Went with one of my best friends to the show and we both absolutely loved it. It certainly isn't changing the world, but will entertain and make you laugh.
Stephanie J. Block is amazing, as always, Megan Hilty nailed the Dolly Parton originated role and Allison Janney's delivery and comedic timing were perfect.
I would go see this over and over. Congratulations ladies, job well done!
...WHAT A WAY TO MAKE A LIVING!"
I have never seen the movie but the musical is pretty fun to watch! The 3 lead women steal the show and Allison Janney (who you know as the mom from Juno), was HILARIOUS!
I'm gonna be honest, when you look in the crowd, you are for sure surrounded by lots of older folks but it makes it that much more enjoyable cause just watching them laugh made me laugh! It's a fun musical to see if you get the opportunity!

This isn't a Broadway ground-breaker by any means, but it is a a fun and fluffy feel-good musical based on a 1980 movie starring Dolly Parton (who did the music for this show). I'll be the first to admit that my primary reason to see this show was for Allison Janney (score for Broadway celeb casting)
Janney, by the way, is utterly hilarious--both because she's an incredible actor (most people know her from "The West Wing," but she was Juno's mother and also the guidance counselor-cum-erotica author in "10 Things I Hate About You") but also because her singing is...a bit weak. Sit close though, because you'll want to see her facial expressions.
Stephanie Block (as the uptight "new girl" in the office) and Megan Hilty (emulating Dolly Parton, "Backwoods Barbie" style), who play the two other female leads, are far superior singers, compensating for somewhat weaker acting skills and less materialized roles.
Actually, the whole plot isn't really materialized, but since it's based on the titular film, not much can be done about that. The rest of the cast serves mostly to keep things moving along, accordingly. Marc Kudisch spends a bulk of the show gamely suspended in mid-air, and Ann Harada (from "Avenue Q" fame) has a bit part.
The sets were impressive--for some odd reason, I was particularly drawn to the overhead office light fixtures. The visual gag of the boss' office chair wasn't overused, making it an amusing touch.
Possibly some of the most awkward choreography I've seen in awhile. I know it takes place in an office, but there's only so many ways to pirouette while handing off a manila folder.
Overall, I'd say that the gist of Brantley's review in NYTimes was fairly accurate, particularly when he writes, "this show feels assembled by an emulous shopaholic who looked around at the tourist-drawing hits of the last decade and said: 'I want some of that. And that. Ooh, and can I have that, too?'" (*note: I totally felt this way about "Toxic Avenger," except on a less grandiose scale, of course).
Anyway, definitely a good time if you want a few laughs and aren't expecting to leave the theater with a new perspective on life.
Tip: Use the code "1JUDY" through Ticketmaster or at the box office to get discounted tickets (35% to 45% off) through June 14.

I thoroughly enjoyed this show. This is a big Broadway Show and does not disappoint. The sets are amazing, the choreography, acting and singing superb by all. Allison Janney is fantastic as Violet, as is Marc Kudisch as Franklin Hart. Megan Hilty is spectacular as Doralee Rhodes (Dolly Parton's original role). She looks like her and reproduces Dolly's voice (both talking and singing) identically. When people hear the Original Broadway Soundtrack, (if they don't know better) they'll think that Dolly is actually singing.
All the great one liners are still there. The musical resembles the movie a great deal, with some new content that makes it feel refreshing and new. Dolly wrote all of the new music and all is good. This is definitely a well produced and acted, feel good Musical.
I highly recommend this show.
this musical is a must see for any broadway fan! the cast was absolutely incredible, from the main characters to supporting cast - everyone is extremely talented.
the show is based off the movie 9 to 5, which starred Jane Fonda, Lily Tomlin and Dolly Parton (an all-star cast to say the least).
being a huge fan of the original movie, i was beyond ecstatic when i heard that they were bringing it to broadway - and they definitely brought it. Dolly Parton wrote all of the music for the show and it was seriously fantastic and did not disappoint at all.
from start to finish, we were entertained. the music was fantastic, the story line holds your attention (it's funny and a little racey at time), the customs are great and the set design is awesome!
this is definitely a show that will last and won't disappoint.
I was lucky enough to see this musical 4 times at it's world premier here in Los Angeles prior to it's Broadway debut. The music is WONDERFUL, but was very disappointed when I went to see it on Broadway last week (July 9th, 2009) that several of the songs were cut ("Tattletales," "Out of Control," "The One I Love," "Mundania," and "Well-Oiled Machine") and not replaced, or replaced with ones that were not as good and catchy. The soundtrack (out July 14th) is something to look forward to, but sad that the original cut songs will probably disappear forever. The show is still great fun, Mr. Hart (Marc Kudisch) and Roz (Kathy Fitzgerald) steal the show. The ending in the Los Angeles version stayed pretty true to the film, but the Broadway ending is quite different. I have a soft spot for the film "9 to 5," and will probably go see it again on my next visit to the big apple, if it is still there. The night I went, the seats were about 3/4 full. Go see it while you can!
