Surf and Turf!! Holy cow is the soy wasabi butter sauce amazing. You could dip cardboard in this stuff and love it. Good thing they give you an awesome cut of meat & delicious shrimp instead :) Yummalicious! My favorite meal anywhere. Worth your money!

Okay I will be honest the three stars are all for ambiance. One of my fellow yelpers stated this was the best place in Chico but not in California. I have not tried other restaurants in Chico but it is definately not the best in California. Now I will admit to having fish at a steak restaurant and most of hte rave reviews were over their steak. But I had been traveling all day and did not want something heavy. And you know what - if you serve it - I will evaluate and past on my opinion of it.
The fish was Mahi Mahi and it was greasy. Not sure how you make fish greasy but they did. I don't remember the type of soup I had as the only thing I remember is - this is slighly warm. Also I got their parmasean fries. Yea that was just regular fries with parmasean cheese on top. Where is the garlic and other seasonings that really make those fries great.
The ambiance was great. It was darkly lit but I liked it and could see it being a romantic place to take my hubby.
So my recommendation is to stay away from soup and seafood at this joint and stick to what the other yelpers are raving about - the steak. -

Chico, CA
Someone has to bring this place back down to reality. This place is very nicely put together, ambiance, service, bar, etc. I'll give you that but c'mon chico i'm getting tired of beautifully put together restaurants that charge michelin star prices but provide michelin tire food. This place wins the coveted best of Chico every year and its laughable. I've been here about 5 times, couple of times just for drinks (which the bartenders Are some of the best in town) but every time I ate here for dinner I was always disappointed. First of all if your gonna advertise as being a steakhouse you better have more than just 3 cuts of meat on the menu, someone needs to have a talk with the local butcher. Then your gonna give me cheddar cheese mashed potatoes that look like someone dropped them from a four story building onto my plate but before doing so seasoned them with the pallet of a chain-smoking inmate doing life, in other words over seasoned but it balanced nicely with the under seasoned rib-eye. Hey if your gonna charge me steakhouse prices you better deliver, $50 per person I'd rather go back to Tom Colicchio's Craft where I know I'll get a choice of numerous cuts of meat, as well as appetizers that aren't greasy pub food disguised as...well greasy pub food. By the way Almost every "fine" dinning restaurant in Chico is basically upscale pub food that is to say it is pub food disguised with upscale prices.
P.S. I do want to reiterate the service here is always good and the bar is a nice place for a great cocktail but skip the food, buy your own locally raised cuts of meat (Hanger, brisket, skirt, oxtail, porter-house) and cook it yourself, I mean we are americans and should be able to cook a great steak ourselves. -

While pricey, you pay for the quality. I have enjoyed steaks from all over, even Brazil, and I have to say they do it right here. I went on Valenteins with my wife, and the cook prepared my steak perfectly, and the meat is well chosen. The staff is well trained and polite. The presentation is excellent as well, I will definitely be going back.

THE best steak house in the Northern part of this great state. A little bird told me that they are the only ones that are allowed to buy this meat....It is excellent. The service is awesome and you can really unwind in the outdoor seating area.
You can have Surf and Turf here for around $32...excellent...just don't try to order the Bar Burger while in the dining room (you can only get that at the bar...lol).
You can also enjoy many fine wines and extra large desserts... -

Every time I go to 5th Street, I am blown away by the filet. It's the only thing I get. Definitely a little pricey, but the food quality beyond makes up for it. Garlic mashed potatoes are ridiculous, and the filet literally melts in your mouth. I always get it medium-rare to fully appreciate the flavor. I have been to 5th Street about 10ish times, and have always left extremely satisfied, full, and with leftovers.

The food was good but it is CRAZY loud in this place. It was a good steak but a bit expensive. Not really a "date" place.

This place is good, but I think over rated. I have had better steaks and service at Sierra Nevada but this place is nice for a change once in a while.

Whoa.
As a recent (and broke) college graduate, I've never had the luxury to eat at 5th Street Steakhouse until I received a $75 gift card and let me tell ya, it was PHENOMENAL!
I can't even describe to you how awesome it was, you'll just have to take my word for it. Dress to impress and enjoy! -

Best place to go if you want a steak in Chico. I will admit that they are pricey but 100% worth it. The bartender always make good strong drinks and the steak has always been perfect. I prefer to get the calimari and ceasar salad appetizers. They also have a great white chocolate brownie for dessert.

We discovered 5th Street Steakhouse when we took our daughter to tour Chico State. She's attending there now and 5th Street is on the 'must dine' list whenever we visit.
Consistently the best steak I've had anywhere. We always order the New York steaks. They are perfectly cooked each time and the baked garlic that accompanies them makes a great steak even better. As for sides - the Caesar salad, grilled asparagus, baked potato and mashed potatoes
are all excellent choices. Service is professional and attentive. Not inexpensive, but the quality is outstanding and every meal has been memorable.
It's usually crowded - especially on weekends - go early if you hate to wait. Once the hostess offered to take our name and call our cell five minutes before she anticipated our table being ready which enabled us to take a pre-dinner stroll. Can be a bit noisy, but I think it ads to the ambience. Easily Chico's best restaurants and certainly a favorite of ours. -

A good steak house, yup good, probably the best in chico. Likely not the best in nor cal, and definitely not the best in california. The food is consistantly good sometimes slightly above that, but nothing mind blowing. I ve had better ribeyes off my buddies grill... decent prices. Oh yea and the garlic mashed taters are rockin.
My biggest gripe though is the amibiance or lack thereof, terribly loud if you go on an even remotely busy night, and usually a minimum hour long wait, not to mention being packed like sardines in a brick can. Started with five stars deducted one for the noise factor, and one more because I think the place is overated by most. -

One of the best steak's I have had in a lonngggg time. The beef was so tender and fresh. We started off with some apps. The wontons, calamari, grilled antipasti and onion strings. All were very tasty, especially the wontons and the sweet soy sauce. Next I ordered the wedge salad with bleu cheese dressing. The bacon was cooked perfectly, not too crispy or rubbery. Overall the surf n turf was the winner. The prawns were chargrilled and not chewy. The filet was like I said, amazingly tender. I usually order medium rare but this time I ordered medium and it came out perfectly pink with a dash of red. And did I mention garlic mashies, come on!!! Will always make a stop here when I'm in Chico.

Incredible steaks. Incredible sides (grilled asparagus -- thrilling!). Incredible desserts.
THE place to go for a wonderful, memorable dinner in Chico.
Many nights they have live music on the patio, or a wonderful pianist.
Pricey, but well worth it.Listed in: Beyond the Fringe - eating…, When in Chico . . .

Chico, CA
Brought a group of business friends in recently. We were seated at a table that was so dark that the waitress pulled out a flashlight to help us see the menu.
This was a business dinner and we plainly let waitstaff know this. As the modest meal ended management refused to split the bill and insisted that one person pick up the tab or everyone cough up cash.
Everyone, myself included, was embarassed and inconvenienced beyond belief.
In point of fact, if anyone would have asked the 18 people in the party would have split into four bills.
Will I ever go again?
Not in this life. -

This is the spot to go to for steak in Chico.
And its so affordable, we can go every six months or so and not feel like we are breaking the bank.
Don't bother wasting your time anywhere else.
We made a reservation a week or so ahead of time and it really helped!Listed in: My Neighborhood

We went to this place on a Friday night, and were greeted warmly by the hostess who told us there'd be a 15 min wait. No problem, went to the bar, where the barkeep were friendly and patient with the many questions the companion had.
After we were seated and told about the specials, we ordered:
Caesar salad and bowl of clam chowder to share; companion had the special, a panko parmesan crusted cod with a mushroom shrimp cream sauce on top of mashed potatoes. I forgot what vegetable was on the side. I ordered a medium rare ribeye with the potato cakes.
The bread brought out was a fresh sourdough, still warm. A little on the dry side but nice texture and flavor.
The Caesar was a mixed deal-- reasonably sized anchovies were on the top, the greens were fresh and the croutons house made, but the dressing was definitely too lemony and didn't have enough of the savory element (the anchovies?) to bring body to the dressing. The soup was a solid chowder, with a nice texture with some decent chunks of clams, but I would have preferred a stronger clam flavor in the broth.
The fish was okay-- probably not a reorder-- the cod's flaky texture didn't hold up to the breading, and while the sauce was a tad salty, it was very good on the bland mashed potatoes.
The potato cakes tasted like mashed potatoes shaped into hockey pucks and fried on each side for some texure, but were dry and lacked any much seasoning. The steak, slightly overcooked, was good on one side (the tenderloin side), while the other side was good but not great.
Service was reasonably attentive, solid but nothing to stand out in our memory.
The Lowdown:
Food: 3- stick to the steaks. The appetizers definitely need some work; they're the weakest point of the menu.
Service/Atmosphere: 3- yeah, it's "higher end" steakhouse. It's not in the league of the best, but it's the best in Chico, and their service reflects that.
Price: 3.0- actually fairly reasonable or in line for the type of restaurant. -

Best rib eye I've ever had. They had excellent choices for wine and desert as well!
Unfortunately, my date ate a strand of steel wool left in the calamari appetizer. I still can't think of how that could have gotten in there. Thank god she coughed it up!
Management was nice enough to comp the appetizer and desert. Could have gotten more; but there was honestly little damage done. -

Clearly the best steakhouse in Chico. Does not rate the same as say Carlie Palmer Steak or Palm, so I can't give it 5 stars, but it is truly a very good steak place.
Service was solid. The bruchetta was a nice start and the wedge salads were all nicely prepared. The Rib eye that I had was perfect. My wife ordered a small filet "medium" and had to send it back for a little more fire. Not a problem and the server checked back right away so the delay was minimized. My son had a New York which was gone before I could ask him about it, so I assume it was pretty good.
The menu is very limited. No lamb, no pork just steaks and the required chicken and fish alternative. Deserts are also pretty basic but the brownie with ice cream was satisfying and enough to share (but clearly this does not take a master chef to assemble).
Not a cheap dinner but worth it and a hands down winner in Chico. -

5th Street is one of our favorite restaurants. The food is consistently good, and I have never had a complaint about a meal I have had. Both my husband and I love a good ribeye, but also enjoy sitting at the bar having a burger! The restaurant has a great ambience and like I said is always good.

If you are a Chico State student and your folks are coming to visit, you know full well that you are going to be able to pry that one big, expensive meal out of them during their stay. And thats exactly what 5th Street Steakhouse is for.
While it would be a great place to take a date, lets face it, neither of you probably have the money for that. Take her to buck night instead. No, 5th Street is the master of the parental bonus meal.
When is the last time you had a big, perfectly prepared steak? If you are as broke as I was when going to Chico, the correct answer is 'the last time i saw my folks'... 5th Street has some very excellent steaks, and your parents will probably be so happy that you are still alive that they will spring for the meal. Thats what parents are for!
Honestly, i think my fav part was the grilled garlic they put with the steaks. Fantastic.
So go forth students, milk your parents for that free steak! ill let you in on a secret though... they are probably happy to do it. -

I've noticed a trend lately of servers memorizing orders instead of writing them down. Until my evening at the 5th street steak house it was starting to annoy me. The server here took our order and when our steaks arrived she'd forgotten we'd ordered salads. Our salads were promptly served to us, but by this time we were in full carnivore mode and the salads were not enjoyed at the same level had they been served properly before the steaks.
Because of our servers memory lapse she graciously removed the salads from the bill. I am no longer bothered when our orders are memorized, and in fact get a bit excited, since it might mean I'll get part of it for free.
And in case you were wondering, the steaks, service, and ambiance here are excellent. -

Went here while up in Chico for a few days. This place is a grown up oasis in a sea of college hangouts. Our waitress was a professional server, not a student making cash on the side. The level of service was exceptional from start to finish.
The food was good. I ordered the mixed green salad - very tasty, just the right amount of dressing. Then I had the fish for my main course. I probably should have ordered something else when the waitress told me it wasn't fresh. I suppose it serves me right for ordering fish in a steakhouse. There's a life lesson in there somewhere. Dessert was the creme brulee which was the biggest serving of creme brulee I've ever seen. Now I'm a big fan of the creme brulee but I barely made a dent in their serving size.
All in all a good dinner option in Chico if you're not on a student budget. -

Good steaks cooked as ordered. Great burger but only allowed to order at the bar...makes no sense but the way it is. The place is very loud for some reason. Might be the accoustics of the buiding. All around a good steakhouse with quality beef.

Been here twice, both time I was going solo. Both times I was there 6:30-7ish and it was busy. I took a pub table by the bar so I didn't have to wait. The bar staff was very good and attentuve at playing waiter. I realize this is a steakhouse, and you should probably get steak when you come here, but I want to point something out that you might miss.
The lobster is impeccable. I was so impressed. You know how there is a sweet spot in time oc preparation for lobster. Its a very brief window to cook a lobster to perfection. 5th St Steakhouse has nailed this sweet spot on both my visits separated by something like 6 months. For this I dub the 4 star, and if I could a 4.5 star review. -

Only the top 1-2% of all beef can be labeled USDA Prime--and 5th Street makes that cut. Ruth Chris and Vic Stewart's don't compare (seriously), the prices are less, the service and quality is BETTER. Nicks Grill rocks my socks (for those with a penchant for blue cheese and a melt-in-your-mouth filet).
Grab dinner here on a Saturday night--Harass Frank the Ambassador (tell him Maggie says hi!) then head to LaSalles down the street for a rockin' 80s night.
The menu changes on occasion(the staples are always there), but the new additions are just as fabulous!
Lunch on Fridays too!
***I never worked for any of the owners--I'm truly a loyal patron. -

Simply the best steaks around.
Love this place. I have never had a bad meal here. Steaks are perfect everytime and are served with roasted garlic. Even for those out there who like to defile a steak and order it well done will still get a very juicey steak cooked all the way through. Try the ribeye or the lobster ravioli. The drinks are awesome, service is great.
Two down sides though: a bit pricey, and no reservations on weekends. -

Most consistent dinner place in Chico. I have enjoyed all my meals here been to it over 20 times. A few off nights but they handled the problems well. The owner Frank is a great guy. He will walk around the tables and ask how your food is, a lot to be said for that level of service. This is where I go for a good meal in Chico. I give it 5 based off location. I can't expect a Ruths Chris or Gallagher's style meal in Chico so yes it's not the "greatest" ever. But more then 5 star Chico worthy with out a doubt. Btw. Bar burger best in town don't bother with that burger brews or nobby places.

Chico, CA
I have been here a few times and always have a great time. The food is consistent, the atmosphere is much nicer than anywhere else in town. When you are at 5th street, you don't even feel like you are in Chico. The service is always good but I always make sure the server knows we are going to be there a while, otherwise they have a tendency to hurry you along. And I am not spending a bunch of money to be hurried along.

Don't mess around with any other restaurant for steak--this is the place. I've been to every nice restaurant in Chico, and if you love steak and want a place where you know you are going to have a great meal, go to 5th St.
The rib-eye is my favorite--and I order it as rare as possible. Their cuts are amazing and consistent. Also add cheese and bacon to your baked potato to finish off the perfect mea. -

We have been here several times. With groups and just as a couple. We went back on Sunday night and were reminded again why it is one of our favorites.
The service is always great. There can be a wait, but it is never uncomfortable. The bar gets crowded, but the service stays excellent. Even when your waiting awhile it does get uncomfortable, it feels like your hanging out with friends.
The wine list is great. The servers know the wines and have not disappointed when asked for suggestions. Most times we bring our own wine, but usually we end up trying something from the list as well. Yes, we have a problem.
Of course the steaks are great, but that's not all. There is usually a fresh fish entree and it has always been excellent. Garlic mashed potatoes not your socks off.
The desserts are great. We usually get something to share. Not because we are full, but because when the rest of the meal has been so good, the anticipation of another great dish is too much to suppress.
This is just a topnotch restaurant in the north state. -

Ate here last week with a colleague while we were in town on business and was not impressed. We sat at the bar, where it happened to be happy hour. It was obvious most people were there for the discounted food and were complaining about the quality. Come on people, it is waaaayyyyy cheaper so quit yer bitchin!!
Anyway, we both ordered ribeyes, cooked medium, and received somewhat overcooked fatty pieces of meat. I always order ribeyes and usually the meat is well marbeled and flavorful. The meat here was just overly fatty and not well marbeled, the fat was tough and not melt in your mouth flavor.
Anyway, it was not great but not bad. I'd go back in the future but probably order something different. -

Great place for a special occasion!
Has a lovely Bar, the atmosphere is great, and the service was pretty good. I took my ex there on Valenetine's and we waited 1.5hours at the bar, but they paid for all our drinks from the bar and the rest was perfect. Try the Steak Surf and Turf, the Wasabi Soy's my fav sauce. -

Best steaks I've ever had. I like my meat bloody and 5th Street knows what they are doing. Along with the steaks the 1 lb baked potato that comes with your meal tastes like it's somehow been injected with butter. The salads are tasty, the martinis are over the top. The decor is very urban and inviting. It can get quite loud but you won't need to talk or hear. You will be to focused on the meat.
Rumor is that there chicken dishes are great too.....I've never met anyone who's tried one though. -

I took my wife here to celebrate our 10 year anniversary. I wanted something special. I was not disappointed! 5th Street Steakhouse is by far one of the best dining experiences I have had in a while. The rib eye steak practically melted in my mouth. The mashed potatoes and asparagus were unbelievably tasty. Our waitress was very nice and attentive. Definitely recommended for anyone looking for a excellent steak dinner in the Chico area. I'll definitely be coming back!
