Long story short: Yes!!  I can fulfill my Asian food/ingredient cravings whenever I want!!  Well, kinda out of the way, but yeah...

    Long story long:

I sure did pick a good time to move out to Kansas City.  Yes, the weather was a little hot, but at least I wouldn't be moving out in the snow if I had waited to start school in January for spring semester (which my mom wanted me to do).  TWO Trader Joe's just opened up earlier this summer.  Ok... I guess that's it, at least off the top of my head.

But another thing, a large Asian market!!!  I was first told of this from a family I know that lives in Lee's Summit.  They told me about a 99 Ranch like Asian market in Overland Park that just recently opened up.  There's apparently another Asian market not too far from there called Oriental Market (which I happened to go there on a separate occasion and reminds me more of a Mitsuwa Japanese market).

Walking in, I could smell some Chinese herbs, which I'm normally not a fan of, but that to me signified I was in the right place.  They've got a small "food court" stand selling take out food on one end.  Their produce section is still a little lacking, but considering they just opened, I'll give them the benefit of the doubt that it'll only get better.  They also have live seafood, which is mainly lobster, crab, and a couple of fish.  But a live lobster and crab tanks tell you the place is legit.  The prices seemed a little steep, but at least if I decided to splurge on fresh lobster or crab, I know where to go.

Walking up and down the aisles, they seemingly had everything that a 99 Ranch market offers, which means if I ever am in the need to cook Asian food (which actually isn't THAT often), I know where to go.  Yes, this is kind of out of the way for me, as it probably takes a good 20, almost 30 minutes one way to get there.  Ok... still maybe closer to 20, but you know what I mean.

On the other end of the store, they've got a wide variety of cookware, pots and pans that are typical for Asian cooking, like bamboo and metal steamers, woks, spiders (large meshes spoons), as well as plateware and such.  They even have the two compartment hot pot pots!!!
    http://sampan.org/wp-c...

They also have butane camping stoves (which I bought because I have an electric range at home and I HATE cooking on electric), as well as water heaters and rice cookers.  Again, a one stop Asian market stop!!!

I have been meaning to come to 888 Market forever. You see, I love East Asia. I have been there several times, love the people, love the culture, and...love the FOOD! I was looking forward to finding a place to get some good Asian groceries. Finally was able to get to the market recently...

The place is pretty big inside...definitely looks bigger inside than it does from outside. The fruits and veggies are OK...not the greatest, but you can get some "unusual" stuff like lychee (which is one of my favorite things in the world). The prices are hit or miss...sometimes higher than your standard grocery store, and sometimes lower. For example, I bought bok choy (one of my favorite veggies in the world) for something like 60 cents per pound. Unbelievable.

The meat and seafood area is large and definitely has some authentic options like tripe (yum) and chicken feet (never been a huge fan). The frozen food section has tons of dumplings, buns, and sweets. They have a whole aisle of teas, both bagged and loose. Lots of sweets, both in a bakery section and boxed stuff. Lots of sauces from fish sauce and tons of soy sauce varieties to Malaysian hot sauce. Instant noodles of various kinds. They make a homemade kimchee which is pretty tasty - a 12 oz. serving of it is $2.50...this is great as I love kimchee. Tons of Asian spices too.

There is also a section with things like dishes, cooking utensils, cookware and the like. Huge bags of rice, of course, abound.

I did not try any of the prepared/cooked food, but would love to sometime...it looked tasty.

Cash brings a 3% discount if you spend at least $10. The minimum for a credit/debit transaction is $5 Service is like most Asian groceries around the world - pretty bad. However, I'll be back...probably not on any regular basis, but that's mostly because I don't know how to cook with most of the stuff here. However, knowing there is a place just down the street with authentic Asian stuff means I'll be more likely to try cooking Asian deliciousness.

After months of listening to friends rave about 888 Market, we finally decided to stop by and check the place out.  I've never been to the large Asian supermarkets in other cities (though I thought about visiting the big international market in Nashville).  Probably the biggest, nicest place I've been to is the Asian grocery in City Market built several years ago, a marked improvement from the cramped, dimly lit City Market groceries in the days of yore.  While one misses the charm of these little groceries, one does not always miss the narrow aisles and lack of labeling.

888 is even bigger than the City Market grocery.  The aisles are wide and easy to navigate.  We had little trouble finding what we were looking for.  The selection is somewhat better as well, with an even greater variety of goods.  The noodles, spices, and frozen goods are especially good.  The meat/fish, however, is not much better and lacks some of what you'll find in City Market, like crawfish and frog legs.  Nonetheless, we found live lobsters and octopi, and there were the usual odd bits one expects to find at any good Asian market.  Their selection of produce is also quite good, with lots of different varieties of chili peppers and mushrooms.  I was almost overwhelmed by the selection of noodles.

While there we didn't get a chance to check out the food court, but we're definitely planning to on the next visit.  I think 888 warrants a few more.

So it used to be nearly across the street from my house, back in its 87th Street location, but I have to say, it's worth the trouble to go to their new location at 119th and 69 Hwy, not just because it's more than double the size of their old location (the new location was an old Price Chopper/Hy-Vee, don't remember which) but because they've got goodies like a bakery and a couple restaurants (Chinese and Korean/Japanese).

Keep in mind that Asian ethnic markets are about function and efficiency, not about your American sensibilities.  They use leftover boxes as "paper/plastic," they have large, wonderful fish on display, and the chairs in the dining area all say "Brooke" on them because I'm sure they bought them in the liquidation sale of Brooke Insurance.

There is no ethnic supermarket south of the River that compares to this, and I think it would even give that beast in River Market a run for its money (haven't been inside that yet, but have stared at it many a time).

There's a 5% discount if you are a student or if you pay in cash.

Oh, and about 1000 varieties of Ramen.  For those who think "Ramen" has anything to do with "Top Ramen" or "Cup-A-Noodle," "Ramen" to Asians is a dizzying variety of flavors and varieties that you use as a base.  You can add kimchi, eggs, meat, vegetables.  For an Asian, eating Ramen plain would be like asking an Italian to eat a plate of spaghetti with no sauce, or maybe just olive oil.  It'll do, but not really.  For those of you who don't remember ramen since college, try some ones that have no English on them, save the directions :-)

This is also a great place to buy mochi, Japanese ice cream - or durian, that stinky, delightful tropical fruit.  You can also buy Ramune by the case (ramune is the marble-in-your-soda Japanese favorite)

I'm new to the Kansas City area and was thrilled to find this market! I went to a couple in KC and they were very limited in selection. This place has a good variety of brands and I was even able to find a lot of good vegetarian friendly foods for the husband. I love their little tea pot and cup gift sets up front .

The meat and seafood selection is not up to par for an Asian market. I use to live by a wonderful market in southern California so I got a little spoiled!

They're also located in the same center as a little Indian market so that is nice and convenient as the 888 mainly has Chinese, Vietnamese, Korean, and Japanese foods.

Don't know much about this place - other than that it is enormous and has lots of delightful aisles of interesting things.  I didn't get a chance to see the whole store - too huge - and didn't buy anything but enjoyed looking around.  I can't wait to come back.

I just discovered this market via yelp a week ago. I have since been twice and am thrilled by their varied of things. I actually think this place is a bit dangerous because i kept finding things that I would love to get and I had to force myself to leave before I spent too much!

They have a large produce section, lots of fresh sea food, dishes, cookware, all sorts of things. I love that they have a large supply of boba tea ingredients too!

    I will definitely be back!

After my fifth visit, I still haven't seen everything in this store. This is a summation of my most recent visit.

I was finally able to make it to 888 at a decent-enough hour to try the Korean diner. It had all the feel of the eateries at the back of big city supermarkets, but with KC Korean restaurant prices. Sigh, the price you pay (figuratively and literally) to eat authentic Asian cuisine in the Midwest! The choices were plentiful and mostly typical, but this place also had jja jang myun (good), kim bap (didn't try), and what seemed to be house-made soondeh. We ordered some. We weren't fans. We much prefer the frozen kind. Theirs was too mushy and had some unfamiliar fillings. I did, however, enjoy their house-made ojing-o jut. It's a "sold-by-the-pound" side dish that I took home. It could've been a lot spicier, but the flavor was good and tasted quite fresh. Yippee for pre-made banchan.

As for the rest of the store...I have mixed feelings. It's almost intimidating, and I don't feel as familiar with the aisles as I do at Oriental Supermarket. I looked everywhere, but couldn't find sliced ribeye to make bulgogi. All I could find was shabu shabu meat. Also, the prices at 888 seem to be about the same as at Oriental, though I admit that they have a larger variety of products. I need to go sometime when I have an hour to roam around and figure out where "my" items are. I'm just excited that I don't have to go all the way to Metcalf to purchase Asian groceries. Hooray!

Roomie and I use to go to this market a few times when it was located across from the main Johnson County library.  I finally decided to bring roomie to the new location.  She always loved going because they had a lot of the strange foods that she use to eat back home in Guatemala.

Which she did a $10 cantaloupe-sized green spike alien thing.  Even the cashiers didn't know what it was.  She said it was a favorite fruit of hers back home.  Uh... ok.

I was just the follower of the many circles she made.  This place is huge and clean.  Her verdict was that they were missing more of the fruits she use to get from them, but they may not have been in season yet.  Also, the prices have nearly doubled from the other location.  $10 for one piece of freaky alien fruit seemed pretty steep for me.  For that price I expect some alien talk too.

I went to this huge Asian super market for the third time.  I went to the pastry section and bought seven pastries.  As I turn to browse the rest of the store, I see a sign that say, "Buy eight get one free."  So I ask the cashier if I can pay for one more  and get one free.  She tells me "No.  It has to be on one ticket."  This is just 30 secs after I made the purchase!  If she told me this with a smile or with a shred of courtesy, I would not be writing this review right now.  There was never as "Hello" or a "Thank you".  Whatever!  I won't make a big deal to get a free pastry.  After I'm done shopping, I stop by the Korean food.  I get dukboki and kim bap.  Dukboki has no fish cake and hardly any veggies.  Kimbap is the most bland kimbap I have ever tasted.  Costco kimchee taste way bettert than the kimchee they serve.  Again,  no smile no hello no thank you.   I don't ask for much, but there was 0 customer service .  With that being said, there is a Korean man in charge of the Korean section of the store.  I knew him when he owned his own Korean store on Nall and 95th.  He was very helpful and knew where everything was.  And, the cashier of the store itself did smile and greet me.  So I guess I will leave a 2.
BTW their Chinese food resteraunt is AWFUL!!!  Bowel ramen taste better

Although it is a huge store with wide selection there have been times when a particular item I ALWAYS get isnt in stock. They seem to love cash you get 3% off at the grocery register if you pay cash. They keep two lanes open and one is a cash only lane.  There are days when there credit card machine is down and you will be screwed because there will be no overhead announcement to warn you. In fact you will stand in line for a half an hour and all they say is its running slow.  Oh and my kids wanted to go see the seafood tanks we walked over and the tanks were filthy and one dead fish in one tank!

I love this market.  I'm Vietnamese so am always on the look out for the ingredients and snack foods that I crave.  888 is clean and well-organised, so a good introduction for a novice to Asian market (some markets are a bit dingy and chaotic, which can appear intimidating).

I would say that their dry foods (e.g. spices, cans, etc.) are very good.  Their fresh vegetables are okay.  Vietnamese people eat a lot of fresh herbs and these are missing from the 888 portfolio.

They sell fresh tofu in big buckets in the fresh food aisle and you can purchase dried beans and grains by the scoop.  For those who cook with a lot of pulses, beans, etc. this is more economical.  It is especially useful if you cook for just one or two mouths, because those big packets can feel like a waste.

Finally, I would recommend the small diner located within the restaurant.  It serves mainly Chinese food.  Now, while I would not call myself a Chinese food expert, I have dined out a lot when in London with my Chinese friends.  They always took me to their favourite spots so I think I have a fairly good grip on what's good and what's not.  The mushy, greasy fayre served up in most mid-Western 'so called Chinese restaurants is nothing like Chinese food I'm used to.  The stuff they serve at this little diner is, however.  Try something like the roast duck served on rice with veggies.  Big enough for two to share (and be absolutely stuffed).  Gorgeous stuff!

I just move to KC and this is the first Asian grocery store I visited. Yelp reviews steered me to 888 Market. I was impressed. I was skeptical about any decent Asian grocery store in KC, but 888 Market follows through. It's nearly on par with the best Asian grocery stores I've been to in the suburbs of San Francisco and Toronto.

The store is big and seems to be geared toward Chinese fair. There's common Japanese and Korean items but not nearly as much variety as the 90% Chinese products they carry in the store

Unfortunately I already ate before I went shopping because I really wanted to try what their cafeteria had to offer. I plan on eating there before I shop next time.

I was super happy to shop at 888 during my last trip to KC.

The selection includes some of my absolute favs: Asian Home Gourmet Spice Pastes (free of MSG, preservatives, and artificial colors); Hi-Chew candies (superior to Starburst); and Lotte ChocoPies (the Korean answer to Moon Pies).

The housewares sections also had a number of rare finds: $12.99 Yixing clay tea mugs with built-in leaf strainers; vacuum/thermal cookers (pot luck life saver!); cute bento boxes; and large straws for make-at-home tapioca tea parties.

After shopping, a friend and I stopped for lunch at the deli. I had high hopes. Sadly, the tapioca in our pearl tea was not fully cooked. I still held out for my entree. I ordered the Shanghai Meatball Noodle Soup. At just under $8, the huge portion size made me feel like I was a real winner in terms of value. The two meat balls were ginormous, the broth was refreshing, and the cabbage buried at the bottom of the bowl was fresh. Unfortunately, the meatballs let me down; they were so full of filler that the texture more resembled hot dogs than succulent, stewed pork.

Nevertheless, 888 is still a winner in my book because it passed a critical test that I consider while at any Asian market: It passed the smell test!  Absolutely no foul odors stray from the fish or produce sections. If you're like me, you'll be excited to shop here since you'll be totally free to concentrate on the stuff for sale rather than figuring out how to run away from the back section of the store.

The latest and GREATEST in Asian SuperStores of Kansas City.  This place is huge, I understand after talking with the owner that there will be a Sushi Bar and Dumpling Restaurant in 2 months.  They are well stocked on Fresh Meats, Veggies, Fresh hot foods, Roast Duck, Pastries....Even Art and Plants.  It reminds me of the stores back home in San Francisco.  Except this is 3 times larger, since this location was originally HyVee.

It's very clean, nice seating area to eat or rest.

After reading (Via Helms) that the new 888 Market opened, I immediately went to go see it.

And when I did, I realised that the KC metro area FINALLY had an Asian market that was large enough to compete with similar markets found in Houston, Dallas, and Chicago. And honestly, it's not something I ever expected to see here in KC (at least not this soon). This store, it's mind boggling HUGE. And the craziest part is, as Helms mentioned, it's going to get even BIGGER than it is simply because another 20% of the store floors have yet to be unpacked and installed.

No matter what your Asian background, you will find a wide variety of items. I personally think that in regards to Filipino items, they still need a few more things to be a one-stop shop for those things, but it's on it's way for sure.

Great selection, great prices, and the deli is full of yummy things containing ingredients most westerners would have difficulty identifying.

Bubble tea at the deli is average, but cheap. Still prefer bubble tea from Blue Koi or Nica's, even at twice the price.

Purchases under $5 are cash-only, as is the deli.

If you've got a Sprint 4G phone, Clear is in the process of putting a 4G tower on the roof of 888's building, so 4G should be solid while you're sipping on bubble tea and enjoying your lunch.

If I'd thought about it, I would have *willed* this aura, but instead it formed around me like dew mist on a jungle lily.  I'm speaking of the aura I have that is visible only to international food suppliers, which facilitates this routine:  I walk into an international market, and I REALLY AM just shopping for root vegetables.  Next thing I know I find myself escorted to a back room where I am soon fiendishly using the "process of elimination" to determine which cult DVD's from this proprietor's country of origin WONT be going home with me tonight.

Not sure what happened with 888.  There was no secret movie invite here.   Is it the sheer arena-sized physicality of the place that separates me a movie connection?  Have I been socially reappropriated to a different kind of "B" list?  Does 888 simply not have a secret movie stash? Could there BE a store like that?  These  questions unbalance my humors enough that I can't bring myself to ask the earnest looking 888 staff.

Failing my usual routine, I was in the unfamiliar position of actually having to peruse the edibles.   I was introduced to ALL SORTS OF MAGICAL TREATS!  Organic chestnuts, delicious vegan seafood, ginger infused sesame oil, watermelon mochi, rows of canned nectars, and a selection of steamed buns that would outshine the Navy!  Can I say that months ago I surrendered to defeat when I learned that coconut powder is over ten dollars on the internets?  Truth be told, sometimes I want coconut flavor without additional white liquid.  Well, I found coconut powder for 69 cents here.  Take that, internets!

Maybe the 888 personnel sensed that my delight was peppered with a dash of bruised ego.  Pickled turnips and chili paste would be a happy hook-up if I wasn't silently questioning my new status as a cinematic outsider.  My cashier turned my frown upside down with a SUDDEN FREE GIFT OF LO MEIN NOODLES for purchasing X amount of food stuffs.  Thank you, 888!   Now I knew not to take it personally.  Thank you, big shiny gold Buddha by the door!   See you soon, exotic plant holders and paper lanterns.  I may not have been able to watch lactating girl gangs chain fight Yakuza bosses to a bloody pulp that evening, but those steamed buns were stuffed with flavor!

This place is HUGE. 888 International Market is located in a former HyVee grocery store, and it's crazy ginormous...and crazy clean too.

I had a MUCH better experience at 888 Market then disgusting Chinatown Food Market in the River Market. Extremely clean. (Thank you fellow Yelper Joe H. for the pleasant suggestion)

No bugs crawling around, that's a good sign.

Wide selection of ice creams, noodles, sauces, cookware, teas, spices, fish. You name it, they have it.

They also just recently opened their deli and dumpling bar. I have yet to try, but it looked worthwhile. The KC area really has a nice thing going here at 888 Market. Great place to just wander aimlessly around, marveling over food items you don't really need, but buy anyways because it's just so cool.

Peace out Chinatown Market! Hello 888 Market!

Checked out this place for the first time yesterday. It's huge, pretty clean and the seafood sections didn't have a foul smell like some asian markets I've been in.

They seem to have a large variety of almost everything you can think of.
I was excited to see some of the little treats like I like to pick up in China. So that was pretty cool.

A few things that made me unsure and a little disappointed:
someone said they have fresh steamed buns, but when I was there they only had fresh steamed dumplings and their buns were all pre packaged. Also many many items in their freezer section were covered in freezer burn, including some meats.

Then they have signs in their cafe saying "fresh fruit smoothies" which made me excited until I got up to the counter and there was no fresh fruit to be found, only powders.  This didn't surprise me because i've had this experience at many other places.  But I was disappointed to see that happen here after how highly other reviews talked of their cafe and drinks.

I know I'll be back for a few harder to find items. However for stuff like canned coconut milk, this place is the same price as Walmart and Price Chopper for the exact same items.

Tough stuff to cook at home as much as we do.
Where do you find fish sauce that is not priced like liquid gold? Lemongrass that doesn't  cost 4 bucks for JUST enough to smell?
Shallots that do not cost TRIPLE the amount per pound of ground Angus beef?
Bok Choy varieties that go from baby to BIG?
    Well... HERE IS WHERE!!!

If you are looking for that special ingredient for your global cooking adventure. Try here. Hell, you may add to the adventure because you may have no clue what you are actually buying!   : )

    Update: 2/18/12
Being a regular of 888, I am lowering my rating from a 5 star to a 2 star.  This is purely because of the poor customer service I have received with a couple of issues.

Issue #1:  I purchased a bottle of Ointment for sore muscles.  When I got home, I opened it up and noticed that the packaging was wet.  Somehow, the lid must not have been tightened properly during packaging and leaked out.  I returned it and spoke to Jessica (I think she's the owner's daughter) and she treated me very suspiciously as if I weren't being truthful about it making comments such as: "That's strange, I have never seen this before". Her attitude of questioning me was really inappropriate, especially as she knows I am a regular and spend a lot of time and money there.  She did replace it, but only after an exhaustive interview as if I were a suspect of some crime.  (Shaking my head) Oh, and when she brought out the new bottle, she opened it up in front of me and showed me that it was okay as if I might lie to her about that one.  Give me a break! Love to be treated like a criminal.

Issue #2:  I bought a 20 lb bag of their Three Elephant Brand of Jasmine rice.  Opened it up at  home and it was full of bugs!  Called 888 and asked to speak to Jessica since she is the one who checked me out and since I tossed my receipt, I knew she would remember that I purchased it.  (I purchased it on the same day I returned the ointment).  Well, Jessica wasn't available so I spoke to her sister who also treated me with suspicion. She said she would have to look at it before it was returned and I told her that I wanted to know if it would be returned since I have a long drive to go out there.  She said she would have to take my number and call me back.  Her attitude was the same as Jessica's; as if I were somehow being dishones or something.  Really poor treatment. I don't know if she will call me back or not but while I really like 888's variety, their pricey has been creeping up more than Oriental Supermarket and I just don't like the way they treat me. Especially when I spend many hundreds, into the thousands of dollars every year at their store.  Well, that's about to come to an end.  I guess they are more concerned about losing a buck or having to replace something than they are about keeping a customer that spends a lot of money there!

888 is a HUGE new Asian grocery store in the OP area.  Anything asian you want, they got.  The store is big, roomy and you could easily spend 2 hours there looking around.  They often have good sales on various items.  A big plus is their Chinese eatery in the front of the store. (one negative is they only accpet cash at this eatery). Want a steamed pork bun, Chinese pastries or some char siu pork hanging in window or maybe a bowl of chinese noodles with pork and pickled cabbage?  It's there for you!
News just in!  .........they also have a Korean Restaurant in the store which is really good.  Their bulgolgi beats Choga's hands down.  Their banchan though is nothing to get excited about (vegetable side dishes).  You only get three sides. But the prices are out of this world.  You can get a large portion of bulgolgi, rice, 3 banchan, for 6-7 bucks.  Not bad when at Choga's, you'll be 14-15 bucks...but their banchan rocks at Choga.  They also serve other dishes too.  The two ladies that work there are nice and will take are of you.

Update:  Having returned to Oriental Supermarket in OP, I am seeing some prices are lower there than 888.  They may have lowered their prices with the new competition.  For example, a large Daifuku is about 1.29 (best recollection) and it's 1.69 at 888.  I noticed a couple other items that were less expensive as well.  Gotta love the free market system.

I decided to eat at the cafe at 888 Market today, and I'm glad I did. I ordered a #19 Pork Noodle with Green Onions.  It was quite tasty.  I'd say it was basically a non-spicy version of dan dan noodles, but, hey, I'm no expert.  I did add some spicy chili garlic sauce to it.  The dish was basically noodles, ground pork, and green onions all with a hefty dose of sesame oil.  I enjoyed it quite a bit although I could have used some more vegetables.

Next time I think I'll try the Shanghai Noodles with Spicy Pork.

Okay, I'm gonna up the stars on this.  The korean fast food joint in there is great.  She sells her side dishes too. And then the rest of my previous review is still valid.

My buddy needed to go to an Eye doctor for some reason so I offered to drop him off. Instead of waiting in the hot sun I decided to stroll into this huge freaking Asian market that popped up over night.
As I walk in the familiar smell of fish and curries fill my nose. Knowing I want chicken dumplings I walk to the frozen section. I don't see any chicken! They have beef, veggie etc... I give up and walk through the store only to find another frozen section with chicken dumplings! I walk to the sauces section to look for dumpling dipping sauce. They don't have it...knowing that I'm in an Asian market and only chaos rules I searched out to find another sauce section with the dumpling sauce. I find the chocolate Mocha icecream and go on to find Ramen noodles in 3 different places in the store. I can only assume they have a Japanese, Korean and chinese sections but my dumb, ugly American self will never know the difference.
They have huge scrolls that cover the check out lines. I can't read it so I assume it says this lane closed until I see a small Asian women behind the cash register.
Then I realize the scroll is for decoration and my big dumb 6' 3" American ass is the only one hindered by this scroll. I notice  another sign in English that says 3% discount for cash payments. Oh well I pull out my credit card and the lady smiles at me.

Finally, a decent size Chinese-focused market in KC area.

Look, I'm saying "decent size", not quality.

There're a few Vietnamese-ran grocery stores in City Market area, and prices are quite competitive. That's the price you pay for not driving all the way to downtown and load up a bunch of stuff and come back to southern JoCo.

The store has plenty of space... given it used to be a HyVee store. However it's not offering a whole lot more than what used to be in their 87th St location.

Veggie selection kinda vary... but probably expected. Don't be afraid to ask for new stock if you think they're not fresh enough for you.

Meat selection is ok as well.

The BBQ and food court is a nice touch, but what is wrong with cash-only? You're not going to earn my business with that kind of practice.

I think the location is the only thing that I really like... next to 69 instead of I-35 like  Ho's, which is too "west" for me... and  87th is too far away from the targeted demographics is.

Now... like I've said in Ho's review, "let there be competition".

This Asian market does a good job covering all the bases with products from everywhere you can think of in the Far East. I was mostly interested in their candy selection - I wanted litchy gummys from Japan. They had the litchy and some other snacks I like (shrimp chips, pocky, sesame candy). Prices were reasonable - what I was most worried was how fresh everything would be - no issues there - just like the snacks I buy at home.

A note - they are moving to a new location at 10118 w 119th st sometme in August. Kind of a bummer because this location is close to my office. But the new location is close to the hotel I stay in when I am here, so that's a push. I will definitely check out the new location when I return.

This is a large, Chinese/Asian supermarket with items from most Asian countries, so this would be the perfect place to buy some general Asian groceries.  I was a little disappointed at the food court selection though.  It seems like they only have that one Korean restaurant, and one Chinese restaurant, so really not quite there yet.  I understand that this is a new establishment, so I am hopeful that they will improve it, in time.  I just moved here from Southern California, where there are Korean, Chinese, Vietnamese, Filipino & Thai Supermarkets--so the limited selection is a little disheartening, but I'm happy there is SOMETHING for Asians like me who miss the food.

888 is a (mostly) Chinese grocery with a fantastic selection of goods for Chinese cooking, and a good Asian produce section.
The store includes a large produce section and a huge dry goods section as well as meat, seafood, frozen foods, and some prepared items. Prices on the Chinese items that fill up the central shelving are pretty good, but the items in the Japanese and Korean section at the back of the produce aisle are higher than at other area specialty stores. The selection has a similar situation, fab on Chinese, adequate on other types of Asian foods. If you are looking for Japanese or Korean groceries in particular, you'd be better off at the Oriental Supermarket up on Metcalf.
I do love the variety of Chinese items though, and I was particularly thrilled to find a wide selection of wheat gluten meats, specifically Vegetarian Peking Duck, oh my tasty!
The produce section has lots of veggies and fruits that are hard to find, and has good prices on items like persimmons and burdock root.
Finding Mooncakes during Mid-Autumn festival was also a treat, even if they were super high priced.
I haven't tried the prepared foods yet, but look forward to trying something new in the upcoming months.
Overall 888 is a great Chinese market, but be aware that this isn't a comprehensive pan-Asian grocery.

I've shopped here regularly since moving back to Kansas City.  888 seems to have everything I used to find in markets in San Francisco, which has a huge Asian population and endless Asian stores.  888 has a pan-Asian selection, with products for Filipino, Vietnamese, Japanese and Thai cooking as well as a vast selection of Chinese products.  There are also things like restaurant sized cookware, housewares, etc.  There's a huge selection of live, fresh and frozen seafood, tropical Filipino ice creams, pork products, chicken feet (an essential for making chicken soup with body) and much, much more.  It's sometimes hard to find things, but the kids who staff the cash registers are English-speaking and can help you find whatever you're looking for.  This is a major resource for Kansas City!

Update 10/21/10:  Stopped in today and they had huge ripe Fuji apples at $1.49 a pound and bunches of finger bananas at the same price!  I used to get them when I lived in Brazil (banana nanica) and they're small but delicious!  They also had lots of frozen dim sum that are going to make a nice quick dinner!  I just love shrimp shiu mai!  And I love 888 Market -- it's really got just about everything East and Southeast Asian you could imagine!

Update 11/13//10:  It just keeps getting better and better!  Went in today to pick up some of the fabulous Magnolia brand tropical ice cream from San Francisco.  It's in the freezer on the back wall.  Try the coconut macapuno (bits of young coconut) if you like coconut ice cream.  It's the bomb!  The store has expanded, if you can believe that!  The Korean restaurant and deli are open, at the front of the store, with items like fresh kim-chee.  They've also opened up the partially unused area towards the back of the store, which now offers a selection of Chinese tchotckes (some treasures among the tackiness) and lots of housewares, including restaurant sized stuff.  Check it out if you need large cookware, it could save you a trip to a restaurant supply house.  The produce department was featuring whole jackfruit today.  You have to see one to believe the size of the fruit -- they look like green beached whales and must weight 20 pounds or more, so even at $1.99 a pound they're no bargain.  But if you know what to do with a jackfruit you can freeze the flesh successfully.  This has really become "Asian Central" for Kansas City.  They seem to carry everything, and if they don't, I'm sure they can get it for you!

Ok. The kids & I went to check this place out today since we miss our Asian markets in Dallas & Atlanta. I have to say I was pretty happy with what I found. It's in an old Hyvee, so it's probably 6000+ sf.  There is plenty of parking and it's easy to get to off 69S.  Oh, and they give a 3% discount if you pay cash.

They had most of the products we love (although we couldn't find any of the ice cream mochi). It was really clean and well organized. The prices were all very good. The kids loved that they had all the Japanese candy, gum & snacks that they love.

I have to say the absolute best thing about it is the noodle/dumpling bar. It's worth the trip from the Northland (Parkville) just to eat lunch here. I had the noodle bowl with eel which was very filling & flavorful. My son had duck & rice. The duck was really moist & tender, and the plum based sauce was delicious. The girls split some steamed buns (pork, BBQ & seafood) which were very well received. They serve bubble tea here which was ok, but my daughter's bubble mocha "frappe" was much better.

I will definitely be making the trip down here for my Asian cooking fix!

As good as it gets.  The restaurant takes cash only and is a little slow but the food is great, have tried half the menu and haven't found anything I wouldn't order again.  They are adding a Korean restaurant soon, hope it is equally as good.  The selection in the grocery is great and now that they have it organized by county things are much easier to find.  The produce, meat and seafood are always fresh.  The best part is the staff is helpful and knowledgeable.

pretty nice for KC!  definitely as good as the area gets I think.  the river markets stores are a little more SE Asian themed, but not quite the mega store like this.  I just got back from Houston the other day, so I can can compare!  more fresh produce down in Houston though.  The bakery and food selection is pretty nice too!  worth my 15 mile trek!  plus 3% off if u pay in cash!

I've continued to eat at 888's deli about 2-3x/wk since it first opened.  ive eaten there on every day of the week.  regardless of how busy or slow they are, the food never fails.  items highly recommended:  the steamed meat buns, any noodle soups, rice dumplings (glutinous rice and pork seasoned with soy sauce wrapped in bamboo leaves), and bakery items.  it's best to visit the bakery on the weekends where the turnover rate is higher so you get fresher breads.  items not recommended: the bubble tea (i tried it once and will never touch it again, was horrible), the roast duck (overly salty and skin was not crispy).  in terms of grocery shopping, its best to go on saturday when they bring out the freshest vegetables esp. bok choy.  the meats are fresh any day of the week tho.  btw deli is cash only
