166 reviews for 6th Avenue Aquarium
I probably would not purchase anything here based on other reviews but they have a big assortment of coral and SW fish. I went here on a Saturday and it was freaking crowded. I think most people just look at the fish and don't buy anything.
This place is only for your viewing pleasure. 8-)
Depressing, but with a high variety of fish, especially saltwater, that can be hard to find elsewhere. Be warned, many of these fish are not healthy, I've heard that some are illegal to sell (from other fish store owners), and they also sell fish that have been "inked" to form patterns on their scales (these are on the 2nd floor). I would not suggest buying fish here, on moral reasons.
What I would suggest is going to the 2nd floor (stairs on at the back) and checking out their large aquarium and stand combo prices. Definitely the cheapest I've seen anywhere, and a large (if dusty) selection. For the new hobbiest, I would stop here to check out tanks at low prices.
For those who complain about the quality of the livestock here and on craigslist:
The owner @ 6th commits to a huge number of new fish from the transhippers. He and his employees dont have the time to quarantine, dip, and treat new arrivals. Your more "ethical" and "conscientious" local fish store has much less selection and for those with better selection like aquarium concepts I dare you go in the am as they open and I assure you will find as many dead fish as "sick avenue aquarium" as u bashers like to call 6th ave.
Be prepared to rescue livestock and properly acclimate and dip.
(YES! acclimate THEN dip) Buy only on Friday and saturday once the new fish arrive.
Speaking of awful treatment of fish... you havent seen how the transhippers deal with fish before they get to your dearly respected LFS.
The bag lot stuff on Sunday is SURPLUS from the transhipper that your dear respectable LFS would not pick from that place in San Bruno so be doubly prepared for a rescue and de-parasite operation.
For those who have copious amounts of $ and dont want to go through to motions of acclimating and dipping I would discourage you from buying livestock @ 6th avenue. FOr the budget conscious, your efforts in maintaining a quarantine environment will be rewarded.

6th Ave Aquarium is no different from… Read more »
GO HERE INSTEAD, YOU WILL NOT REGRET IT: http://www.yelp.com/bi...
Not only do they treat their fish inhumanely, but I am utterly convinced that they do not know ANYTHING about how to treat or care for fish. They actually told me that salts won't do anything to help my goldfish. I relayed my sick fish's symptoms and they told me to use fungus cure - a treatment that eventually ended up killing my fish. I know this because when I brought my then very ill fish to another knowledgeable fish store owner (see above), he brought out medical textbooks to show me why they were so wrong. I spent days trying to nurse my sick fish back to health, and even resorted to hand feeding him, and sadly he could have been healed if I had received proper information.
Tattooing fish? I mean, really? Disgusting. Also, I plan on doing further research into some of their sales practices and will be reporting them to local animal control groups. Fish are living beings and should be treated as such. If my suspicions are correct about some of their practices, I will be asking local authorities to take appropriate legal action.
Shameful, shameful, shameful.
Has anyone taken the time to report this store?
Smells like Fish.
I really wanted to write a good review for this place given it's late hours, self-service approach, and for providing a generally colorful and unique San Francisco experience.
However...
It really is a pretty sad state of affairs. These poor fish are treated as mass commodities, not living creatures. Not a single fish that I have "rescued" from this place over several years has survived for more than a few days. What's worse, by introducing one of these stressed-out fish to a healthy aquarium, you're putting your own healthy fish at risk through the potential of disease.
If you truly value your fish, try Aqua Forest Aquarium, Ocean Aquarium, or Albany Aquarium in the East Bay.
The full name of this store is 6th Ave. Aquarium & Flowers. Yep, a florist and fish shop in one location -- though it seems like they run their operations separately.
First of all, the florist in the front... lovely selection of orchids here. I found a very nice, very tiny orchid (probably about 5 inches, INCLUDING the stem) that I bought for my favorite crotchety 90+ year old man. These orchids are not cheaper than those from Trader Joe's, but TJs is hit-or-miss and this place seems to always have some decent orchids in stock with more than one stem of blooms and many closed buds, ensuring a longer enjoyment period before the plant goes back to its dormant stage.
Then, the aquarium. This side of the store, I've got very mixed feelings about. There were some obviously dead fish in the tanks; it would stand to reason that the staff should clear the dead fish out BEFORE the store opened. On the flip side, man-o-man, the selection!!! There was a wobbegong SHARK inside the store (which could be yours for the bargain basement price of $299 -- in fact the running joke in our family now is... "well, it's cheaper than a wobbegong." or "heck, it's even more expensive than a wobbegong!"). There were also tiny shrimp, even a few lobsters, snails, this fish that had legs (forget the name), and more. The salt water varieties seem more varied here.
Instead of paying $200+ for family membership to the CA Academy of Sciences, my family should just keep coming here to oogle the variety of fish! However, based on the other reviews, I think I'd hesitate before actually spending serious money here.
Ehhh..Trying to figure out what to say..
I've been going to this place for about eight years now and never once have I ever been greeted by the gentlemen at the front counter. The only "Hi." I get is from the girls working at the flower shop in front.
3 Stars for a mixed review. I have had healthy and unhealthy fish from 6th Ave. The fish are cheap. They sometimes carry real nice oddballs. Sometimes it looks like they're smiling at you and they WANT to greet you. But hey, at prices that low, why not give them the extra stars!
How do these people get away with such awful treatment of fish? It is so sad. They basically cram tons of beautiful fish into these tiny tanks. It like fish jail. Not ok. Look carefully and you'll see a dead fish in nearly every almost every other tank. And who knows how long they've been there! Imagine hanging out in a house all day with a dead rotting human laying around.
What really set me over the edge was when I saw the shady upstairs larger tanks. Imagine huge fish the size of fish you'd see at the Monterrey Bay aquarium packed into a tank so small they hit each other when they swim. Someone please tell me how they get away with this. Its disgusting.
I used to come here all the time when I was a kid and didn't know any better...
This is by far the worst fish store I have ever walked into. In my opinion, a fish store should stock their tanks accordingly, to make you look at their tanks and say "I want a tank that looks just like that!" Yeah, no. Dead fish in nearly every tank, large or territorial fish crammed in small cube tanks (think 5+ arowana and 25+ cichlids), and overstocked tanks. You name it. The only reason you think their koi and goldfish are okay is because the turnover is so high. Although their prices are rather low for the most part, you're better off going to a store that really care about their livestock and not risk having your fish buddies die because of diseases.
Oh and by the way, don't bother trying to go upstairs. The stairway is tiny. The walkway on the 2nd floor is a joke and really unsafe especially if you have little ones that play around. Last but not least - customer service? What customer service? Bag your own fish, and just bring it to me! Don't bother asking questions either.
This place has a huge selection of both freshwater and marine fish as well as many of the things you'll need to both set up and maintain your tank. Their prices are extremely competitive and coupled with the large selection, make this place tempting to get your fish from. However, these positives must be tempered by the fact that they seem to focus on high volume traffic of fish through their store (new fish on Tuesdays, new plants on Thursdays). As a result, conditions are abhorrent - over-crowded, tank set-ups are very stark without sufficient cover for fish to hide behind, lots of larger fish (of the more aggressive variety) being housed individually but in cramped tanks... you get the picture. I'm pretty sure that I brought ich back from this place. If you approach pet ownership from the perspective of sustainable and humane animal practices, then you should avoid this place. But if you just want a place to get cheap fish without the warm fuzzies, you'd be hard-pressed to find better.
6th Ave has been getting a bad rap from people here and truthfully enoug,h some of it is true. So here's a quick ref guide what to buy at this place.
Dont buy the Goldfish here. It is crapolla it will die after a few days from pinecone disease. Some of the freshwater fish are good, especially the hardy ones like Oscars, Parrots, Various Cichlids and Tetras but really keep an eye out for white spot (ick). If one guy has them ALL of them have them even if its not visible.
Buy only hardy saltwater fish here. Although they have a really good wholesaler the water conditions in their tanks are crap. Best time to get them is during shipment days of Tuesdays and Fridays. Sometimes they would even work with you on the price since they don't have to acclimate the fish. Talk with Coleman, he's very helpful.
Same thing with Corals if you can get it a few days after delivery or next day you won't run the risk of a dead coral after a few days in your tank.
Be careful of the Sunday bag lot since the fish do not come from a reputable wholesaler. I suggest triggers only since they seem to thrive better. I've bought a few triggers that have lived for a long time during the bag lot sales.
The main problem with the store is the whole bag it yourself rule. I see lot's of kids here touching the fishes water and banging on the tanks. In fact I heard one parent say ''this place is better than the Steinhart since you can touch the fish''.
My advice to the DUMB PARENTS that come here and let their little kids touch the fish, some of them are poisonous and some have barbs on their tails like Stingrays. It won't be so cute when little billy gets stung by one of these species. This is a store not a fucking petting zoo.
With all that said, this place is not bad. You can get good deals and the staff is friendly and helpful. Don't be intimidated by the hip hop music and semi crowded isles.

This store has been judged too harshly. If you know about fish- this certainly is the best place to… Read more »
Disgusting! They need a ZERO Star rating.
It's pretty much all been said in the reviews, but I want to lower the rating of this revolting shop.
I really want to give myself a low rating for giving them my money. When I saw that they were selling a remora (!!!) I should have marched right out. When I had to stick my hand in a tank and get my own plants then net my own cherry shrimp I must have been out of my mind. I've learned my lesson for sure.
The shysters working here (shame on the racist comments on this review board, btw) failed to tell me that they were selling me poisonous, copper-laden tank gravel. The two cherries I bought here and the two I already had (who were hearty little dudes) promptly died.
The people reviewing this place to say "they have pretty flowers" and "fish are entertaining to look at" are promoting the cruel and despicable treatment of fish, inverts and whatever other (probably illegal) aquatic life they can get their hands on. I don't begrudge a business for wanting to make a profit, and I don't think chain pet stores are superior to locally-owned businesses. But this ramshackle crap hole is horrendous. Take some pride of ownership and stop treating LIVING CREATURES with such disdain!
If you want to have an aquarium put in the extra effort to not cheap out patronize this vile place.
I personally wouldn't patronize a pet store that did not care for the health of the animals. I know it's a business and they're out to make money but the condition of the fish are borderline sell-able. Go to Fairly Lake if you want healthier fish albeit not as good a selection as 6th Ave.
We bought two aquarium lights here and put them on a pair of 55 gal. tanks. Our setup was extremely common; nothing unusual about it. We then had two major house fires, six months apart - both started by the aquarium lights, according to our insurance company's fire analysis labs.
I'm just saying.

I wish I could give zero stars to some places, like this one. This place is Fish Hell. It's like… Read more »
This place is awful. I moved to San Francisco from Texas two years ago. I had a simple tank with hardy fish. I managed to move all my fish in a large tupperware with a battery-powered filter in the cab of a Uhaul halfway across the country in August, and they all survived. A couple months later, I get a plant and a couple of fish from 6th Avenue Aquarium. Within a week, every fish in my tank had died a horrible death.
The customer service is non-existent, the state of the tanks is deplorable, and like many have said before me, the fish will die and take everything else down with them.
not known for their customer service. they do have lots of supplies and lots of fish. just make sure that you know what you want and have done the research on what you need before coming in and buying anything. the prices here are reasonable.
Been going here for years. It's my go to spot when I want a fish that is hard to find.
The first time I came here was when a friend told me about it. He said they have every fish you have been looking for but couldn't find. He was right.
He also said the dudes in the store are a bunch of usless rice-rocket racers.
Regardless this place has tons of fish, they don't hassle you, and the prices are way better than anywhere else.
So maybe this place is for experienced fish hobbyists. I buy fish with a simple rule, always look at all the other fish in a tank and if you see a dead one, sick one, or one with a little white spot on it don't buy a fish from that tank.
There is a huge selection of fish here! The downside is that there are a lot of dead fish. I saw a dead shark in one of the tanks last time. The fish are relatively cheap though, but I don't know how long they will survive. I'd probably come here mostly for the aquarium supplies such as tank, food, etc. The dry goods are priced pretty good for most of the products.
Basically everything that can be said about this store has been said, but here are my 2 cents.
1) Yes the fish are kept in too small containers, im not an animal activist or anything, but 30+ clownfish (who are very hardy) in what i presume to be a 20-25 gallon section of a tank is kind of ridiculous. Especially since you can see these fish dying. If a clownfish is dying constantly it means big problems.
2) Remember all the water in alot of the tanks are shared. what that means? well if fish 1 gets a disease, every single fish sharing water with that that fish number 1..is exposed to it...think about it...especially when you buy an expensive fish.
3)a lot of the tanks are Chinese made i believe (that is why their dimensions are soo off compared to standard). all that means is, dont buy a big tank unless you are planning to be freshwater from them.. their 10 gallons etc are ok on the contrary.
4) they do not sell egg crate or any plumbing supplies. (what they do sell in the category is not sufficient)
5) their miscellaneous supplies are cheap. eg pumps, filters and so on..get them there, no problem
6) do not buy corals from this place...end of story..
7) if you are new to the fish world, go to lucky ocean aquarium
8) if you are experienced at the hobby, shop here, no problem, you will know how to find a good deal.
9) they do have a nice little flower store out front
summary. this place is ok if your an experienced aquarist, otherwise just dont shop here and waste your money. all those fish are attractive, but remember there is a reason they have all those fish..its either quality or quantity in the hobby...and there is a very very fine line betwix the two.
Honestly, I do adore this place. The selection is fantastic, the prices can't be beat, and you can pretty much get everything you need here.
I've had great luck with corals and inverts (stars, snails, crabs).
The fish, really, are a hit or a miss. My very first fish, Nemo (yes, his name is Nemo, don't judge me god dammit), is still swimming after 3 years. The prices for fish are tempting but I have to say that unless the fish is incredibly hardy, it's just not worth it. I've had a much better success rate with Tropical Reef Aquarium on Taraval (100% so far!)
Take home message: 6th Ave. is fantastic for dry goods, food, and other such things. I personally love purchasing a coral for $19 that another aquarium cells for $60. The fish I just cannot in good conscience recommend.
Hm, it's too bad you can't give negative star reviews. I'd be all over that.
I've been keeping fish, and reef keeping long enough to know this place is SO not happening.
Golly, where to start, where to start ...
Poor quality of fish, with a high turn over rate (not the good kind; mortality rates are through the roof).
Lack of caring on behalf of employees.
Employees are anything but friendly.
NO customer service.
Tanks are overcrowded beyond belief.
Fish are being kept in a big water system, so all the tanks are connected ... if one tank has a disease problem, they all do.
People catch their own fish; countless people stick their hands in the water, with cologne, lotion, perfume ... poor fish.
Walking upstairs is a joke; go and see for yourself.
The way this place treats their fish is straight up unethical.
Dirty tanks.
Bag fish sales?
I saw a blue ring stingray in a tank low enough a kid could place his hands inside?!
gtfo 6th Ave.
And I am only getting warmed up.
The prices are low. But for the quality of livestock you're getting, you'd may as well suck up those extra couple bucks, and go to another LFS. Yeah, neon tetras are only $0.50, but you've got to buy 4-5 to get one to live. Be smart. Do not endorse this LFS.
My girlfriend wanted to buy me an aquarium and some fish for Christmas. We decided to go to this place since she'd heard they had "good deals". Well, we got a nice little 3 gallon aquarium, gravel, some plants and three goldfish for a good price. Being that we knew nothing about fish and tanks, we trusted the two people who were working the counter. They told us that a 3 gallon tank was good for 2-3 goldfish.
Well, we've now had the fish for about 48 hours and they seem very erratic in the tank. We did a little research and EVERY SINGLE article states that each goldfish needs at LEAST 10 gallons. So that means that we should've bought, at a minimum, a 30 gallon tank for three goldfish. Instead, we have a 3 gallon tank, which means that death is on the way.
We have been completely ripped off. What a disgrace.
lowest prices, lowest quality stock.. my saltwater fish always die from them. Don't like buying bad fish stock. Equipment is good if you know what your looking for. The staff has a attitude, and they don't even know that much about fish. They like to think they do. The Ghetto Gangsta rap is a bit much to listen to while your trying to look around.
I used to get feeders here, because my dad knows the owner and such and such..
Now, my boyfriend has a "friend" that works here so we can't go which sucks cause he doesn't want to.. so whatever. My mom before she goes to temple comes to gets flowers, I on the other hand want a new fish.. I'm waiting for my boyfriend to buy me a new fish. :D So, it can swim around... yay something like that. The fishes are in very compact spaces, you can choose your own but they have like 10000000000fishes in a 32 gallon? & sometimes I feel like their arowunas have no spaces to swin :[ poor babies. I remember buying a 100 gallon from here for an arowuna I used to have.. but then now its just lingering in my basement waiting for a new home :[
Oh 6th Ave Aquarium and Flowers.
Thank you for saving my ass on many a Valentine's day.
But why won't you put fish into my flower vase?
I came here after dinner @ the nearby Singaporean/Malaysian restaurant for a stroll.
They have a big variety of fishes on display, and the cascading salt water tank system in the back of the store is amazing! The display here is comparable to a section at the aquarium museums.
Obviously due to space limitations they don't have a lot of large species, but the small creatures they carry are amazing and unique in their own.
Definitely a good place to hangout for a while if you pass by Clement street.
Not a good place to buy fishes. They let people net and bag their own fishes. But I wouldn't want to buy a fish that's been poked and stressed out by all the people before me. The tanks are dirty and I saw several dead fishes in there. Seems like the owners dont really care about their health. They have some painted fish, which is a horrible idea. All the fishes look really lethargic. I think they will soon die after you buy them.
On the plus side, some of the equipments are cheap. I would go here for the stuff, not the fishes.
It maybe unfair to give this place a 1/5 rating. They have good deals on supplies and on aquariums.
1/5 because the fish are kept in very unprofessional conditions. Its unsaniary, dirty, overcrowded. The dead fish float in some containers (they dont keep fish in aquariums exactly)
Half the containers I looked at are contaminated with parasitic Snails that are hard to get rid of in an aquarium. Everything is overgrown with all sorts of algae.
This means that if you buy a fish here its most likely going to have parasites or diseases like Ick, fungus, or what not.
This is not about cruelty to the fish because , I mean we eat animals every day. But its simply not safe to buy fish here for your aquarium. They may or may not die, but they will give your aquarium infections and parasites.
Once, again they do have great deals on glass aquariums, though.
Fun to walk through. Sunday 10am sales (last very shortly--- there's a line for the limited items). I think there's a lot of disease in the water systems, but it's better than paying to go to aquarium by the bay or something.
I walked in an I was amazed at all the variety of fresh water fish and salt water fish! All this for really low prices!
But..then I realized that everything is cramped. I see like 20-30 fish struggling in a 3 gallon tank. There were a lot of dead fish and diseased fish in different tanks. Beware of what you pick, this place is self-serve when choosing out your fish.
The owner's are not very friendly but definitely helpful. As in so helpful that they keep suggesting you to buy everything for your tank. I know one of the guy there acts like he woke up on the wrong side of the bed.
It would help to tell people that green spotted puffer fish live in brackish water.I bought two green spotted puffer fish. My puffer fish,AAA, died the next day I got it. It's only a matter of time before the next one, AA, leaves me. Yes, I named my fish after batteries.
This place does have a lot of interesting fish and sea creatures, but I don't agree with the whole tattooing fish thing. I feel bad for the puffer fish that have to live together in such a small space. These are aggressive fish, not schooling fish.
I haven't had bad luck with my fish so far, as many others have... so I can't say I hate this place or love this place. This place was the only place I found Panda Corydoras and LIVE brine shrimp. They're doing great! I also bought 5 guppy fry (baby guppies) and they are doing great .. one appears to be pregnant.
This place is more like self-serve. They let you net your own fish. Which you can imagine trying to fish out guppies....! I spent over 15 minutes trying to catch fish and no one asked me if I needed help.
So I guess you REALLY need to do your fish-keeping research before coming here, and it's up to your instincts to judge whether you should get a fish or not get one. They don't really know much about the fish they keep, so it's really your job be knowledgeable!
I got my first fish when I moved into my apartment. Place was small and full of stuff, but all places in SF seem to be. Unfortunately my fish faced a demise like all my others in year's past. This time...suicide. Some people kill plants, I tend to only be toxic to fish. If my luck ever seems to change I'll definitely check this place out again :)
I CANNOT STRESS THIS ENOUGH: DO NOT BUY ANYTHING FROM THIS SHITHOLE OF AN AQUARIUM. IT WILL COST YOU DEARLY!!
Do not buy anything from this store!
You will contaminate your tank with ick and beard algae and everything will die!
A friend of mine told me he once bought fish from this store and it ruined his tank. I should have heeded his words.
I bought some fish here two weeks ago for my beautiful 55 gallon planted tank. All the fish I had bought from this dump have died of ick (despite trying to treat it). Also some of the fish that were already in the tank have died also.
Moreover, the tank is now infested with beard algae. I am trying to treat the tank with chemicals to remove the beard algae but I am not hopeful. I probably will have to rebuild the tank from scratch.
Basically, the fish I bought from these assholes killed my entire tank. And yes, I say assholes because I called them up and described my problems to them and they rudely accused me of improperly managing the tank (I wonder if the punk ass little bitch I spoke to would be so rude if I were standing there in front of him - I think not).
I don't understand how a tank that is perfectly fine for over a year suddenly dies after putting their fish in it is my fault.
Stay. Away.
Update 6/19/08: Every single fish in my tank aside from 3 coreys has died of ick. Before I bought fish from 6th Ave the tank was perfect.
Within just two weeks, beard algae has taken over my tank and I've had to throw out $100 worth of plants not too mention the hours I have spent draining the tank and will spend rebuilding the tank in the future.
I CANNOT STRESS THIS ENOUGH: DO NOT BUY ANYTHING FROM THIS SHITHOLE OF AN AQUARIUM. IT WILL COST YOU DEARLY!!
All my fish died from ick! Terrible Salespeople, Horrible Business, It should be shut down. Their tanks look like the ones at a dirty chinese restaurant, where the sea bass are all lying on each other screaming help "eat me, please".
The best fish store San Francisco ever had closed, it was called Nippon Goldfish and was in business since 1911 in San Francisco. It was run by the Murata's who always took pride in their fish and customers. This place, 6th Ave, only takes pride in taking your money.
Just don't if you care about animals at all, you will not suport this store it looks like evrything is sick, dead or dying. their corals are drab and their fish are dull allways swimming awkward and in over populated tanks.
this place is what a pet store should not be !!!!
they have you catch your own fish, and charge an arm and a leg for something that is about to die.
Whether you have fish, you want to have fish, or you just think fish are cool, this store has to be the most amazing hidden fish zoo ever. Tucked behind a flower stand on Clement just a couple of doors up from Toy Boat Dessert Cafe, walk into an amazing aquatic wonderland of colorful saltwater and fresh water fish, spread out over god knows how many square feet, with an upstairs and a downstairs.
Holy shit is that a shark? Yup. Whoa - is that a real puffer fish. Yeah. OOOOOO - moray eels!
I have yet to buy anything there, but I've walked through it dozens of times just ogling all the nifty sea creatures.
Customer Service for the most part sucks, just sucks. I was helping my girl's brother move a 30 gallon tank once, and those wannabe-racers did not even show up to help until AFTER we moved it down that hazardous set of stairs.
As for their fish, it's almost ironic that the two fish I bought from them is still alive. But then of course, the catfish I bought are a lot more hardy than the tetras my friends bought. Over 50% of the neon tetras they bought ended up dying soon after they got it.
Update #2-
Walking into this aquarium no longer makes me want to purchase a fish.
It does make me want to purchase a grill and get hyphy to the loud rap music they play and change my name to "Shorty".
There are multiple dead fishes floating amongst the live fishes and that makes me sad. Also, I want a pet waterdog.
http://www.erdingtonaq...
More importantly, I want to buy all the waterdogs from this store and set them free before they die of neglect or get killed in a drive-by.
UPDATE:
Masta died today 3-15-06 RIP :(
Origional Review (5 Stars): 10-2005
I got my Beta Fish here, Masta. Masta Beta...get it?
Masta is still alive after 2 years so that has got to be saying something about the quality of life that comes out of this place. Masta sometimes floats around in his bowl without moving and everybody thinks he is dead but he's totally just sleeping!
I used to shop here because it was the only shop that had live worms for my amphibians. I thought it was a nice place with fish and all sorts of aquarium stuff, but then I realized they sold amphibians as well. Newts, frogs and other little guys. Cool right? Except the fact they mixed breeds, and over populated tanks to the point of a lot of die off. EVERY TIME i went in there, there were dead animals in the tank. That's not right. I know if it doesn't have fur, it doesn't have feelings right? Well frogs and slimy guys don't like to die either. This place sucks, they care nothing about the animals, it's run by a bunch of 20 year old guys who really...lets be honest, are just there to make a buck.
Don't be fooled by the fancy fish, this place is trash.
