Where to begin? The small storefront coneals a gigantic upstairs, and ready-and-able staff members every few feet. I go in at least once a week, as we upgrade our row house a few blocks to the north. I've always been a huge fan of Frager's but Ace is closer, and the staff even friendlier. Anyway, no matter what I ask for, I get good advice, helpful suggestions on how to proceed with a project.
When I needed a rake last fall, the sales person asked where I lived and said, "We're neighbors. You can just borrow mine." I bought the rake, and promised to share it with anyone who needed it. Any request for help is met with someone springing to her feet and walking me exactly to what I need. They recommended what's most appropriate, not what's most expensive. The prices are fair. It's convenient for anyone in Shaw, Mount Vernon. There's a Safeway next door, Busboys and Poets steps away, a great bike shop (now on 9th Street NW) -- all make for a great neighborhood feel. Ace has a rebate points plan.
Again, this hardware store wins hands down for its helpful staff, with their sense of humor, and willingness to do the little extra for each customer.
Much beloved and strongly recommended. -

I create excuses to shop at 5th Street Ace Hardware. No joke. This place is amazing! It's much bigger than it looks from outside. They have a HUGE upstairs. And the employees are amazing! Extremely helpful and knowledgeable, ready and willing to help customers even when the store is busy. My most memorable visit was when I desperately needed to be able to lock my bedroom door from the outside (long story). The employee at 5th Street Ace Hardware not only helped me find the door knob section, he took one of the door knobs completely apart to show me how easily I could install it myself. Fantastic!

It's the Cheesecake Factory of hardware stores - there's a ton of stuff and just about everyone can find something they like!
I'm here once a week now, picking up the random odds and ends. Outlet face plates, spare keys, shower curtain rings, paint rollers, scotch tape and weed spray made the list recently. The prices are ever so slightly more than Home Depots you'll find in the 'burbs, but I figure adding in the cost of gas will probably even things out, so you're better off coming here.
Tip: Sign up for their frequent rewards card if you think you'll come here even a few times a year. You can rack up points and get coupons and such. Hey, every penny counts, right? -

Great service .. I walked in and immediately was taken to what I needed. The associated were all great and the store was well laid out (first floor is basically nonsensical dollar store stuff though).
Would come here again instead of HD or Lowes. -

I struggle with this evaluation. Is it 4 or 5 stars. Honestly I would go 4.25 stars citing demerits because the staff are too helpful. They do have good products at good prices. The aggressive staff are aggravating.
Sometimes I just want to wander around and remember the endless tasks I have to fix my house/car/my life with solutions from Ace hardware. That is not allowed apparently. 5th Street Ace Hardware does allow my dog so they get the upgrade to 5 stars.
Thumbs up! -

These people are Awesome! They have everything I need and don't need. They are always helpful and nice, even when I have a list of window panes I need them to cut.
It's an old fashioned hardware store with old fashioned personal service.
Good Job Guys! -
Review from Louis B.
This is one of the best neighborhood hardware stores I've ever seen. Clean, organized, with helpful staff, and without the take-it-or-leave-it attitude of the box stores. Move over, Home Depot... As well, they have coffee upstairs so you can spend more time and shop some more.... Good marketing... I'd gladly pay for the small increase in price to get the personable treatment.
Whether in shelving, construction, gardening, and assistance, this place has it. Even though it's a bit out of the way, it is still convenient by Metro so I go two stops out of my way to make it here.
If you buy outsized merchandise and have to contribute to Global Warming by driving, there's plenty of parking in the garage levels of this new uber-yuppie condo building. As well, make it a day and shop at the Safeway next door to the North, then stop by the new Busboys and Poets Restaurants next door to the South so you can dine without having to look at Republicans. That's worth the expense right there.
All in all, a wonderful shopping experience.Listed in: Puppy Friendly DC

5th Street Ace might be small, but it is formidable. Pretty much anything you need here home-repair/improvement wise can be found.
My husband and I are renovating our home and so we have become more than "regular customers". The staff here is incredible and know you as a person, not just another sale. Tom, Arthur, Jason are just some of the awesome crew that make this such a wonderful place to shop. Yes, the prices are a bit higher than Home Depot, but the experience is 100x less stressful and aggravating. And unlike other places, the staff here actually know what they are talking about and are happy to spend time guiding you through whatever steps of a project you need help navigating.
And if you have a dog, bring 'em here! Always a treat ready for your little hound. -

This Ace Hardware is awesome!
I have been incredibly spoiled by good Ace stores my whole life after growing up in MN where, you know, everyone is nice, especially at the hardware store. But the guys at this Ace did not disappoint. They helped me from the second I walked through the door and walked me to every aisle I needed. They were also incredibly patient with my less that technical descriptions of what I was looking for
The small store packs a surprising punch, and as far as hardware stores go, this one is classy! It's yuppy-friendly stock has all the basics, and some higher end decorations, kitchenware and cleaning supplies. And the prices were great. I'm used to paying a premium for things in the city, but the few things I got were much less expensive than at the Home Depot I go to in NoVa.
The location is convenient; it's just a few blocks from the convention center Metro stop and is in right next door to a great Safeway. -

This is one of my favorite stores int he hood!
I cannot believe all of the varied items this store carries. I mean they have everything you can imagine!! Picnic tables, organic soaps, paint, plumbing fixtures, plants, pet items...and the list goes on and on.
The staff is quite friendly as well.
I can't believe that I am actually rating a hardware store 5 starts, but its true! -

One of the most friendliest hardware stores (and stores in general) that I've ever been to.
The staff greeted me at the door and asked what I was looking for. Then proceeded to take me to each location to help me find what I needed. I was in and out in about 5 min! They have a great selection and they were able to answer all of my questions.
Friendly staff, great selection, great location..what more can you ask for? -

I always liked going to True Value and Ace Hardware stores because they are franchises that have a small town charm. The customer service at the Washington DC area Ace Hardware stores is wonderful. The staff are kind and courteous and know a decent amount about projects. Even though the prices here are higher than Home Depot and Lowe's, I still stop by for quick purchases. I once purchased something online and the owner of the stores offered to drop it off for free. They also have a lot of groupon/living social deals that come in handy.

Jeezy Creezy, I'm glad this place opened up. 5th Street Hardware, a child of Logan Hardware, is the first business to open up in the City Vista development in the Mount Vernon Triangle neighborhood.* It couldn't have opened a day too soon.
I went in on their second day in operation and was totally impressed by the amount of stuff they had...26 aisles with everything from plumbing to electrical, a full-service paint department, and even a bit of lumber. Most stuff is up on the second floor, and finding things was a breeze.
What really stood out was the customer service. I must have been literally one of the first customers in there, and all of the employees seemed almost excited to help me out. When I did need some help, they were on the ball provided good help. I even got some keys made on the cheap.
There seems to be only one register, which might get a little trying, but it beats the hell out of running up to Home Depot for a bit of wire and paint and then waiting in their lines for an hour. They also have a spot set aside for requested items. This is geared to consumers and not contractors, so some things will go un-found here (track lighting kits were notable), but I'm sure that'll get figured out as they learn the neighborhood. All in all, a shockingly wide selection.
* Note to the Yelp Elite who must read all reviews: The area known as Mount Vernon Triangle, which roughly covers the area between Shaw and Chinatown west of NoMa, currently has no marker on Yelp. The "Mount Vernon Square" neighborhood currently counts only the Carnegie Library...I said something last year, but maybe someone with more weight can fix it before Results, Busboys & Poets, and Safeway open. -

I am continually impressed with this store. But, to be honest, I've also known the GM since we were in kindergarten.
This store always has stocked shelves (which can be hard to come by in DC), friendly staff, and the amount of inventory is nuts! I'm really excited to be moving so close to a store that pretty much has everything because it saves me from having to hike up to the unorganized, empty aisles of Target in Columbia Heights.
Great store! -

Store has a wide selection. Gardening on the first floor with everything else including, tools, key engraving, paint and closet organizers on the expansive 2nd floor. There is an elevator for those that can't make it up the stairs. Staff was friendly and helpful.
My one suggestion is that they should have a hand held price checker for their second floor staff. Almost everything is labeled with prices but the ladders were not and they had to radio down to the registers and read off UPC codes. This ended up being futile and we carried the ladder down to the register to do the price check.Listed in: Mount Vernon Triangle

I'm amazed at how well the place is run. The staff here is friendly and efficient--when you walk in the door, an employee asks if you're looking for something specific. If it's upstairs, she'll point you that way and speak into her secret service microphone the item you're looking for. When you get upstairs, another employee is there ready to take you to your item and answer any questions you may have. The managers here certainly didn't go to the CVS school of customer service.
if that's enough there's also free popcorn. -

Great hardware place. The inventory seems to constantly be expanding and it's hard to believe how much space they have when you look at the small store front. I can't remember a time I've gone in there and haven't found exactly what I need. The staff are always helpful, but can be a little overbearing sometimes.
Still, an awesome place to have in the neighborhood. -

Clean, well organized, helpful, considerate and honestly not that expensive. One time I came in to pick up some mason jars and it wasn't clear whether the sale on them had ended - they gave me the sale anyway.

True 5 stars is pretty rockin for a hardware store. This one is all about the service and the effoft. No you can not get a reciprocating sabre saw or a pneumatic drill... but the guy behind the counter will get it for you and prolly call you on your cell.
I walked in they gave me love. I asked for the extension cords and they sent me upstairs. I was halfway up when he said "No sorry not aisle 23! That's in aisle 24!" Dude could have just let me find it. It was labeled but he WANTED TO HELP. 5 stars.
Rock on. -

I love this place! Great service each time I go in. They have a plethora things that I had no idea were available in the middle of the D.C. and the staff is nice.
Great job 5th Street Ace! I feel like I'm in my small town home in Minnesota when I go there and that says a lot to me. -

We bought a house last year and took many trips to the Home Depot only to have them repeatedly remind us how bad a store it is.
5th St Ace is as far the opposite as you can get. The place is much bigger than you would expect (it actually extends south over the next vendor) so that have quite a complete hardware store... even renting equipment!
As everyone else has stated the staff couldn't be more helpful. Everyone you pass makes sure you are finding what you are looking for. It is obvious that the owners/managers have trained their staff to know how important this is. I would highly recommend this store to novice DIY's or even seasoned fix-it-uppers! -

Customer service unlike any I've experienced in DC. I felt like I was back in the Midwest. I've gone to this store about a dozen times for the typical random hardware store items - a lightbulb, some screws, potting soil, to get a key made, that sort of thing - and it has been a pleasure every time.
The staff are friendly and appear to be having a good time without entirely goofing off. Several times a man with a British accent sang along with the radio while he was checking me out. When I come in, more often than not they ask how they can help me, and direct me to the right part of the store, where another attendant helps me find what I'm looking for. The prices are completely reasonable, and the location is fantastic if you live anywhere nearby - the next closest hardware store is way up at P and 14th.
What really got me was when I checked out once and the cashier asked me if I'd been to Safeway next door. I said no, but I was stopping there next. He then proceeded to tell me about a coupon that would print on the back of the Safeway receipt, that could be redeemed for 1) a free Ace Hardware tote bag AND 2) 10% off my order AND 3) buy-one-get-one-free keys made!!! He said I could bring the receipt back in and he would adjust my total no problem, and gave me the free bag to use for my groceries. This commitment to providing customers with good value and outstanding service totally earned my loyalty. I will shop here regularly and would recommend it to anyone who asks. -

Love having a local hardware store. Which means no more regular trips to the RI Home Depot (Worst HD ever!) Great customer service at 5th Street, good selection of pretty much everything you need and well organized. It is a little more pricey than your Lowe's or HD, but well worth it in the long run.
They also allow my dog in to shop with me (he loves it there). Which makes it super convenient when running errands. -

This is the place to go if you want (1) the stuff you need (2) expert advice on what to buy. I recently went in looking for a wooden wedge to repair a kitchen drawer. The employee not only searched with me to find the right piece, but when we could not find it, he went as far as cutting one to my specifications from a piece of wood. Wow! The price.... one (1) dollar!! The guys who run this store are friendly, welcoming and always up for a joke or two. Marvellous! Not the lowest prices in town, but then I don't mind paying a little extra for such great service.

I'm a fan. This place has saved me from the awful Brentwood Home Depot many times. Super clean, well-organized, well-stocked, and helpful staff. Store is wayyyy larger than it looks from the exterior. I only wish it had longer hours of operation.

It is wonderful to find a real hardware store so close to downtown. They have a very helpful staff that is more than willing to assist when you need their help. I have no reservations about this store, go here before HD on Rhode Island Ave and you will not be disappointed.

This place is fantastic- everyone there is incredibly helpful. It's really nice to go in there and either know exactly what you need or have questions and have great customer service either way. The prices are a little high, but it is totally worth it to avoid the miserable experience of the big box stores.

I am a weekend DIYer and have been since my dad taught me contractor's trade as a kid. I have been to every hardware store in DC proper I can find, and 5th Street Ace Hardware beats them all on nearly every account, so I'm lucky they're in my neighborhood.
The staff are INCREDIBLE. The only knock I have on this store is sometimes their selection is a bit limited when you are looking to multifarious and disconnected projects. For instance, they don't have blinds. But when you find out they don't have blinds, they will go through whatever trouble they can to find out who DOES have them (unfortunately, the Logan store didn't carry them unless I wanted to get them custom ordered, so I ended up having to go to Home Depot this one time). The funny thing about that experience is it further ingratiated the store to me, even though they didn't have my product. I was more likely to come back because of the effort they displayed.
Every time I go in, I leave with more than I was looking for. For an urban hardware store, they have more products than you would expect, and a decent selection of them. I've purchased domestic products here, such as a French press coffee pot or Brita water filters, and I've purchased the more conventional hardware products, such as a pitchfork, a spade, gardening supplies, hooks, pulls, bolts, wood laquer -- they have most of what you'll be looking for. As far as choice goes, they have a great selection of tools and accessories. I was pretty impressed by the stock of power tools and hand tools they had, and they now carry Craftsman products, which is a big selling point for me. I love Ace and all, but their generic Ace products tend to crap out pretty quickly (a drill bit tip broke off on me on the first use, screwdriver literally fell apart in my hands, etc.), but even then, the store doesn't hesitate to replace these products free of charge.
In the end, I am more than willing to pay their slightly higher prices because they are walking distance to my house and the staff is knowledgeable and friendly. If I need to custom order something, they offer to before I can even get the question out. Highly recommended and happy shopping! -

I've been to the 5th Street Ace Hardware about 3-4 times now, and I am continually impressed with their customer service. The employees are always super friendly and knowledgeable. They always know the aisle number of the products that I am trying to find. What a great find in the city!

This Ace really is the helpful place. I used to live in Logan Circle and I thought Logan Hardware was pretty friendly, but this Ace blows them out of the water with customer service. Not only does someone greet you at the door and ask you what you are looking for, they will escort you to that service. If they do not have it, they will search for it, and ask you what color you'd like it in. This store is also HUGE and it has almost everything you could imagine. I saved myself a trip to Target by buying some large plastic bins here. Very useful store with terrific staff and customer service! I particularly like the older men that work there - very friendly and helpful.

I was a fan until I recently needed to return a defective (Ace brand) item. Due to snowstorm delays, it was a few days after the 30 days, and they refused to take it back, and were pretty rude about it. I wrote a complaint to customer service at Ace, and got no response, despite the promise of action within 24 hours. Ace has lost a customer over an $8 item.

Boy what a difference a shift makes! This was one of my favorite stores as far as customer service is concerned hence my last review. The people, as others have mentioned, are really awesome ..UNLESS YOU COME ON SATURDAY NIGHTS apparently. I went in tonight at 530 and was greeted by what I can only assume is brand new employees who haven't been trained in customer service or who just didn't care anymore. I got a piece of plywood cut, an activity that took approx 15 minutes when it should take 5. The man acted like I had ruined his day by asking him questions. Then I went downstairs to pay for the wood and the label wasn't on it. The desk clerk called upstairs to the one who cut the wood to ask for SKU number..long story short after several minutes of this I said I would just go up and get another piece of wood and bring it downstairs to be scanned. To my total horror the 3 other employees standing near by watched me (the only customer in the store and 5ft 4) walk upstairs, get a large piece of wood and haul it downstairs by myself. I was shocked in particular when the man upstairs simply handed me the wood to carry down instead of offering to do it for me. I mean with one customer and 4 grown employees there is no reason for me to do all the leg work. I actually forgot something at the store but refuse to go back until the normal, friendly helpful people are in. I will wake up early tomorrow to go in just to avoid the horrible service that is available in that store tonight. SO disappointed.
