My roommate's dad brought me a box of those mouthwatering square truffles over two years ago.  Normally not a fan of dark chocolate, I fell in love with those cocoa-dusted creamy squares (88% cacao!).  When I realized I'd be able to spend 6 hours in NYC this month, I KNEW I had to stop by 5th Ave. It turns out there are a few locations, but the label on my old box of truffles (which now houses my coin collection) indicated the chocolates I'd first encountered came from the 3rd Ave location, I had a rather strong inclination to go back to that one :)

It was a good thing, too, because the nice old man who worked at the counter plied us with several samples of those amazing truffle pieces!  :) Some were refrigerated, some weren't... I personally prefer those truffles refrigerated.  They're easier to deal with that way, and they have more time to kind of dissolve in your mouth. Since my party knew we'd be transporting the chocolates for a few days as we traveled, we were pleased to learn that they'll keep for a while and not just melt down and become a mess if it gets too warm. In the fridge, they'll last about half a year to boot!

While on the pricey side, I'd strongly recommend you stop by if you get the chance.  Even if you don't buy any chocolate, the different things they've got on display are pretty amazing to look at.

THANK YOU VALENTINES DAY, because people like to give chocolate & when they give 5th Avenue Chocolatier chocolates...they've got my approval!

i got to try the chocolate truffles covered in cocoa... MELT IN YOUR MOUTH goodness (although perhaps not as melt-y as the "no chewing allowed" chocolates sold at the bryant park holiday shops!)

i definitely want to come into the store one day!!

I found this great place a few years ago when I worked nearby. I visited the place about once every two months or so... Everytime I go inside the store, they have samples to try. And I always try the samples. =) I don't work nearby or in the city anymore as of now. I kind of miss the place. Recently, I purchased a Groupon deal, $20 for $40 worth of chocolates. I need to get me some truffles! =D

I mainly purchased truffles when I visit. The truffles, both flavored and cocoa covered are absolutely delicious! =D When I leave the store I almost always purchase a box of cocoa covered truffles. They have three box sizes for the cocoa covered truffles. Small for $15, medium for $25, and large for $35. Yeah they are a little pricey but heyyyyy a little self-indulgence does not hurt... It's call self-care! =D

Cocoa truffle samples are the real deal. Melt in your mouth goodness. $1 a truffle is pricey but it's worth it. Small store but lots of selection and as mentioned by other reviewers their truffles are stored in a glass refrigerated case which makes for fresh truffles every time. If I need a chocolate treat near work, this is the place.

I came here for ice cream this past summer, did the taste test, oh my god my tummy couldn't resist, so I ordered  a large!

The customer rep gave me a sample of their truffles - it was like heaven on 3rd avenue.  Consider me sold.

Used a groupon for the chocolate covered strawberries. Not sure if it was because of the Valentine's day rush or that I used a groupon, but the strawberries were bad and the presentation subpar. All 20 strawberries were on the verge of spoiling! They were soft, slimy, and had an over-ripened flavor. It was really unfortunate because they were supposed to be the romantic treat for my boyfriend and my early-valentines day dinner :( Two stars because the chocolate wasn't bad. But I've definitely had better quality chocolate. I've pretty much made better myself. We ended up peeling the chocolate off to make the best of it.

Amazing truffles but customer service is terrible and workers are inept -especially the manager. He actually asked me to go to the Staples next door to print out my Groupon because they have an issue with Groupon and don't want to accept mobile (non-printed) Groupons. He even made me wait a few minutes until he finished his lunch and I had to watch him wash his plastic take-out container in the back. Gross. Talk about insanely unprofessional! Get rid of the employees and this place would be perfect.

    Decor: 4/5
-Loud door chime when you walk in!
-The place was small than I had anticipated but offered a variety
-The truffles are properly stored in the back in a large fridge and in cabinets out of the sun

    Service: 4/5
    -Very friendly service
-I was offered a sample of truffle immediately after walking in

    Chocolate: 5/5
    -Reasonable prices
-The truffle sample melted instantly in my mouth and I knew I had to buy it. A box of 8 cost $15, double that and it costs only $23.

-What made me a fan of 5th Avenue Chocolatiere was a giant tooth of a molar made in white chocolate. That just made my day. Thanks for thinking about us dentists!
-Aside from the tooth, there is also plaques for lawyers & doctors.
-I wasn't a fan of the flavored truffles. Go with the cocoa covered truffles!

The danger of naming your shop after a location is that one day you may no longer be on that street. I found 5th Avenue Chocolatiere on 3rd Ave, but that's no biggie.

I wanted a little sweet for dessert after lunch and thought a few pieces of truffle would do nicely. I tried the dark tiramisu, dark chocolate, and coconut. The quality of the truffles were average for high end chocolate. Nice chocolate, but not particularly rich and creamy. When I'm eating truffles, I need to feel as if I'm popping little balls of luxury in my mouth. Didn't get that feeling here.

I know they're not on 5th. Avenue...get over it. However, I also know that their stuff rocks. I have to admit I'm a creature of habit, even with the latest Groupon purchase maybe I should have tried some of the other offerings.

But nooo, I went my favorites and that's fine. Melt in your okay my mouth almond bark, I like the mix of milk and dark chocolate. If you like turtles the pecan caramels are (warning Yelp overused word) yummy. They also have all sorts of other fun stuff, a metrocard or maybe a chocolaty NYC skyline.

With or without the Groupon, I'm a buyer!

My goodness, what an assortment of chocolate in such a small store.
Truffles, my goodness the truffles. The cashier/ice cream scooper/manager/ (& all his other positions) offered with a smile. Delicious piece of truffle, smooth and soft while slowly melting.
I ordered the $30 assortment for 1lb of truffles (it sounds expensive, but the truffles are amazing!). Recommend the Hazlenut, Caramel, and Tiramisu (forgot which one, there were 3 kinds).
On top of this, I had an order of 3.5 scoops of ice cream for $4. More truffles I say! Vanilla or Chocolate with truffles were an option. Truffle-overdosage at this point.
An excellent place to come to for some fine chocolate. Especially with a Groupon!

Walked here from the hotel on 44th Ave. Easy to find. Small shop, friendly folks. Got a box of their "award winning" truffles. They keep the truffles in a freezer, which is a godsend, as they lasted two days in a hotel room and  a long travel day back to Florida.

So, how's the chocolate? My wife crooned in ecstasy on the first bite and exclaimed, "this is the best chocolate I've ever had!"

    Get some.

I was familiar with 5th Ave Chocolatiere from their signature truffles, which I'll get back to in a second. But I was most recently drawn into their store by their summer offer of ice cream. Quality frozen treats in Midtown East can be difficult to find, and new options are always welcome.

I naturally assumed their chocolate flavor would be their best, but it didn't end up exciting me much. The pistachio fared better, the little chunks of actual nuts providing a lot of flavor. Overall, however, the ice creams were only okay, their sole advantage over, say, Nino's Positano's gelato being that they hold up better under the heat.

So that was that. But let me return to those truffles. 5th Ave Chocolatiere offers a variety of truffles and other chocolate confections, most of which are, like the ice cream, middling but acceptable. Of the classically inspired options, I'm partial to the cream cheesed graham cracker covered in milk chocolate. But it's their signature truffles that they offer free samples of, and for a damn good reason: they are extraordinary little squares of pure chocolate ganache that evaporate on your tongue like a summer love.

But you shouldn't take my word for it. Instead, consider that I've given various ladies lots of chocolate gifts from NYC over the years. In the general sense, MarieBelle's confections make them giggle, Jacques Torres' variety box makes them grin stupidly, La Maison Du Chocolat's arm-and-a-leg luxury set makes them gasp, Kee's chocolates inspire them into a gratified embrace... But one bite of a 5th Ave signature truffle, boxed so very simply, arouses most women into orgasming on the spot.

Use this knowledge wisely. After all, with great power comes great responsibility.

Probability of return within 1 year: 60%

"This Chocolate Was So Good It Was UNFORGIVABLE!!"

It was nearly Christmas and all through the house... some bitchasses were requesting chocolate for their stocking stuffers so I had to go ALLL the way from my apartment in Inwood, Manhattan, down here to this little hellhole. It's the Savior's birthday and they're making me walk the Trail of Tears just to satisfy a sweet tooth? Give me a break!

Anyway. It just so happened that I got an email from http://Groupon.com that very same day, offering something like... $30 worth of 5th Avenue Chocolatiere chocolate for $15. I purchased the deal and was thinking I had it made when all the sudden I realize this place didn't have chocolate squirrels. GIVE ME A BREAK!

What the hell is a guy supposed to do? No chocolate squirrels?? Are you KIDDING me?? You're a CHOCOLATIERE! (How the hell are you supposed to pronounce that word, anyway? This isn't France, Mr. Cocoa.) Anyway. I get to the store and am looking around and I see a book-box filled with little squares. What the hell is this, I ask. It's truffles, says the lady. Truffles?? I think she was giving me some attitude.

WHAT THE HECK IS A TRUFFLE, ho?? She explains. She offers a sample. I ate that shiz like it was going out of style. I took a bite out of that like killer whale Tilikum took a bite out of his personal trainer. What did he have to be upset about? All day in a personal pool with a trainer? Do you know how much personal trainers cost these days? Gat damn spoiled whale.

So I purchase these truffles in their box-that-looks-like-a-book and am set for life. I only had to pay like $2 because of that damn coupon. I get back home, put that shit in the fridge, and then when it comes time to exchange stockings, I don't even remember to give it to them.

WHAT IS THE DEAL?? It's like that truffle crack went to my brain and my subconscious didn't want to give that shiz up for no man. Anyway. It was a good truffle. I might go back - if they ever change their name to something easier to pronounce and move locations.

    UNFORGIVABLE.

Hands down one of the best chocolate shops in the city. I pop by regularly for a treat at lunch and have sampled nearly everything in their case (seriously!) and have yet to be disappointed. Not to mention the truffles are to die for.... They package them very nicely so I usually buy them as gifts for birthdays etc.

Highly recommend, and will probably be stopping by at lunch today :)

I'll reiterate here that the "5th Avenue" portion of this chocolatiere's name is misleading (because they are now located on 3rd Ave).  Minor details, HA !

Walk the 4 extra avenues over, you'll thank me for it.  These are the BEST truffles (better yet, the best chocolates) I have eaten in New York !!!  I have only tried the chocolate truffles (made of Belgian dark chocolate), but the quality and pure richness of these treats warrant me dedicating a 5-star rating for this chocolate shop !

How did I discover this chocolatiere?  I didn't, I snagged some truffles that a lovely friend had given as a gift to someone other than myself, hahaha.

If you forget to bring your wallet when visiting the store, ask for a sample.

Gently I float. Lazily sauntering, prompted by pangs of fury which calling is all too familiar and deadly. Sweets. In a dreamlike state I enter the small store; no smell welcomes me, no sugar whiff intrudes my nostrils to act as pariah of the sublime dulcification that is bound to happen. Bound. The man who works there looks at me estranged; I struggle to speak, I must, and yet my voice is unrecognizable even to myself.

    "T R U F F L E S ?"

I ask the man who is offering me this tiny cubes in a plate. He nods. I taste the little dark truffles and the strong dark chocolate taste dissolves in my mouth. He waves his hand at the display, I watch. Assorted in the cabinets are lots and lots of chocolates sculpted and shaped in various forms; television screens, footballs, shoes, hardware utensils, doctor utensils, sports, animals, you name it. I look at the walls to reassure myself that they are not made out of candy and chocolate also, but no; everything but the house. Nevertheless, this is as close as I ever felt to Grimm's tale of Hansel & Gretel http://f6design.com/jo...  I see a book on the table and the man tells me:

"This is our catalog; we can make any of these sculpted chocolate items per order, we have a factory in Long Island City"

    "Y O U  H A V E   A  C H O C O L A T E   F A C T O R Y ?"

"Yes" -he responds. "We are also purveyors to Japanese airlines JAL and ANA; and you will find our delicious truffles and chocolates if you travel first class"

    "O K,  G I M M E  B O N B O N S"

I was already sold. Already drooling to try the different types of bonbons, I dared snatch some pictures, although I didn't recall having brought my camera along with me. Then I proceeded to hand pick and select the following bonbons: white orange, dark kirsch and hazelnut milk, then I picked milk dark pecan caramels and a sugar free almond buttercrunch.

I am ready to leave as I feel something pulling me, prompting my exit. The man doesn't let me go until I had taken with me two delicious chocolate dipped strawberries.

"T H A N K  Y O U" -I say, then everything's a haze. I leap and bound like Superman; skyscrapers graze me slightly; I arrive at an unknown home and an unknown room. I head for a cabinet with huge and deep drawers, I open them; inside there lies an impressive collection of all types, shapes and forms of bonbons and chocolates, sorted by provenance and date: Paris, New York, Philadelphia, Zurich, etc and the names of various chocolatiers; I see an empty box with the name: "5th Ave. Chocolatiere - Fall 2007" and feel an incredible urge to put down the bonbons I had just purchased. I fight it. My pangs ferociously combat this inexplicable conflict within me; I want to eat these chocolates, I must. Suddenly, I find myself in my room, sweating and panting. Immediately my phone vibrates, and at the sight of who it is, I turn pale with horror as I realize what just transpired; it is Atif I.

"Hello Javier, I trust you are ok?" -Atif says with a slight tone of preoccupation.

    "I-I'm, I'm...what have you done??"

"Nothing that you haven't done before my friend; besides, I wanted you to taste the experience" -he says with a playful, mischievous voice.

"You summoned my....my....spirit???" -I ask in terror.

"Just like you did with me when you needed help with Jean Georges
http://www.yelp.com/bi...  I too needed you to scout this chocolate location for me.... but you took the truffles" - Atif says in a recriminatory voice.

I look at my side table and see the little box with the goodies, but I'm still beyond myself. "How could you use the Ouija on me? I could have died!"

"Relax, I knew you went drinking yesterday so I counted on you being sound asleep; your silver chord was secure" -he reassures me. I ask him:

"So what now? How many stars are you going to assign this place?"

"I haven't decided yet, as you know, there is a process..." -he starts explaining, but I reach to the box for a truffle and bite; it is delicious. By the time Atif finishes I have also finished the little box of sweets.

"Four stars" - I say. "I'll assign them four stars"

"You are too generous" -Atif says, but I know his hidden motivations; I remember the chocolate factory that 5th Ave. Chocolatiere has in Long Island City and smile. I only say one word:

    "Wonka?"

I don't need to know what he's doing, he's smiling wide just like in his picture; he says:

"You are one lovable and perceptive bastard"

Let's hope I am my friend, for sweets sake.

I second Brian E's comment, the best truffle in NY!!!! Their amazing dark chocolate truffles deserve 5 stars!! Although it is common for most truffles to be served in room temperature so that truffles turn soft, 5th Ave. Chocolatiere does it better by serving their truffles chilled, which really enhances the tasting experience! I absolutely loved how this chilled extra-smooth high-quality scrumptious dark chocolate truffle melts in my mouth....so addictively delicious and divine! Enjoy the initial sensation of chilled surface when it touches your tongue and then let the truffle sit on your tongue until it begins to melt quickly at body temperature. Let the creamy, delicious, and rich chocolate flavor fill your mouth with its delightful pleasure! Mmmmmmm!!!! Yum yum yum!!! I'm in love!! Seriously, how can anyone not like this chocolate??

I used to dismiss the Japanese tourists' obsession with 5th Ave. Chocolatiere as a mere hype and just another blind luxury brand worship. Sorry 5th Ave. Chocolatiere, I was wrong! This is the real deal! I highly recommend this for a gift to impress someone, HINT, HINT!!!!!

Cute shop (though NOT on 5th Ave...) but full of chocolates I can't imagine anyone would buy. Just walk right on past the weird chocolate molds and hit up the truffles. Seriously, one of the better truffles I've ever had. The biggest box actually comes in a fancy wooden book-shaped box, and if there's one thing I love more than books, it's truffles. And book-shaped things that mischievously open secret walls or hide things... like truffles.

Yeah, I bought the biggest box. What??

Yes, the name is misleading, but prior to their recent move they were a bit closer to 5th (on Madison, further uptown). Perhaps I will suggest "Orgasmic Trufflieres of 3rd Avenue" as an alternate name. Wonderfully frozen, crumbly followed by melty, followed by a party in your mouth. They come in a wooden box and look as if they have been hacked away from a secret truffle quarry with a pickaxe.

Prettier boxes of chocolate abound for those who want to express delicate emotions, but a large box of these babies suggests something  more athletic.

You will not see these on display, but ask the counter for a sample. They have them stashed out of reach in a secret freezer. Yes, they sell other stuff, but after tasting the truffle, are you really interested in the molded chocolate football? Is that gonna get you laid?

Bought their designer truffles online and was rather disappointed. The chocolate shell is too hard and not smooth enough. The filling was lust lacking. At this price range I have had much better chocolates elsewhere. The review for this place is pretty good so I guess I didn't order what they are good at? Maybe the cocoa covered truffle is a better idea.

I've been here a few times now.  The best and maybe the only thing to get here is the chocolate truffle that they let you sample right when you walk in the door. The truffle literally melts in your mouth!  I've given this as gifts to others have agreed that it's the best pure chocolate truffle they've had.

Also, they are fairly priced.  For a box of 8 decent size truffles, it's $15.  They make great gifts for chocolate lovers!

Sampled the infamous truffle-- pretty good, but not a huge fan. Instead, I got a selection (thank you, groupon) of various truffles/smores/choc covered pretzels instead. Much better! The cashier was also very patient with me as I selected about 25 random truffles... even offering me to open up a sealed package to sample a ChewyCherryBean when I was having my doubts. Pretty decent prices even without a Groupon, recommended if you're in the area... their Smores  and Chocolate Covered Oreas are FANTASTIC!

    b. People love receiving chocolate molded into calculators, hardware kits, and pigs
    c. The sculptured chocolate is "almost too amazing to eat"
    d. Woody Allen used a gun made of chocolate in his movie "Take the money and run"
    e. Fifth Avenue Chocolatiere is able to produce over 6,000 chocolate figures

Only one of the above statements is, likely, true.

This shop is proof that you do not need to choose between your passions. You can live the dream and be both a chocolatier AND a sculptor.

P.s.: Just keep praying that people want to buy that $35 Camcorder or Rotary Telephone you feature on your website.

Love one thing in this store - the 100% real truffle dark chocolates. I'm a true die hard for it! They are foods of the gods. If you need evidence that chocolates can make you horny or sex addict, you might want to try it for yourself. They are my favorites and yes, they can be addicted (to love). Even though I'm chocolate medically prohibited, I don't care. I don't care either that these chocolates are quite expensive for occasional indulgent. The store features chocolates in different forms. Those things make the stores seem to look like they sell other merchandise than chocolates, or your novelty items. You will be tempted to buy chocolates because you may have a thing with shoes. Hey, where can you get and eat your shoes? If you like to eat a thing that is edible, head here where you can finally make your dreams come true. Eat your short, man!

Wish I'd had more time to explore and can't wait to go back: Although I consider8 myself to be one of the enlightened :-D  I can admit when I'm wrong...

There IS a great way to balance the richer deeper darker chocolate without any of the drawbacks of really DARK chocolate.  I tried their truffles and they were the perfect balance of what we come to expect from European Darker Chocolate.  Also, they far surpassed any similar chocolates that I've had in a long time whether in NYC or beyond.

You would be doing yourself a favor to stop by and to purchase a few of your favorites just to know which you must have while you try a variety of their well-made chocolate.  Whether for yourself or as presents for friends and/or family, you will be glad you stopped by...

I love the truffles that this chocolatiere offers. I first heard about it in Japan when 5th Avenue Chocolatiere opened up a boutique in one of Tokyo's major department stores. Probably the best truffles I've had anywhere.

just ok chocolates. we got a groupon....so $40 worht a chocolate at this place is alot of chocolate, but nothing was great. i would prefer to pay full price and get super high end chocolates, like nuehaus or la maisan du chocolates. we gave them all away. not fresh belgium chocolates. made locally, but just not great, just ok. sales guy in the store had absolutely no personality.
