i've never had one of their cheesesteaks, but their vegetarian cheesesteaks are AMAZING. they're so good and so huge and so filling. the waffle fries are INCREDIBLE and you get so many.

i definitely love this place, and i have a big soft spot for it (it might be from all the delicious, awful grease) because my friends and i used to grab food there. it's definitely heavy, greasy food but it's so delicious that i just can't say no.

definitely try the waffle fries. seriously.

This placed sure had me fooled. Great Philly decor, and being from Philly, it was wonderful to see tastykakes, and Amorosos signs everywhere. However, this was all well in and good, but the steak failed to meet up to my expectations.

I'll start by saying that if a place manages to mess up a real amorosos roll, it's gotta be pretty bad, and that's what happened here. The beautiful south Philadelphia roll is drenched in grease, making it so soggy I can barely even discern that it WAS an Amorosos.

The meat was practically flavorless. The cheese was good but when you ruin the steak as a whole it doesn't really matter. Anyone can purchase cheese whiz.

I find it funny the New Yorkers that claim that these portions were huge. You've obviously been under the influence of a city that is notorious for under portioning and overpricing, and that is exactly what this experience was.

I'd rather drive 99 Miles to Pats.

It may be 99 miles to Philly, but this place is zero miles from pure meat belly busting bliss.

I had a chicken wit whiz and onion, cheese waffle fries (thx for the tip yelpers!), and a can of soda for $11. Worth every single penny. Even after reading the reviews I was shocked at how good (and authentic) everything was.

I will be going back to have a proper cheesesteak, but the chicken version is hands down best I've had in NYC, and could certainly be mistaken for a "true" Philly chicken cheesesteak. This place is not messin' around!

Pat's in Philly is still King, but 99 Miles is Queen. Or Duke, or... you get the idea. It's real good!

P.S. Until I have a proper cheesesteak I'm keeping my review at 4 stars, just to be safe. :)

For all those complaining, especially the guy that "never had a cheesesteak before" - why the hell do you have the right to give a review then?  Also, the girl Virginia that complained about the delivery guy.  Yes, he shouldn't have to wait 5 minutes for you.. and no $3 isn't a big tip.  If $10 is too much money for anyone in NYC, move somewhere else..  EVERYTHING is expensive here.  Stop being cheap or cook your own food at home.

On to my review of 99 Miles - yes, cheesesteaks are greasy and amazing.  If you don't like cheese whiz, don't bother eating a 'philly cheesesteak'.  It's not Philly if it's not whiz, sorry.  Also, NO they don't put bacon on their cheesesteaks.  Whoever wrote that is an idiot.

I crave Pats all the time and it is a must have when I go to Philly, which is not very often.  It's hard to find something so authentic and I pass by this place all the time and for some reason never went in.

Well last night I changed all that and went nuts.  I got a Cheese steak Wit Wiz and extra American.  It was hot and cheesy and just what I like about those Philly Cheese steaks.

This is the perfect substitute and I will be back for more!

Side note, they only accept cash and conveniently have an ATM next to the register.

I had the cheese steak and waffle fries to go as take out. The delivery guy had a terrible attitude. He was nagging and complaining on the phone and I told him I was going to be down there in 5 minutes. He started bitching and said " Look lady, my time is precious. I can't wait that long. " So I told him I'm going down now and he shut up. Then when I got down there, my order was $11.25 but I only had a 20. So I asked him for change, he gave me 8 bucks but I owed him 75cents, I only had 50cents on me and he threw a fit again. " Lady, I work hard for my money I don't know I would like to have my change. " So I got tired of his bitch fits and just threw him the 3 bucks as his change and tip and told him to get the hell out of my face. Then he goes " Oh no, no this is too much tip." And I said no, just take it. get out of here. " Yeah, don't act all fucking modest on me.

Lesson learned: Tip makes delivery guys vomit sunshine in your face.

Now for the food, the philly cheese steak was gooey and greasy and too filling. The waffle fries were " eh. " I could get better ones for cheaper, a lottt cheaper.

I don't know why everyone who has eaten a pat's steak sandwich thinks there is something unbelievebly special about them.  I'm a person who visits Philly quite often and to me the real thing is the whiz.  If you can get whiz on it I'm good with it and it's authentic.

Is it greasy?

yes, it's a fucking  cheese steak.

Are the fries good?

Yes.

Is 11 bucks too much for a sandwich, fries and a soda?

yes.

That being said don't complain about the delivery guy when you're writing a review on a restaurant. You haven't even stepped in the god damn place.

I think it is what it is and it's pretty good

For better or worse, this is the most authentic cheese steak you could possibly get in New York City. While the casual observer may think a Philly cheese steak is made with "actual" cheese, the authentic kind are made with boiling hot Cheese Whiz and are more of a fast food item than they are a sandwich. The sandwich is an incredibly simple dish that can be closely recreated with little effort at home but its probably worth trying one here first, just to see how it should be done.

I've passed by this place looking for Toy Tokyo and after hearing great things about it on Bryan Brinkman's Twitter, I checked it out on a whim. For $11, they give you a 12 inch Cheese Steak, a side of waffle fries and a can of Coke, this combo left me pretty much full for the rest of the day and you'll be tanked from grease overload for at least an hour or two. I'd be willing to guess it has somewhere around 1200 calories, probably more than that given how I felt after eating it but it was absolutely delicious nonetheless.

The actual interior of the place is fairly crowded and small, I went around 2 in the afternoon and I had to wait a fair amount of time to actually find a seat. They have a few posters and an HDTV in there to spice up a fairly generic room. There are a few stools too and a lowly ceiling fan, but I couldn't help but feel a little cramped in there. I wouldn't recommend going here towards the more crowded lunch hours or on a hot summer day, it was a bit sweaty on my experience.

Whether or not you'd like this food really depends on how much you crave an authentic Philly cheese steak. People who haven't been to Philly though, may not understand what exactly the fuss is all about.

I'm not from Philadelphia, but I have been there and I have had a Pat's cheesesteak.  And, yes, Pat's is as good as everyone says.

Alot of diners and restaurants have Philly Cheesesteaks on the menu, and alot of people that have ordered said steaks usually get sick.  Cheesesteaks, as far as I'm concerned, are a specialty food.

99 miles to Philly certainly delivers a pretty good cheesesteak.  They know what they are doing.
I've been here twice now, the first time it was good, but I ordered extra cheese based on someone else's review and it was WAY too salty for me.
The second time was great when I ordered it just as is, with some cheese wiz and onions.
Also open late! Great for the drunchies. (Drunk munchies).

I love Philly Cheese Steaks but I can never make it to Philly when I am craving one. So my husband heard good things about 99 miles and decided that his cheesesteak connoisseur wife (his words not mine) had to try it out.

It was awesome!!!! and it's literally 99 miles from Philly which makes it even more fun.

I have gotten take out twice from here, never sat there to eat.

If you have it Pat's original 1930's way get it with provolone, or you can do what's most popular today and get it with Cheese Whiz.

I get mine with cheese whiz and onions, and steak not chicken or vegetables even though they offer them!!

99 miles has replaced my longtime fav Carl's Steaks as the best cheesesteak in Manhattan!!!!

It's a hole in a wall that has made a home in my heart well actually my stomach and I am looking forward to the next visit!!

Service is quick and straight forward

PS -- It's greasy - get lots of napkins and ask for a plastic bag if they just hand it to you to go in a brown bag, or you will end up with a grease stain on your lap which well just doesn't look right.

I was in the mood for some delivery the other night, and yes, 99 Miles to Philly is within 100 yards of my apt, but I was just in a lazy/slobbish mood and didn't want to go for take out. I've frequented this place a number of times in the past, and when I'm hankerin' for some good ol' fashion meat and grease, they never let me down. And believe me, these cheese steaks are greasy; all nicely wrapped up in some tinfoil, they need a few minutes to "breathe" before feasting. The bread is nice and soft (less soggy after the air dry), while the hot sauce is the best (I suspect they use either Frank's or Red Devil).

I'm no connoisseur of Philly cheese steaks, but this place always does the trick when the mood strikes.

My cousin and I went into the city just because the weather was pleasant.  We start to walk around and he says, "I'm hungry."
Me: "What do you want to eat?"
Him: "A cheesesteak."
Me: "Duh. Then we're in the wrong damn city.  We should've just driven to Philly."
Him: "Uhm. I still want a cheesesteak."
Not wanting to settle for a diner or any other type of fare, we start to roam the streets of NYC with no real destination in mind.  After about 30 minutes of playing possum with the traffic and re-enacting a human version of the classic games of "Snake" and "Frogger", we look up and see the awning of 99MTP.  It was as if the Lord, himself, said, "My children, you have suffered enough.  Your prayers have been answered."
Ok. Maybe not.  But it was pretty damn cool.
Neither of us has been to, Philly so we can't compare, but those cheesesteaks tasted kick ass to us.

Are you selling me a sandwich or 3 pounds of grease and an assortment of other stuff on bread?

I didn't care...It's absolutely amazing wit or witout.  The waffle fries are pretty bomb too.  The fact they also have Frank's Red Hot available already lets me know...this is where i should spend my next 8 to 10 dollars.

If you're looking for a heart attack worthy meal...

I ordered a beef cheese steak with cheese whiz and mushrooms, and a side of waffle fries. It's authentically greasy and juicy. The bread was on the softer/soggier side and didn't distract from the meat. I ordered from Seamlessweb and it took about 40 min door-to-door.

Met up with an out-of-town buddy here recently. I picked this place because it opens late, it is casual and would be perfect for a 'snacking' type of meal. Initially, buddy said he had already eaten while I wasn't feeling very hungry. Thus we each ordered Steak Whiz Wit, started with half a sandwich first and before you know it, ended up gobbling up the other half and finished both sandwiches. It was one. good. cheese. steak. sandwich. Really!

Cheap chow at its best.
So much for not feeling very hungry. :P

Best cheesesteak I have had in New York City. Great bread, juicy steak, cheese whiz, hot sauce and onions.

They even have the proper Philly lingo down    "Wit" or "witout".  Fries are delicious and other options more body-friendly are available but haven't tried.

Very cheap. Very good.

Despite considering myself a New Yorker, I would say I'm a cheesesteak connoisseur of sorts. I've done Pat's, as well as Gino's. I've driven 2 hours to Philly on a whim because I had a craving, but a couple of years ago, having been a Carl's fan, a friend from Philly turned me on to 99 Miles.

I almost saw it as an honor when this weekend I introduced another friend (from Philly- or the greater PA area) to the magical $10.99 cheesesteak, waffle fries and soda (clearly Dr. P is the way to go) and it was met with approval.

It's literally a little hole in the wall that somehow manages to always have seating (seriously, is this place ever packed?), the price is right and the steaks are crazy delicious- what's not to love?

I made a random pit stop here on a rainy night and was enticed inside the restaurant by the cool red truck logo.  I ordered the classic cheese whiz wit' onions and sauntered off happily with my prize.  Unbeknownst to me, the philly cheesesteak sauce started leaking through the paper bag and onto my jacket leaving a hideous oily stain.  Spray 'N Wash where art thou magic?  The sizable and ridiculously cheap sandwhich was solid though nothing beats the real deal in Philly.  I intend to go back though this time I'll insist on a plastic bag and a bib.

Luv it!

My fav cheesesteak place in the city- been going here for over a year now with no complaints.

I've tried most of the combinations and always go for the american cheese, although the whiz is great too. Waffle fries are huge and well-seasoned.

"Rocky" posters and other Philly prints adorn the walls. One flat screen makes the 5 minutes it takes to make your cheesesteak fly by in a breeze!

Stay away from the delivery service here- takes them around 45+ minutes (based on my two experiences)

Hi my name is Stephanie, and I'm a cheesesteak-a-holic.  I am constantly on a quest to find a good cheesesteak, and this my friends, is the best one I've found in NYC.

I have an average order history of 10 days from this place.  I crave this thing like you wouldn't believe.

I get a cheesesteak w/provolone, mushrooms and onions, plus the french fries (waffle fries) and onion rings (diner style) which are equally incredible.

delivery is usually quick and they are on seamless web, my other addiction.

much better than Wogies in my opinion.

Yelp should only allow 1 Star or 4 Star ratings for a Philly Cheesesteak shack.  There's no nuance here, people.  It either does what it's meant to do, or it doesn't.

And no, fatty, there's no such thing as a 5 Star Philly Cheesesteak.

99 Miles to Philly did what it's meant to do: it served me 2,000 calories in the form of meat, a roll, and provolone cheese.  There were onions.  Four stars.

Had the bread been soggy, or the meat been insufficient, or the onions been wood chips, then it would have gotten 1 star.  Simple.

Apparently this place is literally 99 miles from philly (so bonus points on the clever name) but, certainly the food lives up to the hype some friends have made.  Greasy philly cheesesteak w/ cheese whiz and onions made me feel like I was having cheesesteak from pat's or gino's ...okay maybe NOT AS GOOD.  BUT for it being right in the middle of East Village, it is REALLY good.  Sandwich, Waffle Fries, & can of Soda for $10.99 (Includes tax) not bad.

What is this long time I keep hearing? I have not waited for more than ten minutes every time I'm there.

Though I lack in cheesesteak experience for I've never had a REAL cheesesteak, but the cheesesteak + waffle fries combo is delich!

And according to the Fresh Prince of Bel Air, REAL philly cheesesteak is supposed to be so greasy, you can almost see it through the paper bag!
So until I visit Philly for the authentic one, 99 miles is good enough for me!

I passed by here, I'm a cheesesteak guy but when I came in and pick out whatever in mind... put in my mouth.. my mind just went nuts. This is the most tasty, yet greasy, yet filling cheese-steak I ate. Period. Waiting its fine a good 5 mins. They give you a card and each time you go they will stamp your visit, the 10th visit gets you free sandwitch. And that's fine.

Great to go as a group, if you are going alone... that's cool too.

A bit pricey but well worth that bang of a buck

Oh, yes, it's getting another star. I've been here several times now, and yesterday, I finally got the waffle fries. Oh. My. God. Not only are they waffle-shaped, but they also are actually crispy and deliciously seasoned. Yum. I'd also like to address other Yelpers' contention that there isn't enough meat on the sandwiches here. Well, they do use smaller rolls than what I normally associate a cheesesteak with, but there is enough meat crammed into it that it normally takes me an hour to finish the sandwich. It's a LOT of food.

And the staff? They're entirely too nice. Remember to ask them for a Frequent Buyer card, because I assure you, you will be coming back here.

Great philly cheesesteaks, lots of options in terms of toppings, cheese,  sauce, etc.  Be sure to get the combo with the waffle fries which are awesome!.

I recommend ordering from here and not eating here as the place is pretty small, kind of a hole in the wall.  I have friends from Philly that say these are the closest they have found to the real deal.  Hit it up!

First of all, let me say, I've never been to Philly. I've never had a "real" cheesesteak. I don't know if they are supposed to have provolone or cheez whiz or what.
What I do know is that 99 Miles to Philly produces a damn delicious sandwich.

Craving a cheesesteak whilst about and about, I finally gave this place a try. $10.99 bought me a sandwich, waffle fries and a soda. The cheesesteak was 7 inches of shaved steak and cheez whiz with mushrooms and hot peppers, served on a soft hoagie roll. It was juicy without being too greasy and extremely tasty and filling. Even the fries were awesome, and waffle fries are usually one of those things that are the same everywhere. I was in heaven. The spicy ketchup on the tables was a surprising bonus... just the right touch of tangy heat.

Good thing I work just around the corner, because this is my new favorite place. Sooooo good.

I don't think I did my first cheesesteak experience right. I always thought I'd be in Philly for it. After a long run up the Rocky stairs. Listening to Bruce Springsteen and taking in the views.

Instead, I'm sitting across from CK watching the grease trickle down my tray and hoping that my heart doesn't give out from the ooey gooey cheeze wiz and the meat cooked on a grill.

Don't get me wrong. This place is great. Small seating spots with approximately 10 tables. Friendly staff and an easy menu. Kind of wish you could have beers here, but there are plenty of bars around the corner to help you out with that.

I liked the cheap and quick access to deliciously junkie food that this place prides itself on. I was at the bar next door and needing some grub to hold off from getting too sauced too early. So at my friends recommendation, I got the Cheese Steak with peppers and provolone and promised my friend a bite. Well, by the time I got back, 2 doors down, I had scarfed about half of the sandwich down. It was so good and so gooey and warm that I didn't want to wait until I sat down to eat it. I didn't even care that I am lactose intolerant.

When I got back to our table, I maybe had 3 big bites left. By the time he noticed, I had that last big bite filling my mouth, with an innocent look on my face to say "Sorry. Also, get your own." But all he heard was, "Ommmm, memmm mourmm ommmmm." AKA, the sounds of pure deliciousness.

Having only been to Philly once, 99 Miles is my best bet when i'm craving a Philly Cheese steak.    I always order the steak with onions and whiz, and haven't been dissapointed yet.   The steak is a bit on the greasy side, but honestly, isn't that what your expecting when ordering a Philly Cheese steak with onions and cheese whiz.    I have ordered delivery and sat down.   Seating is extremely limited, so be prepared to stand.

Unlike other reviewers, I found my sandwich with steak and provolone to be very greasy and not very juicy. I opted for the deal which includes sandwich, waffle fries, and a can of soda, and the amount of food was way too much to consume. I would recommend two people sharing an order of fries.

I did find the location to be very convenient, especially before a concert at Webster Hall, and I loved sitting near the window and watching passerbys. Overall, nothing terribly special.

not impressed.
This is my first time having a cheesesteak and it was pretty much not my speed.  my girlfriend had a blast watching me eat it and become increasingly confused.  maybe it was this cheesesteak which sucked, maybe it's all cheesesteaks, i dont know.  the place was small, and it just wasnt my thing.  i'm never returning thats for sure

ok, i'm being harsh. have all of these reviewers eaten at pat's, geno's or jim's in philly, or even the ones by upenn? how come cheesteaks in philly are all kinda skinny?

i dunno, i just thought 99miles was ok. nothing special. its a thin roll, not much steak, a little TOO greasy, and i like my grease. i'm glad they sell cheese steaks, but its not like the ones in philly, trust me. 1 cheesesteak whiz wit with mushrooms and a can of soda = $9.50

I've walked past this place a few times but thought it looked a little too kitschy to be good. I looked up the Yelp reviews and decided to give it a try after seeing a good amount of 5 star reviews.

After eating at 99 Miles to Philly, I can't think of one good reason not to give it 5 stars. The place was cozy, the prices were reasonable, ordering was laid back, and the sandwiches themselves were really tasty. I think this place really has the formula down for my ideal cheese steak experience.

Plus, all I ate for the day was 5/6s of my steak & wiz and I'm just starting to get full at 11:20 the next morning. I couldn't have fit a beer in me if I tried.

99 miles sounds so close to Philly before eating here, but Philly seems very far away after finishing (edit: half-finishing). Amoroso roll, check.  But the meat is greasy and gristly.  Pat's (http://www.yelp.com/bi...) can be greasy, but tastes great -- on the other hand, the 99 Miles steak soaks the bun with cheap meat drippings faster than you can say steak-ums.  All of this + overcooked fries (waffle fries? not really the east coast fling) + lukewarm soda = fail. I'd say I wish I had tried this place drunk, but something tells me it would have made no difference.  Doom doom doom da da, doom doom doom da da - Da di da di da da, da da, daa daa daa.

i wish i was hungrier because i would have enjoyed the "steak whiz wit" even more!

great sandwich....sloppy as hell...but a great experience!

the cheesesteak was tasty, and although it's a meaty, cheesy, oniony mess...the meat is nicely chopped up and not overwhelming (like if you were eating a big burger).  it's the perfect combination of meat, veggies, cheese, and bread.

i had a splash of their hot sauce to top it off because i like a little heat with my meat (hmmm that didn't sound right).

if you're ever on the lower east side (LES as I was told) check them out!

as they say in the Jack in the Box commercial....

"Yo Jack, I soaked up philly like a sponggge!" (imagine the mullet, denim, and 80's garb)
