Review from Crystal C.
Wake Forest, NC
I visited 604 West Village on a Triangle Food Tour, although I enjoyed so much food that I feel like I had a full meal.
First was just some bread and oil. Simple but crusty on the outside, so so soft in the middle.
Next we had a tomato, mozzarella, and pesto appetizer that was so refreshing and tasty.
Then, my favorite, Grandma or "Nona's" Pizza came out. This was the group's favorite as a whole because it was crispy and solid but so moist from the cause of macerated tomatoes and tasty cheese.
Last we had a seared sea scallop over a risotto- like grain that had a lovely smoky quality.
I liked the atmosphere of exposed brick and big, wooden tables. I think this is a place I would like to sit and have a glass of wine and a nice dinner. -

*Update 5/22/2012
I was contacted by Sean, the owner, regarding out experience. He was very apologetic in his email and extended us an offer of a free visit to change our opinions. I am updating this review to 2 stars for now, and will update it again after our next trip.
*Original Post 5/10/2012
We visited 604 West Village in a party of 4, before a show at DPAC. We made a 5:15 reservation and were the only table in the restaurant for about 30 minutes. (Of course, the next table that showed up was sat right next to us in a completely empty restaurant).
Our server didn't seem like a good fit for this restaurant, definitely did not fit in. He was unable to answer the very few and simple questions we had about the menu. The menu itself was small, very simple and seemed to have many seafood choices.
At our table we had the Wild Boar Bolognese, it was reviewed as being decent, and not gamey. My MIL had the Daily Fish Special which was Trout, she was not impressed at all. My husband had the Chicken Saltimboca, he said it was less than good. I sampled it, it was very bland chicken wrapped in bacon. I had the Filet, this was the biggest complaint. I ordered it Medium Rare. The filet looked like a great cut of meat. It was the size and thickness of a baseball. The outside of the steak was great initially, but a centimeter in, the steak was beyond rare. It was sent back to the kitchen to be cooked a little more. About 10 minutes later, the steak was brought back exactly how it left the table. Our server disappeared for about 10 more minutes, then came back to inquire about the steak. We told him that is was still not right, and very rare (clearly due to the thickness of the meat). Our server made no effort to correct this or offer any discount on the bill.
The ambiance was nice when it was nearly empty, as the restaurant got to about half full, it was pretty loud due to the walls all being brick.
All in all it was a very mediocre experience and not nearly worth what we paid for it. We will not be back. -

Went here on a Sunday night and it was pretty empty. Had the Grandma's Pizza which was fantastic--ingredients tasted really fresh and I could tell the cheese was of a good quality.
I loved the brick walls (I'm a big fan of West Village's style in general), and the low lighting was great too. Service was surprisingly slow for how empty the restaurant was, but we weren't in a rush so it worked out. -

I've gone here a number of times and have enjoyed what I've eaten each time. I think for a lot of people.. Italian/Italian-American food is practically comfort food. I've had the lobster with cognac sauce and one other dish (I usually switch off between the two), but I have enjoyed both. I'd stay away from the Salmon option as anyone I've been with that has ordered has wound up feeling sick.
The are a pretty open space with dim mood lighting and parking isn't totally tricky but can be limited. That being said this is not what I would call a fine dining place. It is fairly casual. The staff can be somewhat slow and fairly aloof, but not stiff. -

I was here recently for a large party dinner.
Food: Had the fillet and a Caesar. Both were tasty, but the steak wasn't even close to the right temperature and the lettuce wilted.
Service: Slow and not overly friendly, not the worst I've ever seen.
Atmosphere: Great, I loved the exposed brick and dark comfortable feel of the restaurant.
Parking: It can be a real pain. The lot behind the restaurant often resembles a mosh pit with cars jammed in every spot and against every curb. Parking on the road is rarely available in a well lit area.
I'd probably go back. -

I liked the space, it's pretty secret, tucked inside the West Village apartments complex. It has high ceilings and exposed brick. I called them before arriving, because I was surprising someone who was there and was not expecting me in town. I had it all coordinated, except what I was going to do with my luggage. The person on the phone was really understanding and helpful. She took my luggage as soon as I got there and put it safely in a back office for me.
We used a groupon as a group, but I felt like our waiter was really judgmental about that and the fact that the three of us wanted to share various plates as opposed to each ordering our own entree....sue me for being close with my friends! :P Anyway, the table service overall was not so great...and the food, wouldn't go back for it. We had a goat cheese salad, a pasta with eggplant and a chicken marsala. Beautiful space, but the gourmet factor still needs a little work. -

This review is for 604...This is a beautiful restaurant located in downtown Durham. Sometimes it's hard to qualify what is the "X-factor" for restaurants. This place has all the makings of a primo place but for some reason it lacks chutzpah.
First up, the ever essential bread basket. I love it when bread comes out of the oven warm...this bread, although reasonable tasting, was cold. Just didn't have that "made with love" flavor that even chain restaurants can usually muster.
For appys we tried the mussels and polenta w/ garlic and mushrooms. Both tasty- the mussels were pretty routine though good wine sauce. I do love a well-done polenta and I must say that the shroom and garlic topping was delish.
Main courses were chicken marsala & pork milanese that came with roasted potatoes and sauteed veggies. Both were good- not terribly memorable.
I wish 604 well...it has potential but currently lacks the makings of a 4+ star restaurant.1 Previous Review: Show all »

Really great food...packed house this Saturday night. Had the perfectly cooked filet mignon, with the hand picked salad ( fantastic) and finished with the tiramisu . Love the diverse menu, and of course the cool- ex - tobacco- warehouse location. Cinellis and company has really taken this up a notch.

I was lucky enough to help assist a co-worker in checking out 604 West Morgan for our company's holiday party (um, free food? Absolutely I'll go.)
A little bit of a tough location to spot off the street, which worries me for its future. Great patio and an absolutely stunning interior with the exposed brick and beams of the days of Durham yore.
We stood at the host stand for several minutes while the kitchen staff watched us. Not the best first impression of the service. Our host appeared out of nowhere and whisked us to a table; there were only two other tables with patrons, and it was noon. Again, another note of fear struck my heart -- was it going to be awful?
My co-worker and I split the beet salad and penne rustico. Wow! The food was EXCELLENT. The salad was fresh and featured local goat cheese, citrus, arugula, and a heart share of beets; it also had a nice, light vinaigrette on top. The penne rustico came in a Parmesan cream sauce, which was actually bright orange. It tasted rich but not too heavy; the grilled chicken and spinach were excellent.
Our service was adequate. I wouldn't say it was the best service I have ever experienced but it was certainly better than other Yelpers received. The waiter did knock my glass over at the end of the meal; mistakes happen but we were the only table to bus. Get your head in the game!
I also though the prices were very reasonable. The beet salad was a mere $7 and the penne came in at $13. I hope this place does well, and I would definitely return for that salad again in a heartbeat. Also, big plus for beer drinkers: all local NC brews on tap! Gotta love that.Comment from sean s. of 604 at West Village 7/26/2011

Great Pizza. The 'Grandma's' is the bomb. Great dining area and bar. The space is beautiful. I have only had the pizza's here and I haven't had a bad one. If you are looking for solid pizza in NC this is the spot in Durham.

I was in a large (8 person) party for lunch at 604 West Morgan. We sat outside and the atmosphere was very nice and comfortable. Quiet because there were only 2 or 3 other tables eating lunch. Despite the small crowd, it took nearly an hour to get our entrees. We had calamari and zucchini sticks for appetizers, both were okay. Nothing exceptional or particularly bad, so I would try a different appetizer next time.
I ordered the Arugula Salad ($12) with shrimp (add $5) for my entrée since I knew I was planning to have a big dinner later in the day. It was highly disappointing. The menu description was prosciutto di parma (true), provolone (false, there was none), tomato (true, 5 grape tomatoes cut in half), grana padana (true, 5 small shavings), balsamic fig reduction (true), and the arugula (true, barely a handful of pitiful arugula). Oh, and there was the shrimp (4 small) that I added for $5. Silly me, I thought for $17 I would get a nice entrée sized salad, but instead I got a pitiful portion that did not live up to the description.
Our service was fair at best. At one point another person in our party helped herself to a large fresh pepper mill for the fresh pasta dishes everyone else was having. The waitress came out and said with attitude "I'll get in trouble if my manager sees you doing that, you should have asked!". Well, she did ask, but when the waitress only brought a pitiful little white-pepper filled shaker, she decided to help herself. We also had to ask for bread.
On the up side, 4 of the people I was with ordered pasta dishes...1) Pasta Primavera 2) Gnocchi de Monte 3) Penne Rustico and 4) Farfalle Pesto...and they all looked delicious and were good sized portions.
Overall, it was okay. If I had gotten a pasta dish, then maybe I would give 3 or 4 stars, but based on my experience and pitiful salad I'll have to stick with just 2 for now.Comment from sean s. of 604 at West Village 5/24/2011

Review from Chase A.
We had a large party here in the back. The service was great -- very attentive, speedy, got all the orders right. Really liked the ambiance. Patio seating looked great when it heats up a little.
Food was hit and miss. Apps (some sort of bruschetta and antipasto, I didn't pay much attention) were good. Caesar salad was good, and the gorgonzola greens looked good. Tiramisu was really good.
Bread was tasty after we got them to bring butter. Was too flavorless for the oil to help it out any. It tastes much like the garlic knots Cinelli's had at the old location, and perhaps it is those.
Didn't like the cheesecake, but others did. I don't like anything that has a faint hint of lemon flavor. If it's intentional flavor, make it happen. If it's unintentional, why does my cheesecake taste vaguely citrusy? (It's like the flavor in those gross, thawed-out danishes where the croissant part tastes vaguely lemony. WHY does that ever seem like a good idea?!)
Most disappointing part was the main course -- had it been coming out of any individual person's wallet, I would have sent this whole plate back. I went with the salmon, which looked good. It was well cooked and presented. But the fish itself was nearly tasteless. *groan* Start with a good base product if you're going to the hassle of cooking it and presenting it right. The "chef's choice" vegetable -- broccoli rabe (bitter) -- was a bad choice. There are other similar veggies that would work much better. Of the items on the plate, I thought the potatoes were the best, after I had them put parmesan on them. Others thought they might be instant, which is possible, but I think they were just seriously whipped. Also, the grilled tomato garnish was tasty.
(Are you feeling more and more underwhelmed as you read through this review? Good. That's exactly what the dinner felt like. The wonderful service, the ambiance, and the good-tasting smaller items are saving the restaurant from a worse review.) -

Durham, NC
I thoroughly enjoyed this restaurant, and find it to be a great addition to the downtown Durham dining scene.
I went with a group of four, and the meal was delicious, and the service was great with only a few hiccups here and there. I highly recommend the pork chop entree, which had beautiful sear on it, cooked perfectly and was served with Gorgonzola, pears, mashed potatoes and greens. I would have liked to had more pears with the dish because a fork full of pork, pear and Gorgonzola was heavenly. My dining companions also had the carbonara, chicken picatta, and farfalle which I had to try and all were very tasty.
My only gripe with the service was that our drinks went empty and one of my dining companions had to ask for a refill. This is a big no-no in my book, and I believe an attentive server will not allow your glass to go dry.
Also the entrance to the restaurant is in a courtyard in a warehouse district, and can be a bit of a challenge to find. More signs in the parking area pointing the way would easily rectify this.
Overall a great meal, and I would recommend this restaurant to anyone.Comment from sean s. of 604 at West Village 7/26/2011

This place had been open a week. The first glass of wine was cloudy: we were rewarded with two free glasses. (Check-plus.)
It was a gorgeous day. Danny was a great server. (Check-plus.)
The restaurant concept was somewhere between hazy and horribly conceived. Two servers brought us water in two different styles of glasses. Across the gorgeous patio, three patrons sipped from a third style of water glass. What do you mean, I can order off either the Cinelli's casual pizza menu or the fancy Italian menu of 604 West Morgan with substantial item overlap? I don't get it. (At best, Check.)
A conscientious young woman in black approaches us for the second time--are we ready to order now? Yes, we are. Great, she said, I'll go get your server. (Check-minus.)
She delivers pizzaplace garlic bread with fancyItalianstyle olive oil on the side. perplexing. (???)
(I return the quiz back to the student. You need to pay a little more attention to your presentation before I'll give you a conclusive grade, I scold. )
You need to pay more attention to your presentation before I'll give you a conclusive assessment, 604West Morgan/Cinelli's. -

I have tried this place twice, the first time not being impressed by it at all. After giving this place a second try I can say it was delightful. If you have a chance to try any risotto dish they are offering on the menu (which does change) try it! We had the lobster risotto and both enjoyed that very much. I had the halibut special which was quite tasty. My husband had the lamb. Both of us enjoyed our meal.

As a New Yorker, I have eaten in some wonderful Italian restaurants in NY. What a surprise to find this outstanding restaurant in NC where I now live. It is a great neighborhood find. The food is sensational. I have eaten here 5 times and have enjoyed every dinner. This restaurant has become one of my favorites here. All the meats are such great quality and prepared with wonderful flavors (I loved the NY Strip, the pork chop, and the rack of lamb). All the pasta dishes are also wonderful. There is definitely something here for everyone.

Hi - I reviewed 604 back in December after the worst customer service ever. The owner contacted me via Yelp and offered to have us back. Well, we just returned last night (5 months later).
This time we did actually get food! However my chopped salad came minus roasted red peppers which I had to point out to our server. Instead of offering to bring me a new CHOPPED salad, she brought me a small bowl of red peppers (I guess I was supposed to help prepare my chopped salad).
The rest of the food experience was good (seafood pasta), my husband's lasagna was gigantic but he said there wasn't much meat sauce in it.
The only other troubling bit was that the hostess walked us around by the restrooms to get to our table, going through a separate hall instead of through the largely empty restaurant (it was early - it did fill up later but we had theater tix). Is the restroom tour supposed to be scenic? Speaking of restrooms, I'll mention it was less than clean and, again, early in the night.1 Previous Review: Show all »

Hooray! I was so excited to write this update, if we didn't have plans to go to the DPAC after I literally would have come right home and written this. It is the next day now, after my visit with my partner for an early dinner last night.
Let me stop and give some background, After writing my last review of 604, I received a message on Yelp from Sean, one of the owner's. He apologized and stated that the chef and partner executive chef were out the night I visited. He also offered an invitation for my partner and I to come back and visit again.
I really appreciated his message and really appreciate any owner or manager addressing the reviews on Yelp and using them to improve which let's be honest, is a reason many of us use Yelp.
I was really looking forward to coming back in because as I said in my last review, our experience really was positive except for the food.
I decided to order basically the same thing as last time except I changed from the beet salad to the mixed greens and had the rack of lamb again. My partner had the filet of the day. I was SO nervous about the food because I really wanted it to be amazing so I could write a great review after such a positive experience with the owner. And maybe if you could tell by now by my rating, it was!
The ingredients in the salad were fresh and delicious. I really enjoyed the combination of apples with the cheese and walnuts. This is actually the only salad I have seen my partner order that has not been a Caesar salad, which is a great sign :).
The lamb was wonderfully delicious. It was much more flavorful this time around. It was cooked a bit closer to Medium than the MR I ordered but it was close enough. Maybe something to discuss more in depth with customers before hand. The potatoes and veggies were also delicious and wonderfully cooked.
My partner's filet was also wonderful. His was actually cooked appropriately to the MR temperature he ordered. It came with foie gras on top which I had to have a bite of.
Our server that night was clearly new to the team and left off telling us about some of the specials which was a bit disappointing to hear them from a server telling them to another table after we ordered. We were also only told the filet of the day's potatoes and not about the foie gras on top which I found surprising. But other than that the service was excellent. The food came out with a pause between the salad and entrée which I believe is an important part of fine dining, enjoying the experience and not being rushed out the door. This is important to note for all you DPAC people. Our reservation was at 5:30pm so we could be out the door at 7:00pm for the 7:30pm show time. I would not suggest trying to eat here in less time than that unless you want to feel rushed. This place is about the experience and in the beautiful decor I am happy to say it was a great one.
We had tickets to Into the Heights at DPAC so were unable to stay for dessert. It was probably a good thing seeming that we both ate the majority of our meals.
Overall, a very positive experience and a memorable meal. Great job 604!1 Previous Review: Show all »

Hands-down the best pizza in the triangle. There are so many crappy chains in this area. Get the "Grandma's"....it is thin crust (which normally I don't like- all my years in NYC and I never really got used to the pizzza- I am much more of a chicago deep dish sort of girl...) But I digress. Cinelli's is quite yummy. Service is a little slow, but well worth the wait.

Last night we went to the new location of Cinelli's which we had been to a fair amount by Whole Foods. There was a Groupon Now special and we decided to find the new place. We got there early-6ish and the place was pretty empty. However, it took sooo long to get our pizza and it was overcooked by the time we got it. I didn't think it was worth it to bring leftovers home, but my husband will eat anything so he did. Another issue, it was very buggy outside (summer in NC, I know, but even citronella candles at the tables would help). Also, the difference between Cinelli's and 604 W Morgan was NOT clear. Pretty much everyone we saw got confused about what was what. Logos on doors definitely need new graphic design. And then the overlapping menu items-why is famous grandma pizza either $12 or $16 at Cinelli's but $14 at 604? If these places are going to survive in this hidden of a location they have A LOT of work to do. Oh yeah, grumpy waiter too. Probably won't be back, what with Pop's so close by with fresher food and faster service.

Visited restaurant after buying a Groupon for this restaurant...great deal! Had hard time figuring out where you enter restaurant but realized you enter from Fernway not Morgan. Patio is great to for happy hour or for friends to sit and eat especially on the weekend. Patio was full so we ate inside..ambiance was quiet and very serene. Inside does have a bar if you wanted to get a drink after DPAC or a baseball game. Waiter was very attentive and owner greeted us as we approached to let the hostess know we had a reservation. Crabcakes and Bruschetta for appetizers were great which we paired with a glass of Riesling wine that was excellent! I had seafood pasta which was great and my partner had the NY Strip that was good perfectly! For desert we had Creme Brulee and Cheesecake. Our waiter was very busy that night but still very attentive and gave us recommendations when I couldn't decide between three entrees. This place is great for dinner, large group or an event. Will dine there again!

Holly Springs, NC
We were among the victims back in December when we attempted a pre-DPAC dinner that coincided with a disaster in the kitchen accompanied by some very incompetent management and we ended up never getting our main course meals. Following our mention of this dismal experience on Yelp, we were contacted by the owner Sean who apologized for our experience and asked if he could help make it right. We appreciated his contact and took him up on his offer. We took our family to the restaurant last evening and had a very good experience that more than offset the earlier disaster. Our waiter was knowledgeable and we generally followed his recommendations - each of us getting a different entrée so we got a good cross-section of the menu offerings. Service was smooth, prompt and attentive. The rolls we were offered while we were waiting the main course were dried out and flavorless. The second batch was much much better, tender and tasty - apparently the first batch were left over from something - they should not have been served. There was a delay in getting our meals of around 20 minutes. We didn't object as we had time but if we had theater seats this time, it could have been a problem. We should have been warned. The meals, however, were outstanding! Succulent flavors, very well presented and all around delicious. I had the salmon which turned out to be among the best I've had outside of Alaska. Others in our party commented on the moist and thick pork chops - best they had ever tasted, the exciting flavors of the stuffed chicken and the unique flavors we each found. There was much sharing between our party member with comments of try this! We were unanimous in our ratings of the food as truly excellent. Sean was in the house, it was a pleasure to meet him. We will be back - I'm glad to say I can now recommend the restaurant.
