it's a guilty pleasure

they have the best  "dude-food"

ridiculously decadent combinations, like avocado and chilli with brie... now that's just ridiculous.

i'm not that into the frat-guy scene, but i guess if you're gonna do it, do it right, and they definitely do do it right.

karaokes, pool tables, teevees, womans, and beers.

*fond memory*
my first gig in hollywood was right around the corner and we used to go to barney's (on the clock) to drink and go back messed up to finish our shift... it just doesn't get much better than that.

I don't know how this location compares to the other in Hollywood, but it seems to be really popular whenever I go (although I've never waited for a table). The atmosphere here is totally over the top and while I wouldn't pass this place up for a drink, I mostly just think of it as a fun place to grab a bite to eat at 3rd Street.

Everything that my friends and I have had to eat here has been pretty yummy. Dishes that I remember: clam chowder bread bowl, Belgian waffle, pepperoni calzone, chili, etc. My servers have never been unfriendly, but my only complaint would be that the service is generally slow (that could also be because of the kitchen).

Given the choices, it is probably one of the better places to eat on the promenade...

Next to Hooters, I think Barney's has got some of the best hot wings in town! I love having a Stella and wings and fries during Happy Hour here. It's so choice. The menu can be TOTALLY OVERWHELMING. Esp if you're like me and have eyes that are bigger then your stomach. I'm definitely more into dining here, rather than only having drinks. My goal is to try everything on the menu eventually... I know, I know... reach for the stars!!!

Service has always been a pleasant experience for me, so no complaints there. Maybe I've been lucky, considering some of the other Yelpers' (bad) experiences...

This place is way overpriced for the quality of the food and doesn't seem to remember that you ordered.  I didn't say, they don't remember "what" you ordered.  I said, they don't remember "that" you ordered.

I've been in a group of people and had our entire order forgotten twice... by different servers.  Both times they took the order and about 30 minutes later came back and said, "Oh, I forgot to turn in your order.  What did you order again?"  I admit we had our entire order comped both times, but Barney's has managed to turn a 45 minute lunch into more than and hour-and-a-half both times.

Now, although Barney's has a giant menu of probably 200 items, they all pretty much suck for the price.  A sandwich with fries will run you $12 minimum.  I usually can't finish my meal due to the amazing amount of salt they put in it.  I assume this is to make you drink more, but I've felt like dying more than once.  The burgers are okay, but for about $12 they better be much more than "okay".  Don't waste money on any kind of dinnery item, like pot roast or meatloaf, since they are less filling than the sandwiches and more than $17.

I've tried Barney's Beanery multiple times and have been disappointed multiple times.  Barney's, you are off my list.

After a long jog with my hubby at the Santa Monica STS- we came here for a healthy lite lunch... HMMMMMMMMMMM
Our waiter didn't seem to enjoy her job - She wasn't friendly at all. The place is cute- I give it that.
We ordered the half sandwich / half soup and it was not worth it!!!!! I'll keep it simple
- I'll never go back.

I've known Bob since 1984. He was a member the band of nihilistic street punks (read - middle class kids trying to piss their parents off) I roamed the streets with in high school. We spent all our time trying to get booze or drugs, going to shows at Gorilla Gardens and the Eagles Club, running away from home and hiding in each others rooms, walking back and forth across the Locks or the Ballard Bridge to Denny's and hanging out in Discovery Park. Bob looked a lot like Robert Smith back then and dated all my girlfriends for at least a week. He was my pal and he still is.

In 1989 I went to Virginia, where he was in school, to spend the Thanksgiving break with him. The night I flew in there was a massive blizzard in the DC area and I waited a couple hours for him shivering in the snow. When he finally showed up we got lost, stumbled across the White House and eventually made it back to his place in Chester . This is all I have ever seen of DC. I did see a lot of the NJ turnpike as we made our way to NYC on Thanksgiving day and had the pleasure of a Bob's Big Boy chicken sandwich in place of the traditional turkey. "Yous ready ta orda?"

This week I flew into LA for an overnight stay on my way to Mexico. Bob is there now, so we made plans to meet up. Again, I waited a couple of hours for him and again we stumbled around in the dark after most things were closed. We did a little drive by at the beach and sat at Barney's for a while; checking out ass and watching as other patron's were carded when we were not. *sigh* We finished our beers (yeah, mine was a fake one) and took the scenic route back to my hotel, not saying too much, and not having to. This is the most I have ever seen of LA.

Sometimes it's awesome when history repeats itself.

Barney's is a nice place to sit and be grateful for old friends who have lived through everything with you and are willing to do it all over again. They seem to have a lot on tap, and three NA beers for me to choose from too, oh - and a fucking ten foot wide big screen with a Wii.

This place Sucks! Do not go here!!!! My friend and I ordered a salad and sandwich which took 45 minutes to get to us, and the sandwich was missing mayo and the salad had no dressing!!! We had to wait again, forever for the waitress to come by and give us that stuff and also the utensils which they conveniently forgot to give us.
The food was digusting, dry and tasteless. I bet we would have been better off going to McDonald's for lunch. At least the service there is a whole lot better!!!!!!

I've had many different experiences at Barney's.  Last time I went there I decided I wasn't a fan.  Maybe I was just irritated because I was in a hurry but the food took FOREVER and so did the drinks and the check.

If you're looking for somewhere to drink a beer and watch sports than it's great but I wouldn't suggest going there just to get dinner.

Why is it that most of my reviews of these restaurants have little to do with food and everything to do with beer?  Once again, while I've been here on several occasions, I think the furthest I've actually gotten on the menu are the nachos which went great with?  You got it, BEER!  Yes kids, nachos are a great accompaniment to beer - hope you're taking notes.  Yet, despite my limited experience with the food here, I actually really like this place.  What can I say?  Barney's has a lot of good beers on tap, and that always puts a smile on my face.

This is a perfect bar/restaurant for a low-maintenance night.  It's fun and has laid back atmosphere - with pool tables, shuffle board, and foose ball tables upstairs and plenty of seating and televisions throughout the restaurant, it's perfect whether you're feeling like just hanging out or playing a few good games.  So if you ever find yourself here, order up a pitcher and proceed to have a great time.  Oh, and do tell me how the food is.  ;P

The tables are real dope.  The table top has clippings of celebs and famous ppl.  Just something cool to look at.  Gave me the motivation to make my own with my own photos.
I love coming to this place as it excels in three things: chicken wings, beer selection and great looking waitresses.  What more does anyone need.  Oh yeah, they do have tv's showing whatever game is on.

Tourist trap.  Like Yankee Doodle, this is where you go for badly-done bar food.  Well, if you have a simple palate, might be the place for you.

If you must go here, first eat at the Fat Burger across the street.  Then go into this "restaurant" for beer only.

I went here for breakfast.. definitely a "bar" breakfast.. just thrown together and not the greatest quality. Toast was burnt and sausages were rubbery.. and the coffee was very bland.

I did like the service and the location.. as I'm a tourist. The food itself sucked.

This is a place that, all at once, it tough to like yet tough to hate.

The menu is like a newspaper.  Well, it is a newspaper.  Literally.  A confusing one.  It seems they could condense the thing.  But maybe that is the schtick!  I see.

The food is just okay.  Not bad, not good.  Above just being edible.  But not quite good.  But good enough to go back.  I feel like Crissy Snow.

I rode my bike there today all the way from Hollywood.  So I was hungry.  I gulped down the "red burrito."  Not so starved, I might have not liked it as much.  Not sure.  Now I have heartburn.  Barney's fault?  The burrito's fault??  Or mine???

It is nice to sit outside on Third Street.  I might have to try the other locales for a comparison case.
---
and how could I forget?  they put like, or maybe it is, hash brown potatoes inside the burrito.  weird.

I went here recently after a skeeball jaunt on the Pier. Place is very kitschy and if you're a pop-culture freak, you'll love it as you try to figure out who all the quasi-celebs are on your table while you wait for your grub. Plasma's all over the place with lots of satellite sports. Free WiFi too which is a major selling point for me if I decide to have an informal meeting with a client in that area. Beer selection is great with plenty of choices of both draft and bottles including everything from Abita and Iron City to Blanche de Chamblay to the top of the line Belgian stuff. Food is OK but nothing spectacular. The menu is huge with everything from breakfast choices to a host of burgers to even a little cajun food. Had the wings which were good as well as the egg rolls and cajun fries which definitely didn't use Tony Chachere's for the seasoning. Yea, I could tell. I keep hearing that they're known for their chili so I'll have to try that on a future visit. For now, it's a place I would consider along the Promenade although not necessarily my first choice.

Lions and Tigers and BEERS OH MY!!

If you want good beer, and lots of it, come to Barney's. They have almost 20 U.S. beers on tap alone in addition to about 130 others including international beers on tap and bottled beers!!

And their food is pretty good too--definitely go with their burgers. Their garlic burger is VERY garlicky so don't get that on a date or if you are planning on hanging out at the social scene at this place afterwards ha. Their onion rings are battered well, but the onions themselves didn't seem as flavorful as they should be and my friend loved her veggie Hawaiian burger too. Oh ya and they have 2!!!! ciders on tap which made me super happy in addition to having Pyramid amberwiezen on tap too!! yay for a fun, festive place where beer is free flowing and the crowd is always buzzing!!

it's kitschy and is definitely for tourists.
the food was alright. the onion rings were really good. and they have a lot of variety and can even make things to order, just don't really expect them to be on point, because the waitress never wrote anything down, so we where missing things and it took her a while to get to us but she was the only one we ever saw waiting tables so i guess it's an excuse.
other than that, it was a chill place to eat at. sort of like a tgifridays mixed with a gritty burger stand.

I'm really torn. On the upside we always have a good time when we have our happy hours here, and I definitely have a lot of memories (good and bad) associated with them. The food is decent, and I am absolutely in love with the Irish Nachos.

On the flipside, service is hit or miss, it's impossible to have lunch here and make it back to work on time, and am I the only one who notices that acrid musky smell inside? It takes me at least 15 nauseating minutes to get fully acclimated.

I guess we'll just have to agree to disagree.

Barney's Beanery is unlike any restaurant I've been to.  The menu is soooo extensive that the breakfast items along is 2.5 pages.  I ordered the chorizo and eggs and it comes with warm tortillas.  It completely hit the spot and almost wish I ordered a beer to compliment the meal.  My coffee with sugar and cream ended up being fine and just the right amount of caffeine to perk me up.

Enjoyed my meal, company, outdoor seating and guitarist playing songs that made me nostalgic whilst we ate.  The only thing that struck me as weird was because it was a bar as well, the servers were so scantly clad at 11:00am.  Strange, but hey, I guess they need to get those tips.

This place has a thousand beers on tap!!!  Can't make up your mind?  Try the beer tasting option...two options to choose from.

Fave beers there include Blue Moon, Franziskaner, Paulaner, Hoegaarden.

Go for the beer!  'Cause the food's ok.  The chili is pretty good.

I had dinner there with a neighbor on a Monday and the waitress went way out of her way to accommodate us.  They even put Trading Places on the big screen just for me and my friend.  Classy.  Oh yeah they also have a Ms. Pacman video game with Dig-Dug, Pong, and all the wonderful simple games of my 80's childhood.  Oh yeah and they have a Foos-ball table.  Doesn't take much to impress me.

Barney's has become my default standby bar.  It seems to be the one place everyone can agree on when we're all too lazy to think of someplace more original.

First of all, you can't go wrong with their beer selection.  They have something like 120 available (yet I always reach for a Bass).  Considering how busy it can get in there on weekends, the bartenders are usually quick and friendly.

The menu can be a little intimidating.  It's 10 pages and done up like a newspaper and you can purchase a copy for 50 cents.  I'd like to know how many of those they actually sell...probably more than you'd think seeing how it's at Tourist Ground Zero.  They have a few salads and whatnot to appease the health-food crowd, but the real reason to eat here is their massive selection of junk food.  Definitely try the chili at some point and the pizza is surprisingly good.  They also serve the best breakfast I've ever eaten in a bar.

As for the surroundings, there are plenty of TVs and even a few smaller ones at individual tables on the lower level that you can set to whatever you want.  There are license plates on the ceiling and magazine clippings underneath the lacquered tabletops so there's always something to look at even if the crowd sucks that night.

This place is just like home.  That is, if being in your home consists of pulling the lid off a can of Rosarito Refried Beans and digging in with a plastic fork while Grandpa farts on the couch next to you while watching an Ultimate Fighting Championship.

This Barney's is absolutely inferior to the WeHo one because:

- the outside seating has tiny vintage TV's akin to reading the vision chart.

- the men's toilet has an annoying attendant to clog up the sinks.

and

- the street performer sings Whitney Houston until you want to light up da crack pipe.

This places is a total sensory overload...Oh...my god...
I loved every square inch of it though, from the red lighting to the license plates all over everything, to the 3948573948579357 t.v's behind the bar, to the 40 beers on tap.
I went on friday night too, so on top it being waaaay too much to take in, there were waaaaaay too many people in there. It's a fairly large place though, so all the yuppies and the college kids and the older folks didn't have to be all up on eachother.
The bathroom is hilarious, the menu is printed in newspaper format, and the service is great out on the patio. Fun times indeed.

went here for the first time and it was pretty good. other than hating the promenade, i thought barney's did a pretty good job of serving a packed restaurant and sitll giving good service, even during the playoff game. plus, the tv set-up here is more condusive to serious game analysis than at my trusty weho location where its more cramped and the tvs are smaller and seemingly older. if it weren't so far, I'd go again. oh yah, and food was good... though overpriced considering I paid $18 for chicken fried steak& eggs and 1 beer, including tax and a 20% tip.

HUUUUUGE MENU! pages and pages....AMAZING black bean meatless burger. I got it the philly style and it was supremely fabulous. Their seasoned fries are also tastey. The service was a little freakishly slow for a sunday afternoon...but the food was still worth it!! Try the WeHo location for nighttime attractions, they had some hilarious karaoke singers.

I love this place for a number of reasons, let me count the ways.

1. It always seems to draw the underage tourists.
2. Pool table.
3. Food that you not only don't want to eat you don't want to sit around.
4. Huge beer selection.
5. Trivia night and big screen TVs pacify the ADD.
6. Frat boys and the girls who love them.
7. Anonymity

My good high school buddy Gerald introduced me to place on the promenade.  It has to be my favorite place to watch games in LA.

I was blown away at having 3 TVs at my table and a selection of whatever football games that I wanted to watch.  We went here over Thanksgiving and the holidays to catch some football games.

Good food menu and beers to choose from.  I am definitely back here when I return to LA...

Sadly, this is not at all affiliated with the Barney's hamburger place that's up in the Bay Area. (I don't know, it sort of looked like it from out front...) And the hamburgers just didn't live up to my exacting standards.

I would skip the food next time and just go for the beer - if I was forced back, that is. In addition to the many televisions at the bar, there are many beers on tap, enough to satisfy most beer appetites.

And I may be wrong, but I think there was a bathroom attendant in the men's room, but not the women's room? The women's room could really use one. I hate places that don't offer paper towels.

I can't lie, I have a friend who works at Barney's so I would give it 5 stars even if it were a crappy place that recently got shut down for vermin infestation (like a certain competing bar just down the block).

Ok here is what you need to know about Barneys:

Clientele: Seems to be about 80% tourists/shoppers and regulars.  You'd be surprised how many regulars this place gets.  Age ranges, but skews older than the WeHo branch.... median age is probably 30 or so...

Decor: TVs everywhere, so it's a good place to watch sports... And let me ask you this, where is there a better sports bar in Santa Monica?  Yankee Doodles? Please.  Q's? Sure, but you will get a neckache trying to look up at the TVs if you are seated at the bar.  The Parlor? Sure, but that's just a different kind of place, more upscale (if you can call a sportsbar that) and with Barneys you can be in shorts and tshirt just as easily as in a sportscoat (though to be honest, sportscoats are not all that common here).

Food: Big variety, but this is your basic bar food.  Recommended items include the chicken fingers, the salads (believe it or not) and the chil fries.  Burgers and sandwhiches are decent.  Avoid the pot roast.

Overall: If you just want to have some beers or stiff drinks, take a load off while shopping at the promenade, or just looking for a place where you can catch a game, this is as good a place as any to do it in Santa Monica.

well, cool place to chill.  outside seating is a nice plus, there are always musicians right out there close by, which is cool.

inside lots and lots of tvs, big bar area, pool table, and lots of seating for dinning...

the food is not bad, lots and lots of choices, last time I was there had a beer and soft tacos, rice, black beans...wasn't bad...

my friend had mini burgers and cajun seasoned fries that were yummy...

I've had the chicken breast sandwich before with a salad...pretty good!

it's on 3rs st promenade so you can walk around there and hang there too, maybe even do a movie...pretty cool place overall. :-)

You wouldn't be able to tell from looking at my stomach (at least not until my metabolism starts catching up with me), but I like to style myself as a connoisseur of beer. Especially little-known brews from around the country/globe. As an uncle of mine once said, beers are like women - you want to sample as many from different parts of the world as possible before you go out in a pine box. Okay, Yelpers, I lied - I never had an uncle who dispensed such worldly wisdom to my impressionable ears, I just made that shit up. But it sounds like a pretty goddamn unimpeachable philosophy, if I do say so myself. Anyway...

Beers. Lots of 'em. Barney's Beanery has quite a nice array of beers on tap, including Sea Dog Blueberry Ale (which my friend swore by) and some Hawaiian brew I'd never even heard of. Kona something. Good, good, good. All good.

And of course, being in a major shopping strip a couple of blocks from the pier means that there's some serious people-watching to be done while you're wiping burger juice off your chin. Most entertaining for us was a couple of girls in their early twenties, dressed like they studied a manual on "How to Look Like an American" but one that dates back to, say, 1985. Fluorescent orange ski caps. Bubble-gum Converse sneakers, acid-washed jeans with all the rips in 'em. Samantha Fox would've been envious back in the day. Obvious foreigners. And nice as pie when, after an hour of trying to place their accents, we finally approached and asked where they were from. Norway, it turns out. And looking for bar action, as they beseeched us to tell them to where the hotspots in Santa Monica were. We pointed them to wherever we believed horny young yuppies might possibly form a shark's circle around a couple of cute (if comically dressed) European girls, and then we were off.........

Wait, let me rewind. I seem to have jump-cut past a crucial part of the review here. Hold on, lemme see if I can find it........... ((((((( .ffo erew ew neht dna................tuo snrut ti ,yawroN....... "naciremA na ekiL kooL ot woH"........ enod eb ot gnihctaw-elpoep suoires emos.........  )))))))

Ah, here it is.... the food! *ahem* Yes, the bacon cheese burger I had completely filled the bill as well. It came with two nice long strips of bacon (which I proceeded to break down into four) and the meat was done exactly the way I ordered it - medium well, which left juices running down into the bun with each bite, which I happen to love. If my jaw seems to hit the ground over such a triviality (whoa! they cooked the meat the way you ordered it!), then let me say that, for some reason, I rarely seem to get a burger cooked any other way than "well done". And I come from Chicago, a foodie town if ever one existed, so go figure that one out. Nice, thick, wedge-cut fries as well, and they certainly didn't skimp on the pickles and onions and such.

Okay. Done.

I wonder if those girls found the, um.... *drinking* action they were looking for......????

Boyfriend and I were looking for some grub post-shopping and pre-movie on the Prom'.  Seeing as how it's the Prom', even a cheapie looking Greek place had a $17 entree price tag.  So we ducked into Barney's for some cheap grub and a brew.  I had a decent burger, a Hefeweizen, and some fries.  Then I saw "The Mist."  Sometimes all a girl wants is burgers, brews, and horror movies.

It's cheap and decent.

After a night of cookin...me (still im my white pin striped baggy chefwear pants and my brother's 20 year ols dodgers shirt) and a couple of co workers headed out to barneys in santa monica.

doorman dude: can i see some id's?

(hands mine over)

doorman dude: umm...is this real?

me: huh?

doorman dude: I'm gonna give you a chance to walk away with it.

me: why? I wanna go inside.

doorman dude: but if I show it to my manager he won't let you in and he'll take it away.

me: um...well show it to him.

doorman leaves and comes back a few minutes later.

doorman dude: really sorry bout the inconvenience ladies...come on in

ugh. that just annoyed me. the overly done up cocktailer ignoring us annoyed me as well. i don't think i'll be going back there any time soon.

I really like this place and want to like it more...TV's everywhere, pool table, inside/outside eating areas, extensive beer selection, good music and hot servers.  It's the D-Bag factor that makes it difficult to qualify this place as favorite.  You can even see it in the bartenders' eyes - "Come on D-Bag, don't be such a D-Bag."

Everything I have to eat besides the burgers and the Irish nachos have been mediocre.  The kitchen is open late - a plus in my book.

I gotta give it up the bartenders - very consistent and professional.
