I'd been meaning to try Village Bakery for a long time, but for some reason never got around to it. Anyhoo, darling Sheirin suggested it for lunch and was I glad she did!
Village just might end up being my exclusive pizza joint for my last few months in Davis :) Absolutely delicious thin crust pizza! I usually leave pizza crust rinds behind, but I just devoured the crust of Village's pizza. It was too yummy to leave on the plate!
Eat there, love it, and thank me later for pointing you in the direction of Village for an afternoon slice of pizza pie (instead of the not as yummy Woodstock's a block away).

Glad to see that they have hired more people to work at Village Bakery. The wait for pick up isn't long. However, I have recently discovered Greek Symposium's pizza, which is the reason why I haven't been to Village Bakery for the past few months.
I think the only thing I don't like about Village Bakery pizzas are the fact that they're thin crust... I prefer a thicker and heartier pizza. But that is my personal preference. My partner and I alone are able to finish a full box of one of their special pizzas ($16+tax).

Their pizza is great. I usually don't like thin pizzas, but here I will make the exception. The… Read more »
This place has fabulous breads, really top notch. And then there is the pizza.....Thin crust, fresh toppings, always excellent to take away by the slice or the whole pie. The pesto is good and you can have it mixed with the red sauce. This is the best veggie pizza around.
Just don't expect it to be delivered on time. Not sure what they are doing, maybe partying instead of pizza-ing, but they are a nice bunch regardless. Just call it in and pick it up!
Best pizza in town. NYC style. Only other place in town that is close is that Greek place. If you go over to Sac, there's more choices (Zeldas and Giavonnai). End of the day, Sac is too far and Village Bakery is more than good enough for the Davis area.
Can you review a bakery if you only go in to get a cup of coffee while you wait for the train? Well I can for I am Hunter, yelper of bakeries and stuff.
I asked for a cappuccino then cased the joint. It's about as big as my bedroom and has a few desserts behind the glass and about four shelves of bread on the wall behind the counter. Funny thing, I couldn't smell any bread. ??? It looked good but shouldn't fresh baked bread give off the aroma of... fresh bread. I thought that was weird.
Then I got my coffee. Have you ever stared at some bird poop on the ground for about 30 seconds and then closed your eyes and seen the negative impression. You know, like a photo negative. No? Well try it and you'll know what my cap looked like. That happens when you fill the cup with milk first and then pour the shot of espresso in. It doesn't look pretty. And who does that? It's espresso first then milk foam, people.
But I'm being overly critical. It didn't taste bad and I didn't even try what they are best known for-- the bread. The "Now comes in unscented" bread.

This is some good pizza made better by my friends who accompany me to this tiny oasis of yum in the midst of downtown Davis lunch-time mediocrity.

I don't know why anybody would eat pizza from anywhere else in Davis. I guess cost could be a deterrent - each pizza costs at least $15. Delicious crust, fabulous combination of toppings, yum!
best. pizza. ever.
sometimes i find myself ready to drive from the bay area for a slice of their delicious pizza pies.
they always have slices of pepperoni or cheese, but if you're really smart you'll go for their veggie pizzas, which usually have some delicioulsy unique selection of vegetables or goat cheese or something tantalizing. prices are beyond reasonable, although since its NY style, it takes two slices for me to call it a meal.
The pizza here is delicious. The crust is so warm and soft. My slice of pepperoni cost me $2.50. Not a bad deal considering the high quality.
Pizza: Always great; feta and vegetables always served. The pepperoni is sometimes switched for a sausage or salami; that warms my heart.
dough: Yes, if you get the right person at the counter or on the phone, and they're not overly busy, you can get dough, which you can roll out yourself and do as you like. It will continue to rise, so use it fast! Or you can let it rise a bunch, punch it down partially, mix in olive oil and herbs, and bake it into a focaccia. This is also excellent.
Breads: sliced french and sourdough are much better than anyone else's. Oblong sandwich rolls are perfect- when toasted they are crunchy on the outside and fluffy on the inside.
coffee: O so spotty. Some get the double espresso right, some make me cry. It shouldn't be this difficult or inconsistent.
I hate Village Bakery. I have gained at least 10 pounds eating their bread. I once ate two loaves of asiago bread in one afternoon! OMG, I really have to control myself when I see their bread. Five stars.
Best bakery in Davis and worth the drive from Sacramento. The pizza, breads, and pastries are all delicious. They also have a booth at the Davis farmer's market on Wed and Saturdays. Do not pass this place up.

I won't even try to compare pizza from Village to the other offerings in Davis. To me, they are completely different creatures. Heats up just fine the next day, too.
The pizza here is excellent although it is extremely oily. It takes about 15 minutes to cook so the wait isn't too long. The bread here is great, as well but the selection is small by the end of the day. With a good homemade pasta, the bread certainly goes a long way. Although some Nugget stores offer Village Bakery bread, it is always best from the source.
The only true problem with such fresh bread is that it does tend to spoil quickly. It lasts only a few days sitting on the counter or in the cupboard.

Pizza is awesomely delicious! ANY one of them.
Be warned though. I called for take once, it was a 45 minute wait for the pizza. I get there 5 minutes early to check to see if it would be finished early, but if not I could always just hang out there. I find that the pizza wasn't even made yet.
I'm sure that only happens at peak hours though.

cheap pizza! fresh...well at least kinda fresh since they make the pizza as people order it and it sits inside this little window thing.
I stopped by one morning to grab breakfast before my train home and had the most amazing chocolate croissant. It was like 79 cents or something really cheap, and the guy working was really friendly too. I have heard great things about their pizza too and it's my goal to try that before I graduate!
Best bread and Pizza in town! Try the walnut bread if there is any left in the store. Use it for cheese fondue. You won't regret it...
The only reason I gave it a four was because I heard some rumblings that the owner is not always nice to his employees.

Their pizza is the best in Davis. Two slices and a bottle of milk and you're set for lunch. Just be sure you don't want anything more than cheese on your pizza or you'll have to wait a while for them to make one

Phenomenal Pizza!!!!!
'Nuff said!
This is where informed pizza conniseurs visit in Davis. Contrary to popular belief, the minature single slices served at Woodstock's are not the best slice in town. The best slices come from Village Bakery!
I'm still waiting for somebody to bring New York style pizza to Davis though... big floppy and greasy is my favorite kind of pizza.

Excellent breads, pastries, and, of course, pizza! My favorite is the artichoke pizza. This place reminds me of Pie in the Sky in Berkeley. Both are great places to grab a bite before or after a train ride.

I'm now living in Boston, where there is a pizza shop on every corner, but I still dream about the slices at Village Bakery. I'm not saying that I haven't found better pizza in Boston, but it's rare-- and none of the good pizza in Boston allows a view of coming and going trains like VB does.

You must find out why people line up waiting for the fresh pizzas during lunchtime. They can't make these goodies fast enough! Also the fresh breads are tasty and the variety/selection is quite diverse. I love the jalapeno cheese bread. The basic pugliese or ciabatta is good too.

Great pizza. It's a must, whether embarking or disembarking from Amtrak, to grab at least one slice. They also do great breads. I like the little loaves the serve up, in the garlic asiago or jalapeno cheddar varieties. Insanely good.

Carbs be damned. village bakery makes the best bread in all of davis. its no wonder most restaurants and shops get their dough from here. definitely a must eat if youre in town.
This place is a tiny hole in the wal- there are maybe two or three tiny tables in the actual store, but not to worry, there is excellent outdoor seating, but good luck if it's a cold day. The atmosphere- incredibly laid back, and clearly "local" give this place an extra half star.
The pizza is...really indescribable. It's hard to pinpoint the influence- it's got the doughiness and greasiness of the Fat Slice/Blondies persuasion, but the sauce is closer to New York style, and it's certainly tastier and of a higher quality that either Fat Slice or Blondies. It is much better than Woodstocks, which monopolizes the Davis pizza market and people brag about- it's really not all that great. But that's for another review.
I must first disclose, my girlfriend works here, so I am often treated to a free lunch.
Best pizza in town hands down. Miles away from Woodstocks, beats the hell out of the crap they have in the DC, don't even get me started on Papa Johns. That being said, the pizza does have some room for improvement, it's nothing like the 'New York Style' they advertise it as, but that doesn't mean its not good. To make up for it, they have some of the best breads I've had in Davis. The staff is also some of the most ridiculously awesome people ever (not just my girlfriend).
In comparison to Round Table, Woodstock's and PIzza Guys the VB definitely has the best pizza and at a reasonable price. Love the crust, cheest rocks. Only complaint would be some occasional excessive oil/grease, but it never makes the crust soggy.
Highly recommend this place if you want pizza in davis.
Best pizza, bread you can buy in Davis. Nice location for Amtrak commuters. Mediocre coffee.
