This is a great little market, you can find some of the most interesting items for sale here that nobody would believe exists!
Most of the time I'm grabbing various drinks, maybe not the alcoholic type but they have all sorts of wonderful treats here. The prices are very fair, and most of the time they're actually on sale. I just love it!
This was the first place I bought Pocky, and several other wonderful treats. They also have fresh meats and seafood to try out, along with a ton of different types of noodles that I've enjoyed, but mainly udon. You can also ask the workers who sell all the seafood to prepare your food and even deep fry it for a fair price.
I also have lunch there sometimes, it's a nice little buffet area with some very interesting food to enjoy. For the price and the amount of food you can stuff inside those containers, it's a great deal.
The only cons would be that some workers can be rude sometimes. Some also won't help you out and tell you to find things yourself, even after some items tend to get placed in new locations. I really can't blame them, I'm not the happiest when I'm on the clock, and I enjoy shopping so I don't mind browsing around and finding all sorts of new stuff. -

what you pay what you get...
It's cheaper than most of the supermarkets, Ralohs, Vons, Whole Food, Trade Joe's...
that's why I do grocery shopping here once a while for meat and produce. The reason why I only give it a three-star review is becuase I just found out the white toast I got from their bakery two days ago had mold!!!! The package even print "sell by 4/24", which is yesterday!!
This is the second time happened to me.
Last time, it was a brown onion. It was rotten inside when I cut them into half. -

Got here at 9am during the week. There were plenty of parking spaces still available & not too many other people inside. I was able to zip through the aisles to shop. I bought fresh baked bread at the bakery & on the way out I stopped by the self-serve buffet to check out the Chinese breakfast. I got a sticky rice roll, egg tart & a red bean puff. They were still warm when I got home. Yum!

Of the two Irvine 99 Ranch Market locations, I prefer this one. Yes, it's older but they have a much better meat/fish selection in the back. I love the BBQ pork they sell at the hot line area, I find it's better than what they have next door at Sam Woo even. Actually, anything in the BBQ area is good, pork, duck, chicken, YUM! Get the three delicacies, any three BBQ items for about $7 on rice, it's a deal and half. I also love watching all the old people at the 'fill your own box' hot line, they know how to get the most bang out of their dollar! Tip: fill it upside-down so that you put the food in the non compartmented lid area, more room for food ;)

The fish is not the freshest. You would be better off buying your sashimi at mitsuwa. However, Ranch 99 does have a wide selection of packaged food and other products. Store is cluttered and a bit disorganized. There are better choices out there...

My first time here one the way home and i was a lil bit disappointed that their bakery ran out of ube bread granted it was in the evening and they almost ran out of anything bread. In spite of this, my girlfriend and i managed to collect a few groceries while here, although I would prefer getting my ube bread supplies at the clairemont location.

I grew up in Alhambra/MPK so having an asian store close by was always convenient and second nature. 99 Ranch has good deals on produce and meats. It also allows me to cook authentic asian dishes I crave now and then. This location is fairly clean and organized. Service is okay, not bad and not good. As I mentioned prices are cheap but quality of produce is just okay. I've had sweeter and fresher produce elsewhere. Guess its true you get for what you pay for. This location is convenient as it has Sam Woo right next door so after grocery shopping you can go grab something to eat.

I was really disappointed with this market the first time I came here and I continue to be disappointed each time I am back. They don't seem to have the standard brands that I expect to see and usually buy at the asian markets back home.
The fresh produce section is good and I am happy to report at least /some/ of my favourite snacks are available. The bakery is below mediocre and lacking in quality, taste, and freshness. The pastries always look good, but never quite are able to match up to even my lowest expectations. Ew. I also bought some of the small ready-to-eat dishes in the refrigerator section and was sorely disappointed by those too.
It's always really busy on weekends. They like to give out free samples sometimes during these rushes.
BUT my final verdict is that H-Mart (the Korean market in Diamond Jamboree is just much more preferable. -

Place is like a white washed 99 Ranch.
Needs more asian stink!
Also why is there another 99 Ranch like 4 blocks away that also Fails? -

You don't realize how great this place and the selection is until you've lived in the midwest. I lived in Southern California for four years before moving to Ohio and this is one of the things I miss most -- cheap, decent produce and Asian groceries. Our biggest Asian grocery is maybe a third of this size, and everything is much more expensive. I come here on every visit just to stock up on tea, cookies, candies, and other groceries that won't set off the security alarms when I go through the airport.

I hate this place. I try to avoid this place as much as possible and I really have to find a better source of asian grocery stores around Irvine.
Any suggestions?
The staff are all rude. And most of the time, I can't get anyone to help me. When someone does come up, they have the look like I just bothered them from their busy workload. I have worked at a grocery store for 3 years and customers were treated with respect and you can take 2 minutes out of your life to help.
Whatever happened to "Treat your customers right, the business will take care of itself" ?
Once I got to the cashier and finalized all my items, I wrote a check and the cashier told me they don't accept checks from other states. What?? I've been going here, writing in the same checkbook, every single time, and yet NOW you tell me you don't accept my check?? It's still money!
The place is dirty, the customers are rude, it's unorganized, and no one speaks english. Urgh. -

I've been going to this 99 Ranch Market for years (a- because it was close to where I lived, b- there weren't that many Korean markets 5 years ago and c- I didn't know there was another 99 Ranch Market less than 5 miles away) and the market hasn't really changed.
It is a good place to find most Asian ingredients (even some Filipino items) that Albertson's/Ralphs/Vons/ whatever else in Irvine won't usually carry. Don't try to ask the staff where items are, they are usually too busy to help/ won't know what you are talking about. Just go up and down the aisles - you never know what you will find that is new and exciting.
I think the one redeeming things about this market is that they will fry your fish for you! Talk about making dinner fast and easy!
Happy Cooking! -
Review from Kari G.
Since it's a franchise, it's not as cheap as the locally owned Asian markets, but they're all still way cheaper than the Albertson's, Vons, etc. The one thing I always get when I'm here is their soy bean milk.

Review from Yuki M.
Not as clean, not as large, not as stocked as other 99 Ranch Markets, but it's Irvine and it'll do.
Seafood is less than attractive.
Produce is less than fresh and limited.
The rest of the store is fairly standard.
This location is fairly small in comparison to other Ranch Markets so come in to buy the basics and be on your way. The bakery section is what you would expect and the outlining stands are, well, standard (medicine, alcohol, snacks, etc.).
I come here to get the little odds and ends that I can't find at the local super chain stores. Generally, Asian markets have lower prices for produce since the turnover is higher than American markets and the loss margins are lower, but with this 99 Ranch, the poor quality doesn't really make up for the low prices.
Asian pears, dried shiitake mushrooms, rices and noodles, and other cookie-cutter ingredients for the kitchen and pantry can be found easily at decent prices.
But in all honesty, I'd rather go to H Mart down the way even though the center is filled with scary ass drivers all lined up at 85 Degrees to buy a freaking pastry then head over to the Guppy and pay $20 for a pile of ice.
eff.

For many years I've called this place Ranch 99, until one day when I was corrected by a caucasian man. Go figure! Lol! I am still not convinced that the sign makes this clear distinction. It's vague, to me.
Anywho...if you are faint at heart - breathe through your mouth and not through your nose. Trust me.
Poorly organized and aisles are not clearly labeled. Sometimes it takes me 15 minutes and multiple visits to various aisles, or so, to find a can of canned chestnuts. You've got to look REALLY carefully. It should not be this difficult.
Oh, and the people...go with suit and armor as you will be pushed and shoved with complete disregard.
Cheers. -

Wow, I was all excited to try to shop here because i was making an asian meal. Big mistake. No one in the store spoke English when I was trying to find things, so it was hard to if they carried what I needed (for example they only sold ginger in large packages - you could not just get a small piece). The store just seems dirty and every time I have gone in it smells fishy.
I bought some veggies and fruit. The things were really not fresh. Both the onion and the peach started to show signs of rot by the next day. Yuck!
Packing always sucks. Not sure why other people go here, but they must - or they are going to Sam Wu. God, I hope they don't buy their veggies next door.
I think this place is for emergencies only. -

As much as I like how there's a 99 Ranch close to where I live, I am sad to say that the produce here is subpar. If items aren't on sale, they're not so cheap. Although this place is pretty crowded and busy, I wonder how can the majority of their produce be wilted, yellowed or bruised. Onions were squishy, broccoli had yellow spots, oranges had brown soft spots, zucchini were bruised, you get the picture.I come mostly on Fridays, assuming things to be fresh because of the people who come grocery shopping before the weekend. Guess I was wrong!
The meat department is satisfactory though. Wide assortment of seafood, beef, pork, lamb, chicken and duck. Average prices but quality is not so bad.
If you can, go to the 99 Ranch on Walnut Ave. instead of this one even though it's further! -

This market is super close to my house and I shop here a lot for my asian groceries. The produce is pretty fresh most of the time, sometime the fruit is hit or miss, depending on the season and how long stuff has been out
Be prepared for organized chaos though - especially on the weekends. I avoid it if at all possible on the weekend. People are all over the place with their carts and no one is paying any attention to where they're going.
I even parked my cart for a bit (bad idea) to walk to another aisle to get something.. came back and it was GONE! There was veggies and meat in it, I was only gone for two minutes. Luckily the staff person who took it hadn't gotten far. She said she took it because no one was around. I mean really..? It's so busy I didn't want to push it over two aisles.
Still, good selection of all the things I need for asian cooking! I have yet to try the bakery and ready made stuff though. -

Just to note, I've been to both this one and the one located in my hometown (Cerritos, CA) these past two days.
I was so happy when I found out there was a 99 Ranch located in Irvine, that meant that I didn't have to shop at Trader Joe's or Whole Foods, and being the Asian shopper that I am, I hate spending *too* money.
My parents, relatives, and family friends (AKA the old people... I mean elders) used to always complain about the price difference between this 99 Ranch and the one located in *city here*. I thought they were just high and being Asian... guess not.
For the two times I've been here, parking wasn't as bad as I expected, and you should always expect the worst when you go to an Asian supermarket. It's actually cleaner that most Asian supermarkets too... so that's a good thing, I suppose?
The selection in their bakery is definitely lacking compared to the one at home. I was very disappointed as I love bread and they had very little to choose from. Their "fast food" section had nothing at all, and it was only 5 PM when I went yesterday.
It seems like when items are not on sale, the items here are more expensive then the 99 Ranch located in Cerritos. Yes, I actually did compare, and there was a difference; I guess your elders are always right (most of the time). -
Review from Judi S.
Even during the week, the parking is challenging here, but I gave it a shot and there I was. I found fresh fish balls, fresh mochi in the bakery department and stuff to make my donburi ikura and sake bowl at home, so that made my evening.

i generally like and enjoy coming to this ranch 99 (yes i'm from norcal). it has all my asian necessities at reasonable prices too! i mostly come here to get some onion chips, tofu, and egg noodles, not much anything else i need.
this place is a little better than other asian places. its usually "clean" by asian supermarket standards and has fast checkout lines. i do enjoy the location of this ranch market since its conveniently just down culver. next to it is a sam woos. -

The Irvine 99 Ranch Market is the largest in that area. The one off Jeffrey and Walnut can't compare in parking, although, let's be honest, parking in any 99 Ranch lot is at your own risk. I like their variety of fruits and veggies, they have a good variety of seafood and meat, and you can always go graze the samples they have on the weekends. They have a bakery off to one corner and a Panda-Express like fast food area, which does not look appealing. And why would you buy BBQ pork or duck there, when you can walk about 50 feet to Sam Woo BBQ and get the real deal?
The bakery carries a few interesting items, but JJ Bakery is about 100 feet away and you know it's fresher there. Overall, a good 99 Ranch is one that doesn't stink like fish and this one passed.
A couple of things that I didn't like was that someone stole my red bean rice cake right out of my cart and they don't seem to carry weichuan brand products because I searched high and low for my favorite dumpling sauce and they didn't have it there. Lame. -

It's an Asian food market. There is nothing this review can do to blow your mind and your perception of 99 Ranch Market out of the water.
However -
They stock an incredible number of varieties of Indomie. It's like Top Ramen, but way more awesome (it was mainstream for a very brief period about 15 years ago), and they even have broth-less versions. I drive all the way out here for my Indomie fix.
Oh yeah, they have sushi-grade fish too and a decent selection of produce. Whatever. INDOMIE. -

This location in Irvine is the best you can get in the area.
Great selection and better pricing than the Walnut location.
It's clean, it's big, and it has what you need. I got all sortsa yummy (and cheap!) greens for my pet bunny here tonight (why does my rabbit love bok choy??). I also wandered through and stocked up on cooking essentials. They have wonderful variety of products and it really lets you be picky. I had to hit up the walnut one later on because I messed up and broke the bottle of chili paste I bought here, and it cost me nearly a whole dollar more at the walnut 99 Ranch -- whyyyyyy??? If it hadn't been nearly 9pm (closing time) and I hadn't needed it for the recipe I was trying to cook I would have just waited till tomorrow to get it here.
I also found some "fresh" steamed pork buns here and got them to try. I wound up eating one in the car on the drive home and it really hit the spot. Their to-go food section was already closed and isn't as big as I'm used to (Makes me miss my SD 99 ranch!!) so I think it was just whatever the bakery made earlier in the day and stuck in their refrigerated display, but still, it was better than buying that frozen crap and re-heating it later. I will definitely be keeping an eye out for them on future visits and seeing if I can get them while they are still hot.
Overall I am a fan of this place. It's cheap, they're efficient, and it's fresh food. I will 100% definitely be back. The only issue I really have with this location is the parking.. it's always so packed!! Especially during the day. They need more parking!Listed in: What's in Irvine?!

Whenever I shopped at 99 ranch, I would always pick up some breads for breakfast. My favorites thus far are taro, pineapple (individual or loaf) and coconut (loaf).
The taro buns are the best! Not very sweet just perfect. They used to run out at the end of the day but they must have figured those really sell. The last few times I was there, they have surpluses of it.
Don't get the green onion buns! They are very oily and salty.
The individually wrapped pineapple is good when you are on a go but I personally like the loaf of pineapple bread. Especially when it's lightly toasted with a spread of butter, it's super good. For me, it's the best part of waking up! -

Why is this place's parking lot a zoo all the time? I arrive to pick up some fish, and see Asian aunties running to their cars w/plastic grocery bags caped over their heads b/c it's raining.
ahh...reminds me of my country. The ghettoness of it all. No umbrella, no problem!
They changed their VIP card policy. Now, you can still get your VIP discount on sale items, with one catch. In exchange you have to give them your checking account routing number to automatically debit your purchases.
I'm not giving you my routing number for anything. What kind of lame policy is that? Heard of Albertson's preferred savings card? Go back to that model, 99 ranch.
What incentive do they have for it? Smells fishy to me.
Speaking of fish, good deals now and then on it. Come prepared to speak w/your hands, because the fish dudes don't speak much English. The only guy who did, was Hispanic.
Thanks dude for deboning my fish for me. 2 stars for understanding a lick of English. -

99 Ranch is where you can get all your asian produce and products for cheap.
We drove all the way from HB to this particular location just to avoid all the crazy drivers in the little saigon area. That and cause I hate driving in crowded places. I also feel this location is a bit cleaner and better organized as well. However, don't think you can escape those wonderful scents from the back of the store....cause you won't.
Only negative about 99 Ranch is that they don't take the American Express Card. -

Great prices and selection in a horrible location. The parking is among the worst in Irvine. Little old people in huge SUV's back out without looking and disregard pedestrians altogether. If you see an open space, it's probably not going to work out. People park ON the lines, crooked as can be. For this, I tend to park next to the bank. The bakery is OK and the store, overall, does not have nearly as much selection as stores like Zyon and H-Mart.

WTH, that was my expression when I walked up in here yestaday!! I was like WTH!?!!?? This 99 Ranch is wayyyyyyyyyyy doper than the one next door to the crib...
First of all when you walk in and there's the lil booth place that sells slippers and jewelery and all kinds of lil asian kniccknaccs. I was impressed! Ok so as i proceeded to gander around, i noticed 3 things: they have CHILI PASTE WITH SWEET BASIL LEAVES in a jar, they also have ANCHOVY AND MUD FISH SAUCE, and CRAB PASTE!! The right kind!!
Mind you, they have this other kind of crab paste at the other 99 Ranch, but it wasn't the RIGHT kind for to make thamakhoong. (Laos for PAPAYA SALAD mmmMmMmm) I was sooOoo happyyyyy!! so i was doing my thang, walk over to the fish section and OMG they have YELLOWTAIL on sale for $1.99!! You know I had to get me some... and they also have GRASS JELLY drink 5 for $1.80!
I was by myself, but I wanted to pass out with all the discoveries and sales and thangs goin on. OVERALL- I am definitely comin back here!!! -

Huge 99 Ranch. Very busy. No fuss, cheap produce and everything you'll need with your meat and seafood needs.
Western foods are cheaper here. Taiwan beer is available. The food court they have is amazing. Self serve portions, so fill that flimsy Styrofoam to-go box to the max. Get geometric with it.
This place is great.
**If you buy alcohol, you need everyone you're shopping with to have IDs, not just the buyer. -

Come at all hours of the day, and you'll leave with plastic bags full of baked goods, even if you didn't plan on getting anything to begin with (:
I really like coming in the morning when they first open. I usually grab some authentic Taiwanese breakfast from the food-to-go station before I step into the bakery. And even after a large breakfast of fried chinese donuts, soymilk, riceball, pork buns, etc., etc., I'm still able to salivate over the freshly baked bread and dessert.
I love their mini custer pies and always walk out the bakery with bags of assorted bread. Prices are decent and cheaper than other Chinese bakeries in Irvine. When I can't make it to the bakery during the day time, it's also an advantage to stroll in here right before they close.
Any bread they have left at the end of the day is on sale for 50cents-$1. They try to get rid of everything at the end of the night in order to make room for fresh baked goods for the next day. The best part besides the price cut is that the bread still taste good and it makes a perfect snack after dinner. -

Review from Will M.
I have been a customer since the early 90s. This particular store is very busy. Like all 99 Ranch Markets, they have some semi putrid smells depending on where the intake and exhaust vents are. When you are in here for more than a minute, like it or not, you will smell like the outgassing from seafood section. Granted, it's not as bad as the many butcher shops in Asian and Mexican markets I've inspected in my job, nor the rendering plants like Baker Commodities in Commerce. So, I only go into this store at night near closing time after I'm sweaty from playing tennis.
Now that's out of the way and I can talk about the stuff they sell. You can get live fish and really fresh fish. There are loads of Asian goods that Vons or Ralphs will never carry. I love the atypical and regular fruits and vegetables. Where else can you get gai lan, diakon, pommelos, bitter melon, asparagus beans, mangoes by the case, and fresh jackfruit and the stink bomb - durian fruit? The produce prices are generally reasonable, and downright cheap in some cases. I once got fuji apples for 69 cents a pound and a case of Kent mangoes for $6.00 for 8 in the summer when Vons sold them for $2 a piece.
Their frozen food section has some great stuff, like lumpia and Mango, Langka, Ube, and Macapuno Ice Cream from the Philippines. There are lots of varieties of frozen dim sum and won ton soup - just add your veggies and BBQ pork you can get in their in store Chinese cafeteria.
I marvel at all their cookies, noodles, soups, and sauces, with many different ethniticites represented like Thai, Vietnamese, Japanese, Chinese, etc. There is an in store bakery, and they have some baked breads and dessets like coconut covered cassava and tarot croissants. Their cheesecake and coconut pastries are among my favorites.
The store sometimes changes their product lines and promotions. Once they had karaoke machines, sometimes they have unique furniture, and other times some gadgets like rice cookers. Some months they'll have live citrus trees that many Asians love, like calamondin or mandarins.
Parking can be tough around dinner time and weekends. But really this store is a godsend for many Asians and Pacific Islanders that need to keep their food at home as close as possible to what they remember in their former homeland. -

5 Reasons why this place has earned 5 stars...
1. 6.99 a pound for LIVE LOBSTER and they steam for FREE!!!
2. 5.99 a pound for LIVE Dungeness CRAB and they steam for FREE!!
3. STARFRUIT
4. Many different choices of Bagoong!
5. Fish Market where they clean and cook your fish for FREE!!! I love me some Pampano!
This place is really cool. It does have a smell, that is because they have an open fish market! Duh! I was pleased to find Filipino, Korean, Thai, Chinese, and Japanese ingredients. Yay for me!! I needed a place to get my fix since I moved to OC. Found it! -

Insider tip (for this 99 Ranch only):
They have both barbequed items with rice and self-serve lunch boxes. It's a bit over $5 for either 2 main items w/rice or noodles or a multitude of items with rice/noodles.
And here is where my tip comes in.
The roasted duck on rice is also about $5 but then they cut it up for you. You get fatty pieces, chewy pieces and useless pieces.
BUT sometimes in the self-serve, there's roasted duck too and if you get here early (11:30 am) they've just set it out and you can fish out all the yummy breast-y pieces and the duck legs yourself. You better know how to recognize duck, because the sign says "sesame chicken."
And if you're extra good, you'll get veggies with your order that you pick out that's not yucky pickled veggies.
But if you're vegetarian, all you get is mapo tofu and scrambled eggs with tomato.
Side note: This 99 Ranch is semi-dirty looking compared to the one on Jeffrey. In addition, this one smells more. -

Surprisingly great selection of vegan and vegetarian foods. I picked up some vegan duck for $1.49 and a few 99cent packages of premade vegetarian curry (with potatoes, onions, and carrots), my girlfriend got a 50cent package of hot and sour udon noodles. Haven't tried the duck yet but everything else has been great, and obviously really cheap.
When I came here a year or so ago, it was much more difficult to be confident in finding vegan/vegetarian options here, but when I went the other day everything was very clearly marked in English. I hope this doesn't come off as disrespectful, but I really appreciate the English labels!! -

Doesn't feel as homey as the one in Rowland Heights, but I've got to say I enjoy not having to fear people running into me, me running into them, or dodging supermarket carts (due to the crowdedness of the Rowland one.)
All the markets pretty much have the same items when it comes to groceries. I haven't found this one lacking in anything on my grocery list.
Their bakery is an exception though. Word of advice, go early on the weekend mornings (around 10:30) because they have BIG shen jian baos (pork buns that are a little fried on the outside for a crispier texture) for about 60cents a piece. It's also a good place if you're craving a fan tuan (chinese fried donut wrapped in rice). It can't beat the one from yi-mei, but can temporarily satisfy those cravings. Another thing that's great was their selection of steamed buns with fillings of red bean, green/mung bean, and even lotus seed. It's what I depend on them for to acompany my breakfasts on the run.
