A nice surprise from a local deli. I certainly love places where you don't pay for the art on the walls and this is one of them. A no frills, half convenient store type deli. Plenty of choices, something for everyone, even choices for vegetarian or those looking for a light salad... or even a heavy salad...?
Anyway it was a great random guess while in town for the day. $10 for a sandwich and salad that could feed two (unless reeealy hungry)... Breath of fresh air for a traveler like me. -

There's a Mitch Hedberg joke about buying a sandwich from a NYC deli where he complains about how they put so much meat on the sandwich that when they ask him, "Anything else?" he wants to respond, "Yeah. How about a loaf of bread and 6 other people to help me eat it." The Ninth Street Deli reminds me of that. They are very generous with their portions. The size of the sandwich, the amount of meat and cheese, and everything else puts places like Subway and Quiznos to shame. These are real sandwiches - sandwiches that will take care of even the hungriest appetites.
There are a few tables inside and a couple outside in front, but a majority of people get their food to go. They also have soups, salads, chips, and other of the like. Everything is fresh and delicious. The only downside is that service is a little slower than I would like. However, good things come to those who wait.
The Ninth Street Deli accepts food stamps, but some items are not eligible. Be sure to ask when ordering.Listed in: Change Your Lifestyle

9th Street Deli's 9th street deli sandwich was easily one of the best I've ever had. Ingredients include a hodgepodge of delicious deli meats (turkey, ham, and roast beef I believe) and swiss cheese. Add lettuce, onion, tomato, and yellow bell pepper, order it grilled with deli mustard on wheat bread. Enter joy.

I went to college at IUP then moved away for more than a decade, and every time I returned to town my first stop was at 9th Street Deli--often, I had my hoagie in hand within five minutes of hitting town. Just so you know: this is my favorite place to eat in the entire civilized world.
The guy who said these hoagies shame the chains was understating. remember those big, fat pink wiffle ball bats--sluggers?--that's what you're getting. Okay, I'm exaggerating, but we're talking two honest feet of stuffed-to-overflowing with a couple of pounds of high-quality meats on a magnificent bun, and it doesn't matter what variety you get. Toasted or cold: they are all good. I'm partial to the Italian. My wife digs the chicken salad.
So is everything else--conventional sandwiches, salads, soups...there is no food service stuff out of a can. The owners and their staff make it fresh daily. The atmosphere is great--it's in a historic building and feels like an old fashioned set-up. They even sell a few groceries and dry goods. Chips are bagged on the shelves, drinks and ice cream treats are in coolers. An adult would have a hard time eating a whole sub here--so split one and two people can eat here for under $10--and it's a whole lot healthier than fast food or that MTO slop from Sheetz. -

I miss very few things about Indiana: my friends, burn rides, Bob's Pizza, and 9th Street Deli. Oh man, there is nowhere in the world that makes hoagies as awesome as this. Their ingredients aren't anything to write home about, but they put it on a good piece of bread. The Steak-N-Cheese must be ordered with everything but pickles. It's huge. The super regular is my favorite summer eat. Their burgers are amazing and definitely hand formed when ordered. The pasta salad is an indispensable side. If you're ever unlucky enough to be really stoned in Indiana and you don't want to spend more than five dollars for an awesome hoagie, go here.
