After a bad experience trying to buy a couch online, I decided to check out 9th St. Designer Clearance. Jerome took me all around the store, but I didn't see too many things that fit what I was looking for. At first, I thought Jerome was a bit pushy, but he really was listening and trying to find something that I would like. I found one sectional that I thought might work, but I needed to think about it. When I called back a few days later, Michael offered to set up a delivery for that same day! I wanted to come and check it out once more, so I asked if I could come by in a few days (I had a hectic schedule and didn't think I could come sooner). Michael offered to stay after closing so I could come by that night. I was a little hesitant at first, but decided to take him up on his offer. He let me take my time and made sure that it was what I wanted without pushing -- even though it was way after closing time! I didn't realize that they didn't accept credit cards and, since I rarely use checks, all I had on me was $10 in cash to be able to hold the couch until I could get the money -- he accepted that without any problem. He was also willing to take a post-dated check when the couch was delivered, but I wasn't comfortable with that. I've never heard of people doing business this way and so I was terribly suspicious (especially after just getting burned in another store), but they really were everything they said they were. I even came by once more with a friend to show the couch to her, and both Jerome and Michael greeted me and were very friendly, even though the sale was already made (i.e., no need to keep shmoozing).
The delivery was fast and easy and I couldn't be happier with my new couch -- it is gorgeous and looks perfect in my living room (see picture). They even had a brand new one that was identical to the floor model and offered to give me that one -- it arrived in its original packaging and was in mint condition.
They are the real deal. -

I would caution anyone from buying here: these guys are hustling inauthentic goods as designer items.
I bought what I thought was an Eames recliner and ottoman from Jerome and Michael at 9th Street Designer Clearance. Both of them assured me that it was a licensed Herman Miller product "The same as you would get at Room & Board". I distinctly remember Jerome telling me that the shipment from the factory was 'On its way to a store that had just closed their doors.' Of course, in hindsight this sounds like hooey but I believed them. Why not with all the good reviews here on Yelp.
They also had a photos and prices from the R&B site posted near the chairs (for both the recliners and Eames office chairs) My chair and ottoman look correct at first view but the seat/ottoman cushions don't zip-out and they are not AS cushy as the real deal. I should have known better than to trust them but as so many reviews say here they are great sales folks...
In this case, Caveat Emptor are still the words of the day. -

I drove across town at 11:15AM on a Thursday and the shop was closed. That's annoying.

After spending many a precious hour at high-end furniture stores in SOMA, 9th Street Designer Clearance is a godsend. Jerome was super helpful in helping us pick out a new living room set that perfectly matched our space & aesthetic. But of course the amazing thing was the quality vs. the price...having spent far too much $$ at SOMA Sofa & the like, I was prepared for the worst....but the prices were more than reasonable, especially for what we got.

Incredibly sketchy. I would not buy from them under any circumstance.

If I don't have an incentive to decorate my living space I won't; plus I'm a poor graduate student. Thus when this place popped up as a Yelp Deal I thought, "Sweet, 200 dollars worth of furniture for just $100?" and jumped on it. I was able to cash in on my coupon a couple of months ago when I was in the city.
I will use my 5+ years of Yelp cred to stress: this place is legit. I say so upfront because, honestly, in the days leading up to my visit to the store I started garnering some serious skepticism. Their website had virtually no helpful information about the inventory of the store, and a closer look at the many 5-star reviews revealed some super vague narratives from dubious unprolific writers. I had doubts about my investment. That said, once I stepped into the showroom, my worries were quelled when I met the down-to-earth manager, Michael. Like others have said, he's not pushy, just a real person willing to assist his customers in getting the best deal possible.
In terms of inventory, there are pieces for every room in your house here. Stylistically the selection is a bit random (some "Asian"-inspired furniture, "retro" stuff, and minimalist pieces to name a few), but because of that there's likely something for everybody. Whether or not this will be within your price range depends, though the store claims to beat its competitors hands down for similar merchandise. Apparently there is a type of well-known ergonomic office chair sold here for what I want to say is like $200 less than anywhere else. Can't remember the name right now, but that's what they were saying.
Because of my budget I wasn't able to walk out with the $600 comfy armchair I coveted, but with Michael's help I was able to purchase one (setless) leather chair meant for a dining room set for $100, and a minimalist silver office lamp for the last $100. Now my bedroom is super conducive to studying!
Definitely go to Michael directly if you have a Yelp Deal--he'll hook you up. And even if you don't have the coupon, give him your business simply because he works super hard ("every day of my life!" in his own words). -

I came in today, because I i bought a yelp deal for this store. I came in because had been putting it off, and then I decide to come today... of course i get caught in the Folsom Street Fair traffic. I almost decided to turn around. Thank God I didn't! Michael was super helpful. I told him my style, and what I was looking for. He pointed me in the right direction. Many of the pieces are modern with the chrome trimmings (not my style) but Micheal led me to more traditional pieces... Of course, I loved what he showed me! Great prices, too.
If you are looking to furnish your apartment, I would definitely recommend stopping by and taking a look. You will find great pieces, but make sure you look at every nook and cranny, you might miss something!
I will definitely be back. :O) -

Super Amazing Store, if your looking for any piece of furniture that is out of your price range, check out this place!!! I have been looking at velvet headboard/beds online and in other store and the ones I really liked seemed to be at least 1500 dollars and up.
So one day I was grabbing a coffee at Peets across the street, and decided to gomive this store a try!! Throughout the entire store I found nothing I felt I needed or was my style, then as I approached the second room there is was! The velvet headboard I had been looking at!!!
The furntiture does not have the price listed, so I asked I believe the owner how much, and he told me $399!!!
How could I pass up this deal?
Unforturatly I was about to move and did not not have a place to store or move the bed/headboard. The guy then told me I could put down a little deposit (20 dollars) and he would hold it till I moved!!! So we sat down to put the deposit, and I picked up the list of prices of everything in the store and to my suprise the headboard/bed was priced at 899 originally (already discounted price)!! I could not believe my lick at all!
So if your looking for something, and I mean anything, you may never know but they just might have it!!!!! As I know I will defiently go back if I ever need anything else!!!
The only reason I am docking a star, is delivery is 150 dollars in sf, and I just felt it was way to much, and wished there was some cheaper price for closer and not just sf as a whole (my new place was within 10-12 blocks I believe) -

Awesome! My husband and I went downtown to purchase speakers at the House of Music, and as we were leaving I noticed 9th Street Designer Clearance across the street. We recently bought a new home and are still in the process of furnishing things so we pop into places whenever we have a chance.
We didn't know anything about the place walking in but Jerome and Michael were both great. They told us exactly how pricing worked and how to look up the pricing for the furniture on the price sheet and then they left us to it, to wander about. They were always within earshot if we had a question but never right on top of us, which I really appreciate. I hate being followed around while I'm looking at things.
We ended up buying a really nice black leather couch, two super comfortable leather chairs w/ matching furry pillows, and a lovely end stand to go with the couch. We put $20 down, and guess what, our stuff was delivered two hours later, on a SUNDAY!
They don't take credit cards, so that's a bit odd, but considering this service, I'm happy to get out my checkbook.
Thanks guys! -

Came into the store with my partner after buying a Yelp deal. Found an amazing old leather table that was about belly high. Definitely looked aged and had a bunch of character.
The showroom is huge with a ton of couches, chairs, and furniture. Not much of it was my aesthetic, but had something for everyone.
We were looking for a great chair with character, but walked out buying a great table that will do well in our living room!
Definitely recommend this place to others. Customer service was great, no one was pushing sales on you. You come in look around, if you like something ask about it. They give you the pricing sheet.
One downfall of the store was that they DON'T accept credit cards! Weird right? I mean, I wanted to collect points for my purchase! They only accept cash or check. -

Everything in this store feels like it belongs in the ersatz loft of a moderately successful investment banker.
On the one hand, I feel bad criticizing a store merely for not being to my taste. On the other hand, if I'd known what I would have found, I could have avoided a trip here.
Great if you like large leather sectionals, chrome accent pieces and reproduction Eames. Otherwise...not so much. -

I'll be honest - I have made my fair share of questionable decisions, but walking into this store was definitely NOT one of them.
Mike and Jerome, the two gentlemen running the show here, are the bona fide superstars of the furniture world!
And of course, I believe every word of it when Jerome says he's not trying to sell you anything... What he really means is that he is trying to sell you EVERYTHING! Then again, who can really blame him? If money was no object I'd buy everything inside that store. Twice.
Seriously, every piece of furniture in here is of absolute stunning quality and reeks of sheer awesomeness! Here's my suggestion - if you want something cheap (as in - buy it and replace it in 2 years cheap), go to IKEA, but if you want something that is both affordable and one of a kind, this is the spot.
For what it's worth, I signed up for a Yelp account just to give these guys the glowing review that they deserve. If that doesn't tell you anything it most likely means you are a loser like me and you probably shouldn't be Yelping anyway... But for all you other awesome (and sexy) people, do yourself a favor and check this place out!
Nearly every piece of furniture I own came from 9th Street Designer Clearance. I know I, for one, was so happy upon walking into my (now) beautifully furnished apartment that I actually shed tears of joy. In fact, that might even be a euphemism. I actually cried so hard my nose started bleeding, but not as much as your bank account will if you decide to buy your furniture anywhere else.
Happy shopping! -

I came in this morning, found an amazing black leather chaise longue at a great price, then a couple witty tirades with the owners and a couple formalities later, I was on my way with the rest of my day. The chaise got delivered in excellent condition right now just 7 hours later.
This place has really cool furniture of modern/artsy aesthetic, and fairly good prices for the designs. I'll definitely be going back there again very soon. -

My girlfriend and I were in search of some furniture, and happened upon 9th St. through Yelp (thanks everyone!). We were hoping not to break the bank on a sofa and possibly some sort chaise lounge, or reclining chair, and had looked at several places before coming here. What we had found previously was a mixed bag of cheap, that looked cheap, or expensive, that looked mediocre. Nothing had really grabbed us yet.
So we walk into 9th St., and I am a bit overwhelmed with the size of the store and variety of selections. A customer who is obviously pleased with his impending purchase happily greets us and asks us to sit on this soon-to-be-his sofa. We sit and agree that it is very comfortable. Then we meet Michael, who has been helping this gentleman find his dream sofa.
Michael is a soft-spoken man who knows his business. He sets us up with a price list (the items on the floor are tagged with maker names and list numbers, but not prices), and tells us to ask if we have any questions at all. We stroll around the store and (after a few minutes, this place is pretty big!) we find a sofa and a chaise lounge that are excellent. And the price on both is right in the wheel-house! So we start talking with Michael about how the process works, and it turns out we can get these items delivered the next day. We end up talking with Michael for quite some time about all sorts of things, some of which include furniture. Super nice guy, really down to earth, and he knows all about furniture. The two pieces are delivered the next day (if it hadn't been late in the evening when we bought them, they probably could have delivered them that day!)!
I am sure we are going to be in "need" of more furniture soon (not really a need, like water or air), and I can guarantee we will be back at 9th St.
Note: These guys do not negotiate on price. Don't try. Also, I don't think they take credit cards, so cash or checks. The selection is always varied, as they are constantly finding one-of-a-kind deals and moving them out the door. If you find something you like, probably good to lock it down, as it could be gone soon. On the flip side, if you don't see something you like one time, check back in a couple of weeks. -

We've been searching for new furniture for weeks now and feel like we've seen it all - until we came here. We saw so many great deals - like Eames chairs for less than 50% of what they charge at other stores like Design Within Reach or Room & Board. Also, Mike was extremely helpful and worked with us for quite a while. We took the Eames chairs home that day and came back in just a few days for the dining chairs we bought. Thankfully we didn't have to get anything delivered.

Michael and Jerome always take my money when I walk in the store , what's up with that?
I go to this store and they take my money and then I keep going back....
Sometimes I go to other furniture stores to be disapointed or sticker shocked.
( I did get some really good furniture for the money :) -

I'm a bit of a frugal person.
I've had back issues and the cheap ikea couch that I had wasn't going anywhere because, as previously mentioned, I'm a frugal person.
But, a great couch at a great price is exactly that. They were very helpful and patient as we wandered through the store looking at couches, testing them out, listening to my comments about form vs. function (I'm more about function).
Later that day, a couch was delivered to my abode and the old couch went on to greener pastures. -

Overall: This store carries a large selection of quality furniture at a very reasonable price!
Staff: Michael and Jerome are completely wonderful. Friendly, outgoing, honest, helpful, informative and really go out of their way to match you with what you are looking for.
Inventory: I'm in the process of furnishing my house. I'm a quality-over-quantity kinda gal, and am willing to spend a bit more on a few pieces and do without the rest. I also appreciate pieces that are unique and have character...whether it's new or an antique. They do carry a wide selection of styles and price ranges, from modern to classics. You just have to have patience and wait for the right inventory to show up (and jump on it before it's sold!).
Cash or check only, no credit cards...If you think you are serious about taking home a piece of furniture that day, come prepared with at least a check. They will deliver your furniture to your house, in some cases, the same day, if needed.
I bought a beautiful bamboo modern / oriental nesting side table and I want to hug it everyday! -

I've been all over the city and shopped at nearly every upscale furniture store in the city and around...9th Street is definitely one of the top stores in town. I've furnished 2 houses from them in the last 6 months and each time the selection was terrific, the prices were pretty good (gotta work on 'em a little - but very fair for the quality) and the quality of the pieces are excellent.
Most importantly the service - Michael and Jerome are really make it easy to shop there and really do care a great deal about their customers. Once they were shop owners - now they're good friends! -

MICHAEL WAS SENT FROM THE FURNITURE GODS!!!!! My boyfriend and I recently moved from San Diego in order to live the fabulous life in the city. It took us 3 weeks of anxiety filled searching and homelessness and many thoughts of regret of leaving San Diego until a stroke of luck landed us in the perfect apartment. So now we had an empty apartment to furnish and we thought that this would be the fun part. Why the heck, then, did searching for a good couch become just as hard as finding a place to live!?!? After some nights of hard wood floor ramen munching, we finally decided to go on the hunt for a quality couch, nothing more nothing less.
9th street was actually the second store we went into, thanks to all the yelp reviews. Immediately we were greeted by a warm and friendly man who we later found out was Michael. One of the main reasons we went into the stores was because of all the positive reviews stating how nice Michael is and let me tell you the reviews do not do him justice. Our first trip was filled with sticker shock and being two recently graduated college students, we had no idea what we were looking for and what prices should be. We spoke to Michael for a while and let him know our life stories and why we were there and he was so understanding and so informative. He is so passionate about his business and he describes it perfectly when he says that they do not try to be the lowest priced in town but actually competitive with all the designer stores- quality at a discount! We fell in LOVE with a sectional couch but unfortunately it was out of our price range at the time. Michael urged us to shop around and come back a few weeks later since they get new things all the time.
Fast forward a few weeks and many microfiber suede couches later...... The saying goes and holds true, you get what you pay for. We learned that microfiber suede does not belong on a couch and no where near our tooshies and the advertised $400 for a couch and a free ottoman from shady online stores just put us in a bad mood. So, we decided to go back to Michael. Now why would we go back to a store that is clearly out of our price range? Well, one reason, Grandma Chang was kind enough to grace us pathetic kids with a house warming present of some monaayyy. And two, Michael had told us that they receive new shipments almost every week and so we thought we would try out luck.
We get there, Michael's there! Yaaayy! He totally remembers us and listens patiently to our sob story and let's us take another shot. We look around, hopeful at first, but slowly start to feel defeated when we don't see anything that will work for us (in price that is). Even WITH grandma's money?! We ultimately travel back to Michael to inform him of our plans to sit on pillows for the rest of our lives, when we suddenly see the couch of our dreams from the weeks before, just sitting there in the corner, by its lonesome. We both forgot what the price was for this couch and I think we both wrote it off thinking it was waaaay too much. But hey, whatever, we like to torture ourselves so we drag our feet over the couch and search for it on the price list. The search itself was a journey on the list, one minute thinking it was $700, the next $5000 when finally we find the right code and follow our finger to the price annnnddd........it's within budget!!!!! HALLELLOOOOO!!! I think I shed a tear. Michael was so genuinely happy for us and told us he could deliver it THAT NIGHT! At 7 PM at NIGHT! What service! He uses a separate delivery service and the two gentlemen that broke down the couch and twisted it every which way in order to get it inside our house were also angels. Super nice, super quick. Make sure to give them something to drink because chances are they probably have been working all day!
So this post is long and arduous, just like our search for the perfect couch. And as I am typing this, I find myself typing more and more in order to not leave this epic couch. -

I never write Yelp review but I owe it to Jerome and Michael.
My story begins when I bought my first home. I decided it was time to upgrade my old sofa and get something new for my brand new place! I also decided it was time to step it up a notch from cheap Ikea furniture and get something really nice. On the other hand I'm a thrifty person in nature and my savings had just been depleted so I wasn't about to go buy some excessively expensive designer brands.
9th Street Designer Clearance was exactly the place I was looking for. They have a nice selection of many different styles. I found a beautiful sofa that I really liked at a price that put a smile on my face. I wanted it that day but I wasn't sure: I still had a list of other furniture stores to check out (9th Street was the first one I went to). Michael put it on hold for me and I wasted a few more hours at other furniture stores. In the end my mind kept going back to the sofa from 9th Street. I called back and they had it delivered that night (I even hired those movers to move into my new place, they are great).
Everything was perfect until one day... CRACK! The bottom frame of the sofa began falling apart. I was devastated and started to go into a panic thinking I had been ripped off. Well I called back and my fears faded away. This is when I really learned the true quality of 9th Street Designer Clearance. Jerome came over to my home on his own time after the store had closed for the day to inspect the damage. He later returned (again on his own time) to repair the damage and re-strengthen the structural integrity (the damage occurred because the legs of the sofa were positioned incorrectly by the manufacturer). Finally, I could relax and sit on my new sofa again! But Jerome wasn't satisfied. Although it was fixed he was not happy with the work he did. He returned for a 3rd visit with more advanced tools as well as Michael to help. He undid his previous repair and started over. This time he made it indescructable, but more importantly to him he made it to look super nice and perfect.
It's been a couple months now and everything is great. Despite the flaw in my piece of furniture it all worked out and it was a great experience. I love my sofa. I would recommend anyone to shop here for furniture. I don't believe I would have received this special kind of treatment anywhere else. It's a rare thing to find these days. -

At first, this place seemed like a goldmine.
Long story short: 3 weeks after having made a deposit in cash, we finally got our furniture! But it really wasn't worth the hassle.
We did some comparison shopping and the prices are low, in some cases 10x cheaper than the design shops just a block away.
However, with the long delay, we became a bit concerned. We called to ask where our stuff was and they played dumb. So we showed up in person and they acted like we hadn't listened to what they said about when it would be arriving from the mysterious "warehouse". Supposedly our stuff was there all along, but they wouldn't send a truck to get it, and refused to let us go pick it up ourselves.
When I indicated that this is not what we were promised, they offered to loan us some chairs for a week until ours arrived. WTF?? I want the stuff I picked out, and you people SUCK. And, oh btw, after I posted this review, they threatened to sue us over it.
But hey, just a few hours after I posted this review, they called and said our stuff had finally arrived. Not a coincidence: they offered us $10 to take the review down. We refused. Now they're calling and harassing us again. All thanks to Yelp, apparently.
We won't be going there again.Comment from Michael R. of 9th Street Designer Clearance 1/5/2011

On my parents recommendation, we came down here to check out some furniture. When I first walked in, I was taken aback by the selection and the quality look of all the pieces on display. I was looking for a sectional to fill a large living space and did some browsing around. I found one that really caught my eye and took some measurements. Michael and Jerome were extremely helpful and friendly while we browsed the showroom and happily answered our questions. We left and I decided to sleep on the decision.
We came back the next day and I was ready to buy. Jerome also led me to a couple of side chairs that would serve well to accent my new sectional. It all came out to a great price. They were even able to deliver that day, but I called back the next day to schedule a delivery date and now that it has been delivered, the set looks great in my new living room.
The quality of the stuff is excellent, prices were great and I'm very happy with the purchase and the whole shopping experience here. I wish all big purchases were this easy! If I find the need for any more furniture, I'll definitely look here first. -

I kind of ran into this place on accident.. I was minding my own business, on my way to the Trader Joe's across the street to buy my usuals ("Just Chicken" and Carne Asada, if you must know!). I didn't want to deal with the parking in the lot which can be kind of a pain, so I decided to park on 9th Street.
I glanced across the street after getting out of my car (of course, some crazy driver pumped up from his Golds Gym workout almost took my door off!). There it was... a giant banner advertising super cheap, designer furniture.
Hmm... I had to check it out.
Why did I HAVE to check it out? I have finally come to terms with my problem and can be honest... so here you have it... I have a furniture addiction.
Yah, weird I know. But if you ask my mom, she will tell you about all of the times I re-arranged the furniture in my room as a little one and how it drove her nuts. But anyway....
I walked in and was greeted by a gentleman who struck me as someone who was really friendly - not a slimy sales man. "Ok," I thought. "You can help me with my addiction."
They don't have prices on the furniture so he gave me a "secret decoder paper" - something about the prices being really low and the manufacturers not wanting them to advertise them. Great.. not only were they feeding my addiction, but now I get to go on an adventure! I might be here a while... hmm... how badly do I need that Carne Asada?
I ventured through the store and found waaay too many pieces that I liked (my taste is fairly modern/transitional, and they had a lot of items in that genre). Since I didn't need to completely refurnish, I narrowed it down to a really cool accent chair and outdoor set that I was eying. I was honestly shocked at how well this stuff was priced. As I mentioned, I have an irrational addiction for furniture so I've been shopping around quite a bit. I had almost purchased some very similar items just about 2 weeks before and am so glad that I waited (fortunately an iced latte beckoned me and I got distracted... what is it with me, furniture, and food?!). I would have been out quite a bit more of dough if it weren't for that latte.
So, I tracked down the sales guy and told him what I wanted. He informed me that payment was accepted in the form of cash or cashiers check.. That kind of sucked because I don't usually carry a wad of cash on me and always try to get air miles for any purchase. He offered to hold my pieces for a few hours while I visited my friends at the local BofA.
So I parted ways with some nice, crisp Benjamins...
But wait.. how was I supposed to fit this stuff in my Mustang and still have room for my Carne Asada/Just Chicken from TJ's? No prob... delivery! Oh.. and delivery...TOMORROW! Sweet!
Next day, as I am sipping on my favorite mid-day iced coffee, the doorbell rings and in walk my newest acquisitions. Ahh.. I love this addiction. The guys who delivered got the job done with a smile, I gave them the rest of my money (I only paid 1/2 upfront), and they went on their happy way.
So here I sit, on my new chair, sipping my iced coffee and telling you about it on Yelp. So stop reading my review and get down there and check out the furniture this place has to offer. You are obviously reading this because you either need furniture or need to feed you addiction like I did. So go. Go now! -

These. Guys. Were. Awesome.
My roommate and I were just moving to San Francisco from New York in a rush and were headed to the Bed Bath & Beyond over Potrero Hill when we spotted a curious furniture store right across the street. Mind you, we didn't really have any furniture shipped with us (expensive!) so we had been looking for some time for couches, beds, etc.
We spent a great deal of time browsing around the showroom, which was packed with furniture that ran the gamut from modern and contemporary to antique and novel. We found more than several pieces that we wanted, but settled on an amazing couch the likes of which we had never seen. Jerome and Michael were incredibly friendly and helpful throughout the entire process and were very knowledgeable about their entire selection.
When it came time to buy, the deal-breaker question had to be asked: Do you guys offer delivery services? Albeit a Sunday evening, the unanimous response was, "You bet! And we can have it to you tonight!"
These guys have a very close connection with a delivery crew headed by Manuel, and they repeatedly stated that he was the best of the best and very professional. As thick as they laid on the praise, Manuel exceeded it in his delivery. They delivered our sofa the night of purchase and with extreme care.
Ultimately, these guys have outdone themselves in service and selection. As some of the other reviews stated, they do not take credit, so other routes of payment will need to be made. But these guys genuinely want to sell their fantastic furniture and they will work with you to make it happen. They apparently move furniture so quickly that they have an almost entirely new selection every week. We guarantee we will be going back to finish the rest of the apartment. Five stars, and these guys deserve it. -

If I could take off 1/2 a star I would because 1) I was given a ballpark guestimate that ended up being $200 less than what the actual cost was and then 2) Mike didn't negotiate the price enough... especially because I offered to take three pieces off their hands.
That said, I just found the most gorgeous and unique set of dresser drawers made of reclaimed wood. Truly unique and perfect for what I needed. A few hundred over my original budget of $800 but well worth it.
The service was fun (if not charming) including Pedro who delivered my purchase within the hour. Nothing like instant gratification!
I just wish I could afford the bedside tables... oh well. -

I too was hesitant to offer the feedback. This place is hands-down a hidden gem. All the high end designer furniture you'd ever want to see at prices that make you question the store's ability to make a profit. Walking through the showroom is kind of like a stroll through a furniture museum. All the classics, even a spash of oriental. I saw everything from movie seats to chairs that hang from the ceiling.
I walked away with a white leather desk chair that retails for $800+. I paid $170. I also purchased an extremely comfy sectional with speakers built into the cushions. I'm half tempted to clutter my apartment just to jump on more of the deals.
The atmosphere of the place can be a bit competitive. The good stuff sells extremely quickly, and I haven't seen the store empty once. On my first visit, I saw two pieces I liked. I returned less than 48 hours later to discover both had sold.
All the guys at the store were great to deal with. Even the delivery service was refreshingly friendly. -

Furniture is in good condition. Lots of sofas. Prices look reasonable but the furniture is very modern/contemporary.

Dolce and I are unquestionably addicted to this place. Here we are again today, and we're leaving with a sleek, luxurious reclining chair for his parents. And, as usual, Mike and Jerome were heaven-sent with help and kindness! Their customer service is most certainly unmatched, above and way beyond anything I have ever received or expected. The floor room is always clean and presentable, which is really important in my book. This dynamic duo knows how to lovingly handle their customers; I HIGHLY recommend them for their spectacular furniture and their unparalleled quality of customer service. Love you guys!

This is a great place to buy furniture.
Admittedly, on our first trip I experienced a bit of sticker shock, so we went to about 10 other stores over the course of two weekends, comparison shopping. The truth that we found is that furniture isn't cheap - or maybe that cheap furniture really is cheap. =\
So we went back. We talked about our travails to Mike, who actually listened. He probed, found out what we were trying to do, got a sense of our budget, pointed out some issues with the plan we'd had in mind. And in the process helped us come up with a set of furniture that was better than we would have been able to pick out on our own.
I didn't get service like that in any other store - for that, coupled with the really impressive selection, I can't recommend this place enough. You may spend a bit more (~20%, in our case) than you planned, but for our part we certainly walked away feeling really good about the purchase.
I'm actually looking forward to going back and spending more... If you knew me, you'd know how unusual that is! -

HORRIBLE, I first walked in and the worker was sitting on his desk chair with his feet on his desk the whole time i was there. And when I asked for a price he said " Its too expensive" Are you kidding me???? my partner also went in a few days after and the same employee was doing the exact same thing he did to me, ass on the seat and feet on his desk. RUDE!!! PATHETIC!!! UNPROFESSIONAL!!!!!!!

In the market to buy a new couch, we had a number of very specific requirements for the ideal piece to fit through our skinny apartment door. We checked every furniture store in San Francisco (and I do mean EVERY store!) We found boring IKEA stuff at IKEA and $6000 couches that were extremely uncomfortable at the other 9th Street stores. The stuff that we found in between was all priced at like $2000 and not that comfortable either. Then we found 9th Street Designer Clearance. Heaven!
This store has every kind of couch you could ever need, plus a lot of other great stuff. Most importantly, the prices ARE AMAZING. Here, there are a ton of made-to-order, chichi couches for only a little more than IKEA prices. Then there are also the same amazing, $6000 couches you will find elsewhere but for about a third of that price! (I wanted one of these, an amazingly comfortable, luxe white down filled number, but was vetoed by my other half. Oh well. Next time.) So basically, whatever you are looking for, you HAVE to come here first, because they'll most likely have it and you'll save a bundle.
We left with a perfectly sized, gorgeous couch, luxe and expensively looking, retailing for over $2000 elsewhere but at 9th Street, priced at $750 and change. Insane. That's about what we were going to spend at Ikea on the only other couch we found that could fit. But now we have an expensive looking, super comfortable couch instead.
I couldn't recommend this place any more highly. Go here first and save yourself the pain and agony of all the other overpriced stores on 9th Street. And they have lots of other stuff than couches too! -

I am leaving them one star because of their business ethics. They said when I purchased a bed frame that I had to leave a deposit which was not a problem and that they would refund the deposit should i not be satisfied with anything.
I purchased a floor model bed frame that was white but had some scratches and dirt. When they delivered the bed frame the scratch that was on the corner looked like it had been covered by White Out and the bed was still quite dirty so I denied delivery. Never accept anything less than what is promised and pay otherwise they have no obligation to come back and make it right. The bed went back to the store and I asked for my money back and they straight up said no way.
I responded saying well if you don't then I am going to take action as a warning. I filed a report to the BBB and a couple of weeks later I got a call saying now I am not going to give you back your money for sure. No way! I was shocked and repeated what they promised; we will return the deposit should I not be satisfied.
Their prices are only marginally alright, you can find the same brands online for about the same price and mostly better. It will probably come as promised in the condition it stated. Don't do business with them unless you are absolutely sure it is what you want. Don't leave deposit money with them until they deliver the item. Their ethics are questionable especially when they ask for Cash onlyComment from Michael R. of 9th Street Designer Clearance 1/13/2011

Stopped in here randomly the other day while browsing through furniture stores in SOMA aimlessly looking for cool stuff for my new studio apartment.
This place uses a really interesting model where they contract with designers and manufacturers to get rid of furniture that is discontinued, seconds, orphaned customs, etc. They do it at under wholesale prices, and it's all first-come-first-served what-you-see-is-what-you-get. Some of the stuff there is really tasteless, but some stuff is awesome. It all depends on what they have when you come in, and it changes frequently.
They give you a price list that you use to look up prices as you walk around and look at pieces. If you see anything you like, you can buy it and have it delivered (by a really great delivery service) on the same day!
The downsides are that they only take cash or (sometimes) check, and you can't depend on them having anything in particular. Their model is also slightly wonky to create a "must buy now" kind of atmosphere, and they don't seem that willing to negotiate on prices. However, the salesmen were all really friendly and helpful, and they can check in their warehouse to see if they have something if you're looking for something specific (no promises from them though.)
All in all, a great way to get high-quality discounted designer furniture at a convenient location in SF. I purchased a new couch which is an orphaned custom that somebody changed their mind on. It's perfect for my apartment, stylish, really comfy, and cost me 1/5-1/6 of what it would have if I had ordered a custom myself! I'll definitely be back to see if the discount furniture gods smile on me again. :) -

My husband and I were looking for a bedroom set and some stuff for our living room, since our old sets were really... old (like, things we brought into our marriage from our single lifestyles years ago). He's the kind of guy who will throw down a lot of money for something he really likes, but since we have a new baby, I'm a little more spend-thrifty.
So, it was with this mindset that we set out for the City (we live down the Peninsula). We wanted to look at EQ3 and some of the pricier places on 9th Street. While we were going up to EQ3 we noticed that the bottom floor of the building is now this "Designer Clearance" place -- so I dragged Hubby in there. (Clearance: a word that draws me in. Also, I wanted to look at a wide variety of styles of furniture, not just the Scandinavian stuff.)
Not only is the selection huge, but the pricing is CRAZY LOW. I couldn't believe the prices they had on gorgeous leather sectionals and marble tables. (I literally asked the sales guy if he was joking). Like, nice nice stuff, but prices that I could actually fathom paying.
The other amazing thing was the sales guy -- he wasn't pushy but was incredibly knowledgeable and helpful. I really was impressed with my whole experience there. I give this place five stars because I was so stunned about how great our experience was. -

I've been talking about getting a new couch now for months. My roommate and I have been cozying up on my two-cushion loveseat for far too long, so I finally saved up about $900 to get something nice, yet affordable for my place. For those of you thinking, "wow, $900 is not that much for a couch"... well you are absolutely right. Even at discount prices, I have learned that $900 is not that much for a couch. Rookie.
But I digress... so I set off on my journey and Googled a few discount furniture stores in the city. Livings Collection and Select Furniture Outlet seemed to be the way to go on my budget... but oh, the reviews! Horrible! So instead I decided I go with one of your recommendations... why didn't I think of this in the first place? This is how I came to know 9th Street.
Pretty much everything everyone has said about this place rings true... but wait, there's more! I showed up with my $900 budget and as you would guess, I found something I absolutely loved and had to have at 9th Street Designer Clearance... but I didn't have enough money!
While I was pondering to myself "Who do I know that will lend me $600 right now" I began to notice numerous people eyeing my find... I knew they wanted it, and I couldn't let this happen! But this place is first come first serve. No Triple Seat Savers! What's a girl to do?
Finally, the salesman, Michael, comes by and asks me how I'm doing. I'm doing great if I could just figure out how to get this couch out of the showroom and into my house! His reply?
"Well why don't you just put down a small deposit ($100, $500, whatever) and we'll hold it for you until you can come back with rest... 15 days? One month? No problem!"

My boyfriend and I recently decided to take the plunge and co-habitate. As a treat to ourselves we wanted to buy a new couch and chair for our living room. Having never purchased a couch myself and always going with the hand-me-down variety, I quickly realized how expensive couches could be. Even some used ones on craigslist were several thousand.
I went to a wide variety of stores including some of the major department stores as well as some of the less expensive custom furniture places in the city. On a marathon day of shopping with little satisfaction we landed at 9th Street Designer Clearance. Immediately upon walking in we saw several things that we liked. The best thing about the store was the variety of high quality pieces and the amazing prices. Everything looked (and probably was originally) very expensive.
We came in right at our budget and got a beautiful white couch and amazing leather chair, which originally priced out around $8k. The best part is that the pieces have STYLE and have completely upgraded our living space without breaking the bank.
