I gave the Saint Marks 5 stars based on price & location even though I'd consider it a 2 or 3 star hotel.

The Saint Marks is a WONDERFUL HOTEL!
The location is fantastic and you can't beat the rates. I have stayed in crappier hotels in New York for not much less money.

You have to be a total uptight snob to be bothered by the hourly rates. There is nothing wrong with that. There is so much to see and do in New York so a fancy/swanky hotel room is useless. Who would sit in a hotel room most of the day in New York?
I found the rooms to be very clean, beds were very comfortable. What more would you want in a cheap hotel? Sure the staff is rude but isn't that what New York is famous for?

I travel a lot throughout the US, Europe and Asia. New York is a very expensive city and I am glad there is a centrally located hotel that is affordable. I've seen too much gentrification in major US cities. I've seen too much of that here in San Francisco where I live as well as in Chicago. The yuppies have sterilized too many once cool neighborhoods with their lame over-priced wine bars, health clubs, vegan cafes and boutiques.
It's nice to see a hold out of old New York.  Not everyone can afford to stay at the Waldorf Astoria or even the W.
It's nice to see a place where ordinary folks can be decadent and hedonistic and have their affairs. ;)

This place has a 2-star feel/look to it, yes. But based on my experience overall, I'll be nice and give them 3. I didn't have a horrible stay here, to be honest. It was ok.

I would probably stay here again in the future ONLY because a) it has a prime location in the East Village, and 2) the room served its purpose -- I had a bed to sleep on, a window to look out of, a bathroom to shower in, and a floor to throw my suitcase on (wouldn't that be funny if there wasn't a floor? And impossible, if you think about it.).

But believe me, this is not the Hyatt or the Waldorff by any means. The rooms give off a slight assylum feel, if you will. The beds are singles and the TV is bolted to the wall (think of a hospital). They only accept cash and as we found out later that night from someone next door at the bar, they rent rooms by the hour, if ya catch my drift (and if you don't, well...go back under that rock you crawled out from and STAY THERE!).

On the upside, the window was large and provided good light in the morning, our towels were plentiful and clean, we had running water, and there was a shelving unit thingie with hangers next to one of the beds where we could hang up our wrinkle-ables.

So...as I stated, it served its purpose. And...the price was decently right for that area.

WARNING: If someone at the front desk asks you if you need a ride to the airport upon your departure (particularly a tall, darker complected man with black hair who thinks he's Rico Suave or something), tell them NO! NO! NO! Seriously. Catch a cab on your own. We made the mistake of saying yes, we need a cab, but instead, the man called one of those Nazi private car drivers. He wanted to charge us 40 bucks to get to LGA, plus a tip! I don't THINK so. We ran away from him TOO fast, caught a cab down the street, and only ended up paying 27 bucks, THANKYOUVERYMUCH!

This place was cheap and we got good last minute deals. Another friend of mine was visiting with his friends so they needed the room last minute and was able to get one held for him. The guys that checked us in were kind of freaky so we were either out or stayed in our rooms. Theres no real lobby to hang out in. It was in the East Village and there were cool local shops and eateries around, and it was really close to the subway station which was convenient. We got a room with two beds and the room was small but it was clean (including the bathroom). I think it's a good place if you just need a place to sleep for a night or two and don't wanna spend too much money on something luxurious. I was with my friend and boyfriend, so if I was traveling alone or only with females I probably wouldn't stay here bc its kinda scary.

LONG REVIEW.
I can't believe people gave this place more than two stars. I'm giving it two only because of it's location - but other than that, I won't be staying here again unless I suddenly leave my current profession and become a hooker. A friend and I were coming from Boston and decided we'd just stay up all night - bad idea, because around 3am we were crashing hard. (Somewhere around 23rd?)

I figured ..hmm, st. mark's. So we went back down and decided we'll take a nap. I asked the guy behind the window if it was clean and he said "well we change the sheets". This meant we'd be sleeping in our jackets. There was a chart near him that had the hour people went in. He handed us the key, I handed him $50 for two hours and said someone would bang on the door when our time was up,hahaha.

Behind us was a creepy old man with a bag and a hooker. Swanky.

So we walk in.. and it looks just like a creepy hotel. The bathroom looks clean only because I'm sure no one stays here long enough to shower. We kept all our clothes on and I turned on the tv so I didn't have to hear the people in other rooms having sex. The tv turned out to be two choices: porn or cartoon network. Awesome

My friend was sleeping within 10 minutes but I just couldn't do it. After an hour, I felt gross laying there so I washed my face.. and saw roaches. I had a heart attack and we got the hell out of there and spent our morning at the Washington Sq Park diner.

For some reason, I thought this would be a good place to house my family when I was graduating from NYU.  Sure, the place is cheap (around $100 a night) and really close to where things were going on for me, but... uh... let's just say they also rent rooms by the hour, and my mom got to hear a domestic violence case going on above her while she was trying to take an afternoon nap.  I'm just saying, this is not a place you'd want to run a black light over.  Unless you're into that sort of thing!

It is an okay hotel that accepts cash only. Pay in cash and expect only the basic things. Comparing with the Belnord, the beds here are better, but the rooms are smaller. The 2 twin bed rooms are pretty comfy (at least the ones I was in), and the bathrooms, while small, had a good layout. By comparison, the room with a double bed was less attractive.

Plenty of 24 hours establishments nearby in East Village. There's three Starbucks close by. And a cheap convenience store nearby that's open 24 hours on 2nd Avenue.

$110 and up.

Okay, this is probably all you need to know.  There are only 5 channels on the TV and 2 of them are porn.  You might want to bring your own sheets....and pillow....and towels.....and slippers.....actually it might be best if you can figure out a way to not touch anything at all.

In the pre-Giuliani days, this was a gay bath house posing as a health club. Now it's a hooker hangout pretending to be a hotel. In either incarnation it would be the perfect crime scene for Law & Order: SVU.
