I don't visit bakeries often but I say this place is probably my favorite bakery to go to. Sometimes me and my friends plan or just randomly go here to get some sea salt coffee or to buy some of the various baked goods. There are other drinks to get too but havent tried them yet
As for the pastries, it can be hit or miss depending on the time of day you arrive and what day you go.I really like the moonpies and this custard bread pudding (think thats what its called) thats always out when I get there. But every 15-20 min a worker will come out with a new tray of something to restock the shelves. So you might get what you want and other times you might not.
The line can get pretty long if you arrive when a lot of other people do. That's my only complaint about this place.
Overall I enjoy going to this place and all the other restaurants that are around it -

This is definitely one of my favorite bakeries in Irvine. Love their blueberry cream cheese croissant! I stop by here just to get a couple of these for me and my friends! Lots of variety which I love however parking can be problematic especially at lunch hours.
4 stars for the awesome bake goods and sea salt green tea!
-1 for the long lines and difficult parking situation.
Overall its a must try! -

Overrated. I don't get the hype or the lines wrapping around the strip mall. Cakes are bland the breads don't reach beyond what you can bake at home.
This places reminds me of how much Asian social norms blow. Constant pushing, cutting in line, reaching for breads with bare hands (and then putting them back on the shelf), sneezing and hacking without covering their mouths, children on the loose, etc. Not the bakery's fault, but the employees are too nice/busy to ask anyone to stop. Being here was one of few moments I wished I were white.
The store has a nice decor and cakes that look better than they taste are arranged beautifully through the glass. Too bad you won't be able to appreciate any of it beyond the horrible fan base. -

This place is quantity over quality I don't get all the hype besides the sea salt coffee which is pretty good. Go to cream pan!!

I came here after trying their salted ice coffee once.
Luckily when we arrived the line outside wasn't too long we did get in fast but once inside what a mess this place is, the line for bread is crazy and some people are rude and pushy so damn impatient. Then when they need to re fill the bread it adds more chaos making it more coocoo. Once we picked what we wanted out we waited in line to pay but before that we ordered the salted iced coffee. It did take a lil longer for the coffee but it was worth it. Once we found a place to sit outside we dug into the bag of breads...they were just ok nothing exceptional stood out for me. We got a pecan tart, that was ok. Then we had a raisin bread stick which too was ok and then we had a coconut cake its light and fluffy, not sweet and again just ok.
For coffee I'll be back thank goodness they have a separate line for that, as for the bread no thanks I prefer the Paris Baguette bakery and now they have one in Anaheim closer to me! -

Irvine, CA
This cafe is extremely popular and gets packed during certain hours and days with a line out the door. I like the interesting and eclectic assortment of baked goods sold here. For individuals not familiar with Taiwanese dessert, there are certain desserts served here unlike typical American or French dessert in that they are bread-based and flavored, but not nearly as sweet. If you order a coffee/chocolate pastry for example, it might have a hint of the two flavors but the simple taste of bread will be the overriding majority. There are exceptions. The custard-filled pastry is sweet and comparable to a custard cream doughnut. They are delicious and sell out quickly as the evening progresses.
Which brings me to my next point. If you come here closer toward closing they may have a much smaller variety of baked goods, and usually the best items may be sold out. -

I wanted to like this place...I really did. Particularly after all the hoopla. But I just couldn't quite understand what all the fuss was about. I took a look at the 'pastries' and honestly, nothing quite jumped out at me as delicious looking. I bypassed the pastries and decided to try their famous 'sea salt green tea' and an 'iced green tea milk'. Neither were overly fantastic or anything special. And even for a drink we ended up having to wait a good 10 minutes after waiting in the gigantic line. I'll likely never come back only because there was definitely nothing to write home about. However, I will say that their staff is very friendly.

Looking back on my five-star review for 85, I'm ashamed to say that I fell into the 85 hype that went around (and is still going on). Their bread selection is indeed different and unique, but if you prefer the traditional Hong Kong style breads, 85 isn't for you. They have rose bread, squid ink, mochi eggtarts, red bean mochi bread ... very weird varieties.
I do have to say that the brioche, garlic cheese and the sundried tomato basil breads are really good. The marble taro is good fresh, but if you eat it cold ... it's not great at all. I haven't eaten 85 in two years, and when I look at the long lines, I'm just thinking, "wow, I used to be one of those people!"
The berrytale and custard breads used to be really really awesome, but after eating so many of them, I've really stopped liking them. I find the custard to be too much, and the berrytale to be too sweet. I haven't tried the boba for awhile, but I do remember liking the jasmine milk tea and thinking the price to be pretty decent. Not sure if it has gone up or down. So glad I have stopped spending my money hear. Overpriced bread that doesn't even taste that great.Listed in: Boba!

just satisfies me every time when i'm there. i just don't like the long waiting line every time i'm there. But it sure is worth waiting! most of those rolls are still hot when you just bought them. Sooooo delicious! I buy them regularly, kind of like stock them in my house.

LOVE THIS PLACE!
Musts: Sea salt green tea, sea salt coffee, taro bread, and Japanese sweet bread.
Lines can be long but if you pick the right time (meaning not during mornings or lunch time) you should be fine. They tend to do a good job of moving the lines. -

Long lines sometimes but worth it to wait with friends! Popular tourist place esp among Asians ;)
Coconut twist is my favorite, blueberry cream cheese (berrytale) is pretty good too. My friends like the taro bread too.. you cant miss it, it's a giant purple loaf.
My mom describes the breads as delicious but something you should only have every few months or so, and I would agree.. super rich and sweet. Worth a try! -

There's not too much to add that other Yelpers haven't already said, so I'll just add my solid 4 stars!
The buns are fresh, delicious, and oh so tempting. We ended up buying almost one of every single thing they had to offer and BINGED over the next hour on glorious carbs. I loved the rose bun with the cream cheese on the inside, especially since we ate it warm. The crust on the egg custard tart was perfectly flakey. My friend loved the blueberry cream cheese pastry. And all of us loved the brioches bun, which is HUGE, moist, light, sweet, and delicious.
We washed it all down with the sea salt coffee (which was too creamy for my friend) and the sea salt jasmine green tea, which I loved.
Then we stumbled away complaining of how disgusting we were before coming back the next morning to do the exact same thing all over again. -

A bit on the pricey side, but very delicious.
It could be because I haven't had Chinese pastries in a while, but these were very delicious! It was so good that I had bought a box of pastries, but only had one since my family just went and ate it all! They also agreed that it was very good.
I would definitely come here again despite the long wait out the door! -

A lot of the baked goods and cakes here are so-so, but they definitely nail a few items:
-taro bread, duh.
-rose bread (the only one that's as soft as taro)
-brioche bun
-most the salty stuff
-iced coffee and jasmine green tea WITH sea salt foam
You'd definitely want to come here super early to avoid a line. -

Los Angeles, CA
The wait in line without getting coffee.. three stars.
..but if you're there for the coffee and breads.. 4 stars..
even if youre there for just the coffee it's worth 4 stars.
Sometimes when the line's too long for the bakery I just go to their secondary line (which is usually really short) just to order their coffee.. their coffee is pretty good.. both their 85C coffee and sea salt coffee are something I might become obsessed with.. If you like jelly.. add the coffee jelly to your drink.. yumm.
bakery wise.. all of the breads I've tried here are good.. some more unique than others..
you'll find your usual asian bakery goods and also some random ones.. such as the taro bun or the rose cheese one.. I have yet to be disappointed by 85C. again.. if there's a wait and you just want bread you might not be satisfied.. so go for both their drinks and baked yummies..
..i have tried their cakes once or twice.. they are quite good.. theyre pretty much the same as any other asian bakery cake.. -

I really don't know why everyone and their Chinese mother raves about this place and WHY oh WHY--God forbid--there is always a line out the door that stretches all the way to Yogurtland.
For the simple gal like me....all I want to do is go inside, grab my 2-3 egg tarts and be on my way, all within a matter of 10 minutes, tops. That's what would ideally happen in a perfect world. But NO. We live in a world where Asian people hoard as if the Apocalypse is going to happen tomorrow. People come here and load up 3 or 4 trrayful of mountainous pastries and tie up the cash register while the employees are fumbling to package the goods and box them.
The only thing I really like from here are their mochi-based egg tarts. They are not your average run-of-the mill, lard-laced dim sum egg tarts. This stuff is really mouthwatering and indulgent! The crust is so flaky, buttery, and you can tell that it is baked to perfection as you sink your teeth in for a bite and your lips and clothes become coated in a small layer of flakes. And that, ladies and gents, is about as good as it gets.
That is my "must-get" item from this bakery whenever I feel an intense craving that needs to be satisfied. Other than that, I do like their Tuna Danishes. But be careful not to hoard because if you eat two in a row, you can feel a bit queasy from all the grease.
All the other bread and pastry items are decent, but they really aren't anything to write home about. I feel as though you can get them at any other Taiwanese/Chinese/Japanese bakery, really. It's as if these people have never tasted bread before--crazy, I tell you!
Anyway, the cakes here really do suck and they pale light years in comparison to Paris Baguette cakes and the petite cakes you can get from Portos and Bottega Louie and...I can name about another twenty of my favorite bakeries/patisseries, but I won't do that here. 85 cakes are really forgettable. I can only manage to stomach a bite or two because the cream and texture just doesn't scream out "AMAZING--OMG TO DIE FORR!" at me. *shrug* It's just blah.
OH, and just thought I'd throw that this out there....
SEA SALT COFFEE IS A SCAM. IF YOU HAVE EVER TRIED VIETNAMESE ICED COFFEE, IT IS BASICALLY THAT, SPRINKLED WITH A PINCH OF SEA SALT ON TOP....SO REALLY, IT IS NOTHING OUT OF THIS WORLD AND THERE IS NO NEED TO GET YOUR PANTIES ALL BUNCHED UP ABOUT IT.
The owners of this establishment are just clever. They simply made a small modification to an age old traditional Vietnamese beverage and ran with the idea. The TIMES may love it, but I'm not really impressed.
**Disclaimer: In case I got you all riled up, I am of Chinese heritage, so I am allowed to make the comments that I did without being labeled racist. K thanks!** -

So many goodies here, I don't know where to start. Just get them all. Though the lines may be long in the morning & lunchtime, they move pretty fast. Some of my favorites are the taro bread, Japanese sweet bread, and just anything sweet really.

Strawberry Panna Cotta: http://www.yelp.com/bi...
You ABSOLUTELY have to get the sea salt Jasmine green tea & sea salt coffee though, they are AMAZEBALLS! Add boba to them and you get the perfect boba drink. The sea salt just really play with your taste buds, the drink is still sweet but also the salt makes it savory and the sweetness of the drinks stand out even more. This place is perfect for road trips, just stock up on the pastries and drinks before you're off on your drive. -
Review from Mitch W.
It's interesting to me that there used to be an 85C Bakery in Alhambra that I never went to, but after that one closed, many of my friends were raving about this location and the one in Hacienda Heights, so now I've been to both of those locations and never went to the one that was very close to my house. Haha.
The bakery breads are excellent. I had the giant brioche and it tasted to me like pineapple bread at other bakeries, but 3 times bigger. Other items were excellent as well.
I'll definitely be back when I'm in Irvine more next year visiting my nephew, who will be a Freshman at UCI.

Was in the area, and was excited to see that 85c was open until midnight! Was looking forward to some steamy taro bun deliciousness, but they were all out when we got there at around 10...
I don't know. If you're going to advertise to be open until 12AM, your specialty shouldn't deplete until at least 11. But that could just be me going through taro bun withdrawal. ); (Although by the dwindling line outside, most of their other customers agreed.)
OVERALL:
I love their taro buns, but not enough to blindly excuse the long lines in the AM, and their misleading late-night gimmicks.1 Previous Review: Show all »

D'you know what I find hilarious?
Every other Yelp restaurant rave receives around 300-500 reviews. But if you're in relation to a Chinese establishment you get like 3000 reviews. Face it! The Chinese are taking over the world.
I say we should rate ethnic restaurants based on a curve. There are 1.3 billion people in China. There are 50 million Koreans. Let's make it fair. For every Korean restaurant that gets 50 Yelp reviews... it should be on scale equivalent to 1300 Yelp reviews on a Chinese restaurant. That's the only equitable way. They outnumber all of us. This is like ethnic restaurant affirmative action. But instead of white people being the majority... the yellow people are! Haha!
Oh yeah! And by the way... this place is pretty good... did I forget to mention that?
Sorry! I'll get off my soapbox now! -

At first, I couldn't understand why there's always a line no matter the time of day. So I got in line and waited for 30 minutes. The result: the pastries are always fresh and it is very tasteful. The salted coffee is ok. I am not much of a fan. You could always find a table outside to sit and just relax. The only negative, again, on a hot sunny day, is the long wait.

Quick update base on their cakes...:
I gave 2 stars cos their cake not the worst I had but not the best I had either!
1. Chocolate truffle cake: Tooooo Rich! Even I like DARK Chocolate, it just take two bite and start to feel tried of taking a third bite!
2. Mango creme brûlée: This cake Is 97% of Sponge cake, 2% of Cream, 1% short of what they called mango mousse!
Overall, REALLY, SERIOUSLY! WAKE UP PEOPLE.... THEIR CAKE WEREN'T THAT GOOD EITHER! I HAD BETTER FROM "JJ BAKERY"! Cakes look good doesn't mean always taste good!!...
STOP THE HYPE! And what's up with the music in there, it get too loud neither the customers nor workers can hear anyone talking in the store! And I was waiting by the drink area also for the cake order side, Ive been waiting for 15 to 20 mins try to stop a worker to stop working and ask them for help! How in the world they don't even had a worker stand by the cashier to take order?! NO, THEY'RE ALL TOO BUSY TO TAKE NEW ORDER!!...
There's no reason for a cafe/bakery make their customers to wait over 20 mins for anythng! That's my biggest problem with this place!!1 Previous Review: Show all »

Hard to say anything that hasn't been said already, but I'll confirm that it's always worth the wait here. I've been lucky the last few times. . . No real wait, but that's because I was here at an odd time, like 3pm on a Sunday afternoon. It can be daunting, knowing what to pick. There's so much to choose from. One thing my kids like to get when we're here is the hot dog wrapped in a pastry. Interesting. I think the best thing for me is that brioche filled with custard. To die for. I also think that squid ink bread is a very interesting savory alternative.
They've got boba type drinks here. I've never had one, but people seem to line up for them (a separate line to the left btw). Not usually a long wait for those.
You can also buy a very reasonably priced and beautifully designed cake here. -

Over rated. The coffee is OK bur the breads- taste wise are a hype. Can improve their service to shorten lines for bread.

Review from Fanny H.
Solid place for your Asian bakery goods. I hear lots of good things about the Taro Buns and fresh loaves of bread. Unfortunately, there's not a huge selection of baked goods (with lots of shelves of the same pastry), but still good nonetheless. Apparently, the most popular breads sell out quick and they aren't made everyday. That can be annoying if you come here specifically for something and wait in line only to find out that they don't have it for the day.
This place is also good for drinks. Most popular item is the Sea Salt Coffee (Iced), which packs in a good salty kick. I recommend that you shake it up otherwise the froth and salt just stays afloat on the top. Their Green Milk Tea with Boba is really good though, I love that I can taste the TEA more than the SUGARED MILK. Good stuff.
Lines aren't so line and move really quick! Nice place. -
Review from L C.
Westminster, CA
Seriously? I don't get why there is a freaking line here ALL the time! The pastries are mediocre at best... especially considering a lot of these things you can get at ANY Asian bakery. On top of that, parking at the Jamboree Plaza is atrocious and the parking structure always smells like vomit and piss.
The only thing that is somewhat worth coming for is the sea salt coffee... but then again, I would NEVER wait over 5 minutes to get coffee... Asian coffee espeically.
Tips:
Come first thing in the morning when they open. It doesn't get busy until after 9:30AM. Besides that, avoid the place unless you are a fan of waiting in line and wasting precious time. -
Review from Tom T.
In comparison to the branch in Rowland Heights, this one is PRETTY small. By small, I mean there's not much room to wander around in the store to find the pastry you want, or to figure out what kind of drink you want.
The same general idea here, though. Just that, I wasn't too wowed about the pastries. I believe the main reason was that I found two Korean bakeries in the same plaza, therefore, I rather just try something there instead of here, when I can easily get a better variety.
I do give them props for being able to deal with long lines quickly.
I only grabbed the Sea Salt Coffee, which is the same as the Rowland Heights one, except the drink was a little less salty. -

The line here gets very long. Come at times that aren't peak unless you want to wait in at least a twenty minute line (depending on who is taking their time inside).
The cakes and pastries are very delicious and light. They are not too sweet. The coffee does taste a little watered down (at least the sea salt coffee). Not a fan.
The prices here are great. I load up a tray and never pay more than $15-20 (food will last me a week or so). -
Review from Phoebe C.

Whoa, I can't believe I haven't written a review for 85C yet! In actuality, I think it deserves 3.5 stars... so I'm rounding down. Why?
Cons:
-It's attractive at first due to the hype and attention it gets, but after a few trips you realize it's way too over-hyped.
-Super long lines. Like a moth to the light, 85C attracts swarms of Asian people. Oft times, there's a long line just to get into the bakery.
-"Fresh bread!" I get it. You have fresh bread. I admit it's semi-catchy too. But borderline annoying, since they do it EVERY TIME something new comes out of the oven.
-Pretty overpriced. Bread seems cheap at $1.50-$3 a pop, but get a few and it quickly adds up. You can easily spend $25+ here on bread and tea alone. And the cakes are at least $30+.
Pros:
-I like their hot mountain green tea. I feel like a centenarian when I drink it. Did I mention I love green tea? They have cold and hot teas, as well as coffee. Try their sea salt coffee, which they're known for.
-My favorite pastry is the chocolate bread with chocolate on top. It is so good! Very very chocolatey.
-Whether you're craving sweet or savory, they have the pastry to suit your needs. The tip is to buy a ton, freeze what you're not going to eat, and voila, you can have "fresh bread" for over a week. Also, for all you Asians out there, it's sweet but not as sweet as American pastries (which is a good thing).
-Unless you live in Irvine and/or attend UCI, it's a bit out of the way to drive all the way from North OC (for me at least) just to go to 85C. So I only go here when I happen to be in the area. -
Review from Simon C.
Irvine, CA
This place is a favorite for a quick breakfast, the next day. I wouldn't recommend coming here if you're in a rush since the lines are, on a good day, around 10+ minutes wait; so if you do see a chance, come in and stock up for the next morning [you can reheat in the microwave or toaster and you're good to go]. The breads and pastries are a good bang for your buck but seeing the long line, I'd pass and wait it out till another day. The line lets sections of people into the bakery if the line is long but quickly gets crowded and a lot of people are soon shoving past each other just for bread! The employees at the register are fast and polite, pretty good considering the rush they go through daily.
Favorites would have to be the sea-salt coffee, its a different sensation for my taste buds: a blend of sea salt sprinkled on the cream and bittersweet coffee. -
Review from Anthony P.
Antelope, CA
Heard about the ridiculous long lines that come out of this tiny bakery, so I came here way before lunch hour rush. Compared to the one in Rowland Heights, this place was tiny!
They didn't have the French cheese bread I was there, and they said it would have been a hour wait. Also, for some reason, the milk butter raisin bread here was so much better here! There was tons of filling, and I was quite happy. This and the mochi egg tart, which isn't overly sweet, are my favorite. I also tried the coffee creme brulee. It's actually more of a cake than a real creme brulee. Cake and frosting are both light and moist, but I didn't really find the creme brulee part. It was just OK overall.
I got a chance to try the sea salt coffee this time too. Wasn't as salty as I expected, but it's very fatty and rich. My aunt is a huge fan, as she comes in and buys like 6 at a time to keep at home, but I still prefer the Jasmine green tea because its so light and refreshing.
This may be a small bakery, but I sure knows how to keep a ton of their customers happy! The only bad thing are the lines during peak hours. Maybe they should try to expand, but keeping it small will only increase demand. Smart move, 85C Bakery. -

I think the bread variety outshines the beverages. I tried tried the green tea latte and the sea salt coffee is good here. But the bread is better here than in the rowland heights location in my opinion. Things to get:
mochi egg tart
berry tale
egg pudding bread -

The place is still choatic crowded, random and unorganized as it can be, but its a hot mess though! In my recent visits, i have found out how tasy their 85c Coffee Bread that has red bean and mochi filling, really is! I am kind of addicted to it seriously!
My second favorite is the taro bread. If you are a first time visitor, note that taro bread is kept behind the counter, as they dont want you breaking the delicate nature of taro bread with your silver claw. You have to ask for it! every bite of it is divine!
I am not such a big fan of their coffee.Listed in: My Neighborhood

Ok before you 85C fans start bashing my review, hear me out. I grew up on pastries from Korean bakeries and to me they taste better...and the lines aren't ridiculous. I've had a few pastries from here and nothing was special and I prefer pastries from Paris Baguette, Richmond Bakery, and Cake House.
I also got the green tea and BLEH it was NOT good...and it took 15 minutes to receive. I wanted to see the hype, saw it, and won't come back. It gets too claustrophobic up in there and I think this place is way too hyped up for what you pay for and have to deal with. -

If you get past the crazy line and all the crazy Asian moms buying out all the trays of fresh bread, I recommend trying the taro bread (it goes QUICK) and the cheese bread with the hot dog is my favorite. For drinks, the green milk tea, sea salt coffee, and sea salt green tea are on point (if you're buying just a drink/cake, skip the line and enter through the entrance on the left!)
Other than that...TOO much hype. Yes their bread is good when it's fresh and yes they have a lot of fancy cakes, but I really think this place is just jam packed everyday because it's the only bakery of its kind in the Irvine area.
I can't believe people wait in that long of a line just to get some bread and the selection in my opinion isn't all that great either. The quality has definitely gone down since it first opened and the workers aren't as friendly. Overall, don't waste your time if there's a line that goes all the way to Yogurtland... -

When you first come here, dont expect a simple 5 minute wait. Most of the time the line can extend wrapping around the nearby stairs. Expect to wait a good half an hour during peak hours.
But if you make it past the line and brave the crazy customers. The food here is pretty bomb! I always get the pork sun buns, cheese bread, taro bun, blueberry bun, and the hotdog.
Dont be surprised if you see people come out with brown boxes because that seems to be the normal amount in which people buy here. -

There's not much I can say about this place that hasn't been said! While it seems to be a bit high on the trendy hill, I can't help but enjoy myself everytime I get a taste of this place!
The Jasmine or Mountain Sea Salt drink was way bomb, just don't forget to shake it! And the cakes are amazing with the a large assortment of hot teas to pair. Anytime I eat nearby, I can't help but stop in to grab a small something for myself or the mrs. :)
