This 99 is much nicer looking than the one in Daly City which is a little closer to the city for us. If we are in the area then we'll usually make a quick pit stop here to pick up some things.

The hot food is average and if you are feeling lazy then it's ok at a pinch. However I'd steer clear when possible.

There's a nice selection of fruit and veg as well as all your regular Asian dry goods. As it is one of the cleaner one's I've visited I'd have no problem recommending this one over others.

One thing I like about this Asian Market is that they are branded like Starbucks so you can pretty much find your way around.  They try to make all their store "kinda" look the same!  There are a few tweaks here and there generally at checkout depending on the spacing.  This Ranch 99 is on the smaller side so point of entry and exit is tight!

What I do like about this place is the fresh fruit.  I am a big fan of fresh fruit and I buy tons of Sweet Texas Oranges!  Hands down I would not buy any other brand of oranges!  I also buy a box of their champagne brand mango.  It is dirt cheap for under $12 which usually have about 10-12 pieces.  Their Pineapple is usually sweet too and you can't beat it for only $4 at regular price!  And when it is on sale they sell for as low as $1.99 each!

Another good selection here is their wide variety of SUSHI & SASHIMI that you can make yourself!  The TUNA AND SALMON  are fresh and you can buy a tray for under $12 that can feed about 4-6 servings!  They also have UNI, UNAGI and CALIFORNIA ROLL ingredients in a tray too!  So if you like Sushi and Sashimi like me - shop here!

I am also a big fan of fresh seafood so I buy the ones in the tank swimming like the catfish and the tilapia!  Ooh their fresh shrimp in the tank is out of this world and you take them home and steam them!  Fresh, fresh, fresh but pricey!!  By the way, if you buy fish here, they clean them for you, cut them into pieces, you can request to have them steam it or deep fry them for you.  Pretty cool ha?

If you have a sweet tooth like me - they have a huge selection of Asian ice cream including Popsicle and sherberts too!  I like the Japanese Mochi Green Tea ice cream balls and the Red Bean flavors.  I also buy the Magnolia Brand ice cream (made in the USA) and my personal favorite is UBE MACAPUNO (young coconut).  It is really, really good!  You should give it try!

Now at the front of their store near the checkouts, they offer a food buffet.  They have 2-3 side orders for about $7.50 which you can pack it to the max.  As long as you can close the cover you are good to go!  They also offer individual S/M/L/XL containers that you can stuff to the very top too and priced at size.  In general - the small size cost about $3.50.  I usually buy their deep fried prawns and try to pack it as much as it can hold since they charge you per size anyway!  I think this is a great deal because this would normally cost $8  yours for only $3.50.  Big savings here!!

The one thing I think they can work on is their customer service especially at their  food buffet and where you buy noodle soup and duck.  There is also a lack of organization because when you want to order soup it is located to the left and there is a sign that says "order" pointing to the soup but you have to go at the other end of the other line to order.  Very confusing!  Just to give you a heads up that not all the workers are fluent in English so sometimes you have to use body language!  They don't provide the greatest customer service either but like most "Asian Markets" it's not high on their priority.  They figure you'll be back since they have the monopoly.  If that is okay with you, and you have to understand that it can be part "culture" then I recommend giving Ranch 99 a try!  Otherwise - if customer service is high on your list - stick to your local butcher!

Not bad for Asian groceries, better than Marina

Relatively new store, decent produce selection, and good selection of Sheng Kee and Sogo bakery breads.  Inventory looks fresher than at Marina.  The store could be brighter though.

Sometimes you need to read the label...was going to buy some good-looking Ranch 99 bakery raisin bread for cheap, then saw "westcolite" in the ingredients.  Couldn't find it on the internet, except some vague reference to artificial butter flavor, so bummer I had to skip it.

place is okay but I prefer Marina in San Mateo. Brought Tiger shrimp at $7.99 lbs... it was very fishy... I just got them and they are already smelly.... ground pork... same thing..... very smelly.... the veggie does not last very long... at most 2-3 days and it starts to rot or turn brown.... and how can it be a asian grocery store when they do not even carry winter melon? I only come here if I am at Soon Tofu... otherwise, see me at Marina...their price is higher than Marina as well... oh yeah, I would not bother with their hot food.... hot sour soup is awful... the roast duck... well, how can it be roast duck if the skin is not crispy, but soft and soggy... char sui does not taste like char sui.... skip the hot food area...

Worst place ever! I will NOT be coming back! If I could give it a zero star, I would.

I came here yesterday with a few of my Asian friends because we wanted to try some hot food there, for $7.50 you get a combo. Not only was the food oily and disgusting, but the people were rude... I went to ask the people that worked for some soy sauce packets and they started talking to me in Chinese, wth? Do I look like I'm Chinese??? I'm effin Mexican! Then after I told her I wasn't Chinese she ended up throwing the soy sauce packets on the counter towards me and left. SO RUDE!

These people that work there have NO class. They see unhappy and miserable about where they work, so if you want to go there just to get yelled at in Chinese, then this is your spot. Otherwise, I'd say go elsewhere!

I'm here like every other weekend. This 99 ranch seems more diverse compared to other ones. They have a lot of the Asian snacks I like but most of the time I'm sitting outside waiting for my mom and grandma to finish their grocery shopping. And compared to other Asian supermarkets this one keeps theirs clean. I don't have anything bad to say about it.

5 stars to not being carded when I bought a bottle of sparkling sake...one of their specials. Can't forget Kimbo's coconut juice, either.  Or original Calpico.

Considering how I like to eat and cook, I find that 99 Ranch is my preference over all other stores.  This particular store is extra great because the fish and meat departments are clean and smell pleasant, and the to-go food is fresh with some vegetarian options.

Now, this market isn't for everyone. Read between the lines on that last statement. If you can't handle seeing meat in large section, fish with the faces still on, or better yet, just fried fish faces for sale, then this may not be your idea of a good time. But, if you like you prawns flappy and your catfish croaky, and you like having options of what breed of chicken to buy, well my friend, you are in the right place.

Clean unlike other markets *cough* Marina *cough*. Only the seafood area smells like fish not the WHOLE damn place. All-you-can-stuff bento boxes for only $7.50 FTW!

The only thing I don't like about 99 Ranch is they pre-pack all their veggies. It's a smart idea to keep Asian people (such as myself) from digging and clawing through piles of produce. However, not good for people like me who live by themselves and can't eat 2 pounds of bokchoy before it rots.

This Ranch 99 goes against all the stereotypes of an Asian supermarket.  All except for the bad Asian drivers in the parking lot....

    It's large, clean, and spacious.
    Not crowded on weekends.
Offers -fresh- and -local- produce and meats.
    Clean organized shelves.
Small, clean little prepared food/deli area (though haven't tried anything here).
Many open check-out lanes with little to no wait.

Definitely a fan of this Ranch 99 -- if you prefer the experience of a stereotypical Asian supermarket that's small, cramped, crowded and a nightmare to maneuver, go to Ranch 99 in Cupertino.

Friends were heading to Point Reyes for some hiking and oyster shucking this weekend. I wasn't able to make it . Yes, I was extremely green with envy so I did the next best thing I could possibly do. Have BBQ oysters at home!

A dear friend had mentioned awhile back about getting fresh oysters by the bag from 99 Ranch at a decent price. Closest one to us at that time was the Foster City location.  As I walked in, the place was clean and well kept. It did not reek like some asian markets I've been to before. Went straight to the seafood section and was pretty impressed with the selection. They even had fresh sea urchin!

Anyway, back to the oysters....$20.99 for a bag of 60 oysters!!! We grilled these babies on the barbie and they were fresh, tasty & juicy!

It's an Asian Supermarket...what more is there to say about it?! HAHA!

Ok, a bunch of Chinese Fobs working here, who barely speak a lick of English.  You gotta repeat yourself several times sometimes, before they get what you're trying to say.  Other than that, it's cool, I pick up my Asian stuff here when in the area.

There is this one Vietnamese sauce they don't carry though, which is annoying!  What Asian supermarket doesn't have Mam Nem (Vietnamese Anchovy Sauce)?!?!  BOO!!!  Another thing, if you are planning on every making anything with thinly sliced beef or pork and want the meat department to slice it for you.  Guess what, keep it movin' cause they don't do that here!   Makes it hard when I want to make beef spring rolls for dinner!   Blah!

One thing I will say is this.  My hubby and I have been on a fried fish frenzy lately and at Ranch you can pick out a fresh fish and have them deep fry the hell out of it.  Straight goodness for dinner with some rice and fish sauce.  Delish!  Kudos for their fish frying station.  My votes for the fresh Tilapia and Catfish!

Okay, yes, it took me a while to get over the fish smell walking into this place. In fact, it overwhelmed me so much, that it took me damn near a year to decide it was worth shopping here. But, they won me over in the end.

Their prices on fish are just wayyyyy better than other markets. And, it's fresh. I like fresh.

Produce is cheap too, although often you have to buy way more than you want as it is pre-packaged. Oh well, at least it's cheap. They don't have what you need for regular grocery items, but I do buy a ton of meat and fish here. Mostly fish over anything else. It has made our preference of eating fish more often a reality.

So - YAYYYY for that! I can get over the smell for the price savings :)

Forget Safeway - 99 Ranch is the place for groceries.

I do my weekly grocery shopping here. It's spacious, clean, organized, and has incredibly cheap produce! Not to mention plenty of Asian produce that you see marked up at Safeway (ever see how much bok choy is?) or you don't see at all. Of course, this being an Asian market, they don't throw away anything. That means you have to do some work and sift through all the bad/spoiled oranges, bell peppers, spinach and apples to get a good bunch. But I can't get everything here because I know even some things are still cheaper at Trader Joe's (namely their bagged produce like baby spinach and baby carrots).

Spend $30 or more, and you get $1 for every $10 you spend. You can use these coupons for the deli or bakery.

And sometimes they even hand out some samples of their products, just like Costco!

Beware: this place is gets pretty crowded on the weekends, so parking can be tough.

Man, this place has it all. A solid bakery department full of lots of cakes and sweet things, a "buffet" where you load up as much food as you can into a take out box for around 8 dollars, and good dim sum!

Oh, and did I mention it's a market, too? I told you they have everything.

In addition to having everything in one place, they have decent prices and a clean store.

Another noteworthy point is that they're pretty friendly here. When my friends and I were loading up at the buffet, the lady at the register sent us back into the buffet line telling us: "you should get a lot more! you can fill the box to the very top, as long as it closes!" I thought that was nice.

Fresh produce and all kinds of meats (including fish still swimming around in tanks) straight from the butcher.  I get exactly the piece I want and in the quantity that I wanted.

Prices are very good, especially considering their location.

Lots of ethnic sauces and spices, not just Chinese, but I've spotted Hispanic, Indian (Asian), Philippino, Thai ... just to name a few goodies.

They also have a hot food deli with cooked dishes, barbecue meats, dimsum and bakery on the premises.

Spend $30 or more to get coupons redeemable at the deli or bakery.

Oh, the place is well maintained and clean compared to a lot of other markets.

If you've ever wondered what it'd look like if someone emptied out the hillsdale Whole Foods of it's overpriced contents and jammed a ranch 99 back into it (cleaning the various items along the way) --- your wondering can now be resolved.

Clean.  Cheap.  Wide variety.  Always has durian along w/ a bunch of WTF-is-that items.

Perhaps the best place to buy produce in the area?  Always a good, fresh special or two that you can turn into something yum.  I think it generally beats the farmers markets in the area.

Not as good as Berkeley Bowl in terms of mass + quality, but on the other hand: (1) I don't have to cross a b ridge and (2) you are not drowning in people.

Lest you find the atmosphere too disney-esque in it's sanitary glow, you can always buy something from their cafe area for the full "ex" communist worker experience.  The fish can be bracing at times.

My main reason for shopping here is for fruits and vegetables because the quality is good and you can't beat the price anywhere else.  The other day after coming by here and only grabbing a few things I went to Safeway the next day and it seemed like everything was twice the price!  I've also gotten some of the desserts which are really good (if you're here try the cheesecake with fruit on top, it comes in a heart shape so not only does it taste amazing but it's really cute too =D)

And if you're looking for some alcoholic beverages for the evening - come here!  The bottles are cheap!

I have mixed feelings about this place.  In my book, it's OK.  This is a tiny strip mall that consists of restaurants such as Chipotle, Round Table, Starbucks, Tai Wu just to name a few.  The parking is small when there's always a rush of cars looking for parking.  Predominently Asians come to this place and I think more so b/c primarily the residence are Asians and they frequently shop at 99 Ranch.

99 Ranch is a huge, spacious, organized, clean market.  Thankfully this market doesn't wreak funky smells.  They are well stocked but for some reason they don't always have they vegetables that I'm looking for.  There was one time I came in looking for bitter melon leaves - none on their shelves.  I also came in another time looking for fresh okra and sadly I walked out the store within 30 seconds disappointed and drove to Pacific Super Market in SSF which guarantees me what I need.  I come here only when I need to.  Otherwise, I make the drive towards SSF and Daly City to buy asian foods and ingredients; more selection available and cheaper too!

5 stars because they STEAM stuff!! A lot of Ranch 99 markets will deep fry your fish for you, but this place will do that OR STEAM your fish/lobster/crab too!!! and yes, it is FREE. OMG, lifesaver!!

I come here to get a steamed fish or crabs because i don't have a steamer at home (yet.)...seriously saves so much time..only takes 10-15 minutes and you have freshly cooked seafood to add to your dinner.

AND around an hour before closing time, they do these bakery grab-bags that just combines 4 or 5 of the specialty buns and sell them off for cheap.

Yee! Cheap bread and YEE! Steamed fish.. *heartheartheart*

hough I love Marina Foods (see my review,) I love 99 Ranch a bit more as they carry some different items and are cleaner.  It was my first time visiting here since the grand opening in 2004.  The service is friendly with no indifference to non Chinese customers.  I love the selection of meats, fish, poultry, produce, frozen items, and so forth.  FYI, you get coupons for their fast food area with the purchase groceries which is cool as I will return and check out their bakery.  As for their food, I think it is better than Marina; love the sweet & sour chicken and chow fun and will have to try barbecued items next time.  So, for excellent service with a mind boggling selection of Chinese groceries in a clean atmosphere at reasonable prices, 99 Ranch cannot be beat.  Keep up the good work guys.!

This is my go to place for Asian groceries.  It's cheap, clean, and they have a wide selection.

Good:  Great selection.  I can find almost anything I need here...even things I didn't think I would find.  I love their weekly sales...though some things have been on sale for months and it makes you wonder if it's really the true price or sales price.   Their cashiers are great.  Always friendly and smiling, which is noticeable if you're used to the service at other Chinese grocery stores.

Not So Good:  They prepackage a lot of their vegetables and some of their seafood, like the mussels.  I know it's to prevent people to pick through their produce, but (a) it adds more styrofoam to the landfills and (b) I can't tell if there are some moldy vegetables underneath.  Luckily, I haven't found any bad batches!

I also like their ongoing promo where you get a $1 coupon for every $10 you spend as long as you purchase $30 minimum.  The bad thing is that when I'm just short of $30, I end up grabbing a ton of last minute things I didn't really need just to get those coupons!

My favorite 99 Ranch Market's.  Very clean and organized.   Unlike the one in Daly City and Sunnyvale.  They have a produce, meat and fish dept., groceries, hot deli, dim sum, and bakery.

If you spend over $30.00 they give you deli coupons that can be used to purchase hot deli and bakery items.

The price are pretty reasonable in comparison with Marina Market.  Great values on produce, meats, and fish.

So last night, I was went over to my friend Jack's place to help him move his couch. GOD that couch was fricken heavy. GEEZ heaviest couch I've ever moved in my life.

But anyways, so after the couch he needed to head over to Ranch 99 first and then grab dinner after.

My goodness, this has to be one of the nicest Ranch 99's Ive ever been in. Everything is sooo organized, there is no pushing and shoving. Even the customers there said excuse me! I guess its the Foster City vibe. The vegetables were all lined up neatly, it looked like one of those new remodeled Safeways that are popping up all over the place. Even the butchers were not yelling. Everything just looked so clean and neat.

Whats also great is taht they also sell stinky tofu here. They are in small containers, with two pieces each. You gotta fry them or cook them yourself but hey good enough for me.

If only every Ranch 99 was like this.

I'm giving them three stars because whenever I come in here, I can purchase the following items without fail:

    1. Mochi ice cream
    2. Pocky
    3. White Rabbit
    4. Hageen-Daaz Chocolate and Peanut Butter Ice Cream

Minus the rest of the stars for:

    1. Laying down my motorcycle in the parking lot and there being at *least* 100 people to help pick it up but instead NOT
    2. Almost getting hit/run over/killed by crazy drivers
    3. Almost hitting/running over/killing crazy pedestrians
    4. The SMELL
    5. The long, long, long waits at the cash register. And we're talking LONG
    6. The "specials" up at the front that *look* tasty but really tastes like shit on a stick

Not like I would know what it tastes like, but from what sean.o.matic.x tells me its pretty gross.

    :D

PS: the eggs here are super cheap. Why I trust them? Because I'm BROKE.

They have 12 different kinds of dried plum, my favorite. They ALSO have garlic Nagaraya and Poki stix.

    I love this place.

If they only had Sampaloc, that would be awesome.

Someone once said to me that "westerners" are too polite and that "Eastern Asians" are not.  I witnessed this in the store today on numerous occasions and couldn't help but take offence at certain times.

Once I was looking for the chili sauce I love... and a shopping cart of two younger Japanese girls hit me because they were not paying attention.  I know my ass sticks out father than theirs, but damn, I wasn't taking up the whole isle.  Then in line a older lady blocked the way so that I could not put my groceries down until she was completely done.  That's what the dividers are for.

On the other hand the people that work her have ALWAYS been nice and helpful.  I don't mind that they are a smaller store than the one I usually go to because this one is kept cleaner.

I have yet to try anything from the "deli" section other than the dim sum.  Of course its not the best but it does satisfy the hunger.  I like that their pork buns don't seem to be colored and overly gelatinous.  It's not too far for me to go to on my lunch hour but I wish it were closer to my home so that I could take better advantage of the frozen and refrigerated stuff.

What can I say that already hasn't been said, I used to always shop at Ranch 99 when I lived in the Bay Area.  I always come and bring back my stash of BBQ Pork.

This time we had to cater for a party and ordered their fried chicken wings, they are AWESOME ! !

This one is dead....which is good for me....I hate crowds....but considering that it is slow....service should be faster.  Look at least 15 minutes to get someone to take some liquor out of a shelf...and another 5 minutes for someone to get me some dim sum to go....

Otherwise, chinese markets are great.  Their fruits are always cheaper and fresher.  There are asian snacks, candies, and toiletries that everyone should try.

News flash - this amazonian white girl loves 99 Ranch. :D

Hello Boss coffee = staple of our office. Uber-cheap and pretty much as good as the bottled Frappuccinos.

Ramen = another startup office staple. A million different kinds (though Maruchan, Nissin, and Sapporo Ichiban just can't be beat).

Rice crackers, chinese pancakes, tofu, weird snackies, cookies, and candies, etc, etc. I love it all!

The Foster City location is the 'Whole Foods' of all the other 99 Ranch Supers.

Let me explain: Not in the sense that this location carries different or better brands than any other 99's- nor in the sense that there is any ORANICS section with the entire line of kombuncha teas in stock. No, rather in the sense that it is mothereffin' CLEAN in this place. I almost always forget that I'm in a Chinese supermarket during my visits. Absent are the live fish being gutted without the use of gloves. Missing is the blood-spotted baggie handed to you along with your order of 2 lbs of oxtail. As nostalgic as the meat market hustle bustle is, I don't think anyone will miss the occasional fish scale next to your bag of seedless red grapes.

5 stars for cleanliness, great lighting, spacious veggie/fruit section (because God knows how Chinese people maneuver their shopping carts- watch your fingers 'n toes kids) and lastly, a full 5 stars for keeping the pork blood INSIDE the meat baggies.

    Hooray for salmonella-free shopping!!

Something smells fishy around here... oh wait!  It's the store!  It smells like fish... all the time.

I took my 5 year old niece in today and she said "ew, it smells like dead fish!"

But I love love love the produce and the great tea and tea-making equipment.  The produce is fresh and affordable and creative... I added shitake mushrooms to my 4th of July kebabs, to the merriment of the guests.

So yeah - 5 stars for the produce, no stars for the smell.
