Good stuff!Total hole in the wall, I think its hilarous that they have 3 different menus for the different clientele! And the presentation of the food and preparation for all three of them are different as well! :D
The GARLIC sauce definitely awesome.. soo much fresh garlic and they bring it out piping hot! -
Review from Jazi H.
If I was rating 888 solely on their food, I'd give them 5 stars. Their Kung Pao Chicken and egg rolls are delicious and they have the best brown sauce. They also offer great, yummy, diet friendly options.
HOWEVER...dun, dun duuuun! I have to agree with other Yelpers that have pointed this out already...their customer service is FATAL. I was a loyal and regular customer until they did me wrong. I brought them good business too, ordering at least 15 dishes for delivery (they were my #1 choice for catering meetings). I thought it was so convenient that they offered delivery until the day they not only arrived late but also completely brought me the WRONG order, even after I called to confirm they had received my online order.
I was so disappointed, not to mention stressed out since I had to figure out what to do at the last minute. I ended up having to re-order and wait an hour until we all got our food and there was no discount or apologies offered, even after I spoke to the "manager". Needless to say, they broke my heart and I've been boycotting them ever since.Listed in: Restaurants in Houston

ABSOLUTELY THE WORST CUSTOMER SERVICE i HAVE EVER EXPERIENCED THAT REQUIRES THIS BUSINESS TO BE SHUT DOWN IMMEDIATELY!!!!!!!!!
Worst customer service I have ever received in my 41 years on this planet. I called this restaurant the first time at 9:45-9:50pm for a deliver and was told to hold. I was then told by a person I assumed was the manager on duty (I was told that the actual managers left by 5PM everyday and no type of manager was ever on duty after that) that told me that they didn't deliver after 10pm because, "They didn't want to be there at the restaurant after 11pm at night. No shit!
She told me that they didn't have an evening manager and the owners operated this business out of their house and didn't care what customers thought of their policies - NO SHIT!
I was stunned when I heard this and expressed my feelings to this person and she said "tough". Can you believe this?!
Their menu says nothing about stopping delivery at 10 or 9:45 PM. In fact their menu says they are opened until 11pm at night. She told me she knew that the menu said this but it wasn't their policy and could care less that a customer was upset by it!
I am completely and totally stunned by this and will continue to spread this message to whomever I can and hope you do to......1 Previous Review: Show all »

So I have been a customer since they opened...always letting my friends/family know about this place. I love how they deliver and the food is always HOT! I ordered food for delivery the other day, still not eating Chinese since then! We ordered 2 meals and a large wonton. Delivery was fast not the usual 45 minute wait. While splitting the wonton with my husband I decided to eat some of my pepper steak which is my absolute favorite! I started to take a bite and moved some of the peppers around to get some meat when I saw it floating there in my food....a dead fly! This has never happened before to me, I was disgusted and completely lost my appetite. My husband called to let them know and all they could say was they are sorry and if I wanted to have another ordered delivered! Ughhhh no I was grossed out of course I didn't want any more food, so then they could only offer me a credit of $9.95!! I don't see myself eating there for a while or ever...which breaks my heart because I really liked their food, I know I shouldn't freak out it can happen to anyone, but really how do you expect me to just pick up and keep eating there without any type of reservation about what to expect in my food!
Before this whole fly ordeal, I really like the wonton soup it has an amazing broth flavor and the meat in the wonton is always plentiful. The general tso is cooked to perfection and the sticky rice is always a good consistency never mushy! The beloved pepper steak is always delicious with a lots of sauce and the onions and peppers are cooked not raw which is a plus for me!
The location is good, parking can be tight especially on Thursday nights. The staff is nice I have never encountered a rude waiter/waitress. Bathrooms are clean.
I am still conflicted if I should give them another shot?? -

I'm very satisfied with my food. Service was very good and nice.
Very impressed as a Chinese myself. Some dishes might be too spicy for Americans but if you are a spicy food lover, this is your spot! -

Great Sichuan food and yes I've had Sichuan in North China. $8-10/plate which is a deal for the quality.
If you don't have an Asian friend who can read the Chinese version of the menu, then just start with 'Mopo Tofu' & 'double cooked pork' & spicy chicken and some viggies--Bok Choy. There are many other dishes that are equally as good but this should get you started safely. -
Review from Feng E.
Was it because my husband sat down first and they gave us the menu as well as the food for Americans? Whatever it was, the food I had in this place was no Sichuan food.
I ordered the Boiled fish in hot sauce (like a standard in all Sichuan restaurants) and the sauce was: a. not spicy enough; b. too sweet; c. not enough to even cover all the fish). I also ordered another dish recommended on the Chinese website and it was ok, edible but nothing to be blown away.
Sadly I thought, if this was as good as Sichuan food gets in Houston, Houston has no hopes then. However, I tried out Mala Sichuan Bistro last night and was very pleased. So I guess I just need to explore more. -

When I walk into a Chinese place where the waitstaff is entirely Chinese, and a good half the customers are as well, I take that as a good sign. However, it also makes me wonder if there aren't more "Chinese" dishes that would be fun to try that isn't on the menu that I just don't know about because I don't speak the language, so I get the old standby's like General Tsao, Sesame Seed Chicken, Beef and Brocoli, Meat Fried Rice, etc.
The stuff we got was on the "traditional Americanized Chinese Food" menu, and it tasted great, veggies were fresh, meat wasn't bathed in grease, etc etc. So I would recommend this place hands down for it's "traditional" menu. But I am sure if they do well with that stuff their "non-traditional american" menu must be pretty good. I just need to find someone to go with me who will guide me through it.
Worth checking out for some of the better Chinese I have had in Houston. -
Review from Chuck M.
I ordered some late night food to go (as this was the latest open Chinese restaurant I could find on Yelp) and I was not disappointed. A large, hot portion of Kung Pao chicken was ready for me within five or ten minutes. I also got egg rolls, which were good, and some hot and sour soup, which was good but not great. Everything was still hot when I got home which I always like. Down sides are that they didn't include any hot mustard for the egg rolls, and they charge you for additional sauces over what they normally include in the bag (soy sauce, hot oil, cihli sauce.) Also, the only option of rice was white rice - brown and fried not on the menu. Still, it was a very enjoyable late night meal, and I'm sure I'll be back. I'll probably just eat in next time though and that way not have to worry about paying extra for sauce.

Been here for lunch many times - great lunch special at a great price. I've found that I like the non-fried chicken dishes best, the fried chicken dishes (i.e. orange chicken, sesame chicken) tend to have a little more breading than I like.
Hot and sour soup and chicken fried rices are both great choices. -

I usually cook dinner more often then not. But when I'm sick in bed with a cold I know I'm not touching the kitchen. Having just moved into an apartment near by we had received one of their menus in our mail, we decided to try out their delivery. Ever since recently falling in love with yelp I'm always checking a restaurants reviews before ordering. I ordered orange chicken and hot and sour soup. Both were very good and fresh although i wished the chicken was just the chicken and broccoli and not all that other stuff. My boyfriend ordered the shrimp lo mien and it was very delicious as well. We will definitely order again next time we need fast delivery that's fresh.

First thing you should know when it comes to food, I could not care less about ambience.
But this place has some of the most authentic Hunan food in Houston! If you are Chinese, just speak it and have them bring you the 'secret' Chinese menu. Everyone else gets the 'American' menu. They have some of the best 'fu qi fei pian' (pinyin) that I've ever had along with a slamming Ma Po Tofu and Yu Xiang Qie Zi.
For me the meal was more satifying than any restaurant in Chinatown on Bellaire!
Fantastic authentic Chinese food despite the location and strangely high number of hispanic customers. I thought I was eating in a tacqueria or something! lol. -

Houston, TX
My father recommended this place and we went for lunch on a Sunday late lunch (after 2pm). It still had a good size crowd in there. The wonton soup was very yummy - the broth had some heft to it and I suspect the wontons and steamed dumplings are made on premise - I could have just eaten the dumplings for lunch. The jumbo shrimp in mango garlic sauce was good. My husband cleaned his plate.
Overall, pretty good. I'm looking forward to going back and trying some more items.
Parking is very limited - carpool if you can. -

This place has really good, clean Chinese food in general. They have a more Chinese American menu and they have a traditional Chinese menu.
-Mango Chicken and Garlic Sauce was different but still good
-Fried seafood platter with fried rice was simple and good.
-Sizzling beef dish was absolutely delicious!!!
This place deserves a 4 star for the Chinese American dishes because I do not like Chinese American food. However, the Chinese sizzling beef dish is a 5 stars! -
Review from Ellen C.
I stopped by here with a few friends on an early Friday night (it's a favorite of theirs). Good thing we arrived as early as we did (a little after 6 p.m.) because I observed 888 go from a moderate-sized crowd to full capacity, with dozens of people braving the wait for tables.
The simple bok choy dish is quite lovely - nicely sauteed firm stalks of roughly chopped bok choy in a light garlic sauce. It's simple, but wonderfully executed. My friend sweetly ordered chow mai fun, but asked the meat be substituted with tofu. They surely didn't skimp on the tofu - nice tasty fried slices of soy delight. It was also similarly delicious and even the hardcore "OMG, I hate vegan food!" guys at the table remarked with much shock that "it's not too bad!" If you're vegan, be sure to clarify sans egg as well (which we had neglected to do, so my poor friend and I labored over meticulously extracting the tiny egg bits from every bite I took, hah!).
The service was very brisk, but not curt or rude. There was a good portion of actual Chinese people dining here (I heard a few raves about the food), yammering away in Mandarin - so if that's any indication of authenticity or decent food quality - there ya go.
There aren't too many default vegetarian options, but they were totally cool with accommodating our requests, so just bear that in mind. -

I went here for lunch with some coworkers for Chinese New Year 2011. While I am Asian however I am not Chinese. So I let my Chinese workers ordered 15 authentic Chinese dishes. The common theme among the 15 dishes is summerized in two words.
Too spicy.
btw. no parking either, you might have to park across the street or on the street since the parking lot is small. -

This is by far one of the most authentic Chinese restaurants that you are going to get in Houston outside of Chinatown. They have two menus, an Americanized menu and a Chinese menu. I went with my Chinese friend and ordered off the Chinese menu. It is as authentic as you can get for Sichuan food. I ordered the Mapo Dofu and it was delicious! It has that same "numbing" spiciness that you see in a lot of Chinese food.
This is also one of the restaurants that don't mess around when they say a dish is spicy. When you order a spicy dish here, be prepared to sweat. It is awesome. The waiter we had was very fast and filled up water whenever I was borderline getting low. Be sure to check this one out. -

I grew up in Houston but only found this restaurant last year. It upsets me knowing what I missed all these years. They have three menus; one catering to Chinese, one for Americans and one for their Indian customers. I usually order off the Chinese menu. The shredded chicken with Thai chili and cilantro is probably my favorite dish anywhere! Houston has a lot of depth when it comes to Chinese food, due to it's large Chinese population. This place is one of my favorites, probably due to this dish. If you're in Houston and like spicy, it's worth the drive believe me! You'll love it!!!

This place is an unassuming joint located at the corner of BFE Road and Boonies blvd. Its a shame that this place is so far away because it is easily one of the best Szechuan restaurants in Houston. I would eat here weekly if it were not so far away.
Be sure to bring someone that knows how to order real Chinese food. Or ask the servers for some authentic recommendations. Just be ready to sweat!! bring a towel. This place is legit.
Although I am sure their fried rice and general tso's chicken is ok, do not succumb to cliche ordering. Make sure you try the real Chinese food here. The parking situation here kind of blows and its not exactly in the safest part of town. You may have to secretly park across the street, so try to blend in so you don't get towed.
If you are looking for an authentic chinese food experience, and are not afraid to sweat and hurt a little the next day, then definitely give this place a try. They have some solid, mouth numbing Szechuan food that is sure to have you coming back. -
Review from Angela C.
After hearing rave reviews, I finally hit up 888 (Da Sichuan) last night and I can happily declare it is my new favorite Sichuan restaurant in Houston! For non-food related tips... First, parking is limited, so you just have to get lucky or secretly park across the street and hope you don't get towed. Second, the owner was very nice and had a smile on his face the whole time which made me feel all warm inside, like I was visiting a long lost uncle. They have a new menu which is in both Chinese and English.
I trusted my friends to order since they have eaten every dish on the menu. This is what we came out with (pardon my crappy pin yin):
- Eggplant in a sweet and sour sauce (rue xiang chieh dz) - *almost* as good as my mom's (which is saying a lot). They serve this in a clay pot and it is boiling hot. Perfect dish to eat with rice.
- Boiled oil beef (swei dsoo nio) - notoriously numbingly spicy dish that I love. True to form, this stuff is not for wimps. The hubby was dripping sweat from the heat.
- Intestines/fish fillets/vegetables in a clay pot - get over it, intestines are delicious.
- Fried string beans (gan bien sz ji do) - well fried and good flavor.
Total for 4 people, 4 delicious dishes, and drinks = $52, pretty cheap if you ask me. I'm never in this area, but I would make the trip just to come eat at 888.Listed in: Recommended in Houston, Authentic Chinese Food

Do not judge a book by its cover....the food is pretty authentic for the area
The chinese name of this restaurant is Big Schezuan
We got the:
Green beans (4/5)
Garlic sauce eggplant in clay pot (4/5)
The fermented bean fish (4/5)
Potato and jalapeno slices (4/5)
Mashed garlic pork (5/5)
Okay so the reason for 3/5 stars is because every dish was EXTREMELY oily. I mean, I'm down for grease, but it was a little excessive. And we saw a cockroach on the wall when we left. But honestly, I wouldn't doubt that every restaurant in Houston chinatown has cockroaches (authentic...!!!) -

I liked it. I didn't LOVE it.
I got the mango chicken with garlic sauce and I guess it was a bad idea to put something like that on the menu because I wasn't too crazy about the combination of flavors.
The General Tso was yummy, I'll give them that :)
I like how this place is open later on the weekends, but seriously! Parents! Don't be out with young children at 11:30 and don't let them run around screaming their little heads off! I seem to have this experience every time I go!Listed in: Exotic Eats

Went to dinner here for the first time tonight (Halloween!) and ordered three dishes: beef with scallions, sezchuan tofu (basically ma po tofu), and shredded pork with bamboo shoots. I must say, for a place not in the southwest area of town, their food was pretty authentic and it was as if I was in a Chinese restaurant in bellaire. Who knew there was little gem on the southside in gulfgate? I sure didn't but now I definitely will be using this place to get my quick and close Chinese food fix. As other reviewers have pointed out, it's always a good sign to see chinese people eating in a chinese restaurant. Yay!

at a farewell dinner saying goodbye to a friend from the dinner crew, we were here with a sampling of 8 different dishes. chicken, seafood, beef all were represented to take a field trip across our taste-buds and to the final destinations of my belly....
it was a wondrous trip.... everything i had that night was good... like better than that average corner store carryout Chinese you're probably used to.... but i'll let you decide... worth a stop thru. -

This is a great place! I love their food. It's very authentic.
At first though, it may look a bit different, and the name "888" doesn't exactly scream out "Chinese Food" so to speak. The waiter was nice and eager to serve us, the food came under a reasonable time, tasty and delicious. I would definitely recommend this place.
Its very close to my home, close to UH, however parking can get packed in the weekends to watch out. Other than that, great place to dine! -
Review from Edgar V.
To celebrate MLK Day, I was "free at last" to range a little farther for lunch since the office didn't have its hold on me today. I had a hankering for dumplings, consulted Yelp for ideas, and debated whether to stay ITL or go to New Chinatown.
In the end, stayed technically ITL by going to 888, which is in the revivified Gulgate area. Got there around 1 PM and the place was packed but had to wait only a minute for a table to be cleaned. Kudos to Alan S for his review and the detail on the lunchtime tsunami.
The building looks like a former Pizza Hut and the interior has much of the same booth/table decor but updated. The Dickinson location is far prettier, though. Plenty of staff: a mix of Latin and Chinese staff kept every table happy and served promptly. The customer base was a gorgeous mosaic of diversity, too. (Props to David Dinkins for the imagery.)
Had the Chicken Dumplings in Hot Sauce ($4.75, 8 pieces) and a small bowl of wonton soup ($1.50) to start. The soup was really good with a hearty broth, green scallions, and 3 plump fresh pork dumplings in it. A large bowl would have been a filling meal by itself.
The dumplings were a pretty presentation in their own bowl; coupled with a second plate, this was a touch of class so I didn't have to eat out of the serving bowl even when alone. The soy-based hot sauce wasn't hot in the least but I remedied it with some hot chili oil from the table condiments. Delicious, tasty, and satisfying on a cool winter day.
In sum, the dumplings and soup made for a delightful lunch on a beautiful national holiday. 3.5 stars. The Yelp plaque on the wall was pretty neat to see, too.Listed in: OCD: Obsessive Chinese Dining

Review from Farrah A.
I looooove 888 (pronounced, "triple eight"). My first visit was after treating my friend for his bday lunch (I forgot my wallet at the office--whoops! Got him later for dinner and that cost me a good hundred smackaroos!)
Apparently, the Houston Chronicle featured the restaurant years ago as one of H-Town's hidden gem. Hidden? Not so much. It's in the Gulf Gate area. But the exterior and surrounding area wouldn't coax any regular foodie like myself to venture in--but thank goodness I did!
The Chinese restaurant serves incredibly fresh food. So fresh, I spotted the owner dump over a crate of fresh green beans and began snipping and snapping away.
The meat (beef, chicken and fish) is all so incredibly soft--no chewy crap you experience at other places.
I HIGHLY recommend you try the spicy chicken dumplings. THE BEST I've had anywhere ... ANYWHERE.
The general tso's chicken, beef and broccoli, seafood soup, pineapple and mango chicken are all great dishes, and you can opt to have brown rice which is a huge plus.
Anyone who I have ever brought here or pointed in 888's direction has loved it.
The only reason I give 888 a 3-star rating is because of the three times that I've ordered delivery, food had been missing, substituted for something else, requested sauces not in the bag ... just purely frustrating when you're craving their amazing food! My suggestion? Eat in.Listed in: Houston - Ethnic Eats

This place is best Szechuan food i've ever had in america, hands down.

I haven't yet found a favorite entree at 888, however I plan to come back and keep sampling until I find it.
Here are my thoughts on a few things.
Moo Goo Gi Pan - 3/5 Vegetables where fresh and crisp, the sauce was a little more brothy than I prefer. I like the garlic that is included. Hot Wok in Clear Lake is my favorite for this entree.
Wonton Soup 3/5 - Had an A-OK flavor. Kim Son in EADO is my favorite place for Wonton soup.
Pork Dumplings 2/5 - The dumpling are more doughy than I prefer.
Chicken Fried Rice (2.5/5) - This entree includes white meat chicken, white onion, green onion, soy sauce, and scrambled eggs. (see Photo). The soy sauce used to prepare this entree was applied too heavy handed for my preference, also the rice was just okay.
Hot Sauce 3/5 - I prefer hot chili oil, rather than the hot sauce they provide table side.
Other Things to Know
- They have two menus. The regular menu and the Chinese menu. The items listed above are off the regular menu. I haven't tried anything off the other menu yet.
- When the restaurant gets full it can get very loud inside.
- Parking can be an issue when the restaurant get full.
- The last time I was there, someone's truck got broken into in the parking lot
- No Asian Style Spare Ribs -

Not to shabby for a lunch special but I've had better. I went with the orange beef, fried rice, hot and sour soup lunch combo. The major up side to this was that with tax and tip you are still looking at getting out for $10 or less. The food was good, the service good, overall I am a fan... but I wouldn't go special unless I was in the area and in the mood for Chinese.
Both people I went with enjoyed it. One felt the same way I did, the other probably would have given the place 5 stars. I would defiantly give the place another go. Word of advice, get there at 1130-1200 and get a table no problem. Get there between 12-1 and you will stand around waiting for a table.
They have a 5 star Yelp plaque on the wall... that amused me. -

I order from 888 at least once a month. I love the Hunan Chicken and the Garlic pork. The food is good in general, but they aren't always consistent with flavors. Sometimes I'll get a meal that's too salty, too oily, or not as many vegetables as the time before. This time, my chicken tastes like fish. I know they do a lot of seafood, but I'm not enjoying the taste in my chicken.

Awesome food. The mapo tofu is fantastic, the spice really hits you after a few bites. It seems mild at first, but then after a while you're sweating, and your nose is running. Fantastic.
The dried chili fish is fantastic. It comes in a bowl, and underneath the fish you'll find a set of delicious vegetables. The fish was cooked excellently and had a nice mild flavor, that went very well with the spice.
We also had a dish of squid and mushrooms, the squid was excellent and had a great sauce.
The final dish was an eggplant dish that everyone seemed to love It wasn't my cup of tea, but I was by far the minority with this dish. -

I'm from Sichuan, so I'm critical of Sichuan food. The owner's from Hong Kong, but cooks are from Chengdu. This is the best Sichuan food I've had in TX. I've lived in Houston for over 3 years now, and I go there at least once every 2 months. Love the shui zhu rou pian, ma po tofu, gan bian green beans, double cooked pork, and tofu feichang.

I am sad that I do not live in Houston anymore to enjoy this place, but my family eats here like 4 times a week and usually puts Joyce, our fave waitress on the phone to say hi to me! They have nice lunch specials, but we love the off-the-menu Chinese menu that they choose from for us - we have had some delicious dishes...recommend Cilantro Chicken and Double Spicy Beef. My lunch special fave is chicken + eggplant, but also the grilled redfish is amazing!!! With grilled onions and jalepeno, with lime and for dinner, you get Shrimp fried rice!!!! The owners are awesome, there is great service, and the glasses for drinks are tall!!! Highly highly recommend. My family drives like 50 miles round trip several times a week and it is totally amazing!!
Also, every time I land at Hobby airport, my family makes that another reason to eat here. -

The food here is fantastic! I order delivery from here at least once a month because the prices are great and the portions are generous. My personal favorite is the Beef with Asparagus. Their attention to detail is phenomenal, they even cut their carrots length-wise (the correct way)!
The seafood soup has a latin flavor, reminds me of the soup my mom makes.
Highly recommended! -

I went with a coworker during the lunch rush, and the waitstaff didn't rush us. How cool is that?
IMO, the meal is typical westernized Chinese food. It isn't bad, but it isn't authentic either. Still, for a place this packed and located within a former Pizza Hut on a side of town not too terribly known for its Chinese population, I can't complain.
The lunch plate is actually really big. My co-worker and I thought we would get those so we'd actually be able to finish everything. So much for that.
I really find the name funny, though. It sounds like a motel name, not a restaurant name!
I'll update this when I go again. Parking is a little sketchy at lunch time, but it seems like it might otherwise be adequate.
