Luckily, 7th Avenue Books seems to do well, despite the huge Barnes & Noble across the street. I've had good luck at 7th Avenue Books finding rare titles (old Lawrence Block mystery novels, etc.). The staff has always been friendly each time I visited. From what I hear, they also compensate well for your used books. I'd absolutely recommend 7th Avenue Books over the Strand as far as used bookstores.

Possibly the best small used bookstore in the city, 7th Ave Books has a wide selection of used books with rapid turnover, as well as a selection of new books focused on the hip reader.  If you're an avid reader, a membership at $25 per year gets you an extra 10% off the already good prices.  There's even a small graphic novels section hidden next to the register, a welcome rarity in a used bookstore.  Well worth a trip from whereever you may live.

Always an enjoyable browse, 7th Avenue Books has a friendly staff and a wide and oft-changing selection of books at reasonable prices.  While the location is physically small, they manage to hit that delicate full-but-not-cramped balance, just like a good used bookstore should.  Well worth a visit if you're in the neighborhood.

One of NYC's genuine used bookstore.  The books here have that really good used-book smell and feel.  The only thing is, being kind of small, the selection isn't quite as big as some stores like Strand.  So don't come with a list.  But you'll most likely find something really cool and interesting that you'll want to buy anyway.
