We like coming here a lot. We always order the Chef's Tasting Menu with wine pairing. Servers are friendly and constantly checking up on you (which is nice). Portions are good. I highly recommend this place :-)

71 St. Peter is really a gem in the middle of downtown San Jose. I've been going here since the mid-90s and the food and service are always spot on.
The menu changes with the season. The hearts of romaine salad (always a staple on the menu) is really good. The lamb, pasta, and seafood special are great. Save room for dessert.... the warm sour cream fudge cake is another staple on the menu and is the perfect finish to any meal.
The wine list is extensive so partake in the pairings on the tasting menu or better yet, bring your own bottle.
During the summer, they open the patio doors to have outdoor dining. It's a great way to enjoy the warm summer night or cool off for lazy lunch.
I love this place even more than I did before because my fiance proposed to me here at my favorite table. This place has a special place in my heart. =)

For now 2 stars.
Let's start with five and do the math.
Five at first for an interesting menu and decor.
Then let's review, shall we?
-1 for taking nearly ten minutes to seat me and the restaurant is 1/4 full. The guy that said it would take a minute did 20 other things before he sat me down, when every other patron seemed perfectly absorbed in their own conversations.
-1 where I look at the menu and see it's exorbitant for lunch. 18-24 for an entree. Well, only if it was a power lunch and I was expecting 1/2 the assets of Trump. Yes and the best part? 8 bucks for bruchetta. It better be magical and have bling on it.
-1 where once I was seated and had decided on just soup, i put down my menu after 2 minutes and acknowledge the host. He nods. I think, okay it will be now. Don't they know that most people's lunch is an hour? Dude, it's just soup!
Well, I waited for 15 minutes and no service-except for bread from the busboy, which I didn't touch.
That's 1/2 my lunch and no food.
So I got up and left.
So for now 2 stars.
I'll think I'll try dinner and see if that's any better.
Don't come here for lunch, unless you are a hedge fund dude.

First off, I have a trio group I go out to eat with on a seasonal basis, so we were looking for somewhere new to explore last night and because of Yelp (thanks for that), we came across this restaurant. Unfortunately, 71 Saint Peter "Mediterranean Grille" was not the Mediterranean we were expecting. Also, we did not read the disclosure at the bottom of their website stating that the menu online was a sample menu only, since one of the very reasons why we chose this place was because we were dying to try the tasting menu they had posted on the site, as well as some of their appetizers (ahem, the artichoke in particular).
So anyway, we arrived at the restaurant, only to find out the menu was different from the one online, and the things we wanted to order we nowhere to be found. Still, we decided to explore what they had to offer. We decided to forego the spring tasting menu and order a la carte. I needed a drink.
First, I ordered the sparkling wine to start. They only had one choice by the glass, but it was a very good one at that. Dry, but a hint of sweetness. I had to say, their wine selection was very dear to my heart. To start, I ordered their Bruschetta, made with all kinds of extra things that I personally have not put in my Bruschetta, nor in the Italian traditional sense of Bruschetta, so I wanted to try it. It was very tasty, topped with caramelized onion, marinated artichokes, sun dried tomato, basil and the one thing that caught my eye, goat cheese. Good flavor, though I would rather have enjoyed it more, if the entire bread was spread with the goat cheese, rather than just a smidge of it as a topping.
The verbal special happened to be the filet mignon wrapped in pancetta that I had my eye on when reading the sample menu on their website. I ordered that, just after I read about a maple glazed top sirloin. Fortunately, one of my trio parts ordered that.
I also ordered the Ceasar salad. Great flavor from the cheese and dressing. I especially was quite fond of the anchovy that topped it. I would definitely have like more of the anchovy, and cut of the lettuce a little further, rather than serve it wedged. What was interesting about the salad was the flaked fried garlic chips were a nice touch. They looked similar to the shaved parmesan, so it may altered my mind a bit, thinking I'm eating a nice piece of salty parmesan and ended up crunching onto some garlic.
All of this food was washed down with a nice 2004 Markham Merlot. Good meal.
nothing special. went for brothers bday. pork chops were bomb! everything else was whatevs. oh yea, bread was awesome. i would go somewhere else.
This place has always drawn me in like a baby boomer near an indian casino. What the hell does that mean? Well, there's potential here, and I've gotten lucky on several visits and had some of the most exceptional service and food I can remember.
Unfortunately that wasn't the case last night. I can't exactly knock them for seating us next to an insanely loud man, but they could have cooked my dates steak correctly, and could have told me my salad was going to suck and could have brought out a desert that was actually tasty.
To avoid problems: check the website, look at the tasting menu and decide wither or not it appeals before even calling them for a reservation. The regular menu items are very hit and miss and no where near the caliber of most of the testing menu items. Once you get there, pray that you get a table in the front of the restaurant (the back is more crowded). Order the tasting menu, be prepared for a long evening and if all goes well, it will be wonderful.
Why gamble? Well, it's romantic, one of the best gourmet restaurants in the area and is reasonably priced.

I have been wanting to try this restaurant for while now and finally went last night with my boyfriend and another couple. Cute romantic ambiance, good wine, service was just OK - speedy but not very cordial. The bread basket was just ok, nothing special, and I do feel that the bread sets a precedent for the rest of the meal...sometimes.
My stuffed chicken was pretty good, the peppercorn steak was tasty. They have a Spring Tasting menu for $32 which might be worth trying next time we go. Overall, good romantic place for a warm, comforting dinner.
Truly a hidden surprise!! Located at 71 St. Pedro St - hence the name - this has been a place that my husband and I have walked by several times on the way to Sharks games and said, "some day we have to eat there...". Well we finally did and it was very good! The food was wonderful and the spinach salad as a starter was excellent! The owner was there and ended up serving us for part of the meal, which was a treat as he was friendly and told us about the restuarant, etc.
The menu was excellent and they had a decent wine list. It's a must visit and we will definitely eat there again!

My husband I love to eat here. We have never had a bad meal. For a real treat, try the Chef's Seasonal Tasting Menu. It's always fun and usually includes some items I wouldn't necessarily order on my own paired with great wine. The owner is usually present, and always stops by to chat. I've taken business clients there and they have raved. It's a little pricey, but the atmosphere and the food make it a great place to go for a nice treat.

I would love to have given this restaurant 5 stars, but they were just a few things that were less than spectacular last night. It's true Valentine's Day is a hard night on restaurants and I'd like to return to this place to try their tasting menu on a normal night- because I've heard it's wonderful.
The atmosphere was nice, tables are not too close together- although we were seated next to an especially loud and obnoxious couple- thankfully they left when we were half-way done with our meal. We were seated immediately, no wait with reservation. We were greeted and waited on by the owner himself- he was helpful without being over bearing. The bread was good and I had the spinach salad which was divine. I mean how can you go wrong with pears, pecans, goat cheese, spinach, olive oil and a bacon dressing :) My date was less impressed with his basic green salad. For a main course I had the steak- which was tasty although a bit over cooked on one side (medium does not mean charcoal). The steak was served with some very garlicky mashed potatoes, and the best part- fresh green beans. The only downside was really the long waits between courses and the desert. I love chocolate so I was drawn to the Sour Cream Chocolate Fudge Cake- but the cake itself was dry and lacking in flavor and fudge.
Overall I think this restaurant could be fabulous if you select the right menu items. I've heard the tasting menus are normally the best choice- unfortunately last night they were heavy on the lobster- so I decided to pass (I know I'm weird but I don't like shell fish).

3 and 3/4 stars in reality. Difficult to get a table ; While the dining space is (very?) small there was I sitting next to a boisterous group I could not even hear my date talk. We asked the waiter to let them know but, alas no such luck it really was a bummer.
The food and wine paired perfectly and while I have had the tasting menu and saved money in the past this time around I found the pairing to be more pretentious then tasty.
Wish I could say the wait service is consistent but it ebbs and flows like the school year.
I may continue to come here or just save my money because while a $126 bill isn't bad I am not going to put up with a noisy group like that again and ask for the manager.
Let's just say I wish I went to Left Bank instead.

This is my favorite place for a cozy, intimate meal. Ideal for date night. The food and service are superb. Dishes are always wonderfully presented. They have a nice selection of wines and offer a tasting menu for around $35 which is a great value. I've never been disappointed with any meal I've had here.

I met up with a couple of friends here for dinner this week. They were from out of town and staying in the south bay so I took the lead to find a place in San Jose. According to Zagat 71 St. Peter is a 23 on food. 23 on the Zagat scale is pretty good. Anything from 24 to 26 is very good, and beyond that is reserved only for special occasions. So I was looking forward to a pretty good meal at 71St. Peter.
I got there first and was seated quickly (Tues night). The server was very friendly. The place is pretty big despite what some people have said. And there is a patio area which is nice. Decor is a bit rustic, kind of dark and quaint.
The 3 of us split the crab cakes and a insalata caprese for apps. They each got our own entree. I ordered the almond crusted halibut. All the dishes were well-presented. Unfortunately all of them were lacking in taste. The crab cakes tasted stale and much more like fish than crab. The salad was good but nothing special. And the almond crusted halibut, though large in portion, was very small in flavor. I ended up putting salt and pepper on it a couple of times. Not that it tasted bad, it's just that it didn't taste like anything, not even halibut!
At the end, without any wine, the bill came out to about $30/person including tip.
I found this to be a nice place for good food without a pretentious setting. It's in downtown, so parking in the city garages is free in the evenings. The experience was fine, service was good, food was good, and overall a very reasonable value ($32 for prix fixe menu). You can find my pics of the prix fixe I've uploaded, basically you get everything except you have to choose between the lamb/halibut. I had the lamb and was happy with my choice, can't comment on the fish. The only downers, were the dessert was a bit lacking, and the interior decor didn't really appeal to me, but overall a good value and fine meal.

Great little place. I usually stop at the Tied House and don't venture 2 doors down but it was worth the extra walk.
Nice wine selection. I had champagne. Beer selection needs work.
The prix fixe menu is good
gotta run will write more later
I would go here again if I ever went back to San Jose... which is rare.

I've been here several times and have been VERY impressed every time. It's a nice, quiet, romantic setting with excellent food. Ok, so i don't know how ALL the food is, but their chicken stuffed with spinach is VERY good! They apparently are very selective with their staff because every waiter we've had has been very good at their job. This place is perfect for a date because you have a great atmosphere, the portions are just right, and the service is great. I'd recommend an early dinner (before 10pm).

I've enjoyed lunches and dinners here for a number of years. Most recently, spouse and I had dinner early before a hockey game. We specifically wanted to try the late winter tasting menu and were delighted that it was still offered. Started with ahi tartare, progressed with gorgonzola polenta, then a nice sorbet. He had a beef dish that he liked; i had a paella. Then a scrumptous bread pudding for dessert. We also had the wine pairings, which were very nice. We liked each dish and thought for the price it was quite a deal. Enjoyed good service, liked watching the passersby on a busy Friday evening, and overall had a good experience.

I've passed this place many times and never had any desire to eat here, but when the group I was going out with suggested it, I was up for it because we always have such a good time together, it doesn't matter where we eat. I had no expectations and so the restaurant was fine. The room is a little dated and a little too theatrical looking. The service was attentive and professional - and our waiter was very cute. We were there on a Monday night at 7:30 and the restaurant was about half full. We tried to order a cocktail before dinner, but they only serve beer and wine. The wine list was not very interesting, but it was affordable. The server recommended a wine that we all enjoyed sipping and with the food.
We decided to go for the 4-course seasonal tasting menu. We started with a roasted vegetable "tower" that was tasty. The beets and eggplant were especially delicious. Then came the smoked duck breast raviolo, which was too salty I thought. I chose the salmon entree. It was wrapped in a light pastry and baked - a little too long if you ask me. It was cooked through and dry, but the berries on the plate added a nice flavour and the needed juices for the dish. The seasonal dessert was a chocolate macadamia nut "meltaway" and it was fair. It was served warm and was slightly molten. The blood orange sorbet on the same plate was much nicer. The coffee was terrible. It was like IHOP coffee - what's the point?
I wouldn't recommend this restaurant and don't think I'd go back, but my mild curiosity about the place has been satisfied.

I ordered the Spring tasting menu, without wine paring.
The meal started with a simple bread basket, containing 3 types of bread. The rosemary focaccia bread is dense and nicely perfumed with bits of rosemary. The french bread with poppy seed crust was also quite tasty. I did not try the plain baggett.
The tasting menu starts with a short rib salad with arugula, white and green asparagus and a meyer lemon dressing. The slight bitterness of the arugula played off the hint of sweetness in the meyer lemon dressing beautifully. The white and green asparagus are not dressed, but simply blanched so they are tender, but not soft. I think the white asparagus is slightly sweeter, but both are quite good. The short ribs is a little tough, but well grilled and have lots of flavor. There were cheese shaving on the dish, but I though the salad did not need that.
The second course is the spring vegetable risoto, served with 2 grilled artichoke hearts. Again, the grilled artichoke hearts have a nice smokiness that brings out the sweetness in the spring vegetable rissotto. There is supposed to be smoke gouda in the rissotto, but I was not able to detect it.
There was a lime sorbet between the rissotto and the main course and it was nicely tart with bits of lime peeling in the ice. Very nice.
For the main course, I ordered the poached halibut with new potatoes in broth. The fish was just cooked through, flakes easily, but still has some firmness to it. The broth is a white wine base broth and has taken on the sweetness of the fish. It was quite nicely done.
The dessert is a short cake, topped with gelato and mixed berries. The dessert is not very sweet, which I appreciate, but the short cake is a little tough, which I did not. There was pieces of strawberry, raspberry, black berry and blue berry all over the plate, which help keep the dish not too sweet.
My dinner companion order the special lentil soup and seafood linguine. I did not taste either of the dish, but did get a good whiff of the seafood linguine. The place was piled high with scallops, prawns, clams and mussels, and the scallops look like they are cooked through but not tough.
Service was a little off when the wait staff question my dinner companion several times if she is done with the pasta, wanting to serve me dessert. When she finally finished dessert, I had to flag the wait staff down to remove the plate.
Portions for the tasting menu is a little small, even with four courses, I felt I cound use a little more food.
The food quality is good enough to warrant an extra star, but I was thrown off by the servlce.
I went here after reading all the nice reviews.
The salmon was really nice however the tilapia sucked. the place is nice and there is free parking but all in all not worth the money
Went here on NYE... we were seated in half an hour (we spent the time at the nearby Irish pub). The ambience, food and service were all excellent.

I would really like to rate this place with 5 stars but my last trip there was so/so. My best friend and her bf double dated with us on my birthday. I had been raving and ranting to her about this place and sort of felt like the tasting menu could have been a little more exciting. We had asparagus soup which was delicious but the second course wasn't that great. It was seared/ceviche style halibut that had too much salt in it. The main course was fabulous (lobster tail) but my fiance tried the meat selection and it had a little too much fat on it.
Overall I am eager to try their tasting menu every season so I will wait till Fall and review again. I did add the wine sampler too and that was very nice. I had mostly all white wines that night.

Met my friends here for dinner before heading to the HP Pavilion. As the restaurant was crowded we got seated in the the back room. At first, one of my friends was like, "The back room? Are they trying to hide us?" But it worked out for the best, as the main dining room was loud and busy. While the area we were seated was almost like a private seating area, with less noisy. I enjoyed my meal. I had the Mixed Baby Lettuces, soup of the day, and the Herb Grilled Pork Loin. The soup was could have been served hotter. The pork loin was very tasty due to the Au jus. Overall, the dining experience was good, but i think it was the company of my friends that made it work.

This is supposedly a fantastic restaurant but... they need to work on the side dishes (no taste), but the meat was excellent, possibly one of the best filet mignons we've ever had. They had a nice prix fixe menu (4 courses + an entremets) for a meagre $30... throw in an extra $15 and they'll pair wines to each of the courses. And we're not talking about your basic skimpy Parisian serving, but a GLASS OF WINE (read... FISH BOWL). Overall nice experience, we'll come back, but not necessarily for the food...
PS: our waiter was awesome, he didn't charge us for the Icewine ($15 per glass !!!!!) even though we winged a bit about the side dishes...

Good Food and Good Atmoshpere
I enjoyed eating at 71 Saint Peter and will return sometime. The resturant has a nice cozy feel and I enjoyed the food. We had a table 6 on weekday night and had no problems getting seated but the place is more suited for parties of 4 or less. I had the prefix menu and it was very good for the priced. I sampled the other dishes in my party and I enjoyed all of them and we all agreed that the portion size wss good too. The negatives of this place is the service and the long wait between meals. It's almost like the waiter is to good to serve you and when we were served wine and there were spots all over and asked for clean wine glasses, he was annoyed that he had to come back. Until they get better service the best I can give them is 3 stars.
Delightful little restaurant. I loved the atmosphere and friendly service. The ingredients combined to form wonderfully tasty entrees and desserts. The staff was eager to serve you and were more than helpful with the wine list which was also quite impressive.
HORRIBLE EXPERIENCE
If anyone wants to watch Hells Kitchen Live, I recommend coming to this place. We are talking about the food that comes at the very beginning of the show when the pork taste like paper, the salad is underdressed, the seafood is overcooked. A friend and I came in for a nice dinner...we should have eaten bar food next door. It would have tasted better.
The chef was angry because the restaurant was so busy and he had to keep cooking... wait isn't that his job. To cook! The food was slopped onto the plates. Not presented. At first we thought it was fun to watch but after waiting 45 minutes between the salad, the humor was lost. We overheard the waiter asking the chef to give them something to serve. We overhear the chef yelling at the waiters. By the time our plates came out I had no appetite. That combined with the fact that the Paella tasted like it came out of a box. Disgusting. I would never come back to this restaurant. Poor food, poor service bad all around
We had reservations for a dinner date on a weekend night.
My first impression when I walked in, was that the place was darker than I expected. The entryway was very dark. I'm glad we didn't have to wait for our table, which was in the main room.
So, we actually both got the mid-winter tasting menu, but with different entrees. First course was the winter vegetable tower. Second course was the smoked duck breast raviolo. This was followed by a sorbet (it's listed as passionfruit on the menu online, but tasted like mango to me). for the main course, I had the puff pastry baked salmon, he got the veal. We finished off with dessert, which was macadamia nut & Grand Marnier chocolate melt away cake, which was served with a scoop of raspberry sorbet. We opted not to get the wine pairing that went with it because the last time I got a tasting menu with a wine pairing, it ended up being way too much for me to enjoy (OK, so I'm a light-weight). Instead, we each got a glass of wine. The food was quite good. I wished that they had left a copy of the tasting menu with us because as the courses came out, I forgot the details of them. We also had decaf coffee & tea with our dessert. Service was very leisurely, which was what we had wanted (plus he said that he eats slow). One little glitch was they brought out the two salmon main courses initially, but after the error was mentioned to them, the veal came out pretty soon after that.
So, on the way to the bathroom, I noticed that there was another room in the back for dining, which looked small enough that you could book it as a private room.
The bathroom was clean, but out of toilet paper. Good thing they still had seat covers! Granted, it was late in the evening (they had started rearranging the tables around in the back of the main room by us & presumably setting them up for the next day by the time we left), but still! Apparently, the back wall of the restaurant is shared with a club next door, as I could totally hear (& feel) the bass going when I was in the bathroom. Good thing they don't seat people for dining way back there.
Located on San Pedro (thus the name of the restaurant), a block off Santa Clara. Someone needs to explain to me why they call it San Pedro Square, though...it looks like a street to me, although I've only been down that way at night, so maybe I'm missing something. There's a parking garage right across the street...free after 6pm & on weekends.

I have heard good things about this restaurant. Every time I passed by it always looked so quaint and cozy...it looked like a place where I could get a nice bottle of wine with my scrumptious dinner. My boyfriend and I came here a couple of months ago and we found that the food was flat out boring. The foie gras appetizer was cold and the flavors did not meld. The prix fixe menu did not impress me at all. The service was slow. There was a long wait between each and every course. At then end my boyfriend had to get up to go find the waiter just to get a check so that we can get the heck out of there! Let's just say that we won't be coming back again.
Mediterranean cuisine
I've had mixed outings here the times I have been. I had a great pre-fix with wine flight and the pairings were incredibly wonderful and then recently I went here and had the pre-fix and wine flight and was dissapointed. The recent dissapointment was with Buffalo as the main course and it was tough and chewy. I guess it is hit and miss and it isn't cheap when you miss!
what the hell happened?! this place used to be pretty consistent and though it never knocked my socks off..it was still plenty satisfying and i'd be willing to go back. but now i'm not so sure.
our office holiday luncheon has been here for the past 3 years. they have a nice private room that fits our group of about 20 very nicely. 2004 and 2005 were great. 2006, however, was lacking.
the good: appetizers! bruschetta, pumpkin ravioli & crabcakes. we had a bigger selection in years past..but these three did the trick. desserts were also scrumdittlyumptious and they're generous with their portions..monstrous creme brule and white chocolate rasberry cheesecake were fabo.
the bad: salad was severely under-dressed and close to dry. my filet was also near raw. i like rare meat, but this was mushy. not cool. it was also missing the schmear of blue cheese. boo. also, i didn't think it was possible to fudge up mashed potatoes, but they did.
the ugly: service! we had about 3 different servers but i still had to ask for a refill on my water 3 times before getting anything. not so cool when my tongue is drying up from the oversalted mashers. food service in between courses also lagged. granted large parties are a bit more challenging to serve, but we never had problems in years past, so i think it's fair for me to be a little critical, ne?
