This is my absolute favorite restaurant in town, regardless of price....and it's cheap.
The curry dishes are my favorite.  They are a little thicker and sweeter than they way most thai places make their curry...and I love it!
The decor is vastly improved from the way it was a few years ago.  (No more fish coming out of the mirror :) )
    The staff is friendly.
The buffet (though only available mon, wed, fri) is great.

I really have nothing bad to say.  This place is awesome.  I wish the buffet was everyday.

Good Curry, I recommend the yellow curry with chicken or shrimp. The beef curry is flank steak that is not thinly sliced, and you end up fearing a broken tooth rather than enjoying the meat.
I like the food here, and the price is right. But I am doing two stars due to the following:

menus were falling apart. time to update
lint balls were hanging from the light above our table. time to clean.
floor in the main part of the restaurant was filthy. time to clean.
the big tropical plant out on the patio is laying on its side, knocked over.
the plastic cups are cracked and chipped. time to replace.
sitting in a booth means your table and booth seats may slide and move.

the main room has so many different motifs going on it doesn't know what it wants to be. I am surprised the traveling buddha statue has not gotten the hell outta there, given the feng shui disaster that the main room is. But even the waiter describes this restaurant as Vietnamese / Thai / Chinese....so who knows? They are trying to be Pan Asian and ending up with mediocrity when they should just stick to Pho and do it excellent.

your wait staff is very, how shall I describe this...your wait staff is very not in the moment.  Such a dichotomy when the shuffling, confused, waiters are set against the big smiling happy buddha statue in the room.

Hey Pan Asian Owners:  time to do a thorough Spring Cleaning and give the little details the attention they deserve. Or stay sloppy but remove that Buddha statue - it belongs in a clean, organized environment like Umlauf Gardens.

So I've been told by many people this place gives you amazing food.  Well..I've tried 888 about 15 times and it seems to be anything but consistent.  If you want good food I would suggest dinning in, when you get take out they seem to do a poor job of prepping the food, leaving you with little food and poor taste.

    The food I've tried:

Pad thai - Don't recommend, its not your usual pad thai
Mongolian beef - most consistent dish I've had, lots of meat, good taste
Red curry -  good most of the time, but inconsistent. beef is really chewy

    Bottom line:

Try with the knowledge that it may  be mind blowing or it may be lack luster.  It really depends on the day.

Wish there was a 3.5 star option, but I'm feelin generous.  I been trashing the trashy places a lot lately and need to say some good stuff.

I've lived in the hood for years, so I've experienced the vicissitudinous 888 for all throughout my 78741 and 78704 tenure.   It HAS improved.  Sometimes they backslide a bit, but it has gotten better, all in all.  The decor is a little more tasteful than it used to be.  The staff is more consistent and personable.  They improved the music --man they used to play the most inane worse than top 40 stuff--so bad you'd be challenged to order it from the Muzak corporation...Anyhow,  they're were playing Brahms in there one night recently! Surprised was I... and Ella Fitztgerald another night.

There have a fair amount of veg options--most of them good.  The sesame tofu is good but way too sweet.  They could also tone down the sugar in their curries a bit.
Lemongrass tofu is average--they need pointers from Sunflower on this one where the stuff comes out with big ol' whole garlic cloves, stems of fresh cilantro and so on.

Spring rolls are always decent--nowhere near the caliber of Sunflower but Sunflower ain't open late and is up north.   The tofu clay pot has improved.  Got that on my last visit.  Lately i been getting the flat rice noodle thingy with tofu.  It's real good.  I have them make it spicy and always ask for chili paste to bump it up even more in the heat dept.

They have brown rice and it's half decent.  Kudos.  They don't bring enough rice tho.  They pile an okay portion on your plate but I like those places that bring shitloads of it to you in a covered bowl for everyone at the table to partake--family style i think they call it.

About to head over there now for some late night eats.  I'll keep 'em at 4 stars unless they screw something up really bad here tonight. lol.

Oh yeah, one more thing before I try to find my wallet and keys...they could tone down the bell pepper thing a bit.  Way too many green bell peppers.  More bok choy and shitakes, por favor.

I suppose it was my fault that I ordered Thai at a Vietnamese place.  The name changed to Vietnamese something.  Had the tom yum.  Too sour and very plain.  Shrimp swimming in clear sour broth.  Pineapple fried rice was just horrible.  Bits of overcooked duck in heavy fried rice.  Green curry was meh.  Too much coconut milk.  Service was good.  Probably should have stuck with the vietnamese side of the menu.

If you want legit Vietnamese food, DO NOT COME HERE!!! This is the worst Vietnamese restaurant experience I've ever had!!!!  Vietnamese food is my favorite food!

Now, if you are not Vietnamese and you do know what good legit Vietnamese food is, then you will like this restaurant.  All my friends do not have any type of Vietnamese background, and they've never had any other Vietnamese food and they like this restaurant!

Their Pho is the most disgusting, nasty Pho I have ever had!!! The worst Pho experience EVER!!!!

Their cha gio (Vietnamese egg rolls) are definitely disgusting. They are no where close to being cha gio.  I ordered them and it looked like someone took a terd and served it on a plate!  Even it looked horrible, I still gave it a try.  Nasty!! Disgusting!!! never again!!! That's all I have to say!!

One last thing, if you go to a Vietnamese restaurant and the employees don't speak Vietnamese, word of advice, turn around and go somewhere else because they don't know what they are doing!!!  North Austin has the best Vietnamese food!  Go to Pho Saigon!!! It's located off of Lamar in the little China town.

I got food poisoning from the Pho with shrimp here. After throwing up for a whole night, I decided I can never eat a bow of pho again in my LIFE. Especially from this place. I had never had food poisoning before until I tried the pho here. It didn't taste bad, but it sure wasn't worth it.

888 has been in my life for about 6 or 7 years and was my introduction to Pho. Which could both be great and horrible because my standards for Pho are much higher now. Hard to find one that matches. The sesame tofu and yellow curry tofu have become staples in my diet.  If there's ever someone in town visiting or a new friend who's never experienced 888, I definitely take them there.
The only reason I don't give it all 5 is the waitstaff. They're nice enough but certainly not very concerned with being sociable. So just don't expect much in that respect.
Certainly give it a try though. The food is great! You won't regret it.

Awesome little place that I would definitely recommend for friends and or family (read parents in town).  I had the appetizers that come with the grilled eel - amazing and then ordered (and split bc it was enough for 2) the grilled salmon with green curry sauce. My friend ordered some different kind of sake - I didn't partake but the total bill for both of us was $33.  Not bad for a good dinner and drinks.  It's very cute inside - clean - and the service was fine.  They also give you fortune cookies at the end of the meal with is cute ;-)

Although places with enormous menus usually aren't very good, this place is awesome. Just about everything on their menu is delicious, from their fried rice to pad thai to curries to pho. You can find just about anything here. Their staff is extremely nice as well. I have a certain person who always see's to me when I go. He knows exactly how I like my food and always gives me free/more stuff (like free soup or tons of food/rice). He brings out my hot sauces just the way I like them without even asking. Their curries/pad thai/flat noodles/lemongrass platters are to die for. Definitely best curries in austin. They serve it all to you in a nice clay pot and it's filled to the brim.

The place is open super late which is a huge plus. Service might be a bit slow when they're crowded (which they recently have been) but it is worth the wait. I would definitely recommend anyone who hasn't tried this place to give it a shot (especially if you love asian food and thai curry). Prices are also pretty good and the place is quite clean for asian standards.

    Here are some suggestions:
Pho: all of them are good
Fried Rice: pineapple fried rice - comes in a freaking pineapple, with pineapple chunks!
Curry: They have yellow, red, green, and panang -  I personally like the red as it is the most spicy but you can add/take off spicy however you like to any dish
    Pad thai is delicious
Flat Noodles Combination is amazing as well
Sizzling lemongrass combination platter is oh soo good.

But honestly they have everything that you can ever think of and it is all delicious. I bring friends here all the time and they absolutely love it, and come back all the time. I try to find a new thing to get every once in a while and have yet to be disappointed.

We didn't feel like dealing with the Valentine's crowds so ordered food to be picked up from 888 Pan Asian.  It's close to our house and had good reviews, perfect!  Ordered the Pho Ga which was so fresh with the huge sprig of basil, purple onions, fresh jalapenos, cilantro, green onions, chicken, lime, and bean sprouts.  It was only $6.25 and was a huge portion!

We also ordered the Pad Thai with shrimp for about $9 which we were too full to really delve into.  Had to try it, there were I think over 10 larger shrimp in the dish. Really delicious.

Now we have leftovers and full wallets. Learned this place is open late so will be nice for the weekends after a show.

Very good food and opens till late! Service was great!  HUGE portions. ENORMOUS and possibly overwhelming menu...took us 15 minutes to figure out what to get.
The Thai coconut chicken soup was kind of a miss...but everything else was great!
Fresh squeezed OJ is a plus! I'd come back for sure.

DISCLAIMER: I'm pretty new to Asian food since I grew up in a small town, so I can't testify to the authenticity of 888.

That said, I've eaten here a few times and I've never had anything bad! As a vegetarian I appreciate that there are a few solid meatless options. I usually get the lemongrass vermicelli. I like it a lot; I've had the same dish at a few other places and here it doesn't seem as oily? I don't know how to describe it, but I can eat it without feeling completely unhealthy. :)

Portion sizes a huuuuge and the prices are very good considering how much you get. My food always lasts for two meals and sometimes even three if I'm not too terrible hungry.

Service has always been fast and friendly. I'll keep returning!

We met up with friends for their birthday party here and it was quite delicious.  Good spot for large groups as we weren't the only party bigger than 6 people in the place.  I had the tofu bun.  It came with a sauce which I usually find a bit strange for a bun plate but the sauce had lemongrass in it and it was quite good.  The noodles were not all long but seemed to be alot of tiny broken noodles...which made me a bit sad.  The tofu was cut a bit too large, too.

I want to come back here and try other dishes-especially the curry ones.  Alot of people at our table got them and they looked quite delicious.

    This place is GREAT!

I was a little worried when I went in and saw Vietnamese, Thai, Chinese, and pretty much every other Asian cuisine on the menu.  Then, when I saw the Dos Equis fluorescent sign behind the bar I started seriously questioning where the hell I was.

Luckily though, it was all FANTASTIC!  I had a rice noodle plate with delicious duck, and for the wife, NOTHING.........hahahahahahaha........jk.

She had a pho, which was also great.

    Overall, very solid.

I am still pissed. You know why?
    1) When we went there this week our server got our order wrong.
2)Did you know that there is a HOLE in their parking lot which caused me to trip and fall on my ankle in front of a parked cop car!?!?!?! That's right, yelpers, LAUGH IT UP! I would like you to know it's still swollen!
I happen to like 888 very much, but I haven't been able to walk right in the past few days.  Next time I want my Kung Pao in a MF clay pot, bitches!

Not my first time here but it's definitely been awhile. I remember I used to come here based on the premise that it was the "best Pho in Austin." I'm not sure if I really agree with that, mainly because I don't remember.
The drive here is always fun, as the restaurant is located right after a big dip in the hilly road. As I walk in, I always notice the empty buffet to the left. I don't know what time of the day they do buffet, because I have never seen it open (granted, I've only been here like 3 times).
I guess I never noticed before because I've never had it, but the first thing I noticed when I opened the menu was the PAPAYA SALAD! Having had it at every meal in Thailand, it was imperative that I order it because I have yet to find it at any restaurant in the US. The menu offers it with shrimp but the waitress recommended I try the squid.
The flavor is not as strong and pungent as it was in Thailand, but this is to be expected. It still had the light refreshing taste of the papaya that I love, though. The grilled and skewered squid was a nice addition, making the perfect appetizing starter.
I actually didn't opt for Pho at this visit and decided to try the vermicelli bowl instead. It had a good sauce, but for once I feel like they didn't put enough. Most of the time whenever I eat out at Asian places, it's like sodium overload. For this, there was a lot of vermicelli and not an adequate amount of sauce, making the overall taste pretty bland. However, once some of the vermicelli has been eaten and the sauce/noodle ratio was more appropriate, this dish was actually very delicious. The portion was huge also, I had to take some to go.
If I do not find another place to fill my papaya salad crave, then I MUST come back to 888 sometime in the future.

Okay.  2 times in a row we find mystery animal parts in our food.  In two different dishes. The first, an orange chicken dish, had something that looked like a delectable mushroom but instead tasted like a hairless caterpillar. The usually phenomenal curry chicken had something resembling an unborn rat fetus with excessive chewy cartilage. This place used to be very good, but has obviously has followed the protocol for every Austin restaurant:  When it becomes popular, the food quality dies but who cares as long as they're making money.  Add this place to the list of restaurants that cannot be consistent in their food quality.

I'm so beyond lucky to live in an area that has THREE Pan Asian places within a 2 mile radius.  One of them delivers and this one stays open until 2AM!  I've been coming here for a couple of years now I do believe.  Their Pad Thai is really good and has a little bit of spice to it.  Their Yellow curry is delicious as well.  As with most places similar to this, it's super cheap and plentiful.  Yesterday, I had their lunch buffet for the first time.  It was great!  $6.99 and had cold spring rolls (2 kinds), 2 soups, and plenty to choose from.  If cops make you nervous, don't come though.  This is somewhat of a hang out for APD.  Honestly, makes me feel more safe but yeah.  Totally worth it to come here and check it out.  Especially late night.

Meh.  save your time and go up the street to Hai Ky for better Vietnamese.

Extra star for the presentation of our fried rice in a half pineapple.  Clearly, I am feeling generous.

Honestly, the place kinda grossed me out.  And that is saying a LOT from a person that was a Wan Fu regular, which was  previously located immediately to the right, but now closed.... I believe due to health code violations.  This place actually made me sick, but i kept that on the downlow since the BF was so proud of himself for finding a "new" Restaurant for us to eat at.  Sweet guy.   But a super fail in the food category.

Grotesque atmosphere, very good food. The music is really, really bad, and it's loud. Imagine everything bland, ego-worshiping and nauseatingly mediocre about plastic pop culture and now turn that into "music." It would probably sound like an American Idol audition or the dining room at 888. The lighting in several of their booths is dispensed by a single, glaring pendant fixture that may give you the sense you're being interrogated. Their website menu cannot be viewed on an iPhone. Super annoying, as their menu has recently changed. They used to offer an unbeatable menu for 2 consisting of an appetizer (I think it was egg rolls), and two entrees (green curry salmon and salt pepper beef) for something cheap like $22. Alas, no longer. Also, they do not allow service animals! Not cool. All these drawbacks aside, I still go just for the green curry salmon once in a while. Soooo delicious.

Alright. This place is literally close enough to walk to from my house. which is a total plus. So, my first experience with 888, I called in a to go order, and they said it would be ready in 10 minutes, and it was ready and steaming exactly ten minutes later when I walked in the door. We had some wonton soup that was seriously out of this world, also Tom Yung Gai which was awesome. My ONLY complaint about this establishment is that their to go containers are not well suited for soups, or pho. I have never had a bad experience here. The staff are always super friendly. Portions are huge and totally reasonably priced. Food comes out of the kitchen fast, even during dinner, and it always super hot. Love love love. They are also open until 2am, what more could you ask for?

3 stars is A-OK and that is how I feel about 888.

Most reviewers have summed this place up so let me Readers Digest this for you:

    --The Pho is very good
    --This is fusion Asian food
    --The menu is extensive
--The spring rolls are good and very hearty
    --The buffet is popular

If I'm going to eat Asian fusion on Oltorf I will go to Hai Ky.  However, 888 has a leg up on them because Hai Ky closes at 10PM and 888 has recently started staying open until 2AM most nights of the week.

Disclaimer: I have never looked at the menu before, so I can't begin to tell you what they offer. I only order two things and they are both GREAT!!!

I came to this restaurant based on the suggestion of my best friend and came with the mission to try to eat all of a general tso chicken meal. I didn't finish half of it. But it was a great tangy chicken meal with rice for a great price ($7-8) that filled me up and left me to go to sleep. I love orange chicken and didn't think about even trying something different until about 2 months. The orange chicken was just as phenominal.

The layout is very nice inside. They have a few booths and and tables to sit down and eat. On nice weather days they have outside tables to sit out. They decorations are nice and they even have a tv situated where you can catch big sport games.

Its open late and I enjoy going at 12 am. The waiters and staff are very friendly and even remember you by name! I would highly recommend you visiting 888...its one of my favorite places to eat in Austin!

I came here to see why people thought so highly of this place.  I've heard great things from friends about this place.

#1. The service here on a Saturday afternoon was SLOW.  I get upset whenever my appetizer comes with the main meal and it takes more than 30 min to get my food.  Which happened here.

#2.  Red Curry... it was pretty good but their lemon grass dish was eh...  I tried two appetizers, the pork egg rolls and the Asian Chicken Wings... they were eh...

I would come here again to try some other items just to give it another chance, but don't come here with high expectations.  It's not as good as the hype.

It is just another A-OK Asian Fusion restaurant.  I asked the waitress what is good on their menu and what she would recommend.  First things she told me where:  Orange Chicken, General Tso's Chicken... let me give you an advice as an Asian... those two items are something that we don't want to hear.  I didn't come out here to eat Orange Chicken or General Tso's Chicken.

Recommend me anything else and I would be happy.

our waiter was so sweet and helpful.

we went here at 1am looking for some good, semi-healthy food that wasn't ordered in a drive thru. And this place did not disappoint.

The menu is extensive. We ordered the combination vermicelli bowl. Be careful and don't pour all of the red pepper sauce on all at once w/out tasting it. I made this mistake and my mouth was on fire!!! We also had the steamed pork dumplings for an appetizer, they were tasty too.

Not bad, both bowls under $8 and we had so much food that it was enough to eat as leftovers the next day.

OMG I love this place.  I first ate there several years back when I first stopped eating meat and I ordered the sweet and sour tofu.  When it came to the table, I thought for sure they had messed up my order and given me chicken, because whatever was on my plate had a super thick, bready coating.  Surely enough, though, I cut one piece open and it was tofu, but it was DELICIOUSLY prepared the way chicken typically is.  WHO ELSE DOES THAT?! IT'S DELICIOUS!!!!! It's fried to perfection.  The sauce is yummy and it comes with fresh, perfectly cooked veggies.

I've eaten a few other things there, like the salt and pepper chicken, which my Mom specially orders as salt and pepper veggies, and it's deliciously breaded and fired and comes with tasty lemon dipping sauce.  I've also had some good soups, but I really can't help but order the sweet and sour tofu every time I go...

I cannot tell you how many times I will be sitting in my living room, trying to figure out where we could possibly get something to eat past 10 pm. Fortunately, 888 is only minutes away and always open. Better yet, the servers are always smiling and deliver grub in record time.

Even as a vegetarian, I am frequently stuck on deciding what to order because of the variety of dishes on their menus. Usually, I end up with some sort of steamed tofu/vegetable combination with brown sauce as a healthier option, however their green curry and sweet and sour tofu is quite good as well. Portions are generously sized. Also, you can be sure that your dining area will be shared with  a few policemen, they seem to be great fans of this place (or maybe can't find anything else open this late).

    Nice modern-looking environment.
    Mellow music.
    Friendly service.

    Most importantly, great food.
My friend had the combination fried rice. He loved it!
I had the combination clay pot and it wasn't bad at all.
I wish I had chosen my friend's seafood clay pot which looked amazing.

You have to try out this place. Great eat for the late night munchies.

This neat little place serves up a broad array of Asian dishes from Vietnamese to Thai to Chinese.

I got hooked on their buffet after someone told me that I needed to check it out. It is on M-W-F and for only $6.99. It isn't gigantic like most buffets but it is decent and everything is really good imo.

I fell in love with the satay squid item. I can't find mussels in hot and spicy black bean sauce on any buffet since China Emperor took em off (R.I.P. China Emperor) so this item fills that void perfectly like well a square peg in a square hole. The green beans are awesome as well. Tender yet still maintain a nice little crispness. Love them.

I understand that the menu items are just as good which I believe given the fact that their buffet items are the best I've had.

Check it out sometime. Hey, at $6.99, whatya got to lose? ;-)  Unless you're one of those whiny nit pickers, then in that case, don't even bother.

The best fried rice I've ever had. The Pho was top notch too. Nice atmosphere, kind and attentive staff. Highly recommended !
Ps... Hai Ky down the street, not nearly as good, and the staff there a bunch of aloof hipsters. drive the extra few blocks and come here.

    Great food!

We pass by there on the way to Hai Ky (shhh...don't tell) and decided to stop in.  We go there a LOT now.

My favorite dish is the CRISPY PAD THAI.  Wow wow wow.  I think I growled at my husband when he tried to stick his nasty fork on my plate for a bite.

He gets seafood dishes (since I'm allergic)..hmmm..you think he does that on purpose?  Yeah.

Wonderful food, good atmosphere, and HUGE serving sizes.  Split some if you like.  I prefer to eat all the crispy noodles first, then share.  I know..evil.
