Thai Tom is quite possibly my favorite hole-in-the-wall Thai restaurant in Seattle! It's difficult to be disappointed with anything you order on the menu.  My favorite is the yellow curry with chicken and vegetables- served piping hot, right amount of spice (you can specify by stars, 1-5), and always with fresh ingredient.  Be careful if you're sensitive with spicy food though, my friend ordered it with 5 stars thinking it won't be thaaat bad and I swear, I saw him tear up a bit... :) You probably won't go here for the atmosphere since it's a closet of a restaurant and if you sit at the bar area with the open stove- you literally feel that your face is on fire sometimes from the flames!  Good view though and always fun watching them cook in lightning speed, but hot hot hot!  Watch them eyebrows...

I've always gotten take-out via my roommate from here. I've never eaten inside nor have I actually seen the location but I hear it is teeny. Being someone who unfortunately cannot handle much spice, this place tends to make my curry much spicier than I enjoy. However, it is real good... and painful.

Yes, there is limited seating.  Yes, sometimes there is a wait.  Yes, they take cash only.  But most importantly, yes, their food is worth getting past all that.  If you've never been here then you might want to err on the safe side when they ask how many stars you want for your dish; they will deliver no less than what you ask for.  Chicken Phad Thai and Swimming Rama are my two faves, along with their Tom Kah Gai soup.  Don't forget to order your Thai iced tea to wash down all that spiciness!

So thank you, old college roommate, for introducing me to this delicious hole in the wall.

This is definitely worth the experience for the Thai food lover. I always like to see the chef do his choreographed movements of ticket-taking, seasoning, grilling, frying, boiling, stirring, mixing and serving.

It's claustrophobic in here but fun. One can make a YouTube video out of the Thai Tom chef's mad culinary skills. And I never go home disappointed. My tongue may be on fire from the spices, but that's barely disappointing!

P.S. Order the Pad Thai, you can't go wrong. Swimming Rama is good, too, if you like curries.

P.P.S. Before you place your order, know for certain what you want. I get a vibe that hemming and hawing isn't really humored.

I am a concierge for a nearby hotel, and was absolutely appalled by the lack of customer service Thai Tom's offers.

There are hundreds of Thai restaurants in Seattle. Don't bother with this one.

Our hotel called around 11:30 am (depending on which site you're viewing, they either open at 11 or 11:30, we chose the later of the two) inquiring as to whether they were open and ready to take a to go order. They take our order, say it'll be ready by noon.

I walked over to there, and poked my head inside. All of them gawked at me, and inquired as to "What I was doing in their place".
When I asked about our order, I was told "We no start. You not here. Come back later. Done later."

I was angry. But I just left. And came back at noon. They looked surprised I was back, and pulled my order out of the trash IN FRONT OF ME and put it back up on the grill. This time I sat down and returned the frosty glare that the hostess was giving.

As I was leaving, I didn't leave a tip, as I saw absolutely no reason to. The hostess looked at the exact cash I'd given her, and pointedly asked if I'd forgotten anything.
Being the pissed off smart ass I am, I had to say "Nothing worth remembering", which made her glare more.

But seriously? Good food is more than just the food, it's the presentation there of. And there presentation was lousy and hostile. They do not deserve money or business when there are many other excellent, and much kinder Thai places.

I have to agree with the rave reviews. Coming from SF,  one of my favorite Thai places used to be Osha Thai, and there hasn't been something comparable until now. A different ambiance but the food is just as tasty and very economical friendly (aka cheap). The portions are more than generous. I ordered the Spicy noodles and coming from someone who can handle spicy, 5 - stars, mean 5 -stars and a glass of water for each star. My noodles were tasty (oh I think I already mentioned it), served in a ceramic leaf bowl. It was perfect.

The restaurant is a bit small, so expect a wait. The menu is artistically painted on a piece of wood. (Beware there are misspellings but you have to love it). Oh yeah, if you've ever had Korean BBQ be prepared to have a similar experience, with smelling like food when you leave and inhaling smoke where the kitchen is in eyes view. Parking is a bit of a "B" where it's street parking and can get crowded.

A must try though! I loved it. It beat Racha Thai hands down.

Thai Tom is everyone's favorite hole in the wall. If you don't want to wait in line for 30 minutes, come early or kill time shopping. The college kids are on that place like white on rice. Cash only. Don't bring more than two friends. Its filth, noise, and claustrophobia are part of its appeal. Enjoy.

If you can't take the heat, stay out of Thai Tom. It IS the kitchen. I love the heat, myself. From the stove AND the dishes. Five stars, please. Thigh and elbow contact with steaming strangers is expected. Cheap thrills. Especially delicious when it's raining.

My love is conditional: Does anyone know if there was a change in management or something? When my mom and I went, the other night, we didn't recognize the chef or the servers. The peanut sauce wasn't as sweet and nutty as it usually is and the spicy broccoli dish was made with chili flakes instead of chili sauce. It was still delicious and we cleaned our plates, but I liked it better before. Wah.

One of the few spots in Seattle where you can have an authentic and delicious meal in a joint with a TON of character.
It is essentially street food.... so if you get pinched up about waiting in line or  not having five star servers waiting on you hand and foot....then you should probably skip this place and leave it to the  hungry folks who can appreciate a cheap and delicious meal that is literally cooked two feet from your god damn seat!

What more can I say?

I love their Swimming Rama, no other place prepares like they do.

Couple of points.

5 star means 5 star here.

I think I know who Tom is but I actually like the older guy's cooking better. His phad thai is better executed with less breakage of noodles and less burn in fried rice.

I just wish that they make the food little less sweet..

The servers are quick and efficient.

Overall, my favorite Thai place in Seattle, period.

BEST THAI SPOT ON THE AVE.

SMACK DOWN ON THE PALATE!

Hungry? Craving for something good? Something "asian"? Sweet, spicy, salty? Hit this spot. Just being honest, I've had better Thai food but for the Ave this is the spot. Forget all those other Thai restaurants, trust me, they're not that tasty. If your willing to wait 10 mintues (for go-to orders) or 15-20 minutes (for seats inside) then your in for a good one. I find that their dishers are "okay-proportion" I think they're being a little selfish there. But still wroth a shot to eat. Smack down on the palate!

The atmosphere at this place is great, if you can get  a seat... you feel like you have really stumbled upon some place special.  Food is a bit greasy but sometimes that is what the body orders... I recommend anything with peanut sauce... becareful with the stars, they make things a bit hotter than i am used to

Meh.  This place is ok.  Its definately not my type of Thai restuarant, I usually like to go to a place with a group of people and order like 5 different plates.  But hot damn, if you like spicey Thai Food order it from here, probably one of the spiciest palces EVARR!  Here you just feel so limited, because you can only sit like 3 MAXX to a table.  And the wait for this restaurant is usually too long.  I guess if you attend UW, and are looking for a Thai place to go with your friend, this is your place.  I just feel when Im at this place, I feel soo limited just ordering one plate....I SCREAM FOR VARIETY!

Thai Tom is sooooooo efffffffing gooooooooooood.  I knew it was TRUE LOVE when my bf flew with an order of pad thai from Seattle to San Francisco so that I could enjoy Thai Tom even though I didn't make it to Seattle that trip.  Possibly the SWEETEST thing he's ever done for me.

Too busy.  If Tom is not cooking, forget it.  George is okay, but not worth the wait.  Get tom kha (soup in a coconut) because it is divine here.  But only if Tom makes it.  He is rarely there, as he's usually in Thailand.

5 stars.  Both the rating, and how spicy you should get your dish! Bring cash.  Super busy.  Super awesome.

- It's really busy in the evenings, try going for lunch sometime.
- Takeout is an option, but the in-restaurant experience is what really makes Thai Tom so special

The small, intimate place is just a really unique atmosphere.  The first restaurant I ever ate at in Seattle once moving here full-time, the open kitchen is just sweet.  Out of town visitors new to Thai food might be overwhelmed, but will love it!

This is a great place to come with -a- friend, don't try to get too many seats.  You can always come in a group, just go for individual seating... but this isn't a place to spend time dining.

Okay, this place is special, but you have to know what you're getting yourself into.  You have to be someone that is into the experience of eating, someone who would travel across the world to have the best and most truly authentic cuisine.  Someone who appreciates food at all levels, including street food and markets.  Also, you have to be looking for a simple and quick meal; no 3-course meal necessary here.

Thai Tom is cramped.  It is hot.  It is rushed.  It is even dangerous - I sat at the bar and Tom will plate food with a burning hot pan a few feet from your face.  Why would people submit themselves to this?  Because he is the best at what he does.    Welcome to Tom's world.

Dishes average $7.50 and range from pad Thai to curry.  Spiciness is on a 1-5 scale, and I warn you  "Medium" or 3 packs a punch.  Uh oh, now I'm craving it again.  Delicious - enjoy!

CASH ONLY.

WOW i still can't believe it !!! a lot of people actually likes this HORRIBLE Thai restaurant! ok! to be honest I've been there 2 times in the past and had enough of it. this restaurant. The place is very small and smells, its impossible to bring 3-5 parties." The waiters are super duper unbelievable RUDE "  I went there with a friend around 6pm to have a dinner together. as we entered the restaurant, the male waiter took us to the front table cross to the door. as i looked around, there are 2 empty sits at the bar which i thought it would be fine for the two of us to sit there. as i sit at the bar, this freakin rude waiter stopped me for being sitting at the bar. he says with his bad mood face and rude attitude that we can't sit at the bar. Okay... and i ask him why i can't sit on the bar? and for some reason he started to SHOUT at us. he says "IF YOU DON'T WANT TO SIT HERE, JUST GO!!!" oookaayy... and i politely ask him why?? I'm a customer, why do you have to be soo angry? and he risen up his voice again. he says " I HAVE TO WORK!! I HAVE PEOPLE LINE UP! IF YOU DON'T WANT TO SIT, GOO!!!" he showed me his book list where there are 4 names on it, but as i looked around, there are no other customer line up in front and at the back of us, which mean it's just a lie. I can't stand his rude attitude, without any further talk, we leave that dirty restaurant. enough its enough, ill never go there again, well actually their foods are not so good at all, people goes there because it cheap! there are lots of better Thai food around town with a way better services and great Thai food. ow, one thing to remind you all before you go in there, this restaurant is soo small, the smokes from the kitchen will makes your hair and shirt smells. its hard to find a parking too!  ugh..  F**K THAI TOMMMMMMM UUGHHHHHHHH

Thai Tom's is easily my favorite Thai place.  The food is excellent and atmosphere is great.  The only issues are it is nearly always packed, so there is waiting, and parking can be a pain.  Other than that I feel this is a must and well worth the wait.

I love everything about Thai Tom, from the food right down to the atmosphere.  I think half the experience of eating here is being able to watch Tom work like a crazy man as he pumps out dish after dish of incredible yet simple thai dishes.  He uses all freshly prepped ingredients which really help the flavor profiles, you get great ginger and garlic flavor throughout.

My only qualm with this place is its incredibly tiny size and the fact that its next to the UW (for parking reasons, not because I am a cougar).  However  I also love the fact that it is in such a small location because it really helps maintain the intimate environment.  I have never had a bad experience here, only nearly died of starvation from waiting for a table.

While this definitely is not the best restaurant for groups or a leisurely meal, it is good for an authentic thai experience similar to getting street food or going to one of the many hole in the wall places in Thailand.  I loved the eggplant dish I've had here and all the noodle dishes.  Very flavorful food.

I've been here several times and have always had really great food.

The only complaint I have is that I can't figure out a good time to go, it seems like it's always packed with a line of people out the door.

I love the open kitchen though, it's fun watching them hard at work cooking the food.

These guys should expand into a bigger place, I think then people would enjoy the environment more. Sometimes it feels like you are trying to enjoy a meal amongst chaos with all the people standing around you waiting for a place to sit.

The food is very hit or miss here...I have had some of the best and worst thai meals here...I guess that is why I keep going back, never sure if this will be the best or worst meal of my life. Spiciness factor is always a surprise...2 stars can mean 4 and vice versa. Service is average. The space itself does have lots of character, small, quaint, blaring techno or dance tunes. The atmosphere is entertaining, especially when you are sitting at the counters and watching the chefs work their magic.

I really love the food at Thai Tom. Now this is AUTHENTIC and REAL Thai. I love the crazy cook who stir fries quickly, with pizzazz, under extremely scorching conditions. I love the menus which remind me so much of Thailand. Yay for teak wood! I love that in the summer they put tiny tables with stools outside for you to eat around. You can almost pretend you are in Thailand. What I didn't love was the last time I went and there was a scary bug running like scary bugs do up the wall. The cook smashed it against the wall with a cloth (I hope it went in the dirty cloth bin). I haven't mustered up the courage to go back again but honestly bugs in restaurants is SOOO Thailand, it brought back memories of visiting my family over there and eating in the markets and on the beach. I will rally my inner troops and get my butt back over there one day!

My boss told me that I had to eat here. "It's the best Thai food you'll EVER have," she said, "just don't get scared when you walk in."

Now, I appreciate that she warned me for a couple reasons. One, the place was really tiny. Two, the employees seemed utterly indifferent to, if not aggressive with, their patrons.

An example: two customers go to sit at one of the tables in the back, and the waiter yells "No! That's our break table! Go sit there!" (even though ANOTHER table was already being used as a break table). They reply that it's too cold to sit next to the doors (which are wide open), and he responds "Yea, well I'm cold too!" Unsurprisingly they left, and I laughed under my breath.

And three, it IS some of the best Thai food I've had in a long time. The panang curry with a spiciness level of 3 was great. I originally asked for 4, and the waiter looked at me through his eyebrows and said "have you ever eaten here before?" Obviously an outsider, and verbally pegged as one, I backed down and said 3 would be good. Sure enough, 3 had me sweating, and I was pretty happy that the doors were allowing the cold Seattle wind into the joint. Especially since I've been going without deodorant for some time now. Turns out I enjoy the au natural feeling, while others have to bear the smell. C'est la vie I suppose.

Lastly, I saw no cockroaches. Good for you Thai Tom!

BEST Thai food in town!  It is rather small and there is typically a wait, but one well worth it!  The yellow curry is the best.  It is spicy though, beware.  If you can't handle the spice I recommend ordering a 1 or even a 0 if you are a real wimp.  The first time I went and ordered a 3, and could hardly eat it.  If you eat tofu, they deep fry theirs, its interesting, but not that good in big portions.  The pad thai is also great!

Boooo!!! I don't understand why so many people hate this place!!

When you come in here you HAVE to realize that you shouldn't be expecting service from a high-class restaurant. You also HAVE to realize ... that duh - the food probably will be a little spicy (its like going to McDonald's and complaining that the burger is greasy). Give me a break you guys, you're coming here for the experience! The fact that the food is pretty damn good is just an extra star (heart)

I like coming here and sitting on the bar and watching the chef cook. Its amazing watching him cooking eight dishes at a time, passing off a dirty pan to the guy at his side - its really fantastic. Like a perfectly choreographed dance.

This was the place i took my little sister who despises Thai food with a vengeance and converted her. Just a note! If you like more salty type of food, come here. If you like the sweeter ketchup infused version you might be better off eating at AppeThai.

If you really want to avoid the long lines go sometime after 2pm, although there will still probably be a line. This place is perpetually busy.

So my and my friend Naomi wanted to get lunch at Squid and Ink last week, when we decided we were far too lazy to take the bus down to SODO. Another great vegan option Naomi suggested ; Tom Thai. I had never been to this specific establishment, but have past by it at least 100 times.

You may know this place as the restaurant that has people (mostly college students) piling out of the door at all hours, drawing a majority of neubies away from good eats.

First off, I almost booked it out of the door when I saw the menu. Not because of price or anything because I don't care about that but because they have the coolest menu I have ever seen. It is made out of wood with one single piece of rope for hanging.

This restaurant has the hardest working people I have ever seen in the restaurant business. They look really awesome doing what they do, too. This certian strategy they have down with team-work had me fascinated (I was sitting right at the bar) I ordered the eggplant garlic dish and it beats most of the same dish I've had. I'm giving Thai Tom a 4 star for a job well done.

It's tiny, holds about ten skinny people and eight and a half not so skinny people. It's got terrible lighting, the stove and the dish washer are so close that some times you'll get sprayed in the face by something, uncertain if its source is peanut sauce or dish soap. And there really is no better place in Seattle to get Thai food. The menu is on a wood slate that is passed around from patron to patron, familiar or not. Swimming Rama and Pad Thai are my personal favorites, but I haven't heard of a single unsatisfied customer.

I have been to Thai Tom's several times in the past few years, but I have finally decided to write a review on it after my visit this week.

First of all, you have to be careful with the spicyness in the star system. I ordered 4 stars and it was SOOOO spicy.  I loved it but was not expecting it (haha I am so smart).  The servers did a great job considering the restaurant was super busy.  My cup was never empty of ice water (THANK GOD) and the girl was on the ball at all times.

I know that the store is tiny because of tradition and authenticity, but it is way too small!  When I initially entered the restaurant, it was smokey and my boyfriend had to go outside to adjust.  Also, the seats are so close together.  If you are sitting in the "booths", it is very likely you will go bum to bum with someone at the next table, which is kind of awkward and annoying.

Nevertheless, the food was really good.  I had the Pad Thai (4 stars) and it filled me up and kept me warm through this crappy weather Seattle is going through even though it's already June.  Cheers!

I have no idea if the food at thai tom is authentic.

I could see a how a few dishes come out of those overworked woks with more than the daily reccomended dose of oil.

Its probable that there are non-human creatures lurking in the place.

I'll bet that you will wait, no matter the time or weather.

I guess the only thing to be sure about is the taste, which is frickin' delicious.

Oh and that they absolutely do NOT take plastic. That's another given.

Finally, why on earth would you try and eat with more than one person at a restaurant that only has two-top tables? No bitching about that Yelpers!

A place with character - I love how the menu is painted onto a slab of wood. The cooks put on a show without even trying, tossing in veggies over a searing hot flame. The pad thai was delicious, although was lacking in substance (mostly just noodles and meat). They could improve by going a little easy on the sauce and adding more stuff like tofu, bean sprouts, more peanuts, etc. Take a page from Thai Basil in Berkeley!

HORRIBLE HORRIBLE service, by far my WORST dining experience ever.

I've been to Thai Tom 5-6 times in the past, and always liked their food.  But I am not going there ever again due to the service I received tonight.  This is what happened:

I ordered 4 stars "Spicy Noodle" but for some reason it was REALLY salty.  My friend asked me if I want to ask the servant to replace the dish, but I thought that I'll just let it go this time and ask for more rice.

When we got the receipt, we noticed that the total was wrong by $2 more dollars.  We figured that the servant prolly charged us for the rice (which costs $1 as stated on the menu), but take that into consideration, the total is still wrong by $1.  This is our conversation with the servant thereafter:

Me:  Sorry sir, I'm just wondering if you charged us for the rice?

Servant: Yeah I did

Me: Well, I don't think we should be charged for the rice, my dish was really really salty (pointed to the dish, it was very black...), I just wanted some more rice to go along with it

Servant: What?! it's like that..blah blah blah...(turned to the chef and spoke in Thai language very loudly)

Chef: You know what??? you don't like it?! 99% of the people like it!!!

[some arguement here, I was very mad at this point]

Me: OK fine, even if you charge us for the rice, it's $1 as listed on the menu, but the total is off by $2

Servant: No!! It's $2!!

Me: The menu says $1!

Servant: We changed the price long time ago!! The price on the menu is wrong!!!

Me: What?! shouldn't we expect to pay as according to what's on the menu?!

We argued for the next 5 minutes, with the sevant pointing his fingers 3 inches in front of my face and cursing at me. I certainly did not pay that extra $1.

I'm the type of person who cannot stand rstaurants delivering this type of service and still make money.  If you are like me, please do me a favor and stop letting Thai Tom earn our money.  Why don't we support other good quality restaurants who actually care about their customers?

If you really want Thai food on the Ave, try Little Thai, Thaiger Room, or Thai 65.  Their food is just as nice as Thai Tom.

I'd give it a 5, but I'm really not a fan of waiting, and waiting, annnnnnd waiting. One time, I waited 30 minutes for them to open, but definitely worth it.

I always order their spicy noodles with chicken, sort of like phad see ew, but with a melange of veggies. Ode to the WIDE RICE NOODLES. That''s all I've ever ordered, and all I ever will.

Thai Tom's is the only Thai place I know of that has created a gaggle of certifiable Thai food junkies loitering by the door, waiting for the chance to eat.

I view the flaws of this place like filters to prevent said gaggle from growing to unruly proportions.  So it goes, Thai Tom's is:  small, the purveyor of abrupt and sometimes strange service, certainly not to lab quality cleanliness, and cramped (if you sit by the bathroom, you will be blessed by the unique smells of many a visitor).

The food here is rich in deep, alive, uncooked down flavors and a bit rough around the edges.  On a scale from 1-5 a 3 could range from a 1.5 to a 4.5.  The dishes always seem to be slightly different.   The food can come out charred, especially the noodle dishes.  Personally I enjoy it, but this is a divisive issue; my friends and cohorts seem to be split into two camps on this matter.   Every dish here is delicious, the curries, the noodles, the soups.  I love the phad thai here and won't get it anywhere else, it is rich with pea-nutty undertones and slightly charred; a far cry from the sweet sugary stuff you get elsewhere.

So it's true:
* People go to Thailand & miss Thai Toms.
* Some people believe the "Little Thai Express" is a mythical creature.
* & one should be aware of the signs of addiction before attending

(Some key ones include: (1) Increase or decrease in appetite; changes in eating habits, unexplained weight loss or gain (2) Smell of substance on breath, body or clothes (3) Change in overall attitude/personality with no other identifiable cause (4) Carrying around gold-plated chopsticks in a custom-mad holster (5) Unexplained silliness or giddiness (6) Secretive or suspicious behavior (7) Change in activities; loss of interest in things that were important before)

Being aware makes one much less likely to fall victim.  Be safe and watch out for your friends and loved ones.

Thai Tom I love love love you.  Is someone who works here named Tom? I hope so cause when I think of mens Thai names, I think Tom.

The food here is very good. It's cool to sit at the counter and watch the genius wok-master wield his pans in a fiery display of Southeastern Asian kickassedness.  I have no idea how to write these reviews.

B-ware: I have lost two dates to Thai Tom due to the weather. The weather inside the joint.  They like to keep the doors open even on the coldest of nights.  I have had two dates make me leave because they were toooooo cold to stay there.  Needless to say I don't see them much anymore.  My love for Tom is far too strong.

The food here is addictive.  This is the kind of place where you
sit down and even before your food arrives you are already salivating
thinking about what you are going to order the next time you come in.

The prices are totally great.. 6.99 - 7.99 for most entrees.

Wear a coat, sit at the counter by the flames and action, order you food with 4 stars, and stop crying.

Oily. Spicy. Terrible.

I ate here because everyone recommended it. I hated it.

The food was so spicy it made me sick. Then, later, I was coughing because it was overspiced and it burned even worse! Water did nothing. And based on the [un]sanitary conditions, I wouldn't have dared ask for milk.

Maybe this place was good once, but it's definitely not now.

Hooray for George and Thai Tom!  Yes, folks, his name is George and not Tom.  He's working his ass off right there in front of you at the counter and the place ain't that big; introduce yourself.

By the way, he also happens to be brother-in-law to Golf, who owns and operates Phayathai on Lake City Way.  I highly recommend Phayathai as well.

Watching George cook is like enjoying the performance of a virtuoso symphony conductor. He's the master of the wok and the spice.  A pinch of this, a dash of that, reach behind, toss it in, move those woks on and off the fire.  Notice how he always tastes the curry?  He's a perfectionist.

Oh no!!!!  You saw a cockroach?  Cover your foodie eyes!  I recommend you don't drive into the alleys of downtown Seattle, behind all the preciosa establishments you croon for, or you may just catch a glimpse of all the cockroaches AND rats scurrying to and fro.  Trust a woman who worked in food service for over a decade - cockroaches happen.  They're workin' on it.

I love this place and was more than impressed.  The food is excellent perhaps the best I have tasted and I am an affecionado for sure.  Thai is my favorite food and I eat it all the time probably 6 times a month.

The atmoshpere is great!  The service excellent (It runs like a well oiled machine) very impressed with the whole thing.  Love the chef he is awsome to watch.  Wow!

A must for everyone!   Ohh get the panang for sure or the swimming rama.

Thai Tom is small and cramped.  My party of 4 waited 30 minutes before they opened and still had to sit at seperate tables.  I didn't see any of the roaches others have but it was so dark in there it was hard to tell.  The food was good but I ordered Pad Thai it as hot as could be made and it was not hot at all.  I guess it depends on the dish because the dish my friend orderd as 3 star was pretty spicy.  Don't see that I will go out of my way to come here again the lack of seating and waits kills that chance.  If the food was amazing I would consider but it is not the best thai I have had.
