I've eaten just about every place worth eating in the Soulard area, and I would say this is the best deli in the area.

I just don't understand why anyone would go somewhere like the underwhelming Panera nearby while there are definitely better options, such as 9th Street, available. I have not had a bad sandwich there, and have been told by coworkers that the chili is a good option as well.

The place looks small, but I've never had to wait more than 5 minutes to order, and never had a problem finding some place to sit once I had ordered.

It's kind of strange when I'm eating a sandwich from 9th street and I'm like hey this is pretty solid and decently unique...

... but through the week I'm not thinking... yeah... it's been a while... let's do 9th street.

It's more like eh... we need something decently quick and we're not in the mood to try a new place...

This place barely makes the rotation.

I've had the cajun blt, cajun turkey melt, St. Louisan... my favorite's been a  mushroom caprese.  I'm definitely going to be going through the whole menu eventually and who knows... maybe one day at 10am I'll be think'n 9th street.

Roast beef sammie was OK taste-wise but expensive for just a sammie.  Supposed to have cheese and tomatoes.  no cheese.  no tomatoes.   This is sandwhich making - how hard can it be to get right?

Gotta say I'm a bit confused. The reviews for this place look good but I was not happy with the food. My girlfriend and I had the philly, the cheese tortellini salad, and churizo chili. I'm not exaggerating when I say it was a very poor sandwich. Extremely greasy, as in grease was dripping all over and covered most of the sandwich. The grease was the only thing I could taste. The meat was not seasoned at all and I could only eat about a quarter of the sandwich before the grease was just to much. Chili was ok, buy also lacked salt. disapointing....maybe they were having a bad day, ive read they have constancy issues. Won't be back

The best sandwiches in St Louis. Yeah. THE BEST! A friendly staff. A neat building. My wife could live off of the tuna salad sandwich for the rest of her life. I have yet to order anything on the menu and not thoroughly enjoy it. My favorite is the meatball sub, I'll Pepsi Challenge that one against all others. Bring the kids, they have a nice kids menu. The grilled cheese is a knockout.

I just love this place.  9th Street Deli is a small, laid-back deli situated on a cute street corner overlooking Pontiac Park in Soulard.

While the interior is small, there still seems to be a good deal of seating due to window-side bar tables along with regular tables, all made of granite with interesting granite-slab flooring.  Adding to the charm are several small outdoor tables, lining both sides of the restaurant.

Every sandwich I've gotten here has been great and a slightly interesting take on the norm.  The chicken salad with saffron is amazing, with soft, chewy wheatberry bread.  The tuna salad has marinated tomatoes and black olives, which really compliment the overall flavor.  The Caprese was surprisingly flavorful, and even the mortadella (I wasn't sure what mortadella was, but I was feeling adventurous) was delicious with an interesting artichoke/tomato/olive relish and red pepper ailoi!  If coming for lunch, I would probably suggest getting a sandwich to split, or take home half for later, although you may end up polishing off the entire thing!

The folks behind the counter taking orders and making sandwiches are always super friendly, and you really get that "family owned and operated" kind of feel--which I like.

I've never tried any of their side dishes, so the next time I stop in, I plan to try out their cheese tortellini salad!

Holy greasy Philly cheesesteak! Read the review and highly disappointed with the quality of food. Greasy and bland. Even the chorizo chili lacked kick. Gave it 2 stars instead of 1 because the service was friendly and I liked the decor. Won't be back for the food anytime soon though....

I've only eaten here once, just now, and I had to get on Yelp to say that was the best deli chicken salad sandwich I've ever eaten. I seriously considered licking the paper afterwards just to make sure I didn't lose a bite. It had crunchy bits of celery in it, saffron for flavor, and the bites of chicken were small enough that it doesn't destroy half the sandwich to take a bite. The mayo/sauce was delicious. The bread was fresh and soft wheat berry bread. It was perfect.

Reasonable price for a delicious sandwich, nice location not too far from work, fast service. What more could you ask?

I stopped in yesterday and picked up the BLT that everyone is talking about.  I also grabed a turkey club sandwich too.  The place is roomy and nice.  There was only one other customer there so I didn't have to wait long to order or to get my food.

The sandwiches were good, but not spectacular.  The cajun bacon BLT was interesting.  I felt the bacon was more sweet than spicey.  The club was good too, but I've definately had better.  The size of the sandwiches were small compared to what you would receive from other sammie spots.

Prices are cheap, the menu is expansive, and the food was good.  I'll be back when in the area.

The local mail man suggested this place for lunch. It was a bit later in the day so there wasn't a lunch crowd.

I asked the guy at the counter what his favorite sandwiches were. He said the Philly Cheese steak and the Cajun Turkey, so I ordered 1 of each to split.

Both were really good, especially with the spicy tomato and dill chips.

The guy behind the counter was awesome, super friendly and helpful. Nice qualities when you are new to a town.

Great lunch and would eat there again if we ever head back to St. Louis.

    Thanks mail man!

Cajun BLT, Cajun BLT, Cajun BLT.

I'd like to say I've tried other items on the menu, but I can't. I'm hooked. Pathetic, I know.

9th Steet Deli is a cute spot in a historic building in Soulard. Overall, the atmosphere is nothing exiciting, but they recently got a facelift with paint and some exterior upgrades.

Did I mention the Cajun BLT?

I just finished lunch at 9th St. Deli and my conclusion is this isn't the place to give Blues City a run for it's money.

After reading the positive reviews and multiple mentions of the Cajun BLT I obliged and ordered me up some bacon-y goodness. First impression - wow this is one salty sandwich and on the greasy side too! By the time I finished the sandwich I needed two bottles of water to counter the thirst induced by all the salt.

The Cajun spices on the bacon seem to be some oily concoction instead of a dry-rub that I was expecting. The result is a salty and somewhat spicy mix that overpowers the taste of the bacon. The whole reason I love BLTs is the perfect combination of the bacon's taste and saltiness tempered with the veggies. The Cajun BLT is one sandwich gone wrong.

My lunch buddy reported that his "Special" was good but also too oily for his liking.

There are plenty of other options on the menu but based on this experience I can't see giving more than 2 stars. I'll definitely give 9th St. Deli another shot eventually.

    This...place...is...awesome!

When I lived in Soulard they opened up right down the street from me on the corner of Shenandoah and 9th.  Why is this place so awesome you ask? Because their Philadelphia Cheesesteak is the BEST you will ever have without going to the East coast and hitting up a street vendor.

Many a Saturday afternoon, after a long night of partying, would I call ahead and stagger down to the street to pick up my aid in beating a hangover.  It is greasy, it is cheesy, and it is OH SO GOOD!  The crusty italian roll they use is a perfect sponge to sop up all the goodness that the meat and cheese can offer.

The inside of the deli is very nice and simple.  All of the inside tables have very nice yet heavy metal chairs but also the table tops are all granite and go well with the tile floor.  This place is one of the reasons I miss Soulard.

Picked up lunch there yesterday with my hubby and sister-n-law. I had the prosciutto, tomato, marscapone sandwich which was fantastic. The hubby enjoyed their award winning philly cheesesteak and Mer got the Ninth Street Special. THEN we proceeded to stock up on sides like the cheese tortellini salad, creamy coleslaw, and chips! All the sides were amazing!! Needless to say we were so satisfied with our meals we actually had to stop eating and save the rest for later! =) Definitely want to go back to try the other sandwiches!

Not much of a review, but here goes:  yesterday I visited 9th Street Deli for the first time, having read rave reviews of their Philly Cheesesteak.  (I'm from north Delaware, and pretty darn picky about my cheesesteaks... if you are ever in that area, be sure to stop by either the Claymont Steak Shop or Capriotti's for great steaks and hoagies.)

The restaurant wasn't very busy this Thursday afternoon, but it was after the lunch rush.  Counter service was nice, friendly and polite.  As I waited for my sandwich, some regulars came in and were greeted with hugs by the staff.

This sandwich was good, but I wouldn't quite call it a Philly.  Seeded French loaf had a nice texture and crust, and worked well in lieu of the traditional Amaroso hoagy roll.  Inside, there was a couple slices of American cheese (yeah, I pass on the Cheez Whiz, because ew) on either side; very nice.  However, there was not much meat on the sandwich; barely enough to cover the surface of the bread - THAT'S not authentic Philly!  It should be stuffed to the point of falling out when picked up.  Got fried onions and peppers on it as well, which were tasty.

It was a good sandwich, and I enjoyed some Fitz's root beer and a side of chips.  I'd go back and try other menu items next time.  But nope, still wouldn't call it a "Philly."

Wow! What a great new-ish sammie spot in Soulard! I'm totally glad that I stumbled upon 9th Street Deli the other day! Again, I'm not a huge sandwich person, but if they are made well it makes a difference.

The staff here is nice, but not overly friendly. Service was quick! I got my sandwich within 5 minutes.

I ordered a tuna salad on wheat and it was good! They didn't put any unnecessary crunchies in their mix. And I noticed some olives, too. A huge plus in my book!

Would be happy to return and bring the man along, as he's a sandwich connoisseur.

    Mmmmmm!!! Ohhhh!!! Aaaah! Arhjoiugidphaoijdoammmmmmmm!!!

Okay, sorry. That was me moaning and groaning over how DELICIOUS my sandwich was. I had to hold all of that in while eating, thanks to my coworker, who may or may not have judged me if I had moaned while eating.

Anyway, this place is AWESOME. Just fabulous. I can't give this my 'favorite deli in STL' badge just yet, since this was my first time, but hot damn. It was just SO good.

I had the Cajun Bacon Turkey Melt -- thinly sliced turkey, cajun bacon, provel, lettuce, tomato, mayonnaise on French Italian seed. Easily the best $6.99 I've spent in a while. Oh, and it goes without saying that I subbed pepper jack cheese for the provel "cheese".

The sandwich was delicious. Just fabulous. Wonderful. Amazing. It came out to me piping hot. The bread was soft. The turkey was shaved so thin it was unbelievable. And it was PILED on. The pepperjack cheese was melty and gooey, and yummy, and the cajun bacon was just...algkalghdlka;jjmmmmm...Oh. There I go again. Sorry.

I will come back here again. And again and again and again. I will come here so much that the workers will know me by name. The other customers will know me by name. I will be here so much that everyone will wonder if I do anything else with my free time other than visit 9th street deli.

Can I give this place 6 stars? Please, yelp? Make an exception, just this once.

Cajun bacon. I will have dreams about this tonight.

I come to this place mainly for the cajun BLT, which is of course delicious.  Their philly cheesesteak is also pretty tasty, though soo incredibly greasy that I usually don't get it.  I've had a few other sandwiches too, all above average (the roast beef is my standby), but none better than the cajun BLT.  Bonus, its one of the cheapest sandwiches on the menu.

I also highly recommend their cheese tortellini pasta salad; basically a large serving of cheese tortellini and a few roasted peppers smothered in a delicious vinagrette.

    Woo! First review, bitches!
    *ahem*

In all seriousness, I'm kind of surprised that no one has written about 9th Street Deli yet--they've been getting some press from the likes of Sauce, RFT and St. Louis Magazine.

Anyway, 9th Street is another new business that has opened up in Soulard to, initially, little fanfare; but over the past year, people have begun to take notice.

In my limited time on this site, I'm sure I've made clear I'm kind of a food dick; I want good food, because I'm paying good money for it. But its easy to judge if an amuse bouche from an "infusion" restaurant is bad. How do you judge if a sandwich is bad?

    Glad you asked, me.

I have only two rules for judging if a sandwich is good.
1.) it better be a good fucking sandwich
2.) I'd better not be able to (easily) make something better at home

On these commandments alone, 9th Street Deli is a solid spot. Their sandwiches are good, and for good reason. Though I'm fuzzy on the actual details, if memory serves, its been opened by a couple of guys that have worked in more refined restaurants in the past, and decided to open a deli in Soulard where their witty, charming and handsome Asian neighbors can come grab a bite to eat (I smell sitcom!).

So its a couple of guys that have a ton of experience in upscale dining that opened up a deli where they not only have "mayonnaise" as a condiment, but also "red pepper aioli?"

Check off number two on my list, we're done.

Philly Cheesesteaks, Cajun Bacon, Texas Toast, Garlic Aioli?

Yes all those things are on the menu at this great little sandwich place. I've been three times now and I still need to go back and get the full experience.

I am one of those eaters who usually find a couple of things on a menu (if I'm lucky) that really jump out and grab my attention, but 9th street has at least 10 sandwiches that I want to try.

$6.99 for most sandwiches isn't too bad and with free parking and a park across the street to nosh in, it's in a great local.

After reading they had one of the best philly's in St. Louis we decided to give them a try.  We went on a Saturday afternoon and after ordering we had to wait over half an hour to receive our food.  That is way too long for a deli if you ask me.  I will also say that the ordering experience was a little confusing as first timers.  We didn't see the chips next to the counter and didn't realize we were supposed to grab them when we ordered our food, and nothing was mentioned about it.

On to the food.  If you like your philly's with cheese whiz, you will love this philly.  I thought it was very good.  However, my husband likes the other type of philly that uses "real" cheese.  So, between the two of us it was a toss up on the food.  I would go back, but I know my husband will not, mainly due to the wait.

After visiting the Soulard Market yesterday, I decided lunch at 9th Street was in order.  Most of the Yelp reviews I read were raves, so I wanted to find out what all of the hype was about.

I ordered a Cajun Bacon Turkey Melt and have to agree, it is delish!  Though a Missouri native, I am not from St. Louis, and therefore, have yet to develop an "appreciation" for the cheese-like substance that is Provel.  So, I made a minor subsitution in that category.  The "French Italian Seed" bread is heavenly!  Crispy, yet soft, tasty and oven-baked amazingness.  The cajun bacon was very interesting.  It added a hint of spice, but also has a sweetness to it - so confusing.

The building is a corner gem.  The decor is nice, especially the floor of broken marble remnants.  Prices were comparable to chain sandwich shops and the food was definitely superior!  Next on my list, the Philly.

    CAJUN BACON....enough said.

If this place had their Cajun BLT and nothing else, I would have still given them four stars for finding BLT perfection.  The bacon is thick but not chewy and appropriately doused in an intricate balance of Cajun spices.  (This isn't just Joe's Stuff or a dumping of Cayenne, these guys know what they are doing).  Layer that bacon on a bed of crispy lettuce, surprisingly ripe tomatoes and Texas Toast not slathered but certainly given a proper portion of mayonnaise, and this is about as good as a BLT will ever get.

Mouth watering yet?  That is just the start of this small but mighty deli menu.  9th Street Deli makes an array of hot and cold sandwiches, ranging from your typical cold Tuna Salad sandwich to a Hot Roast Beef and Cheese (perfected with some delicious St. Louis Provel) and ends at higher end foods like the Baked Mortadella.  (which comes with their AMAZING red pepper aioli...words don't describe).  If their amazing sandwiches weren't enough, they had to go and add a few decent salads, amazing little sides like creamy cole slaw and their soup of the day, and bam, you have near deli perfection.

If you don't have time to dine in, they have a great boxed lunch option as well.  Call ahead and they will have your sandwich, side, and desert all ready to go.  This more than once has saved a business lunch for me when I may or may not have forgotten I was in charge of bringing the eats to the meeting.

What 9th Street is lacking in ambiance, they are more than making up for in their food.  I say lacking in ambiance, but in many ways, this place is quite perfect the way it is.  Simple decor, sturdy tables for two or four line the walls and look out into the street and a large sandwich board announces the every day menu and their daily specials.  This is what a deli is like in many parts of the world and I am not sure that 9th Street should strive to be a glamor spot.  The food is solidly good, the menu small but diverse and the staff is competent without being overbearing when you order or dine.

Now if only they were open on Sundays, this place may be perfection.

The proscuitto tomato marscapone sandwich is a thing of dreams as long as the proscuitto is cut paper thin. I do think the Philly cheesesteak is delicious and also the cajun turkey melt. On the website it says opened in Aug of 2010, maybe a change of owners, because I've been going here since at least 2009.

They have some really nice sandwiches here. My one complaint would be there is nothing healthy on the menu! I would much rather support a local instead of Subway, but you cant really find anything here that isn't loaded with cheese or some sort of sauce. That said, if you don't care, the beef and cheddar is great.  The service is a little slow.

9th St Deli is one of my three favorite deli's in the STL.  Conveniently located in the Soulard area with plenty of meter-less street parking.  Wide arrange of sandwiches and subs.  I highly recommend the Cajun Bacon Turkey Melt and the Soulard club.  The Cajun Bacon has some serious kick to it and the Club is very flavorful.  9th St also has the most authentic Philly Cheese Steak in the city.  With heaping helpings of the Whiz and onions, it is very good.  Also 9th St has a great selection of chips to go with you meal.  They have the normal Frito-Lay affair but also have a pretty good variety of Zapps chips.  Only minus is that they will occasionally have stock out of some of the best flavors of Zapps.  A normal sandwich combo (chips and a drink) will run you about $9.50.  They have a buy nine subs get the 10th free program.  Be sure to check their hours as they do change during the winter months to be lunch only.
