I walked by this store one day, unaware there was yet another chocolate store in town and had to go in to try some. But I had sticker shock when I found out how much the chocolates were. That's kind of funny considering that I'd pay $50 for a pound of La Maison or Michel Cuizel chocolates!  They were OK but I didn't think I'd go back for more in the future, even if they're Swiss chocolates.  I do think they're better than Godiva's and Ghiradelli's but I don't really care much for Godiva chocolates either.  As commerically marketed chocolates go, Guittard are the best bars (they're the chocolate See's Candies uses in their products).

After visiting Ghirardelli and almost vomiting from their new peanut butter milk chocolate I was scared of the chocolate in San Francisco.  Than I visited Recchiuti Confections and tasted their delicious S'mores, I thought OK San Francisco chocolate has redeemed itself.  But than I made the mistake of visiting Chocolate on Castro and tasted their stale old chocolate I was confused, does San Francisco have good chocolate shops or not?

I'm happy to report that it does.  Besides Recchiuti's San Francisco is also lucky enough to have Teuscher Chocolates which brought me back to my chocolate happy place.  I found out that Teuscher chocolates are all Swiss, made in Zurich and flown directly to the store, well the airport than delivered to the store.  The last time I had Swiss chocolate this good was, duh, when I was in Switzerland and Teuscher kind of brought me back to the time I spent in Basle walking the streets eating amazingly melt in your mouth chocolates and flirting with cute boys with accents, good times I tell you, good times.  Unfortunately no cute boys with accents here just those who like to sniff and pet.

Anyways I tried their famous dark chocolate champagne truffle, and three other dark chocolate truffles all were A++ fantastic!  Would definitely eat again and again and again!  I also picked up two chocolate bars to bring home, the dark chocolate of course and the pink pepper, I'm nibbling on the dark chocolate one now haven't touched the pink pepper yet but the dark chocolate one is just as good as the dark chocolate truffles.  Thank you Teuscher's for redeeming the San Francisco chocolate scene in my eyes.

Hell yeah, I'll pay $1.50 for a single chili marzipan the size of three stacked nickels!

I haven't yet decided what, if any, degree of sarcasm I say that with.

when one is willing to chuck out serious cash for their fancy pants chocolates, the customer service and packaging and all that jazz better be there!  I make jokes about it, but really now.  When you're shelling out $2 per tiny little chocolate, 1-they had better be some decadent chocolates, and 2-the service better be top notch.

All that and attractive packaging!

the person I bought a box of 16 truffles ($30), loved them.  She's all about the chocolate and grew up on fine European chocolates.  And after all, we in the Bay Area have ridiculous refined gourmet tastes, and stuff like this ruins you for plebeian delights like Hersey's forever more!!

I am not a chocolate person (gasp!). I like chocolate, but I'm not hormonally obsessed with it. That said, I do appreciate a good piece now and again. Places like Teuscher allow me to pick out one little piece to satisfy me. Of course, I have never been to Teuscher & left with just one piece.
The service at this location is great. I always expected it to be staffed with butlers who would hand me my selection with white gloves. This place so not pretentious like that. The staff is nice and fun. They are totally laid back.
The chocolate is really, really good. They have several boxed selections and a well-edited assortment behind the glass. The champagne truffle is their specialty. It is very good. I like it chilled from the fridge. My absolute fave is the chili marzipan. I totally, totally do not like marzipan, but this is fantastic. The pistachio praline is very, very good. The pistachio and raspberry marzipans are okay. The jasmine truffle is all right, but my partner swears by them. The dark ganache is very buttery tasting. The guy behind the counter gave me one to try. I loved it. The zebra, with it's 3 stripes, is very, very good. The Bailey's truffle was wonderful. It was really smooth and melted perfectly into my mouth without getting all over my hands. It's like M&Ms, but a hundred times more expensive.
The shop location is perfect for when I have to do theater in SF. Hours dealing with actors requires a reward and Teuscher is on the way to the Montgomery BART station.

Refine chocolate perfection. That is why you have to pay the price.

This is what good quality chocolate is all about. Even their nuts selection are cut into a size blends into the chocolate and a well thought out piece of treasure.

Sometimes you just need to treat ourselves, you worked hard of it! ;)

Teuscher has always been a connoisseur's choice of Swiss chocolate. The chocolate here is no exception. Having grew up in (the German area of) Switzerland, it was a huge score for me to stumble on this on my recent business trip to San Francisco, as it was just down the block from my hotel.

Unfortunately, it is expensive. I understand the concept of luxury goods and their price points, as well as the weak dollar. But they've overdone it here in my humble opinion. If you are lucky enough to be in Switzerland, the Teuscher brand actually isn't as strong, because you'll find phenomenal chocolatiers and confectionaries in most major towns you might visit. So if you find yourself there, seek out any given shop and get more bang for your buck for equally excellent treats.

Still, it's a taste of home for me and I splurged. :-)

Finite yet Sweet Tendencies

I'm writing this, between bites of a smooth milk chocolate truffle from Astor Chocolate ( http://www.astorchocol... ) brought straight in from Vegas.

Chocolate has always been somewhat of an elusive shift of preferential treatments ever since I was growing up in a traditional Japanese home where sweets were unheard of.  My occasional swipes at experiencing these delights were rather sporadic, at school and at the mercy of sympathizing friends.

Then came adulthood, where several holidays would find me in receipt of strange shaped boxes holding different brands of chocolates:  See's, Scharffenberger, Godiva, just to name a generic few.  My favorites, were the multi-textured yet well balanced mixes of nuts, caramel and chocolate.

Along with age, like a fine wine, come discerning tastes as well as the astute provider of fine chocolates or someone who is quite eager in making an impression.  This would have been in the cutie bow tied secrets by La Maison.

I must have been the finicky recipient of these embellishments, because most of the time, they went uneaten.  The two boxes of chocolate dipped strawberries accidentally rot because I forgot about them at my desk years ago.

Teuscher has since diminished my fears in regards to whatever comes tied with such sweet connotations and lurid objectives because nowadays, rather than worry about consumption, it is within the tinier details of these impeccable creations of sweet nothingness that brings me closer to the window displays.

Their vivid and lavish window displays is truly the main reason why I am drawn closer here.  Fine confections done with attention to detail.  You are not just consuming chocolate.  You are consuming art done in the form of chocolate as a medium.  My personal favorite is the dark chocolate Champagne truffles and white truffle.  In addition, sometimes I'll opt for something more exotic to my taste buds, such as the Jasmine Tea or the Kirsch.

Regardless, every jaunt past their colorful shop causes me to stray from my path and press close against their window display.

Hmmm.  Easter.

My friend Sunee first introduced me to Teuscher's Champagne Truffles with stories on how these chocolates were famous among celebrities. Celebrities (usually) have good taste, so I stole a truffle from her, bit into the shell of one sugar dusted dark chocolate covered morsel of creamy champagne-y fantasticalness, and got hooked for life.

A few weeks ago, I bought a little green dozen truffle baggy, ate them ALL in one setting, and the twelfth truffle was as delectable as the first.  Diminishing marginal utility? None whatsoever.

The champagne truffle are like little drops of heaven...I am so hooked on them.  I tried their other truffles, but the champagne truffles are the best. The downside is that they are very expensive over $2 per piece...but worth it...they use Don Perignon.

Heehee, chocolate yummy, me likey.

Boohoo, chocolate pricey, me sad.

Sooooooooo I'll take two jasmines and two raspberries. And I"ll smuggle them home to Seattle where I'll share them in secret with my mom who was gracious and generous enough to fly my ass down to San Francisco to begin with.

The raspberry is nice and not too tart. But the jasmine ... Ooooooooh the jasmine. You know I've never said my name is such a sexual way before, not even in jest.

And a separate 5 star for my co-worker Bruno, who suggested I go here (and even gave me money to pick him up a bag of the mini champagne truffles, which he gave me one and yes it was a delicious, melty morsel of heaven).

I don't care for these chocolates.  I think they taste a little grainy.  I bought about 10 pieces and I felt the same way about all of them.  Also some of them did taste stale.  The champagne truffle is good, but wasn't so good that I crave for another one.

I think the chocolates from Recchiuti in the Ferry Bldg are a lost better.  Hell, I would even prefer See's Candies which is probably less than half the price!!

For my 25th birthday, my awesome friends took me on a chocolate scavenger hunt. This involved driving me from location to location, with different friends meeting me at each new chocolate stop. We got sidetracked by a flat tire, but by the end of the day, I had sampled 9 of 12 chocolate shops.

Of the nine, Teuscher was my favorite. The Champagne Truffles are famous - Oprah's fav, or so I hear. I selected four pieces, which they packaged in a paper mache penguin (or pingwyn, as Bret and Jermaine of Flight of the Conchords would say), which I still keep on my mantle.

Anyway, back to the chocolate. The Champagne Truffle was definitely decadent, but I knew it would be. Even the plain milk chocolate was fantastic. I had selected the one shaped like a VDub Beetle. But my absolute favorite was the Milk Buttercrunch, which makes it my most favorite of all chocolates, anywhere. Even more so than Lindt, Godiva, Richart, La Maison du Chocolat, etc. It just melts in your mouth and dances on your tongue.

i am a lady of many mysteries.

one mystery is how i am lady, and how i don't like chocolate.

another mystery is how i don't like chocolate, but i do like chocolate milk.

and still one more, is how, through what magic, teuscher makes chocolates that i absolutely adore? but that's not so much a mystery about me as it's a mystery about teuscher.

Decadent, melt-in-your-mouth champagne truffles (Teuscher's signature confection?).  I'm off to Teuscher now to pick up some of these  special chocolates to give as holiday gifts.  I'll probably keep some for myself as well.

I bought some chocolate here on December 21, 2007, some time around noon. One of the people working behind the counter was a smashingly pretty and cute woman with a lovely soft voice and graceful hands. Christ, I wanted to tell her just how perfect she was. Henceforth I shall buy my chocolate from this Teuscher shop just to see her.

I'm sorry that my review says nothing about the quality of Teuscher chocolate. But all chocolate in the world is trifling and dull compared to the sublime experience of seeing this perfect woman.

I got cold feet when I thought about shopping at Union Square. A bag of Teuscher's Chocolate helped me through the day. It made me forgot about the agonies of driving and parking, waiting in line, and changing and fitting. It kept me going; it kept me strong...

Teuscher Chocolate, the ultimate shopping companion.

One you've eaten Teuscher it's hard to go back to Godiva, or gulp! - Sees. This cute shop is tucked away in Union Square.  I paid $2.25 for the champagne truffle.  Can't believe I paid that but it was the best ever. Literally melts in your mouth.  Must tell husband about this place so he will make it a POINT to come here and get my chocolate.

I didn't know what to quite think of Teuscher with their tacky plastic flowers  window display.  Don't judge a book by its cover right?   So I headed inside the itty bitty store and, to my delight, discovered the champagne truffles.  Not being a big fan of chocolate in general (especially Hershey's plastic tasting  "chocolate") I truly enjoyed the sweets here!  Be sure to try out their rich hot cocoa but try and make it during the morning since they make their batch in the morning and once they run out they don't make anymore to sell for the day.  Enjoy!

When I lived in NY I discovered their Champagne Truffles and I've been addicted ever since.

I don't allow myself to pass this place by because I know I can't resist them.

I also like Godiva's but these are better, IMO.

They're just so creamy and rich and........

I gotta get some NOW.

Remember Bryan Adams song Heaven?

Teuscher you're all that I want
When you're lyin' here in my arms
I'm findin' it hard to believe
I'm in heaven
And chocolate is all that I need
And I found it there in your Store
It isn't too hard to see
I'm in heaven

Oh - once in your life you find something
That will turn your world around
Bring you up when you're feelin' down

Ya - nothin' could change what you mean to me
Oh there's lots that I could say
But I'm just gonna put you in my mouth
Cause our love will light the way

Teuscher you're all that I want
When you're lyin' here in my arms
I'm findin' it hard to believe
I'm in heaven
And chocolate is all that I need
And I found it there in your Store
It isn't too hard to see
I'm in heaven

The chocolate here tastes as good as it looks. During Easter they had bunnies which came with different colored ribbons tied around their necks sitting in baskets. On a normal basis they have cute puppies, cats, animal shapes, butterflies, etc. The sales lady was so nice. She gave really good recommendations and was not pushy. She gave my friend and I samples because she was in a good mood that day. She was very friendly and was able to answer all the questions we had about their chocolates.

I was initially drawn in by the cool display in the window. They change the display as the seasons change. Sometimes I'll walk by just to see the display. It's hard to resist entering just to get a glance of all the sweets laid out behind the display case. They are known for their champagne truffles. This is on my list of things to try. But I'll try any chocolate confection at this place because all the chocolates look good.

This is such a cute chocolate shop in Union Square.
Box filled with milk and dark champagne truffles will make anyone smile.
I personally stay away from other varieties, after some of the nut varieties I had tasted stale. (Yes, nuts do stale, including peanuts, almonds, hazelnuts)
I like their new location in Stanford Shopping Mall better.

I happened to wander by this little shop during a stroll around Union Square from my hotel one evening and did a Hollywood-esque double take. As in, Stopped Dead In My Tracks, Turned Around, Went Inside.

Was greeted by a friendly but not-overly-pushy saleswoman who proceeded to tick off all her favorites (does she really love them all?). She somehow charmed me into buying five rich pieces. I was a bit stunned that they cost me $13, but as I devoured them over the next couple of days, I wasn't disappointed.

My favorites from the bundle I chose were the classic champagne truffles and the Jasmine truffle. I'm sitting here drinking a cup of Jasmine green tea at the moment, and I can vouch for the utter fresh Jasmine-ness of that chocolate. It may sound like an unlikely combination, but trust me, it works.

If you're a packaging fiend as I am, make sure you tell the salesperson to wrap your chocolates for later savoring: You'll be presented the most exquisite little box, matte light pink cardboard, tied with a golden ribbon. Great place for a gift if you're willing to spend a bit....or, better yet, a treat for yourself.

I love dark chocolate...and by that I mean 99% dark! I love it soo much that its part of my breakfast routine :-)

So a co-worker found out what a chocolate sch-nob I am and suggested we go to Teuscher's one day after lunch-she knew of their 99% dark chocolate bar. I was in for a treat! So after a minute of entering the brightly decorated shop, there I was, light-headed and giddy with the smells and sight of the fanciful selection, a BIG grin on my face! It also happened to be a birthday of a friend of mine, so it was great to have an excuse to buy a selection, and include a few for myself(because being a gemini I can't always make up my mind!).

And a warning to you: the champagne dark chocolate truffles are tres dangereux!

Some may consider it to be on the pricier side, but considering how decadent these little gems are, I say love is cheap!

This is IT!  I could remember being at this very chocolate boutique close to 10 years ago... I remember who I was with, what I was wearing & most importantly what I was tasting and thinking... OH MY GAWWWWWD!!!  as I bit into their signature Champagne truffle (made with Dom Perignon) not expecting anything too special, and it was serious heaven on earth.  The three of us were completely at a loss for words... standing on the middle of the sidewalk.

To this day, I still have the same above experience each time I bite into one... if you haven't tried this, I highly urge you to do so. It's the most romantic thing you'll ever taste.

Don't you hate it when you've consumed alot of calories for something that didn't even taste that good and you wish you hadn't.  Well, you'll have no such regret if you stick to TeUscher Dark Chocolate Champagne Truffles.  ohhhhhh it's so soooooooooo so so so sooooooooooooooo so good.

I also like the little candy animals for cake decoration.  All my bday cakes when I was little had these animals on them.  Don't eat them though because its too cute.  If you eat them, you may be heartless.

This place is a fat ass waiting to happen.  We stopped by the other day so that I could decide for myself if Teuscher really is all that.  It is.   Well, the chocolate is anyway.  The staff there is surprisingly unenthusiastic considering they are SURROUNDED BY MOUTH-WATERING CHOCOLATE ALL DAY LONG.  The decor in there is like a Laura Ashley catalog that went terribly wrong and then exploded.

We got and loved:
Buttercrunch Truffle
Dark Truffle (my personal fave)
Champagne Truffle

$2 a piece for chocolate is pricey for sures, but how much chocolate do we really want to be eating anyway?  If it weren't for the exorbitant price, I'd have a piece of Teuscher truffle in my mouth at all times.  And then I'd have to buy all new pants, which would cost me a lot of money.  So when you think about it, $2 a piece now is going to save you a lot of wardrobe money in the long run.  Wow, I will say anything to defend this chocolate.  I'm mental.

My husband and I had an agreement that we would not be purchasing anything for each other for V-Day, "We're just going out to dinner, ok?", I said.  "Ok", he said.
V-Day rolls around and I notice a suspicious withdrawal from husband's savings/weekly allowance account, at a Fillmore Street location....Hmmmm......Oh NO! I think he went to Bittersweet! I think he picked me up some of my favorite chocolates, Vosages! Oh no! He broke the agreement! Now I have to break the agreement too! I head over to Teuscher's on Sutter. My sister had said great things about them, and this would be the perfect opportunity/excuse for me to find out!

The shop itself is small, and crazily decorated, as mentioned in other reviews. It's like a JoAnn's Fabric store threw up in there: lots of fabric flowers, ribbons, craftiness, etc. The employees were very helpful and attentive. I ended up buying champagne truffles and chewy caramels. They put them all in a cute red box with ribbons with hearts on them. Gave them to husband. He liked! We both liked! I think the champagne truffles are better than the ones at Recchiuti's! Oh and I was right! Husband did get me TWO bars of my favorite Vosages chocolates! Hands off! All mine!

Simply put, what a disappointment!

I'm a chocolate-phile.  I have spent years training my taste buds with Sharffen Berger, Joseph Schmidt, Godiva, Valhrona, and many others...so I was very excited to try this brand, since it was new to me.  The shop is cluttered, has waaaay too many pre-packaged kitchy-not-cute items, and the women behind the counter didn't really seem interested in helping us (one of them was on the phone chatting casually with a friend).

I inquired as to their pricing:  over $60/lb!!!  I gulped.  That's rather expensive!  So, given that price range, I figured these better be reeeeally good chocolates.  My partner and I selected three chocolates to try and share, just to give ourselves a sample.  Those three TINY (and I mean miniscule!) chocolates ran us $5.50!!

So we sat down to try them:  first, the most basic, the chocolate I always get to measure a brand's worth:  dark chocolate filled with dark chocolate ganache.  I was surprised to find a really mediocre, starchy texture with a bland flavor.  If I felt more qualified to make such a judgement, I'd guess this chocolate wasn't particularly fresh!

Then the next one:  chocolate with sea salt.  Again, bland and starchy, and the sea salt was apparently only on top as a garnish...but had come off in the bag they'd tossed the chocolate into!  If they're going to have such a delicate bonbon, they should have an appropriately delicate packaging system to ensure that the customer who spent $5.50 on three microscopic chocolates gets their full money's worth!

And finally, Dark chocolate with meyer lemon filling.  The filling was a huge let-down:  tart and overly sweet at the same time, tasted like a lemon life-saver!!  THAT'S downright SAD!!  Even Godiva does it much better!

This place is like so many other fussy chocolatiers popping up these days:  over-priced, over-rated, and downright mediocre.  Just because you CAN charge that much for poor-quality chocolate doesn't mean you should.  And just because something is expensive, doesn't mean it's good (Harry and David's is another good example of this).

This place is a clip joint.  I am pretty sure the only reason they continue to get business is because they are in the financial district, and get orders to send gift baskets to corporate types nearby because it's convenient, not because they're good.  Any place that tries so hard to be a status symbol should be a little suspect, and in this case, it turns out they just don't pass muster.

If you want chocolates that are better than this, swallow your pride, take yourself to Macy's Cellar, and go to the Godiva counter.  You'll get better quality chocolate bonbons and truffles for a much more reasonable price!

I am not a chocoholic. I am surrounded by chocoholics at work and at home. Sure I'll eat a piece or 2 from time to time but I don't have to have it if it's sitting within 30 feet of me. Now, that said, I do have a passion for the Champagne truffles from Teuscher. They're bon bons of heaven!

Everytime I give a box as a gift people just fall all over themselves  with how good it was. And they get the impression that I really do love them. Heh heh.

Just don't judge a chocolate by the inside of the store. It's way ghettofabulous in there. Like every holiday rolled up into one and then covered in gold glitter and fake flowers. But, hey, the chocolates are good.

In our quest for wedding favors we naturally stopped by here. In an ideal world where money isn't an issue, I would've most definitiely had the chocolates from here as favors. Alas, it is not ideal and I am not about to break the bank over chocolates (although excellent ones!). The individual boxes are amusing. They are seasonal and sometimes wacky and not free. I believe they ranged from $5 to $9 extra. They do have the less wacky simpler box but at $6.50 for 2 pieces it was too much for this middle class girl.

It's $66/lb of chocolate.

For a pound of chocolate here, you could buy

1/4oz of gold
5 oz of silver.

or my recommendation:

3.5 lbs of joseph schmidt.

chocolates were good, nothing special
