Neighborhood: Brooklyn/Red HookDollar stores are dollar stores, but this one is a real gem. Upon our maiden voyage, Ben C. and I were awed by the dazzling selection of Christmas decorations:
"Aw man . . . we are gonna deck the ---- halls!"
The tagline under the sign is , "Where everything is $.99 or more." This, of course, is true, but not much more! You may want to pass up the $.99 tampons, but slotted spoons, dish towels, mouse traps and clothespins are all perfectly fine here. You can also find a charming selection of old-fashioned greeting cards (in Spanish, of course) and neat things like black tiles ($7.99) for a cheap kitchen changeup.
There's a small grocery section, frozen and packaged, with $.99 towers of Stella D'Oros and Pringles, if that's your thing. Necessities like batteries and pregnancy tests are located behind the desk.
Cash only.
