Neighborhood: Brooklyn/Cobble HillOh, the Chip Shop. I love this place like a fat kid loves... fried macaroni & cheese balls. I am dead serious. I go to this place, not for the fantastic fish and chips (worth going for), but for the GENIUS that is fried macaroni and cheese. If I have a heart-attack at 30, everyone on Yelp will know why. But damn it, it will be worth it. Also - they have a fried twinkie (don't make that face) for dessert that is, quite possibly, the grossest (come on, it's a Twinkie. FRIED.) and most delicious thing ever. Also, they play a lot of old British music, which just ads to the "it's ok that everything here is fried, it's British!" vibe.

Yummm.
I got your standard fish and chips and some kind of beer the waitress recommended.
The beer was smother than any I have had before, in fact it kind of had the consistency of melted ice cream. The tarter sauce was great. I really love fish and chips and I eat them maybe once every other month despite the stomach aches all the grease gives me. So you can imagine how elated I was that my tum tum was in perfect working order when I left.
Our waitress was really nice and helpful although not that attentive. Then this other guy who I'm guessing was the manager brought us our bill and addressed me by my name and then proceeded to go on a 5-7 minute rant about some girl who works theres name being Risa, how great she was, she writes jingles for something or another (it got to be a bit over kill).
All the posters and music added to the ambiance, rockers vs. mods.
I'll be back!

FISH & CHIPS. Best thing.. One large piece of fresh tender fish dipped in a great blatter and fried to perfection on top of huge fries for $10.50
FRIED MACARONI & CHEESE BALL. It's like a huge baseball. Nice crunchy outer layer was the best part. The mac itself, I found a lil bland and lacking taste. Everyone agreed that it could be cheesier or have a more stronger tastier cheese. $4.00
FRIED TWINKIE for dessert is da bomb! I just wish it came with 2 twinkies like in the twin packet u buy in the store. Non greasy. The frying just made the already sponge cake warm with a lil crunch. The cream inside oozed in my mouth. Served over a berry sauce. $3.00
ONION MASHED POTATOES. It had good flavor but I didn't like the grittiness.
Fizzy Ribena soda was great. You can really taste black currant. Better than the ones you get from ur local bodega but wish it came w/ free refills.
Excellent service from our waitress!
The only neg thing was the food took long to come out but the wait was ok b/c the perfectly fried fish made up for it.

I agree with some of the reviewers below.
Most of the waitstaff at this place (bartender, hostess ...) weren't great on service. Our particular server (a young woman with glasses) was very friendly and nice, but the rest of the staff seemed too cool for school.
The beers were excellent, but the fish and chips just average. The chips in particular weren't great.
The atmosphere's definitely tourist trap-ish and kitschy, as some of the reviewers have noted.
Tacky decor, mediocre food, even more mediocre service, but great beers.

Tasteless and overpriced. The staff is even a little rude. There have to be better fish n' chip sort of places around. I can't name one -battered fried fish isn't a food that I regularly seek. But when I do have that guilt inducing craving, I will not be coming here. This place is way over hyped. Not recommended. (Even though I did thoroughly enjoy eating the cold soggy left overs a few days later---but that's mostly because I was famished and desperate at the time...)

I barely heard about this place a week ago and decided to try it out. I was expecting a fast food chip place for some reason and was pleasantly surprised that it was really nice.
The food was a little pricey but worth it. The chips and baked macaroni and cheese were fantastic. The fish was OK, I have had better.
I will definitely be going back to this place for some more food. Also, I am a avid salad lover, unlike most, but their granny smith salad looked really yummy. That will be on my list of things I am going to try there.
My friend tried the ginger beer. I had a sip and it was tasted pretty good. I would recommend at least trying it.

On atmosphere, they deliver. My kind of fried fish...no.
And I know I was asking for it when I wondered aloud if they had any lite beers, but darn it, I just want to drink responsibly.
* Accessibility note: yes, with friends. It's a couple of hops up.

The Chip Shop has fallen on hard times as of late. The quality of the food is in deep decline, the wait staff is less friendly and a bit more down to business than 2 years ago and mice run rampant through the dining area (not a joke) but let's be honest, it doesn't fucking matter - this is the Chip Shop.
Here's what's still good - Fried Haddock. Fried Mars Bar.
Here's what used to be good - The Chips. What happened? The Chips here used to be amazing and plentiful. Now I get a noticeably smaller portion most of which are runty and burnt. The Wait Staff. There were a couple girls who used to work here 2 years ago that were super friendly, sweet and attentive and made it feel like a pub atmosphere. Then everyone left and a new manager entered the fold. Now the wait staff is 'serviceable' but acts more like this place is a tourist trap than a neighborhood Pub. What I loved about this place a few years back was the neighborhood Pub feel, that's what allowed me to overlook the mice running through my legs.
Here's what sucks now - Wild Mushroom Mac & Cheese. This used to be awesome, now it's literally swimming in it's own murky juice/water like substance and the cheese leaves something to be desired.
Here's what always sucked - Fried Pizza. I was probably the first customer to order this the day they put it on the menu. It's a frozen Elio's slice microwaved and dropped into a deep fryer. Sounds great right? Well unfortunately somewhere in the process the sauce dissipates and what you're eating is a fried piece of bread with cheese on top. Terrible.
Here's what's awesome and always will be - The Beer. As always, a terrific beer selection, beats out most bars in the area. I like to get 4 half pints and try 4 different types of beer at once.
In conclusion I sill recommend this place, where else can you get a great piece of Fried Haddock and a terrific pint of beer with a Fried Mars Bar on the side? Chip Shop's just not for the faint of heart or those scared of rodents or worried about their health.

I came here the other night with my roommate for a bite to eat before hitting the pubs. It was loud and crowded(... louded?) but still felt comfortable and inviting. The beer is a bit expensive, but they do have a fantastic selection of UK'nian brews. The food was great. I mean, It's really difficult to eff up fried fish, but these folks obviously know what their doing. I dunno if I'd put ChipShop on my list of places to go for a romantic dinner (::sigh:: romance), but I'm definitely going to come back with a group of friends before a big nite out on Atlantic (::sigh:: friends).

Pricey for what it is and the decor is incredibly corny. The batter they use on the fish and chicken tastes like funnel cake dough and is not my thing at all. The chips are pretty good but nothing spectacular. The beer selection is great but the pints are overpriced. Service is friendly but distracted and slow.
I'm not a huge fan of the ChipShop, and it doesn't seem authentic whatsoever, at least when compared to the real chip shops I went to when I lived in England. But I'm sure we'll go back because it's very close and reasonably unique for the neighborhood.

The Chip Shop is a great English pub with a fairly large selection of great beers on tap (Tetley's, Young's, Old Speckled Hen, Fuller's... as well as a few great stateside beers: Brooklyn, Arrogant Bastard...). The menu had a number of English pub dishes like kidney pie, bangers & mash, full english breakfast. But I had my mind set on getting the fish and chips. It did not disappoint. Wonderfully crispy on the outside, tasty fish on the inside. Good chips too. Well worth a trip if you are anywhere close within downtown Brooklyn.

The beer battered fish is crispy and delicious. The mushy peas are comforting. Start the meal with fried mac-n-cheese or a salad, if you're being good. After filling up on steak and kidney pie or chicken curry and chips, try on one of the fried desserts or treacle pudding.
Ordered from them plenty of times. Surprisingly good but order the plaice, not the cod or--dear god, it's not a real fish--haddock. Also: shepherd's pie is not to be believed. It's that great.
Appearance over reality. Food: My fish and chips certainly looked exemplary enough, recalling dim recollections of English fish and chips proper, but tasted, frankly, bland. Atmosphere: the Chip Shop has purchased the "English kitsch" bar decor set, much like an Irish pub buys hollowed-out copies of James Joyce novels and related Auld Sod iconography. It's a gimmick, a ploy: you don't really love England, do you Mr. ChipShop? I feel used and sad. And yes, I'll have another Blackthorne cider from the tap, please.

I'm seriously disappointed to see that so many people seemed to have a mediocre experience! I went two nights ago and absolutely loved it. Varied menu of traditional fare from the British Isles. My husband got the fish (haddock) and chips. I hate fried fish but this was delish-- crispy, crunch exterior and firm, mild fish inside. The chips were also terrific. I had the welsh rarebit w/ salad. I was stymied by the portions. Everything should read (for 2). The rarebit sauce was served over a nicely toasted brioche and a juicy ripe tomato slice on top. That would've been plenty, but there was a whole plate of salad on the side. It was a nice salad, good mesclun lettuce and veggies, but really no dressing to speak of... didn't have much flavor. So that's why I'm giving my experience 4 stars instead of 5.
The beer selection on tap is dynamite, everything can come in a half pint (sample more!) and a snakebite was offered right on the menu. A little too kitsched out with the Brit goodies on the walls for my taste, and the music was a lot louder than I would've liked, but after a beer it didn't matter so much. I lived in Manchester for a year, and while it didn't look like this, it tasted like this and it was nice to have that familiar flavor! I'll absolutely be Yelping next week about my next dining experience there!

This is a great spot if you are into British grub. Excellent selection of beers on tap including several English favorites like Fullers, Tetleys, etc. Friendly staff. Yes the food is deep fried and greasy but is unique and really hits the spot. The place is adorned with U.K. paraphernalia...and its not hard to imagine you are in some London pub.
Definately worth checking out.
A friend and I stopped by just for the fried Twinkie and fried snickers. It is, pretty much, everything you would expect it to be. Very good, very greasy... something you should do once. And then never again.
I would really like to come back for a drink with friends. The place had a cool atmosphere, and the menu looked great for food.
So the owner used to be a chef at A Salt and Battery. He's since been featured on TV for deep frying twinkies. You can bring anything here and they will deep fry it for you. Last Sunday, I was there and a customer was talking about frying a Junior's cheesecake slice. Sounds so bad, it has to be good.
Their beer selection is better than most London pubs I've been to (maybe that isn't saying much), but it's a great selection.
I do like their Sheperd's Pie and Mac and Cheese--and they have been voted for best fish and chips in NYC.
In short, always a great place to go with a few friends or on your own.
The kitchen is always open until close (11pm during the week).
Oh my, well what can I say that hasn't been said? Bring in something, smile and bat your lashes and they'll deep fry it (within reason). Try the twinkies. Holy COW they're amazing.

Fish and chips is a guilty pleasure for me. When done properly, the dish can be sublime. When done wrong, it can be a rubbery, greasy mess. The food is cheap but inconsistent. The first time we went several years ago the fish and chips were amazing. The second time we went several weeks ago the same dish was mediocre. I wanted it to be so much more, especially since this place has such a reputation for being the real deal. The service was pretty weak as well. The consolation is that this is the only place I know of that serves deep fried snickers bars. No matter how disgusting it sounds, they are really good, if not overly sweet. Four stars for the food and beer but less one star for poor service and inconsistency.

A classic English chipper, and a personal favorite of mine! I had eaten once at their Park Slope locale and when they opened a second shop to cater to downtown Brooklyn, naturally, I was stoked, and I've been a regular customer since.
The place is a rectangular English pub. It's sparsely decorated with memorabilia from the UK, and typically plays good music of a British bent, and shows soccer or whatever other commonwealth based sporting event might be on at the time. They sport an admirable selection of brews on tap, including (you guessed it) some good English beers like Boddington's, etc.
The food's great, and obviously leans heavily on the time honored English technique of deep frying everything. The fish is lovely, haddock or cod or whiting, or whatever you like will come out perfectly moist, with a light breading that's just right - not to bready, but holds up to the knife & fork enough so that it doesn't just tear off of the fish. And the chips are, as they say here "bloody lovely" - big half moon style jobs. I also really dig their pies - steak & onion or chicken & mushroom are both great.
They also deliver until midnight. Bonus.

Yummy....Fish, Chips and Beer on Draft. Oh yes Chip Shop you are so bad for me but I love thee so much. My mouth waters for the taste to bite into your lightly greasy flaky fish texture and the yumminess of the malt vinegar that I cover you with, oh and did I mention the crispy chips that also get douched in vinegar too. So good!!! The beers are fantastic and they have so many varieties to choose from.
Haven't tried the fried candy bars since I haven't been able to eat anymore after sharing the regular fish n chips with friends. My heart doesn't thank me but my belly and palate say HELL YEAH!.

The problem with the Chip Shop is that you're gonna smell like the Chip Shop if you eat in or you're gonna get lousy fish and chips if you're gonna get it delivered. Otherwise have a pint and enjoy your grease bath.

The Atlantic Chip Shop is ok as long as you don't get it delivered. The waitstaff is kind and efficient. I think they dim the lights ever so slightly to tell them the food is ready and that is a little annoying. However over all the fish is quality and well deep fried.
I have a problem with The Chip Shop when I've had delivery. Its not about the service, they have always been punctual and accurate. I think the problem is that fried food does not travel well when it is wrapped. The fries and fish get soggy.
I'd give the shop a 4 but because the take out is soo poor I give them a 3 overall.

Here's what I miss about England: Fish & Chips, Cider, Pasties, Scones, and Clotted Cream. While the Chip Shop doesn't offer scones, cream, or pasties (you'll have to go to Tea & Sympathy for those), it has the Fish & Chips sewn up, and it has great cider (if you like yours a little dry and slightly sweet).
I've been searching for good F&C since leaving those far away shores and, I must say, the English must be keeping the secret to great F&C to themselves, because it's very hard to find here in America. I almost wrote the Chip Shop off due to their bland Cod. Then I tried the Haddock - so good! And the Plaice is wonderful. The chips, if you ask them to be done a little crispier, are some of the best in town.
After mastering the good fish, I moved on to such wonderfulness as fried mac & cheese and fried pizza. Fry everything, Chip Shop, and I will eat it!

UGh, they advertise the deep fried pizza, so I had to get it.
basically, they get a slice of pizza from down the block - and deep fry it. The thing is that the slice is sooooo grease filled, the crust is soaked with grease. At my table there were 2 of 5 people willing to try it. To nobody's surprise, I was one of the people to eat it and to no one but my own's surprise, I felt really queasy afterwards.
Ahh, the rest of the fare was fair at best. We did order some awesome sounding dishes, the shepherds pie, 2 types of whitefish and chips, yeah yeah... but you are cut off chipshop. Oh the grease! I cannot bring myself in your establishment again.
The waitresses were a lovely british variety, and friendly as fuck. The atmosphere was straight on. My apologies though, I will have to leave my tasting of the english food fare someplace else. Thanks for the good times chipshop, I must move on.

The allure of fried food! The Atlantic Chip Shop, sister to the famous Park Slope Chip Shop, is home of the deep fried fare: fish, chips, maccaroni, twinkies and mars bars. Prices are reasonable and the waitstaff pleasant. The Stilton salad with its granny smith apples and overabundance of blue cheese is a healthier alternative to the deep friend but you'd be crazy not to try the chips and gravy at least once. They've got a great selection of beers on tap and are close to both the 2/3, 4/5, R and F trains. Popular with Brooklyn Law students.

this place is really a 3.5 but i'll round up for the cheap prices. i was super excited to come here because i love fried food. i definitely recommend ordering the kids portions which at $5 are half the price of regular dishes and actually more than enough food for big adult eaters. my friend & i split kid-sized portions of fish (cod) & chips, fish (plaice) & chips, grandma's mac (w/sausage), & meaty mac (beef).
the fish & chips here are good, fresh (piping hot!), but a little bland. i salted and vinegared everything on my plate. the plaice tastes a little less bland than the cod but it's also a little mushier - depends on which type you prefer i guess. the mac is also on the bland side, with the meaty mac, which tasted like hamburger helper + macaroni, being the better of the two mac dishes we ordered. however, i am a big fan of mac & cheese with crispy tops, so i was pretty satisfied.
for dessert, we ordered the rhubarb crumble w/custard & the fried mars bar. the custard was hot & the rhubarb tart, making for a pretty good dish. the mars bar tasted exactly as expected - and honestly, what's not to love?
we were stuffed at the end of the meal. i would definitely come here again and get more kids dishes. seriously, there must be some fat british kids floating around out there!
