"BEST IRISH BAR I HAVE BEEN TO IN SAN FRANCISCO!! I found out about this place on yelp and was pleased to see this awesome Irish band…" read more »
Been to many a shows here when i was still in the Bay Area. Many memories of this place are good. From hip-hop to hardcore I never had a bad time; I saw Sage Francis bitch slap some kid in the middle of his set, Andrew WK almost broke my ribs, Brotha Ali preached me to peace and laid out the values of ones dreams in a 16 bar freestyle verse, Aceyalone doing his entire Book of Human Language, getting ripped to shit for GlassJAw's headlining tour with American Nightmare.. man, It seems this venue brings out the best in many touring artists. Shows always felt intimate no matter who it was or how big they were. Only gripe I had was the random columns in the middle of the floor blocking people's view, but it just motivated you more to work your way up to the front. Other than that I loved Slim's and was always excited when someone I liked was playing there.
I've always had a good time here . . .
But don't get me wrong. I've tried to find holes in this place. There exists a dead spot towards the front of the stage . . . the front speakers just don't face the front third of the crowd. . . oddly enough.
And the bartenders tend to be zombie like.
But I've seen some amazing shows Here. Weezer in 2001. The Slackers countless times. It doesn't hurt that you can easily push your ways through the numerous posers in the crowd to get through the front.
If you favorite band is playing here make sure to stand 20-30 feet back from the stage if you are tall enough. You will get the best sound there. The bartenders are obsessed with seeing everyone's hand stamp for serving alcohol, which pretty much means you have to get your entire party up to the bar for a round of drinks.
Not a bad venue, in fact one of the best for an awesome "cozy" show.
Small. That's the word I will use to describe Slim's.
I saw The Pillows here last year (couldn't make it this year..T_T), and it was packed. It had to have been breaking fire code, since I was pushed all the way to a wall with a set of stairs nearby. My friends and I were blocking the stairs, which was probably a hazard. Advice - stay as close to the middle of the place as possible and bring a few big guys with you to keep from being smooshed by smelly strangers. Yes, that's the problem with going to a J-rock concert- the fellow otaku's come out and many don't use the deodorant.
Other than the crowded smelliness, it was a good night. Sound wasn't bad, nice clear view of the stage (even from the sidelines) and the staff was good about working with the crowd (didn't take us long to get in, even though the line was all the way around the block).
If you're under 21 they slap this big fat black stamp on your hands, which doesn't come off easily. Which sucks if your concert was on a wednesday and you have to explain to the boss why your voice is completely gone. It's harder to use the "I got sick" excuse when you have the tell-tale signs of a party on your hands.
We also got a $20 ticket for parking in the Costco parking lot...but that's still better than taking MUNI at night..

it's cool n all, but not my favorite place to come see music. the layout is just odd somehow, and it feels awkward. when i find out that a band or musician i like is playing there i kinda think twice about going. sorry!
Really not a fan of this venue. The stage isn't elevated enough so it's really difficult to see the band, especially if it's packed. The sound is good. But I thought the point of a smaller venue was to feel close and personal to the band? The bartenders and bouncers were acting like cops. I guess they have to deal with drunk people and loud music. But it was a bit patronizing. Anyhow, I 'd choose The Independent over this venue any day.
Eh. The couple of times I've been here the shows were decent, but MAN does it suck to be smashed up against a pole in the middle of the freaking venue. I don't even care who plays here anymore, there are better venues out there to go to. It doesn't really help that it's in SOMA.. since I absolutely detest that "neighborhood".
MAYBE I'll come back if there's going to be this band that RARELY comes to San Francisco... or something..
I love booking shows at Slim's. They are all ages, have food and the staff is so great!!!
Keep an eye out for my upcoming shows there:

Slim's is everything you want in a Dirty Garage-Band sort of way.
But, as we have established, I am a dirty Girl. Dirty old man bars, dirty music venues - the less pretentious, the better Love!
It's loud, it's small, the bathroom is grimy. It's everything loud, fuck off music is. Of course, if you're headed here for some lighter fare, then fuck you.
There's a disgusting bar (to match the rest) where you can get what you want if you scream (primal therapy for you timid assholes) and the people aren't always nice, but that's why you love them (confidence issues?)
It's always full, it's always fun.

I give this place 4 stars because I was with some awesome company. It doesn't matter how cramped quarters get or how many people roll on by with their stinky armpits. It doesn't even matter when a girl comes by and presses up against your bladder.
I went here with a friend to see The Pillows, a Japanese Rock band. They're apparently really popular, gaining a cult following around California. They played a bunch of really cool songs which anyone could ROCK out to; even an encore came on! The seizure-inducing lights, dozens of people crowding around the water cooler, and a CLEAN bathroom made Slim's all the more attractive a someone like me.
Try to grab a seat at the bar and make sure you have a good view of the stage.

Love this place. Been coming here since I was a teenager. So many great shows so many memories. The sound is great, better than any other venue of it's stature. Fuckin awesome!
I was wrong about you guys. I came here to see Streetlight Manifesto (3/31/08) and had a better time than I had expected. I didn't use any of your facilities or buy any of your drinks but the atmosphere I picked up was relaxed and unpretentious. I'm definitely looking forward to coming to more shows here.
I really enjoyed this place to see bands that aren't up and coming yet.
I bought the tickets online and was going to pick them up on the day of the event. The wait wasnt bad at all...well we got there kinda late and they were very friendly and couteous.
Once we got in it was a small venue..but it makes you feel like your part of the band. The sound system wasnt all too bad...everything was crystal clear.
I got to see "Paramore" and "Nightmare of You" when I went here (obviously it was awhile ago since Paramore is kinda big now). I was able to be up close to the stage almost to the point where I could touch the artist on stage. It gets pretty packed in there...so you can start smellin B.O. but other than that it was a great place to watch a band perform

Having cut my concert teeth on the Phoenix, the no moshing, no crowd surfting, no stage diving thing kind of threw me off. Not a bad venue, not the best acoustics. I would come back if there was something good playing.
This place reminds me of the classic rock and roll bars. The bathrooms aren't sanitary, the floor is dirty, there is stickers all over the walls. That is part of the appeal though! The booker has great taste for the most part. Ticket prices have risen a bit within the past few years but that is too be expected. The sound system is not the best but is pretty excellent. There is a convenient coat check and even dinner and food (though it is pricey and not the best food around.
Also, if you like mingling with the musicians you are there to see this is probably the single most easy venue to do that at. I can't count how many people I have met at this place.

I went here last night for a show... the box office aspect went smoothly, just checked off my name and handed me my tickets... the other line didn't take very long either, got the proverbial pat down... Inside it was already quite crowded except for the bar, there was plenty of space to get a drink... apparently they have food here as well but I didn't get any, although at one point I did smell french fries...
So this was a really great experience if you don't include the shirtless, sweaty, B.O. guy who was molesting me... The bands were great, and the atmosphere was good.. lots of mohawks and rockabilly girls =)
I will definitely come back here to see another show, it was very smooth... and don't mind the *No stage diving, No crowd surfing, No moshing or you will be removed, thanks* sign cuz there was moshing and I didn't see anyone physically removed...
They have free water in coolers and they serve your beer in plastic cups...
There's a lounge with tables upstairs on what looks like a loft, the food sign is in the back corner, the bar is straight ahead when you walk in, and the stage is to your left.

This would be a 3.5 if possible.
I saw the second night of four, of Built To Spills shows last year. Probably not the best night (it was a Thursday) of the four, but it was ok.
The venue too, is ok. Nowhere near Bimbo's or the Independent or Boom Boom Room, but we can only have so many kick ass places to go!

Some of the best shows are at Slim shows. I have been to about a 100 events at Slim's and never once have had an issue. The line is always short since everyone strolls in at least minute, the band almost always comes out before and after to meet anyone who sticks around and the stage is right above my chest so there you are able to get up close and personal with the guest.
For the size of the venue, the sound system is top notch and could rival the Warfield. The lighting isn't as great, but who needs a light show when you got a great singer in front of your face. Now, I'll be honest, the bathroom are dirty as hell, there is no real check in, so you are stuck with your stuff, the last time I went, I was told it "was full" and the girls who GO to slim's are ugly as sin, but what other venue will offer you free water at the end of the night?
I always bring newbies to Slim's, if they want to have a good time with fans, the music and the band, you can't go no wrong with Slim's. It's an experience in itself.
Being at Slim's is akin to standing in that huge auditorium at Disney prior to entering a ride. Some douche gets on a mic and announces "Laaaaaaaadieeeeessss and gentelllllmennnnnnn, welllllcommmmeeee to Sliiiiiiiiiiiiiiim's." And they then proceed to tell you where your exits are located and what type of behavior is and isn't tolerated.
That's where the Disney similarities end, unfortunately. Because I'd dislike this place a lot less if I got to go on an awesome-bitchin' ride after being forced to listen to all that pomp and circumstance bullshit.
There are so many weird little rules you have to adhere to just to see a damn rock n roll show. You go outside to smoke and to come in, you have to go back to the very end of the line and get frisked and interrogated by their rude and immature staff just to get back into a show that you paid good money to see. I'm not too into being treated like a criminal when all I want to do is enjoy myself.
I often wonder how Slim's goes about hiring some of these people. Do they post an ad on craigslist? If so, what does it say? "Well-known concert venue in SOMA looking for motivated, joyless, hateful individuals with a real vendetta against any kind of fun. Must be willing to work weekends."
If you're under 21 and aren't resourceful enough to get a fake ID, then I guess Slim's might be a good place to see some music. But for those of us that are legal and into having fun when we go out, it's not the best place. Yeah, yeah, I realize that since The Pound closed down, Slim's is *the* place for metal shows. I'd never thought it possible I would hate a venue more than I had hated The Pound, but Slim's definitely takes the cake on that
Slim's is my least favorite venue and I only come here if someone REALLY great comes through. Unfortunately for me, a lot of metal bands play at Slim's these days, so I sometimes find myself here more often that I'd like.
The sound system is decent, and usually there is somewhere for me to stand so that I can hide from the crowds and occasional mosh pits.
This is one of those places that I truly cannot be sober at, so I always station myself close to the bar. I gotta admit, the bartenders are usually pretty cool and it's not THEIR fault that the drinks here are overpriced, so I cut them a little slack.

Came here to see a metal show (Amon Amarth! They're from Sweden...) Decided to go for the dinner package (it was an extra 20-25 bucks on top of the ticket price). Well worth it! For dinner I got a salad, steak, veggies, potatoes, and a cheesecake for dessert. You get to eat up in the balcony which provides a great view of the show.
I mean how cool is that... drinking my bourbon, with a tasty steak... at a metal show. The waitresses are all very friendly, and the bartenders can make a stiff drink. If anything, I think the acoustics in this place aren't the greatest. They do seem to be camera friendly here (but that might be dependent on the band, if they are friendly or not... so check ahead).
I think for future shows the dinner package is the way to go.

This is one of my least favourite places to see a show in the city. I don't know what it is about Slim's that I dislike so much; as an all-ages venue, it's decent, but I really wish they didn't serve alcohol. Don't get me wrong: some of my favourite venues are 21+, so this quibble has nothing to do with my personal beliefs on alcohol at shows. Something just always goes horribly wrong at this place, though. The crowds are loud, more drunken than those at most 21+ clubs I frequent, and the location of the bars is really awkward. Not to mention, I never feel like the sound is right. It's alright, but certainly a venue I only go to if the band playing is really worth it.

I was going to give Slim's four stars until I started really thinking about my experience there. Cheap tickets, check. A wide selection of beers at reasonable prices, check. Booking acts I want to see, check. Easy access to public transportation and post-show food, check. Clean (for a nightclub) bathrooms, check. I really don't have any complaints.
I guess the poles could be annoying, but I've never had trouble simply moving over slightly so they were no longer blocking my view. The crowd and staff were all really mellow last time I was there; however, I was there to see Del, so maybe everyone was just stoned.

Kids love this place, and rightfully so, it's one of the best all ages venues in SF. Sure it's annoying when a group of pill-popping youngsters converge in the center of the floor, leaving you staring at one of the structural poles blocking the view of the stage. (Ah, to be young again.) Don't worry, the sound system is amazing and the talent is always top notch, usually bands on the cusp, locals with a following and big bands longing for that intimate setting.

I've been to Slim's at least 5 or 6 times. I love that I can say that I saw so-and-so play here several times before they blew up and only had to pay $8! From the experiences that I've had, the crowd is usually pretty cool and not pushy even when it's crowded. If someone you're interested in seeing is playing at Slim's, I'd suggest checking it out once.

Josh B's Experience:
Opening act...blew.
Saw the Melvins...hated them.
Sound system...sounded like a pocket radio.
Bar...rude staff, expensive drinks.
Beer...served in cups, spills everywhere.
Rules...No stage dives, no crowd surfing, no mosh, no fun.
Staff...pulled people frequently, not happy.
Hearing...gone for three days.
Slim's...sucks donkey.
UPDATE 3/22/08:
I saw Nile here on the Ithyphallic tour. Dallas told us that the ONLY place where there is true metal was right there at Slims. After watching their show explode like a god damn atom bomb I have to say that I agree. All other places were false metal. Only Slim's was true metal.
Where else in the Bay Area can you see the Iron Maiden of death metal? Nowhere.

ORIGINAL REVIEW:
Since the true metal venue PoundSF closed down (thanks SF!) Slim's is the place where all of the killer metal acts are playing.
They have a hard concrete floor that will kick your ass. Your dogs will be barking when you leave this place. It can get extremely hot, so unless you're throwing down in the pit, you might want to stand by the door.
They have a foolish one drink at a time policy. I guess this makes sense with the kids around, but it slows things down if you're trying to get loaded. I'm not straight edge, I want to get f***** up!
There is plenty of parking around and it's a decent enough place to see shows. See you there!

How I go from excited to annoyed in 10 seconds flat --
Seconds 1-5: I read that one of my favorite bands are coming to San Francisco
Seconds 6-10: I glance down the page and notice that they are playing at Slims.
This ranks up there with one of my least favorite places to see a show. There are poles in the way, the sound is always off (usually too much drum and not enough vocals, or the volume is just insanely high), the crowd always seems vaguely pissed off (even for bands that are sweet and poppy), the venue is always packed beyond the maximum occupancy for people, and it's an all ages venue. Now don't get me wrong.. I have no issue with 18 year olds coming to see a show. Heck even older high schoolers aren't a problem. But when a show is littered with screaming junior high schoolers who spend half a show sending text messages and taking photos for their Myspace and Facebook pages I get annoyed. And then I realize what an old pain in the ass I'm turning into.
But in all seriousness, I have missed several shows for bands that I enjoy (but not love) all because I know that they are playing at Slims.

14 years from now, my 4 year old might look back on last night and realize one of two things.
Either I scarred my child for life by giving him a mohawk and taking him to see the Aquabats at Slim's where he got backstage (yes! At four! If that's not rad, I don't know what is), met his hero DJ Lance from Nick Jr's Yo Gabba Gabba, and when it was finally time to go home, got to go out of the back entrance like some kindergarten VIP.
Or, he will look back and realize just how much it meant to me to share a pure, unadulterated (but G-rated) evening of Orange County ska-punk - even if it meant me waking up the next morning feeling like I'd been run over by a train (ska jumping for two hours with a 35 pound kid on your shoulders will do that to you). He'll realize that I gave him an important gift last night... that we shared a rad moment, mom and son, at the side of the Slim's stage, both of us completely mesmorized by the sound.
But enough about my squishy mom moment where I realized for the 5,000,000th time in his four years on this planet that my child is quite possibly the most amazing human being on Earth...
The venue... Slim's is cool. I think I've been here before in my "I'm with the band" days. It's not so sketchy of a neighborhood and the place is neither super tiny nor excessively large. Acoustically, the Great American Music Hall has it beat by a long shot, but it's cozy and comfy and in some weird way reminds me of a larger version of the slick black painted booths at the Lusty Lady.
I have to especially point out (probably much to his chagrin) that one of the security guys went way out of his way. He brought ear plugs for the little one, escorted us downstairs to the potty (the kid had to go... I can hold mine!), helped me find my lost 5/8th Elektroplug that slid out of my ear (totally not the kid's fault, mama was too excited about the show), and after the Aquabats did "Pool Party", he was the one who ushered us out of the back door so we wouldn't have to make our way through the crowd.
Incredible.
Totally and completely rad.
Plus Ricky Fitness is totally and completely hot.

I saw Del the Funky Homosapien at Slim's and it was tight. Slim's is the first music venue I went to in San Francisco and Oakland's own, Del, was the act.
I probably shouldn't mention this because next time I won't be able to get a seat, but there is an upper lounge, where you can sit to be served food and drink. (with a two drink minimum)
I really wanted Del to play all night long, but as it was, I have a feeling he went a little bit overtime because the show ended abruptly as he finished his last song.
There were hella people smoking during the show; it seems California staff security simply ignore it. In fact, I think I saw one of them hitting it before he passed it.
The venue sounds great. Maybe the show I went to had great sound techs, maybe Slim's has a great system - or maybe some combination of the two. Until I hear otherwise, I'm going to give Slim's the five stars it deserves.

I've always liked this place. Back in the day before we were legal, my other friend that liked rock shows and I would come here to see up and coming bands. I like that it's small so the shows always feel fairly intimate and it rarely gets very overcrowded. Lately there hasn't been much going on here that I'm interested in but I had the chance to go back to see Del the Funky Homosapien recently and I was re-impressed with Slim's. Ticket prices were reasonable, it wasn't a crunch to get in, it got full but not crowded, there's cheap coat check, additional ladies' room downstairs and a decently priced, decently stocked bar.
The only downside is that unless you're in the front or lucky enough to get one of the few table seats in the mezzanine, there's no way a little girl like me can see anything on stage - even in heels.

I went here for a concert once and my hearing still has not returned to normal.
Friend: How was your weekend?
Lupe: What?
Friend: I say, how was your weekend?
Lupe: What?
Friend: What the hell is wrong with you?
Lupe: What do you mean 'why is my mom with me'?
Friend: That's not what I said! Are you deaf?!
Lupe: What?
And scene.
I had an amazing time on Christmas eve. They host a Gospel concert with the "Oakland Interfaith Gospel Choir". It was one the most beautiful Christmas eve I had away from home.
Great voices, beautiful atmosphere, and really joy running into my vein through the singing.
They make you sing and dance even if you think you would never do it...
Take a note for next year!

Slim's is a pretty cool place to go see a show. The house sound guys do a good job in making the variety of acts that come through sound good. Just went for the Del show last week and they did an amazing job mic'ing and mixing the drums for one of the opening acts, The Serendipity Project. Drinks are pretty cheap to which is important at a show. I hate getting into a place only to find out that you have to pay 7 dollars a beer, etc.

Not a horrible venue. Parking kinda sucks around here, especially if the show's on a weekend (but you knew that already, right?) I agree with a lot of the reviews, there's just something about Slim's that brings out the worst in the drunken fools. I've seen the bouncers get hands-on more than a few times; saw one kid get carried out unconcious (dunno what happened exactly, someone nailed him in the pit?). The sound has been hit or miss the times I've been here (last few shows were better). The pillars on the floor are kind of intrusive and can be a bit of a view blocker. I've been to worse places.
i would say the majority of all the good shows i have ever seen have been at slim's. sure, the poles kinda get annoying, and on some nights security is particularly crabby (ie Suicidal Tendencies), but too many good memories have been had here to let any of that get in the way. soundwise it's great, there's not a bad spot in the house as far as view goes, unless you're behind a pole, then you're fucked.
drinks are standard fare, pretty pricey, but if you're not an idiot, you will go to the liquor store across the street and pre-fade. parking is plentiful in the general vicinity, and is easy to get to from anywhere.
long live Slim's.
Awesome shows: NOFX, Fu Manchu, BigWig, Nerve Agents, Suicidal Tendencies, TSOL, The Casualties, Death By Stereo, Team Sleep, The Melvins, Municipal Waste, ALL.
Good-to-OK: AFI, Hot Water Music, Sick of it All
As a bar, Slim's is so-so with a less than breath taking selection. Same goes as a dining establishment, which is a shame because the space seems so adaptable to so many potentially awesome opportunities. Only one of said opportunities is really realized and that is as a concert venue. With such a wide open floor and a great stage Slim's really shines. Yeah the poles kind of suck but they do serve as a good place to ditch your drink to get your groove on or if your sponsor just walks in. Kidding, my sponsor is a homebody and doesn't go out that often.
I saw Until June, Matt White and Melee at Slim's last night and I have to say, I didn't have any of the problems these other reviewers have had. The crowd was cool. The bartender treated us well. Actually my Red Bull / Vodka's were almost too heavy on the Vodka, which is hard to say these days when bartenders try to water down drinks as much as possible. I also really liked that Slim's has a couple of tables where the older folks (like myself) can sit down and listen to the music. The sound wasn't great - thus the 3 stars - but it was well worth $13 for a ticket.
I really like this place, it's a small venue but I like the intimacy of my music shows, mix that in with some drinks and I got my night right there. When you're at a place like the Bill Graham Auditorium by the Civic Center the music drowns throughout the building and all you hear is the muffled sound of the instruments and the murmuring of the singer. But Slim's is quite different, the small capacity of the place makes the music and singing more bearable.
I was there with some friends to see Puffy AmiYumi when they did their small American tour of the west coast. Anyway, I could hear every word of what they were saying, even though it was Japanese, no mumbling at all. Like I said, the intimacy of the place gave a more fun feeling to it. The crowd was having a good time, the bar had it's share of decent booze drinks. I think more major bands should do little concerts in smaller venues like Slim's, but then again, that's my opinion.
Oh, there's also a little section, like a little balcony area for people to sit down and eat the little finger food they have there.
I knock one star off because for a concert venue, parking is harsh.
I've been coming to Slim's as long as I can remember, and yeah, it's not the most perfect venue, but I like it. It's small enough, but big enough, and they serve food! I've seen many a great show here, and I love how it's intimate enough that the performers can really interact with the crowd, and that they typically end up milling through the crowd after their set is over.
My only gripe is that they need some better communication amongst the staff. When my show is moved here from another venue and I call to make sure I'm all set to get in, do I need to bring anything, etc., and you tell me no? And then I show up and almost don't get let in because there is no record of me and the manager scolds me by saying I should've brought something (and this also happens to two other people)? That's miscommunication among the staff, and you should be more concerned about that than about whether or not I'm trying to sneak into a show featuring someone that hardly anyone has heard of.
Just saying.

Seen so many shows here since I was 16. Consistently good bookings. The sound system is good to me and I'm picky about that kind of stuff. The stage is low so you can get really close to your favorite acts. Some Yelpers don't like the support poles, but they came in handy for me. When the front area gets wild and my feet don't touch the ground anymore, I needed those poles to hang on to. The last show I went to was "Cross Canadian Ragweed". They are from Oklahoma and this was the only place they played. Slim's gets five stars for hosting my new favorite band.
Parking has always been easy for me in this area. There is a late night Pizza place on the same block that helps absorb the Hefeweizen.
