The 57th Street Antique Row is a lovely clustering of antiques shops.  Like any antique shop, it's hit or miss, but definitely worth a visit.  Over the years, I've walked away with vintage jewelry and handbags, furniture (barristers' bookcases, filing cabinets, desks, chairs), and other knick-knacks for reasonable prices.

This review is just about the "57th Street Antique Mall", and not the other very nice shops and smaller mall (Picket Fences) in the same complex.
We're over 50, and have not noticed being followed around, but then, are pretty focused when we're shopping.  I like that there is someone generally close by to open a case, and don't feel stalked.  I think they have a nice variety, and other than a couple of junky spaces, and newer items creeping in a couple of spaces, the selection is mostly quality, interesting, and fairly priced.  Kuddos to the dealers who rent spaces there.  "So", you ask, "why only one star?"  The low rating is based soley on the people who are behind the counter time after time, who I believe are the owners, or managers.  They are downright unfriendly, and RUDE.  We've been there several times, so it's not just someone having a bad day.  We are from out of the area.  Last year we broke a few speed limits to hit town in time to shop the mall.  We got there 10 minutes before the posted closing time, and they locked the door.  We knew what we were looking for, and would have only needed 5 of those 10 minutes.  We skipped going back for some time.  We tried again this past weekend.  Same unfriendly woman, and a new unfriendly guy. 3 of 4 of us made purchases (they did have a good sale going on).  They not only make you feel like an intuder inside the building, but police the outside to make sure no one is smoking.  I mean away from the door, or any windows, on a closed side of their building.  You'd think we were urinating there when she came and chased us off.  A while later, we saw her come out to make sure we were gone, and we were.  We were spending money across the parking lot.  Maybe their lack of people skills is what makes the other shops next to them such a pleasure to shop in, and this review in no way reflects on the professionalism, and friendly atmosphere of the other shops

I had a very, very bad experience with the staff here. I bought a large antique stereo for $107 dollars on the agreement with the vendor that he would help me deliver it into my apartment very close by (i would carry it in my van, and he would follow and help me get it inside, as I had no one to assist me.) He agreed to that arrangement. When I was checking out at front desk, rather than a positive 'thank you for doing business with us', the staff stressed that they would charge me a $20 'penalty' believe it or not, if i didn't remove the item within 48 hours...very rude and unnecessary.(They have an odd rather negative underlying vibe that is hard to describe...one example is an odd sign they have put up in the shop with a monkey's face that reads: "STOP MONKEYING AROUND AND BUY SOMETHING". Although trying to couch it in a bit of a 'cute' way, this sign is more than a subtle snipe at their customers.Anyway, after the sale when the vendor and I were supposed to meet the very next day, he could not be reached all day long. The store had my contact number, and they never called me. Toward end of day, still not able to find or contact the vendor who agreed to help me get the item to my place, I had reached my limit and asked for a refund under the circumstances. I told the manager/owner, i think her name is Chris, that i wasn't upset with her, just the way I had been blown off with no communication from the vendor under our arrangement. She became angry and  adamantly refused, referring to her 'no refund signs'. I tried to reason with her, explaining if she was in my shoes, and the same thing happened, she'd feel the same way. She continued to angrily refuse, telling me I was not taking into account "he may be in the hospital", LOL. It later turned out he claimed he "FORGOT"and was "AWAY FROM HIS CELL PHONE ALL DAY"...the only number he gave me. It wasn't until I called and told her my bank would help me with disputing the transaction, that she finally reluctantly agreed to the refund, but then to be vindictive, she told me never to come in the store again. There was absolutely no reason for her to behave in such a meanspirited fashion, especially when she was aware of dealer's agreement to help me if i purchased the item, which I made clear with her and another on her staff the day i bought it. That is not the way to do business or treat customers to say the least. How about this: "STOP MONKEYING AROUND AND BE KIND TO CUSTOMERS"

This place is so much fun just to go around with an old person and look at all the stuff that's crammed into this surprisingly huge mall. Most of the stores have really nice prices. Fun place to go to when you're really bored or have a lot of time.

The worst customer service!!!! There were 8 employees standing around and they told me nobody could help me load the dresser I was about to pay for into my truck. I'm 9 months pregnant and carrying a toddler, but God forbid somebody who works there has to do their job. I will NEVER go back to that place again.

I really enjoyed my first ever stroll through the stalls and shops at 57th St Antique Row. A great selection of vintage and antique goodies; heed the advice of other posts and go when you have time to stroll the whole thing. I didn't experience the stalker effect other writers mentioned. I was able to take my time and enjoy some fun chatchkes, beautiful antiques and some cool med-century knick knacks.

I have been to this antique mall a few times, always looking at the great items on display, but never taking the plunge. I finally purchased my first item this weekend, an antique dresser. It seemed a great deal at around $125. I called a friend, who came and helped haul it to my house.

I noticed when I got it home that there was black residue (something like soot) on the back and inside the dresser (areas that were not visible when I purchased the dresser). I tried my best to remove this residue, but to no avail. It kept coming off over and over again. I knew that if I put my clothes in the dresser, the residue would come off and ruin them.

I had the dealer's number, so I called her directly and asked for a return and refund. Unfortunately it is the policy of the antique mall not to take returns. However, the dealer sounded apologetic, and assured me that she would work out a return between the two of us. The next day she called and said she changed her mind and would not do a return after all, and that she no longer believed my claims about the mess inside the dresser.

I am annoyed with myself for not having checked the item more thoroughly (even though the damage was hidden), but also with the dealer for promising a return, then accusing me of lying about the damage and denying the return.

There are some really great finds from all different eras and some good deals to be found at this antique mall. Definitely worth checking out.

I am sure most of the dealers here are honest people, but please be careful with your purchases here, especially from the stall over in the corner along 57th St (the one with the mid-century and art deco furnishings).

Really what's not to love?!?! (well maybe the grouchy staff...but...they are not that bad!)

I really like looking at old, random, kitschy, weird, cool, colorful stuff. This place is jammed full of it! There is almost nothing that I find more fun than roaming the aisles at an antique mall.

There are two sides to this place. One side is crammed full and slightly claustrophobic. The other is more spread out and has wonderful nooks and crannies to explore. I like both sides!

I have found great presents here as well as fun things for myself. The best part about this place is the fairly reasonable prices. Of course there are always wildly over priced items, but generally I find the prices here very reasonable.

The other best part is that it is in the same parking lot as Evan's Kitchen - so you can eat some eggs Benedict and then go look for treasures on a full stomach!!!

Generally I don't dig places like this because they are full of old "junk," but there were some cool odds and ends hiding in this place.

I came by Evan's Kitchen for breakfast and decided to check out the shops in and around the Antique Mall in hopes of finding maybe just one beat up old record that might be worth a damn.  Oh man was I in shock when I came in here and saw the collection of gems this place housed.  Not only was the corner where the records were found organized quite neatly, but the collection here was nearly pristine, and every other record was something I wanted, needed, or had been looking for previously.  The Kinks "Lola Versus Powerman and the Moneygoround" in IMMACULATE shape?  Yes please!  Blue Cheer's "Vincebus Eruptum," super clean?? Don't mind if I do!  Curtis Mayfield's "Sweet Exorcist" in tip top shape?  Obviously!  Those are just the ones I purchased!  Let's forget about all the goodies I had to put back for fear of breaking the bank!

The records are priced anywhere between 5 and 25 bucks, most generally going for about 15, and everything seems to be discounted at 20% off on top of that.  For some hardcore crate diggers, this might seem steep for thrift store/antique standards, but I'll argue that given the well-kept condition of this collection, these records are well worth the prices that mark their plastic sleeves.  Unlike Brooksie's place in Old Sac, you're paying maybe five bucks less (give or take a few bucks) for everything, and I'd argue even further that this collection is in much better shape.

After payday, I will definitely be back here for more vinyl gold!!

I came here on Black Friday after eating at my favorite breakfast spot, Evan's Kitchen, which is located in the same complex. Strolling through here is a very pleasant way to spend some time on a day off. They have all kinds of neat crap, from extremely old cast iron cookware to boomerangs. I really liked all the old beverage containers that were still FULL! The staff look like they really hate young people, but that makes me like them more, I just avoid talking to them haha.

Yup, all the reviews talking about you being stalked are true. However, I'm going with the idea that they're just being overly helpful, and want your hands free to pick up more stuff.

I bought a great retro chair this weekend for under fifty bucks. I usually find something in one of the shops to take home. Make sure you cruise the entire place before purchasing, and ask one of the stalkers if they have any sales going on (sometimes they're not posted)

Make sure you stop in Evan's kitchen...the coffee is amazing :)

Like any antique market, this is hit or miss.  I came looking for a desk and found absolutely nothing.  This is definitely not the place for furniture, particularly large pieces, but for odds and ends, it's worth a quick peek.

Yes, it's large and can be somewhat overwhelming, but there is a great variety of stuff in this antique mall. Clearly they are renting out space to many different sellers, because the choices varied from area to area, but it was fun to explore. Many of the toys reminded me of my childhood, although I don't really think that items from the 1970s are old enough to be considered antique, maybe kitsch, but not antique (I'm not that old!)

I didn't find anything to buy today, but I enjoyed wandering and will probably return.

Loved it!  Scored an AWESOME mid century credenza in all teak for $140.00.  Pristine condition....they also had some more Danish beauties-I need a bigger SUV to get those babies back to LA.

I'd definitely take the time to check this place out, the prices are phenomenal and the items are kitschy cool.

Come here when you have time to spare! I wanted to stop by to take a peek at what they were selling and ended up staying for over an hour. The size of the mall seems a bit overwhelming, but the building is set up in nice sections.

At first I walked in and thought, "wow, look at all this cool Fiestaware and Pyrex" but after the 10th vendor I was pretty over it. Everyone seemed to have overpriced vintage dishware, so if that is your thing ... come here, but make sure you walk around before you buy because some vendors are cheaper.

I, however, was looking for mid-century furniture and scored a beautiful side table. The price was $58 with 30% off. What a deal! It is a great condition and looks great in my living room.

I'm not an antique collector so I actually prefer the "junky" antique stores over the high end ones.  I'm usually there because I'm being drug along by someone else. Or I'm looking for something attached to a costume party or a dare.

I do enjoy the toy section where "oh my gosh I had one of those" comes up more than once.  An A-team lunch box, speak and spell, sit n spin and the little wooden, wheeled, bumble bee with pull string put a huge smile on my face.

There's pretty much everything here. Books, toys, records, furniture, depression era glass, jewelry, on and on.  Really just way too much to list.

As far as clothing, shoes & hats by era goes, this place had the best collection I've ever come across.

The only thing I couldn't leave behind was a cute little blue tiki mug (very much not an antique) but I had a great stroll down memory lane while I was there.

IF REPRESENTATIVES OF 57TH STREET ANTIQUE MALL ARE READING THIS:
QUIT FOLLOWING YOUR CUSTOMERS AROUND. Offering assistance is reasonable, following customers and not giving them space is unprofessional and not business savvy. If you want to make sure people don't steal things, install security cameras because choosing to have employees act as "loss prevention" is resulting in a loss of business.
Watch me all you want on a security camera, but you've lost my business with the unprofessional, insulting and demeaning manner your employees/volunteers choose to use in their interactions. I have enjoyed your business for a couple years while trying to ignore your employees but cannot any further.

    FOR FUTURE CUSTOMERS:
If you're over 50 then this is the place for you. If you're under 50, get ready to be followed like you're a kleptomaniac.

Their sales are frequent enough, and some of their vendors offer great deals. They have the occasional rented space that contains what looks to be the contents of someone's unsold garage sale merchandise. And you'll find a lot of items to be overpriced.

For the variety, I'd give it four stars. However, they follow me (mid 20's) around like I'm trying to steal everything.

The last time I went there, it was 20 minutes to close and I knew what I was looking for. I entered, they looked at me oddly, and asked if there was anything they could help me with. I said no and there were two vendors I specifically wanted to see.
Ten minutes later while I was trying to decide between two items and very aware I needed to decide quickly, a woman came to me loudly. "THERE YOU ARE! They said you'd come back here and I just couldn't find you." What was the point of this? So she could stand there and stare at me for three minutes. I tried to wait her out awkwardly and ignore her. So she spoke up, "You know we don't want to rush you, you never want to be rushed...." and then she had no point but continued to stare at me.

I don't appreciate being stared at from three feet away while I'm deciding what I'd like to give you my money for.
I don't appreciate being followed and watched very blatantly while I peruse your business.
I don't appreciate that being followed and watched was a recurring theme over numerous visits.
Just because I'm not as old and retired as you doesn't mean I'm trying to steal your shit.
And for this reason, I have no intention to return.

I got a pretty bad headache/anxiety attack after about 30 minutes in here. There's just SO much to look at. Which is great, but very very overwhelming. Since I'm always on GO! mode places like that take a little practice for me to get used to.

So I walked around the entire place, the prices are reasonable and then there are items that I do not understand why they are so expensive!

I did find a vintage automatic jigger from 1950. It's my new favorite bar item now. Makes serving alcohol a lot easier than using a regular jigger.

I'll come back here once I have time and I've taken a couple advils before.

If you would like a moment of going back in time, come here...
The prices may not be what you expect, the service may be a bit inconsistent, but this is a community of Antique lovers...  This is something they love to do, not have to do for Medical benefits!
I found the whole experience charming and fun...  The other strip mall stores are neat to check out too.
Where can you go and see vintage Ray Bans that are now back in style?   Chanels from the 80's....Louis Vitton, Gucci, Spode & Tupperware!
    I Love that stuff!!!
If you think about it, it's like going to a museum for free.....  But you can buy the stuff!!!  If anything take a walk back in time and remember your childhood for a moment........

Well, to all you haters, I'm over 50 and I get "followed around" at this place,. so I will take it as compliment. They must think I'm a young thugster antique klepto or something.  LOL!    Seriously, it's true. It can  be annoying and a little creepy and I'm wondering if they get some sort of commission for selling stuff from other people's sections.  I don't know, I ignore and just shop away as I've found some fantastic stuff here.

    A great selection!

This place is an eclectic mix of vintage clothing, furniture, hats, jewelry, and nick-knacks. I inevitably always find something to purchase and I think the prices are very fair.

Today they even had big sales for Valentine's Day! Everything was at least 20% off, depending on the booth's seller.

I have been going here since I was a teen and my dad would lure my sister and I out of the house with the promise of a midtown lunch and then sneak into this parking lot before we could get out iPod ear buds out of our ears to protest. I had always noticed that when we went as teenagers, there would seriously be an employee following us through the entire store. No joke. I figured it was since we were "damn teenagers" and they wanted to make sure we didn't jack their high priced Pyrex, but I recently went again after not going for a few years and found that it is still the exact same! An older lady literally followed me through the store and would stand outside of the little booths and watch me. She did seem to back off about half way through but still, it was highly annoying. I didn't end up buying anything but I won't say it was due to creepy lady employee, but I do feel like I was busier making sure I wasn't annoying her then really looking through every display case like I normally do. Still an awesome store, but maybe install some security cameras so you can sit behind the counter and stalk me instead of being my shadow.

This mall has quite a few neat items, but just beware that there will be eyes on you during your whole expirience.  The dealers stare at you from all corners and it is very uncomfortable.  I went there with my twin sister and my mother and after exchanging stories afterwards we soon realized it's an age thing.  My mother (mid 50s) didn't get bothered as much, but my sister and I (mid 30s) were watched like hawks!  Kind of scary actually!?!  We all were a little turned off by this expirience.  Many more malls in our area that don't treat us this way!

Wow!  I'm a converted man.  There are many different styles to decor.  There are those modernist influenced styles.  The gilded era influenced styles.  The Victorian.  Coming to this Mall has transformed me into an appreciator of the furnishings and plateware and utensils from eras of the 40s to the 70s.  I'm not going to be wearing a leisure suit any time soon but I'm not making any promises.

Good selection of random vintage and antique items.
I will echo what some of the others have said, in that some of the employee's will follow you around as though you might snatch something without paying. Not sure what that's all about. Have they had theft problems?
Either way, it's worth checking out, especially if you're looking for a specific item and have some time to really look at each booth.

I am a true junker at heart. I love looking through somebody's old stuff to see if I can find a treasure.  This "antique" mall is more junk than treasure, but still worth the effort if you are looking for something.  There are two true antique stores, with french and swedish antiques and a mission-americana antique place, other than that, its a junker's delight.

THIS WAS THE WORST SHOPPING EXPERIENCE EVER!!!! PREPARE TO BE FOLLOWED LIKE A COMMON THIEF!

My husband, my father-in law, and I saw an add for a set of wrought iron patio furniture for under $200, so we decided to take a look. The patio set was already sold, so we decided to take a look around.

My husband and I are about 30, and my father-in-law is just under 60. We were dressed in nice casual clothes (it was a Sunday morning) and arrived in a nice car. The point I'm trying to make is that I do not believe we look particularly suspicious.

We were very blatantly followed from room to room like criminals by a middle-aged terribly dressed gentlemen who obviously has not changed his look since the 1970s. Apparently, he's in "loss prevention". What he didn't know was that he was following two attorneys and a retired peace officer. This guy was literally breathing down our necks, and he was not subtle about it at all.  When my husband confronted him about this, he denied that he was following us. Please. We're not idiots.

Normally I wouldn't elaborate any further on the quality of a business's products based off of one experience, but I am so offended by this experience, that I'm willing to give you the real deal.

NEARLY EVERY ITEM IN THIS PLACE IS JUNK.  You could buy it (for much less) at a garage sale. I think I saw some "collectible" toys that I got out of happy meal twenty years ago. We saw a knife that my husband purchased the exact same one (same brand) for $5 dollars fifteen years ago, and they were asking $38 dollars for it.

The ONLY item that looked like it was not PURE CRAP was the patio set that was already sold. And now I'm glad that it was already sold, because I could not live with myself knowing that I had contributed A SINGLE DOLLAR to this place staying in business, let along $150.

It looks like a hoarder's closet exploded in this place.  I will never EVER go back to this place. And if this is what all "antique" shops are like, I will never set foot in one again.

A friend of mine referred me to this place, to see if they could help me find the value of a rare book I have.  I didn't get half way through the conversation of explaining that I wanted to know an approximate value, when the phone disconnected.  I then called back two times in a row and it went straight to voicemail.  I tried one half hour later,, and it still went to voicemail. I then tried calling from another number, and they picked up.  When I said I was calling back, and needed some help, they said I went straight to voicemail because they were busy; I explained that I was talking to someone and got disconnected, they said that wasn't true there were only two people working the desk, and that I hadn't called their number.   I had in fact talked to someone, who stated the name of the shop when they picked up.  I like honesty, and a simple "i'm sorry and how can I help you".  I love to shop for antiques, but won't be shopping at this location.

If you like being watched, spied on and followed, this is your place! My hubby and I went in there yesterday and we were so uncomfortable he wanted to leave. There was some old person watching you around every turn. Not kidding! Very rude!

Not a bad place to spend a couple of hours.  I try to visit this store every six months or so, and I always manage to find something interesting.  The layout is convoluted - it's much bigger than it looks upon entering.  Turn right and you'll find a confusing maze of little rooms past the main aisles.  Go past the front counter, turn left and you'll find yourself in a large room full of booths.  Most dealers have stashes of small items and ephemera, even if their main focus is furniture or large antiques.  It's a bit difficult to find help if you want to see something in a locked case, though.  I spent a good bit of time in one area and nobody came by to see if I needed help.  Later I heard a customer ask three times for assistance before one of the employees heard her.   Also, they use calculators and handwritten receipts here, which is one of my gripes about many antique stores.  I've seen clerks struggle to get the math right and I always add up my purchases to verify the total before I leave.  Beyond those minor issues, the 57th Street Antique Mall is definitely worth a visit.
