Damn good pizza for a dollar.

I always come here when I'm in the Time Square/Port Authority area because, hell, you can't beat a decent pizza for a buck a slice. There's no inside area, nowhere to sit, and (sometimes) there can be a line, but... IT'S A DOLLAR.

I've been to a few dollar pizza places around the city and, honestly, no one does it as quickly and as well as they do here. Slices are decently sized (two will fill you up), they're quick to order, and people give you space when you need to stand and eat. The pizza itself is not too oily, the crust is thin and it's pretty much what you would expect from a "New York" style pizza.

They have two specials: a drink and two slices for a dollar (which is what I normally get) and a pizza pie for eight bucks. Keep in mind that you're not actually saving money with the pie as their typical pie come with eight slices (ego, eight dollars). But who's complaining when the slices are A DOLLAR.

If you're in the area and you have some time to kill and could use a little food in your stomach, definitely drop by here.

Well, it's not Di Fara good but it's not Chef Boy-Ar-Dee pizza kit awful either and what do you really expect for 99¢? I think if I were walking down the street hungry, I'd much rather have a slice of this for less than a buck than a Gray's Papaya dog for a buck ninety-five!

The slices are usually very fresh, like right-from-the-oven fresh due to the price-based high turnover rate and the multitudes of broke-ass low-lifes that abundantly proliferate the area who are mainly responsible for the aforementioned turnover.

The crust is either very light and airy like Singa's, or just plain undercooked due to the pizza guy's impatience to get as much product out of the oven to sell to the clamoring hoards as he can. I'm still trying to decide on that one. The sauce and cheese is unremarkable and applied extremely sparingly.

The countermen lack any type of asset even slightly resembling charm, but still, they are way more personable than their counterparts up at Koronet. Plus, you're here for cheap pizza not to make a new friend.

So, if you ever find yourself near the slimiest section of the Port Authority area and are in need of a quick, cheap and relatively tasty wad of something to fill that void in your gut, 99¢ Fresh Pizza will surely not disappoint. Still, this is just a one-star joint, though.

Your expectations have to be in check when you pay 99 cents for a slice of pizza.  And guess what, for a 99 cent piece of pizza it delivers.   Is it great?  Hell no.  Is it bad?  Hell no.  Does it fill you up on the cheap?  Hell yes.

My only problem here is that the ordering and line can be a bit frustrating.  Too many people standing around, getting in the way, and otherwise making life more difficult than it need be.

1.50 for a one topping slice. Good and hot pizza in the area. Counter only, so order, toss on some peppers and move aside. Price is the only exceptional thing about it.

Stopped by for a slice and watched the traffic cop get into a shouting match with an idiot in an SUV.

Probably creeped out a guy by trying to wait in line when it turned out there was no line, everybody was just standing around in various stages of the eating process and I just stood really close behind one of them.  Moral of the story: Elbow your way to a window, try to force eye-contact with a worker and yell your order.

Got a coffee and a donut for $1.  Nothing worth $1 has so rocked my socks off.  It tasted like a $2 coffee and a $1 donut.  What a deal!

    Yo. This is a dollar.

    A DOLLAR.

You can't get anything in manhattan for a dollar. But you can get this. For three, you can stuff yourself. For four you can stuff yourself and sate your thirst.

Pizza is pretty damn good. I've had much worse for much more, and never as good for less. Nice balance of cheese to sauce to bread, not exemplary, but it tastes all the sweeter when accompanied by the sound of money you didn't spend shaking around in your pocket.

Couple of hookers, couple of junkies at any given time. It's a little local flavor.

    I love this effin' place.

As a past resident of Hell's Kitchen, I do miss this place the most.  I must rate it at 3 stars, because of the volatile range of quality you can receive from slice to slice.  Let me break it down:

5 stars - It's late at night and you are drunk/high/basically anything to fail a standard test.  This pizza will be a godsend.  At 99 cents per slice, and you can put all the hot sauce, cheese, garlic, or oregano you desire, what more do you want?

4 stars - It's late at night and you are merely buzzed.  You have the hankering for something to eat.  At 99 cents per slice, it'll satisfy your cravings, and it's not half bad.  Easy to fold and eat, and 2 slices is just enough to hit the spot.

3 stars - It's late in the evening, sober as a priest, and you just need to eat something to full fill your daily caloric intake.  Hey, it's close by.  At 99 cents per slice, it will do the job.  Yeah it's not bad, but it's no 5 star.

2 stars - It's anytime during the day, and you're mental state can be anything.  You have them deliver a pie to your place...Yeah it's not good.  I don't know why the pizza tastes so different at home than when you're out on the street corner.  However, the heightened level of intoxicity in your blood MAY bump the rating up...I mean, why wouldn't it.

1 star - It's real late at night, you're really drunk/high, it's snowing and 20 degrees outside, all you want is the damn pizza and put hot sauce on it..."Oh we ran out and we're currently making some."  GIVE ME MY PIZZA!

So basically; great drunk food and don't get it delivered.  Don't bother asking for the change because I am willing to bet they carry absolutely no pennies.

My apt is on the same block as this place, and finally had to try it after passing it a few times. It's a strange location, on the corner of 41st and 9th, which is right next to the Port Authority Terminal (not the cleanest area). The pizza was no-muss no-fuss, and we probably had our slices within 45 seconds of ordering.

If you just want a quick bite to eat while walking down the street, surely check it out. I noticed they also had whole pizzas for $8, but I'd probably chow down and purge it out.

Not "the best" or "most authentic" NYC pizza, but hey - for 99 cents, you get what you pay for - and it's absolutely edible (and open late!)...

Thank the pizza heavens for this place. 99 cents is better cheaper for a slice than almost anywhere and you get a quality slice for what little money you're putting down.

It's always a little on the dough-y side which is fine by me.

When I'm stuck in mid town and hating myself for it, its nice to know there's a cheap, consistently good place to get some grub.

The pizza wasn't terrible. If you're low on cash, time, or caring for your taste buds, this works!
It was better than I thought it'd be, but don't get your hopes up. Seriously. There are plenty of great pizza places in this city, so this is the place you go to for the deal. A dollar? That's awesome. And I appreciate that.
Personally, though, pizza is a religion for me and I'd rather fork over the extra dollar fifty for a quality slice.
It's doughyer than I'd like too, but hey.. it is a dollar.
Bottom line: Go here for the deal, and nothing more. It's fast, and useful in a pinch.

This pizza is like crack! Seriously, I used to live down the block from this place and I would crave it ALL of the time! The only thing that stopped me from getting this everyday was that I didn't want to be judged by the guy who works there...

For 99 cents, this pizza is pretty amazing but the secret is adding on the hot sauce. Also, for an extra 50 cents (maybe it's a tad more), you can add on toppings like pepperoni, mushrooms, etc.

Just do yourself a favor and buy a slice of this pizza.... but please don't forget the hot sauce!!

I first came to this place while working as a bike messenger. I was tired, hungry and desperate. I was riding down 9th ave and saw their "99¢ pizza" sign, I promptly turned around to see what was up.

There was a gaggle of people crowded around the window, some eating their slice others waiting to pay. I watched to see the procedure because I realized this place was all business and I did not want to be the newbie holding up the line. Its pretty simple, give the man a dollar and a slice of pizza will appear right in front of you.

Now, I realize I am what you would consider a pizza connoisseur so why would I give this place 4 stars? Its simple, their pizza really is fresh. Given its proximity to the Port Authority Bus Terminal their pizza turn over is quite high. Additionally, their pizza's crust is crispy, the slices are large, its not overly cheesy/ greasy/saucy, and the best part? Its only a dollar...well, actually 99¢.

5 stars because it's good. but no, in case all you knights of the round table are wondering, it's not the fabuloso holy grail of pizza.

5 stars because it doesn't need to be.

I've eaten here over the years more times than I'd actually like to admit (even to myself) -- when I lived on West End Avenue I'd stop by here in a taxi on my ride home from bars (they used to offer after 11pm an entire pizza for $5!), when I visit my friends who live in the area (one only a block away, one a couple blocks away, one a few blocks away) I've foolishly stumbled across this place again and again.

Honestly the pizza has never been good and still isn't. It's sort of like cardboard, there's no real marinara of which to speak, and the cheese is minimal -- but for only a buck it's filling... put some chili flakes on it and if you're drunk enough you'll hopefully forget about it soon enough.

But it's the crowd/environment that I find so absolutely unappealing... There are always lots of homeless people hanging out around -- and sometimes they'll just push their way to the front of the line and slowly dig through their pockets for change to pay... A couple times I've purchased slices of pizza for these people because it felt I had to or else. I'm not one to be intimidated, but sometimes you've gotta do what you've gotta do -- better safe than sorry... And, honestly, I'd rather just stay altogether -- especially since there is now an equally cheap joint with superior product and service just a block down 9th avenue where you can actually sit down and enjoy yourself.

I noticed the sign, maybe what feels like a million times. Never thought to walk over to 9th Ave for pizza though.

That all changed when I read David's review of 2 Bros Pizza just up the street. With his glowing rec of a $1 slice of pizza, I just had to try it out, so I bookmarked it. Luckily, I was coming to Kevin F's roof deck party the next day.

I tried 2 Bros before alcohol, and this place after alcohol. Even with alcohol on board, this pizza still wasn't anywhere as good as 2 Bros.

Did I write 2 Bros Pizza enough times in this review?

Bottom line, if you need pizza that bad, walk 2 blocks to 2 Bros Pizza and pay the extra penny for a passable slice of pizza.

If this place cost a penny more, I'd be forced to take it down to 1 star, but I left it there for those times when a penny, or more likely the couple blocks could make a difference, especially late at night after 2 Bros Pizza closes.

To that dude asking for change in front of the 99c Fresh Pizza:

    Are you serious?!

You're asking for change from people so cheap that they're intentionally going to a place selling $1 slices of pizza?!

People so cheap that buying cheese pizza for a $1 is worth getting harassed by vagrants and shady characters at all hours of the day/night?!

People so cheap that a cone-shaped piece of crust with a tiny dabbling of cheese and marinara can be deemed good pizza?!

Seriously, your strategy doesn't really make sense to me (no pun intended).

    Good luck with that, dude.

    ------------------------------
Note: Admittedly, I am one of those cheap bastards, and I do like my $1 pizza. Highly recommended.

I think the 42nd and 9th Ave block could easily be the cheapest way to eat through NYC. Cheesesteaks, hot dogs and pizza all less than $5. Our eyes were bigger than our stomachs that night. Everything just looked good. Then again, it was 2 AM and everyone was drunk.

99 Cents Fresh Pizza was like a peak of sunshine during  a cloudy winter's day. It made everyone happy and the service was so welcoming. I got a cheese slice and soda for two bucks. This pizza parlor is more of a pizza stand. It's actually a pizza window and we ate on the sidewalk. The pizza wasn't greasy because it had minimal cheese on it and just a thin coat of sauce. It was better than Little Caesars and just as big as a regular NY slice. Back in the day I heard you could get a whole pie here for five bucks only. 99 Cents Fresh Pizza aka "Sobering Slice" is such a great deal and it's not even a recession special. Its been like that forever and will continue to be year round.

It's not fucking gourmet, it's not made with top shelf ingredients, it's not super fancy, it's not even all that good to be honest.

99 cents for better than average pizza.

I've had this pizza so many times during my many visits to Manhattan and I will continue to go back during my future visits. Cheap, fast and totally worth it.

When it comes to 99 cent pizza, this is definitely as good as it gets!

If there's ANYTHING wrong, it's the shady location. Mostly a little uncomfortable at night but you know what, who cares. You just pick up the pizza and go if it bothers you. Hell's Kitchen has cleaned itself up a lot over the years anyway.

Don't hesitate. Just go. Do it. Now!

Right around the corner from my new pad, I blindly stumbled onto this place. But once my friends heard I was moving to 42nd and 9th, they said, "Oh near the $1 pizza place." So I guess this place is famous (notorious, maybe?).

It's a dollar. You wait in line, and depending on the season and the time, you're gonna end up with a slice of dollar pizza. It tastes like $1 pizza, but it hasn't killed me yet. How's it a dollar? Subpar ingredients, not-great tasting cheese that's spread too thin. *shrug* You know how that old adage goes...

Gonna try Kristina I.'s suggestion some day and try out 2Bros right down the street.

Wow, I'm all for variety and trying new pizza, but I have yet to find a pizza that provides more bang for the buck than 99 Cents Fresh Pizza.  Great quick service and even though there are always people hovering around for a slice, you never have to wait long.  They are always turning over their pizza too which means.. it's well, Fresh!  That means a lot because so many other pizza joints I believe are suffering from the left out all day issue.  That will never be an issue here with such huge turnover, you are guaranteed a fresh slice day or late, late night.

It's 99 cent pizza. It tastes like generic pizza, because it is. If you're expecting coal-oven, crispy perfection and goodness, you're out of your damn mind. This place gets four stars because it exemplifies perfection within its genre, which is the 99-cent-pizza genre.

For 99 cents, it ain't bad. And further, I'll wager that it's better than any pizza you'd get outside the New York City metro area.

If you want to make a little trip out of it, grab your pizza and walk toward Lex. There's a nice little outdoor sitting area to the right. Not only do you get pizza value, you get al fresco dining. What the hell else do you want?!?

But hey it's a $1.07(it used to be 99 cents). There is no such thing as fancy slices with lobster or sausages on it,no high quality products.Just the basic,a cheese slice.

For less than three dollars you get two slices and a can soda. You cannot beat that price anywhere else.If you happen to be clubbing after 3am,you're starving and you want to eat now, pass by,grab your slice and walk off.

Ah, the memories...they come gushing back.

During my first year in New York, I tried very hard to relive college.  I used to go wild on 80s night at Joshua Tree amidst a sea of massive TV screens playing crazy ass videos; go to Rudy's for the $6 pitchers of PBR and free popcorn; think Heartland Brewery was the coolest pub in town; go to my buddy's apartment in what was called "the banker building" on 42nd and 9th to smoke a doobie by the window and philophisize about life and how "complicated" it is in the big city, and then invariably stop by 99 cent pizza on my way home.  Thank you for feeding me during my "highest" moments, 99 cent pizza.  You were truly cheap, and frankly it didn't matter if you were delicious! (For the record, you weren't)

Thankfully, my life has progressed well over the last 3 years, and so have my pizza joints.

Just because it's cheap doesn't mean it's good.  Just because it is in NY, doesn't make this "real New York City pizza".  But for 99 cents, you can't be picky...

Not bad if you're looking for cheap pizza. They certainly skimp on the toppings (even the cheese), so expect a pretty bare pizza. But for 99 cents, it's certainly not a bad deal at all and tastes somewhat decent too.

If you're looking for dirt cheap, quick bite, give it a shot.

Cheaper than Mcd's. A slice of pizza for a $1? Yes please. Didn't expect very much and it turned out to be really good. We got the 2 slices and a soda special for $2 and change, loaded it with hot peppers, and folded that thing up. We were on a rampage buying food from any place that was open on Saturday/ Sunday during Irene. Glad to have checked this place out.

At 99 Cents Fresh Pizza (The stand offers several standard toppings for a small additional fee.), you definitely get what you pay for: The slices may come super cheap, but they're also bland and uninspiring. However, if a) you're chilling around Port Authority, b) only have a dollar to your name and c) desire food that leaves your taste buds unsatisfied, then, by all means...

Note: Unless you don't tend to get nervous when surrounded by large, shady characters as you eat your order on the street, I would suggest patronizing this place during the daylight hours.

stop going here! one block down and on the other side is much better 1dollar pizza (WITHOUT TAX) MUCH BETTER.
Believe me and not AS skeevy.

If you try 2Bros, I bet you'll denounce this place. You can tell the slices are made with better ingredients. I thought 99 cents was good until 2bros came along!.

I swung by for a scooby snack today. They are now taxing the slices!

Did I say 99 cents? I can't even buy a candy bar much less a nice, cheesy slice of pizza.

Go here, find this place. Its worth it!

This place is alright considering the price you're paying. How can you say no to $0.99 a slice?! The bar wasn't set too high at all so they easily satisfied my hunger for some NY pie. It's located behind the port authority right below the Lincoln Tunnel. Conveniently located if you ask me. The guys behind the counter do a bang up job in taking orders and filling them. We ordered a large cheese pie for $8.00 and we probably waited all about 5 minutes (and I'm exaggerating here).

This place isn't even in the same realm of the other NY pizza staples but it doesn't look like they're hurting for business with the constant foot traffic they bring in. Finding a pizza joint in the city is like finding a Starbucks in California. They're a dime a dozen and you always have to bring something unique to the table to come out on top. 99 Cents Fresh Pizza may not be the best but is probably is the cheapest.
