Ate there on 4.26.12.
This is my #2 sushi spot. Always fresh and Japanese sushi chefs. You can get a mix of trendy rolls and more authentic items. They have fresh wasabi, which is a must to get 5 stars. I have been going there since it was Galeo's! The addition of the bar, a while back, makes it a spot to hang and get away from the crowds. Great place for a date. -

My boyfriend and I came here because we follow our favorite sushi chef wherever he goes since he left Mosun in Laguna Beach. As usual he wow'd us. We sat at the sushi bar, as usal, and he and Ken both used to work at Mosun, so we had a great time laughing, telling stories, and enjoying ourselves on Valentine's day. I think they said it never gets too busy there, but they're used to how Mosun (which is now closed) used to have a 2 hour wait.
I gave it 4 stars instead of 5, not because of the sushi chefs (they're what makes me love the place) but because it just doesn't have the trendy atmosphere that I'm used to. But what rocks is the really yummy sushi, and I should know since what I love is sushi, and the great sushi chefs. Go check em out! -

kinda weird to walk into a sushi restaurant filled with white people
well what did we expect? its newport
so we went in reppin the asian peepz, the only other asians were a waitress and a chef
chill but pricey spot
3 peepz, over $130, still a lil hungry
fish is pretty fresh: A-

Very good sushi. I forget what the spicy rice sushi appetizer was called but it was great. Had a jalapeno on top (Tuna Crispy Rice I think). Yellow tail and spicy tuna were great. Bar did an exceptional job as well.

I have been meaning to write this for a while. My bf and I always went to Mosun in Laguna Beach for Sushi. Since it closed we've been looking here and there at different places. We decided to try out 930 Sushi. It was DELICIOUS!. The only thing is it's a little on the pricey side. But aside from that we loved the place, the lighting and decor were great. now for the food, here's what we ordered
spicy sashimi- loved it, it's on their appetizers and came in a martini glass. Its 5 different fish with some kind of spicy marinade on it. It wasn't was we expected but it was oh so good.
crunchy roll
yellow tail roll
930 roll- another favorite, its the fish and instead of rice it was wrapped with cucumber. Good for low carbers
We've only been the one time but i would definitely go back. Maybe look into seeing if they have a happy hour or sushi night where its a little bit cheaper -

tiny little place, but plenty of parking for it! Fresh fish, yummy rolls and fantastic service.
Don't forget to try the Hot and the Special 930. so good... -

Step 1: Order your drinks.
Step 2: Tell the chef or waitress "Chef's choice".
Step 3: If there is any fish that you don't like, let them know.
Step 4: Get out your credit card cause it's a little pricey.
That's it! Enjoy the unbelievable array of sushi that they place before you! Generous cuts of FRESH fish, Sapporo on tap, full bar and a pleasant & friendly staff! Peggy at the bar is awesome!
This place ROCKS!! -

Very small place but traditional for a Japanese restaurant I guess. Food was good but I had better. Hard to find parking. Great pricing compared to other sushi restaurant 's in Newport

I'll go with 4.5-5 stars on this place. I have been here at least 5 times for various occasions. The only reason I would knock off .5 point is because they have almost no beer selection, just the standard sushi bar beers. I am a beer snob though.
Anyway, the service is good, the chefs are friendly, the atmosphere is relaxing. They have some custom rolls that you can enjoy - my new favorite is the Geisha roll. Another all time favorite is the 930 roll. Otherwise you can get all the standards in FRESH form.
Highly recommend. -

My husband and I love this place. It is our go to sushi joint. He loves the crispy tuna rice. I love the ambiance here versus other sushi restaurants. The price is a bit high but occasionally it is a nice splurge. The waitresses and waiters are a bit slow, so be patient.

It's 7 pm and the parking lot is empty. I've been to 930 sushi many times. Sushi is average and over priced. However, customer service sucks. They threatened to tow my car when I walked over to mozza pizzeria! The parking lot is empty! I will never give them my business because his is just petty.

This is my #1 go-to spot for sushi! I usually come on Fridays and a few times I've had Tee as my server. Service is quick and the food comes out very fast! She was speedy and kept our drinks full the entire time. The atmosphere is better compared to other places. The food is fresh and amazing! Would definitely recommend this place to any sushi lover.

Usually I wouldn't give American Japanese Fusion Sushi places more than 3 stars .. but I gotta say, this place is pretty fresh.
I didn't get to try most of their sashimi..
How I rate a place's freshness .. is I order their Uni.
I base my judgement on their Uni (Sea Urchin).
Got 3 different rolls, uni sashimi and soft shell crab.
Lobster roll - not bad. Comparing to my usual place, they're pretty good.
Rainbow Roll - average, the fish didn't taste nor look super fresh.
Caterpillar Roll - very rarely, you can go wrong with it. I mean it's just very easy flavors, you're basically eating the sauce and avocado. ANY sushi place, should not be able to mess this up. (Which they didn't).
Soft shell crab, deep fried. Almost anything deep fried - is GOOD.
Now.. uni, their uni.
It's pretty damn fresh, well, given that they are right next to the water - it's gotta be right ?
So average rolls, but fresh uni.
If I ever were in the area, I'd want to try the other sashimi.
------
Good ambience.
Tiny waitresses.
Big bong that the sushi chefs ring every 15 min.
Decent Prices.
Not big enough table space. -

still love this place. came back again last week and everything was wonderful. food was fresh and tasty. service was excellent. the music was down but it wasnt too bad because it was a somewhat busy night.
i laugh at any bad reviews this place gets because it isn't true. especially the one about the car towing. i could have sworn i saw like fifty signs that said "no mozza parking, cars will be towed" that means theyre gonna tow your ass if u park there and go to mozza. duh.1 Previous Review: Show all »

Came here with a very lucky date LOL On the eve of X-mas. They were debating to be open that evening or not, so they called my date and told him they decided to be open AWESOME no lame 6 oclock closing here. We got there around 7ish and we picked anywhere we wanted to dine. We wanted privacy so we choose a half booth. The waitress we had was really nice and cute. The sushi chefs seemed very personable and you can tell this place has a lot of regulars, especially silver foxes, this place is in the same center as the Ferrari dealership.
We ordered various nigiri and yellowtail kama. Every thing was fresh and no compliants, my kama came out very hot (heat hot) and it was gooooood. I love Kama and cheek plates, they are the best! My martini was made strooonng (Purple geisha) had two of those. As the night went on some regulars came in and the sushi chefs lit up, doing tons of shots of patron with shots of oyster and uni shots ewwww lol Oh yea and they love hitting the gong. I'd definitely come back here on a weekend night, I bet they really get crazy with the shots!
Thank you guys for being open on X-mas eve, you made my night! -
Review from Cat H.
Sometimes you really gotta' love sushi virgins. Popped in with someone who swears by this place despite what I'd call a little bit of hesitation about fish. A couple of sakis and beer later, he was working his way through a rainbow roll, spider roll and a spicy yellowtail roll like a champ. And seriously working his way through the "wasabi." I put that in quotes because after mountains of this stuff, you barely sort of catch the tiniest bit of spice, but not much. It's obviously not real wasabi.
Decor wise, it's small but lovely. Smell wise, dear Lord, don't go anywhere near the bathroom. All in all, the place is cute, but their quality of sushi is really only 2 star on its best day. -

I used to live right up PCH from this not super well known sushi bar and I absolutely LOVE IT!!!!!
Fresh, cold, fab sake selection, impeccable service, high end- NOT high snob and just plain old YUMTASTIC!
On a Friday night the atmosphere is buzzing with that electric date night sexual tension and the sushi chefs will drink along with you and provide a fantastic "their choice" if you let them... and I say, be adventurous, you only live once!
Personally, I think their fatty tuna is other worldly and their spicy scallop roll will blow your mind... if you're feeling especially daring, watch the chef execute your very own shrimp... for sweet shrimp (raw)! To finish off the evening... try the tempura bananas, they're damn near orgasmic!
Sushi 930 also offers some pretty good specials... including: 7 nights a week from 5:30pm-7pm, $3 drafts & $5 well drinks! M-F from 5pm-6pm they offer 20% off of your total bill and Saturday nights they have $7 specialty martinis.
Go and enjoy Sushi 930 and tell Toma that Tara says HI :)Listed in: Here Fishy Fishy Fishy!

Service was great, atmosphere nice, fish fine but pricey for quality. Rolls were ok. Really paying for the atmosphere versus the sushi quality - not that it's bad, but i have had same quality for 30-40% less in price.

Came here for the first time last Saturday night and was really pleasantly surprised! our waitress was such a sweetheart. I wish we caught her name but she was very helpful from the moment we sat down. She explained everything to us from what was in the cocktails to what each roll was. We ordered 3 of the specials that were to die for. The tater tot was an amazing twist on spicy tuna and crispy rice and we enjoyed every single bite! Sushi nachos were extremely unique and equally delicious! Something unlike we've seen on any other sushi menus in the area. Overall a great meal and the price was really not bad 100$ (including tip) for 3 people with a bottle of sake and cocktails. We definitely found our new favorite spot in Newport!

Sit at the sushi bar- you won't regret it. The only Japanese you'll ever need to know is "omakase" = Chef's choice. T(as a rule Sunday is not the day for Sushi. if you're a fiend for freshness, find out what day your sushi spot gets their fish delivery) the sushi chefs at 930 will serve up melt in your mouth uni, fresh sashimi complex specialty rolls and nigiri that fit perfectly in your your fish trap! They'll dish out plenty of laughs and make sure your in good hands bite after bite!

This is almost as good as Nic San in Cabo.
The sushi is fresh, and delicious and the atmosphere is cozy with limited seating and nice long sushi bar.
It's very zen like when you walk in and you are greeted with people who are anxious to help you and suggest items from their menu.
We had tons of food last night from the sashimi to seared ahi to tons of fresh rolls.
The summer, lobster, crunchy rolls all stood out and the their chilled sake is fantastic.
I haven't had fried tempura ice-cream since Sushi on Sunset days so I was so excited to have it here last night.
A definite come back spot for good sushi! -
Review from Anita L.
Came here with some friends who live nearby. The one who suggested it did say he came a while back and thought it wasn't bad, however, he only started eating sushi/sashimi less than a year ago. Since it was my first time meeting him, I had nothing to judge by and thus, followed along hoping for the best and thinking it's another place I can yelp about.
It is in a strange location, sharing the strip mall with the Ferrari dealership. It's easy to miss, but if you REALLY want to go, look for the Ferrari dealership.
We managed to get a seat at the sushi bar which was really cool. The decor is nice with wooden benches at the sushi bar and a few smaller tables. The place doesn't seat many and by the looks of its mid week clientele, the place seemed pretty packed at 8.20pm.
Everyone agreed on sashimi and the server recommended some 'fresh' and 'live' items they had for specials. We started off with hirame (halibut) which was recommended as one of the daily specials. Presentation wasn't bad. The little plate consisted of 5 slices of halibut which looked promising. However, after one bite, the fish was very fishy and left a bad taste in my mouth.
Salmon sashimi ($11) was next and I was surprised that only 4 pieces were offered given the price -- more than the halibut which is apparently live -- but at least the salmon had some flavor and brought back my confidence slightly after the halibut.
The person who recommended this place said he tried a dish before with monk fish liver and asked the sushi chef about it. However, the chef wasn't able to recall what it was and suggested we have it just as sashimi. I love ankimo and was excited, until we got the ankimo and it looked anemic (see photo). My BFF was the first to taste upon which she said to me "you're not gonna like it". Strangely it had absolutely no taste to it. I've never had ankimo like this before. It was served with a ponzu sauce but no amount of ponzu is going to revive any flavor from this piece of synthetic tasting ankimo. SAD!
Crispy rice ($6.95) was the only thing we ordered off the menu and thank god it wasn't bad. Rice topped with tuna (or spicy tuna -- can't remember exactly) is fried creating a nice crunch on the outside and is slightly soft on the inside. If you don't like that stick to your teeth texture, don't get it because that's exactly what happens. It sticks to your teeth!
Our friend again decides to put his trust in the sushi chef and tells him he had something before using shiso tempura. After much debate, he tells the chef to make something SPICY -- as spicy as he can -- with shiso tempura. His reasoning behind this was because me and my BFF have a super high tolerance for heat and he wanted to see how much we could handle. We naturally rolled our eyes.
The end result was shiso tempura topped with tuna and some chili concoction the chef has made ($11). My first impression was that it was SO greasy. The shiso tempura was fried way too long and using the wrong batter so it wasn't light but very heavy. I couldn't even taste the shiso. As for the topping, it wasn't hot at all, at least not for me or my BFF. When you touch the concoction on your lip for example (by mistake and not by choice mind you) it leaves a burning sensation on your lip, but your tongue, which ordinarily feels the heat, doesn't feel anything. It was too weird. The dish left a burning sensation on the roof of my mouth too, but nothing on my tongue. It wasn't a pleasing dish due to its overwhelming greasiness.
By now my BFF and I were very disappointed, but neither of us wanted to leave before eating our favorite -- UNI. So, we said this would be our last dish even though we weren't full. We just didn't want to eat anymore less than mediocre food.
My BFF asked the chef if the uni was fresh. She demanded he show us before serving us. When he brought it out it looked really fresh and thank god, it was the best thing we had the entire evening. Plump and large pieces of uni (and a few not so plump pieces) were extremely flavorful which at least redeemed 930 just a tad, although, not enough for me to give it a higher rating, not even with the company I shared this meal with.
Service was okay. Sometimes our tea cups were refilled, other times we had to ask. The food wasn't THAT expensive. It's on par with the other finer sushi places around, but sadly, the quality isn't anywhere near that of the others I like to frequent in OC. Needless to say, this won't be a place I'd be returning to nor will I be recommending it to anyone looking to be satiated by sushi/sashimi. -
Review from Amador A.
Cerritos, CA
I saw a news segment on Good Day LA a while back about this place and it looked great. http://www.myfoxla.com...
I finally had the opportunity to come here for an early dinner date and was not disappointed.
The place opened a little after 5PM. We had arrived at around 4:50 so we had about 20 minutes before they opened and decided to walk next door to the Ferrari dealership to ogle at cars... [sigh] I was afraid to breathe on them wrong, but it was beautiful to admire up close.
Once it opened, we were the first ones in... the place is nicely decorated, soft dim lighting with some dance music playing softly in the background. There are small tables that line the walls that are able to sit 2 - 4 and one table that can seat 6 where you have to sit cross-legged on pillows. I would guess the place can seat about 40+.
The sushi chefs were very friendly, the hostesses were HOT, and the place started to fill up pretty quickly after opening.
We quickly got to ordering our usuals - Yellow Tail, Salmon, Spanish Mackerel, Unagi, Caterpillar Roll, and Salmon Skin Handroll.
I judge a sushi bar by the quality of their Yellow Tail... I'm very picky.
I have to say, this Yellow Tail was probably the BEST I've ever had... and the quality of each fish that came out... my oh my... multiple sushi orgasm.
We started to get adventurous by trying some new things on the menu - we tried something called a Dynamite Roll... it was a little messy to eat, but I wanted to ask for a spoon so I could scoop up every last bite. Also had an AWESOME oyster shooter! The chef also suggested some other sushi for me to try - I loved it all...
After we were almost stuffed, I found out that the BEST stuff to order isn't even on the menu.
The place has GREAT ordinary sushi... but what I found out is that each sushi chef has their own signature somthin'-somthin'... apparently everyone else eating was already aware of that fact and the dishes I saw that were being served... phenomenal.
Depending on how much you eat the place can get quite expensive. We were so stuffed, we couldn't eat another bite...
For 2 people + 2 cokes + tip: $143
If you want really great sushi, you've gotta give 930 Sushi a try. You can order off the menu, or ask the sushi chefs to make you something special!
They take reservations and from what I've seen, it would be a good idea. The first time I drove by to check the place out, they had already closed... but the place was PACKED - every table and bar seat was taken.
I hate to say it... but UZEN Sushi just might have been dethroned as my favorite sushi bar. -

Out of the couple dozen sushi places I've tried here in OC this is definitely my favorite. Friends and I regularly hit this place up about 1x a week.
If your looking for a couple great rolls that aren't on the menu ask for:
- Sweet Yam Tempura Roll
One of my favorites and almost like a dessert roll it's so good.
- Grilled Vege Roll
Want a vege option but tired of the regular vege roll which is super crunchy then definitely try this one out. -

I went here on date and was pleasantly surprised. I have never noticed it before because it is right next to the farari dealership.
It has a modern design and decor and tables are comfortably spread out. I enjoyed their specialty rolls and the atmosphere. -

I would say it's good not great. Good quality but you have to pay for it. Tiger roll is great, and above average spice tuna.
The one thing I do really like is the decor. Lounge styled and puts you in the mood as a pregame dinner before going out. Friendly service every time I've been there.
It's a place you go to impress someone more than enjoy a meal. It's good but there are other places I prefer in the area. -

I've definitely experience better sushi. The service was slow, the food was expensive and overall, I didn't like the atmosphere. I've been to better. It's not worth it for the price. Save your money and go elsewhere.

Went here with friends a couple times for sushi. Yellow tail is yummy.
I have a special place in my heart for their crunchy roll. I know, I know its not "real" sushi but it is so yummy and melts in your mouth and yeah you have to try it.
Atmosphere is nice, I like that you can sit on the small patio during the summer, the weather is great. The inside is small and quaint so on the weekend be prepared to wait.
Of course while you are there have some Saki!!!! -

Went here for a business dinner. The decor is really nice, the tables are a bit narrow and it's a bit dark in here. I do however, like the lighting they have on the sushi chefs. The sushi bar is very bright, you can see them work their magic on the rolls and sushi is on display. All looks very clean. The service was good, just a bit slow. We ordered;
- miso soup (very good, a bit salty for me)
- Rainbow roll (very good, fish was fresh, however not enough avocado)
- Special 930 (i loved this roll, it was so fresh and crisp)
- Caterpillar ( this roll was also very good, it wasn't heavily saturated with the eel sauce, which is a plus)
- Salmon Sashimi with a delicious sauce
- Ono (this is my favorite sashimi piece here)
- Tuna Sashimi with sauce and jalepeno (very good)
The fish was very fresh and all the sashimi pieces literally melted in your mouth... It is expensive but then again, IT IS in Newport Beach and their monthly lease must be ridiculous. All in all, I would definitely be returning and trying more of their pieces. -

$9 for a Spicy Tuna Roll? Give me a break. I guess thats my own fault.
The lunch combo is $11- a very good deal. I have tried doing takeout for dinner and 3 rolls ended up costing me over $60. Never again.
Staff is great, but fish is a little too fishy for my tastes on many occasions. -

My friend Ashley really wanted to try out this restaurant and finally had an excuse when the hubby and I came for a visit last weekend. She's actually tried a couple of times to get in but it was too busy. She made reservations for our party of four, not necessary but this place stays busy and doesn't have a plethora of tables or sushi bar spaces available.
We ordered Tuna Tataki, Albacore Tataki, Albacore Nigiri, Tiger Roll, 930 Roll, Yellowtail Roll, and the Fire Roll. Everything was extremely fresh! The fish melted away in your mouth and the flavors worked really well together. Order the Fire Roll, it's not on the menu but it's got it's own pizazz that shouldn't be missed. The one bummer was that the albacore is seared, it doesn't detract from the simple, velvety flavors of the fish, but it isn't necessary.
Prices were resonable although portions could have been a little bigger. The tempura banana with ice cream is a perfect ending to the night. I have a feeling we'll be making future visits to 930 Sushi. -

The Best EEL Sushi I have ever tasted. The freshness and soft texture of the eel sushi made me order 2nds and 3rds.
The place itself was a bit cramped and overpriced, but the sushi and rolls were above average.
Also, we made the mistake of not making reservations in advance, and so we had to wait for about a half an hour to get seated.... so make reservations!Listed in: Date Time

Ate here on Dec 4 2008. This place is very alright. As far as your standard newport are sushi place goes, its among the best. The fish was fresh and they have a wide selection. My stomach wasnt destroyed within a few hours like it is after most B-grade sushi joints.
The service was decent and the sake selection was very good. The location is kind of weird being sandwiched in by all the car dealerships. I wouldn't rush to go back there but I would consider it. -
Review from Gautam S.

Be sure to make a rezzie before you hit 930 and be there on time - they're pretty strict about you getting there on time.
Being a veggie, I get a lot of quizzical looks when I suggest this place but their non-fish rolls are amazing! The signature yam tempura roll is really good and worth the wait as are the veggie rolls. My non-veggie friends are big fans of the yellowtail (very fresh and very good) - never heard a dissenting opinion :-)
Bottom line - if you like fresh, flavorful sushi - this is the place.
