.
We enjoyed this cafe. It seems to be the only kind of cafe in its class within 15 miles. The potatoes were great. The coffee was good and the omelets were more interesting than I had expected. Unfortunately, the wait for our food was a bit long and the bathrooms are outside and pretty inhospitable.
All in all, it's a great place to stop if you're in the area.

A great stop on the road to Mendocino. When we were there it seemed to be favored by bicyclists. They've got interesting looking omelets, but I went for a very tasty salad. Food and service were great, but yes, the bathroom is outside behind the mechanic next door. Oh well.
A 'roadhouse cafe,' for sure, but with wonderful breakfasts served until 3pm. The ambience practically shouts "nothing special here" but, if you're in the neighborhood, stop in and have a satisfying meal. Afterwards, take an equally satisfying stroll, going across the street and down to the beach. It is never crowded, and contains magnificent driftwood sculptures and dwellings. A nice few hours diversion from the frenzied hustle and bustle of Fort Bragg.
