Had a great night here with a friend. We sat at the bar for dinner, which turned out to be a great choice because we had a million servers running by asking us if we needed anything.
We ordered sandwiches and fries (tuna melt....yum!) and stayed for a couple of rounds of drinks. The atmosphere was nice and pub like. I would definitely go back. -

i love the burgers at the 5th quadrant! i've made a point to try any burger in portland that people say is their favorite, and i really think the 5th q has the best one. not to mention the beer! i gravitate towards stouts.
i was bummed when they changed the menu a bit and got rid of their one really good salad dressing, though. i haven't tried anything much other than the burger. why mess with a good thing?
the service can be awesome, depending on the server, of course. they do have some servers who've been there forever and they are super. -
Review from Andrew C.
If I'm drinking New Old Lompoc beer, chances are I'm about four or five deep, wearing a green jersey and priming my vocal chords at Jeld-Wen field. Drinking Proletariat Red like it's the only beer on Earth. Sometimes the Kick Axe, too.
But outside of the stadium? i hardly touch the stuff, or their other beers. I suppose if you're ever going to find me at a New Old Lompoc pub, your best chance of doing so would be to go to 5Q. And even then, trips are years apart. I think I've been here three times. Two year stretches between each.
Maybe it's an unfair assessment but I feel like there's a very thin line between the experience at New Old Lompoc pubs and the average McMenamins. This one seems a little further from that association than the other locations. Food here is what you'd expect for a pub. I've found the portions to be quite large at 5Q though the prices sometimes reflect that inflation.
Their beers are hit and miss for me. Sometimes I feel like they're only a few steps above that of Widmer and other times I really latch on to one of their brews and search it out even in grocery stores. I both like and dislike that they seem to be a little less focused on the hoppy rampage of many other Oregon brewers.
In any case, this is my preferred Lompoc location when I actually make it to one. It's cleaner, newer, more spacious and typically not full of the bro contingent found in the NW 23rd location.
They've seemingly got plenty of seating (which seems to all disappear in the evenings), a patio with heaters, booths, TVs, food (duh) and a nice location on Williams Ave where you can easily hop to some other places if you're so inclined. Pretty solid.Listed in: North Portland, N Williams Ave

The service here is quite often confusing, ambivalent, catty, loopy, and absent. I keep going here because my friends live in the neighborhood, but our last visit might have been the last straw.
Two servers kept coming to our table right after we sat down, telling us blatantly different things about whether the seat was open and if we needed to move or not. It was like a good cop/ bad cop routine from a movie. As we all sat, sort of stunned into silence and confusion by our conversations with both servers, the bad cop came over and made a super snide/catty comment. So we walked out. (We hadn't even ordered yet, so don't worry, we would never bail if we had owed them money.)
I'm not a masochist, so I'm probably not coming here again. I appreciate the few veganizable items on the menu, and I've had some good cocktails here, but I can't accept the way we've been treated multiple times, by multiple servers.
Also, none of Lompoc's beers are vegan, they use gelatin as a fining agent. -

I first went here with my wife a few months ago because I like Lompoc's beer but didn't want to deal with the New Old Lompoc location in NW (it's a bit of a dive). 5th Quadrant is a pretty quality establishment that served great beer on that night. A good result (I especially like their C Note imperial IPA). But we didn't have any food.
Fast forward to February 2012. We went to a show at the Melody Ballroom and tried to get some dinner at Toro Bravo. After being told there was a wait of at least 2 1/2 hours (get real, no food in PDX is worth that wait), we went up to 5th Quadrant. Seating was easy, the beer was great (as expected) and the food was wonderful. My wife had a salad and I had the meatloaf sandwich. I typically don't order meatloaf sandwiches anywhere because I'm very particular about this one dish (come on, nothing can replace your mom's meatloaf). But this stuff was really good. The fries were also nice. And the prices were right.
5th Quadrant is child-friendly and has a kids menu. They also have a lot of seating. While a fair amount of their seating is outdoors, it is well covered and protected and very well heated. I wouldn't hesitate to sit outside on even the rainiest day in Portland. -
Review from Alex K.
I'd really give 5th Quadrant 3 stars. but they get an extra star for Tightwad Tuesday - that's $2.50 pints all day. O hell yes!
Other than that, the food is above average but nothing is really great and the menu is kind of monotone.
And I kind of feel the same about the beer. Last time I was in I had an Oktoberfest, a C-Note and an LSD (Lompoc Special Draft) and somehow they all kind of tasted the same (the LSD was notably maltier). I think what their beers lack is aroma. Even the C-Note, which is made with 7 different hops and has a really high IBU rating, manages to be flat to the nose.
It's probably just my beer snobbery getting in the way, but with so many options in PDX, why not be choosy? If you haven't been, definitely go check it out and form an opinion on your own. oh - and go on Tuesday -

Needed some grub with a five year old in tow. Just discovered Williams St area and stumbled upon a Lompoc in the area. Sweet!
Really nice atmosphere. Great building and environs (adjoined to Pix). Outdoor seating (picnic tables and sheet metal siding) is inviting and fresh. Solid Kid menu. Wanted a lite beer and Fools Golden Ale fit the bill. Tuna melt was delicious as was everything else. Service was attentive and above average... -

I have been here many times, different times of day...food and service have been good, not chatty, but not rude and indifferent. I can see how it might get that way on a busy night. I am partial to the pulled pork and Sicilian grinder type sandwich. Beer is decent. In the summer the berry cobbler is addictive...seriously. overall great neighborhood haunt.

Posting for my friend:
Lompoc had horrible service. Our server not only didn't serve us, she seemed to make sure me and my friends would not enjoy ourselves. She dropped my fork on the ground and then didn't believe me later when I asked if I could have a fork to eat my food with. She rooted around the table and looked under the napkins for the fork she swore she brought out. I ordered a lager and after about 30 minutes without anything to drink she came back and told me they were out. I asked for no tomatoes, I got tomatoes. She dropped our bread all over the table and promised to bring more and never did. My friend ordered a sample tray of beer and was promised the 8th beer on the tray but never got it delivered. We were ignored when we were finished so it took forever to pay. Decent beer and decent food but I will never be back and I would never recommend anybody to go here. -

Review from Erin N.
Went here for an early dinner with my mom. Neither of us were super happy with our food- this is not to say it was bad, just not amazing. My mom loves reubens, so that's what she ordered. In her opinion it was a typical reuben- meat, cheese, kraut, bread, & dressing. I'm not sure what makes a reuben amazing, as I am not a connoisseur, but according to mom it was just ok.
My burger was the same. It wasn't bad- meat, bread, cheese, dressing, veggies. As long as nothing is vitally wrong with those ingredients, your burger is a-ok. What was interesting to me was that I wasn't asked how I wanted my burger cooked. This may be a Portland thing, I'm not sure..so I ended up with a very well done burger.
Both of us were quite happy with the fries, and unfortunately neither of us ordered beers. Will be back to try some Lompoc. -

Looked like a regular restaurant, but when I took a bite of my blueberry roasted turkey sandwich, omg. So. Good. So creative! Not cranberry, but BLUEBERRY. Simply delicious.
There is a phantom booth in the restaurant, with cold icy breeze blowing in. No one knows where the draft is coming from. spooky! -

I WANT to love this place, it's in my neighborhood, good beer, okay food and the best trivia host in town; every time they lose me with the service!
Scatterbrained, impolite, inconsiderate. This does not apply to all the servers, but when you go to a place and have to pray to not get certain people: not a good sign. Waiting tables is one of the hardest jobs in the world, I get that, know it. How many bloody chances is enough??? I've given them at least 20 and come away 15 times annoyed. I'm not alone in this; it has been crossed off the potential meeting place for all my crowd.
**Have not been to side bar yet, but would take a lot to get me there. -

This is my favorite of the Lompoc locations. I think it has the best service of all the Lompocs too. I loved the clam chowder festival they hosted recently (though I heard that they actually mixed up some of the samples from some restaurants!). Sampling the delicious beer before the festival eh? My favorite is C-Note. Super hoppy and delicious!
I love that they added SideBar recently. This place is a very chill place to hang out before heading out for whatever evening activities await you. Do take note that it is only open Friday and Saturdays. Inside is a cozy space with a fireplace and board games where the most interesting beers in the Lompoc line up await. Also I just learned from my recent visit Saturday that they try to have a brewer there on Saturday nights. We spoke to Miles who was very informative and gave us a good rundown of what was on tap. I tried a sample of the Merlot barrel aged Norman Invasion and decided it was too sweet for a full pint. Instead I split a Dagda with my boyfriend, this is a red ale that is very well balanced. It's description said it was smoky, which normally puts me off, but was actually very subtle. -

Went there with a friend at prime time on a Friday night. It was busy but not entirely packed. We grabbed a table just inside the bar side. It took forever and a day to get some service. The server gal was awful. It sucks when you are completely ignored. I think it's even worse when you're acknowledged but every action was a 5-10 minute wait if it even happened at all.
Here's a quick recap of how our visit went: We sat down at a table that wasn't cleared yet. Server stops says, "Oh I'll be back to wipe your table". 10 minutes later she brings menus but never wipes down the table. 10 minutes later a different, more attentive server said, "Gee, you've been sitting here awhile, has anyone helped you?" We answer no and proceed to give him our drink and food order. 5 minutes later the original bad server brings our beer. 10 minutes later she brings our food. We're about 3/4 of the way done and she asked if we still wanted our side of mayo (which my friend ordered). We finish our food and beer and the bad server swiftly gives us the bill and clears our plates. We pay and leave.
The chicken bacon club sandwich was good and I enjoyed a golden ale but the service was terribly slow and inattentive. Overall I give it a Meh. -

I came here for happy hour after a long train ride and a visit with some family. My aunt referred me over here and oh boy I was glad I did.
First off the server took a bit to come over to our table but when she did she was very on it and attentive. She was knowledgeable about all the beers they had been brewing there, but I don't know enough about beers to tell her exactly what I wanted. She offered me samples of the beers (So good, so varied!) I ended up with the Axe... something, I don't know, but it was delicious
I ordered a 5Q burger which was well worth it (especially at happy hour price), and my mother ordered some chicken strips. I didn't get to try those but she liked the flavour of them and the sauce they provided. She also got the Sangria cocktail which I got a sip of and mmmm my oh my. -

My friends and I came here for the excellent tightwad Tuesday all night happy hour. I love those Lompoc beers!
The place was busy, but there was no wait for a table. Our waitress was rather stressed out, and the service would have cost the review a point, but the other waiters seemed to be more than willing to pitch in, and actually talked to each other so that there was no doubling up on orders or any other mishaps. Surprisingly to me, the place was filled with hipster moms and dads and their young (under 5) children, as well as pre-teens doing homework with some fries. By 7 pm though, that crowd all went home, and was generally quiet (the young kids) and did not make the place any more chaotic than it already was with piles of people trying to get $2 beverages after work.
The beers are great, as always I love that LSD. I liked the hummus plate as well. I definitely recommend this place. -

Well we TRIED to go to Tasty n' Sons but it was full and the wait was too long. Luckily this place was nearby so we went there for lunch instead.
I tried the Fool's Golden Ale and neither of us liked it. To me it tasted
like PBR (yuck) and to my boyfriend it tasted like soap. Yuck. We
sampled two others and settled on the Condor Pale Ale. Much better.
For lunch I ordered the BBQ Pulled Pork Sandwich: Lean pork shoulder slowly braised in Sockeye Stout, shredded then served on a toasted pub bun and topped with BBQ sauce and homemade coleslaw.
My boyfriend had the talian Grinder, which was my second choice. It was grilled capicola ham and salami with sautéed peppers & onions, mozzarella, tomatoes and basil vinaigrette on a hoagie roll. I had a bite of his sandwich and it was tasty. The cheese and ham combo was stellar-no greasy and the ham wasn't stringy or tough to chew like it sometimes can get.
Next time we go there I'm definitely getting the Italian Grinder. My sandwich was flavorful without being overly messy and sweet. Sometimes with pulled pork it can have too much sauce (which is just a bunch of sugar, let's be honest). -

I visited with a small group of people for Tightwad Tuesday. A really nice selection of both beer and food.
I had the portobello sandwich, which was messy, but so tasty! The mushrooms were marinated just perfectly! I had two different beers, but made the mistake of ordering a 10oz. for the second one, which turned out costing more than a pint. So just a head's up! Drink up and be merry! -

This review is specifically for Tightwad Tuesdays. Read on with caution.
Portland has so many good food and drink deals. Happy hours all over the place. Special days at places where pints of good local beer are $2. Other days with other drink specials. So many choices. How does one choose? It is a tough life.
I don't get up to this part of town very often, but some friends were talking about getting some beers and mentioned Tightwad Tuesdays. $2.50 pints of Lompoc beer all day. Certainly not that far away and well worth the drive for good brew.
Upon getting inside we were immediately greeted by our server. She told us the beer specials and we had a moment to decide. There were 3 this night. Bock, barley wine and the Centennial IPA on nitro. I had the bock as they only have it for a very limited time. If you enjoy this style of beer, get over there soon. It probably won't be around for too much longer. Nice deep amber color. Good malty flavor. Strong at almost 8% ABV, but doesn't taste like it. A good winter beer.
Moving onto the food, I could have easily just gone for the burger, but I decided not to. That is always the easy choice. My friends mentioned the Grilled Portobello Mushroom sandwich. They said it was good, but messy. They were right. I decided to eat it with a fork and knife as the mushroom was a bit slippery on the roll (that sounds dirty) and I thought for sure if I picked it up, it would end up on the floor. Here is the description: Marinated and grilled portobello mushroom topped with smoked gouda, sautéed peppers and onions. Served on a toasted Kaiser bun with lettuce, tomato and a spicy remoulade. You have a choice of cup of soup, fries or coleslaw for your side. I had the fries. The sandwich was very tasty. If you like mushrooms and I know not everyone does, this is a good version. I would suggest going the fork and knife route.
This is a brewery. Not a large place. Kind of noisy, but that doesn't really bother me. Good, fast and friendly service. Very good beer. Good pub food. They aren't doing anything groundbreaking food-wise, but what they do, they do it well. -

This is what Mcmen's USED to be like.
Speciality beers, good service and GREAT food (yes, I swear people, there was a time when Mcmens had good food).
I've been hearing that the burger is pretty much the best ever. Well, apparently its so good that everyone had been ordering before us so no buns. I got the fish and chips and my pallie got the burger on a wheat toast. They were both excellent. Despite the lack of bun, the burger was superb. My fish and chips were good, but what made the dish beyond amazing was the coleslaw and tarter sauce - two things I normally loathe. They were both fresh and spicy. YUM.
I haven't been to the other locations, but I'm nervous that they'll start expanding like mad like that OTHER local burger/beer chain and lose all service and quality. Please 5Q, keep it real. -

I had one meal here. While a part of me wants to come back before rushing to judgment...the devil on my shoulder says eff it...go for it. Popped in here with AC to grab an early meal. I just wanted a snack since I planned on eating more later. In my never ending quest to try as many samples of calamari from as many places as humanly possible before I die...I felt fortunate to find it at the top of the menu...BAM! Smack in the face. It's a no brainer...calamari it will be.
I wasn't able to have a beer yet, so I ordered some RC instead. Points. The calamari arrives...looks damn good. That's where the good ends. Whoever cooked this hasn't learned the art of frying calamari. It was chewy, crunchy and only moderately palatable. The sauce was decent...thankfully...as it offset the badness of frying.
We then proceeded to wait. No more refills. No more check ins. No server anywhere to be found. Plenty of other servers passed by but we were left there, waiting. I finally got up and our waitress was next to the bar. In a classic example of Murphy's Law...it's at the moment that I finally say WTF and go to retrieve my check that she happens to be on her way. She seemed almost miffed at the notion I would go looking for my check. Something like 15 minutes had passed and I didn't think it was out of the ordinary to expect better.
The place is well recommended as far as I can tell. Good for them. Maybe they had an off day. For me though, bad food and bad service add up to a bad review.
I will say this though. It's a good location. They have a great beer selection aside from the Old Lompoc, which are pretty damn good on their own (never had 'em here but at other spots, yes). I went in really wanting to like everything...but you know...between the calamari being so bad (perhaps some of the worst I've ever had) and the waitress being so inattentive and cold...I'm not coming back unless it's just to have a beer with friends. If that happens, it probably won't be on my suggestion.Listed in: Yeeps - The List, The Cabinet of Calamari, DOUCHE DOUCHE…

That idylllic life as I knew it is gone....with life so sweet and easygoing, and I could reach work by simply biking 2.2 miles down one street to the Children's Hospital. Walking or taking a bus to destinations was accomplished with the utmost of ease.
Now, being back in the Bay Area, that sort of simple existence has faded and reliance upon a big ozone-harming, fuelly-dependent car has come back to the forefront (you like that one, didja now!?).
5th Quadrant: a fun spot along the Van-Will (Vancouver/Williams) corridor that is in fact on the Portland biking route of the city! Large place for microbrews and pub grub both outside or in....happy hours that offer decent deals and above average food. Prices are greatly affordable, and the vibe is very cool.
The offbeat nerd in me has done everything from coming with girlfriends to catch up on our lives during busy, LOUD happy hours, to playing chess (uh, yes.. chess) after dinner.....even take part in their goofy game nights... I recall one being a trivia night. It's great, because in Portland, it's all cool, and being yourself has never been easier, with societal pressures just off off off!!!!
The beers are rather yummy (read: C-Note), and the crowd tends to be younger 20/30's. Portions of food are generous, and the grill seems to get it right, most of the time. I miss it, terribly. This place was one of the foundational premier members that came to roost along the now popular corridor, before members like Lincoln and EaT (the oyster place) came.
Pix Patisserie, the fine chocolatier, is just next door for super $$ splurging on sweets. now *that's* SUH WEEET.
NoPo (North Portland), live on forever!

The food at 5th Quadrant is good! I loved how many veggie friendly and healthy options there were on the menu. We got the hummus appetizer which was just so much food, easily enough for an entree. I was so excited when they put the hummus appetizer down on the table, everything looked so delicious....freshly cut carrots (not the baby carrots!), red onion, olives, large cucumber slices, big chunks of feta, tomatoes, and toasted pita bread. On top of the hummus was this spicy peppery topping that just added the most awesome kick to it. It was all so delicious!
For my entree (which I could barely eat even a portion of) I got the grilled tomato and cheese on sourdough bread. It came with either soup, sauerkraut, or fries. You could also upgrade to a salad or a larger amount of soup. None of the options sounded all that tasty to me so I got the fries and gave them to Paul. (OK, I had exactly five of the fries and they were fantastic....I admit it!) I was only able to eat half of the grilled cheese but it was delicious, I loved how there was just as much tomato as there was cheese on it.
Paul got the much hyped burger and a bowl of clam chowder. He thought everything was great, he really enjoyed it. He loved the hummus appetizer too, especially the spicy pepper topping.
We will totally be back there, everything was delicious. Our waitress wasn't the friendliest person in the world but whatever....we didn't care all that much. -

Absolute worst service in recent memory. I actually tipped 10%. It hurt me in the soul parts. I never, ever, ever tip under 20. EVER.
Our server obviously forgot to put in our food order and an hour after we'd ordered had an audible conversation with the kitchen asking them to put a rush on what she'd finally remembered to put in. After hearing her loudly tell the kitchen how she'd forgotten and begging them to fix it, she came to our table and started complaining about how it was all the kitchen's fault, how they were constantly losing orders, etc. She had another server run our food, didn't come back to check on us, didn't ask if we'd like another drink, and didn't make eye contact when dropping the un-asked-for check.
I won't be back, which is a real shame because I really enjoyed the food and beers. Great reubens. -

I always forget about this place. I was hankerin' for a big salad and a beer today, and on my way to McMenamin's I remembered the 5th Quadrant. Lucky. The food and service are 10 times better.
It's near the Mississippi neighborhood, so you immediately expect the staff to have attitude, but that is so untrue. They're cool, and really attentive. The Quadrant is owned by the same folks who brought you the New Old Lompoc and Hedge House, so you know you'll be able to get some good beer in this joint. With names like LSD and Fool's Golden Ale, you can't go wrong. I ordered the Spinach Salad, and not only was it beautiful, it was yummy. How can you go wrong with avocado, cheese and bacon on a salad. You can't, I tell ya. Oh, and get the basil vinagrette dressing. It's bomb. Other items on the menu include appetizers and sandwiches, and several vegetarian options for you non-carnivores.
This is a good spot for groups, too. They have quite a bit of seating, including a nice patio, and a really long booth up front which you could literally fit 15 people in. The patio is awesome in the summer, but it's also a cozy spot in the winter too. They have games on the shelves by the front door. Come here when it's raining to play scrabble and have some pints. A great way to spend a rainy Portland day. -

From the people who brought you the Old Lompac and the Hedge House, the 5Q has all the flavor plus+. It's great for groups, even groups with kids, and the selection of food and drink are two bumps up from a typical pub. The location is easy to access and if you're tired of hitting the usual Mississippi or Alberta stops, this is worth the literal compromise between the two. Pix is next door (interesting it's the same at Division location) so you can stop for sugary treats and coffee on the way out. Sure to become a Portland staple as it matures. Nice work!

Their burgers are good but a little over-spiced which took away from the beef. The fries were decent and the beer is good. The server could have been less apathetic and checked in a bit more.

Portland, OR
The cleverly named 5th Quadrant is part of the New Old Lompoc family of brew pubs; my personal favorite is the upper NW 23rd location, followed closely by their NoPo, or "5th Quadrant" spot.
With the 5Q, as with many local brew pubs, the question becomes: "Is this a great place for beer that also has food, or a great place for food that also has beer?" I'd say it's definitely the former.
In my opinion Lompoc has one of the better selections of beers of any of the local breweries - I'd happily drink a Condor Pale, Centennial IPA, C-Note Imperial IPA, or Proletariat Red any day of the week, and twice last Friday! Their seasonals can be hit or miss, but that's more based on the choice of styles rather than the quality of the brew. They also have a full bar and a number of guest taps, but My Lady found their wine selection somewhat lacking.
Food is a step above pub grub - they have a bunch of interesting sandwiches in the $7-10 range, a limited selection of pastas (none of which ever appeal to me as they seem to always be with cream-based sauces), some ripping halibut Fish 'n Chips (a tick over $10), and a decent 1/2 lb burger ($8 with your choice of cheese) - $1 adds a few strips of bacon, which complement the smoked gouda nicely. They also have a few meat-centric entrees available after 5pm, but vegetarians will probably be alright with the sandwiches, salads, and pastas.
The deck out front is quite nice and great for groups, but the patio tables seem packed a little tightly. I don't know what their "official" policy is, but one couple in our party brought their well behaved dog and the staff had no problems with it.
On our last visit our party numbered 6 humans and 1 canine, so we took over 2.5 tables. As is often the case, the men and women migrated to separate tables, but we would have been happy to have just one server - yet they decided to continue the gender segregation by having a male server wait on the table of guys, while a female took care of the ladies.
The guy was on top of things, took and delivered our orders much quicker, and attentively monitored how much beer we had in our glasses. On the other hand, the female server seemed a bit distracted, punted on the question of whether certain items were gluten-free, and just basically underperformed.
5Q is a solid choice for good beers and better than average food, but I don't see myself going out of my way to stop here, especially as the weather turns more Portlandy and the patio becomes less desiriable (though it is heated).
However, if I lived in the neighborhood, I could see making regular stops here, and I'd definitely take advantage of their "to-go" jars of beer!Listed in: N Portland

5th Quadrant (5Q for short) is one of my "go to" places! I'm a huge fan of Lompoc beers and 5Q is the closest Lompoc Brewery to my home. The huge booths have ample room for large groups, but if you prefer, you can sit outside on their enclosed heated patio when the air grows cold, or outside cafe' style when the weather is good.
While all their beers are above average in my opinion, the C-Note may just be my favorite IPA in Portland. With off the chart IBU's, it's just what the doctor ordered! There are always 5-6 delicious Lompoc beers on tap with a rotating seasonal to round out the list. There is also a full bar which is great as well! The bartenders are always friendly and have never failed to greet me with a smile.
The same can't be said for the waitstaff, but they try. lol!!! I have a love/hate relationship with the food at 5Q. I've had some really good experiences and some sub-par. The menu is pretty standard pub food. I wish they would mix it up sometimes as it seems the food is much better at the other Lompoc locations. (New Old Lompoc on NW23rd has GREAT food!) That being said, 9 times out of 10 I'm at 5Q for the beer and not the chow.
And if you get a chance, be sure to check out 5Q's "Sidebar" which is just around the corner on Williams. Special small batches of non-menu beers make this place a MUST for Happy Hour on Fridays! -

Remember the Arctic Blast - how could you forget?!? I'm talking about Arctic Blast 1. The first that took us all by surprise. Well, I was hosting my visiting parents in my Mississippi house and the only place to take them was 5th Quadrant - for dinner.
My were we all surprised. We ordered the nachos & guac - excellent. I had the (Fresh) fish and chips - crunchy and tasty. My parents had the burger - a legend - and my husband had the Rueben. Everything was great - tasty, hot and hit the spot. Beers are great too. We even took some home in a Mason Jar. Fun.
Good food, good beer. What more could you ask for on a snowy day. -

Went to Fifth Quadrant last night, rainy night, cool, wanted a warm, homey place with good food and good beer. Couldn't have been better. Friendly young woman behind the bar, friendly customers at the bar, great Walla Walla onion appetizer, great black bean chili, and that beer! For me, the hoppy C-note is perfect, the Lompoc Strong Draft almost as good, the Proletariat Red a little maltier but great too, and a seasonal Imperial Porter we also enjoyed. Lompoc places aren't frilly, no franchise plastic all around, just good people, good food, good beer.

We tried 5th Quadrant for the first time last night, and it was good. I had one of their light seasonal beers called Blitzen, which was quite tasty. Our server was awesome - he was really helpful with information about the menu and about food in general in Portland because we're new to the area. I'd give him five stars, but I'm only rating the restaurant in this review.
The calamari (yes, I'm back to eating seafood again) and the tomato pesto salad dressing were both quite good and my hummus wrap was okay (keep in mind that I'm a bit of a snob when it comes to hummus, and I try it everywhere I go). In retrospect, I might have chosen something different.
My boyfriend was slightly less impressed with his burger (which was well done), and the fries, which were home made, but cooked in oil that may not have been hot enough because they were a bit spongy.
Overall, it seemed like a great place to go with kids because the atmosphere was casual and comfortable. There was even a quasi-outdoor seating area where a couple of patrons had their dogs. - That is a very cool feature to any restaurant, I'd say. ;-) -

I love hamburgers, but not when they are way over-seasoned, over-cooked, and over-priced.
I will not be back anytime soon. -

If you have a bacon cheesburger that cost 1050, it had better not come with one half-assed sliced of bacon and be an overcooked dry puck.
Worthy of a king. Here King, c'mere boy!
They do have good beer, and the atmosphere is pretty swell.
Also everyone defends their salads, if you're into that sort of thing. -

It's alright, not great. I had the Green Meanie, with cucumber and gin, it was tasty enough, and cocktails are 1 buck off during happy hour and all day Saturday and Sunday. Pints are also cheaper during happy hour and Sat/Sun, and they seemed to have a good selection. Our table ordered "the hoppiest beer you have" and "the least hoppy beer you have," and everybody was happy. The food was totally meh. I had the hamburger with blue cheese, and it was not very cheesy, just had crumbles sprinkled on top. The fries were a bit burned. Others had the meatloaf, fish and chips, french dip, salads, lots of different stuff, and it all got a resounding, "Meh, it's ok." It's bar food, not gourmet.
The service was fine.
Good drinking place, meh food, good service. -

This review is specifically for the side bar, which is connected to 5th quadrant through the brewery.
I went to a surprise birthday here, and the birthday boy arrived early, because it's his favorite bar and he wanted to get his drink on. So it became one of those rolling surprises: "Oh, look who it is! What a coincidence. Oh look, another coincidence! Hey, wait a minute..."
They serve beers here that they don't serve at the main restaurant, or anywhere else. When you drink them you feel special. I felt special with an Arctic Blast, which was nice and smooth with a sort of smoky barley finish.
Apparently they don't usually serve food here. It's all about the drinking. Either they've changed their mind a bit, or they made an exception for the birthday boy. The food was from 5th Quadrant, of course, and was happy hour fries, beer-cheese dip and a hummous plate. Extra tasty!
Other bonuses: the Blazers were winning on a plasma screen, and there were nice (clean) leather couches in front of a... gas fireplace! So lovely on a typical Oregon day. The lack of windows made me feel weird at first, but I soon sunk into the beer cave atmosphere and enjoyed it completely.
