This is an ACTUAL music store, and as such should be treated as a valuable commodity, because that's what it is.

I won't go into my entire views on the loss of community and social interaction that go along with supporting itunes, (mainly because I can't find my soapbox) but I think it's really important to keep a great store like 52.5 in business.  One because the merchandise they are selling is awesome and two, because it the staff is friendly and provide you, the customer, with the best record store in Charleston.

If you are visiting Charleston and want to go somewhere the "locals" would go to, 52.5 (and much of the Upper King Street District for that matter) is a good stop.

    Now selling beer.

Just when I thought they couldn't get any better, they start selling beer, and not just any beer, but good beer for which you had to travel beyond the Upper King district to get in the past.  I will be here much more often.

One caveat... their liquor license doesn't allow Sunday sales, so plan ahead.

Formerly of 52 1/2 Wentworth, 52.5 is THE locally owned alternative record store.

If you're looking for anything top 40, you'll probably be disappointed. But if you like spending hours looking through alternative cd's, vinyl, cult films, quirky magazines, and unorthodox reading material, you're in luck. You will be paying full price for those items, but let's face it, you're really buying a place to hang out (something you can't put in your Amazon shopping cart).

Compared to the previous cozy locations, the new space feels cavernous. But it improves with a crowd. Here's hoping they get a lot of use out of their small stage, and that the recent art opening was the first of many.

Probably the best record store for rare & obscure indie rock in the entire state of South Carolina. I can only think of ONE trip to Charleston ever where I didn't goto the 52.5.

Every low-country music snob's wet dream.

who but a genius would have thought of pairing beer with music?
Like, writing a review that says "goes great with motorhead".
    Genius!
    And books?  and art?
    and new and used CD's?
    awesome.
Well priced cd's too, where I wasn't thinking, I could get this on Itunes for 9.99.
besides, we needed some music for the drive back to Atlanta so got some discs.
Turns out our car had Sirius satellite and we found an indie station that played at least one song from each album we got at the store.

Charleston, SC is one of the best Southern towns.  Home to amazing seafood, beautiful architecture, and when you're looking for something a little more alternative, this excellent establishment.  Prices are very reasonable and the selection is deep.  Haven't been back since the introduction of beer (or since 2004, for that matter).  As far as quality record stores, it's the only game in town.

Best used scores: Blue Velvet soundtrack, Born Against - The Rebel Sound Of S--- And Failure (Vermiform), Cex - Starship Galactica (555 Recordings)

This is the best record store in Charleston! The owner Clay, really goes out of his way to keep some good stuff in stock. He will also go out of his way to track down old dusty pieces that you may be looking for.

This is a must for any real deal crate diggers. He's got a decent selection of funk and soul albums and if I have not snagged them already, a decent selection of soul 45's.

This place is the best find in town.  Great records, art, books, and beer.   A one stop shop for all.   Didn't find the Born Against but I am sure it is there somewhere.

I only wish that I'd an extra two hours to drift slowly through this place.

My bro-in-law and I seriously hoofed it from blocks away in order to get here and back to Hyman's Seafood for dinner with the family. We should have known better than to try for that in the space of forty minutes.

52.5 is an establishment that you want to give some time to. It's a legit record store, open and dark and warm and wood, allowing its music and ridiculously good selection of wonderful beers to breathe. You don't want to rush it. To think that I could have bought a cold Chimay single and wandered the aisles, sipping and savoring the contents of both. But, no. I was the idiot who visited this place for literally five minutes, breathlessly taking in Hot Water Music stickers, good Belgian strong ales, and the quiet helpfulness of the bearded dude wearing the AK Press shirt as he informed me that no, they didn't have the new Asylum Street Spankers album or the vinyl of Shearwater's newest in stock, but they could order it for me.  Sorry, mister, and thanks for being so willing, but I'm from Ohio.  Just keep playing Shearwater for me over the speakers, and more of that newer M83, so I can savor this place that makes me feel connected and normal in this town. If I was in Charleston more often, I'd probably bounce back and forth between here and City Lights in order to feel grounded.

Recommended, and, please, give yourself more time than you'll think you'll need. You won't regret it.

One of the best small independent record stores on the east coast and a must-stop for fans of indie music and revolutionary reading. What this place lacks in space they make up for with excellent stock and knowledgeable staff.  They feature a great selection of independent and occassionally hard-to-find CDs, DVDs, vinyl, books, and zines.  Plus a small but choice selection of used CDs and DVDs.  We look forward to stopping here on our summer trips to Chaz'ton and never leave without spending a fistful of money.

Honestly, it's too bad that 52.5 has to close. Yes, it's a music store, but they also have zines, movies, beer, and other random things that would make anyone want to spend a whole day there.
