Japanese people love lines.  When we see a line, we get in line because whatever everyone is in line for must be good, right?  The earl gray ice cream was sooooooooooooooooo good.

I don't think I"ll ever be able to rate a place I've visited a 5 just yet, but Ici comes super close.  My friend took us to try out part of the special menu.  I ordered the Earl Grey Tea ice cream.  It was super delicious!  I really wish they had containers for us to take the ice cream with us later.  The place seems pretty popular because the line was out the door when I went.

Walking into the tiny ice cream shop, you'll see the full menu written on the walls.  If you peek to the back room you can see the back room where the kitchen is and smell the heavenly aroma of the homemade ice cream cones.  The cones have sugary, crispy edges with chocolate at the bottom.  Describing the taste is making my mouth water.  It's really good.

So whenever you're in Berkeley, come find this place and have a bit of heaven :).

The outrageous line out the door can be a pain on very hot days but it's worth the wait..  Hands down the best fancy icecream in the Bay Area.
The icecream sandwiches can be a delicious, unexpected party favor as they travel well (East Bay only).  If you just want a chocolate sundae and more old school flavor choices - stick with Fentons. Otherwise, this place is The Place to go.

Absolutely the best gelato I have ever tasted.  Unique flavors such as Creme Fraiche, Burnt Caramel, Lemon Verbena and Basil.  Extra touch: the handmade waffle cones have chocolate ganache in the bottom so that the gelato doesn't drip all over the place.  Much appreciated!

Downside of this place is that the line is always long and slow-moving.  I'm pretty sure you can train monkeys to work faster.

According to my friend, this place is like an LA club - and coming into the shop after waiting in a long line only to see the inefficient way the ice cream scoopers flutter about is like entering a club after a long wait only to see the damn place is half empty.

It's true.  The staff at Ici could move things along much more quickly - it's as if they know the sight of the line serves their popularity and income, backlash be damned.

But I'm a sucker for gourmet ice cream in a way I'm not a sucker for a potentially star-studded hypefest of booty grinding.

Creamy, inventive, satisfying - and homemade cones are a lovely complement.

The line goes fast.

Yes, indeed the gelato is great and the flavors unique. But I agree with the gal that mentioned the ability to train monkeys to move faster. Luckily for them, my first time there happened to be at something like 3 in the after noon on a Wednesday when people weren't off work yet and businesses tend to be slower-- I got into the door immediately and was only the third in line. But I also recall it still being slow and there were three people behind the counter!

But unfortunately for them the last two times I went for dessert after having dinner down the street, the line was something like 20 people long and moving oh so SLOW. Not willing to wait 1/2 hour, I left both times and felt better for it.

Ici ice cream is good, but not worth the wait. The four stars are just for the ice cream, of course.

I have found another gem by landing on College Avenue in Berkeley after my hectic project from the office of Alameda County. My winter visit to Berkeley was somewhat of a failure, but with my recent visits and getting acquaintance to the city, it's getting better and better.

The two block strip has restaurants, shops and other businesses from local owners. The strip also has a striking feeling here with old timers, locals, college students and families.

Along the strip, with a full stomach and craving for a frozen treat, I've landed one of Berkeley's popular Ice Cream store. The shop serves homemade ice cream, fresh cookies and other treats, plus serves Blue Bottle Coffee made with the freshest organic ingredients. It's a cute little store with the bright lights and the ambience's nostalgia look of the 50's. "Where is the Fonz?"

The store only has twelve different flavors, but made fresh at the shop. I had the large scoop of the Chicory Cinnamon and the Malted Banana flavor combine in a sugar-cone for $4.50. The Chicory Cinnamon was very unique with the overpowering taste of the spice. And the Malted Banana was very creamy and loaded with flavors of organic bananas. That Banana flavor ice cream was so delicious and good enough to make a gorilla out of me.

I paid my treat with cash, but I'm positive that this ice cream store accepts credit cards. Using a credit card for a scoop of ice cream would be ridiculous.

Meyer Lemon still knocks my socks off.  But just some notes about some of the other flavors:

- Olive Oil:  a little weird, but good....subtle.
- Strawberry-Rhubarb sorbet:  refreshing and not too sweet.
- Lemon-Thyme Sherbet:  Crisp flavors, not necessarily good in ice cream.
- Chocolate:  delicious.
- Lemon Verbena:  tastes like either hand soap or citronella candles, I'm not sure which.  But for some reason I liked it.

Admittedly the ice cream (or rather sorbet) was indeed high quality, but I'm just not a gourmet dessert kind of person. Meaning I'm cheap. It's commendable that they have constantly changing flavors (unconventional ones too, i.e. lemon thyme?). The service was really good (you're actually served samples on silverware) if a little suspect because they were all pin-thin blonde girls for some reason. That isn't something to detract a star for. Really I just don't like the price. If it were cheaper, I would definitely be a frequenter and even try some of the AMAZING looking cakes.

One of my 'treats while i'm in berkeley' stops -  ici has these unique and deliciously rich flavors that taste very homemade and fresh.  Love their cones.   I'm a big coffee ice cream fan and their mocha/coffee flavor was super yummy.   I do have a long history with Swensen's in SF, but Ici has taken a close #2 ranking.   I also love Fentons too but Ici is a step above because their cones tastes like fresh cookies.   Portion-wise Ici scoops are a bit small but it's worth it. (plus fenton's gives you too much and last time I think i felt sick eating so much ice cream!)

I give Ici Five Big Red Strawberry and Cream Stars.
I live in Berkeley.

I'd pass by Ici night after night...
The line was so long, so massive, so airtight!
Damn the clock, no time to wait.
Could it be that good? I could only speculate.
These throngs of people-
Every age, from wheelchair to stroller.
Could any love ice cream as much as I?
No doubt, I'd have to become an Ici Patroller.

I'd heard the rumors, read the articles-
But how could it be THAT good, it's only frozen particles!
The masses, the lines, they grew and they grew-
It's June! This School ain't even in session?
I begged the Ice Cream Gods:
Please smile upon me, and stop your evil messin!

And then one beautiful Sundae, it was June 29th-
My ici wish came true,
And I got to sample all the special flavors, on tiny little spoons.
Basil, Buttermilk, Santa Rosa Plum!
How do I decide? At once I was struck dumb!

I paused and looked around with awe-
This shop, this place, its beautiful and inspiring-
I think I want to live here, are they hiring?
Like a dollhouse, its simply just too cute!
Its pink and its perfect and its edible to boot!

The pine nut praline, so creamy and deluxe-
If I'm not careful, my shirt I must untuck.
Ici, oh Ici, how I wish you would expand your size-
To accommodate the masses, the people and the lines.
But for now, I'll take my chances, bring my patience or hitch a ride-
Cause waiting in your lines, is just democracy at its prime.

Thank you for the delectable delicacies, Ici.

I've heard hype about several eateries in Berkeley. And this one TOTALLY lives up to and surpasses it.

The flavors are totally unique (basil, cardamon-rose) and they change every couple of days. This is because they make all ice cream on site, using totally fresh, organic, local ingredients and they only make enough of a flavor to last a couple of days because they don't want to use preservatives. The owner used to be the pastry chef for Chez Paniz and you can totally tell that there are gourmet roots in this store based on the ice cream.

Considering the quality of ice cream (this is the best I've tasted, even considering frozen yogurt & gelato--even gelato in Italy), it's very reasonably priced (2 people can each get 2 scoops of ice cream and one cone for $8 total). They make the cones there as well and they are dee-lish.

You mustmustmustmustmustmustmust go here if you find yourself in Berkeley during business hours.

If you build it they will come.

If you build a gourmet ice cream shop, they will come...and there will most likely be a line.

Such is Ici, a properly anagram-named ice cream store located amongst local home grown businesses.  On this particular day, the sunny California weather helped create a line trailing its way past a neighboring hair salon.  A common sight, I'm sure.  We waited patiently for 15 minutes to finally get to the front counter.

When you're waiting, the overall design and feel of Ici is charming.  Ici achieves a modern throwback to confection storefronts complete with soft-playing jazz in the background.  I really dug the store's pastel-mint colored walls and interesting insect "antennae" lights.  The seating is limited to one bench and a few tables.  The style of Ici's calligraphic cursive logo runs through the shop's interior.  Ornamental swirls help add to the "sweetness".

Once we reached the front of the line, we stood at a glass counter where two employees serve you.  The glass counter showcases "bombes", ice cream sandwiches, and other frozen treats.  Gone are the tubs of melted ice cream.  Instead the ice cream is located out of the customer's view to achieve a certain allure about just what you're going to be served.

You're not only paying for the way it tastes, but also the hard-working idealism that Ici magically conjures.  An example of this is the way they scoop their ice cream.  I ordered a two scoop cone: one part horchata, one part mint fudge swirl ($3.50).  When the cone arrives it comes wrapped in a piece of baking paper.  The scoops are incredibly spherical.  it feels as though I could stand the cone upright on the ground and hit one of the scoops with a 9-iron.  The creamy glow of the ice cream keeps me from doing this.

I was very pleased with my handheld dessert.  The horchata is light and subtle.  The mint-fudge swirl is a lot less minty than I expected, but in a good way.  Surprisingly there's a lot more fudge than mint (in a good way).  The sugary cone is extremely satisfying due to its obvious freshness.  A crispy sweet container, built to hold, built to crumble.

I tried my friend's ice cream as well.  White nectarine sorbet and bourbon vanilla.  The nectarine was crazy good.  The bourbon vanilla on the other hand, I couldn't really decipher the taste because my previous one was full of fudge.  I can bet that it was good.

The success of the ice cream is dependent on its elegant approach and ninja presentation.  Unlike Ben & Jerry's, Coldstone, and Baskin Robbins, Ici gives you something that doesn't need to be candied up in additional confections; although they offer the option.  Ici gives you exactly what they think you need without showing you the process.  The fresh baked cone fragrance in the air helps as well.

So do your taste buds a favor, and get a lickin'.

____

I'll be coming back to investigate their ever-changing daily menu long after this upcoming heat wave passes.

This is probably one of the most overrated places to get dessert in Berkeley, seriously.  I mean people are waiting in fucking line during the cold winter to get ICE CREAM, it's really stupid.  You wait in line in 50 degree weather then you top off your coldness with ice cream, makes a lot of fucking sense.

The ice cream isn't cheap either, you're better off buying like 15 gallons of dreyers or some shit with the price you pay here, okay not 15 gallons but it is still a lot of money for ice cream.  They have like some nontraditional flavors which I GUESS makes it unique but its not worth the extra money for it.  I am really shocked to see 225 reviews of 5 stars.

Go to Fentons, its better.

I've only been here once, and yes, they had about five employees who all seemed to take their time doing whatever they damn well please and creating a huge line out onto the street. It took much longer than I'd expect to get a sample. They were friendly, for sure, but so slow. I got the rose-pistachio ice cream. I gotta say, the thing that really impressed me was that they used candied pistachios! A lot of ice cream places that garnish their ice cream with pistachio use the plain salted kind, and it really clashes with the sweet sweet ice cream. The rose flavor was good too, and really, they have the cutest lil cones.

I'd probably give this place 4.5 stars just for the ice cream... Come on though, you can move faster than that.

Hmm...ice cream.  I like this better than Bi-Rite in the city.  The only downside is that the line has been long, even on work day nights.

Interesting flavors, I wouldn't think of using Irish Stout for ice cream.  But the best flavors are still the originals (strawberry and chocolate).  The ice cream cakes are pretty good, although the cake part could be a bit softer.

I am going to have babies with the honey chamomile ice cream.  We will name them honey and chamomile and people will eat them...anyways...

They give out samples so make sure you try it before you buy it.  Whenever I see peppered in a dessert title I always get excited about it and have to have it even though it's always horrible.  Yes, pepper ice cream is every bit as disgusting as it sounds!

Sub-average ice cream that is way overpriced.  Exotic flavors, they have, yes.  But the quality would not indicate that the ice cream is made in-house fresh like they advertise.  I still prefer Bi-Rite in S.F. to this wannabe gourmet ice-cream.

I took another star away for the rude emo/grunge zit-poppin punk working the cashier.  He basically called me a liar, saying I told him we had a 2-scoop when we actually ordered a 3-scoop.  No, I clearly said the first time it was a 3-scoop.  My fiancee heard me say 3-scoop. The customer next to me heard me say "3-scoop".  Why would I try to cheat you out of a lousy buck?

Not worth the wait in line. Not worth the price.

On my dessert hierarchy totem pole, ice cream is at the bottom.  Not saying that I'm a hater, I just like to bite my desserts, not lick and swallow.  (Wow, that sounded really, really wrong.)

My friends have been trying to get me to go to Ici for months.  Fiiiiine.  I finally went.  And, fiiiiiine, I give-in - Ici's ice cream is pretty darn good.

There are about a dozen flavors (they rotate/change daily) flavors at Ici, and the flavors are kind of bizarre.  Fortunately, you can sample any of them before you commit.  For somebody who's not a fan of ice cream, I'll admit that Basil ice cream is, surprisingly, pretty tasty.

But, really, the BEST part about Ici are its house-made ice cream cones. Oh. Mah. Gawd. Becky.  Melted chocolate on the inside / at the bottom of a sugar cone?!?  Oh hell yes.

When the weather is nice there are lines out the door in the evenings and all weekend long.  But as impatient as I am, you will find me there...waiting...salivating...doing the "hurry up and serve me" dance all the way up college and through the door.

You can have as many tastes as you want before you decide, which is good because with flavors such as marsala raisin, cinnamon, creamy stout, and honey-lavender, it's hard to know what to get when you are used to the ordinary...and ordinary Ici is not.

The cone costs extra, but they are house-made cones and they're so good!  Plus, once you get to the end of the cone there is a nice surprise waiting for you.  I'll leave it to you to discover it yourself.

wow.  this ice cream is incredible.   an awesome range of flavors from classics like strawberry and chocolate to crazy good and oddly delicious concoctions like yogurt (think plain lassis at an indian restaurant), basil, and saffron pistachio.   but they change all the time!

gourmet ice cream for reasonable prices!  it's possible!

yes, the line moves slow and is crazy long at peak times, but that is absolutely the only minor annoyance for one of the jewels of the bay.

Look. There really is no other option if you want a for real, satisfying ice cream treat. Stand in the line. Try the many flavors of the amazing creamy goodness. Choose a double scoop, one is not enough. Go for a freaky combo. My favs - pick peppercorn, basil, burnt caramel, pistachio. OK, it IS quite warm inside of Ici, and yes, your ice cream may start to melt down your wrist, then arm. Lick it off.

Yes, they are open tomorrow. Yes, it's a wicked addiction. No, nobody has to know. Just go, again and again. I'll see you there, but I promise to not make eye contact. Oh the delicious shame...

I really don't get what the big deal is about this place. Yes, they have interesting flavors, and some of them are pretty good. But often they just fall flat. I've found many of them to be sort of one dimensional, and the texture is often too icy.

When I was pregnant, I had to have biweekly tests at Alta Bates and this was my treat. I've tried lots of flavors, and only  a few really stand out. I did enjoy the rosewater flavor, and apricot was pretty good. Burnt caramel tasted like a camp fire. Eh, I'll take my ice cream dollars elsewhere.

I had to try Ici again to see if what I experienced the first time was really good.

Cliff Notes on my visit to Ici this week:
The line was long.
Kids (panhandling) asked me for money, I said "No English" *with an accent* and continued talking in "english" ;-)
We talked about other ice cream places (Bi-Rite, Bombay..)
We talked about kids, adopting and more.
Chocolate Ice Cream with Hot Chocolate Fudge topping 95 cents,  I still like the sugar/cream ratio.
I got one scoop,  my friend got two scoops (lemon something and strawberry something, both were really strong flavors for me)
We sat and people watched.
Killer sparrow gave her a scare.
We talked about a lot of stuff, including dating Israeli and other nationalities.
We walked around.
Annoying Indian guy driving a Prius honking his way throughout College ave,  I knew the driver was Indian (don't ask y I know)
Saw a cute store with bowls that I must see when I am around here for lunch.
We walked to a book store
Finished my ice cream, she was done with hers before we started walking.
Japanese book on paintings -- Chasen
Childrens books

So, a lot can happen when you experience an evening with a friend and both of you wanted just one thing, Ici.

I loved the company, I love the conversations, I love the sitting and talking and then the walking.  I love sharing ice cream but the two flavors she had were not for me.

Recommend: Yes
Will I go back: Yes, I would go back.
Romantic: Yes, I think sitting with your ice cream and talking is romantic.

So why 4 STARS,  I am not yet floored by this place.  I will have to try one more time.  I am still a Bombay (none Bombes) fan.

If ice cream were a drug, this is where the source is and all the dealers are waiting in line to get their fair share.  They have a different selection DAILY and prize their flavors on signs hanging from their walls.

The line is usually out the door because they 1) let you take your time taste-testing any of the flavors and 2) because it is definitely worth it.  The line is always moving and caters to everyone waiting.  I even called once to see what time they were closing and they said if we hurried, they would take whoever is still in line.

Believe it or not, their ice cream sandwiches are to die for.  I opt for the toasted coconut.   Many people over look this item but it's one to def. try.

Other things to note are that they sell by the quart and pint as well and can mix two flavors in a container.  I think sometimes it's a better bargain at that decision.   Remember, it's like a drug.  Fresh, quality home-made taste.

After passing through the neighborhood a few weeks ago and noticing the line at Ici we decided we'd go back and give it a try sometime.  Yesterday we had friends visiting and decided to all go try it out.  While I can't give it 5 stars - didn't like the cone and the wait was 30 minutes (what were we thinking?!), the ice cream itself was good.  I especially enjoyed the lemon-boysenberry flavor.  I won't be rushing out to have it every day, I'll likely stop by again and see what new yummy combinations they have come up with.

This place was well worth the wait in a sea of moms and tots looking for an afternoon sugar fix. The flavors are unique and flavorful. Both my friend and I tried a couple before we ordered. The woman who helped us was extremely patient as we dabbled in basil, apricot, and other neat concoctions. By the way, the basil ice cream is surprisingly tasty, this fact also reiterated by a 9 year old boy waiting in line.

In the end I went with the honey-nutmeg ice cream and was not disappointed with my choice. It is the first ice cream that my buds haven't habituated to in the first couple bites. Every lick was just as good as the first, even getting better as I whittled away through the crunchy hand-made cone.

I highly recommend this place for anyone looking for something a little bit different than the traditional neopolitan spectrum of flavors. It's fun to take the family (or just your friends) and try otherwise seemingly crazy flavors that leave your buds craving more.

A friend and I had about 30 minutes to kill in Berkeley and she suggested we go to Ici. Boy I'm glad she did. After a bit of a wait, we looked at the list of the day's flavors and decided to taste the weirdest ones. Peach Habanero was sweet, tart, and surprisingly "wish I had  some milk" spicy (I'm a spicy wuss though), but I ended up going with the Roasted Pistachio-Black Pepper! I'm a sucker for anything with pistachios in it (even the odd "pistachio" ice cream at Baskin Robbins), and I got really into finding a little spicy black pepper bit with every lick. What a flavor!

Oh, and pay the extra mula for the handmade cone. It's sooooo gooooood.

The first time I went there I swear it must have been a miracle, there were maybe two people in line, thats right, I walked straight into the place when I was standing at the end of the line, it was amazing. Ever since, no such luck. But that's the beauty of privately owned home-town spots. When it's good, the whole neighborhood (and their distant cousins) know it.

Everyday the flavors are different, they have hand rolled cones with a lovely little chocolate surprise in the bottom, so wonderful. The Cinnamon/Oatmeal is to die for, as well as cookies 'n cream and well, most likely everything else :)

Next time I'm in there I have pre-decided on one of their delectable looking Ice Cream Sandwiches. I'll just assume its a 5-Star YUMMM!

"Aw dis place look a soooo cute!" Fiona said enthusiastically as we parked in an expired meter and realized we had absolutely NO change to put in! Chinese coins don't work either. Oy!

Anyways, we waited for about 10 minutes, chatting with three Israelis about how cute their daughter was and that "Lo, that red looking ice-cream is not strawberry, it's rhubarb." They DO have cherry chocolate chip, which was great. I ended up odering a scoop of the Honey-Lavender, and it was so effin' well-rounded, I was scared I was going to be tasting lavender potpourri in my mouth for days to come. No, it was sweet, balanced, and creamy to the core. Then, because clearly one scoop is never enough, especially when you know you have a savory lunch to look forward to, I had a scoop of the Meyer Lemon. Tart and delicious. Way to go. Next time, I'm trying their little ice cream sandwiches.

Damn you Los Angeles, get some better ice cream!

I tried really hard to not devour my ice cream/ice cream cone within the first 2 minutes of it being handed to me.  Trust me, it took a lot of self control!

We got here on a nice sunny sunday evening to get dessert.  We had a bit of a wait, as the line was out the door and down a couple shop-lengths.  When we finally got closer to the counter, we saw the flavor list/other items.  I have previously tried the ice cream sandwiches, so I opted for a scoop on a cone.  [The earl gray and meyer lemon ice creams were absolutely delightful in the 2 types of ice cream sandwiches.  I don't even like ice cream sandwiches, but they  were awesome.]  Anyways, I was in the mood for a fruity flavor, so we got up to the counter and I gave the peach-habanero sorbet a try, which was good, with a slight kick at the end.  However I wanted an ice cream texture, so I ordered the saffron-orange blossom on a hand made cone.  DROOOOL!  It was so good.  I don't really know what flavor saffron is, but it sure tasted good with the orange!

As we happily enjoyed our ice cream outside the shop (it gets very crowded in there), we felt like we were 5 yrs old who just got a treat from the ice cream truck on a summer day all over again.  And the best part of the cone.... there's chocolate at the tip!  And it's the perfect consistency, like the chocolate of a freshly baked chocolate chip cookie...  So the delicious-ness lasts the entire ice cream cone, from top to bottom.  I definitely recommend this place, if you are near the berkeley area.

Came here again for some ice cream after eating sushi across the street. Had the cinnamon flavor and DAMN was it good.

The cone is still amazing, also!

Friendly service, with a really cute asian girl behind the counter!

This place is a MUST!

Did it even exist?  Or did I only imagine the divinity that was honey nutmeg ice cream from Ici.  Oh how I dream of it's return.  WHERE IS THE HONEY NUTMEG ICE CREAM?

Some flavors are wonderful, some are less so...but obviously you can taste and see.  This is the best ice cream around, but until the return of honey nutmeg I'm sticking to the practically perfect vanilla.

Gngngn, Bi-Rite comparisons are inevitable, right?  I got a dark chocolate/earl grey ice cream sandwich.  The first bite was like a warm, starry summer night, and the second bite was also fantastic, but shortly afterward I was struck by some feelings of doubt.  Did I really just pay $4.25 for something that I could get for 50 cents at Safeway?  Is it really that good?  Am I a food snob?  Is my whole life a lie?  It took me three-quarters of the sandwich to convince myself that, no, it truly was a near-perfect ice cream sandwich.

The first time I was at Bi-Rite i got roasted banana ice cream and there was no doubt--only joy, from the first bite to the last.

A year ago I lived across the street on College Avenue.  I haven't been back to Ici since then.  Why you ask? Is there stuff that bad?  Did you eat so much during the year you lived there that you're deathly afraid of it now?

NO.  It's because every time I go there, THERE IS A LINE OUT THE DOOR AND DOWN THE STREET.  Would you PEOPLE STOP GOING THERE PLEASE.  Or at least choose one day where the wait will not be ridiculously long and send me the memo (via text, email, pigeon, anything)

That being said the ice cream's not bad :) Very interesting and unique flavors.  Anyone tried a bombe (spelling) before?
