21 reviews for 941 Theater
I saw Starkey, AC Slater, and Dev79 DJ here. The spot was pretty solid. I like the BYOB aspect. (No glass allowed, apparently, but they did not seem to worried about enforcing the rule.)
The main room is pretty large and wide. What makes this place absolutely solid is the SOUNDSYSTEM. The bass reverberated all over the dancehall - so deep and crisp! In dubstep, having a system that handles bass is absolutely essential, and 941 works it perfectly!
The back patio is also pretty nice - I'd like to see it when it is not basically freezing outside.
A few reasons why this place gets a top notch rating.
1. They're bringing touring punk bands back to the city. Saw on of SF's finest, the Revolts last week. And a few before that was Duane Peter's Gunfight.
2. You can bring cans of Colt 45 and they don't mind. Bring whatever you desire.
3. Always parking on the dark dirty streets.
4. A nice room to see a show.
5. Clean bathrooms.
6. A deck with a beautiful view out back for smoking.
7. You can throm bottles or rocks in the abandoned lot next door.
I've seen about a half dozen shows here (DJs, bands) over the past year. It's a great venue for the size, and the BYOB is hard to beat. Definitely a great place to check out a show.
Only a year has gone by since I was the first to drop a review on 941, But at the rate they've been bringing in more and more diverse events, you'd think that their one of the most seasoned live arts spaces in Philly.
So far thanks to 941 I have checked out great cinema during the Backseat Film Festival and beyond, rocked out to some fun concerts courtesy of Village Green Productions and others, Enjoyed listening to great bands and sipping on PBR while checking out the crafts at The Philadelphia Independent Craft Market, witnessed my friends Jellyboy The Clown and Barry Silver perform death defying side show stunts alongside Zamora the Torture King, and danced my ass off to psy-trance music while I was painted up as a zombie during the 3rd Annual Zombie Butt Touch Party. Not too shabby for one year if I do say so myself.
It goes with out saying that 941 is the only events space I can think of that has tried to host the diverse events lineup listed above under one roof. And the fact that they have pulled it off so successfully is what makes it pretty damn impressive. So if you haven't been there yet what are you waiting for?

I love this place and the guys who run it-- they are true pioneers!!
Whatever event is being held here you can bet it's going to be FUN!!
I have rented this venue for events, it's a great location and the staff is so accomadating and friendly.
This venue is a hidden gem in Philadelphia. It looks more like a Brooklyn or Boston venue with its decoratively painted walls and unique layout.
Low price covers; all ages; food and nonalcoholic drink sales are reasonable, unlike other large venues. Good size stage and room provides space for a large audience or dancing. For a band that can bring out a large following, this is the perfect venue.
Only a few blocks from the Spring Garden stop on the Blue Line.
Love this place! Have a F#%KIN' awesome time whenever I come here. Looking forward to the Backseat Film Festival starting tonight @ 7pm! (more info on their website http://www.backseatfil...)....
Make a point to check this place out or I will eat your soul!
I thought the venue deserved a rating for last night for sure.
Love that they are attempting to recycle, even if it's just with a cardboard box.
Love that there is plenty of interesting reading materials featuring the hippest of the DIY neighborhood folks and their assorted projects
Love the Kangaroo and his fountain of vodka.to include soap in the bathrooms and comfy chairs.
Love that this place has been renovated since my last visit
Love the owner guy for being so nice to me even though I acccidently smashed a full beer bottle.
And the final star will come if I ever see my poor guitar cord again....:(
The 941 Theater is one of my favorite places in the entire world, and has become like a second home to me.
Regardless if I'm working the event or not I always seem to end up having a blast.
It's a super chill environment with an anything goes type of attitude.
The 941 Theater is always improving and getting more and more amazing everyday and my entire heart is with this theater!
Very chill spot. This is a warehouse venue with good sound and a huge outdoor deck. The venue host everything from independent film fests to electronic music events. Free Beer! Wooooooooo
I work here from time to time, so I also biased, but this city needs places like 941. The Backseat crew has been there for me when I was new to the city and penniless. They gave me freelance crew jobs and I really appreciate them. That being said, one night I got to run projection for the Raiders of the Lost Ark Remake and I was more entertained than anyone in the audience! 12 year olds remake Indy shot for shot, for 3 hours! Really, everything comes through this theater if its DIY, one of the most important venues in the city.
Cheers!
Another satisfied patron of the Backseat Film Festival! Be warned, though: this is not your mama's theater (unless your mama happens to be an artsy film buff who isn't into frills - and in that case, I'd like to meet her and shake her hand). Don't expect stadium seating. Don't expect the $9.75 kid's snak pak. Hell, don't expect kids! And all these things are what make 941 so damn special.
The guys who run this place have put their blood, sweat and tears into getting the theater up and running - literally. By supporting this venture you're not only going to catch some amazing movies and events (the craft fair is coming soon!) but you'll be doing your part to support the local arts scene. There will also be complimentary drinks from time to time. And what's not to love about that?
What a great l'il (not so little, actually) space. You can tell that atrsy-theatre types have made this space what it is - and it is a GREAT multi-purpose "Black box" theatre with a great array of gigs/shows & films that can be showcased here.
GOOD JOB!!! I'm sold on 941!
I really like this space. I've been twice so far for the Zombie Sideshow and for the Village Green Kick off. Both times I've have a rollicking good time. The acoustics could be a bit better for shows, but I'm sure they'll work it out.
The kids who run the place are the ish--that's all I have to say about that.
This is my theater, so I am a little biased, but I think we have a great space!!
You can keep up to date on the calender at http://www.941theater.com, we have movie screenings coming up this weekend and on October 25th as well!
We have yet to even have our grand opening, we will announce it soon...much more to come, stay tuned!
The 941 Theater is, hands down, my favorite place to put on a show. We have done a number of events there so far and hope to have a long and fruitful relationship with the awesome dudes that own the space. Keep your eyes and ears open for the special nights when the 941 theater holds events, whether it be screenings, plays, craft fairs or rock n roll shows! You will surely not be disappointed!!
I haven't seen any films here yet, but I did check it out with some fellow Yelpers for the Zombie Sideshow last week, and boy was that fun. I like that it's a relatively clean yet no-frills space that's flexible enough to accommodate all sorts of events, whether films or firebreathing. I'm not sure if they rent it out for special events, but if you're looking for a space for something it might be worth checking out. The only downside is that the neighborhood is still a litle sketchy. But then again, that probably works in 941's favor when it comes to stuff like noise ordinances. Also, as of right now, it seems to be BYOB.
I like this place a lot. The size is perfect for a great party. small and intimate, without being small. It holds like 140 people, so that can be a prretty good sized event. And the people who run it are really cool. Very easy to talk to and get along with. But the space is great! I saw movies there and they always seem to have lots of beer and snacks. In the immortal words of Emil Antonowsky (Robocop)...I LIKE IT!!!
I guess I should have reviewed this a while ago when I went here to see the zombie sideshow. The venue is pretty big, mostly just wide open space that could be converted in to a lot of different set ups. The black walls, beat up leather couches, and basement feel took me back to my high school days going to see local hardcore bands play. Other than some circuitry issues & losses of power the venue did a good job hosting the show, which included everything from fire breathing indoors (everything being concrete/cinder blocks made this a pretty safe stunt), to people being suspended from the ceiling & a metal/rapcore band that blew the breakers. All in all a pretty fun event.
love this place for what it does, though i've yet to see an actual film here! (have witnessed plays & craft fairs aplenty though)
i did a craft show here a couple of weeks ago, and i really dug the space. i will def. be back for pretty much anything else...
