Neighborhoods: Southwest, Capitol HillThe customer service is poor. I walked in and started looking, and only said hi to the guy behind the counter because his eyes were following me. If you're looking for 60s and 70s period pieces, like mod jackets or bell bottoms, this is the place to go. It also has a big collection of fur coats, but who knows if they're real. If you're a cowboy or girl looking for some used boots, or bandanas, this is the place to go.
3/25/08 update: Sad news!! Retro 510 is now closed as a storefront. However, I talked with the owner and he said they will soon have an eBay store if you are interested...
510 Retro is another of my favorite vintage stores. They have so many different eras of clothing here! Although it may seem a little expensive to some, I don't think it is for real vintage clothing.
The shop itself is teeny and full of men's and women's clothes, shoes, giant belt buckles, old school sunglasses, hats, roller skates, luggage, jewelry, knick-knacks, and more. It's a lot of stuff for such a small space, but it doesn't feel overcrowded somehow.
It's also a great place to find costumes if you are a person that likes theme parties as much as I do. Or if you just like to dress up in fun, funky stuff.

This is what I think of when I want that authentic vintage store feel. 510 retro is a tiny vintage clothing shop tucked away on "vintage row" packed to the brim with clothing, records, and other vintage hachi-bachi. You can tell that the employees buy to their tastes with plenty of the same style of clothing. This can be both a blessing and a curse depending on if your styles match theirs. The quality of the clothing is also great, with most of the truly vintage clothing is marked not only with the price, but the era it was made in. Prices are not too bad, especially for truly vintage clothing, but ARC this is not. Mens pants are a bit hard to find, but mens shirts are plentiful. Also, make sure to check out the back room for some additional deals.
My sister told me about 510 Retro earlier this week. "This place...across from the Snake Pit (ew) -- CHECK OUT THE BAG I GOT THERE!!!" It was a sweet bag, one of those old airline travel bags that looked like something from "The Life Aquatic."
I checked out the store the next day and was bowled over. The tiny shop is crammed with vintage clothing, bags, shoes and knick-knacks, most of it very reasonably priced. I mean, the stuff is practically falling off the walls, there's so much of it. I snapped up two hilarious vintage tees (about $13 each) in minutes.
The place is a gem, I tell ya. A gem! Let us pray that the fashion types stay down on Broadway, paying ridiculous sums for old clothes, while the rest of us vintage fans rummage blissfully through 510 Retro. (Dang -- I shouldn't have even written this review.)
