Review from Sachin M.
San Clemente, CA
This place may just be my favorite place for sushi in San Clemente. That is when I'm able to get a seat, because this place gets pretty crowded during peak hours such as the weekend evenings.
I usually stick to sushi thats not too dressed up like those spider rolls or California rolls that they like to serve at other sushi places. I prefer simple sushi, like Uni, yellowtail, tuna or whatever's fresh and what the sushi chef recommends. Last time I took the chefs recommendation, I had a quickly seared scallop. Thats something that I never had at other sushi place and it was really good! The other offerings I had were seasoned very lightly, enhancing the fresh seafood.
Last time I was there, they were out of a lot things. The chef made some very good suggestions and the sushi was very fresh tasting, which is why I'm definitely going to come back. I may wait for my spot at the sushi table, but its worth it. -

We found this place on http://restaurant.com drove all the way from costa mesa. We did omakase, so here's what we had:
poki salad: tastes like chinese style chicken?
shishito pepper wrap in tuna tataki: way too salty
9 style white fish mushroom: the only "ok" one
and then a whole bunch of seared sushi, which we think their fishes weren't fresh enough to serve it raw.
then we asked for Toro, uni, sweet shrimp, and monkfish liver...but none of them are in stock!
I guess the chef felt sorry afterward, so he gave us some complimentary ice cream...but overall I would say pretty disappointed, since we drove 45 mins there, hungry; and didn't get to eat the stuff that we like... -

9 style is a good sushi place. The Koba roll is very good, mushroom with white fish appetizer is excellent and I really recommend their crunchy rolls. Probably the best I have had.
Atmosphere is decent. Lots of Japanese yelling back and forth which adds to the fun. It's a bit like ordering sushi at Hattori Hanzo's joint in Kill Bill II.
Servers are pleasant enough, but they seemed overwhelmed by the crowd. This place gets busy. I recommend you make reservations if you are planning a night out with your paisano's, especially during peak dinning hours. Maybe because it was a Saturday night but our server disappeared towards the end of the night and we had to hunt down other servers to get drink refills. This normally irritating task of hunting down wait staff didn't bother me as much since I attributed it to them not having enough people to handle the crowd. A problem they should address but I didn't take it personally.
This place is cramped! I don't mind small settings (I actually prefer to large, chain restaurants) but there is no room to move in this joint. When packed to capacity, You have to pole-vault over other patrons to get to the bathrooms.
Waiting for a table is also an issue. Get use to waiting outside unless you want to give a lap dance to the people sitting at the sushi bar. They need to rearrange their tables or remove a couple to make it more comfortable to garner another star. I still recommend you give it a try. I will go back. -

The salmon sashimi was not fresh and very stringy. It didn't look at all like the guests at our neighboring tables received. It could be because we came in with a gift certificate. It looked like they served us the least desirable pieces. Disappointing.

From the outside, this little sushi place doesn't look like much, but boy do they serve good sushi! The chefs and waitresses are friendly and attentive. Judging from what other yelpers have posted, the place gets busy, but we got lucky and had the place almost all to ourselves for a weekday lunch.

This is a very reasonable place to get good quality Sushi. The staff was friendly and the food was above average. I went for lunch and had the Sushi platter with a side order of albacore sashimi. The price was great and the food delicious. Going for lunch will save you a few dollars due to the lunch menu. The only reason I could not justify giving 5 stars was the restaurant itself. It was small and not very elegant, but that is probably why the price was so good.

I just moved to San Clemente a few months ago... I didn't think there would be any decent Asian food here, period. I was wrong, very wrong indeed (well, I think this is the ONLY one I've found so far... Chinese and Vietnamese restaurants here are still very disappointing.)
Although they still serve "sushi rolls" there, their real sushi are actually very good. They still have the more "Japanese" items such as the monk fish liver, fermented soy beans, etc. They tend to use a lot of sweet ponzu sauce on the sushi, I honestly think the fish is fresh enough and is better had they not put the sauce on them.
My favorite here are the aji (spanish mackerel) and the tai (red snapper) omg... so fresh, so tasty!! The sweet onion salad's also great... not to mention about the quail egg shooters (oh man, the list would just keep growing...)
The staff are really nice too... So go early since the place is kinda small. -

It weird that I don't want to just eat the sushi but I also want to roll around in it and giggle?
Divine.
And the service is great!

GO HERE.
I'm not kidding. That is, if you're into really awesome things.
The sushi here is DELISH. The rolls are unique and creative. I always get the Ojisan Roll (I think that's the name) Its all fish wrapped in cucumbers with a spicy peanut sauce ish thing on the side. So if you're not a rice lover, this is a place that you will enjoy.
Along with the first roll I mentioned I've had the following: the Garlic 9 (good, but I'm not that into California Rolls with a yummy explosion on top. Why cant the whole roll be a yummy explosion and not half fake sushi?), The Lettuce Wrap Roll which is fish and avocado and some other veggies with all fresh fish and a shrimp I think, the Spicy Tuna Crunchy Roll which is a Spicy Tuna Roll deep fried so an obvious winner and a Spicy Yellowtail Handroll that was not too much rice (hate when they do that with hand rolls) and great spicy sauce.
The service is good. The sushi chefs all say "Hello!" when you walk into the place. I am assuming that they are saying that since it is in another language.
I've eaten at many a sushi joints. MANY. And I would say that whoever didn't like this place is way too much of a sushi snob to appreciate good sushi, which they probably wouldn't know anyway. -

San Clemente, CA
I went there a couple weeks ago with a restaurant coupon for $25 off. The coupon stated "valid for cash." The manager said that meant you could only pay with cash. My girlfriends and I only had our cards. We would have definitely come prepared with cash if the coupon said you can only use this coupon if you pay in cash or something along those lines, but it didn't. Valid for cash means valid for cash also known as you can use it as cash.
So I asked the manager kindly if she would cut us a break, since there was a clear discrepancy in their terms and conditions. She did not oblige and was quite rude.
WILL NOT BE GOING BACK!
Sushi wasn't that good either. -

Wow, this place is spectacular! I've been to many different sushi places, and for this price and quality, I'm not sure you can find a better value.
Their Garlic 9 roll is so clever and delicious, it's worth a visit just for that roll alone. Their cucumber tuna roll is out of this world as well!
The location is also nice, after dinner you can stroll down Del Mar and walk off the meal.
Must try! -

Absolutely love 9 Styles! Their Koba Koba roll is the best sushi roll that I have ever had, and I have had a lot. Their sear scallops could almost be considered a desert.
Power combo: Koba Koba, Seared Scallops & Large Saki. -

Found this place off of http://Restaurant.com
I'm disappointed. As a sushi connoisseur, I deem this place's sushi as super weak. We walked in and didn't get seated immediately. It was very awkward standing in the door way. The prices are "normal" but not for what we got. The yellowtail sushi was sooo skinny. SUCH A RIP. The poke sauce on the poke bowl and Hawaiian roll was soo salty, it was overbearing. The wasabi is NOT FRESH, definitely the most disappointing. The ginger is bought from some cheap place, (it's the pink, not the light tan-colored). The (younger) servers were nice, but the older woman was a little rude. I will not be returning here.
SO OVERRATED. -

ever heard of the garlic 9 roll? go get it now! This place always has some creative and delicious rolls on the board, but for a true sushi experience you have to let the chefs create. Tell them what flavors your like and let them work!
To people who are complaining that they didn't get seated or the ginger is pickled rather than fresh I have to say: take a hike you elitist jerks! You had to wait because this place is good and everyone in town knows it! And if you were there for the ginger you're a fool... all it's for is to cleanse your pallet; I think the pink ginger is just fine. You all need to stop crying, make friends with the nice staff, walk in with a fine babe and eat big, go big, and tip big like a boss!!! -

After trying a number of sushi places around south county, this place is the best mix of small-town local feel and terrific fresh sushi.
WE LOVE the garlic 9 roll. (we being my wife and I)
The staff is always friendly, and we go here constantly for our date nights.
It is small in there so see if you can make a reservation if you want to go on a busy night. -

San Clemente, CA
UNBELIEVABLE! I must admit the location had me scared of this place and totally turned off. I'm a fool! All I did was deny myself the best dang Sushi in SC maybe South Orange County.
The sushi is divine! I never once used my soy and wasbi it's totally unnecessary as the sushi chef is skilled and knows what he is doing. Both fresh and creative my meal was to die for. I didn't skip at all. I went for it. I ordered and ordered, even allowing the chef to make choices for me. We even had desert. Who the heck would have thought black bean paste and soy sauce would be good on ice cream. It was heaven. Savory and sweet it blew my mind.
Most mind boggling was the bill. How can food so delectable be affordable? I will be back, again and again. -

If it's lunch time and I am driving through San Clemente, I am definitely stopping at this cool little sushi place for lunch.
This place has the right combination of quality, service and price to earn five stars. The sashimi here is always very fresh and flavorful. I always order their chiriashi offerings and have yet to be disappointed. (Tell them if you don't want something in the chiriashi and they will happily accommodate.)
The service here is excellent. The wait staff is very friendly and engaging, I am always seated right away, my orders are always correct and delivered promptly.
Pricing here is above average, but for sushi that is this good it is a good value.
The crowd here is also very friendly; every time I've been here I end up in a conversation with some random locals on some random topic that makes the experience all the more enjoyable. -

Ugh. Tried 9 Style again and I still can't bring my self to give them more than 3 stars. Tried a few different roles and some albacore and ahi sushi and it was still just okay. Service was pretty good, but it does get packed after about 7 - they take reservations though. Must just not be my taste.

Good authentic sushi. We tried:
Spanish mackerel - good
Uni sushi and the Uni tempera - both really good
Yellow tail belly- super good
Baby octopus - I thought they were going to be slices but they were literally BABY red octopuses! Little baby ones totally formed- size of your thumb! I liked it, freaked fiancé out a bit.
Albacore - it was good but it's those ones where they cook around it, I don't usually like those kinds so much but really it was still good. We tried the famous garlic roll and loved it.
Yellow tail roll- really good
One of the specials for scallop sushi - melt in your mouth good
I'm missing some but it's good FRESH sushi. I know we will become regulars now. I'm so happy to find another GOOD sushi place near our place!! Oh, and the service was impeccable. They do it right :) -

I'm pretty sure I'm known here as "that-one-awkward-girl-who-always-gets-the-garlic- 9-roll-for-take-out"
but it's true.. I am that girl.
It's also a great place to dine in.. quick, friendly, affordable and delish.
Check it out and definitely order the Garlic 9 Roll.. there's a reason everyone raves about it. -

Not sure how this place does so well on Yelp. It is probably my least favorite sushi in town; 1.Sushi Gallery Miki 2. Miyako 3. Nobu
After reading all the glowing Yelp reviews the wife and I gave it another shot and still the same.
Sorry all, I guess just not my style. -

San Clemente, CA
Just tried this place for the first time last week and loved it! Everything was really tasty and came out SUPER FAST - I mean we had all our sushi rolls on our table within 5 minutes of placing our order! The restaurant is pretty small so if you come later you might have trouble finding a place to sit. However, the service was impeccable! The servers just kept circling the restaurant to make sure you had everything you needed, which was awesome. You normally only see that kind of attentiveness in real fancy restaurants :)
Also, they participate on restaurant.com's website! BONUS! If you sign up on restaurant.com's mailing list you periodically get emails for 80% off. With my discount and the http://restaurant.com coupon, I was able to get $25 worth of food and drinks and only spent $2 (normally it would have been $10 without the discount)! You cannot beat that! :) -

I came back for another night out with my gal Luci. This was super great! Our server was so cute we were crushing on her. She had the prettiest smile and bouncy hair. Adorable!
The food was so good. Everything we ordered was so fresh and delicious. It came quick and added up quickly! Our bill was 52 bucks for the two of us no including tip. We got the Garlic 9 roll which was the least favorite, but still yum. We go a dish with salmon and mushrooms and asparagus. I believe it was covered in ponzu sauce, now this was soooo good. Even the spicy tuna roll was perfect! Totally a treat! Can't wait to go there with my hun bun!! :)1 Previous Review: Show all »

Definitely the best sushi rolls I've ever had (in San Clemente anyway.)
9 Style & Sushi Studio in Long Beach are at the top of my list.
I highly recommend the 9 Style garlic roll & the dragon roll. And what's cool about 9style is that you can order half rolls.
The only drawback is that there's always a 20-30 minute wait & assholes tend to cut so be sure to put your name in with one of the waitresses & just keep checking back so no one ganks your spot. -

The rolls were really good, but only downfall is that they dont have many to choose from. But the ones we did get were amazing and they were totally compliant to our "changing" the rolls.

Got done with yoga tonight and was in the mood for some sushi. Called a couple places, and 9 style was still open. The woman on the phone was very polite. She told me that not only were they still open at 9 pm, but they also did to go orders. I arrived to the restaurant and was promptly greeted by a very helpful woman. I put in my order and was told that it would take 25- 30 minutes. No biggie. Good things take time. 15 minutes later, all three of my rolls were ready. They were amazing. Quick service? Polite staff and friendly atmosphere? Incredibly delicious spicy tuna and calamari rolls? I would most certainly say that it deserves all 5 stars. I look forward to being a repeat customer.
