My family and I have been going here for as long as i can remember!!! this place is authentic and as good as it gets!!!
The chips are always good, i dont eat salsa, but my boyfriend LOVES salsa and loves the salsa from here! I love the dressing they put on the little salad you get with your dinner. i order a side of that and use it for my chips! the soup they give your before your dinner plate arrives is absolutely amazing!!! My personal favorite is the chicken tacos, and shredded beef quesadillas, and the Carnitas burritos. The chicken tacos are the only chicken tacos I eat!! The shredded beef quesadillas are juicy, and VERY tasty. My family gets the ground beef tacos, which are their favorite, the Chile rellenos which my mom and dad LOVE, they are fresh and tasty! and my mom LOVES the cheese enchiladas and their sauce is VERY good, she always orders an extra side of it to pour over her rice and beans! I love that they use the real Mexican cheese on their beans! you would think its a normal thing for Mexican restaurants to use MEXICAN cheese, but this is one of the only Mexican restaurants
that I've been to that uses it, and it is so good!
We were kind of Leary of going to the new building, thinking they were going to be changed, but to our surprise it was as good as ever!!! =] the new place is awesome! very clean, good atmosphere, waitresses are ALWAYS nice.
I like that you can tell them you want say 2 chicken tacos and a shredded beef quesadilla, as a dinner plate and thats no problem. most places wont make exceptions. but they have no problem doing so!!!
overall, this place is the best ive been to! -

I have been coming here since I was a kid. I now live in SF and constantly crave their salsa, tacos and enchiladas. The service is great and the food, so yummy. The free soup is amazing too, you can tell they make it fresh in the restaurant. So good on a cold day.
I have to head here, at least once, every time I am home. -

Solid 3 to 3 1/2. With so many Mexican restaurants in Sacramento you have to do pretty good to be in the top. We used a Groupon to stop in for dinner. I'm amazed that at a good many of restaurants now you have to "spice" up your own dish. I don't know if restaurants are erring on the cautious side these days or not but again we had to fix up our dishes. Unfortunately, when you have to ad the Tapatio you also change the flavor. I love Tapatio but it is a flavor changer. My wife had Sopes Tapati. Not exactly what she expected but after a dose of Tapatio and some salt it was pleasing. I ordered the Camarones A La Diabla. Plenty of succulent shrimp in a really nice sauce. I'd order them again. The rice and beans seemed normal fare. All in all, yes just OK. I might try the Northgate one as others have said that they liked it better. We'll see. Service was great. We were the only ones there. A sit anywhere you'd like situation.

You could see 524 from the 80E freeway. Northgate. Circa IHOP.
It's a large space with booths and tables. Clean. Friendly.
Complimentary chips and two salsas-- a red chipotle-y salsa and a pico de gallo with more peppers than tomato.
They serve breakfast, lunch, and dinner. And yes, breakfast is available all day! -
Review from Marie N.
I attended a holiday dinner party here last night with about 15 people, and had a good time. The service was great.
The food however, is just ok. I've gotten much tastier Mexican food at taquerías to be honest. Meat is moist but not real flavorful. Beans and rice are kind of bland, although the thick slab of melted cheese on top was tasty. Chips and salsa are just standard. My chicken enchilada with Chile Verde sauce was actually pretty good, my shredded beef taco and carnita quesadilla were ok.
Like I said though, the service here was really great, and they even brought out three dishes of free dessert (crispy tortilla w/cinnamon, sugar, and drizzles of chocolate and I think caramel?) to thank us for having our holiday party there.
We each paid the same price for 3-item plates from a set menu and it was reasonable. I would come back here again if invited to another party, but probably not for dinner with just my bf if I was craving good Mexican. -

**Update**
Make sure you read the FILTERED reviews for this 524! Plenty of 1 star ratings Yelp decided to filter out!
I was invited to lunch the other day at the Northgate location by my best guy friend !!HIS TREAT! Free meal! LOL woo hoo!! When friends treat, it all tastes YUMMY! RIght? WRONG.
I've heard for over a year how great this place is from my friend who said it's one of the best Mexican restaurants in town. So of course you believe your best friend right? WRONG. Way wrong.
The complimentary soup was blah...it .tasted like minestrone soup from the can. Progresso brand to be exact.
The chips were great! Like right out of the bag! (total sarcasm)
But the salsa? I had two bites and was done. It was like someone chopped up a dry tomato,a jalapeno, and an onion and threw it in a cup. Very dry. Now mind you I love a good salsa, but there has to be some sort of moisture/juiciness to it. I don't know. Maybe I'm weird.
I ordered the chicken enchilada deluxe. Another blah. I was highly disappointed! The chicken inside the enchilada tasted like it was BOILED in plain tap water.YUCK! No flavor to the red sauce either. It's Mexican food, so I expect SOME sort of zing or zest!
The refried beans that came with the meal were meh. The rice, another disappointment also.
I give one star for the waitress being so friendly, perfect timing on refilling our drinks. The other star is for the place being so contemporary and clean. The bar looks cute, but a tad out of place.
I honestly came here KNOWING I was going to have a great Mexican meal. Turns out I would have been better off going to Jimboy's and paying for my own lunch. Or even IHOP right across the parking lot.
Just because a meal is free, does not make it taste better. *sigh* Sorry 524, even if a friend offers to buy my lunch at your establishment, you won't find me coming back again. -

They are back in business at the new location. While parking yourself next to the IHOP and a bunch of fast-food joints off the I-80 freeway may not indicate the best in food choices, 524 produces good Mexican food and good prices.
They've gone from a whole-in-the-wall on the south end of Northgate to their new location. It's a bit too big and airy, but who cares.
Good food. Quick service. Nice people. Excellent prices.

This is my fave place to go after a long night of drinking!!! The soup that comes with every entree is medicine to my hangover. They always bring me a plate of lemon to squeeze on my dish cause thats the way I roll, and they remember.
My b/f loves the steak loco, it is like steak fahitas served with chorizo!! Really good.
Dora the owner is awesome and always takes care of us. So happy that she has a new location.
Only drawbacks, they only serve beer and wine, (would love to have a REAL margi), they do have a wine margs though.
They also have this really not nice waitress there, we come all the time and she seems to never get nicer but I know she knows we totally support the place.
Other than that Im headed there next Sunday, paired with thier soup, an Ibprophen and a cold modelo especial, I can get through anything :) -

Great service, friendly staff, mediocre food. I tried twice because of the good reviews. Chile verde was gristly and stringy the first time and the albondigas soup tasted like it started out as Campbell's - not a compliment in my book. The refritos and chips are good though.

Barely Mexican food, no originality and very bland taste. Hey, its edible to say the least but I won't eat here again. Did I mention its a cop magnet? Ya, they were all over.

By far my favorite Mexican restaurant in Sacramento. The salsa is spicy and delicious and the soup is excellent. I'm usually too full to eat my entire dinner, which is okay because then I can take some home for lunch the next day. The staff and owners are some of the nicest people you'll meet. We always have a great experience.

Can't beat good, cheap Mexican food. My favorites are the menudo and the combination plate with an enchilada and a chorizo burrito. 524 also makes a very good chili colorado. Even though it's much older, I prefer this location than the original 524 (#1).

Went to 524 to check out the new and improved location on Northgate next to I-Hop. The food was good like before. I kept it simple and just had some enchiladas and a taco. The shredded beef is very good and flavorful. The location is a lot more spacious than they had before. Soup was served with the meal and that as well was good. I like the salsa that they serve with the chips. As of now just serving beer and wine, but I'm sure that will change sooner or later to a full bar for margaritas.

I've been coming to 524 since I was a wee little one at the west el Camino and northgate location. It took me a while to be able to order my own food, since my mom always ordered it for me....anywho to this day I still get the beef burrito. So simple and yet so much flavor. And their soup is just perfect.

$9 enchiladas combo plate, very small portion, not worth $9. Beans were good, rice was bland. Chicken enchiladas was very bland, no seasonings whatsoever, not even salt, it was just boiled and shredded. Chips were stale. Salas not fresh. Hot sauce was good. $7 Chicken Burrito was huge, but very dry and flavorless. Again, just plain shredded chicken with no flavor.
Very nice restaurant, too bad the food doesn't match. -

Roseville, CA
The dining establishment is nice. Service is friendly and accommodating, however, the food is waaay over priced for what you get. Thank goodness for the endless chips that I could fill up on before and after my meal. Sheesh. I kid you not...when the burrito that I ordered for lunch came it looked identical to a flauta or slightly larger than a taquito. Immediately after the waitress sat my food plate down, I asked for more chips and salsa to counter my hunger which was going to linger. I will not be back until they learn what size a burrito needs to be. Food taste was good but the portions killed it for me.

Chicken taco plate...don't know the price. The chicken in the taco's tasted like it had been boiled in plain old water and then shredded and dumped into stale tortilla with a little lettuce and some kind of bland hot sauce. That's IT! The rice was dry and bland, the beans were about the best thing on my plate. I specifically asked over the phone if they put cheese on the tacos and they said yes, but when I got it there was no cheese and i'm pretty sure Del Taco beats them taste wise. Adding salt didn't help. Adding Salsa didnt help. That food is just wrong.
