I'm Asian, and I love my Azn markets ^_^
This 99 Ranch Location is pretty empty compared to other locations I've been to. I came here on a trip down to Socal late at night ( 8:30p ish? ) so I can't say my review will be too elaborate, but I'm a fan: super clean store, large selection of produce, and parking is very easy to find. -

Free Samples Galore! I felt like I was at Costco! I should go to the supermarket more often on the weekends =) Ice Cream, Sausages, Curry Rice, Dumplings, Drinks, Fish balls, etc...OMG Yums! I was beyond stuff from lunch but it didn't stop me from eating more. Free samples, heck yeah, I'm there! I only sampled and didn't buy anything, Oops! =P
The supermarket was fairly clean, unlike the one in Gardena, OMG, extremely dirty and smells like raw sewage...Yuck! They have a great selection of veggies, meats, snacks, baked good and prepared food. Happy sampling and shopping! =) -

What can I say? Chinese markets that have soy sauce in it's own aisle! I love them all.
This place is super busy and don't come here if you need to get in/out really quickly. All I needed was some soy sauce and chili sauce and it took over 20 minutes. Ouch. -

Usually we go to the Chino HIlls' store. But I love this market. And the surrounding mall of Chinese boutique stores. The smells, the produce, the meats, the sample tables. Today...way too busy. Way too crowded.
Just wish people wouldn't try to knock me over. My son when he was little (he's now 35), called L A's Chinatown "push-and-shove town". This still applies here. An old guy set me spinning when he deliberately rammed me with his shopping cart and hooked my purse. Whoa! Didn't see that coming. And then he was gone.
Maybe because it was a weekend? Maybe because he was an anarchist? Maybe because he scored extra discount points at the cashier because of my naturally greying hair?
Note to self - wear turban, protective body armor, or ninja suit and only come on weekdays.
Oh yeah. And bring your own shopping bags. This is LA County. They charge for bags. Somebody is getting filthy rich off unsuspecting IE'ers.Listed in: Wendy's Markets, Life without fish and…

Seriously, this has got to be the worse, most crowded, most expensive 99 ranch in 50mile radius. Trust me, I've been to all of them!
I only come here for the free food samples on weekends since I'm a poverished girl with too many credit card bills - curse those shopping malls! and I can't afford to pay gas to drive further to a nicer 99 ranch market. So I put up with older asian ladies elbowing me while I'm trying to buy 2 oranges for lil o' me; having animal blood sprayed on me in the butcher section; and stinky water showered on me at the fresh fish tanks.
By the time I get to the checkout... thankfully alive, I look like I've been fighting a war in Southeast Asia. Then, I realize they don't give out grocery bags anymore! So I have to carry 6 apples in my armpits back to the car! So classy! -

PEI PA KOA IS ON AISLE 4 NEXT TO THE HONEY.
(That's all you really need to know when you have a sore throat)
I don't reside in LA anymore, so for the rest of us visiting: don't forget to bring in your grocery bag... because of county legislation, they don't give grocery bags (paper or plastic). Good job, eco team, for making me look like a mini thief with all the jars of Pei Pa Koa that I bought. -

THIS 99 RANCH is WHAT 99 RANCH LAS VEGAS SHOULD EMULATE
This is my favorite 99 Ranch Market. Stopped in here to buy cookie gift for our friend who we'll meet at Cocary Shabu Shabu for dinner just down the road. Ended up of course buying snacks for ourselves too. The "Khoung Guan" orange cream waffers and "Tablemate" rice crackers were super fresh. Because they are such a high volume store I never have a concern for stale shelf products.
And, our friend loved the "I Mei" French cookies with the Eiffel Tower impression. Luckily the check out supervisor took note of our purchase and came up with a special gift bag specifically for the "I Mei" French cookies.
As for my tagline wish, it will never happen like a sweet smelling durian. -

THEY DON'T GIVE OUT PLASTIC BAGS~!
Contrary to some of the review.s, this isn't necessarily the case for all 99 Ranch so it's not because it's a "Chinese" thing. This no plastic bag thing applies to all grocery stores in unincorporated areas so it could happen to non-chinese grocery stores too.
But yeah, remember to bring your own recyclable bags unless you want to pay for the plastic bags. I believe they're charging like 10 cents per bag or something.
Like all 99 Ranch, this place is a bit dirtier than say a Ralphs or Alberstons but hey, it is what it is. They they all the essential stuff that is needed for cooking all kinds of asian meals so I'm here a lot. I usually come here to stock up on fresh protein such as pork, beef and chicken. They fresh produce is pretty good and they offer a variety of things.
I do like that they have a cooked food section inside so if I feel like some bbq pork or roast duck, I don't need to make another stop. -

Craving Lychee drinks so I ventured to 99 Ranch Market.
Parking=Bad
Asian Driving=Very Bad
Parking+Asian Driving=Me turning into the Innovator of Violence
found a 30 min parking spot and entered on my mission
Wow Traffic inside the market too...I had a cart unfortunately because I was going to stock up. ClusterF of people in the fresh seafood area.
Wanted to buy the chicken buns but forced myself past.
Got canned Lychee for 1.09 on sale.
Got box Lychee juice package of 6 for 1.88 on sale.
Got box Soy Bean juice package of 6 for 1.88 on sale.
Got canned Lychee juice for .69.
Got canned Jelly drink for .59
Got Oolong tea 25pk for 1.90
check out and they didn't have bags, if you want a paper one they are .10 each...didn't mind...save the earth
Stopped by Lolicup and get a Lychee Jelly Milk Tea for 2.65.
Won't do this again..unless I need more Lychees. Anyone know where I can buy a Lychee Tree? -

The women at the food counter were annoyed but I got away with it playing the ignorance card.
Produce section is nice and pretty big.
The seafood counter here is not as nice as Chino Hills.
They have a lot of little shops inside the entrance.

Since when did 99 Ranch turn into a Costco? There were tons of sample table set up throughout the store today. It was grazing paradise. Too bad I was full from lunch already.
I stopped by to pick up a couple packets of fish ball with masago filling but ended up getting a bunch of other stuff. My trophy find was the Korean Morning Rice drink. http://www.yelp.com/bi... YES! I finally found it after three months. Didn't find it in a Korean market in Little Tokyo but in a Chinese market in Rowland Heights. Haha. I guess I should have checked 99 first. This particular store has a huge selection of Asian items.
The produce is always cheaper plus better variety than regular chain markets. The same goes for meat. They have fish tanks in the back and sell live fish. Just pick your victim and the butcher will do the rest. There's also a bakery and a deli with a huge section dedicated to hot and cold deli snacks. It's really hard to leave without grabbing something.
The only minus is that Rowland Heights is an unincorporated area of LA County so no plastic bags to carry your loot. Bring your own bag or put your purchase back in the cart and wheel it to your car. This is still a new concept for me. -
Review from Judy H.
99 Ranch is great, no matter which one I go to. The Desir bakery is my favorite! They have cheap but GREAT tasting breads! Also, their premade and packaged food such as beancurd thread is also excellent. You can find everything you need here to make a delicious meal. Sometimes they give out free samples of food like fried dumplings or miso soup. It's so random! Haha. I freaken love it!
There are also a bunch of small shops on the sides as you enter the store. One of them is another bakery and they have the BEST pineapple buns! My boyfriend is Taiwanese and he says they are just like the ones they sell in Taiwan! =] He usually cleans them out of their pineapple buns, so if you find that there are no more, you can blame my boyfriend hahaha.
IMPORTANT: They do not bag your groceries anymore. Bring your own bags! Unless you want to pay like 10cents per plastic bag.Listed in: Drinks & Desserts

I liked the one in Chino Hills. It's more sanitary...this place is a bit crowded because there is alot of restaurants so it's hard to find parking like Class 302 and Happy Harbour...But overall this place is ok.

What do you get when you mix really stinky asian stuff, an arcade, a boba place, an optometrist, and a few asian restaurants? BLAM! 99 RANCH MARKET!
Don't get me wrong, I don't have anything against this place. You can find all the weirdest asian foods and spices at this place. Great selection of fresh meats and fish, nice asian bakery, large variety of tea from green to jasmine to oolong to ginger. Gets packed on the weekends so come during the week and park as far away from everyone as possible because this place is Asian invasion! THEY WILL HIT YO CAR!
if you're hungry try the Capital Seafood restaurant. LEGIT! It's cheap and delicious! -

I use to come here every week for groceries with the parentals when I went to high school.
I initiated today's visit based on my search for the best bakery in Rowland Heights area, and this one has a built in bakery in 99 Ranch, and I happen to visit Diamond Bakery, which was in the same block of stores.
Milk Cream Bun ($0.79/ea)
- Mediocre at best. They have the flavors right for the filling, but the bread tasted stale and there was a hint of bbq pork flavor in the bread, as if they didn't clean the machine before using it for the next item.
Apparently 99 Ranch has gotten rid of plastic bags entirely, and now if you're Asian, you just throw all your items in your cart and take them to your car. To use brown paper bags, it will cost you an ADDITIONAL $0.10 per bag. Great job trying to save the environment, but how am I suppose to carry all my food?
I stopped shopping here years ago because the prices are better else where. -

I usually come here to get meat while shopping for spices I can't get in American markets, but the meat quality has dropped considerably. Sure, it's cheaper than buying from Albertson's, but it isn't worth it. Their 'fresh' produce has suffered similar decay.
Spend an extra 2 bucks a pound to get palatable meat across the street. I was also here once after they removed plastic grocery bags. I got $100+ worth of stuff and totally forgot that they no longer provided bags, so I asked them if I could take two of the cardboard boxes that I saw their workers throwing out (they looked like instant noodle boxes or canned beverage boxes) so that I could carry my items, but they refused.
Seriously? They were throwing them away but still would not let me have anything to carry dozens of items in despite my having purchased so much from them. I ended up making 3 trips to and from my car somewhere in the back of the packed parking lot. Not coming back here again unless there is something sold here that isn't sold anywhere else. I don't foresee this in the near future, though. -
Review from Kathy W.
Inside the 99 Ranch is Desir bakery, Japanese and Chinese Togo for cheap. In the Chinese togo section, one can get a 3 item combo for $5.29. Also during lunch time on the weekends they have samples around the store, but don't get too excited because only Costco has "sample lunch."
The market is kept clean. Good place to get your groceries and Asian snacks if you're in the area. Probably the best you'll get in Rowland Heights since they don't have much Asian markets compared to San Gabriel Valley. -

One of my favorite Asian grocery. It is huge and they have wide selection of brands- I mean international varieties of food brands! You'll find Chinese, American, Filipino, Mexican, Columbian and Japanese brand names. I'm not sure if they also have Korean brand or even more than that. They just have everything! The produce also is amazing- too many fruits and vegetables to choose from. Although, do yourself a favor and bring a coat BECAUSE IT'S FREEZING IN THIS AREA.
I always come here for my Sencha green tea and Milo. I also love their bakery section. Those Pork Sung Bun and Blueberry Cheesecake are bomb! Not to mention their cheap too- about $1 for the pork sung bun and $3 for the cheesecake. They also have a fast-food section inside, but I haven't tried it yet.
I love that they have the brand MR YEO green tea- the sweet one. This tea is soooo delish and you can find it in 6-pack cartons or in-can. They also have the best tasting coconut juice inside- Youngs. In the ice cream fridge, I grab the Mada-em Green Tea ice cream because it is so delicious! They also have fresh fish and crustaceans inside the market. This place is always packed on weekends. They accept card and yes they have cash back up to $40 maximum only.
WARNING: Very tough parking on weekends. Their parking lot is always full. -

This place always has what I need in stock... except for rice that is... Their bakery is always stocked (breads & plenty of that Japanese-style cheesecake!), there's always plenty of siao gai & charsiu (Soy chicken & bbq pork). Produce is always in stock and is ridiculously cheap! The produce here seems generally fresher & better quality than some other ranch 99s. I love that I can get an entire bag of ginger or garlic for the same price that other grocery stores charge for ONE piece! I love their selection of frozen rice dumplings (pork & mushroom)! And their fish and meats selection is fresh and usually have some REALLY good deals, like pork butt for 1.39/lb! Everything you need to do your homemade wontons, brisket soup and everything in between!
They've got everything you need for the Chinese New YEAr, i've never seen the shelves overflowing & so many workers buzzing around like bees. Although this one seems a bit smaller than the one on Azusa, it's got a great meat & produce section. and the charsiu here is particularly tasty! (Get the dark meat pieces!)Listed in: All that has soy is not Asian

I come here for all my Asian grocery needs. Products are good. The bad is the parking lot (park far if you don't want any scratches or dings) and the fact that I get cat calls from the people in the fish department on occasion.

This is probably one of the worst Ranch 99 Market, if not the worst.
The first time happened when I bought the packaged udon from the last isle close to the veggie/fruits section. Trying to cook it right after I got home, open the pacakge, OH SHXX.... a strong foul, sour smell came out right into my nose...Fine, maybe it was bad luck, good thing I bought 2 of them. Open the 2nd package. WTH, why does it smell the same? Maybe from the previous package, so I walked away threw away the bad one, then came back. The foul/sour smell still in the 2nd pacakge!? I must be lucky that day. The expiration date on both pacakge were smirred so couldn't really tell if anything going on...
The second time, it was long time after the first time I got the spoiled udon noodle. Again this time I wanted to cook the Taiwanese style chow-mein, happened to ate dinner around that area, so I went to get the noodle. I didn't look at the expiration date since... if you do, alot of the stuff doesnt have expiration date in 99 so you will probably end up buying nothing there...Just grabed one pacakge of noodle and go. Next day, prepared all the ingrediance which took me over half hour, stir fried everything then last the noodle. as soon as I start to stirred everything, I found black small dots inside the noodle... took a closer look, WTH....... Molds, flip the noodle, more molds.....Enough said? (No, I didnt put pepper or anything resemble to the black dots... it has tiny fur hair like around the dots....)
So there my friend~ You want to try your luck? Go there and grab something.... I think I am going to get my lotto.... -

I wish there was half star ratings, this place is a hit or miss sometimes.
I have to admit its ooookay spot for a quick cheap lunch. I can get Chinese lunch box or Japanese bento/sushi But I'm very weary on the quality and freshness of their products.
Not once but twice have I seen them sell expired food. Took home seaweed to only find out its 4 days old and starting to pickle and diffidently give off a funky smell. I wouldn't even know it was packaged well enough or so I thought. It took some "arguing" with the customer service desk to get a refund, which should not have been necessary.
I figured let it go, they just didn't catch that batch and went back again only to find molding uni. It wasn't even a little mold, it had a decent amount of green and white patches! They had the balls to put it out there and try to sell it! The funny thing is the label says "Fresh Uni"... by whose standard! Is there no quality control?
It makes me think twice before I buy food again there... will this lunch give me food poising? -

This 99 ranch market has a different (and I think, more extensive) stock of goods from the 99 ranch in rancho. I love that I can get a boba tea from class 302 or lollicup (if Im feeling cheap) to drink while I shop. Unfortunately, I went mid-afternoon on a saturday....The parking lot was literally a parking lot for all the cars waiting for spots. And with all the silly drivers in rowland, I was a little nervous.
They have a good selection of produce as well as packaged foods. All the check out stands were open to accommodate the plethora customers (thank you). :)
I would definitely recommend this location over the rancho location. But do not come during rush hour..... -
Review from Ivan R.
Some guailo are scared off by the parking lot, often as busy as the 60 freeway that it sits next to. Surgical mask covered Mercedes drivers, along with random Asian buslines, competing with you for that parking spot...
But you're tough, even if you've gotta park far, you'll find a spot, knowing the experience will be worth the walk...The 99 Ranch has got it all...
I need a wide-angle Broadway mirror, some non-slip Razo pedals and a new My Shaldan for my car...You've got it!
Some arm-length driving gloves and a super-visor sun hat, so people don't confuse me with a dark-skinned laborer...You've got it!
Deep-fried shark steak...You've got it!
I need a $200 rice cooker that plays my favorite Tarcy Su melody when my rice is ready...You've got it!
Wash down a hot dog bread with my choice of UCC, Hello Boss, Mr Brown coffee drinks, or maybe a refreshing peachie brack tea from the attached Tapioca Express...Done!!
Carts crashing into me as I walk the aisles, Mexican baggers staring at me, wondering why I'm shopping here rather than the Northgate on Valley, or at least the Albertson's on Colima. Why?, because I know what to expect...and the 99 Ranch, never lets me down!!
_____________
Notes:
* They will deep fry your seafood for you at the meat counter at no extra cost, but you want to get there early as I don't believe they change the oil until the end of the day.
* Walking around the market, and you begin to realize that you don't know how to cook pork uterus? Don't worry, you won't have to starve...there are many restaurants inside the market, in the plaza and more across the street...Listed in: Adventures of a Foreign Devil…

If you're Asian, you've been here. One of the busiest, if not the most out of all 99 Ranch Markets.
This and Hong Kong Market used to be the only two major Asian markets in the area when I was growing up. I remember the times when I played/watched other played Street Fighter 2 at the arcades inside the plaza. I also remember the time when my mom got in a fight at the eyeglasses store for free sunglasses (which were crappy btw). Many tour buses would gather here because of its central location.
For those who don't know why the name, 99 is used to represent longevity since the number 9 pronounced in Chinese is also a homonym for "long time". Also, the company's slogan is "For 100, We Try Harder".
Their seafood is not so fresh and I would recommend getting it at a Japanese market like Nijiya, Marukai, or Mitsuwa instead. Meat, fruits, and vegetables I would rather get at a Korean market such as Super H Mart or Do Re Mi Supermarket because they are usually cheaper and fresher there. They do have average qualities of prepared foods such as stuffed bao bao that might be worth getting.Listed in: 99 Ranch Market Nationwide…

Clearly, my people (East-LA-County Chinese Americans) be making lots of love!!
Cause we obviously reproducing like bunnies - &/or (more likely) getting all of our extended families to migrate to the Rowland Heights/Walnut/Diamond Bar/Hacienda Heights/Nogales area.
I grew up in the neighborhood. Used to come here frequently, and yes, it was always fairly busy. Busier than, say, a Vons or Ralphs.
I stopped by this past weekend to pick up some live crab.
Holy sh!t. That wasn't anything compared to what it is today.
Come here if:
a) you absolutely LOVE the game SARDINES.
b) you think weaving through countless moving obstacles and fellow competitors with your shopping cart sounds like a great workout.
I just don't think I can hang with it. -

This place is really fun to shop in, especially if you like getting run over by shopping carts. Doesn't matter what time you come its PACKED with people. I usually come for the fresh veggies and seafood. But they do have just about anything you could want.
Inside they have a deli with cooked food, a bakery, and a small specialty liquor store. The prices are reasonable and the quality good. I love shopping here because its close to my favorite dim sum spot, and a great vegetarian restaurant we frequent often.
It's much more fun and interesting to shop here then Ralph's or Albertsons. Those place are boring. Here you go to the meat department and they have fish and seafood swimming in tanks, every conceivable part of any animal butchered and ready to cook. It's really interesting to just walk past the meat department. Not for the faint of heart. -

I've came here at least 15 times for their sushi and sashimi. All the selections are quite fresh and very affordable, at only $5-7 a plate. They offer a variety of classic rolls, sashimi bowls, nigiri, and thick slices of sashimi. One item gets you pretty full, including the fat rolls. If you don't see what you want, you can ask the chefs to prepare it for you. My favorite is the salmon bowl: thick slices of salmon sashimi, spicy tuna tartar, and salmon roe over plenty of good-quality sushi rice, served with traditional garnishes. This is not something I would expect to find at 99 Ranch Market but I'm glad I did! Super yummy.
The plentiful Chinese bentos are quite steal as well. Their boba milk tea has a nice flavor and is only 99 cents! -

Probably the most Asian 99 Ranch Markets of the dozen or so 99's I've been to through out California.
It's a little on the small side and situated in a small mall.
The store was pretty neat. The prepared food area had more variety than other 99's.
Not much else to say that I haven't said about them in my other reviews except I don't think I would come here much because I hate the traffic in this area. -

Growing up in Socal, there were three places that stand out in my mind. My house, my mom's restaurant, and the 99 Ranch Market in Rowland Heights. I've longed moved out of my house in Riverside, my mom sold her restaurant years ago but the 99 Ranch Market is still there.
Solid as a rock.
Every weekend (or at least it felt like it), my parents would make the 30 minute drive from Riverside to eat dim sum in the area and then go to 99 Ranch afterwards. I didn't understand why my mom would shop there instead of at the local Ralph's but when I moved into my first apartment in Berkeley, it dawned on me. Where else could I find bok choy, shrimp chips, oyster sauce, and have a fish deep fried on site all in one place? Damn straight, 99 Ranch.
There's a debate on whether it's called 99 Ranch or Ranch 99 but the linguist in me says "Neither is right or wrong, they're just different." Stop whining and take pleasure in being able to say "I'd like that fish right there and could you deep fry it?"Listed in: 99 Ranch vs. Ranch 99 - FIGHT!

Oh 99 Ranch... Bring your game face, shrink your personal space bubble, and bring a car you don't mind getting dinged.
Then you can stand in awe of the gigantic produce section, the fish in tanks, and the bloody rows of meat.
If you're looking for any special Chinese food/ingredient, chances are, 99 Ranch will have it -- fresh, frozen, canned or boxed. YUM! I think its worth fighting the crowd. -

I have been going to this place for 18 years now (wow, am i really that old?), and this place has grown from a hole in the wall to a much more crowded whole in the wall. The parking is terrible, the Asian old drivers are mean as hell and can't drive, the roads are bumpy and need to be fixed...
BUT I LOVE THIS PLACE!!!
You can get seafood, meat, veggies, fruits, everything for cheap here! Just last week, I bought a rice cooker for $20!! The cashiers puzzle me sometimes, do they speak Mandarin, Cantonese, or Vietnamese? Not really sure, but I always speak to them in Mandarin while the Mexican grocery boy checks me out.
Beware: On the weekends, the lines are usually REALLY REALLY LONG. -
Review from Ian W.
When come out to California to visit my extended family, I'll make a shopping trip to the 99 Ranch Market in Rowland Heights, my favorite location. Stepping inside this market feels like stepping into a mini mall where everything is in a foreign language and as a third generation Asian American, I don't understand or can't speak damn word. I'll just go by the pictures in the sales flyers and visual display of items in the store.
I'll stock up on a variety of items including dry items, produce, really smelly fish & seafood, meat, and Magnolia's ice cream and we'll have a feast later that night. I'll even grab some taro buns for the road too!
The 99 Ranch Market has really great prices and great sales for hard to find items I won't find anywhere else. Back on the East Coast, we have plenty of 99 Restaurant locations, but it's an All-American casual restaurant chain unrelated to the 99 Ranch Markets. -

Slightly less clean and a tad too messy for my tastes, but I feel right at home. Nightmare of a parking lot - but the traffic issues are on par with other Chinese supermarkets. Face it, Chinese women just don't know how to drive.
Extensive amount of vegetables, seafood, meat, dry foods, noodles, hot food area is decent, slightly messier than my last review. All in all the veggies are fresh and the meat looks good. The lines are long but it's worth the wait for cheap fresh vegetables. It's just like any other Ranch 99 but slightly disheveled. Everything is in the correct place, but it just looks kind of old.Listed in: The best of SGV, RH, It's a Recession!
