Manhattan, NY
This is the cheapest, best massage in the city! $42 for an hour, but I always give $60, because the amount of muscle that gets put into each massage is truly amazing. And, I always feel so amazing afterwards. The therapists do talk to each other, which maybe would bother some people, and the decor is "no frills", but I don't mind either of these things at all. I really prefer to have a really great massage at a super reasonable price with a friendly masseuse than have a more expensive, more "spa" experience (I've had way worse "spa" massages, anyway). When you need the knots worked out (like I did yesterday!), this place is magic. I have had a variety of masseuses here--I used to only ask for Lulu, but the truth is, I have never been disappointed. They are all great! I literally feel like a new woman right now....

New York, NY
The first time I had a massage at this place, I had an amazing massage, which was somewhat ruined in the end because of the pushiness regarding the tip that others have described. I tipped over 20% but the masseuse asked me for an additional dollar, telling me that was the usual tip. I was so taken aback that I had to ask her to repeat herself. I always tip at least 20% and have never had a comment or complaint. Being that they only take cash and I had just gone to the ATM and only had $20 bills, I did not have an extra dollar, so she got what she got, and she smiled and thanked me in the end.
Fast forward a few months later, I am still thinking about the excellent massage I had there, but reluctant to go back given the tip issue. I went in on a whim and had the same masseuse, who seemed to recognize me (I bet she says that to all the girls). As before, she was very friendly and skilled, requiring little guidance or feedback.
The place itself is unsurprisingly no-frills, and the staff do talk to each other in between rooms and may answer phone calls while they are working on you, but the lighting and music are relaxing, and the quality of the massages make it all worth it. I tipped a little extra this time and didn't get any pushy requests for more this time, so I think it's safe to say I'll be back. I feel amazing and I know the benefits will last for days as they did the last time. I've been to a lot of Chinese massage spots like this around the city, but this is my favorite by far. -

I decided to try a new place in the east village today and found this on Yelp. When I got there I asked about the half hour vs hour rate, and went with the hour for $42. My masseuse, Lulu, was awesome and strong. BUT... I'd have given the place four stars if not for the weirdness paying the bill. I had the cash & figured they'd prefer that. I calculated a 20% tip on my phone app and handed her cash, asking for change. She told me, "The usual tip is $10." I was really surprised, because 20% isn't a bad tip. Then she only gave me $2 back, and in the awkwardness of the moment I didn't realize she was taking an additional dollar, for a 26% tip. I guess it's ok. I got a good massage and that was only two dollars more than I'd have expected to pay, but even so it's just a bit... ballsy or pushy or grabby or something.
I see from the other reviews this is common. I'd say if I go again, I'll have the $52 ready in my pocket and say I don't have any more than that, thank you! -

I tried this place out after going to numerous other tui na places in the area, and I have to say it's pretty awesome. The atmosphere here is much like the other tui na places -- soft music is played and there is a private curtained off area to get your massage in, but the therapists do talk to each other throughout your session. That's not a problem for me, however, because in my view they do such a good job it doesn't matter what the place looks like or how casual it is!
For $33 plus tip, I got a very theraputic 45 minute body work session in which my therapist worked out all the kinks. Normally, I don't expect a lot from the low-priced tui na places, so I usually go in thinking I'll just spend some time there come out a little more relaxed, and usually, that's what I get. But the therapist at this place worked out all the kinks in my tense shoulders and neck, and when I left, they were noticeably gone. And they stayed gone!
I always believe the mark of a good body work session is that you are not only feeling better right when you leave the session, but you can still say you are feeling better a few days after the session. That definitely is the case with this place and I'm very excited that I found such an affordable option for body work. When I get stressed, my neck and shoulders get so tense they start hurting, and it's good to have a place to go to get it taken care of and feel better, without paying an arm and a leg!
This therapist worked out all the kinks in my shoulders without making it too painful. I know part of the tui-na technique is that they really are supposed to hit those pressure points in your back with sharp strokes and deep jabs with their elbows, but this therapist did it at just the right pressure without making me feel any lingering pain afterwards. It was a strong massage done right, and cheaply, and I will DEFINITELY be back!! -

I tipped more than 20% and was told that I should leave more. The whole experience was pushy and rushed and a bit sloppy. The massage itself was mediocre. They use baby oil which smells super strong and stains your clothes and overall it just seemed sloppy. I know this is a hole in the wall, cheap, spot, but I have definitely had better.

I would have actually given this place a 4.5, but Yelp doesn't let you do that.
This is a very long review so the parts you need to read if you don't want to read the whole thing are in parentheses.
I'll start from the beginning. I had gone to another seedy Asian massage place about two weeks ago, where I came out more sore than I had going in. I'm pretty sure that's not the way it's supposed to work. So really I needed a massage from my massage.
My roommate loves this place so I decided to give it a try. I'm a girl on a budget, trying to do almost the impossible in New York and trying to build up my savings account. (This place is affordable. If you can't afford the $42 for an hour, you can get the great same service for $33 for 45 minutes. But $42 is pretty good.)
The place, although not your five star spa experience, is much nicer than most Asian massage place and definitely at a lower price point than most.
(It's dimly light which gives it more of a relaxing experience. The women are very nice. I had Coco, who was very accommodating and the BEST part, SHE KNEW WHAT SHE WAS DOING!) You would think that this is a given when going to get a massage, but after my last experience at the other place where I couldn't stand up straight the next day, you find that's not always the case.
(She knew where I was tense and told me. She focused on those areas without me having to tell her. She let me know that my right shoulder was tenser than my left (which is totally true). She asked me if the pressure was too much and that she would lighten up if it was. However shew as great. The pressure was strong yet not over powering or stressful.)
She was sweet and I felt relaxed and taken care of; she kept calling me baby girl. But this place gets busy so make sure to call ahead of time and make and appointment.
I've still got major knots (only because my back is just that tight) and I fully intend on going back until they are all out. -
Review from Barb L.
New York, NY
My back usually has a lot of knots and is often quite tense. I've tried my fair share of massage places that were rather inexpensive but effective. I failed to find one in Paris, found a great one in Toronto, and this has to be my go-to place in New York.
The entrance to the place may be a little off-putting; following a bright yellow sign down the stairs. The ladies, however, are rather nice and are quite strong. Albeit, they sometimes talk to each other, but they aren't awfully distracting or loud about it.
Also, you can get a "come 10 times and get the 11th massage free" card which can help you save on at least one session.
I've never really had a problem with their pushiness for tips. Then again, I tip rather fairly - totaling about $52 to $60 each time I come depending on how much cash I have on me at the moment. -

Ha! Yeah. Came here alone my first time. It would have freaked me out initially, but it came highly recommended. Kind of hot in a dirty sort of way- naked in a room with a bunch of strangers. All you wear is a big towel and when you first lay down, they snap it up high so you are totally buck for a second. Then it begins. The women are quite strong- some better than others. Some get a bit more PRIVATE than others as well, if you know what I mean. I felt like one woman was way up in there.
I have my "buy 10 get one free" card, baby. And I'm a-gonna use it. -

Everything everyone else has posted about this place is true! I am glad I read most of the reviews and was well prepped for the experience.
The ladies chatted a bit too much during my session, but this place is worth what you pay for it and more.

Review from Allison J.

A friend of mine swore by this place and I went there just last week. From the street, you walk down a set of stairs that leads to a brightly lit entrance. When you open the door you notice how dark and red(?) the inside is and it made me feel like I might get a "happy ending" massage. But... it's not that sort of place. The receptionist is also a masseuse and I was warned that by my friend that there was a chance my masseuse might stop the massage to answer the phone.
My roommate came with me and the two of us were escorted to an area next to reception that is partioned by a simply curtain. The curtain was opaque from the ground up to about 5 feet and then see-thru from that point to the ceiling. There were two massage tables side by side and our masseuses asked us to undress to our panties. I was highly aware of the fact that people coming into the place could see my little head above the opaque part of the curtain. My masseuse held up a towel (like you do when you're out camping) for me to hide behind while I got undressed.
I slid onto the table on my belly and my masseuse asked if I wanted it medium or heavy. I told her medium. She proceeded to work on my back and legs vigorously and between her and the man in the next room over (also partitioned by a curtain) who was moaning in exctasy, I had a hard time relaxing.
The massage is meant to be invigorating. This is NOT swedish massage. Though... I still managed to pass out for a little bit once I rolled over onto my back. I did feel pretty relaxed in the end and I tipped the woman $15 on top of the $40 paid for the hour.
My roommate asked for a "heavy" massage and her masseuse was literally on top of my friend straddling her and working on her back. My friend said it was the best massage she's had in years and that the woman really worked out some knots she didn't even know existed. She said it was so good it brought tears to her eyes.
Don't be surprised if at the end of your massage, your masseuse takes you by the feet and shakes your legs vigorously then lifts your feet 18" from the table and drops them abruptly to the table. I think it's the standard way of them telling you, you're done! -

I've been to quite a few shi shi spas, but THIS was the best massage I've ever had. I did the 60 minutes for $42 (plus I tipped 23) and it was my best-spent money of all time.
From the reviews I expected a somewhat sketchy ghetto or even dirty place. But I was very surprised with the cleanliness as well as the ambiance. Nice dim lights, very low music in the back, and 5 or 6 very clean tables all separated by little cubicle walls. These ladies have GLADIATOR hands! I love it. I'm an athlete and I need a serious sport/deep tissue massage minus the superfluous spa treatment.
60 minute consisted of everything: scalp, neck, shoulders, upper and lower back, arms, hands, gluts, hams, quads, calves, and feet. She was very nice and always asked if it was too much pressure to make sure. Also, I asked if she could focus on a particular part of my leg and she did a great job.
For the ladies, I felt pretty comfortable and "safe." I can officially say that I've found my new massage place.
Perfect after a hard-days work. Just go in, strip, relax, and let them do all the work. And of course always tip well. -

This place rocks my WORLD
$42 for an hour of a nice little asian lady beating the shit out of your back (well with tip I usually pay $60...still it's a STEAL!)
I want to live here. In one of those little curtained off areas. And just get my muscles turned to buttah.
My masseuse even confirmed that my chinese character tattoo (bad choice, I know) really does mean what it's supposed to! Finally I can sleep at night knowing that I indeed have MUSIC tattooed on my back and not GENITAL HERPES!
Did I mention she got on top of me? Yes, she got on my legs. And it felt AMAZING. She said she was afraid to get on my back cause she thought I was too small, but she like worked her knees into my butt and back of my legs, and oh my god it was amazing. OMG OMG OMG OMG
definitely the best massage I've ever had. And for literally $1 a minute? SERIOUSLY!?!?!
I love New York -

Jack ("I'm #1 masseuse, right?") literally just knuckled and elbowed the mother-freaker out of my back!
My shoulders and neck have been bothering me for awhile. I've done acupuncture, cupping, yoga, blah blah, and I am no stranger to the un-comforts of a seedy Chinatown massage. So I thought I'd try this new place and see how it goes. That guy and his Hulk-hands were no joke!
As others have said, be ready for an open room, changing in front of others, some talking between massage tables, getting a little greasy, and the faint smell of chicken parm from the SUBWAY next door. Oh, and Jack answered his cell during my massage! (on the upside: he did ask several times if the pressure was ok and they remove the oil from your back with hot towels, which feels really nice)
But for $21 for 30 minutes for probably the most vigorous Tui Na I can imagine, I'll dismiss any goofiness that may have ensued. -
Review from Maria S.
Philadelphia, PA
Hands down, the BEST massage I've had. I've paid more than twice as much for massages in fancy joints here and there, and they seriously don't compare to my favorite lady. She remembers me, she remembers my bad spots, she's friendly and sweet.
It isn't a swanky spa, mind... there's cubicle-ish sections separated from a hallway by curtains, and don't be surprised if they talk to one another here and there, or to you. It's just not the same kind of meditative, new age music kind of place as most spas I've been to, but rathe a place to get bad knots worked out with skill.
The prices are literally amazing. With a fat, generous tip, you can still pay a dollar a minute ($42 an hour is low enough that one can afford to over indulge your little lady).
I haven't been there in two weeks, now, and my shoulder is ANGRY at me for missing her. I need a fix. -
Review from Heather H.
New York, NY
If you have a back like mine, made of knots of steel, this is the best place to get it worked on. I've been to a number of froo-froo massage places and I keep coming back to this one. Who knew these small ladies could be so powerful?
Be warned: this is an open layout massage place. There are five tables in one room and two in another. It's best to strip down for your massage, so don't go if you're squeamish about someone maybe seeing some of your skin.
You can't beat the price: $40 for an hour. You are expected to tip at least $10.Listed in: Surviving the Wedding

I'm from Los Angeles, where to get from one place to another you drive. When I first moved to New York, I would wake up in the mornings with leg cramps and hip pain and sore thighs and a throbbing pain in my lower back. I quickly realized that my body simply wasn't used to the extensive day-to-day physical activity that comes along with life in New York. If, in LA, I was going to a restaurant that was the distance from my apartment to the nearest subway (about 6 blocks) I would for sure drive there and valet park. So you can imagine my body's surprise to this new "active" way of life. Needless to say, two weeks into living here, I needed a massage.
This place may be small and dark, and the women may talk throughout your massage, but their hands are sent from the gods. My woman did a quick rub-down on my back and legs in the first five minutes or so, and quickly pinpointed the areas that needed work. Then she went to town, digging and pressing and rubbing and smoothing and elbowing and pinching until she felt that the tension had adequately dissipated. I was so relaxed that I eventually fell dead asleep. When I woke, I was actually sore, and was sore for two days after. The receptionist advised that I drink water and I did and two days out, I felt like a brand new man. Seriously, I felt younger and more flexible. These women are miracle workers and the fact that it's only $42 dollars for an hour is pretty mind-blowing. -

My friend and I went and we got Lulu and Lucy respectively.
First, no frills. Extremely VIGOROUS. But it was great because Lucy kept asking "too strong?" and I answered honestly. My lower back can take ANYTHING and she really worked it. She worked me everywhere...from my scalp...took knots out of my neck...then really concentrated on my lower back...my butt (she asked first) and all of my legs. Then, I turned around and she gave me a facial massage and rubbed my stomach and gave me a fantastic foot massage. And one point, I felt pain in my foot and she affirmed, "you pain here because you tight here" and pointed to my hips.
I've had quite a few massages and this was the most intense one I've ever had. Afterwards, instead of feeling rundown and tired...I felt great and invigorated. Moreover, because she took the knots out of my lower back...I feel like a brand new woman!
I highly recommend this place if you are looking to take the knots out. She is extremely thorough. And SO inexpensive. It's $42 but I paid her $60.
My friend said that he got equal treatment and Lulu literally walked on his back!

I had to update because it's important to share the love.
I've been going to this place (formerly on Cleveland Pl) for over 5 years.
Consistantly best massage of my life, and I've had quite a few.
If you're expecting upscale, aromatherepy, or an 'easy' massage, look elsewhere.
This is a vigorous massage, though you can request easy vigorous to what I would call an extreme massage where you're sore the next day, but everything that ails you has been exorcised.
I'm usually in good health (knock wood), but pulled my lower back last week lifting weights.
I told Dana about it and she went to work. First, hot suction cups. This was my first experience with suction cups, and I was hoping she wouldn't next go for the leeches (just kidding), but I must say, that 5,000 years of Chinese knowledge counts for something. I felt the heat and blood concentrating in my strained back.
This made it easier for her to work me over, which included a back walk and Dana using her feet while positioned against the wall for leverage to deep tissue the hurt away.
See, I wasn't kidding when I said vigorous massage. But my back is good as new. Amazing results. Great service, super friendly, clean, well run, professional. Just don't expect Bliss Spa.
Ask for Dana or Lulu. The massage is an amazingly low $42/hour. Tip at least $20-25.
This is the best thing you're going to do all month.1 Previous Review: Show all »

I went to this place last week looking for a good, inexpensive massage and that was what I got. $42 for an hour + $20 tip.
Don't be scared off by the graffiti on the side of their sign that faces north... It's a totally legitimate place. The women are friendly, and my masseuse was excellent. She asked me what type of pressure I wanted, which was of course hard, and she went to town on me. She checked in a few times to make sure I was ok, and at the end she even put my socks on!
f you are skirmish about privacy, this place may not be for you, as you do have to undress without a dressing room. But the lights are dim, they hold up a towel, and there are partitions between the massage tables.
Well worth it - one of those things in NYC that you gotta take advantage of. I'll definitely be back there for many more! -

I swear by this place and make it a point to visit every time I'm back home in New York.
Between college and a lumpy mattress, everything below my neck and above my waist is constantly sore. Yet every time, the staff manages to make me feel reinvigorated (after beating the crap out of me, mind you). I only wish a place like this existed in Ann Arbor. . .
Two issues: 1) The professionalism is not up to par, but considering how inexpensive it is, it doesn't bother me (especially considering how much I end up tipping afterwards). 2) The quality of the massage depends highly on your masseuse. Find your favorite and ask for them! -

Pretty solid and the price is right. However there is a slightly larger fee if you use CC to pay. The woman was strong, but as others mentioned I am sure there are better places out there. But for a quick 45 min session on a Saturday afternoon it is hard to beat. Can be busy...be warned.

magic hands...magic feet lol. This place is awesome, without a doubt the best pro massage I have ever had. Place is pretty unassuming and almost hidden but the staff there is very nice and the price for what you get is a bargain. Review from Jonathan W.

Incredibly unprofessional.
I've had many massages, and this one just wasn't that great. The kneading and such were too fast and hurried and not relaxing. Knots which made an obvious popping sound were ignored and not taken care of. But by far, what bothered me most about this place was the unrelaxing atmosphere. Throughout the massage, the women gabbed to each other loudly (like you might experience at a nail salon). At one point, one of the women even picked up her cell phone and had a whole conversation. It's impossible to relax with so much going on around you. Ridiculous. Also, the room was quite cold, and the music was too quiet to enjoy.
But the experience took a really bad turn when i paid and left a $4 tip on a $23 massage (representing a 17% tip). Considering that the massage wasn't that good and i didn't feel very relaxed afterwards, $4 was plenty. Well these women gave me HELL about it. She started ranting about how most people leave $8 or more. I'm NOT one of those people who can be manipulated and guilt tripped out of my money, so screw them. I stayed firm:"sorry, that's all i can give." Anyway, as they saw that line of argument failed to work, she starts telling me that i'm abnormally muscular (i'm not..) and that i required more effort. Ridiculous. Then, seeing that fail, another woman tried mentioning that it's the beginning of the chinese new year, and she shows me two twenty dollar bills as if to say 'most people give us a $40 happy new year tip'. It was really unpleasant -- i literally thought they were going to attack me and i'd have to fend off three strong-handed asian women! Perhaps the most disgusting part was that when my friend came out from the back to pay, having just missed the raucous caused by my 17% tip, they basically grabbed the money out of his hand and didn't even give/offer him change for his $30 (on a $23 massage). And he was too surprised and shy to say anything.
I had high hopes based on the many yelp reviews. When I entered the place, and saw the somewhat spacious interior and walls between the beds, and the towels used around the face-hole on the bed (a step up from the usual itchy paper towels), I was pretty excited. But the massage just wasn't great, and the employees were very unpleasant -- I certainly won't be back. And now that I look more closely at the yelp reviews, I see that five of them are almost definitely fake (the reviewers don't have real pictures and only 1 or 2 reviews).
I'd highly recommend trying this place instead:

I hurt my neck and back 2 weeks ago. Monday I hurt it again so bad that I could not even move on Tuesday. This morning I went here for a fantastic massage and I can finally turn my head again. She rubbed and worked not only my back and neck trouble areas, but every inch of me. You can't beat the price either. $42/hr. or $60 with a good tip. Great place.

Chinese massage is a specialty of SF. (Hail Wonderfoot -- boy am I spoiled.) And, this place simply doesn't measure up. The massage was weak!!! And, the service was rude. They spoke LOUDLY to each other in Chinese during my whole massage and I felt like I was being mocked. Don't know why. Also, they basically forced me to give them a $10 tip. I tried to give $6 and she said "no - $10 tip minimum"!!!!! The place feels sketchy. And they forced my mom to drink water - in a mean manner. I mean FORCED. Don't go!

This place was fantastic. The staff was courteous and very nice. I was having a lot of soreness from running and they completely worked it out. I guess they must have renovated since some of these earlier comments were posted. It's not an open room; the massage tables are in separate curtained rooms. The lighting is low and the gentle music helps you drift away into relaxation.

Awesome massage that I was sorely in need of. $42 for an hour, but I left $60 and thought she more than deserved the tip. The previous descriptions regarding the atmosphere are all accurate, and I will say that there was nothing "sketchy" about the experience. I got a great professional massage for a great price. Just a note though: the masseuse will put your socks on (sounds strange but it doesn't feel that way): mine had a hole in them and I was a little embarrassed. I will be back!

I got a 45 min massage. The place was decent, no one was in there, it wasn't as sleazy as I thought. However, this place is clearly a body rub place not Tuina. None of the techniques were of tui-na. I could have had my bf rub me down with oil for free then to go here. The only reason I went was because I thought I was going to receive Tuina techniques. Also, I had a credit card, no cash and the woman said since I am not using cash there will be $6 tip, which she soon followed up with a necessary tip. DO NOT waste your time and money if you want a REAL tuina massage. If you want a body rub, then COME HERE and expect to be hassled for tip and BRING CASH.

I went to 88 today and had a great massage from Dana. Qi Gong Tui-Na massage places in the city are typically a little "gritty", but 88 is nice, clean and well heated. The women did talk to one another while they were massaging, but it didn't bother me because I don't think the talking detracted from the quality of the massage. If you're looking for someone to just work out the knots and stress in your muscles, then Qi Gong Tui-Na massages are for you, and 88 is for you. If you're looking for a relaxing place where you're going to be pampered, then go to Bliss!

So I was really nervous. I've had a lot of massages and I was a bit skeptical. I have to say though, it was definitely worth the money. $42 /hr(cash) plus tax if you pay with credit card. Like all the other reviews, there's nothing special about this place, but it's clean and the women I dealt with were nice. I was the only person there this morning.
She excused herself to answer the phone and talked to the other person there too... but I really didn't mind. The overall feel was comfortable and very casual. I also paid $60 total including tip, because I felt it was worth $1 a minute.
Tui-Na I have discovered is really not that different from a swedish or any other traditional massage.
We live upstate so I won't be able to frequent the place, but I plan on bringing my husband back.
Remember to ask for the card so after 10 you get 1 free.
Great deal! Oh one more thing I went to the Whole Foods about a block away... so after your massage treat yourself to a healthy green drink. :-) -

This was the best massage that I have ever had!! Does anyone know where any of the employees are working now! They are the best! We all miss them!

great strong back rub by some chinese women serious about their trade.. however went today for a lunchtime destressing session and it was closed, looked at the sister location across the street and there were legal notices on the door indicating that the place had been shut down for unlicensed massage. remembered that there were state of new york licenses on the wall the last time i was there, but i guess they weren't legit. very sad.. will post again if i pass by and see that it reopened.
