I can't say enough good things about 718. The collaborative build process is a great concept that would be almost impossible to experience through a traditional bike shop and much less through finding a bike on Craigslist.

I now own a one of a kind bike that I helped design and build, and because I was part of the build process I know enough about the mechanics to do a lot of the maintenance myself.

Working with Joe is also a pleasure. He's a down to earth and all around good guy that knows what he's doing but doesn't have any of the attitude that you find at so many local bike shops. He really wants you to have a bike that you'll love and ride.

This place is totally worth all five stars.

Specialties

We work on making vintage bikes new again, by Appointment Only.

(repairs/conversions/upgrades/paint/advice)

We are not a bike "store" in the retail sense, we are a bike "shop" in the sense that we work on bikes.

Has your dad ever told you about the times he took
apart the toaster or the famly radio as a kid?

In terms of consumer products, those days are
long gone.  If you even think about opening your
Ipod, you will void the warantee.  Most products carry
a warning about "no servicable parts inside", or are
protected by fasteners that require security clearance
and a expensive tool to loosen. Products are made
so that replacement is far easier than repair. We
just throw them away.

As we all move towards becoming information workers,
(folks who work at nice large firms, sit in front of a monitor,
and produce nothing you can touch), the desire to
work with ones hands becomes magnified.

Meet the Business Owner: Joe N.

I got "into" bikes after mine got stolen.

With great encouragment from my friends at Team Lope (www.teamlopecycling) in SF, I decided to build a bike
to commute to my job as an Architect on Wall Street.  3 things hapened:

1. While building in my front yard, my neighbor asked "do you sell those?"
2. I found that getting hurt and filthy was a great counter-balance to my double-monitor desk job
3. My wife told me that if I build any more bikes, I have to get rid of some

So, here I am...waking the neighbors up on Sunday mornings to the sweet song of my Dremmel, going to work
with black findernails and knuckle scrapes.

I do what I do without arrogance or attitude, and run my shop the way that I would want my family to be treated.
In adition to the day job as an Architect and the bike thing, I also teach at Pratt.  I think that the 3 of these gigs
really round out my teaching/creative/mechanic life.

Thanks for having a look, it is greatly appreciated.
