I wanted to write this review mostly to praise Mara Davis. I can honestly say she is by far the best radio DJ these ears have ever heard. Not only is she knowledable, and insightful about music, but she has made me laugh out loud at least 10 times; one time brought me to tears.
I am not quite sure if it's the tone of her voice (a little yankee with a hint of your best friend's jewish mother), or just the dry humor that makes me chcukle. However, any person that is ok with co-hosting a show with her mom (who may be funnier than her) every once in awhile is worth listening to.
I think they should move her into the morning spot, and replace the new crew they have now. Thanks for keeping me entertained in the car Mara!

I'm a music snob. I am a passionate indie music lover who can't stand to listen to pre-fabricated, mellow music. "Uh, uh, uh, take me to your room, kiss me in the dark, love me like no one, you're the only one (after a dozen before)..." Ugh. Ugh. Ugh. TOXIC. All those "singers" sound exactly the same, but are different people in real life.
That's why I run away from commercial radio stations like Ivan S. would from a TV playing an endless loop of Rachel Ray's "30 Minutes Meals" show (hehehehe).
Give me some Broken Social Scene, Deerhunter, The Most Serene Republic, Apostle of Hustle or Le Loup and I will be happy!
"Le what?"
But to be fair, anytime I have to turn on the radio, I do go straight to Dave FM. They still incur in imperfections such as the one called Maroon 5, but overall, their music is pretty eclectic and cool. Their best feature is that they have a soft spot for my childhood decade, those mighty, mighty eighties. I get super excited whenever I can sing-a-long some Talking Heads, The Clash or the good songs of Genesis.
Besides, this radio station manages to have some highlights that shine nicely:
1. Acoustic Sunrise: great, unexpected show, even though you have to get up early to listen to it!
2. Mara Davis: she makes my day...whenever I'm cranky or sad, I listen to her. She has such good energy!
3. DJ Margo: she's the quintessential cool chick. I love her.
It would be a perfect world if they play more Velvet Underground...or more David Bowie than The Police (I like The Police, but they're a little obsessed). Not certainly Devendra Banhart...whenever that happen, I will work for them for free.

I gave 92.9 a chance fairly recently, on the recommendation of a friend...wow. Wow! So many excellent songs I haven't heard since my college days (not that I graduated that long ago, but...), and such a good mix of stuff that I actually do want to hear. I have yet to hear a song on this station that I flat-out don't like.
My only complaint is that I heard Seal's "Crazy" about 4 times in 2 days due to bad timing, and it's been stuck in my head ever since.
I'm not yet familiar with all the deejays and programming just yet, but I really love that I can listen to MUSIC on the way to work in the morning, and not people acting like they rule the city. If I forget to bring in fresh CDs or if my mp3 player dies, I know I can listen to them for something good and upbeat on my commute.

Ok, first I must admit that I bust on dave fm a lot because everytime (feels that way) I turn it on they have Sting/Police playing and it drives me insane! I don't hate Sting; I find his music, in general, pretty boring.
4 stars then?? Well, Acoustic Sunrise, weekend mornings starting at 7am, more than redeems their overplaying of the Tantric Master. Acoustic Sunrise is pure brilliance!

When I am lucky, I get to switch our radio at work to this station. I would much rather listen to their eclectic mix of music than Star 94 any day. Especially since it's the lesser evil of our two approved radio stations.
I am giving this station four stars for the DJs Margot & Mara Davis. Mara Davis hosts a program called "Radio Free Lunch" on weekdays. She picks a theme and asks people to email her ideas for songs and comes up with some obscure stuff on her own that fits the theme. Pretty cool idea.
But Margot.....ohhhhh Margot you are so cool. Like Nikki said, she comes on after 7PM and plays the best music that station can offer. A little bit of everything, usually with a theme, and always something you'll have heard before, but maybe something you haven't as well. One night she played all indie pop, which was a really interesting thing to hear on that station....I could have sworn I was listening to Album 88 or something.
Acoustic Sunrise is a great program they have every Saturday and Sunday morning, and since I have lots of love for that program, I've reviewed it separately.

Man, was I mad when my favorite radio station, Z93, got ditched after nearly 20 years of bringing the best classic rock to the metro area. This new radio station, dave fm, took over and I swore I would never forgive them for stealing Z93 from me.
Well, one night I was driving home from the airport and my i pod was locked in the trunk so I was forced to listen to the radio. I turned it to dave.fm and heard Jeff Buckley on the radio- say what? I have never heard him on a non-college station. I stayed tuned and found out that this glorious human being named Margot was playing my music! I still had Z93's number ingrained in my head so I called her up and told her how awesome she is, and she is seriously one of the nicest people on the air!
So, I was intrigued... I continued to listen over the weeks and by golly, she played some pretty decent music on this station! Of course, I hear John Mayer and that one popular guy... Dave Matthews? a little too much during the day, but they play a good mix of 70's, 80's, 90's and today, and some obscure stuff as well.
But my true love still lies with Margot. She DJ's week nights from 7 pm until midnight, and usually has a theme- she will play the bands who influenced a certain band, or focus on a certain genre of music that most people have no idea exists (she did a great shoegazer night! I was crying I was so happy!) so I'm glad to hear my music on a station every once and awhile that isn't fuzzy.
Margot is a beautiful encyclopedia of great music and I bet she could blow a few of us smarty pants right out of the water with her extensive musical knowledge! Dear God how I wish I could be her one day!
