Soft rock at it's best.
esp when they get into an 80s groove.
yeah baby!!!
i was washing my car on a sunny day and it seemed like all the other stations had commercials or some annoying voice talking about how annoyed he was, while my fav station made the sunny day straight out of the breakfast club and st elmos fire... -

I used to listen to 96.5 KOIT, a few times a day, but never more than 30 minutes. Because after that, it's gonna repeat.
My work place had it on their ceiling speakers, and I've just ran to the control room to find the OFF button.
The music is good, no doubt. But you know.. the feeling when you're too full of something... you have a headache and you wanna puke...
America has countless great songs. You don't have to play 1% of the newest songs over and over. -
Review from Michael F.

They play great music. Why 2 stars though? THEY PLAY THE SAME SONGS OVER AND OVER AGAIN. Marc Anthony and Colbie Caillat, for example, are great artists, but I really don't want to hear "You Sang to Me" and "Bubbly", respectively, 5 times a day. Maybe if they played more music, more often, I would listen more often.
So they get one star because the music itself is nice, good music. They get another star because I actually like the Christmas music at Christmas time. It's nice and they don't play the same exact Christmas songs over and over again. -

"You're in the middle of a guaranteed 30 minute music set."
*Commercial*
Seriously wtf? Hahaha
EDIT: Originally I gave this 5 stars, but it's really sad when a station that's been airing X-mas music since Thanksgiving decides to abruptly stop at exactly 12:01 on December 26th. I mean come on.
But anyway, I've had problems finding a good Christmas music station the past two years. The stations I used to listen to either stuck to one short playlist or played enough commercials to make you think you're tuning into an infomercial channel. But KOIT has been good; solid selection of songs including ones you don't hear all the time and a modest amount of commercials. When I gave up on the Christmas station down here in San Diego I tried my luck with SF and it's delivered. Good stuff. -

Screeching nails on the chalkboard. Sorority girls squealing at peak levels. Baby crying in a restaurant. Getting 'holla'd" at from moving vehicles. Losing to USC. Drinking MGD. Stupid People. Cats. Shopping on the weekend. Needles. Rude bartenders. Smelly people. Drivers who don't signal. Any Cameron Diaz movie. Cameron Diaz. People who are late. Flaky people. Chauvinistic assholes.
All things I hate to an ultimate extreme.
None of those compare to the vicious loathing that I feel, the enveloping disdain that inhabits my whole being the day that KOIT 96.5 turns into the Christmas Music Station. All Christmas Music all the time.
If I have to hear that shit spewing out of every sound system in every retail store I will be DAMNED if I hear that shit on the radio, too.
My mother loves that shit.
Mother: Mija...it's Christmas music!!!
Me: And?
Mother: Geez mija, have some holiday spirit!
Me: IT'S NOVEMBER 19!!! IT'S NOT EVEN THANKSGIVING YET!!!
Mother: Don't be such a grouch...I like it and I'm going to have it on until Christmas.
Me: Don't expect me to come to dinner then.
Mother: Mija, why are you so angry.
Me: Christmas makes me angry.
Mother: What's your excuse for the rest of the year. Oooh I love this song!! I saw mommy kissing Santa Claus....
Me: That's disturbing for any child....honestly ma, turn it off please.
Mother: Be quiet. Have your self a merry little Christmas....
Me: MA!! That's the most depressing christmas song EVER!! Good lord woman....stop the insanity!!
Mother: How did I raise such a bitter person? Poor man who ends up marrying you.
Me: Ma, I'm not getting married.
Mother: Especially with THAT attitude. No man wants a woman who's a grouch and hates Christmas. -

I used to love this radio station, but since i moved to the US(1995),they play the same songs every single day,it's like there is no one working there, just the same taype programed to run 24 hours.
Camon, there is lots of great hits to be played without repeating, try some thing different every day, some thing like:
Moment of the the 80s
Memories of the 70s
San Francisco Love nights from 12am-6am
To 100 of the decade.
Be creative,
You Know when you go out to eat,no matter how much you love the food,if you keep eating there every day and night, soon you will get sick of it.
Now i've been listening to 103.7 the band, but it seems like they have the same problem. -

I have to give it to them. KOIT will never let you down when you need to kick start the Holiday Season.
I swear, each year the Holiday music gets started earlier and earlier.
I love Christmas, I really do, but I don't think you need to be starting a week before Thanksgiving.
Overall, 96.5 KOIT does a great job of getting folks into the mood of the holidays, but you guys are just starting too darn early this year!
________________
P.S. - Please get rid of the song "Christmas In San Francisco" with the stupid lyrics: "Let's take a peek in Chinatown, Eating lychee nuts and BBQ Pork"
TERRIBLE SONG -

"Liiiighhht Rooooock Lessss Talllllkkkk Nintety- six point fiiiiiiveeee K- O- I- T."
Sheeeiiit, that's my favorite song that they constantly play! Year round this station is just alright. It still is on one of my presets. In spite of them being just an OK station, once mid- November hits they are the best fucken station in the whole bay area! Why? Because they play Christmas Tunes 24/7! I LOVE IT! Nothing gets me more in the holiday spirit!
I had to subtract a star because year round at times they can be a bit too light rock less talk if you knowhatimsayin? Supposedly they're less talk-- but to me they talk just as much as the next station. Maybe they're just less annoying during office hours for all their listeners.
Minus one more star because they don't play enough Mele Kalikimaka, Please Come Home for Christmas, Baby It's Cold Outside, and Last Christmas-- My favorite Christmas songs! Now, if they played that all day every day during the holiday season- 5 stars!
But they don't.. yet I'm still an avid listener! -

Haven't you noticed?
The same tape on loop for years
Ninety Six point Five
_____
I have been listening to this radio station for better or worse since before my mommy pushed me out of the womb. Apparently I also watched Star Trek in-foeto, but that's another story...
KOIT has never upgraded their lineup for music. They've been playing the same crap since time immemorial. Yes, I said it, they were playing 80s "Lite Rock" since the 70s. If you could put a radio station through cryogenics, you'd get KOIT 96.5, which, now that I've put it that way, actually sounds kind of cool--certainly much cooler than the real KOIT.
The worst is from the day after Thanksgiving until New Years Eve when all the workers (if they have any to begin with) go on vacation and they leave the same "holiday hits" tape with 8 songs and 5 commercials on it looping for two months. -
Review from Neil R.
Thanks 96.5FM for not playing Lady Gaga... and other crappy genre music.
Its nice to drive home from work at night and listen to sweet, soft, romantic music that you can actually understand the words to.
One small complaint: You guys make me miss my gf just a wee bit. Then again, I don't mind.
Again, thanks 96.5!!!1 Previous Review: Show all »

This review is for one thing, and one thing only:
KOIT's late night programming. What did I get: "The Words Get in The Way " & "Easy" & "I'm all out of Love" & "Islands in the Stream." okay, I lied about that last one, but the others are true! I'm a slow jam junky looking for my late night fix on KOIT. Lite rock rulz. -

I listen to FM 96.5 KOIT on my ipod touch, on my computer and on the radio at home. There are times when I listen to this radio station while I'm driving. After all, it is more music with commercials minimized. I tune in to FM 96.5 KOIT to listen to their Christmas Music the Wednesday/Friday before Thanksgiving every November. I've been listening to KOIT Christmas Music for 9 years and it is awesome!

"Light rock, less talk" means what it says. There's plenty of Fleetwood Mac/Stevie Nicks,Celine Dion,REO Speedwagon,Michael Buble,Norah Jones,Sting.. the lighter the rock, the more likely it's on this station. This radio station has high camp value. In a sense,it's so bad,it's good.
Its easy-going nature is the reason why it's the "most popular radio at work." It's not divisive, say, like Lady GaGa or the latest rap star. The music is so soft it makes Taylor Swift sound like a rugged, outlaw country singer.
KOIT works as easy listening. It's definitely ambient. It works like anaesthesia. Sleepytime and okay. -

96.5 KOIT is one of my favorite radio stations in the bay area. They play awesome class rock and new music. I like listening to them when I don't have my ipod in my car!
ONE THING THAT BOTHERS ME THE MOST IS... After thanksgiving all they play is Christmas music. What about my Jewish and Arabic friends who listens to this radio station. Why do they have to be subjected to this crap? So I subtracted 2 stars!
I still heart 96.5 KOIT but not after thanksgiving and during the month of December. -

It woulda been five stars if they STOPPED PLAYING ROB THOMAS -

I am a KOIT fanatic! Most people who know me, know this. Where else can I get my fill of Lionel Richie, Chicago and Journey? I love "Love Songs After Dark" and know all of the jingles by heart. The only radio station that's better belongs to Puerto Rico, http://www.magic973.com. Yes, sometimes their "lite rock, less talk" sucks. For example, Celine Dion could disappear from the rotation and I would not mind, especially "My Heart Will Go on." Are you listening KOIT? Take it away already! There's plenty more, but just when you're ready to give up, you hear a gem like "Fallin' In Love" and it's all worth it. Baby, Baby fallin' in love, I'm fallin' in love again...
My 3 star review is due to the extended period that they play nothing but Christmas music. Maybe they could do it a few days leading up to the holiday, but over a month is just overkill. Also, the Yes on 8 ads played during last year's election were a major turn off. I don't care how much they paid you KOIT, it was an unacceptable message to be playing, in San Francisco of all places! I wanted to boycott and am ashamed to say that I didn't. I just couldn't tear myself away from all the guilty pleasures. -

The full-time secretary at my job streams KOIT even though we have access to XM Radio. W? T? F?
Bach accompanies me while typing away the accounting reports while she's digging on some unholy pairing of No Doubt and Phil Collins. It's obvious by her mismatch of brand whore labels and overall generic orange-haired Stonestown mall-rat appearance that she has no taste of her own but she is like 26 and listens to KOIT?!?! I am baffled! -

According to the Divine Comedy, in the Inferno, there is a ring in the seventh circle reserved for those who spent their entire lives sitting behind a desk, doing nothing of value, adding nothing of value to society, just sitting there, their only incentive to even move being the fear of losing their jobs. Their fate is to roam around the circle, which is actually a pretty nice place, with trees and plants and all, except blaring from the louspeakers is KOIT. Nonstop, 24/7, for the rest of eternity, KOIT. Phil Collins, for the rest of eternity. Can You Feel The Love Tonight?, for the rest or eternity. Christmas songs, forever. FOREVER!
The hapless souls condemned to wallow on this plane just shuffle around with blank countenances, their souls crushed, all hope extinguished, their minds unable to experience any emotion, whether it be joy, anger, or sadness. The only thing that they still have the power to feel is Absence.
Virgil knew enough to bring earplugs, but Dante didn't, so with that Hey There Delilah song burrowing into his skull like a host of rapacious antlions he begged that they press on to somewhere more hospitable like the Lake of Boiling Shit, or something. -

It's a bad sign when the music you really liked in high school or college is playing on this station. What's worse is when they start playing a lot of songs from your younger days. But whatever.
KOIT is a nice alternative from the hard hitting beats of rap or the overly repetitive sound of high energy or even the much too mellow sounds of jazz.
Or maybe my ears have gotten overly sensitive in my old age.
I remember when we didn't have these fancy iPods things and carried our music on portable CD players. -

Lite Rock, Less Talk
I use to hate this radio station because my mom would ALWAYS listen to it in the car. All the "in" songs never played on this station, most were oldies. Music on this station does NOT change, they still play the same songs from a decade ago & throw in a few newer songs from the past year.
As I grew up, I changed maybe or my taste in music changed. When other kids were listening to the latest songs, I listened to this, so out of the loop. Maybe I'm just not embarrassed about it anymore...found out other people listened to it TOO. -

I don't care how much people make fun of me for listening to KOIT, I still like it! When I first moved to San Francisco, I was staying in my aunt's guest room. There wasn't much in the room save for a dresser, a sewing machine and an old stereo. KOIT was the only station that would come in clear...ah, the sweet sounds of Michael Bolton and Miami Sound Machine lulled me to sweet slumber that summer.
Now I'm subjected to non-stop Warren Zevon and AC/DC.
You may think good music has won, but who will listen to Gloria Estefan in her glory years? WHO!? -

I find it very amusing how every store in Chinatown has this station on (that or some tacky Chinese music). I'm also sure that half of those Chinese people don't understand the words coming out of the radio either.
I grew up listening to the 'light rock, less talk', so its pretty much ingrained in my brain. If I ever go crazy, I will have an excuse from your Bonnie Raitt, No Doubt medleys followed by a tortuous round of Amy Grant, and Kenny G. I'll just send the bill from the psycho ward to you KOIT. I'm sure I'll be rocking back and forth mumbling '96.5 light rock, less talk' over and over and over.
Oh, and Christmas music before Thanksgiving? Next year it will be on around Labor Day.
But good job on the Hall & Oates (yeah I suck, I know) -
Review from Mrs F.
San Francisco, CA
I now play this throughout the house during the day because KKSF is no longer a jazz station.
KOIT says they are "light rock, less talk" but they play a ton of commercials. They love Michael Buble. I really don't like "I Just Haven't Met You Yet," it is quite annoying.
Their play list comprises of 70s and 80s pop. Is there nothing more recent beside Michael Buble and Colbie Caillat? I love 70s and 80s stuff, but then your motto should reflect that, methinks...
Will keep searching for the right station. In the meantime, this station will do. -

Apparently 96.5 has the most listeners in the Bay Area (according to the 2009 Book of Lists)... very impressive! The music is a bit cheesy (okay, more than a bit cheesy!) but they play a pretty good variety and again, I must say, I love those non-stop Christmas tunes!

Alright, so I'm a sucka for ol' school music. Don't hate! Too bad I can't relive the era when the songs were hits back then and people would call in to request for a song to be played. Sorry Ryan Seacrest, but music just ain't the same as it was back then. Now that people have those mp3 players or Apple Ipods, can you even remember that we used to listen to CDs, Vinyls, and cassettes? Yeah, that's REAL ol' school. C'mon, we wouldn't have karaoke music to sing to if it weren't for the type of music we hardly listen to anymore. I mean, if you think about it...don't we all know a couple of the songs that are played on this radio station? Don't lie, because we all do!
As an added bonus, the day after Thanksgiving...the radio station will play non-stop Christmas music all day, everyday, until the day after Christmas.
In other words, I'm a happy camper that they still have this radio station and it's one of my favorites! Ninety-Six point fiiveeeee K-O-I-T!!! -

an extra star for giving false hope to my loser co-workers who listen for 9 frigging hours, convinced they will be lucky caller #25 and win $25,000. fools, all of them.
I am not looking forward to the upcoming Holiday season. imagine, 45-hour work weeks, hearing Jose Feliciano's Feliz Navidad every 2 hours, mixed in with those insufferable Chipmunks. have mercy on me -

I used to listen to Koit often years ago when I loved love songs. Over those years, someone killed love songs for me that I can never bear to hear another love song ever again. (That's when I switched over to Star.) This radio station is too depressing for me, especially when it's like, the second week of November when they start playing Christmas songs nonstop. Like seriously... I think I may shoot myself.

I switch between 92.7 Energy and KOIT 96.5 on my 45 min drive to work. I listen to 92.7 to pump up and energize for work but then when it gets too upbeat, I switch over to 96.5 to mellow down with my mood songs....for those "moments". Great listening pleasure for my scenic drive down 280 on those foggy days....

I'm always claiming radio is a dying medium, yet it's all I seem to talk about. I mean, there's no such thing as destination radio, unless it's NPR on Saturday mornings. Otherwise, the only time anyone listens to the radio is when they're driving and their car CD player is broken. That'd be me right now. Thus, I listen to a lot of radio and I have this to say:
KOIT (96.5) rules and here's why.
Reason #1: At 8pm every weeknight, they have 3 hours of cheesy love songs known as "Between the Sheets." Hilarious.
Reason #2: It's not even Thanksgiving, and they're playing all kinds of Christmas music. I was driving down Divis listening to Whitney Houston's "Little Drummer Boy." Being someone who gladly listens to Holiday tunes in June, I'm thrilled.
Reason #3: Their on air promos are always, like 12 minutes long, and the entire time, they're saying over and over again, "Less talk, more music. KOIT." That takes balls.
Reason #4: I ask you, who else plays Luther Vandross, my personal hero, at least twice a day?
Reason #5: KOIT makes you suffer through some pretty shitty music. But stick around and it pays off. You'll inevitably be rewarded with some obscure song from your childhood, taking you back to 1984, as was my experience yesterday. Ever hear a little song called "(I Ain't) Missing You" by John Waite. Good stuff. That's one of those songs that you'd drunkenly e-mail the lyrics to an ex. Or maybe that's just me...
I would just like to give a shout out to KOIT. Thanks for making easy listening truly rock. -

I am sorry to be in dischord with some fellow reviewers, but if you ever need to relax, say for example, at the dentist before having some drilling done, you are far better off relaxing to the quiet sounds of KOIT than let's say 107.7 The Bone. And yes, it is mostly when I am at the dentist that I listen to KOIT!
