Category: Coffee & Tea [Edit]
Neighborhood: Brooklyn/Park SlopeI walked by this magical little diner yesterday hoping by chance the rumor wasn't true. But alas, 5th Avenue Coffee Shop is in fact CLOSED. I will confess that I mourned the loss of their greasy eggs and home fries, their crispy bacon and watery coffee, with a brief moment of silence as I passed. I'm not quite sure how to find a replacement. I have not yet moved on. And my greatest regret is, after meaning to come here for months, that I did not get that one last chance to say goodbye.

Hella greasy, hella cheap. If you're hanged over there really isn't a better place to eat. I suppose my only complaint is that it isn't closer to my girlfriend's apartment.
Sometimes they close when they feel like it, and not at the posted hours. Get there earlier to ensure you get your eggs.
PS - this is a good place to eavesdrop on Yankees/Mets arguments during the summer.
You don't often find authentic retro but this place is it. The name of the place on the health certificate is, "Donut Coffee Shop LLC." What a great name! I asked the waitress how long she's been working there. Her response, "32 years."
I've only had eggs here but they are really good. I ask for over medium and that is what I get. I can't tell you how many times that is not the case. But I'm really intrigued by the Kronomatic Gyro rotisserie. The Hamilton Standard milkshake element looks like its been there for 32 years too. And there are dozens of other retro elements hiding on shelves and on the walls...
Alberto's review is right this place is small. Not the smallest I've seen in New York, that would have to go to the late "The Bagel" which was on W3rd street in Manhattan. But this place has a similar breakfast feel, like say a park slope version of "La Bonbonniere" on 8th Ave in Manhattan.

Brunch with the ladyfriend is always a treat, but I've worked the line long enough to know that $13 for French toast is utter horseshit, unless it's stuffed with cream cheese, amber gris, and Lebanese blonde hash. But even so, that'd better come with a bloody mary!
That said, Park Slope can be difficult for brunch. 5th Ave Coffee Shop is the tiniest diner I've ever chanced upon, but it's size is made up by charm, speed, price, and accuracy.
Their (or his, as I imagine the cook was the owner) french toast was a refreshing $2.95 and the hash browns (oddly, not on the menu) were probably another $1.50. Add another buck for coffee. The most expensive thing in this place was a bacon cheeseburger deluxe, ringing in at a resounding $6.50, but even it comes with fries. Maybe the gyro was more,..
This is the classic All-American Greek-run diner that I wish were open at 3 am to serve me eggs, toasts, and other booze-sopping agents. My only beef about the place was the absence of biscuits and gravy, but what can ya do....
